Kitchen design – open plan v structured The kitchen has a purpose and functionality for cooking and preparing meals. However, over recent years the kitchen has become more of a social space to use for far more than cooking. The most popular option especially for newbuilds and home renovators is to create a kitchen come diner, often with space for a sofa too. So, this month’s article is centred around kitchen design and the pros and cons of having an open plan space. Some of the Pro’s of an open plan kitchen. If you have a busy home with children often you can all be sat in different rooms or it can be hard to keep the little ones entertained whilst you cook. An open plan style of kitchen diner allows you as a family to be together more by all being in one space. A great way to socialise and bring everyone together. You can be cooking and chatting to your guests who are at the dining table and still be part of the atmosphere and conversation. Open plan kitchen living allows you the space to live, work and entertain. Peter Lavery is best known for his seductive advertising photography, but for the last 50 years he has been photographing circus performers around Britain. All shot on a plate camera, the work is an impressive collection of circus subjects. These intimately detailed photographs expose moments of ordinariness in extraordinary lives. Lavery has had an enduring interest and passion for the subject since dropping in on a small indoor circus in his home town of Wakefield in 1968. The son of a Yorkshire miner, Lavery progressed via Leeds Art College to the Royal College of Art in London, where he studied photography. Before finishing his course there, he had already started travelling, and living rough, around the country in search of circuses. Circus Work is considered one of the most important examples of human and social documentation produced in Britain. This is

HABITS… The start of a new year typically sees many of us considering our habits – either ‘bad’ habits we’d like to give up or ‘good’ habits we’d like to adopt. Our bodies also develop habits (both static postures and dynamic movement patterns) and it’s wise to consider this from time to time. The most obvious postural habit is slouched sitting but take a look around and you’ll find many more. Many of us cross our legs when sitting in a chair and we often favour one leg over the other. Observe family members watching the television – usually people will sit in the same place (‘their seat’) which in turn dictates them sitting a certain way. In the office, work station ergonomics will affect the positions in which we find ourselves working. Dynamic movement patterns describe how we perform certain tasks. Upper limb tasks are dictated to some degree by having a dominant side but there are many everyday movements that don’t need to be performed the same way each time. Consider how you access cupboards, bend down, carry out low level household chores and work related activities. Why is this important? Favouring certain postures and using the same movement patterns can lead to an imbalance of stress and strain on the body and can result in different tissues and different areas of the body becoming fatigued/weak/overstretched/ tight/irritated/painful/stiff. If this happens, Physiotherapy treatment can help to restore pain free movement and function and redress any imbalances. However, prevention by varying how we use our bodies will minimise the risk of these problems arising.

We had a great deal given by the History Group when they closed down, and it has helped with our collection. We hope to be at the Museum in April with a stand to show some of this material and hoping to meet some of you to discuss any items that you may wish to have on the website. Whilst we have been focusing recently on items that are from the present and indicate the future, we will be offering material that represents our contribution to the Doncaster-wide commemoration of the end of the First World War. John, one of our members, has started running his group for Family History and members of the group have been bringing in what they have to show to the others, and to talk about how they have gone about gathering information, or how they can gather more about their ancestry, both in paper documents and on line. John has been helping them with his own knowledge and experience and they have been able to use computers to help with their searches. We have loaded up material given by villagers and will continue to do this as you offer up items for inclusion. Doncaster Rambler’s “A Whirl Across the Moors� or “Ramblers in the mist� You wouldn’t send a dog out in these conditions, although we saw a few, and some hardy highland cattle come to that, but we at Doncaster Ramblers are made of hardy stock. So with sub-zero temperature, visibilities less than 100m in parts, footpaths like an ice rink 24 of us set off from Whirlow Grange and were soon climbing up through Lady Canning’s Plantation with an ethereal mist swirling around the bare, frosted trees. The gothic feel made us glad we were not here alone. Thus a coffee stop in the open was welcomed and very much enhanced by Norman’s ice dance version of Bolero whilst delivering portions of his delicious birthday cake. After coffee and cake we were soon on open moorland leading to Upper Burbage Bridge and the gentle descent down to our lunch stop at the Fox Inn (or Longshaw NT Cafe). Try as we may there was little to see of the surrounding landscape, therefore a good reason to return here in summer!. Greenhouse Joy I am an impatient gardener. By February I am always eager to get started and my greenhouse means that I can do just that.

You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but I like to because it lets me get an early start in spring, and keeps my tender pot plants alive through the winter. When I had an unheated greenhouse my frost-tender plants rarely survived.

A greenhouse means that I don’t fear the weather, I can potter in my garden all year round and I can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and it’s well worth trying to incorporate one into your space.

I prefer electric heating, which doesn’t smell and doesn’t produce the excessive amounts RI ZDWHU YDSRXU DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK SDUDI¿ Q 0DNH VXUH \RX XVH D TXDOL¿ HG HOHFWULFLDQ DQG WKDW all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it very economical.

Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems.

At the other end of the year make sure you have ventilation, or your plants will cook. If you can afford it go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch.

Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy as big a greenhouse as you can accommodate because I guarantee that no matter how big it VHHPV DW ¿ UVW \RX ZLOO ¿ OO LW You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. I arrange my greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for my tomatoes to grow in, and I’ve attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so I can collect rainwater. It’s my little haven in February; where I plant seeds and imagine what my garden will look like in a three months’ time.

Hello Rossington Residents. We have had a relatively quiet month since our last update – mainly due to the Christmas break. We hosted one event at the Memorial Hall which was the Christmas Carol Concert in collaboration with Churches Together. What a lovely evening it was, the children from St Michaels School Band walked from school to perform a few Christmas songs, initially they were going to perform around the Christmas Tree in the Memorial Hall garden, but it was freezing so the children performed inside the Hall instead. It was a lovely event and the children did an excellent job. Rossington Parish Council would like to thank Churches Together for organising the event and the children and Mr Porter of St Michaels School Band. Well 2018 is going to be another eventful year for Rossington Parish Council our next event will be the Easter Eggstravaganza on 1st April at Brodsworth Pavilion, there will be a FREE Easter Bunny for all the Rossington children and lots of rides and stalls, there will be a BBQ as usual with all proceeds going to the local charity Rossington Good Neighbours. Look out for more information in the coming weeks.
