Welcome to the

NEED A HOLIDAY?

January 2019 edition

And so, we welcome another year … 2019 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always, I planned to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, working late, missing things I wanted to attend and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, like all the best laid plans, as I write this with less than a fortnight to go, I have 5 magazines to finish, cards to write, shopping still to do and nothing at all is wrapped. Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation. The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th January. 2019 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. Wishing you a Peaceful 2019. Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Cause for a Cuppa Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa! I hope Christmas 2018 was great and I wish you every blessing in 2019. Two lads happened to have their birthday on the same day ‌ one from a poor family and one from a wealthy family. The rich lad walked into a room full of presents and after ripping into everything went ballistic because he didn’t get the latest Xbox game system. The poor lad opened up the door but VDZ QRWKLQJ EXW D Čľ RRU FRYHUHG LQ KRUVH SRR +RZ awful! He saw it, laughed with glee and dived in. His parents asked him what in the world he’s doing. He replied ‌ “with all this horse poo, there’s got to be a pony here somewhere!â€? It’s all about perspective. As we start out in 2019, what is your perspective? How do we envision our opportunities for this year? How thankful are we for what we have this year? What’s the point? Regardless of what ACTUALLY happens, HOW we face the events of 2019 will have a dramatic impact on every aspect of our lives. This past November, we had a short trip to Krakow, Poland. Ever since I visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. (USA) years ago, I have been impacted by those WWII events. I wanted to visit Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II (Birkenau), walk through the gate that states (translated) “Work makes you freeâ€?, see the blocks where the prisoners stayed, and be at the stage of ZKHUH RQH RI WKH PRVW KRUULČ´ F SHULRGV RI KLVWRU\ SOD\HG out. You would read that the fate of most of those taken would be the gas chambers. They would often be days on the trains, forced into a standing position with no food, water or toilet facilities. Upon arrival, they were promised they would see a “doctorâ€?. There would be the slight hope of medical attention, not realising that their fate would be sealed in D Č´ QJHU SRLQW WR WKH ULJKW JDV FKDPEHU RU OHIW (prison). As a young lad/lass ‌ if you want to be a joiner, electrician or beautician, training and apprenticeships are there. What an opportunity! Are serving people and those who are hurting your passion? There are any number of charities and positions for someone like you. What an opportunity! Reading through the book, meals were often described as watered down “soupâ€? with a piece of potato and a stale piece of bread. Some guards could be bribed to get more food, which might mean an extra bit of bread or meat. They would have a “mealâ€? in the early morning before going out to work and then in the evening. Aren’t we blessed? We can walk into any one of the village food shops and buy and ENTIRE loaf of bread for ÂŁ1 (or near enough). What do we moan about? We moan if our favourite bread is not available. We get upset if Shop “Aâ€? doesn’t have the kind of milk we want and have to be inconvenienced to go to another shop to get it. The goal isn’t guilt. It’s perspective. Would you be willing to join me this year to make 2019 the “Year of Perspectiveâ€?? I need it myself. It could help our peace and happiness index go through the roof? Thanks again for our visit and have a great New Year! As always ‌ the door is open and the kettle is on.

How do you use your time? Imagine an empty glass jar with a pile of rocks, a pile of pebbles & a pile of grit, all placed on a table by a University lecturer at the front of his curious class. The University lecturer demonstrates that only when he pours the large rocks in first, then medium-sized pebbles and finally small grit into the jar will they all fit inside. Tracey is no longer just “The Bag Lady” & is now living life to the max. Tracey joined the Rossington Slimming World group in May last year & hasn’t looked back since. After losing over 7st Tracey has a new-found confidence that she never knew existed & is now living life rather than watching it pass her by. For years Tracey has made excuses not to go out or do things with the rest of the family. All that changed this year when she went on a roller coaster for the 1st time. Tracey said that she always volunteered to look after the bags while all the others went on & enjoyed themselves. But not anymore, Tracey is the life & soul of the party & in group is fondly known as Minnie Mouse. Slimming world has changed her life, she loves attending on a Monday night & is a big part of the group always welcoming new members & helping out where needed. Tracey loves her Slimming World family & says she couldn’t have done as well as she has without the endless support from Julie & the other members, she now calls friends. Tracey joined last year to support her sister, she says “I knew I needed to lose weight but couldn’t see how this was going to be any different from other ‘diets’ that I had tried in the past. “ Seeing how bad things were in black & white though was the shock she needed to make the lifestyle changes & she soon saw the pounds dropping off and was racking up the awards without ever going hungry & making use of all the free & speed foods. Enjoying all her favourite dishes just adapting them to fit in with the plan. Her husband & family are extremely proud of her & are amazed at the energy she now has, enabling her to run up stairs and she no longer suffers with pains in her knees and back. Tracey’s only regret is that she didn’t join sooner.

New Year. New You? Join us at Slimming World. If you’re ready to try an eating plan you’ll love, with a support system that will blow you away, guiding you to a healthier happier future then join us at Slimming World. 2019 is our Golden Year!! Yes we’ve been on the go for 50 years. That’s 50 years backed by the latest scientific thinking & research by the best scientists with a deep understanding of what drives our behaviour around food & drink. You don’t stick around that long unless you know what you’re talking about

The 1st time I joined a group was 26 years ago & it’s the only plan that I’ve been able to stick to & adapt to whatever has happened in my life over the years. The food optimising plan fits around every situation whether you’re pregnant/a nursing mother/ diabetic or gluten intolerant. We also have a fantastic plan devised to help our young adults aged between 11-15 make the healthy choices & they come absolutely free as long as accompanied by a consenting paying adult. We also welcome male members whether they chose to come alone or with a partner (because we know healthy eating is not just for girls)

MONDAY Rossington Holmescarr Community Centre (Messy Church entrance) 9am, 11am 3pm, 5pm & 7pm Julie: 07710 548520

For more details on the Rossington sessions give me a call or drop me a text or just pop along to 1 of the groups, the kettle is always on & the welcome is always warm. I can’t wait to meet you Love n stuff

IN THE GARDEN

%(77(5 %('6 If you want an easier, tidier way to garden, look no further than a raised bed. Affording a gentler working position, fewer weeds and better soil, this is the perfect answer to many gardener’s woes.

No matter how good your current soil is, a raised bed will give you a miraculous improvement in soil quality, simply because you’ve increased the drainage which is critical to many popular garden plants. In addition, in colder climates, better drainage prevents the soil from staying cold for too long, so this will give you a faster start in the springtime. So not only will your plants thank you, but your body will too. Whether you are young or old, being able to tend to your plants without the back-breaking bending that often comes with it is a joy. You can throw out those pesky knee-cushions and simply rely on standing, or even a small stool if you feel the need to perch when you have a trickier weeding job. Raised beds have proved particularly welcome in our home where our mum is wheelchair bound. And on the plus side we have no more mowing to do in that area of the garden so it’s a win-win! Amusingly, our raised bed creation happened rather suddenly as a result of an accident. :H FDPH KRPH RQH VXPPHUV GD\ WR ¿ QG 0RWKHU sprawled in a herb bed, with her wheelchair on its side next to her. And consider the width of your planter too and how many sides you’ll be accessing it from you don’t want to make it so wide that you can’t actually reach one end. How you assemble the beds of course depends on your materials but as a rule of thumb, make sure you seat even the lowest beds at least 1-2 inches into the soil. This will secure the walls of your bed and prevent them from shifting. The taller you go, the more anchoring you will need. Have a go at including a small raised bed to start with and see how you get on. I’m sure you’ll soon be convinced they are the way to go and you’ll quickly want to convert everything to knee-height.

Rossington Parish Council

Hello Rossington Residents. I hope you all had a great Christmas. Can you believe it’s January again! Happy New Year! Let’s hope 2019 is a great year! RPC Facebook Page Follow us on our Facebook Page Rossington Parish Council Parish Council Pantomime The Parish Panto was “even better than last year if that’s possible”. Everyone who bought tickets turned up this time so the atmosphere was great. Talegate Theatre Company performing Sleeping Beauty excelled themselves and had the kids screaming with joy and the adults double over laughing. Just a few thank you’s. To Chris, Dot, Izzie, Jean and Gloria from Good Neighbours, Sue, Amy and Sarah, Ken Anne and Zoe who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Also, a huge thank you to Robert Hamilton who stepped in at the last minute to perform his Santa duties in Santa’s amazing grotto that was set up by the Smile Outreach group. We really could not have managed without you all. Tesco Bags of Help The Parish Council applied for a grant to Tesco Bags of Help to purchase a Christmas Tree for the village. Update from Councillors Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper

COMMUNITY

Your DMBC Councillors Bankwood Lane Most residents will be aware that the Planning application for the new road into the Bankwood industrial estate was approved by Doncaster Councils planning committee but that it had to go to the respective government department regarding the use of land designated as Green Belt. Approval has now been received from the Government so we understand that Attero are now making the necessary preparations to move progress on the new road. In addition to this it appears that an application has been received by DMBC from Attero for the use of the old factory site as a temporary lorry park while the new road is constructed. Given that this site has caused residents many problems over the last few years it should be appraised very carefully by DMBC before any decision is made. Let’s hope that positive progress is made on all aspects of this project in the new year. DHL Lorries through the village We have already met with the manager of the Common Lane facility 3 times over the last 12 months and a 4th meeting is scheduled during the week ending 16th December. This is to discuss what progress has been made internally by DHL to abate the nuisance they are causing. To date, despite assurances received from WKHP WKH YHKLFOHV XWLOLVLQJ WKHLU GHSRW FRQWLQXH WR À RXW WKH URXWLQJ DJUHHPHQW 7R UDLVH WKH SUR¿ OH RI WKLV LVVXH we will be arranging a number of public protests against the actions condoned by DHL. To this end, Mick would like to hear from anyone via email or telephone who would be willing to take part in a series of peaceful walks to register our displeasure, probably sometime early in 2019. Communal Halls Earlier this year, St Leger Homes announced that they were to undertake a review of the viability of the 3 Communal halls in Rossington. There was a feeling that the 2 halls on the Radburn Estate should to be combined. However, residents suitably expressed their concern that if this was to be the way forward, they would not be able to get there and that a large part of their social engagement would be lost. The good news now, is that all 3 halls are to remain open but steps do need to be taken to ensure that they are used more extensively. Any suggestions to St Leger on a possible GLYHUVL¿ FDWLRQ RI XVH ZRXOG EH PRVW ZHOFRPH Visit by Mayor Ros Jones and the Chief Executive Jo Miller to Rossington. Ros Jones and Jo Miller both took time out from their busy diary to visit Rossington Brick Pond to meet the volunteers who manage it and to view just how well this site is being run. It truly is a credit to all concerned and their input has safeguarded and ensured a positive future for a much loved Rossington asset. Jo and Ros

Destruction of Council owned grass verge areas. Sadly, the number of our residents who chose to run over and park on the villages grass areas is continuing unabated and this is to be the subject of possible legal recourse in terms of having the damage reversed. In the example of the Radburn Estate, residents are to receive a letter where appropriate from St Leger Homes reminding them of their responsibility to the local environment. That one little ‘trip’ over a grass verge area may not seem much to the offending drivers but add that up across the village and you begin to realise just how much pressure the green environment is under. All we ask is that drivers behave responsibly and avoid parking on or driving over green areas. Councillors Surgery and future Rossington Today topics Residents are reminded that the Radburn Tara meetings still take place on the second Wednesday of every month at 3pm at the Ragusa Hall Community Centre.
