Welcome to
with over 25 years experience
the JANUARY 2015 edition
And so we welcome another year … 2015 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. By the time you read this it will be the last few days of December or possibly just into January. As I write though it is still 2 weeks until Christmas and I am not really any more prepared for Christmas than I was when I wrote a month ago! Despite having far fewer Christmas commitments this year now that all my children are at secondary school and the days of nativity plays, school carol services and Christmas fairs are over, I seem to be just as busy as ever. I have spent some time during December making plans for 2015 and setting some goals both business and personal. Did you know that goals that are written down have a 95% higher chance of achieving the desired outcome, yet only 3%- 5% of the population have any written goals. It isn’t something I have ever really done before so I will let you know later in the year whether I am a convert! Despite all the planning I am still no further forward with deciding how to celebrate the 10th birthday of Today Publications which is quickly approaching! The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 16th January. Wishing you a Peaceful 2015.

Minister Dear Friends,
It’s New Year again and to some of us, it’s a time to reflect upon the past and look forward to the future. Sometimes, some of us find it difficult to know what we need to do to achieve the best in the coming year. I wonder if we can apply the advice the Apostle Paul gave to the Christians in Rome about 2000 years ago. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honouring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically (Romans 12: 6-9) (New Living Translation). Paul’s advice is that just be yourself and do the good things that you love doing. Sometimes, it may be difficult to do them but Christians believe that prayer helps us to ask for assistance from God. He hears us and helps us achieve what we need to do with his Spirit. You may wonder whether you have to pray for hours or days before God hears. Not at all! Christians believe that prayer is a conversation with God. So as part of being yourself, you can have a frequent conversation with God. It can be a few minutes or hours, depending on your availability. God is always waiting for you to show up. You may wonder whether he will answer. My response is, God’s answer may be “yes, I’ll give it to you now or later”. It may also be “no, it’s not right for you now”. It can be “wait for a while” or a final answer is “have you thought of this better alternative”? This year, as part of your resolution or determination to change things in life for the better, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider frequent conversations with God. He is waiting for you to show up. Have a blessed New Year.

Steve Jobs took risks Well, we have made it to 2015! What will the year bring? I do pray God’s best to each of you and your family. Before diving into a thought for this first month of the year, I wanted to briefly thank the following Rossington shops for being willing to host a sheep for our “Messy Nativity” ... ASDA, Butcher’s, Variety’s, Salvation Army, Fiona’s Flowers, Crumbs, Karen’s Sweet Shop, Post Office, Hudson Cycles and Colette’s custom embroidery clothing shop. As we are now on the doorstep of this brand new year, how are you looking at it? If you could describe your approach to this year in one word, what would it be? Same? Boring? Not bothered (yeah, I know, that’s 2 words)? Excited? How about if you try this one on for size ... risk. Now I’m NOT suggesting
doing anything illegal, immoral or dangerous (I mean silly dangerous). As I go around some of the schools, you will see signs listing character traits of “honesty, endurance, etc”. One of the ones that caught my eye was “risk”. I like that and I think it is an important word. If you think about it, very little has been done over the history of the world without an element of risk. In the last 5 years I have become an “Apple” guy. That may mean nothing to many. For some that may make me an enemy. Apple is a computer company that has brought us the iPhone, iPod, iPad, etc. Steve Jobs started the company many years ago and he was a colourful character. I would not say I agreed with everything about him BUT he was a risk taker and because of that he and Apple has impacted the world! Being a risk taker does have ... well, risks. A dream may fail. A goal may not be realised. Money may be lost. On a much smaller scale, we at
“Messy Church” often will try things we have never done before. People will ask ... will that work? My answer is often, “we don’t know until we know.” Sometimes things work a charm. Sometimes they don’t. One of my favourite Bible stories is the bit where Jesus walks on the water. The part that has always fascinated me was when Peter stepped out of the boat to meet Jesus on the water. Was there risk? Oh yeah, you better believe it! But because Peter was the only one willing to risk it, he is the only one in the history of the world able to tell the story of walking on water Have you been dreaming about something and fear has held you back? Could 2015 be your year to step out of the boat? Hmm, something to think about ... As always, the door is always open and the kettle is on. Our office is just down from the Library and I would love to meet you. See you next month!

Rossington Councillor’s Update There have been wide ranging proposed changes to the Neighbourhood teams that will affect service and they will be focussing on troubled families. Although I feel that this is necessary too much time is given to a few families and too little to the other 99.9%. This is not politically correct and certainly not what a few senior Council Officers think, so the thoughts of us poor Councillors are being ignored yet again. There may be some movement on the market place, but I’m assured that there will be no rushing, so I don’t know the timetable for the work or even what will be done for the £70,000 allocated to this project. However I have been told that coinciding with the fitting of new signalling gear an the crossing that will shut it for 9 days (!) part of West End Lane will be resurfaced. So that is unexpected good news. The budget cuts are enormous and we passed the budget put forward with great reluctance. However we are still £16M sort of our huge target for cuts and this may result in more redundancies. This Government has a lot to answer for, heartless, stomping on the poor and helping the rich. Democracy at its’ worst. The Communities and Environment Scrutiny Panel (C&E) met to discuss drugs especially so called ’legal highs’, new strains of powerful Cannabis and alcohol abuse and came up with some useful ideas that were passed on to other committees especially Licencing who have some powers over shops selling ‘legal highs’.
on stream it will reduce our landfill (and resultant landfill tax) from 60% to 5%, and that is really good news. Our recycling will go up, the anaerobic digester will produce gas to run a static electricity generator and the waste will be compacted into fuel bricks and then burnt at Ferrybridge to produce even more electricity. We had a Council Meeting to vote through the budget and discussed Public Health now it’s our responsibility. The mayor answered numerous questions on Care homes and libraries form the public and councillors and discussed a UKIP motion from one of their members about something that had happened a year before he got elected. Because this was to come up in a planning meeting, a quasi-judicial committee most of us thought that this was not right and should not be allowed, but it was forced through by officers who thought it didn’t affect those present. We also discussed a motion on recent comments by Government Minister Lord Freud at the Conservative Party conference when he said that: ‘You make a really good point about the disabled. There is a group where actually, as you say, they’re not worth the full wage.’ Which obviously was ridiculed and the minister lambasted. We had a motion on in view of the £109M cuts that central government to listen to the strength of public feeling and act to end the injustice of tax dodging by large multinational companies. We also objected to the plans to get rid of guards on the transPennine railway. It was at times a loud and vociferous meeting that, I think, enjoyed by all
Richard Cooper-Holmes Your Labour Councillor Tel: 01302 864668 or 07887 573109
C&E also met to discuss waste collection and disposal. The good news is that when the BDR (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham) project at Manvers comes 10

Yoga for later years?
you can learn how to stretch and increase your flexibility and strength without risk of injury.
Ever find aches and stiffness stop you from doing what you enjoy?
2: It’s about getting your foot behind your ear!
It is a fact that as we age our bodies tend to become more rigid and inflexible. Some people in their twenties can already find they suffer from stiff joints and back pain, as a result of their sedentary lifestyles. The loss of the capacity to move and bend with flexibility is the defining hallmark of old age. Of all the different types of exercise ever devised, yoga has shown itself as a system which can preserve our youthful suppleness and physical well-being AND our sense of emotional well-being better than any other.
3 common MYTHS about yoga: 1: It’s only for the young and fit Anyone, at any age can begin yoga. It’s about learning to listen to your body and gentle movement. With guidance from a good teacher
The primary aim of yoga is NOT flexibility, it is balance. You may have flexibility - but what you need is strength. You may have strength, but need flexibility. You may be stressed and need to be able to relax. You may have trouble staying motivated. You may suffer the effects of illness which takes you out of balance. What yoga does is challenge you wherever you need it - making you a more balanced person.
3: That it’s sitting cross legged chanting! Yoga is not a religion. Yes - it does have breathing and meditation techniques designed to help you relax and calm your mind, but its primary aim is to help you destress and unwind from the pressures of daily life. Learning how to include even a short 20 minute practice of yoga stretches into a regular routine can make a massive difference to the ageing process, helping you lose weight, de-stress, reduce stiffness or joint pain and help keep you fitter for longer, so you can get on with living the life you want to lead. ? Is your Physiotherapist really a Physiotherapist? If you are seeing a Physiotherapist then you are probably going to say yes. Sadly, not all of you will be correct. Since 2003, Physiotherapist has been a protected title. This means that anyone claiming to be a Physiotherapist or claiming to offer Physiotherapy treatment is required by law to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The HCPC is the UK’s independent health regulator. To register with the HCPC not only do you have to supply proof of your original Physiotherapy qualification (these days this is an honours degree), but also provide evidence of your continued professional development which justifies and proves you meet the minimum professional standards. The HCPC register is the register you would be ‘struck off’ from in the case of misconduct.
One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.
Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain
Claiming or implying you are a Physiotherapist when you are not registered with the HCPC is against the law and yet this continues to happen. The ONLY way to ensure you are safe and under the care of a qualified and registered Physiotherapist is to CHECK THE REGISTER. Before seeing any Physiotherapist please log on to the HCPC website at www.hcpc-uk.org.uk All you need is the Physiotherapists name and if they are registered then you will find their details come up. Alternatively, any Physiotherapist should be happy to provide you with their unique HCPC registration number which can then be verified at the same website. This simple step takes just a few minutes but it ensures your safety and prevents unqualified people practising in the name of Physiotherapy and tarnishing our profession.

New Year, New Home,
New Way
The New Year brings new hope for homeowners looking to make a fresh start and climb the property ladder, as resolutions and post-Christmas blues spur buyers to begin their property search early. Marketing property promptly in the New Year means owners can benefit from the ‘spring bounce’ when sales traditionally increase between March and May. This will be especially true in early 2015, according to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which demonstrate the strength of the market. Excluding London and the South East, UK house prices increased by 9.1 per cent in the 12 months to September 2014. Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, a family-run property business specialising in residential sales, comments: “Winter is typically seen as a bad time of year for the property market because of a number of factors - the weather’s bad, money is tight and people are preoccupied with Christmas preparations. Once Christmas is over and the January blues set in, people start thinking about the year ahead, making decisions and taking positive steps forward.
“Your home can actually be at its most inviting in the winter time and this can have a very positive and inspiring effect on potential buyers,â€? added Graeme. “There’s nothing better than stepping in from the cold to a warm and hospitable house. January and February are great times for people to market their property.â€? According to a recent study, buying or selling a house is viewed as the most stressful part of modern life - more stressful than bankruptcy, getting divorced or being made redundant. For this reason, a growing number of people are looking to auctions and other, less traditional channels to achieve a sale. Indeed, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135 per cent increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Competitive by nature, auctions can drive up the price of a property, are legally binding and require deposits to be paid on exchange. Around 75 per cent of properties sold at UK auctions are completed and exchanged within as little as four weeks, much quicker than the national average. In its first two years of business, Open Door Auctions has hosted 20 auctions and sold 250 homes – worth more than ÂŁ30million to local residents. For more information about the next property auction or to arrange a free property valuation, call the team at Open Door Auctions on 01777 712 614 or email help@opendoorauctions.co.uk
The New Year can provide an opportune time for people looking to sell property, as buyers kick-start their househunting in earnest.

Home-Start Doncaster
Home-Start Doncaster, a registered charity, has been helping parents to build better lives for their children for 30 years. The early years before children start school are vital in a child’s life. At Home-Start we believe parents play the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It’s just sometimes they need a bit of help!
Start home-visiting volunteer we would love to hear from you. We offer a highly regarded Preparation Course which is held one day a week over nine weeks. This will prepare you for home visiting, and give you a thorough understanding of the role of a Home-Start volunteer. Your work may be accredited at Level 2 if you wish.
Our home-visiting volunteers are committed, caring people who offer their time freely to support local families who have at least one child under the age of five. Volunteers are usually parents themselves, or have parenting experience, and bring with them personal experience and skills. They are friendly, approachable, reliable and can be trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental.
Once linked with a family you will visit them on a weekly basis for 2-3 hours providing support with a wide range of difficulties such as providing an extra pair of hands for parents with twins or being a friend to a single parent who feels isolated. You should be able to stay in the role for at least a year.

Rossington Parish Council place from its’ current dangerous state.
Well winter has finally arrived! Plans are going ahead for the next year and I hope that it will be enjoyed by all, much the same as this year, but with a few changes and even more improvements.
So next year looks good. All the committees met and agreed their own part of the budget and as previously written, passed unanimously by the Parish Council. The Planning Committee met to discuss plan put forward and all were passed with no observations except an application for 70 dwellings and associated infrastructure on the old colliery site (outline plans had previously been granted permission) it was resolved to note that the Planning Committee felt that due to the size and scale of this development it would be helpful for someone from Harworth Estates to be available to answer any questions raised by the committee. The Parish Clerk Barry Chadwick has asked then to come to a special meeting. We could also not that there were no affordable houses on the plans put forward, just 4 bedroom detached.
But one piece of new that is not wished for, the Parish Precept budget was voted through and due to a cut in a Government grant and the cost of the May election the precept is going up about 8p per week for a band D property. Obviously it will be less for a band A property and more for a Band H property. I am terribly sorry, but we did our best to cut costs, but some things are impossible. On the bright side, our Deputy Parish Clerk, Anne Hammond is getting grants in for the Memorial Hall, the Meals on Wheels Good Neighbours project that more than cover the cost of employing her. So if you want a good quality meal to eat in at the Memorial Hall or delivered freshly cooked and hot to your door please ring Anne on 864731. At the Memorial Hall on Wednesday and Thursday before and after the Meals on Wheels Good Neighbours there will be activities (not stressful or difficult) to keep you amused. This includes a reading room where you can read the papers or magazines and drink unlimited coffee or tea for 50p! Now the budget is settled I can let you know the proposed program for next year: starting with the Easter Eggstravaganza on Easter Sunday at Brodsworth Way Pavilion, then the big summer event the Party in the Park (name may change) on the Saturday after the Schools break up, then the village BBQ at Brodsworth Way Pavilion either Leger Saturday or the week before, next The Beer Festival on the Welfare on the first Friday and Saturday of October, and then the Bonfire and Firework display on Bonfire night at the Welfare, then it gets a bit wooly with the Panto in limbo due to lack of audience and the Xmas Fayre awaiting the repair of the Market 24

Garden View
Seeds of Change How many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet … as well as in our garden! Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the wind. It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer (presumably they had been stuck 26
to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next really was a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around 2 inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the artex ceiling!
enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors. Until next time, happy winter gardening.
I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening. It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years. To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have

The purpose of this project is to remove the disadvantage that some members of the armed forces whether they be regular, reserve or retired (retired being having been in receipt of 7 days pays) feel when applying for housing or accessing services. It also aims to sign post members of the community to any assistance they may need whether that be from the Royal British legion, SAFFAAs or the forces charities. As Part of the project a number of Armed forces community ‘drop ins’ have been set up. May I start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held on 16th December. To the companies who donated prizes, the many people who provided items for the draw, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets –thank you. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his new sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So, thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. T
