Today

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversit y, prosperit y would not be so welcome.” Anne Bradstreet Officially Spring is here and looking around it would seem that nature agrees. At the time of writing we are enjoying some sunshine filled days and the air is alive with the sound of birdsong. Long may it last! The delivery window for this magazine includes both Mother’s Day and the start of British Summer Time, lighter nights and longer days are on the way. Springtime often starts people thinking about their homes, whether it is for a traditional spring clean or more drastic changes. If you are planning home or garden improvements this Spring and Summer you will find a huge range of people to help you within the pages of this magazine. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give them a call. The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 12th April. We usually see the start of the summer events in May so please don’t forget to get the details to me in good time to publicise your event. Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.

Best wishes,

Co-operative

Local Forum Ageing well through yoga As we age our muscle mass declines; cartilage erodes, membranes harden, and fluid thickens. These contribute to stiffness, gait problems, lessened mobility and limited range of motion. Muscle mass can decline to almost 50% in old age. We can also become more susceptible to chronic problems such as arthritis, osteoporosis and heart disease as we age. Sounds pretty depressing right? And many people almost accept this is an inevitable part of growing older.

6

In the Doncaster area The Co-operative Group are currently Piloting a new strategy – Co-operative Local Forums (CLF), where we are going back to the roots of The Co-operatives values and principles, and supporting the local communities in which we serve. The aim of the CLF is to: • Provide a sounding board for any community ideas you have

But we don’t have to accept this is part of getting older. As a yoga teacher, and in my 65th year myself, I believe yoga is one of the most effective, most enjoyable and most profoundly powerful strategies for helping us deal with almost every single one of the ageing processes. And it is accessible to everyone - no matter where you’re at; no matter how stiff you feel; no matter what your age.

• Update you on our new Membership Proposition/Local Community Fund

You may not have any control over your birth date: you have masses of control over how you look after your body and how you perceive growing older. Yoga will help you. No matter how you learn; no matter how you practise - whether you learn through a video or book, or go to a class, give yoga a try. Learning a few simple techniques and then just 15 minutes 4 or 5 times a week can make a significant difference to how you feel and how you age.

• Our next forum will include a special presentation given by a member of our Co-op Legal Services team who will give a brief talk on Estate Planning – “Tax, Care and Toy Boys”. Questions welcome.

And if you’d like to learn more about my classes contact me (Shona) on 07904 262877 or shona@yogaover45.co.uk T

We are holding our next CLF meeting at Auckley Parish Centre, St Saviours Church, Main Street, Doncaster DN9 3HW on Wednesday 26th April 2017 @ 7.00pm . This is a very friendly and informal meeting and is expected to last for approximately 2 hours. Co-op “Irresistible” range of refreshments will be served. For more information & to confirm your place please email or call Darren Alexander on doncasterclf@gmail.com or 07715852695 or Dot Miller on 07703358889. T

It’s SPRING! Cause for a Cuppa!

Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa! April … and that means Spring! Of all the seasons, Spring is probably my favourite. There just seems to be something exciting about the flowers popping up out of the ground and trees budding. Going out without heavy jackets and the sun (well, you know …) on your face just does something. Easter also comes along with Spring. As we come into adulthood, I would reckon most people would be aware of the Christian concept of the resurrection of Jesus. We may not get it, understand it or ask “What’s the point?”. But at least we have heard of it. This Easter I want to take a bit of a turn and just have a word about someone you might not have heard in connection with the story. His name is Peter. We have a lady in church whose favourite character is this Peter. He’s a maverick. He’s a big mouth. He’s one of those who speaks up first and thinks second. (‘course no one would EVER be like that, huh?!) He means well but he messes up. And he messes up in a big way. He may be kind of like us in some ways. I know his messing up is different than our messing up. But at the end of the day, it is still … well, messing up. Jesus was nearing the time of the cross. He said that He was going to go that someone who would betray him. Without a second’s hesitation, Peter came back. “I will never leave you!” Jesus turned to him and said, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny that you even know me … three times”

That couldn’t be! Not Peter. Not the one who walked with Jesus for 3 years, who saw the miracles, people healed and the dead brought back to life. Why, Peter would surely be true to his word. Jesus then went to the Mount of Olives to spend time alone before the inevitable. The Roman guard came to arrest Him and bring Him back for questioning. All the disciples scattered except for Peter .. and probably John. They must have followed at a distance. It was dark. You could not have invented the drama that was to follow. Jesus was facing His questioners, soon to be executioners. As Peter was outside, ears straining to hear what was happening, he was approached. A voice came towards him, “I know you. You are one of His followers”. Peter shot back, “No, I’m not!”. Soon thereafter, another comment … “Yes you are, I know I have seen you with Him”. “You don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t know Him!”. And yet a 3rd time, “I’m sure I have seen you”. Peter, on this third time called down a curse on himself in his denial. He was scared! At that moment the eyes of Peter and Jesus meet … just as the rooster crowed. Jesus was led out. Peter ran, crying in agony over what had just happened. What was he experiencing? Guilt? Disgust in himself? Disbelief that he would do the very thing he said he wouldn’t? Surely God would never accept him after such a thing. That is a bleak picture for sure. But here’s the amazing ending. Yes, Jesus was crucified. And yes, He rose from the dead as He said He would. The incredible bit is that Jesus, whom Peter denied that he even knew … would call Peter, tell him that He loves him and has a plan and purpose for Him. Wow, talk about a 2nd chance. I’m so glad God is a God of 2nd chances. As we were talking about forgiveness last month, it tied perfectly into Peter’s story. Peter wasn’t a “throwaway”. You aren’t a throwaway. Why not check it out this Easter time?! Have a wonderful Easter, holiday from school and time with family. And as always, the door is open and the kettle is on. :)

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

We are finally into Spring when fundraising seems to take a big leap forward! There will be a coffee morning at Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Church on 22 April from 10am to 12 noon where we will be selling scarves as well as holding a raffle. Also advance notice that we will have a stall at Wadworth Gala on Sunday, 4th June selling scarves, donated jewellery and a tombola. Our popular Midsummer Walk will take place on Sunday, 11th June - make a note of the date and further details will be issued nearer the time. We have yet to finalise a date with Frenchgate Centre for our Mile of Coins appeal in May. However, you can start collecting coins now (and help to recycle plastic waste) by using small plastic drinks bottles. Just empty your purse/pockets of small change every day (the wide necked bottles are best) and see them fill up. Also, did you know that the current £1 coins are gradually being replaced by new multi-sided new ones? This will start during March and continue until October. Why not donate your old £1 coins to us? We will gladly accept your (hopefully full!) drinks bottles at any time. Just contact us at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW or telephone 01302 325029 (answering machine if not in office) or mobile 07950 798885. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk.

Doncaster Heritage Festival 2017

Love History Love Doncaster Heritage Festival Celebrate the richness and variety of heritage in the borough at this year’s Doncaster Heritage Festival 22nd April – 7th May 2017. The 2017 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched at the Doncaster Local History Fair on Saturday 22nd April at Doncaster Museum Chequer Road. The highlight of the festival will be the talk given by Professor Carenza Lewis, of Time Team fame, regarding the Black Death of the mid-14th century and its effects on Britain. Carenza’s talk will look at her ten year programme of 2,000 archaeological excavations in the village gardens of Yorkshire and Eastern England, which has shown how badly the communities were affected by the plague. Over the festival fortnight there will be a series of fascinating events, talks, walks, workshops and a heritage-based pub quiz night. Events are being held at a wide range of venues across the borough and at a variety of times so as many people as possible will have a chance to take part in the festival. There is something for everyone to enjoy! The festival is organised by Doncaster Heritage Services and is supported by heritage groups across Doncaster for all to enjoy. For more information about the Festival please contact: Doncaster Local Studies call 01302 734307 or email central.localhistory@doncaster. gov.uk. Visit www.doncaster.gov.uk/heritagefestival for event details as they become available. “We look forward to seeing you there” T 12

Environmental concerns addressed by clean-up campaign An area of Rossington that was blighted by environmental problems has been tidied up by volunteers and council staff during the Great British Spring Clean. Staff members from local business Morris Metals, which owns the land in question, helped to carry out a full-scale clean up and address the environmental issues that have worried residents. Although private land, the area near the Bankwood Lane industrial estate in Rossington is regularly used by dog-walkers and other members of the community. There have been consistent complaints about environmental issues, including dumped waste and rats in the area. Morris Metals staff joined council staff to give the area a thorough clean, and it was left looking markedly better than it has done for some time. Tom Morris of Morris Metals said: “We are pleased to assist with efforts to keep the local area in good condition. We are happy to announce we will be holding an open day to help the local residents better understand what we do as a company to help the environment and increase recycling rates. Further details will be distributed in the near future.’’ Doncaster Council Cabinet Member for Communities, the Voluntary Sector and Environment, Cllr Chris McGuinness, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who supported the Great British Spring Clean for their fantastic efforts. The hard work that took place will have a really positive impact on local communities, and will hopefully encourage more volunteers to get involved in looking after the environment.” T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

DONCASTER 51ST GUIDES

Rossington

Currently have spaces for Girls aged 10 – 14 years. We help girls discover the best in themselves through fun, friendship and adventure. We help them build confidence; learn real life skills that prepare them for later on in life, as well as self-reliance and teamwork or just talking to people even though they may be shy. It even gives them opportunities to work for awards that will look good on their CV when they start to think about work, college or university. The BBC reported in November 2016 on a lifelong study of over 10,000 people in the UK which suggests that women who were in GUIDES in childhood have better mental health in later life. Girls don’t have to be great at outdoor activities or sports, the Guides will help girls find those types of skills … Whether it’s going on a camp or just playing some games, we offer a safe space where girls can be themselves, build their confidence and escape from the ever-increasing pressures in their lives.

On 22nd April in Everton Village Hall this popular duo will be presenting a show called “Licenced to Trill”. Although the entertainers are two trained operatic tenors, who have performed at top international venues including Covent Garden, the President’s Palace in Malta, Villa Carlotta in Lake Como and various theatres in Manhattan, the show is not exactly grand opera. It’s more Il Divo meets Morecambe and Wise! Blending opera, swing, show songs and good clean ‘Carry On’ fun, this unique double act is outrageously brilliant and a whole lot entertaining. You can see more information about the Opera Dudes on their web site: http://www.operadudes.com/ Doors will open at 6:30pm and we will be serving a hot meal at 6:45 to start things off. A sweet course will be served in the interval. There will be a licensed bar serving quality wines, beers and soft drinks. Rossington Parish Council Rossington Parish Council is happy for you to contact us via our Facebook Page Rossington Parish Council 2016 email the Clerk at anne@rossingtonparishcouncil.org. uk or ring Anne or Zoe on 01302 864731. Parish Council Meetings Take place at 7pm on the second Tuesday of every month (apart from August) to which residents are most welcome. The Parish also facilitates partners to attend meetings to inform the Parish and residents as part of their Communication Strategy. Doncaster Youth Alliance – Youth Provision Peter Norman, the Strategic Development Director of Doncaster Youth Alliance attended the Parish Council meeting on 14 February 2017. He explained that DMBC will have wound down the youth provision in Doncaster by 31 July 2017 as statutorily they do not have to provide the service. The Youth Alliance is made up of Doncaster Rovers Community Foundation, Doncaster ARTS, Doncaster Children’s Services, Active Fusion and Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust. Peter felt that Rossington was very active and had good facilities as well as the RAP Programme. DMBC are offering limited funding for 3 years so the Youth Alliance are also applying to the Government for Funding of around £½ million for Doncaster. Peter is happy to attend Parish Council meetings on a regular basis to update the Council on progress of the Youth Alliance so watch this space. Doncaster Frack Free Kate Needham also attended the Parish Council meeting on 14 February 2017 explaining that Doncaster Frack Free is a none political campaign group that raises awareness and campaigns against fracking in Doncaster. She explained the process, raising concerns

about seismic testing, high volume hydraulic fracturing, chemicals being left in the ground and the disposal of the slurry that includes poisonous compounds that comes out of the ground. Also the waste and slurry is trucked in and out of the site so there is a massive increase in heavy traffic. One selling point was the increase in local jobs but she explained most of the jobs are not local plus any jobs created are offset by the loss of jobs in the solar and other environmental industries. Meeting with Elected Mayor On 21 February 2017, Ros Jones, Doncaster’s Elected Mayor plus 7 Senior DMBC Officers from Development, Communities, Projects and Investment, Environmental Protection, Regeneration, Highways and Planning Departments attended a meeting at the Memorial Hall. The key issues on the agenda were speeding traffic, particularly from the new link road up to West End Lane, excess heavy traffic, dirt from the traffic, business operating hours and the planning application for the lorry park on Bankwood Lane. The Mayor and Senior Officers addressed all the questions from residents with promises to follow up any issues still outstanding. The minutes from this meeting are available on the Parish Facebook Page, Website or by contacting the Clerk. Thank you: One resident wanted to thank the Parish Council for putting on this meeting. He felt it was good that residents had someone on their side. He felt he had learned more at that meeting that at any other time. Rossington Activity Programme (RAP) Last summer, the Parish Council fully funded the Programme of Activities for local children and young people throughout the 6 weeks holiday. It was a great success culminating in the Rossington’s Got Talent show at the Miners Continued on page 30

Fuchsia Perfect I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental. They are named after a 16th Century German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. In mild areas or at the seaside they can grow into huge shrubs. Elsewhere hard frosts see off most of the top growth in winter, then new shoots burst up from the soil in the spring, maturing into small shrubs about 2-3 feet / 60-100cm tall. At this time of year rooted cuttings are cheap. Grow them on for a few weeks under cover, changing the pot to a slightly larger one as they grow, then plant them out in May. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Make sure you pinch out the shoot tips frequently. It delays the flowers a little but they will become bushy little plants which produce more flowers in the long-run. Once they are mature you can more or less leave them to it. Simply sprinkle a handful or two of fertiliser around them in the spring and again in the summer. There are lots of lovely varieties. “Mrs. Popple” is tall with red and 32 ROSSINGTON TODAY

purple flowers. “Mrs. W. P. Wood” is paler with pearly flowers. I have a soft spot for “Whiteknight’s Pearl” which is a beautiful pale pink. If you have a smaller plot try “Tom Thumb” or “Alice Hoffman”. It’s a little known fact that the berries and inner petals of fuchsias are edible (though it’s worth noting that ‘edible’ doesn’t mean they necessarily taste good!). However there is now a variety bred especially for eating. It’s called “Berry” and produces fruit with a flavour something like a sweet fig. The fuchsia berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They don’t have a long shelf life so pick them when they are soft and squishy and eat them fresh, or freeze small quantities as you collect them, until you have enough to make fuchsia jam or add to muffins, much as you might add blueberries. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake

Gattison House - The future of Gattison House is something that residents have asked me about as well as wanting an explanation about why DMBC have taken the action it has. Last year councillors were asked to meet with DMBC Adult Services to talk about Gattison House. Whilst the care provided by the staff is excellent, the accommodation is considered to be outdated and in need of improving and therefore older people and their families are choosing other homes. When I met with Adult Services, the home was only 30% full. They also talked about an extra care scheme similar to what they have in other areas such as Armthorpe and Edlington, schemes that most residents I have talked to would welcome for the village. The plans for this were discussed at DMBCs Cabinet meeting last year and it was stated that “The intended proposal for the Gattison site is a mixed tenure development of flexible older people’s housing together with general needs accommodation, to help meet the varied needs of residents in Rossington.” Nothing will happen to Gattison House until the new facility at Cantley is built so 12-18 months before any changes happen and I will keep you updated.

Mud and problems on the new link road - The condition of the road is not acceptable and whilst everyone appreciates that building work has to take place, there are management plans in place which all of the companies should have in place. Following my complaints to DMBC, I received confirmation that measures have been put in place to prevent mud being deposited by developers and Harworth estates and wheel washing facilities installed. In addition, because of the numbers of reports of vehicles losing control, a review is taking place to review the skid resistance properties of the road - I will ensure I include the result of this in future updates. On 29 March, the Welfare are starting their Cabaret Show from 12- 3pm. Go along for an afternoon of music and laughter and ideal for people who don’t like to go out in the evening. Tickets are £5 in advance and £6 on the door. RAP – summer holiday activities for children and teenagers - We met with the Parish Council in March and they were very supportive of the activity programme that groups and organisations from Rossington wanted to put on for children and young people in the summer holidays. The Parish Council have agreed in principle to fund it, which is going to be fantastic for the village. Holmescarr Wood - I had a lovely walk through the wood with 2 residents who wanted to show me the problems with drainage which are occurring. I have been in contact with Harworth estates that are responsible for the land and have taken over from Recycoal and developing the country park and asked them to resolve the drainage issues. Rossington Cemetery - I continue to work with DMBCs Street Scene team to ensure that the cemetery continues to improve. It is good to see how over the last 18 months 34 ROSSINGTON TODAY

DMBC Councillor

when I asked DMBCs senior managers to meet me at the cemetery to show them what a dreadful state it was in, how much it has improved. There is still work to do around the bin areas, which DMBC’s Bereavement Services are going to be dealing with. Residents, who have been in contact, have commented that it has improved but if you have suggestions for further improvement, please get in touch. Kevin, (more details below) attended the Friends of Rossington Cemetery clean up on 4 March and I am sure further clean ups will be arranged in the future. Bankwood Lane issues - The Mayor, Ros Jones attended a meeting organised by the Parish Council and has also written in Rossington Today about the work that has happened, but the situation continues. I had a walk with a resident who wanted to show me the dreadful state of the rear of Morris Metals. The response that I received from the Environment Agency was very disappointing, and I have made a complaint about the lack of action that they are taking over this and the lack of action on many issues over the last 18 months. I was told by the officer at a meeting that with confidence he could say that the fly issue had been dealt with and there wouldn’t be a problem this year, but with just a few days of warmer weather the flies are again causing a problem which I have reported to the officer who told me it wouldn’t be a problem. I will continue to work with residents to object to the planning application – the lorry park should not be where it is and residents should not have to continue to suffer because of it. Elections 4 May – Local and Mayoral Elections - For councillors, it is what is known as an “all out” election so every Councillor has to be re-elected. I am delighted that the Rossington branch of the Labour Party has chosen me to stand for re-election and that Kevin Fennelly and Mick Cooper have been selected to stand with me as well. Many of you will know Kevin and Mick as they are long standing residents from Rossington and between us, if elected we will work together as a good team. Already, they are coming to my surgeries with me and attending meetings such as Radburn TARA and the Parish Council and we will be out and about in the village over the next 6 weeks. Surgery My next surgery will be on: Friday 7 April from 12.30 – 1.45pm at the café at the Holmescarr Centre and from 2.30 – 4pm at Miners Welfare, West End Lane. Please don’t wait for my surgery – I am happy to meet anytime. My contact details: Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael.blake@ doncaster.gov.uk Kind regards

Patron Her Majesty The Queen

Rossington Branch of the

Royal British Legion Meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 1900hrs in the Rossington Miner’s Welfare Lounge Bar All serving, Ex service personnel, friends & family welcome

Last month, we told you we were working on several projects related to those whose names are shown on the memorial stone outside St Michael’s Church, and who are commemorated as the fallen in the 1914-18 war. We are now liaising with some Doncaster groups that have been working on similar projects since 2014. Ultimately, we hope that our work will be enhanced by working with those groups and have the work retained as part of the boroughwide approach to the anniversary of that war.

We are still experiencing issues with uploading photos and indeed, some have been lost because of changing arrangements for holding and hosting the website. We hope that this will be rectified as soon as possible, but in the meantime, we are putting back those photos that were on the site prior to the changes. Isn’t technology wonderful! We don’t only hold stories that are from a long time ago, but we have those from current events, and we would be pleased to hear from you if you have a story and photos that we can upload to be retained on the website. If you have memories and photos you would like to see on the website, or in the display box in the library, contact Elaine Spencer on 07771 672561 and we’ll arrange to meet or collect from you, returning anything that you loan to us. If you like photographing around Rossington and have present day pictures we can upload and display, we would love to hear from you. The website aims to keep documented the past, present and future of Rossington. Our meetings are on Mondays at 10 am on a fortnightly basis at Holmescarr café and if you want to come along, use the number above to check on the date of the next one.
