NEED A HOLIDAY?
Welcome to the
December 2018 edition
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try and keep it all the year” Charles Dickens The December magazine already and the last magazine of 2018. I am no more organised than I have been in previous years, if anything I am less so this year. But I am sure that as always, everything essential will eventually get done. I am looking forward to relaxing for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I know that I am very lucky to be able to do this. There will be a great many people working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services.
With over 25 years experience in the Travel Industry, I offer compe ve prices whilst giving you a personal outstanding service. From Tailor-Made Worldwide Holidays to Cruising Holidays, Package Holidays, Rail Holidays, City Breaks, UK Breaks, Flight only, Accommoda on only, Coach Tours, & much more All holidays are ATOL protected to ensure peace of mind.
ABTA No. C9813
Your Local Independent Travel Agent
The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue, as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2019!
Best wishes,

Beechwood Veterinary Hospital Christmas present appeal. Following the success of our Christmas appeal last year we will again be supporting the charity % )ULHQG GXULQJ WKH IHVWLYH SHULRG b :H KRSH WR EH able to make many more people smile this year. In Doncaster there are over 16,000 elderly people living alone. Many will have little if any contact with family or friends and feel isolated. B:Friend Doncaster is a charity that arranges for volunteers to visit around 40 older neighbours in the Doncaster area, with an additional 40 older people attending group sessions each week. Volunteers will visit for a cup of tea and a chat or accompany someone for a walk around the park or to the local cafĂŠ. Over the Christmas period these feelings of isolation and loneliness can be even harder to cope with. Beechwood will be giving presents to B:Friend for their volunteers to give to the people they visit and we would ask for your support by donating VPDOO JLIWV WR KHOS XV ZLWK RXU DSSHDO :H ZLOO ZUDS the gifts and pass them on to B:Friend. TOP TIPS FOR MINIMISING RUNNING INJURIES 1. Make sure you’ve got the right shoes for the job. 2. Get injuries treated. Even if your symptoms are resolving in line with the natural recovery process, there may still be movement dysfunction that needs to be addressed in order to prevent future problems. 3. Do other sports and exercise too – everything in moderation. 4. Regular sports massage can help keep muscles in tip top condition. 5. Mix up the surfaces you run on – this alters the stresses and strains your body experiences preventing overloading of one particular structure. 6. Yoga and Pilates can help create a good foundation of strength and ȵ H[LELOLW\ IURP ZKLFK WR WUDLQ 7. Don’t increase your mileage by more than 5% from one week to the next – this avoids a ‘too much too soon’ situation. 8. Allow your body some recovery time by avoiding running every single day – 4-5 times a week is enough. 9. Get a personalised training plan – we DOO KDYH GL HUHQW ERGLHV VR D ȆRQH VL]H ȴ WV DOOȇ WUDLQLQJ SURJUDPPH LV XQOLNHO\ to be right for most people (probably just the person who made it up!) 10. 5XQ RQ GL HUHQW VLGHV RI WKH URDG WR EDODQFH RXW WKH H HFWV RI WKH FDPEHU RI WKH URDG 11. These issues can then be addressed thus reducing the risk of injury.

Cause for a Cuppa “’Tis the season to be jolly” … so the song goes. Welcome back. A HUGE congrats to Paula for her continued success with Rossington Today as 2018 closes out. It seems that Christmas has become a far bigger subject of smiles, groans, GIFs on Facebook … and unfortunately stress. Who would have thought that the birth of a Child 2000 years ago (plenty of historical evidence for this) in the little town of Bethlehem (meaning “house of bread”) nestled in the obscure area we know as Israel could be the source of all this!? Let’s chat about the “stress” side for just a bit. Most of us FDQ UHODWH WR WKDW 0\ VWUHVV FRPHV LQ D VOLJKWO\ GL HUHQW way doing what I do … but I have to CONSTANTLY remind myself that if I’m doing too much to ENJOY it, then VRPHWKLQJȇV JRWWD FKDQJH &RXOG WKDW ȴ W \RXU VLWXDWLRQ" I mean, what’s the point of running from one event to the next without having time, energy or desire to stop and smell the mistletoe along the way? But let’s narrow it down even a bit more. As two of our kiddos are adults and one a 15 year old, the days of toys are gone (… well at least until the magical time of grandchildren and from what I hear .. you get to do all the nice bits and then when it becomes hard work, announce triumphantly “here ya go … let me know when he/she calms down”). How many times have people stressed over what to buy Sally or Kallum for Christmas. Then there are the arguments on how much to spend … the stress of overspending (Black Friday!) and credit card debt in January. Argh!! Our family went through the same dilemma. Me & the Mrs. don’t always see eye to eye on this. Three years ago we set up a separate sub account at our bank for the Christmas pot. That seems to work. But it is still very easy to go over the top. As we get caught up in the spirit of it all, the number of prezzies mount up … and the
appreciation level goes down. What has ALWAYS fascinated me was the number of times our children had as much, if not more, fun and play with the box than the item itself. I remember the spaceships, cars and 100’s of times of “Dad, can you pull me down the corridor”. Well, that got me thinking. One year I told myself … “Self, let’s do an experiment”. I went out and got a little hamper of felt tips, elastic bands, paper, cello tape, scissors, etc. They loved it! I know the advertisers are clever and they know how to target the children. Then they run to mum, dad, grandma, grandpa with wild ideas of what they absolutely must have. The frustrating bit is when the “absolutely must have” has about a week’s worth of play, it ends up in a pile in the corner of the lounge. I’ve been there. Recently I saw a number of postings on social media about this and a couple caught my attention. One was … “Jesus was given 3 gifts, why does Junior need 30?” Good point. I take it on board that one of them was gold which isn’t an option for me but the point is that whoever thought of buying loads of presents for the person whose birthday it ISN’T? One other post I saw was absolutely brilliant. The suggestion was 4 gifts: one they want, one they need, one to wear and one to read. It even rhymes! I realise doing that would be a tough sell. It might be too much of a leap this year for you but why not consider a journey towards that end? Do we consider getting things other than video games? How about things to build, things to read, things to learn about. They could be things that could open up a whole new world. ENJOY your Christmas. We would love to invite you to services throughout December as we consider Christmas. Thanks again for our visit! As always … the door is open and the kettle is on. Come on in!
How about 4 gifts? one they want, one they need, one to wear and one to read.

Traditional Chinese Medicine A Natural Way for Your Health What is Traditional Chinese Medicine? Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is complete medicine system that has been used to help diagnose, treat and prevent illnesses for more than 5,000 years. TCM is based on regulating the balance of yin and yang, harmonious with the earth and universe, with emphasis on self-body regulations. What is different between TCM and Western medicine? The difference between Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine is that TCM uses natural therapies including; acupuncture, massage, moxibustion, cupping therapy, and herbal remedies, while Western medicine uses prescription drugs and is more reactive, mainly because of the fundamental difference in the guiding ideology of medical theory, so that the treatment result is different. A true story: Lucy suffers from knee arthritis and obesity. She was told she need knee replacement, but she has to lose weight before surgery, or she would be left in a wheelchair. Lucy was frustrated because she couldn’t do any exercise to lose weight, with a pair of painful legs and she did not want to sit in a wheelchair for rest of her life, not to mention that her parents in their 90s are in need of her care. Through seeking solutions to her dilemma, she met a TCM doctor, who diagnosed that the cause of her arthritis was deficiency of energy of kidney and spleen, causing water and metabolites to accumulate in deep fascial and between muscle and tendons and connecting tissue around the joints. There was also blocked blood circulation, therefore inflammation formed easily. In fact, the symptom of joint 26 ROSSINGTON TODAY
pain and swelling were due to the spleen weaker kidney function, subsequently resulting in fatigue, insomnia, bloating, irregular bowel symptoms and so on. Lucy realised that the all of symptoms she had were previously being considered and treated separately, while in TCM she was treated as a whole and holistically. Lucy start her natural healthy journey with her TCM doctor. Immediately she noticed a reduction in pain, while her doctor worked to expel pathogenic cold and dampness deep inside of her body, strengthen spleen and kidney yang energy. She gradually started to feel better each day and with constant improvements, eventually her pain completely subsided. And the best surprise of all? She lost the weight! She went from a size 26 to a size 20, with the weight still dropping. The irony is that despite reaching the goal weight for knee replacement surgery, she now longer feels she needs it as she is free of pain and her flexibility has dramatically improved. Now, she can do her exercise, carry on her normal work, look after her parents and grandchildren and has a new lease of life. Lucy said that, “if I didn’t meet this good Chinese doctor, I would now be likely in a wheelchair and with a loss of mobility, with no use to my parents whatsoever. Thank God for letting me meet my Chinese medicine practitioner. She is my angel.” Suiyun Edwina Huang Harworth Acupuncture Practice TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

community Community Hello everyone, and welcome to the last write up of the year. We are all starting to think about Christmas and the joy it brings to so many people. However please give some thought to how much volunteer work people give to the Charities they support, whether it’s an animal Charity or many of the other Charities that need help. There are lots of kind people out there giving up all of their Christmas free time to help their nominated Charity. So, let’s do a big thank you to everyone. All of the dogs and cats in our care will receive the attention they deserve over Christmas and with the usual shoe box collections that we are so lucky to be part of our animals will have a super Christmas day. Our kennel assistants will be on hand over the Christmas period to make sure the dogs and cats have plenty of play time with their toys. Keep an eye on Facebook I am sure there will be lots of photos posted. Thank you to all of the girls and guys that work at Mayflower they do such a good job, you are all stars. We have street collections in Doncaster on the 1st and 22nd of December, we will be outside M & S, please come along and say hello. Don’t forget our Santa Paws at Bawtry light switch on this is a new event and will be so exciting. Just a few things to consider if you would like to either donate or contribute to our Sanctuary over the Christmas period. We are desperate for cash donations as we are struggling financially at the moment. We need to be here in the future for the families that are unable to take care of their dogs and cats, whether it’s people that fall on hard times, illness, elderly that have to leave their homes and are unable to take their beloved pets with them, there are many different reasons that people have to give their pets up for adoption. We also have a shopping list of things that you can pick up off the supermarket shelves, wash powder, washing up liquid, poo bags, hand wash and large black refuse bags. We will be grateful for any one of these items. We always need an abundance of towels and blankets in the winter months. Please don’t forget we have a super pet shop in our reception area at the Sanctuary, so if you’re looking for toys, beds, blankets etc. come along and have a browse. Last but not least we are trying to save a little dog that we have called Alice that was left at the side of a road to die. Please read the write up below. Many thanks to everyone that has supported us this year and continue to do so. Thanks to all the kennel and office staff you do a great job.
Help us Save Alice... She lay at the side of a busy road, she had given up and was waiting to die. She was eventually noticed by a kind person (not the Dog Catcher, thank goodness) who managed to catch her but she was still taken to a kill shelter. When we agreed to take Alice, she was Number 93, without a name and without hope, awaiting her fate like so many others. She was transferred to a safe pension, which came at a cost, and treatment was started for her skin and wellbeing. Alice is a mature dog, with only one eye - goodness knows how she lost it -but that doesn’t matter to us. We just want to give her a future that is safe and secure.
To save Alice, we need to raise funds to cover the following costs: £35 per day to keep her safe in the pension £100 to cover the cost of her treatment so far £20 for a 4DX test for heartworm etc £180 for her vaccinations (including Rabies), worming, micro-chipping and arranging her pet passport £200 for her transport to the UK and safety. Can you help us give Alice the life she deserves? Even a small donation will make such a difference If we all help, we will save a life............. Thanks a million
Happy Christmas and New Year. Best Wishes,
