Welcome to

the FEBRUARY 2015 edition

Last time I wrote my introductionthere were still 2 weeks to go until Christmas, which now seems like months ago. I did of course, despite my concerns, manage to get done everything that needed to be done before Christmas. Much of my January seems to have been spent considering different kitchens, thinking about layouts, assessing different appliances and explaining our plans to various builders, electricians and kitchen designers. It is approaching 10 years since we moved into our current house, (which is the longest I have ever lived anywhere) and I have been thinking I would like a new kitchen for most of that time. Hopefully 2015 will be the year that I make that happen, but at my current rate of decision making, maybe not!

Understand? We have made it through the first of the harder winter months. Spring is coming. Hang in there! So pour yourself a fresh one, pull up a chair and let’s chat. Sometimes I struggle with things that are “hard to understand”. You know, “why is it” sorts of things. Why do the workers at the shop say “See ya later”? OK, if it is a village shop when that is a real possibility but if I am in York, at the seaside or wherever, it is the same. One of these times I’m gonna respond .. “when?” or “lunch on Tuesday ok with you!?” Isn’t it frustrating trying to find your lost glasses? You NEED your glasses in order to FIND your glasses! Also why is it that children born to the same parents, in the same home, eating the same food can be SO DIFFERENT. Why is it that things that fall apart come in

spurts and certainly not at times when you have a bit of dosh to get it sorted. Hmmm …

different from that to your husband/ wife which is different from that for a pet/football/hobby (well, hopefully).

I remember a bit in the Bible that was sort of like that. King Solomon was writing “… four things I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a young woman” (Proverbs 30:18-19). The first 3 are pretty amazing. Chase is interested in a snake and watching them move is … well .. HOW! The “way of a man with a young woman” is the one I wanted to touch on just a moment.

God’s love for us has a special word that you may have heard … “agape”. That is an English-ised word for the Greek word for self-less/committed/ active love. It is not the kind of love that says, “I will love you if you __ for me” (fill in the blank). If you want a description of what this love is, grab a Bible and check out 1 Corinthians 13. Though feelings are good, shockingly you will find what loves does … the actions of love.

This is not a “here’s how love/women work” bit. No way. But as February is Valentine’s Day month, I think “love” is a great subject to approach. Isn’t it interesting that Solomon put it in the category of things that are “hard to understand”. Would you agree with that? We don’t have room to discuss this at length but the Bible speaks of different kinds of love. Your love for your children/grandchildren is

Feelings are important but they go up and down. Isn’t that true? This kind of love is “other” orientated. I know what you are thinking. What if I am like this for my parter but nothing comes back? Then we need to wind the clock back a few months to “communication” … or you can pop in for a cuppa. As always, the door is open and the kettle is on. Have a great February and see you next month!

Rossington Councillor’s Update The Parish Council has formulated their reply Area Team Plans and it is mostly negative not liking large sections. But the current team have been working hard for the benefit of Rossington clearing up far too much fly tipping especially near the cemetery; 23 incidents in a month. They have organised our part in Get Doncaster Walking 2015 Rossington walk took place on 11 Jan ‘15 and was 10+ miles in length. We had the armed forces community Champion drop in sessions at the library. These were held on 9th of December. Attended by Royal British legion advice and support officer as well as DMBC Veterans champion Mark Hopson. The drop in attracted 4 veterans who needed advice on various issues ranging from post-traumatic stress disorder to issues with land lords. I hope this grows and we look after our military, past and present. Our officers assisted with the ARC Christmas fayre. This event attracted over 100 residents and was enjoyed by all. DMBC Community Safety Strategy was published with 3 Priorities: Protecting Vulnerable People, Reduce Crime, ASB and Re-offending and Reduce Substance and Alcohol Misuse and the Associated Effects on Crime. I hope that this has a positive effect on our society. Doncaster’s Energy Saving strategy involving DMBC staff assisting thousands of people to reduce their energy bills has been put forward as the best scheme to help people reduce their living costs. It really works, ring 736000 and ask for help. Three centuries of Doncaster history has gone on display at Museum. The ‘Delightful Donny’ exhibition at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery will feature works of art showcasing 300 years of local history, beginning with a stunning view of Sprotbrough Hall engraved in 1720. As well as historic views, there will be work showcasing contemporary views, including those of Doncaster Market and Rossington and Edlington collieries. Right up our street have plans for all next year following their successful sessions held at the market café on a Wednesday - reuse and revamp making Christmas related items and the clothing exchange attracting plenty of people. They plan a Phileas Fog February feast starting with a Thai starter at the Memorial Hall, Followed by Mexican at the market Café and finishing with a sweet at Holmescarr. There will be 10

ROSSINGTON TODAY

K a mini arts event at each venue. They will be having a ‘Rossington Fun Palace: Make Believe’ in early July at Holmescarr with all building users participating. This will be an ‘Everyone an Artist and Scientist’ theme. If you feel like entering the spirit of things please do. There also will be a ‘Handmade Parade’ with a theme of Halloween with community groups and schools joining in making costumes, props and floats in various workshops organized by Right up our Street. There have been proposed some Polling District Changes for next May’s election, with slight adjustments on where some people vote. Some will be moving to Tornedale from the Clay Flat Lane area, this puts both sides at Tornedale, to vote as it is nearer and the same with some people on Radburn Road and the adjacent area. They will be now voting at All Saints Academy (Sports Village). This will balance up the numbers in some of the voting districts as well as making the Polling Station Nearer. We had a Council Meeting that went on and on and on! There was not a lot on the agenda, most thing going through very easily, but in my opinion frivolous questions and petty politics from both the Tories and UKIP soaked up the time, nearly three hours for a meeting that should have been no longer than an hour! We made Bobbie Roberts a freeman of the borough. She has worked as a volunteer for forty or so year without pay, helping at the Deaf School and other places. We continued Local Council Tax Support, that helps people badly hit by the totally unfair bedroom tax and reduction in housing benefit. We put council officers on the Internal Drainage Boards to oversee spending public funds. And had a report on the Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee, so not an arduous or long agenda. Finally, the market, the never ending story! I have asked four times in the last two weeks for an update so that I let you know of the progress, if any I have had no answer. I can tell you that some electrician has visited the site, but that’s hearsay, I only found out from the Area Team, not from those that are supposed to answer. Friends of Cast It is over a year since the new multi-space performance venue opened in the centre of Doncaster. Cast, situated on Sir Nigel Gresley Square, has seen large audiences enjoy a wide and varied programme of music, theatre, dance and family entertainment. Anyone who was lucky enough to attend the recent pantomime will know what a welcoming place Cast is, great for families but also providing opportunities to attend high quality live performances for people of every age and interest. Cast is above all a friendly place. In recent weeks, a small group of regular audience members have been meeting with the idea of setting up a formal Friends Organisation to support Cast as it develops and simply enjoy being more involved with the venue. We would now like to invite people from across Doncaster and further afield to join with us and develop this idea further. If you’d like to join this new group, meet new friends or perhaps be involved in the organisation of this new group, we’d love to hear from you. Membership is open to anyone 18 or over and is free, although a small administrative charge will be required to pay for postage and administration. If you’d like to know more and how you can be a ‘Founder Friend’ contact me, Dave Adgar on 07733 108553 dadgar@thecct.org.uk T

A whole host of different fundraising activities and events are being planned for the year ahead to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston. The charity has to raise over £3m to provide its specialist support for children with life limiting and life shortening conditions, and their families – both in the hospice and in the community. The fundraising events provide something for everyone; whether you’re a runner, like cycling or would like to go to a ladies lunch. Bluebell Wood has reserved 100 discounted places for the brand new Yorkshire half marathon in Sheffield in April and the charity is gearing up to hold its first ever ‘Dambuster’ road cycle challenge event in June. You can join Bluebell Wood for a ladies lunch at the Sitwell Arms, Renishaw, in March or the whole family can embark on a treasure hunt at a cute Fairytale Trail in April. February is also Make a Will month. Bluebell Wood has partnered with seven solicitors, who during February when ‘Bluebell Wood’ is mentioned will give a donation to the charity. Details of solicitors can be found at www.bluebellwood.org/makeawill Bluebell Wood is also on the lookout for community volunteers, to help at events or with fundraising in their area. The friendly team are all focused upon helping to raise vital funds for the hospice in different and exiting ways. Volunteer fundraisers are matched to their roles and can completely tailor their hours around the time they are able to give. So, whether you have two hours spare or two days, our fundraisers would love to hear from you. For more details about events and our fundraising opportunities, visit www.bluebellwood.org or call the fundraising team on 01909 517365. T

Rossington Parish Council The consultation about the crossing is over, but no results have emerged as yet, so we don’t know what will be the preferred option. As far as I can see the village is well and truly split on this with some strongly against a road bridge and some strongly for a road bridge with most having a view and some not caring. The ones who feel strongly are those affected most by Network Rail’s need to close the crossing. Those living near or whose houses will be compulsory purchased against and those near or living on Clay Flat Lane and Bond Street for. Most of the shopkeepers also want a bridge as they see a lack of a bridge as yet another obstruction to business forcing people who live on the east of the crossing out of Rossington towards town.

Good Neighbours

The Christmas lights looked good, but suffered some damage with the gales at the beginning of January luckily we hire them and the company we hire them from also installs them. We hope to extend the lights to other areas of the village. We have put money in the budget for this and I would think that the planning for this will be going ahead soon. As will the planning for the Easter Eggstravaganza on Easter Sunday. Then of course, the planning for the mid-summer festival ‘The Party in the Park’ if we do call it that. Planning for our other events will start later in the year. The relatively simple things like booking the fireworks and the deciding on the Christmas decorations have to be done at about Easter.

Unfortunately the temporary closure of the market toilets has meant that Julie Gilsen-Lewis, who has served us for a great number of years has had to be let go. Thanks for all your service Julie.

is becoming worrying. Barry Chadwick our Parish Clerk has even read 7 different meters that Yorkshire Water has directed him to and none are ours. Where our meter is; is a mystery! We appear to be using water when we shouldn’t be using much at all. We also talked about financing the development of the new allotments on Grange Lane (Waddy Lane) opposite the cemetery and how Recycoal were going to build a car park and memorial gardens. I cannot thank Recycoal enough for their conscious effort to help and improve the village. We also had a presentation by Neil Firth, and excellent DMBC road planner, who said that the FARRRS link road will be finished in a year exactly 13th Jan 2016! He presented an excellent display of pictures from the building works and explained the difficulties in building this road with the number of bridges over two rail lines, one the east coast mainline and over the main drain and the river Torne several times. He also explained the legislative difficulties involved in building a bridge with reference to the crossing. This interested all present, but it resulted in an unusually long meeting.

GRASS ROOTS Don’t try to be too clever with your garden... I read this statement the other day that ‘Gardens are not just plants’ which got me thinking about the contribution that plants do bring to the garden. I’ve seen many different styles of garden in my time, from the ones that have just a single plant in them to those with thousands. So can you have a garden without plants? Although I know of no official description of a garden, I believe that plants are the defining element. A garden without plants, even just weeds, is incomplete and not seen as a garden in the eyes of the majority. A greatly illustrative and somewhat whacky example of this was seen in James May’s show garden at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show. James May, presenter of the BBC’s TV programme Top Gear, presented a full sized show garden made entirely of children’s modeling clay. It was very well done, with each plant, flower, rock, bench and even water feature crafted to its correct size, through accurate observation and careful construction, but no one, not even for one second, looked at it in the same way as the other, living, show gardens. What made this show garden even more interesting was watching the reaction of the people who were looking at it. It was quite clear from the majority of their body language that they had made their decision about whether it was a ‘real’ garden or not very quickly and at a sub conscious level. In fact the decision was made so fast that few realized that there was a decision to be made or that they had made it. All they knew was that this particular garden was just an amusing talking point with nothing in it that they could relate to.

as to what should be found in a garden. It is generally considered that these expectations of a garden are formed by and based on childhood experiences or surroundings but even though this makes the criteria of individuals vastly different, every single person expects to see plants in one form or another in a garden, regardless of what else is or is not there, because plants are a part of nearly every single type of outside environment on earth. The upshot of this is that you have a very specific criteria at a sub conscious level of what should be in your garden, which you must stick to if you want it to be enjoyable. Beware of buying that ‘novelty’ something if it doesn’t fit in with your sub conscious criteria and if that sounds like I’m stating the obvious, just think back to some of the purchases you’ve made in the past. This is an extract from Sally Tierney's new book ‘Your Enjoyable Garden - The 3 essential steps to start and keep a garden that is always enjoyable and beautiful’, available January 2015. Written by Sally Tierney MSGD BSc (Hons),. She specializes in making the most of the space in small to medium sized gardens through the use of good design and the right plants. She passionately believes that no garden should become a burden on its owners and so she goes to great lengths to design a garden that fits in with the client’s life style, not the other way round. You can see pictures of successful gardens on her website here www. yorkshiregardendesigner.co.uk

I think this reaction occurred because the elements of the modelled garden did not match up to the criteria that every single person has, at a sub conscious level, 20

Methodist Minister Dear Friends,

Many of us remember the month of February for the obvious reason of Valentine’s Day. It is the day that many people in the world celebrate love. Wonder how many of us really mean it when we tell people whom we know that we love them. There is a story of a young man who was speaking on the phone with his fiancé. As he was ending the conversation, he said to her, “I love you”. Then he concluded, “I’ll see you tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain”. I wonder what kind of love depends on the weather? There is another story (in the bible) of a young boy who gave his lunch of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes to Jesus and his disciples to be used to feed a multitude of people. This boy teaches us that love is all about sacrificing our most valuable resources (including time) for the benefit of others. The greatest example of love is our generous God who gave his only Son to the world in order to save it from sin (John 3: 16). He gave in order to restore the world and our relationship with him. God takes tiny things in our lives and multiply them for the benefit of others. As we reflect on ‘love’ in the month of February, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite people living in Tickhill and its environs to a session on ‘the love of God’ at Tickhill Methodist Church on Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February 2015, at 2.30 p.m. It is a form of gathering, which some people call “Messy Church”. The label describes what it is – messy. It involves games, art and craft, food and a talk. Anyone of any age and gender is welcome because every activity appeals to everybody. It’s basically having fun for a couple of hours with the family in a chapel every second Saturday of the month. I wonder if you can give it a try this month. Back to the issue of God’s love, a small gift can go a long way in God’s economy. No wonder Tesco has its motto, ‘every little helps’. I wonder if I can chip in to inform readers who live in Rossington and its environs that the Foodbank is opening a satellite centre at the Baptist Church at the Holmescarr Community Centre soon. Watch out for more information from your local news centres. This month, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to ask you to review your giving by giving generously to those who are in need of food and other resources. For those of you, who are also hungry for more of God in your life this year, be reminded that you can turn to Jesus who is the bread of live. He knows you already and is yearning to have a great relationship with you. Bring your stretching situation to him now for he is ready to listen. Happy Valentine’s Day greetings. My prayer for you, your family and friends is that this year, God’s blessings will abound in your lives. Yours’ sincerely, Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T

Rossington Foodbank In April Doncaster Foodbank will open a third centre in Rossington, inside the Holmescarr Community Centre on Grange Lane. Doncaster foodbank has been open since September 2013 and provides short term emergency food to people in crisis. Today in Doncaster there are families and individuals struggling to put food on the table. Doncaster foodbank is a Christian charity that has partnered with the Trussell Trust, whose experience and expertise in this area has led to over 400 foodbanks operating throughout the UK. All food given out by the foodbank is donated by generous members of the public. Local front line care professionals in Doncaster such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, Children’s Centres, schools, doctors, social workers and mental health teams refer people in crisis using a food voucher issued by the foodbank, to be exchanged at the foodbank for food supplies. Each person receives enough nutritionally balanced food for three days. In 2014, Doncaster foodbank has given 3 days food to over 4500 people, including 1400 children. Over 40,000 meals have been provided. Food is currently distributed at foodbank centres in Christ Church in the Town Centre and in Bentley but the opening of the Rossington foodbank will provide a much needed facility on this side of town. The foodbank makes time to chat and welcome with a cup of tea. We signpost clients to other services to help resolve the underlying cause of the problem. You can help the foodbank by donating in date and undamaged non-perishable food items such as breakfast cereals, tinned meat, rice, sugar, tinned fish, UHT milk, instant coffee, tinned rice pudding, fruit juice, tinned vegetables, pasta sauces and tinned fruit. The foodbank has adequate supplies of beans, soup, pasta and tinned tomatoes. There are a number of permanent collection points in supermarkets around Doncaster including at two Tesco stores in Balby and at Church View in the Town Centre. The foodbank also has a collection point in the Rossington Asda on Grange Lane. You can contact us at 01302 738629 or email us at info@ doncaster.foodbank.org.uk. You will find more information on the foodbank’s website http://doncaster.foodbank.org.uk/ and you can connect with Doncaster foodbank on Facebook. Please join with us so that those less fortunate don’t go hungry. Thank you. T

TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB We have enjoyed a busy and very successful Christmas period including more than two weeks of escorting Santa around the local area. With the weather in our favour large numbers of children and adults turned out to enjoy seeing Santa and chatting to him or one of his helpers. Many youngsters left letters advising him that they had been very good and telling him what they would like for Christmas. Our sincere thanks for the generous donations made by so many local residents and children. Many thanks also to the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Grand Jeep Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh round in fine style. Thanks are also due to the many local businesses which donated prizes for our Grand Christmas Draw held at the Carpenter’s Arms in Tickhill on Tuesday 16th December. In all there were 72 prizes in the draw. The willing support of local businesses means a lot to us all. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. Back in the Autumn we assisted a disabled student at Rossington All Saints School with his aim of progressing to national standard in table tennis. A grant of £500 has enabled Adam Gittings, who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, to travel to Slough, Harlow and Liverpool where he won Gold Silver and Bronze medals in the Slough Disability Grand Prix, two Golds in the BATTS Essex Disability Grand Prix and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Merseyside Disability Open. These performances have enhanced Adam’s ranking as the number one Class 11 Junior player in the country and number two Class 11 Senior player. Adam has been offered a place in September 2015 at the Bristol Table Tennis Academy where he would receive coaching from international players and coaches alongside his further education studying Sport and Exercise Science at HND level. He plays locally in Doncaster, Sheffield, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe and has tournaments coming up in the next couple of months in Southampton and Bristol. Adam’s parents continue to look for sponsorship to facilitate travel and accommodation for tournaments and can be contacted by email on gittingspaul@btinternet.com During December we made a donation of £700 to the Surestart Centre in Rossington to cover the cost of twenty hampers to assist local families over Christmas.
