Is it possible that spring is finally here? After an unseasonably wintery March, surely, we are now due some spring like days! Around us buds do seem to bursting from the trees and I know that my garden is full of snowdrops, crocus and daffodils, so I hope that winter is behind us.

Creating a more spacious feel to your home Whether you live in a cottage, a flat, a terrace or a detached property one of the biggest conundrums homeowners face is how to create a more spacious feel within a home. There are obvious choices such as using neutral tones, bringing in lots of natural light and savvy storage solutions which are all great but it’s how you utilise and make all these elements work together to make a small space look and appear more spacious. So here are my easy ways you can achieve a spacious feel to your home. Decorating When decorating a top interior trick is to include painting your skirting boards and door frames in a lighter shade than your walls. This will help to capitalise on the spacious and open feel you are trying to create as the woodwork will blend in with your chosen colour. Flooring Having multiple types of flooring such as carpet, laminate wood or tiled flooring within the different rooms of your home can make rooms appear smaller. Having one type of flooring throughout your home (or as many rooms as possible) allows for a more fluid flow as you move from one room to the next making rooms feel as if they are part of one large space. Flooring choices There are a couple of ways that you can give an illusion of having more space from the type of flooring your select. If you are choosing a wood floor select wider boards, and if you are using tiles select a larger format tile as the fewer grout lines you see the larger and more spacious the room will feel. Arranging your furniture Pushing all your furniture to the edges of your room doesn’t guarantee a larger room, pulling all your furniture away even if it’s just a few centimetres from the wall does indeed create the illusion of being spacious. Try positioning a console table or sofa a few inches away from the wall to make the room feel more open.

Selecting furniture When selecting furniture for a smaller room one tip would be to pick a sofa with legs. This gives the sofa elevation creating a sense of light and space. For a table, a round shape works well as it takes up less space and has no hard corners allowing the harmonious and spacious feel to flow throughout the room. Multiple pieces of smaller furniture will make your room feel cluttered and cramped. Instead, invest in key pieces such as one large couch instead of two sofas. Remember the saying less is more so have a think about the rooms in your home and their functionality and purpose of what the room is intended for to give you inspiration. Mirror Mirror Mirrors are an excellent way to bounce light around the room and can trick the eye into thinking the room space is bigger than it is. Placing a mirror across from a window is the best way as the light can be reflected directly into the room giving the room a much bigger feel. Window treatment To create a spacious feel, try to keep your window covering in the same hue tones as your walls and floor. This will create a seamless look and flow to a room. If you can leave your windows uncovered, this tricks your eyes into thinking your room has depth drawing your eye out into the landscape outdoors. Decorative accessories If you’re lacking on space, having a few treasured decorative items on display is key to not allowing the room to feel less spacious and cluttered. Hopefully, you are now armed with tips and advice on ways you can make a small space within your home look and appear more spacious. Don’t forget to check out our home interiors chic boutique store as well, we can provide you with some perfect home décor. Until next month

Cause for a Cuppa Dare I say “Welcome to Spring 2018!â€?? I am here, sat at my laptop just after the Beast from the East had come through the village bringing snow, ice and freezing temperatures. I hope you have recovered and by the time you get this, the thermometer would be showing a bit more red. We talk a lot about family, children, and all sorts during our chats together. I enjoy these times. As this is Spring, weddings and marriage are in the air. I know the whole concept of marriage is a bit out of vogue in 2018. However, I am still of the opinion that WKH DFW RI PDNLQJ DQ RÉ?FLDO SURPLVH WR HDFK RWKHU God, friends and family is still a good thing. People are complicated. No surprise there, huh?! Steve saw Jo across the room at the local watering hole. “That’s the girl for meâ€?, he thought. Steve saunters over and throws out his best pick up line and so it begins. Little does Steve know the feelings that Jo has buried deep from being assaulted by her brother’s mate when she was just 8 years old. Even VKH GRHVQȇW UHDOLVH KRZ LW KDV DÎ?HFWHG KHU YLHZ RI men. Steve’s mother had gotten pregnant at 16 and battled being a mum at such a young age. She IXQFWLRQHG DV D PXP ZLWK OLWWOH ORYH RU DÎ?HFWLRQ towards her son. Growing up, Steve hungered for her approval and acceptance but felt he could never do anything right no matter how hard he tried. He just wanted to escape. Can this couple make it? Well, the cards are stacked against them. They are physically attracted to each other and before long, sex becomes a regular part of their relationship assuming those feelings will last forever. They get married, looking for the storybook “and they lived happily ever after ‌â€?. So not just for Steve and Jo, but for all of us who have made this commitment to another person, are there things we can do to make it work ‌ or at least work better? I believe there are. Marriage isn’t easy. It takes work. It takes compromise. It takes communication. It takes understanding. Our congregation are familiar with my little story about my experience with Lisa early on. This was nearly 30 years ago but I remember saying ‌ “Well, this is how I fold themâ€?. Oh boy, here we go! Over the years I have tried to search out those who seemed to have had successful marriages, read books and attended conferences. I think one of the most helpful things that I heard was also one of the most unexpected. Someone once commented to me, “do all you can to help your partner succeed with what they are SDVVLRQDWH DERXW Č‹ :KHQ Ζ Č´UVW PHW /LVD VKH ZDV ELJ into Tae Kwon Do. One of the great things about this is that Lisa in turn does all she can to help and support me as a Dad & church leader. I really appreciate that. It is a mutual “helping each other to succeedâ€?. It makes a GLÎ?HUHQFH Do you look for opportunities to help your partner succeed? It could be a hobby. It could be their work or sport. I you can develop that mindset, I believe it will help to deepen your marriage and relationship with each other. If you do some of these things now, drop me a line. I would love to hear how it’s working for you! And as always, the door is open and the kettle is on.

Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper

Your DMBC Councillors Bankwood Lane Most residents around the Bankwood area will now know that the Attero planning application for the proposed new road into that estate has been submitted to the DMBC Planning Department. The application has subsequently been validated which means that the respective Planning officers can begin the consultation process that is an essential part of the planning role. One of the consultees will be our Parish Council who in reality, are the voice of the village. Whilst Village residents can lodge their own views on this application it is important to remember that the Parish Council plays an important role in representing you all. Accordingly, if you wish to raise any issues regarding this application you can bring your concerns to the attention of the Parish representatives who can include your points in their response to the Planning department. A special meeting was convened in March with our residents and Attero at the Holmescarr Centre and DMBC was represented by the Scott Cardwell, Assistant Director of Planning, Doncaster Council. During the same day, Mick had attended a meeting with the Environment Agency and DMBC Officers at the main Doncaster Council Civic office to discuss the forthcoming summer period in respect of the likelihood of a further fly infestation. The Environment Agency was represented by three Officers who have all been engaged on this ongoing blight on resident’s quality of life. Following their meetings with Attero and Morris Metals, these officers reiterated that they do have plans to monitor the sites by way of increased visits. These combined with the appropriate controls should go some way to containing the fly problem. We will not say that these actions will alleviate the problem as history shows that the flies have not read the book which says they will not escape and spoil people’s quality of life. Upon conclusion of this meeting Mick attended further meetings at Attero and Morris Metals on their respective sites so he could visualise exactly what the Environment Agencies actions were going to be focused on. Upon leaving the last site at gone 5.00pm, Mick made his way to his car parked at the top of Bankwood Lane where one of the residents pointed out the number of Lorries entering the carpark after 5.00pm. In just a short period of time 8 lorries entered the car park which prompted a timely conversation with the Attero operative overseeing the parking area. This in turn prompted a response from an Attero Manager who responded by attending the park whereby he instructed the lorries present to vacate the site. The presence of lorries after 5.00pm was a direct violation of Attero’s own internal policy for the parking area. Residents know that the planning process will take many weeks followed by a significant construction period. You do not need us telling you to be patient but we will stress that this planning application is the light at the end of the tunnel. What follows next in terms of the consultation process and the required normal amendments to such schemes needs to be done thoroughly as this is the culmination of the massive effort displayed by all you residents. DHL Lorries through the village. In last month’s article, we asked for volunteers to assist us with identifying the Lorries via their number plates travelling through the village. More volunteers are still required so a comprehensive schedule of people observing the route intro the village via Stripe Road can be prepared and adhered to. This is essential in ensuring that DHL now adhere to the new routing agreement as issued to their drivers. The terms of this are quite strict in that, if any lorry scheduled to visit their facility is identified as coming through the 18 ROSSINGTON TODAY

village in violation of this agreed route, they will not be allowed on site. They will only be allowed on site via the village route if there are exceptional circumstances on the motorway network around Doncaster. Hesley Road. By the time you read this article, the parking bays on Hesley Road should be completed. This positive action by St Leger Homes is another example of how they listen to the concerns of their residents. We trust that the response from the surrounding residents will now be equally positive by refraining from parking or even driving on the grass verge areas which were being churned up in certain areas to a muddy and rutted mess. We did note that there appeared to be several infirm or disabled persons on this estate who were driving across the grass to their front door. We sincerely hope that residents will rally around these residents by allowing them the use of those parking bays in closest proximity to their properties. State of the village. Having been supported by DMBC Street Scene in carrying out the first part of a clean-up of the grass verge areas on the Radburn estate, we are now turning our attention to other open space issues. Whilst being engaged on matters related to the Hesley Road Parking bays a walk about was carried out on the open space to the rear of these properties. The dumping of a huge pile of soil on this area is appalling. The residents responsible for this will know who they are. It is our intention to pursue this in the near future. If it is not removed voluntarily, the appropriate authorities will be involved followed by the required enforcement action. The days of not being able to identify where such arisings came from are long gone due to the use of aerial photographs and the accuracy of soil analysis techniques so we trust that this pile will be removed without delay. The grass underneath it will now be dead and we expect this to be reinstated. Councillors Surgery and future Rossington Today topics Our future articles in this magazine will not focus on those which have featured regularly over the last few months. It is time to move onto other pressing issues which are equally as important in terms of the impact on the village. Due to our busy schedule in the village, Mick is now going to be available every Friday. If you wish to meet with him in person just ring or email him prior to Fridays and he will make himself available. He will continue to hold his surgery on the second Friday of every month from 12.30-2.00pm at the café in the Holmescarr Centre and 2.30 – 3.30 at The Welfare Rachael Tel: 07976896563 Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Mick Tel: 07758089737 Email: mick.cooper@doncaster.gov.uk Kindest regards

WORLD BOOK DAY AT ST MICHAEL’S. We hope that you stayed safe during the recent horrendous weather. Sadly, due to the closure of the school, because of snow, we had to rearrange our World Book Day event, but we held it the following week on Friday 9th March. World Book Day is where everyone in school comes dressed as their favourite book character. The aim of this event is to celebrate reading and encourage children (and adults) to pick up a book and get lost in it. We are very lucky to be a ‘reading school’ where reading is nurtured and encouraged. We understand that there are people in this world who do not have the same opportunities, either because they cannot read or they are too poorly to read. To link in with our World Book Day, we have joined together with ‘Read for Good.’ This is a scheme which encourages children to read for pleasure whilst helping children in WKH FRPPXQLW\ 0RQH\ UDLVHG ZLOO EHQHȴ W FKLOGUHQ LQ FKLOGUHQȇV KRVSLWDOV WR JHW PXFK needed brand new books and regular visits from professional storytellers. On our book day the school took part in a sponsored ‘Readathon’ which is where the children read their favourite book for 20 minutes, either to their friends, their adults in class or themselves. They then collect their sponsor money to be sent to the charity.

Some of our reporters have shared their thoughts on the day: Katie: “Book day, is good for the children EHFDXVH WKH\ JHW WR ORRN DW GL΍ HUHQW characters and see what they are dressed as. It will get them to read more books so that they can level up and read more. The Readathon will help people to understand that people who cannot read well have others to read to them and help them enjoy. It will help us to think more about other people.” Ella: “I think it is good for those who cannot read very well as they get to learn what characters other people are and start to learn about them. It gets people and inspires them to read more. I also feel that it helps people to interact with books”. Poppy: “The inspiring costumes make us want to read more books which will help people in hospitals. More reading = More fun!” Check out pictures of our book day on our website and twitter. Rossington Parish Council • April 2018

Hello Rossington Residents. Easter Eggstravaganza

Rossington Lidl

Don’t forget our Easter Eggstravaganza on Easter Sunday, 1 April 2018 from 11 am to 3 pm at Brodsworth Way Pavilion. For more information go to our Facebook Page.

7KH 3DULVK &RXQFLO PHW ZLWK *DU\ 5DÎ?HUW\ WKH Senior Consultant Acquisitions for Lidl. Their planning application was re-submitted as the positioning of the building had to be moved due to a sewer on the site. This has also created an urban design issue as the side of the building now faces the road. Gary was very positive that they would meet the necessary planning requirements.

Rossington Youth Club I explained last month that Doncaster Council ended all youth provision in Rossington last July. Cllrs have now visited potential buildings in the village. The Condition Survey on the youth club building has been completed so we are hoping to meet with Doncaster Council in the near future. Sadly, we have had very little feedback from young people to our survey on what youth provision they would like. If you or anyone in your family is interested in having your say visit https:// www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LLXPYWJ we promise to listen to all you have to say.

Flower Beds As the last 2 years have been a bit of a disaster, the Parish Council has now contracted with AWS Landscaping who have been out and prepared WKH WXEV DQG ČľRZHU EHGV IRU WKH VXPPHU SODQWLQJ throughout the village. When the planting is complete let us know what you think.

Cemetery Car Park Harworth Estates were due to create the cemetery car park in 2019 but following requests at the Parish Council meeting they are bringing that date forward. They started the preparatory ground works a few weeks ago and have been PRYLQJ PDWHULDOV DURXQG WR PDNH D ČľDW DUHD WKDW will form a suitable level site to stone up. Duncan Armstrong-Payne is about to sit down with my colleagues to design the internal arrangement for the car park. He will then send the designs to the Parish Council for comment so they can implement the scheme this summer.

Rossington Miners Wheel The decision has been taken to site the wheel on the former pit shaft. The Parish Council will work closely with Harworth Estates on the exact site plus any potential memorial, tree planting and commemorations of lives lost by adults and children at the pit. Harworth Estates are funding this project. 36 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Lidl Distribution Centre Gary explained that Lidl is hoping to have their distribution centre on the iPort Centre open in March 2019. Their goal is to employ local people whenever possible.

New Link Road The planning application for Phase One of the link road from West End Lane through to the Attero site has now been submitted. This will include a solution to the current lorry park location at the junction of Bankwood Lane and West End Lane. It is expected that Phase One will take approximately 4 weeks to construct subject to all appropriate planning permissions being obtained.

Bench The Rossington Environmental Group has donated a bench for the village. After a vote from the public, Grange Lane near the Asda was the favourite position. Once the exact location has EHHQ Č´QDOLVHG ZH ZLOO LQIRUP \RX

Mr Askwith, seen photographed with Cadet Lance Corporal Chloe Gardner, engaged the Cadets in a lively debate after delivering a talk on the history of the RBL, its role in society and explaining how the organisation is funded. Detachment Commander, Lt Chris Ledger, said after the visit “It has been a pleasure to welcome Mr Askwith and the Royal British Legion into our Detachment.

He captured the attention of the Cadets and, after their discussions around what DÉ? OLDWLRQ PHDQW IRU XV KH KDQGHG RXW 5%/ badges to each of them.
