Welcome ‘‘

to the OCTOBER 2013 edition of Harworth & Bircotes Today as october arrives, i usually have to consider putting away my sandals and pulling on my winter boots. My problem this year, is that i threw away more than one pair of very old boots at the first signs of spring – my way of ensuring that i would definitely have new ones this year, but now that means i am going to have to make a rare shopping trip and a successful one at that, before ~ albert Camus i can wear boots this year, and i am beginning to regret that now! i have a feeling that my winter coat situation may be similar – i must learn not to be so ruthless during my spring clearouts! I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there are just 2 more magazines before Christmas now! So if you need to communicate details of Christmas events, or get your Christmas advertising campaign underway then now is the time to contact me. The November magazines will be delivered from 25th october and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 11th october.

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a fl ower.

KeL eLLioT iN CoNCerT Kel is

a singer songwriter with the unusual distinction of being a double bass player. Her songs are upbeat, lyrically optimistic and musically infectious. A sassy jazz singer, Kel’s performances are packed with humour, irony and a touch of mischief, with songs representing a modern approach to jazz and blues , drawing on influences as diverse at Ella Fitzgerald and Bonnie Rait. Her band comprises guitar, keyboard and percussion - I have seen this band and highly recommend it to you… they are brilliant. £8.50 adult £4 child.

Season now in full swing The football season is now finally in full swing for all of our teams and it’s one that all of the management from the Juniors through to the senior teams are looking forward to. It’s certainly been a busy time and the 1st team at the time of writing are 6 games in and 5th in the table, its been a bit inconsistent but this is to be expected with so many new faces and some not so new. The club are delighted that good local talent has returned in the shape of Ryan Pacskowski, Martyn Gee and Greg Archer, with Lewis Hilton also returning and young talent like Makenzie Tomlinson breaking through the village has not been so well represented in years and we are beginning to see an upturn in people coming through the gate which is great to see. With the improved facilities and good local young talent playing we are hoping word will spread and more will return, the strength of the squad will also improve the reserves and the 3rds so optimism is high but we must make sure the hard work is done out on the pitch because without hard work the talent and optomism is worthless. We are also delighted to announce new Shirt sponsors for the 1st team in Local firm Lifting Support services,

we are always trying to forge links with local businessses and was over the moon when approached by Mark Woodward and Steve Grainger (see pic below) We still have lots of work to do though and always on the lookout for other business to support us as we have 3 Saturday sides and 2 on a Sunday as well as 3 Junior sides that all need new equipment and kits etc. If you are a regular reader you will have seen that we work hard on fudraising but we cannot keep milking the same cow and we feel if we get the local businesses behind us as well as the general public we really will be a force to be reckoned with, if

Its great to have the Juniors start their respectice seasons as well, if any readers have kids interested in getting involved at under 12’s, 13’s and 16’ level then get in touch as the managers are always looking to get new players interested and we welcome allcomers. 1 fixture for you all to get in your diarys is Wednesday the 9th of October as the 1st team will be facing Frickley Athletic in the FA Sheffield County Senior, they are the cup holders and three leagues above so we need your support on what is sure to be a great night for the club. HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Improving dementia care in Doncaster – work with us We all know someone who has or will have some form of memory loss, whether this is diagnosed as being dementia or not. Our aim is to work with local people like you, to provide a better understanding of what it means to live with memory loss: whether this is you, a neighbour, friend or relative. In Doncaster we are developing peer support for people with dementia and their carers, accompanied by our dementia befriending scheme. The aim of both services is to help people achieve a good quality of life and give them the added confidence they need to remain independent in their own home. We are hoping to work with local shops, businesses, clubs, groups and networks, as well as healthcare professionals to increase the awareness of dementia and the role that everyone can play in helping to support our local community. Garden View

The Late Show Good planning and preparation can make this time of year a dramatic moment in the garden, but if you feel your outside space lacks autumn pizzazz, the work for next year’s spectacle begins right now. You still have time to plant late flowering herbaceous perennials and hardy grasses, both of which have beautiful flowers in bloom right now, but aim to do this at the beginning of the month. experiment with vivid red Helenium such as ‘rubinzwerg’ which look fantastic when planted in front of the biscuit coloured flower spikes of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, or try the much lower, but no less dramatic double pink flowers of Colchicum ‘Water lily’ towards the front of the border.

another species which offers colour and texture to match this diverse range of plants. As I sit in the autumn garden right now, perched on a cold metal bench, I can admire the wonderful tall arching stems of Stipa gigantea swaying in the gentle breeze. Standing proud since July, this majestic grass will carry on performing until the heavy snow flattens the delicate oat-like flower spikes.

If the subtlety of the grassy flowers are not enough to sustain your need for autumn colour, then try Aster ‘October Skies’ for a splash of late season lilac. The daisy like flowers are produced in abundance over a long period of time, and the great news is that it’s happy growing on dry poor soil in sun or even

part shade. It won’t get much bigger than 45cm tall so doesn’t need staking and the colours seem to intensify as the light levels fall. As we progress further into the month, the bright yellows, oranges and reds synonymous with October, slowly deepen before fading to a muddy brown. As the aroma of decay intensifies, I notice the evening light fades faster of late, as the autumn sun sets on another gardening day. Happy Gardening. T

TOP TIPS

Fun Things to do in October 

14 14

Make chutney from the left over autumn harvest such as pears, apples and carrots. Stewed and pickled fruit and vegetables make great personalised gifts for Christmas. Sow broad beans now if you have a light soil or raised beds, and you will have an earlier crop next year. Give them protection with fleece to keep out the worst of the weather

Move tender plants in to a heated greenhouse, or pot them on and bring indoors Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs including Alliums, Daffs, Crocus and Iris. Delay planting Tulips until next month. Collect seed from the garden and dry in paper bags. Sow them next spring and if you have too many give them away.

The bike was stolen from the secure garden overnight; on police advice the owner distributed around Harworth several flyers with a photograph of the bike, a contact number and an offer of a reward. Through community spirit and good will not only was the bike returned the very next day by a local resident, but also when the reward was offered it was refused by the person returning the bike (I would like to make the point that the person returning the bike is not responsible for its theft). To the person who returned the bike who wishes to remain anonymous, you know who you are - thank you for returning the bike to a very happy owner. The owner was overwhelmed with the support and assistance from residents of Harworth and Bircotes in retrieving his bike. T

Crime activity in the area into using force but these are getting fewer, there have also been a couple of reports of vehicle number plates being stolen.

There has been an increase in activity around vehicle crime over the past month and in particular Theft from Motor vehicles. Unfortunately the majority of these crimes have been committed on vehicles that have been left insecure. offenders are actively trying vehicle doors and boots to vehicles during the night and mostly only stealing from vehicles if they have been left insecure. Notts Police are advising residents to be extra vigilant when parking vehicles up to ensure they are secure and no valuables on display when left secure. There have been a few incidents where community vehicles have been broken

There has also been an increase in the number of Burglary Dwellings reported in the past month. In response Notts Police have run some operations in the area where plain clothes officers have been patrolling the area on foot and in plain cars during the evenings and through the night. These officers have been supported by extra uniformed police officers patrolling the area during the night. There have been some successes where 3 to 4 persons over a period of 2 nights were arrested for going equipped and burglary. A male has also been arrested for a

Tickhill Lions Club This year’s fundraising bonfire and fireworks extravaganza will be organised jointly with the Tickhill Cricket Club and held on saturday the 2nd November on the cricket field on alderson drive. The bonfire will be lit at 5-30pm with two superb firework shows to follow. The first display will start at 6-00pm with the second after a short interval at approximately 6-45pm. entrance is free but donations are encouraged, and as ever, all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community and around the world.

The Cricket Club bar will of course be open so bringing your own cans etc. will not be allowed.

Novelties and glowsticks will be available for the kids (big and small) and the Cricket Club will be organising a barbeque so don’t have too much tea.

This is a family friendly event and whilst noisy, the bangs will not be over the top. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and remember not to leave the field full of litter – use the bins please! Health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and we would ask everyone to endeavour to walk to the field as there will be no parking in the immediate vicinity.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - OCTOBER 2013 Fancy A Bike Ride? This Council has been approached about a possible cycling event next July. it is intended to have a Tommy simpson 100 mile cycle ride (not a race) for adults, starting and finishing in Harworth. The route will pass through Bassetlaw, Lincolnshire and south Yorkshire, and apparently was well known to Tommy. It would be organised by Cycling Weekly, a well known publishing company in the sporting world. This ‘Cyclosportive’ event will be held on Sunday 13th July 2014, the anniversary of his death. It will be open to the public, and will have some cycling celebrities in attendance. The role of this Council will be to provide basic facilities such as refreshments and toilets, plus parking will be needed for more than 1000 cars. Cyclists from all over Britain are expected to participate. This has to be good news for local businesses. I will keep you updated on progress.

The Local Environment: Doing Our Best for Flora and Fauna an expert from Nottinghamshire County Council recently visited our Town – we particularly wanted environmental advice for the newly-acquired pond - and he has sent an in-depth report to Council, and interesting reading it is, too. With regards to a wildlife-friendly pond, he advised that:-

• Ensure one third of the pond is left as open water, though some dense pond vegetation is needed for tadpoles and invertebrates • A good variety of plants around the pond attracts small animals and invertebrates; keep vegetation continuous to the bank-edge so that wildlife can enter the pond under cover • A couple of logs sloping into the water will encourage dragonflies, and act as a hiding place for amphibians and a home to many invertebrates. He also suggested that we should leave a pile of logs and rocks nearby as a nesting place for mammals and possibly grass snakes and slow worms, and have a couple of long grass ‘corridors’ for small creatures to leave the pond at breeding time and when they hibernate. Why go to all this trouble? Basically we want a wildlife-friendly area of significant interest that local schools can visit and learn about; for this reason Council has applied for a grant for a dipping platform, safety equipment and security fencing. Safety always has to come first, but we also want an attractive site for the benefit of the community; if there are any interested local people who would enjoy being involved, please let us know.

Award for Motoring Idiot of the Month

1. The driver of a Range Rover, illegally parked on the pavement, decided to reverse out and across the roundabout near the Health Centre. The vehicle moved dangerously close to a mother and her baby in a pushchair. Did he apologise? No; instead he shouted and swore at the lady concerned. 2. A car driver going at speed up Scrooby Road and negotiating the same roundabout suddenly turned left from this roundabout and onto the short access road for one of the shops - seen by many motorists as an extra parking spot. He had to brake suddenly, just stopping a few inches short of a pedestrian and an elderly lady on a mobility scooter who were on the pavement. The pedestrian, a woman, gave him a right telling off! 3. Or should the prize go to the callow youth driving his black car up Bawtry Road around 60 m.p.h. and overtaking everything else on the road? God help any child or person crossing the road, they wouldn’t have stood a chance. Perhaps it is too close to call – not only are all three selfish but stupid as well. Notts. community community shop front areas, especially as double yellow lines mean nothing to some drivers, even though there is a free car park opposite. The appearance of a traffic warden has a temporary effect, but the moron factor soon reappears. Pedestrians should be able to use the pavement in safety. Think about it are you guilty of pavement parking?

Village Ventures This rural and Community Touring Programme has released new dates of live performances across Nottinghamshire. Look out for Kel Elliott, Harworth Town Hall on Sat. 12th October, 7.30pm. Kel is a feisty singer of the blues and jazz, and I am told that she and her band deliver a very lively, humorous performance. Tickets cost £8 adults, £4 for children aged 12 or over, and are available from the Town Hall and Community Information Centre. On 12th December you can see a wonderful performance by the popular Proteus Company of Alice in Wonderland; this is suitable for children from 8 years old, and will be a real treat for all the family.

Tell Me What You Think Last month a session of dog micro chipping was held in Worksop. it was free, available to anyone with a dog, regardless of income. it was so successful that consideration is being given to another session. What if i persuaded the authorities to hold a session in Harworth – would people come? Tell me what you think about this idea, and remember, dog micro chipping will become compulsory in 2016.

Cleaning the Car Park one saturday last month saw our staff and Town Clerk sweeping and washing down the car park. They started at 8am before too many cars arrived, and collected piles of cigarette ends, sweet

wrappers and even scratch cards. This really shouldn’t be necessary, but some people are too lazy to walk to a bin to deposit their rubbish, which of course they don’t intend having in their vehicle. I think Nottingham City has the right idea – individuals who were caught throwing a cigarette butt on the floor have been fined £650!

My Role as a Town Councillor representing you, the people of Harworth and Bircotes, is the main principle on which i and Town Council members operate. You may not be aware that your Council has something of a reputation across Nottinghamshire as a co-operative, forward thinking and can-do Council; this is possibly why we are the lead Council in the Lengthsman scheme. our success, i believe, is because we promote working in partnership with others, be it County or district Councils, and also with other organisations. Why do we do this? Because we are here to serve you and get the best possible deals we can. Yes, it is frustrating trying to get others to address problems we are not allowed to deal with, and yes, it can take months or even years to get a result – but we keep on trying, and always in a professional manner. Another reason for our success is that we do not take a political stance at Town Council level; I have no idea which party my colleagues support, apart from the other two Ward Councillors. This Council now gets compliments, visitors and residents have noticed the improvements in the appearance of the Town and the facilities available, but there is still a lot to do:

Currently in the Pipeline • The Police Move into the Community Information Office: we have now received a timetable from Police H.Q. for the build of the extension

Delivered FREE to over 3600 homes | www.todaypublications.co.uk

and creation of a designated parking area; hopefully this should be finished by August 2014. • Housing: last month saw the press release from Jones Homes and Harworth Estates about the proposed build of 118 new houses on Scrooby Road. Persimmon have now got planning permission to build at the top of Bawtry Road, as does the developer for Hawkins Close. Airey Houses: B.D.C. have consulted with us about this major rebuilding project. • A New Supermarket: everyone is asking when will it appear; the answer is I don’t know, but I do believe building will start after Easter 2014. • Community Assets: the development and hopefully acceptance of a Neighbourhood Plan allows Council to acquire/develop land/ buildings so that they become an asset to the community. Apart from the pond, we are negotiating with B.D.C. to purchase (at a token cost) Snipe Park Wood, and Notts. County has visited and are looking at small pockets of land to transfer to us; we are chasing District about developing one area of land off Common Lane for use as a play area. We have considered improving the building on the Tommy Simpson Field for the benefit of the community, but could find no interest from any groups wishing to use it.

To Make You Smile in my early nursing career i trained as a midwife, later i worked in the community as a health visitor, and it was during this latter period that i bought a female kitten from a patient whose longhaired Persian cat had produced a small litter. one day i had to leave my kitten, called Charlotte, with my grandmother – my grandparents were used to cats as before moving to Harworth they had a poultry

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY 25 25

community farm in the country, and cats were a useful deterrent to vermin. When I called at my grandparents house that evening to collect my hairy feline my grandmother asked “what do you call this cat? You need to change its name – it’s a tom cat!” I was horrified, I couldn’t believe I had been sold a kitten of the wrong sex, and the final insult from grandma was “call yourself a midwife!” This was indeed a salutary lesson: it taught me that all the qualifications in the world can’t beat practical knowledge and experience. I also learned not to take anything at face value – always check it out.
