Welcome to

the August 2015 edition

“The best thing about Memories is making them” Summer already, and at the time of writing most schools are in their final week, so by the time you receive this, the school holidays will be here! As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays. My older, increasingly independent children aren’t as keen on activities with Mum as when they were younger but I am sure we will still enjoy some family time, while they are still all at home. Just another year before the first potentially leaves for University. August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this quiet period (and the rest of the time too). The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Saturday 15th August. Please be mindful of my usual tight turnaround time on the September magazine as I try to avoid spending too many hours glued to my computer during August. Please send in your contributions as always but do your very best to meet the copy deadline! Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September ‘back to school’ magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

JOINT VENTURE PUTS CAREERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT A young illustrator is celebrating success after her designs were published in a new book that gives careers advice to teenagers. The book, Your Choice, Your Future, has been written by Doncaster-based life coach Sandra Greatorex who runs Butterfly Transformation and works with people of all ages across South Yorkshire who are starting or changing careers. Sandra was coaching 18-year-old Sarah Bradley who was undecided about what to do after leaving sixth-form when she spotted her hidden talents as an illustrator and gave her the opportunity to collaborate on the book. Sarah is now studying History and History of Art at Reading University and is delighted with the finished product and the valuable experience she gained. “I wish I had been given the opportunity to read this book when I was younger as it really helped me to consider my choices,” she commented. Sandra explained: “Your Choice, Your Future was a book I always had a passion to write after the experiences of my own children and the young people I have coached. It is aimed at people aged 13-14 and is a practical, step by step guide to all their options. Arts Review

& what’s going on - AUGUST 2015

Caro in Yorkshire (Yorkshire Sculpture Park)

Every now and then you make a discovery and at the end of June the DNweekeND was on in Doncaster – it’s a loosely structured arts festival, involving many local people, with lots of things going on all over the town, some seem quite random, others programed and organised. So I went to have tea with Wendy Cope (poet) at CAST, and an excellent tea we got there – Doncaster’s equivalent to Betty’s… and the small audience had a very pleasant time of it, poetry, chat, tea and cakes… what better? I then stumbled out into the bright June afternoon of Sir Nigel Gresley Square to find the Doncaster Youth Jazz orchestra playing. Oh Wow! They are wonderful! They needed an audience 10 times the size of we few, who sat and enjoyed their magnificent playing. What a treat! Then, Later that day in the grand Mansion House salon the Quirky Choir performed a concert including the ‘Making Music’ commission, themed on Doncaster Market, they had worked with composer Anna Braithwaite who had devised a really challenging piece of music for the choir. They were tremendous, a superb setting and wonderful fun event. The Quirky Choir is run by Janet Wood, at The Point – home of DArts - on Wednesdays from 6.45pm to 8.45pm. This concert will be broadcast via Radio 3 at some point in the Autumn. A couple of weeks later I discovered Doncaster’s Brewery & Tap on Young Street ( Waterdale). I was not the designated driver that evening, so I could do a little tasting, and have to report that it’s very nice beer they make there, and you can wander through the brewery as its just behind the bar! All sorts goes on there, Art classes happen and Morris dancers practice in the upstairs room, but what I went to was an evening of the spoken word and poetry. Well Spoken! This happens every second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm - 13th Aug the next oneand is an informal get together for writers to read their work, and it can get very lively. We had some excellent work put before us by writers aged from 20 to 94. And then there is a Writers’ Group which also is a Monthly event - check dates with the venue. It’s a support network/critical friend

to writers of all types. Bring a piece of poetry, prose or script to read and discuss. All very welcome. More information: m.jenkinson@blueyonder.co.uk http:// doncasterbrewery.co.uk/brewery-tap/ Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15. Exhibition: at Cusworth Hall until 20 September Toys Were Us!. We all have fond memories of our favourite childhood toys. Perhaps we have even lovingly hidden them away in a cupboard or drawer. This exhibition brings together some of the most iconic examples of toys within our collection from Victorian times to the present day. Maybe you will spot something you recognise –I have found a few from my childhood in there! Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery until 13 September Doncaster Art Club The annual display of work by members of the Doncaster Art Club is always one of our most popular exhibitions. This year’s exhibition includes paintings, drawings and sculptures in a variety of media, with many of the works being for sale Until 13 September Departing from Doncaster Celebrating Doncaster’s fine railway heritage, by bringing together an eclectic mix of railway artefacts and memorabilia from the Doncaster Museum Service and the Doncaster Grammar School Railway Collection. Many significant items will be on display for the first time, as we recognise the importance of Doncaster as the starting point for many a great railway journey. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: Scicluna Deli, just next to Doncaster Market - an exhibition of work from students at the HUB – Doncaster College www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 20 September Elements of Architecture: Corridors and Welbeck Tunnels. This is a rare chance to see the part of Rem Koolhaas’ exhibition Elements of Architecture which was influenced by the Welbeck Estate. The exhibition focusses on the ‘Corridor’ display from Elements of Architecture, and explores the vast underground ballroom and tunnels at Welbeck. They were built by the 5th Duke of Portland in the 19th century, and the exhibition presents theories about this mythologized architecture through film and hotography. Elements of Architecture was originally exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014. www.harleygallery.co.uk

School Holidays are here! Six weeks holidays have finally arrived! I can almost hear the shouts from all the children. For all the parents/grandparents/ carers out there in “Cuppa Land”, 6 weeks may seem an eternity. By the time you get this, you might already be hearing groans of “I don’t have nought to do” or my favourite, “I’m bored!”. We’ll get to that in a minute. But first ...

into the summer time activities for young folks, just not in the way we might think of straight away. Are you ready? Hehe. :)

One person said they don’t do “pocket money for chores round the house”. Their point was children/young people I am sure there are many different should have age-appropriate views on chores, pocket money responsibilities because they are and responsibilities for children part of the household, regardless & young people. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake It has been a very busy month, dealing with all the different things that the position of Councillor requires. I have provided an update on a few of these as well as letting you know about developments in the village. Parking problems

Community Involvement

The parking problems around the police station and impacting on surrounding roads was something that I have been pleased to see sorted this month. After being contacted by residents I met with the Inspector who said he had a solution that would take a couple of weeks to put in place. When I went back to residents they said the situation was improved and they were pleased with the action that had been taken. We are going to monitor the situation though so do let me know if you are still having problems

A big thank you to Radburn TARA members, for taking me round the estate – showing me the good backs and the ones that are part of the planned 5 year improvement programme. We saw things that are DMBCs responsibility and could be improved which I am getting sorted and I look forward to assisting the group to carry on with the fantastic work they have done up to now in making sure the improvements happen as promised. Clive and I attended the Central TARA as well - thank you to their members, and heard from First Buses about their proposals and we are going to have a meeting with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to find out what is going to be happening with buses for the next stage of FARRS. The Fun Palace part of Rightupourstreet was really good and was very different to what has been seen before. I attended Rossington Youth Club for their meeting – a chance for young people to tell DMBC and councillors what they think needs improving. The young people had lots of ideas and things that I can help get sorted for them. I will be there every month to see how things are going and make sure that Councillors are available for young and old. Younger still, I attended the Family Fun Day at the Children’s Centre – a great morning of lots of different fun things for families to do. They have a really good Summer Holiday programme – if you have not been in before, the staff are really friendly and want as many families as possible to use their facilities which are very good. Other mums I talked to said they had tried other Children’s Centres but this was the best one that they had been to.

Level Crossing Update Network Rail staff have been visiting residents who were directly affected by the proposals. The letter sent to residents informed them that Network Rail were no longer going ahead with level crossing closure programme and instead would be looking at each of the crossings in turn. This though won’t be happening until 2019 onwards so for now there will be no change to the level crossing. This is not a local decision but a national one for Network Rail who have had to stop a number of planned improvements. Some residents feel that this still gives some uncertainty which affects their ability to move which needs to be addressed.

Proposed 20mph advisory limit at Pheasant Bank To ensure our children are safer DMBC is reviewing all speed limits outside schools. There are plans to have an advisory reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on West End Lane and Grange Lane. This reduction would be in operation when the flashing amber lights are lit (before and after school). The process for this happening has now started with the necessary Traffic Regulation Order being produced – this legal process can take up to a year, but the Highways Department have said that they hope to have it in place by March 2016. If you have any questions about this or have a view on it, please let me know.

Inland Port Clive and I had a meeting with DMBC to discuss money that will come into the ward once the Inland Port is built. The money for training will come in 3 separate amounts, with the first amount being available once building starts properly. The money will mean that Rossington people will benefit from the jobs that are being created, by being able to access training (if needed) in preparation for the jobs being advertised. Miners Welfare will be where the training academy is located. A definite start date isn’t available yet but your ward councillors will keep you informed. 10

Back Pain – Physiotherapy can help. A recent survey of 1000 people with back pain aged 25-65, found that more than a third thought bed rest was the best remedy. In fact the opposite is true! Exercise such as swimming or Pilates can help with muscle & joint pain and your Physiotherapist will advise you on the right sort of exercises to help reduce your pain and stop it from returning. Back pain is a ‘Musculoskeletal disorder’ (MSD) which also includes neck pain and repetitive strain injury. One of the main causes of people being off sick from work, MSDs are effectively treated with Physiotherapy, with one study showing that 80% of people who had physiotherapy for their MSD were able to carry on working without going off sick Many people mistakenly believe that you always needed a GP referral to see a Physiotherapist, which isn’t the case. If you are suffering with back pain, the quicker you can get to see a physiotherapist the better, so a speedy self referral is key, as NHS waiting times are usually very long! A Physiotherapist will first check if you have any serious health problems that could be connected to your back pain. They will then find the cause of your pain & look at ways to help prevent further problems, using effective methods such as manual treatments and acupuncture, an appropriate exercise plan and pain relief.

Tickhill and District Lions Club A busy Summer for Tickhill and District Lions with 3 Galas and a Summer Bash to report. On Friday 26th June The Scarbrough Arms hosted our first Summer Bash in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Live music from The Sixties Mix Band and a Fish and Chip supper were enjoyed by everyone and the event was a great success. The Treasurer is totting up the figures and we will report the donation to the Cancer Detection Trust next month. We hope this is the first of an annual event in the Lions calendar. We attended Bawtry and Wadworth Galas earlier in June and then the Tickhill Gala at the beginning of July. It’s great to see so many people attending these local events and the weather at Tickhill contributed to a record sell out of strawberries and cream! Feedback from many people is that it was the best gala they had seen for many years. Thanks to everyone who supported us at all the events. For the 35th year running the Lions of District 105C are proud to be organising their Annual Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled on Saturday 8th August 2015. It takes place at Sandall Park Doncaster ·Opening by Doncaster’s Civic Mayor Cllr Paul Wray @ 11.30am. Entertainment music & PA throughout the day from DJ Lion Chris & DJ Legs, Tony Lister (George Formby) - 1pm, Lisa Tetley’s School of Dance - 2pm, Take a Bow – 2.45pm, Presentations – 3 30pm. Let’s hope the sun shines on all the events this summer. T

A Life Changed Through a Life Shared Denis and Linda Birkin from Conisbrough are Carers supporting a young man named Ben, who is on the autistic spectrum, through the provision of a pioneering service called Shared Lives. The couple, who also have children of their own, have looked after Ben within their home since he was a baby – providing foster care up to the age of 18, following which they wanted to ensure Ben could remain in the family environment they had created for him. To do this Denis and Linda became Shared Lives Carers, under a scheme delivered by Doncaster charity The Avalon Group. Shared Lives offers adults with a wide range of disabilities and mental health issues the chance to become part of an extended family by living in the home of a trained carer. For those participating in the scheme this can be either on a long or short term basis, with options for day breaks and respite relief. For Ben it means the ability to live a fulfilled life surrounded by all the things he loves and all the things he needs. Even the detached bungalow in which the family lives, was purchased to allow Ben to play music and sing as loud as he likes! He is also a valued, active member of the community, playing drums and singing at his local church alongside Denis who plays trumpet and Linda who plays guitar, and has a great passion for baking and art.

This is made possible by a life lived alongside people who care for him in the same way any family would. Denis and Linda have provided a home and a level of support that means he has flourished in ways which a residential care setting may not have been able to achieve. The Birkins were recognised for their level of care at the Pride of Doncaster Awards 2014, receiving the ‘Carers of the Year’ trophy. “The Avalon Group have been a really great help to us, delivering excellent quality training with commitment and dedication. Shared Lives really has to be the way forward.” said Denis The Avalon Group are currently looking to recruit new Shared Lives Carers throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas. Grange Lane Infant Academy An improving Rossington school has been rated as ‘good’ in its first Ofsted inspection since it converted to become an academy. Inspectors who visited Grange Lane Infant Academy, Rossington, rated the school as good across the board but flagged up attendance at the school as below average. The report, by a team led by inspector Lindsay Hall, said school leaders had an accurate understanding of the school’s strengths and what needed to be improved. Ms Hall said: “The headteacher is clearly focused on improving the school’s effectiveness and has raised expectations across the school. “This has led to a marked rise in the quality of teaching and pupils’ achievement. Children in the early years make a good start and develop a love of learning through interesting activities that help them to learn effectively, both in the classroom and outdoors. Teachers use high quality questioning to reinforce pupils’ learning and to develop language and vocabulary. Standards were rising because leaders ensured activities catered for the needs of all pupils, including those who found learning difficult and those who are disadvantaged.

Parents who the inspectors spoke to expressed very positive views of the school. They spoke warmly to an inspector of the good care and support pupils receive. The whole-school environment is calm and very well maintained, said the report. There are high quality displays of pupils’ work throughout the school. Everyone takes a pride in their surroundings. Pupils feel safe and secure in school and parents are confident their children are well looked after. Mrs Chappell, Principal of Grange Lane Infant Academy said this positive report is a testament to the strong partnership which exists between Grange Lane and the school community. It is evidence of the excellent teamwork that is in place in the academy and the hard work of parents, staff, governors and of course the children. With the support of the School Partnership Trust Academy chain, Grange Lane will continue to develop and thrive as a successful and supportive academy. T

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Allotments make a comeback! During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy! There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge. Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses. And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the

supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of food-related concerns seems to be growing exponentially. In the absence of clear leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food. Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that. Price and availability varies around the country. In many areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. Registering your interest may help to encourage the search for more suitable areas – perhaps you could suggest areas to your local council? If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits! Useful Website http://www.nsalg.org.uk/

The Ark Community Cafe Wednesday 29th July 2015 Join us at The Ark Café to celebrate Yorkshire Day Our Yorkshire Afternoon Tea is only £8.00pp To include: Wensleydale Cheese, Yorkshire Ham sandwiches Yorkshire curd tarts, Yorkshire strawberry tarts, scones And Yorkshire Tea

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, August is a month of harvests. In my local dialect, the month of August is called ‘Dzifuu”. It is translated as ‘too much to eat’. To some of us, we have too much to eat and indulge in. Just about a month ago, I picked up a news item that a supermarket chain has now decided to donate food to charity everyday in order to cut down waste. It was reported that a charity would pick up the items free of charge and turn them into meals for those in need. This company was working under pressure in order to feed the hungry in our society. However, it is also reported that almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. More than half of this is food and drink, which could be eaten. The irony of this issue is that not everybody has enough to eat or drink. Moses, a leader of the Jews, is reported to have instructed God’s people regarding looking after the poor. ‘“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you...”’ (Leviticus 23: 22) (New International Version). Poor people are always with us whilst we throw away good food and drink. Unfortunately, some of us have reasons for not helping them. Some of the reasons are that poor people are lazy, scroungers, wasteful, cannot manage their resources or would

Curry Night Friday August 21st Join us for Indian style starters, a variety of curries, rice and naan bread. Ending with Indian desserts £8.00 pp not use the help given them appropriately. Moses’ instruction however, did not ask us to find a reason not to help the poor. We are to make sure that they are catered for because it can be you, a friend or a relation next time. I wonder what steps we can take to reduce waste in our homes and use the excesses we have to help the poor amongst us. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to readers to consider making our communities ‘poverty free’ without depending on agencies, which have their resources being cut to the core. It is my belief that if each one of us gives some help to the poor, their conditions will change for the better. We don’t need hundreds of pounds to do so. There is another adage in my language, which says, ‘little drops of water makes a mighty ocean’. Just give it a try and put a smile on a poor person’s face. Have a blessed month.

The Real Junk Food Project hits Doncaster! Doncaster now has its very own Junk Food Project. A small group of people have been nurturing and growing an idea in Doncaster since February which has now taken shape and root as The Real Junk Food Project Doncaster. Doncaster has joined the list of growing projects which began in Yorkshire in 2013 and have quickly spread with projects in France, Australia, South Africa, and Germany. The idea is to encourage thought about food production and distribution, and specifically, food waste. It’s about sharing resources fairly, with the ultimate aim of abolishing food waste altogether. So far Real Junk Food Projects have - Saved 108 tonnes of rescued food - Fed 58,000 people (most notably with no adverse effects) - Received £102,000 in ‘Pay As You Feel’ donations. Pay As You Feel means everyone is treated equally whatever their circumstances. People are encouraged to pay for our meals with skills, time and energy. Fiona Cahill has been leading Doncaster’s project, rescuing food that would otherwise be wasted from local businesses and homes and serves it as tasty quality meals on a ‘Pay As You Feel’ basis. The project uses the kitchen at the Hallcross pub, donated for use by the landlord. The local authority has granted The Real Junk Food Project Doncaster a “5” food hygiene rating. Volunteers wanted We have people cooking, serving tables and washing up, and we need more to fill slots to be able to operate on regular days. We need: Drivers and people with them to help intercept food waste and any usable food you would be 36

throwing away yourself from a business, however large or small, or from your home. We need to source and fund a van. We are looking out for people who are determined and energetic, as we move at a very fast pace, and can think creatively. With available skills we can plan rotas/fill slots to operate regular days and expand much more following the good start! We hope to be able to provide food hygiene training to a level 2 and we can record hours as volunteer hours and provide references if needed. Food Aware have existed in the area for 12 years rescuing food passed its best before and we are pleased to have them in Doncaster and to work alongside them, we seek like-minded people to work with, and are also a part of a local food forum with other community projects and Doncaster food banks working together to hopefully develop actions. Doncaster’s Unbloq have donated us a website http://www.therealjunkfoodprojectdoncaster. co.uk. The Doncaster branch of the GMB union has sponsored us £250 to help with start-up expenses.

August 2015 News

‘Flamborough Frolics’ 12th July 2015 will be a date that lives long in the club’s memory, taking its place alongside the two (to date) Coast to Coast rides and the 24hr LEJOG challenge for Children In Need a couple of years back in the club’s recent history. At 5.45am that morning 24 riders embarked on a charity ride in aid of Brain Tumour Research, destination Flamborough Head – and then back, a total of 175 miles and an expected 11 hours of riding! All riders reported present and correct, bright-eyed and eager for the setoff. The support van kindly provided by Hudson Cycles and manned by Paul Foster, Tony Hickey and Shaun O’Neil full to brimming with snacks and equipment to cover all eventualities and cameras to record the days events for others. The outward journey was a breeze, literally with a 15mph SW wind carrying us the 42 miles to our first stop at Hayton near Pocklington at the foot of The Wolds. After a brief get together and drink top-up we continued through the now rolling terrain bound for the coast. The average pace continued to be high (as we had planned for) with the wind at our backs and by 11.20am we were flying down the coast road and onto Flamborough Head to be greeted by supporters, friends and family that had made the journey to offer support. 88 miles covered in 5 hours or so, 18mph average speed. After an hours stop, beans on toast and milkshakes aplenty and a few photo’s we were back in the saddle for the anticipated tougher return leg. The wind was still up and blowing directly from the direction of Rossington and so in the heat of the day and with hills to climb to get back over The Wolds the 30 mile leg to Driffield was the toughest of the trip but the group stayed together to utilise its powers and share the workload at the front, with us weaker riders tucked

in the shelter at the back. It was a tough couple of hours but by 4.00pm we were on the run in to Humber Bridge and the 130 mile ¾ distance point. After a final ice cream stop at the bridge we were on the way for the final ¼ of the epic ride, still riding into a headwind but with the knowledge that once over the bump at Flixborough the run home through Epworth was as good as pan flat. With weary but determined legs these final 45 miles were ticked off to maintain a good speed across the whole journey and the full group dismounted at St Michaels at 7.45pm to the cheers of a gathered crowd, 178 miles had been covered at an overall average speed of 16.5mph! Thanks for support on the day go to the three lads that manned the support vehicle, Hudson Cycles, Continental Tyres and High Five Nutrition for their equipment support and to everyone involved in the planning and execution of a fantastic day for the riders and the club as a whole, but not forgetting the main purpose of the ride being the raising of funds where we are hoping to now raise £5,500 in order to fund two full days of Brain Tumour Research. Donations to the cause can still be made via www. justgiving.com/wheelers-flamborough/ where the current online total raised is £4,700!!! The time of writing is the day after the event and so many cash sponsorships are not yet included in that total, a full total will follow next month. Thanks for your support on behalf of the Rossington Wheelers
