“I I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Charles Dickens Christmas is nearly upon us again! I can’t believe that I am writing my December welcome already. At the time of writing there are still over 5 weeks until Christmas but, as I have barely started my preparations that doesn’t seem very long at all! Christmas week marks 10 years since I returned to Tickhill, having spent the previous 15 years living in a variety of different locations. It doesn’t seem possible that 10 years have passed so quickly, or that early in the New Year we will be marking the 10th anniversary of Today Publications. Over the last few months we have been running giveaways for tickets to see Peter Pan at Doncaster Racecourse. Sadly during November the decision was made to cancel the Pantomime which left us wondering what to offer our prize winners instead. The excellent news is that Doncaster Racecourse have agreed to offer family tickets to their Family Fun Day on 29th March instead. Thank you very much to Doncaster Racecourse, I am sure that our winners will enjoy this alternative day out. The January issues will be delivered to you late December; most people will receive them somewhere between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Tuesday 9th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas.

Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2015!

Best wishes, Paula x

Christmas is on the doorstep Can you believe Christmas is on the doorstep already? It just seemed we were talking about making memories over the summer! But be sure that this is the season that the halls need to be “decked”, bells need to be rung and the mistletoe needs to be hung. Though Christmas is meant to be a time of joy, I have enough miles logged on my clock to know that is not always the case. If you struggle during the holiday period due to the reminder of a tragedy in the past, would you be willing take a step of “faith” and do something for someone in need? I find it amazing that as we serve someone else, our own troubles often seem to fade a bit. Why not give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Christmas is the time for the annual nativities of every shape and size … infant school … on the big stage … telly and maybe even in the market. From a recent survey, it was found out how little high schoolers knew of the basics of the birth of Christ. Though many if not all would have played a part (or several) in a Christmas nativity. I have been wondering what it would be like if had a time machine so we could actually see the very first one play out in living and real colour?! The “wise men” or magi have always fascinated me. Who were they? There are all sorts of tradition that says where they may have come from and what their names were. We don’t even know how many there were! We do know there were 3 gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) but that is all the Bible says. Were they married? Did they have children? How long did the journey take? What would have motivated

them to make the trip of hundreds of miles over rough terrain knowing only of some sort of sign in the sky and prophecy from long ago? What kept them going? As wealthy men, they must have had servants and a caravan (not the sort on the seaside!) How big was the caravan? For you see, this was not some fairy tale. The birth of Christ, the prophecies are all based on historical reality. That’s the bit that got my attention. I had no desire to be involved in some airyfairy dribble. How about you? Would you be willing to invest some energy to see if there is anything REAL to this Jesus thing? I liked the little sign I saw once … “Wise men still seek Jesus”. Have a very Happy Christmas! As always, the door is always open and the kettle is on. Our office is just down from the Library and I would love to meet you. See you next month!

Rossington Parish Council The sales were even lower than last year.

We are currently looking at next year’s budget and unfortunately a couple of extraordinary payments have to be taken into account; the major one is the cost of next year’s election that we had to put aside £12,000 for the projected cost. 4 years ago it cost £10,500 so we are putting in an amount to allow for inflation. So, it is probable that the Precept will rise. We are trying to save money and although administration is increasing due to extra hours allowed for the staff, mainly to obtain grants and outside funding, but spending on Projects is due to be down partly due to the success of the Fireworks and the Beer Festival.

Please don’t forget Good Neighbours our ‘dine in’ and ‘meals on wheels’ service you can have a two course ‘home cooked’ meal at the Memorial Hall with activities before and after, and even a reading room with papers and magazines, or have the same meal delivered for an extra 25p. There are scones and buns, as well as sandwiches to take home available for a nominal sum. The Library is doing a roaring trade and is surpassing all expectations, but it does need more volunteer helpers. Full training will be given and you will find it a thoroughly satisfying pastime. Please contact the library on 734180 if you would like to help or call in and have a look around.

If anyone has any questions for the Parish Council please contact our Parish Clerk, Barry Chadwick holmescarr2013@gmail.com or his Assistant Anne Hammond anne.holmescarr2013@gmail.com or on either 734195 or 864731. Normal Public sessions will take place at Parish Council meeting, and any question put forward will be answered separately by either the Chairman, Councillor responsible, Chair of a Committee or Parish Clerk. Flippant, scurrilous, questions of a confidential financial nature or personal questions will not be allowed. Questions can be accepted by e-Mail, written or if short and to the point, verbally. The Bonfire and Fireworks display was a tremendous success with over 4,000 attending. The bonfire was smaller than normal because of health and safety issues, but the fireworks were something else, brilliant, tremendous, spectacular and every other term of high praise. The best yet and Fuse Fireworks delivered on their promise of ‘something special’. The other thing that pleases me, is that we showed a slight surplus, under budget by £1,750. If this is continued, then this will allow us to invest in an even better display next year and for years to come. Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Christmas Fayre because of the lack of progress on revamping the Market Place. We cannot take the risk that someone may be hurt. We are not putting on the Pantomime due to lack of demand, last year we only sold about 60 tickets for the evening show (at £1 for adults and 50p for kids over 5) out of 200 seats and it’s not the cost, but an empty auditorium does not help the atmosphere of enjoyment.

ROSSINGTON TODAY

We have had meeting of all the sub committees to discuss the budget, only the Strategy Committee failed to set a budget due to a lack of a quorum. The meeting is being rescheduled. The Planning Committee met with the main planning applications were Recycoal wanting 7 day a week working and the iPort putting in plans to make a start date more imminent. The Projects Committee met to finalize plans for the bonfire. The Parish Council met and had a discussion on attendance at the Remembrance Day parade, we had a briefing on a meeting with two consultants regarding writing the final stages of the Neighbourhood Plan and a report on a meeting with the owner of Great Heck brewery regarding the quality of the real ales at our beer festival, some of the beers were deemed too ‘hoppy’ and not at all popular. .

THESE FEET ARE MADE FOR WALKING Foot and ankle problems are highly prevalent with the sporting population perhaps being more vulnerable to such problems. In our clinic, foot problems are a factor in a great many of our runners but also in people who participate in any weight bearing exercise (including walking) and indeed those for whom standing is a large part of their occupation. The foundation for achieving good balance, stability and posture lies with the foot. Without these, we may be troubled by injuries such as low back pain, groin problems, knee pain or Achilles trouble or may experience poor performance. Many people spend a considerable amount of time choosing the ‘perfect’ pair of trainers and yet perhaps need to consider the foot itself. The sole of the foot is extremely sensitive to allow a constant stream of information to be relayed back to the nervous system so your body can make automatic adjustments necessary to maintain your body’s alignment. A common problem is where the foot is held in a rigid position during activity which impairs the feedback through the sole of the foot and balance and stability are diminished. Testing your feet… Remove your shoes and socks and stand on one leg. Is your whole foot rocking from side to side? Are your toes scrunched up? Are the tendons on the top of your foot noticeably raised? If you answered yes to any of these questions you would likely benefit from addressing the function of the foot. Physiotherapy can assess this more closely and work towards restoring a flexible and effective foot.

East Coast Main Line Level crossing closure feasibility study Network Rail is continuing its feasibility study to explore options to close level crossings on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) as part of our ongoing commitment to deliver a safer, more efficient and reliable railway. We are now consulting on our preferred options to close crossings and provide alternative access arrangements in your area. We would like to understand how the preferred solutions affect you and your community. Having received an excellent response to our first round of public consultation held in June and July 2014 we wish to thank the residents, businesses and other stakeholders who took part in that process. The information provided through the first round of consultation has been used to help select preferred options for each crossing and develop proposals to be presented during this second round of consultation.

The study

Key benefits

Level crossings are a road and rail issue. They cause delays to trains, pedestrians and road users.

Delays at level crossings lead to increased journey times for highway users, and users of footpaths and bridleways.

We have already taken steps to close or replace many level crossing across the network and improve people's understanding of the potential dangers.

By removing crossings we can help to improve the local economy by reducing delays and better connecting the community.

We are consulting stakeholders and working with local authorities to help us find solutions that benefit the railway and local communities.

Summer 2014 Initial options feasibility and Stage 1 consultation

What happens next? Subject to funding, a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) to close the level crossings and where appropriate provide an alternative solution, is expected to be submitted to the Secretary of State for Transport in 2015.

Autumn / Winter 2014

Our team will be available at the exhibitions to explain the preferred options and answer your questions.

Preferred Options: Rossington

Penny’s

It is proposed to close the existing ECML highway level crossing known as Rossington and route users onto a new highway bridge over the ECML. It is proposed to close the existing ECML footpath level crossing known as Penny's and route pedestrians via an existing bridge approximately 500 metres north of the level crossing.

THE STORY SACK PROJECT Soroptimist members get involved in many activities, often organised by the Programme Action Officer, Ann Jones. The Story Sack pictured shows the kind of resources prepared by members to support particular reading books. The members read the book and make the key characters in the book out of fabric and other materials. The children love the Story Sacks, they read along and play with the characters bringing the book to life.

Gold rush at Tornedale Infants

This increases the pleasure that children get from the book and makes it more memorable to them. We hope it helps improve their reading, but we haven’t measured that!

Caroline Flint joined pupils at Tornedale Infant School during October, and read out the achievements of pupils that won a golden brick for their good work or attitude in school.

If you would like to join in with the whole range of activities that the Doncaster Soroptimists do, please contact Carol Burton, out Membership Officer on 01302 368822. T

The MP also toured the school, but couldn’t resist joining Alexandra and Jamie on the climbing frame

Armstrong House Business Centre First Avenue, Finningley, Doncaster

Said Caroline: “Tornedale Infants had a good Ofsted, and everything I saw today echoed that glowing report. The children were amazing. I was regaled with tall stories of wobbly teeth, planets and alien underpants, complete with a drawing to match.

We are a Business Centre located on the Robin Hood Airport site. Originally used as a training facility for RAF Finningley, and built in 1991 is now one of the largest business centres on the site, housing well-known companies and some small independent business’s. Office suites available range from 160sq ft. to 700sq ft. Facilities include boardroom and conference suite, excellent free parking facilities, communal reception area, common room and 24 hour access. Methodist Minister Dear Friends, Christmas is a time of presents. Presents are given to friends, relations and sometimes to long lost friends and acquaintances. Most children get their wishes met at Christmas because some people believe that Christmas is all about the children. However, whether presents or children, we are reminded that Christmas is about someone’s birthday. Christians believe that the greatest present God gave to humankind is his son, Jesus. He was born on Christmas day to Mary and Joseph, a humble couple. Jesus lived with his parents in obedience and learned his father’s trade – carpentry. The bible says that he grew in stature and wisdom. Jesus grew up to become very powerful but he did not use his power to exploit people as some do. He used his power to heal, free those in prison of sin, and to tell the good news of God’s salvation to people. That was not the end of his story. Jesus died for the sins of the world. Furthermore, Christians believe that this Jesus rose from the dead three days after he died and he is in heaven praying for each one of us. I wonder if you would agree with me that it is important to celebrate the birthday of such a person. Hence, churches throughout the Doncaster borough and its environs have planned activities and invite them to join in celebrating the joy that come with the Christmas season. The churches’ activities include worship services, carol singing, party times, prayer times, and times of reflections. I wonder if you can consider this important invitation and participate in at least a few of these activities so as to enjoy the fun and blessings that come with the birth of Jesus. Hoping to see you. May God grant you peace. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. From the Methodist Minister,

Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T 22

DMBC Councillor

John Cooke Hello and Good wishes Rossington Residents, I thought you may be interested in how I am carrying out my duties and responsibilities on your behalf. Well I must say Doncaster Council has changed a lot since the last time I was serving as your Councillor. It would seem that the advent of computing and the paperless office have won the day and I am unsure that this is for the better? But we battle on and endeavour to adjust and learn the ins and outs of the new Council Structure and Methods. It is interesting and compelling. It is refreshing and satisfying to try to address the many enquires I have received and obtaining favourable results in most cases. Of course these cover many aspects of the Council such as Housing Problems, Environment Concerns, Highways Improvements, and other important issues relating to the Council. As I sit on Doncaster Council I have challenged and discussed the extent of cuts and restructuring of the Councils Organisation and voted against the closure of Residential Care Homes for the Elderly, the reduction of Day Care facilities and the overall diminishing of Staff and drastic cuts in services. These concerns and others I will continue fighting on your behalf. With better news, it was wonderful to see the success once again of the Bonfire and Firework Display. A very worthwhile village event by the Parish Council. It is pleasing to know that the First phase of the link road is on schedule and the funding for the second phase has been obtained. This second phase will hopefully expand Finningley‘s Enterprise Zone, with much needed employment and specialised Industry. With regard to new opportunities and investment, I am currently pursing individually and with the Council, many new opportunities for attracting 24

ROSSINGTON TODAY

new commerce, employment, businesses and infrastructure projects for Rossington and its Residents. Encouraging and promoting improvements in our existing highways, footpaths and everyday services. There is plenty to achieve for Rossington and I am discussing and taking as many viable possibilities as are available now and in the forthcoming future. The proposed closure of our Level-Crossing has some real advantages, but some very devastating repercussions for homeowners directly affected. This is quite a dilemma and whilst I appreciate the the necessity for a road bridge which benefits the majority of residents, it saddens me for those who will bear the personal cost. I hope and support these residents in their endeavours to reach an amicable solution with Network Rail. I would like to take this chance to encourage all residents to attend the forthcoming Network Rail public exhibition, Tuesday 2nd December, at the Memorial Hall between 2.00pm - 7.00pm or Saturday 6th December, at Holmescarr Centre, 10.00pm - 2.00pm This is very important to the village and an opportunity to put your views forward. In the New Year, I will be holding two surgeries a month, one on a Friday afternoon and one a Saturday lunchtime. Venues to be advertised shortly, in the meantime I can be contacted on 07767394367 or Email j.cooke44@yahoo.co.uk Wishing all residents A Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, With respect DMBC,

Cllr John Cooke

Rossington Councillor’s Update I’ll start this month’s missive with a warning passed on to me by a concerned resident; his phone bill for calls was about £3.50, but during the month he called 118118 to get the number for his old friends who he had lost contact with years (and years) ago. These three calls cost him about £27.00(!) and he didn’t get the number. So please beware, the cost to 118 118 is £1.88 per call plus £2.57 per minute, (minimum 60 seconds), so it quickly adds up. BT’s 118 500 costs 59p per call plus £2.39 per minute, or part thereof so watch out there too. It is even more expensive from a mobile so be even more vigilant. 118 811 costs 50p per call and BT’s 118 707 costs about 35p per call. Do not ask the operator to connect you on any service, the cost rocket again. There is another number 0800 118 3733 that is free, but there is an advert you have to listen to, it’s automated and you’re supposed to first register online on 118.com, so it can add you to its advertising database - though it often works without. So save money and don’t get caught out. Healthwatch England is the national consumer champion in health and care. We have significant statutory powers to ensure the voice of the consumer is strengthened and heard by those who commission, deliver and regulate health and care services. If you have a complaint about your healthcare please contact them. They are at the Holmescarr Centre, in person, one day each month, please see http://www. healthwatchdoncaster.org.uk/content/events or you can contact them on Free Helpline 0808 8010391, Email: info@healthwatchdoncaster.org.uk, Twitter: @ hwdoncaster or Facebook: Healthwatch Doncaster. Network Rail’s proposals should be out on the 2nd and 6th December, when their second and more publicised public consultation takes place. Although most people have heard about what is proposed from the residents of Station Road, who have, quite properly, already been consulted in person. Please attend these events and fill in the consultation forms, if there is only one option please complain about that and ask for a second option, I have already asked that you are given more than just one option. I’ll give him his due, like me, John Cooke is not in favour of the option that we were was shown, and I have said that the people should choose and

that I can live with either option, but I do not like their preferred option. The consultation is at the Memorial Hall on the 2nd December 2pm to 7pm, and Holmescarr on the 6th December 10am to 2pm. Please turn up and give your views. Doncaster Council has invested around £1m in creating a brand new outdoor market. The project has been financed by Government Local Economic Growth Initiative (LEGI) money which is ring-fenced to spend on economic growth. The project has been designed and built in-house, with new stalls commissioned from a local company in Doncaster. The new market features modern stalls, improved sight lines with a ‘grid’ structure similar to aisles in a supermarket. The new layout has improved lines of sight and access to the Wool Market. It’s a pity Rossington Market has not been refurbished! Do you have land that might be suitable to help regenerate Doncaster? Well the ‘call for sites’ deadline for our new Local Plan has been extended until 3rd December. Doncaster Council is asking local people to think about their land, and consider whether they are sitting on untapped potential. The Local Plan will look ahead for at least 15 years and set out what new development land we need to provide for the future of Doncaster and what areas should be protected. The council now needs to ask members of the public and landowners if they have sites which they would like to be considered for development. The Boundary Commission will have produced their final report on the future of the Ward Boundaries by the time that this is published and it is expected that our Ward will be Rossington and Bawtry Ward and will include Austerfield. This is very much bigger in terms of population (voters) and in area and will include the runway at Robin Hood Airport, but not the Buildings!

Garden View

Christmas past made present Long before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. 28

ROSSINGTON TODAY

At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible decorations would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter.

a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! Merry Christmas.

Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Next year we are taking 22 of the squad to South Africa to play and train with a number of Pro teams and Amateur teams and this is the culmination of ten years work, where the lads have raised all the money to be able to attend the tour without parents having to dip into their own pockets. At present 4 of our players are from Rossington, Luke Emery, Jack Cooke, Matthew and David Felters.

Invites you to

The Rossington Boys have been part of the team since 2006. The squad has been recruited from all over South Yorkshire but primarily from Doncaster. They are a diverse mix but we have seen how they have grown and bounded as young men. The Rossington 4 initially lacked skills and confidence but since taking up the sport their exam results have been very good, and they are now confident individuals who can succeed in anything they want to do.

The lads have carried out fundraising all over Doncaster including at Asda, Morrison’s and The Range and carry out car parking at Castle Park (the home of the Doncaster Knights). The Squad train Wednesdays and play on Sundays but have given up plenty of their own time to fundraise something I feel we do not see a lot of today. The plan once we reach South Africa is for the lads to play rugby however, this is also an educational tour were the boys will be carrying out Rugby coaching in the townships and will be presenting a junior SA squad with a kit. We will travel the length and breadth of South Africa helping the lads develop their rugby skills and also their life skills and gain experiences that will help them in their future lives. The reason why I’m writing is that our youth in Doncaster are not always portrayed well, but I’m very proud of how these young men have developed and how hard they have worked to get to South Africa and I thought maybe this article may encourage others in Rossington to take up sport and also show what a group of intelligent young men can do when they put their minds to it. I’m not looking for sponsorship but if any of the local business want to help we will be looking to sell sponsorship on our new tour shirts. But what I would hope is that this is an article of recognition to show how good our kids in Rossington are, and can be! Justin Emery T 34

CHANCE TO VOLUNTEER AT COMMUNITY VENUE Volunteers are in demand at a popular village venue to support learners, try their hand at gardening, support work in the classroom or help out in a community café. Anyone with time to spare can meet new people and gain practical skills and work experience to broaden their horizons, boost their confidence or impress employers if searching for a job. Rossington-based Holmescarr Ark and Crafts offers a host of opportunities all year round and people can try different roles to find out what suits them best. The not-for-profit business provides learning and recreation activities at its base at The Holmescarr Centre on Grange Lane. It runs weekday arts and craft sessions where classroom support is always welcome and also needs helpers for tasks such as garden maintenance and vegetable-growing plus food preparation and customer service in The Ark community café. We are currently seeking people aged 19+ of all abilities, including those with mild to moderate learning difficulties, are encouraged to get in touch or drop in to see what’s on offer. Training will be provided and one-to-one support sessions to support you in your role. Project manager Brian O’Sullivan explained: “People thoroughly enjoy the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at Holmescarr Ark and Crafts where they regularly make new friends and discover new interests. Several people have gone on to find jobs after gaining work experience here so volunteering is a positive experience for all sorts of reasons.”

A mid-way review of the Hornets season. The Hornets started pre-season with a new coach, renewed vigour and a new kit to boot, Pre-season games went the way of the Hornets and two solid victories were secured against Gainsborough All Blacks and local rivals Adwick. The season kicked off away at Thirsk and the Hornets thought they had been transported to the South Sea Islands with Thirsk fielding a half a team from Fiji island and the hornets were unable to maintain their pre-season form and were narrowly beaten. Next up was Hallamshire at the Welfare ground and the Hornets were down to their bare bones and had to call up players that hadn’t played since their colts days and were narrowly beaten, but credit had to go to guys that took the field with the number of players unavailable. A short trip to Wakefield had the Hornets presented with pre-season title favourites Stanley Rodillians and with the Referee making full use of his back pocket and injuries to three of the Rossington players, the Hornets were again short with a result of 25-10. Wibsey were next at the Welfare buoyed by a win in their previous game but Rossington with a full team and a home advantage were winners 17-3 with Tries from Lewis Wilson, Gavin Millward and Daniel Royle, the most satisfying part was not conceding a try. Hopefully by the time you read this the Hornets will have secured a few more victories and we will see you at the welfare for our next Home game against early season league leader Hessle on the 6th Of December - preceding the Hornets Christmas Comedy Night.

We always want more players old or new to the game please contact rossingtonhornets@yahoo.co.uk The Little Stingers again ran the Halloween night at the Welfare and feedback has been really positive with kids having a smile on their face and parents having a few minutes to relax this again is down to the continued efforts of Andy and Chrissie Brooks and his coaching team, they are always looking for more children to join the stingers where the goal is for the children to have a smile on their faces on a Sunday morning before they have the after training food, If you have children that want to be involved or if you want to help out with the Stingers please contact Andy on 07951298509 T
