Welcome to the April 2015 edition
April already, and Easter is nearly upon us. Two thirds of the way through the school year and exams are once again looming, only a month to go now, until formal exams start. Two children in my household will be taking exams this year, one doing AS levels and another doing GCSE’s. That also means 2 separate exam results days to look forward to in August! Good luck to everyone reading this with exams on the horizon. We enjoyed celebrating Today Publication’s 10th anniversary during March, and as part of this I stepped outside of my comfort zone and agreed to be a guest on Andrew Isaac’s ‘Doncaster is Great’ radio show on SineFM. A podcast of the hour long show which went out on 18th March may still be available on the SineFM website should anybody wish to have a listen!

A kitchen update for you. My new kitchen is due to be delivered the same day as the pallets with these magazines on, by which time the old one will hopefully have been removed. After hours of research, all of my shiny new appliances are also due on various days of the same week. So the fun is about to begin! It is possible that we will be spotted making full use of our range of local restaurants and takeaways over the next few weeks, until the new kitchen is fully operational. More details next month! The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th April.
Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x

Life Struggles... Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. I REALLY appreciate all the kind comments from those who read this. Thanks again to Paula at Rossington Today who has been so gracious over the years to allow me to do this. Over the last 4 months or so, we have developed a friendship with a family from a European country … and shock of all shocks, the battles they face as a family are the SAME ones we have here! Though I was being a bit cheeky, it is true that regardless of where we grew up, the school we attended or whether we like Marmite or not (I don’t!), our struggles in life are so similar. I will readily admit my Cause diary is a bit off as Easter is so early this year, I bypassed Mother’s Day and went right to Easter last month. So I am going to throw it into reverse and re-visit Mother’s Day for a bit
Mother’s Day is one of those days that brings more memories and emotion to people than POSSIBLY any other day. I know we speak every year round this time of the year on the subject of mum. I do find that often the thoughts and memories are good … but anger, bitterness and pain are not too far behind. The reasons behind that are numerous. Did you know the 5th commandment is to “Honour your mother and father”? It does not say “If all went well and you are without any painful memories … honour”. Honour means respect/value but not just for what they did but for who they are. The “what” they did is the hard bit. My mum was not perfect (none are). I was bitter for a fair few years after the divorce. She was not able to be Dad and Mum (no surprise there) like I felt I needed. It was actually not until I became a parent did I truly understand how hard it was being a parent. Though I have mentioned this in the past, it needs another go. A turning point for me was to get what
it meant to “honour” my mum. I looked for all the positive qualities - and there were many. Listening to a talk one time, I was challenged to write a Tribute to Mum. It was to express thankfulness for what she had done … forgiveness for any failures … appreciation for her role as Mum. I wrote it, printed it out on my dot matrix printer (remember those?), bought a frame and presented it to her at tea one day. I was embarrassed as the unwritten rule in my house was that you didn’t express feelings or emotions. But I did it. Over the years mum kept it. As she downsized, knowing the end was in sight, it remained as one of her treasured possessions. When she breathed her last, the Tribute stood on her bedside. I would have never guessed what it meant to her. You don’t have to wait until Mother’s Day to do this. Why not take the challenge and let me know how it goes. As always the door is open and the kettle is on.

Rossington Councillor’s Update up for better paid jobs.
I am writing this waiting to go to the full Council Meeting, the budget setting meeting and hope that it goes well. The budget is an enormous document 192, A4 pages long and the whole Agenda is over 400 pages long, a lot of reading, it has taken days to read and I still want to be a Councillor!
As the rumours fly about the PGA golf course, I decided to ask the head of our Planning department about this and was told that although nothing was firm yet, it looked like there would be an application for planning permission in the summer as things had progressed with the consortium and the PGA had allowed use of their name. An environment impact assessment and an ecological impact assessment have to be done and a paper archaeological survey also had to be done. The Boundary Commission’s plans have been put in place and we are officially Rossington and Bawtry Ward and I have received the paperwork to confirm this, the Register of Voters. So as of the 8th May the Ward Councillors have Bawtry Town Council and Austerfield Parish Council to help. There is also a huge increase in area which includes the runway of the airport, but not the buildings.
It is now over and as my colleague Hilary McNamee is retiring I got to thank her, because she has been of great help and is a good a friend as you can have. I can only hope that we get Councillors as good as her for the sake of Rossington. For her last meeting she and I had to suffer the opposition be it Tories or UKIP people talking for what seemed like hours and hours. I think that it will be like this from now on so I shall have to learn (if elected) to be very, very patient.
We had a Communities and Environment Scrutiny Panel meeting with the voluntary and community sector to start the writing on the Council’s or I should say ‘Team Doncaster’s’ strategy for the sector. If not exciting it was interesting. If you wish to volunteer to help there are two websites that may assist you select the area you may wish to help out in: http://newhorizonsdoncaster. co.uk/ & http://www.doncastercvs.org.uk/
The meeting started with a bang as a professed UKIP supporter called a Cabinet Member a liar and the Chair had to make him sit down and be quiet. Then we passed the budget that was cut again, and St Leger’s budget then agreed the Council Tax rise of 1.95%. I had looked and looked for the money for the Market and couldn’t see it, but just before I was going to stand up and object and cause a stink, I found it in the one area I didn’t expect it to be; in the place where it should be! So for the third year in a row the money is in the budget. The question is, will this be the year that it will be spent.
Don’t forget in May please vote for me as Ward Councillor: Kindest Regards
Richard Cooper-Holmes Tel: 01302 864668 or 07887 573109
I’ve had a meeting about the start of a new training centre for Rossington, ‘The Logistics College’. This will be paid for by Section 106 money from the Inland Port and hopefully other funding from, perhaps the Lottery, the Prince’s Trust and maybe even Europe. If we can get this off the ground we can then, maybe, really see a difference in Rossington as more and more are trained 10

Garden Projects... ...GO! “April is a great month for a garden project “ April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.
Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.
Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.
Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.

RUN MUM RUN! Parenting brings untold joy. It also brings a rather large amount of stress! Unfortunately, this stress reduces our ability to think clearly, be organised, make good decisions and complete tasks. The good news is that this process can be reversed in just 15 minutes! We know that exercise regulates stress and energy hormones and the benefits of exercise are well documented. BUPA recently conducted a survey to investigate the effects on a specific group – mums! They asked 500 mums to run for 15 minutes a day and compared their responses with 500 non-running mums.
Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE
A massive 79% of mums surveyed said they felt running for 15 minutes a day had made them a better parent. Running mums found it easier to juggle everyday tasks and had more energy. 86% of those who ran said they felt in control of life most of the time compared with just 50% of non-runners. One of the barriers to exercise was time with 1/3 of non running mums saying that they struggled to find time to exercise. However, the mums who ran reported actually spending more quality time with their children which supports the argument that you need to make time to gain time. Looking to the future, your activity levels now will influence your children’s lifestyle choices both now and in the future so 15minutes a day really is a worthwhile investment. It’s unlikely that running is the only exercise to provide such benefits but running is probably the most convenient way for most people to exercise intensely for 15 minutes. So, how about turning the school run into a life changing run?

It is just the Labour Party that has chosen Candidates from elsewhere. I hope this helps and best of luck to everyone. It is good news about the PGA Golf course, although not everyone will be happy, but it brings some employment, enhances the local environment and brings national attention to our village. The second phase of FARRRS is already attracting the expansion of the Enterprise Zone towards Rossington, even before it is laid. A specialist Agricultural Company have received authority to site a centre of excellence for their products off Hurst Lane. I have been actively engaged in some potential extra development for employment with some leading "Blue Chip" companies. This has hit a bit of a hurdle due to the land designation around Rossington, but if we can persuade DMBC in its plans for future land usage, we could offer more opportunities to attract new companies and investment. I wish everyone a Happy Easter and I hope to write more soon It would be a great pleasure and honour if you could support me in May, so we can continue our endeavours on your behalf.

Rossington Parish h Council £2000 per month. But we needed it, and the unemployed received help.
The Parish Council has 15 Councillors so we need at least 15 candidates, in fact the more the merrier. Just as a reminder, I’m up for election, so please vote for me. What we really need is Parish Councillors who do things not just turn up to meetings. Our meetings are important, it is where we decide our direction and plan how we will spend your money to its’ best effect. But, we are the most proactive Parish Council in Doncaster and we need people who will help organise and join in what we want to do for the village.
I have told you before that our precept is going up. The percentage is an arguable point, but basically it is going up about £7.00 per year for a band D property, less for band A and more for band H. this is mainly due to having to pay for the election at £12,000 and having Government grants reduced. We have cut the costs of most things, but some things just had to be paid for! I’m sorry that this has to happen, but we as a Parish Council do want you, the people, to benefit from the money we collect, not for us to spend it on the Parish Council as so many Parish Councils do. Now, the never ending saga of the market place refurbishment, Mexborough’s is about to start apparently, Rossington’s starts after that has finished and then we’ll have to see what they will do, there has been no communication or consultation. I heard a rumour that just to make the electrics safe used up a lot of the money! It is absolutely disgusting the way Rossington has been treated. It must be because it is looked on as a safe Labour seat and we can be treated in any way they like.
It is important for you to elect a Parish Council who will do what it is supposed to do, run the business of the Parish an ensuring that everything we are responsible for gets done in a proper manner in open and fair way. That to me means working for the good of those that cannot do it for themselves. The young and old are to me the ones we should be concentrating on and I would like to think that every Parish Councillor would think that way. You may be surprised at the range of things we support and help, not the more obvious ones we advertise, but the hidden things that people miss and a prime example of this is the Opportunity Centre, miss-named in my opinion, because it is a job shop, but the name does not reflect what it does. Our unemployment figures are now lower than Doncaster as a whole. We have only 258 on job seeker’s allowance, 3.1% compared to 3.3% for Doncaster. It is a sad state when we have any unemployed at all, but thanks to the Opportunity centre, funded by the Parish Council 120 people a year extra to the norm are in jobs than the rest of Doncaster. All I can say is that the Parish Council took a brave decision to fund the Opportunity Centre and it has paid off for our unemployed.
It is a fight to get anything and just getting the simple things that we are due is sometimes just hard work. The backs on Radburn Road, the condition of our roads, the lack of zebra crossings and even good shops. We as a Parish Council have to pay for our own flowers and Christmas Lights; the town centre and adjoining areas don’t have to pay anything it is unfair and it should be the same across the borough. It is just a list that goes on and on so …………. Don’t forget the elections on May 7th and please vote for me in both elections, DMBC and Parish.
Richard Cooper-Holmes Chairman, Rossington Parish Council
Peter Davies as Mayor wanted to shut all 11 Opportunity Centres in Doncaster’s most deprived areas and I fought a particularly hard and difficult battle to keep ours open, and open it is the only one left. I won in the short term, but the money ran out, or rather it was spent on Doncaster Market, so the Parish Council took over and kept it open at a cost of 28

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, There is a story of a black South African woman who stood in an emotionally charged courtroom listening to white police officers acknowledge the atrocities they had perpetrated in the name of apartheid. Officer van de Broek accepted that he was guilty for the death of her son. He and his police friends had shot her eighteen-year-old son at point-blank range. They partied while they burned his body, turning it over on the fire until it was ashes. Eight years later, this same policeman and his friends arrived to seize her husband. Hours later, van de Broek came to fetch the woman. He took her to a woodpile where her husband lay bound. She was forced to watch as they poured petrol over his body and ignited the flames that consumed his body. The last words her husband said were “Forgive them.” As van de Broek stood awaiting judgement, the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked the woman what she wanted. The woman stated, “Mr. van de Broek took all my family away from me, and I still have a lot of love to give. Twice a month, I would like for him to come to the ghetto and spend a day with me so I can be a mother to him.” That was not all. She added, “I would like Mr. van de Broek to know that he is forgiven by God and that I forgive him, too. I would like someone to lead me to where he is seated so I can embrace him and he can know my forgiveness is real.” As the elderly woman was led across the courtroom, van de Broek fainted. The story of Good Friday rings a bell in this story. Jesus was tortured and crucified amongst two thieves. Whiles dying on the cross, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23: 34). I wonder who has offended you and how you’re dealing with the situation. Yes, humanly speaking, you want to break even with the person but what happens afterwards may be devastating. Other people would want to keep the hurt in themselves and bear the brunt of anger and hatred. That is not the spirit of the Easter season. At Easter, Christians believe that God in the form of his Son Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead after the third day. Through that we are liberated from sin and all its clutches. We are forgiven when we confess and repent from our shortcomings. We can therefore come to God and ask him to help us forgive those who have offended us. We can also ask him to help us ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. As you celebrate Easter, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider reconciling with people who have offended you in the past so that you may have the peace you need in your life. Have a blessed Easter season.

Caroline Flint Hopefully, most Rossington residents know that Network Rail intend to close the level crossing on West End LaneStation Road ready for 140 mph trains in 2020. They chose to consult last summer on what kind of bridge would be needed. Only a few hundred people took part. At the time, a number of residents contacted me about how large a road bridge would be, and its impact. They also asked why a decision on this couldn’t wait until the FARRRS Rossington Link Road opened (at the end of 2015). I have fought for FARRRS since 1997. It has taken 18 years to win to give Rossington another route in and out of the village to the M18 and Doncaster town centre. It was a mistake for Network Rail to try to resolve the level crossing issue, without looking at what will happen when FARRRS opens. We all want what is best for Rossington, but it is important that all of Rossington’s elected representatives ensure that Rossington’s 10,000 people need to have their say. As a result of more community discussion Network Rail have received petitions from over 800 residents. So I am delighted that Network Rail have now agreed to wait until FARRRS opens before any final decision is made. FARRRS is a fantastic development for Rossington. Network Rail will be able to see how important road access is along West End Lane once FARRRS is up and running, creating a new road bridge over the East Coast mainline. They will monitor journeys over the summer of 2016 and do a final consultation with you in the autumn. This makes much more sense. After waiting so many years for FARRRS, the village shouldn’t be bounced into a hasty decision on the level crossing. And whatever Rossington wants, I will support. Thanks to everyone who has written to me about this important issue for the village. For information go to www.carolineflint.org

Gymnast’s Success Two of Elmfield Gymnastics Club’s gymnasts, Hollie Loosemore (from Rossington) and Spencer Mallender have secured a place in the British NDP tumbling semi-finals. They had to finish 1st or 2nd in the Yorkshire qualifying competition to gain a place in the British semi-final, which both gymnasts succeeded in, against lots of strong competition. Spencer also managed a score of 9.1 out of 10 which was the highest score given by this judge throughout the whole day. For Hollie this is her first British competition and for Spencer this is the 4th consecutive year he has gone through and he is hoping to build on his two 3rd place British medals he received in 2012 and 2013. Good luck to both of them, we look forward to hearing how they get on. T
