elcome to the July edition of ROSSINGTON TODAY. TODAY
I hope that you all enjoyed the various Jubilee celebrations. I was away on a family holiday in Suffolk so didn’t mange to attend anything locally, but I did enjoy the Southwold firework display, beacon lighting and Jubilee Fete! The abundance of flags and bunting everywhere I went also added to the holiday feeling and the general celebratory air. I hope that the weather not being particularly kind didn’t detract from your events. The next edition will be distributed to you from 27th July. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Wednesday 11th July.
Best Wishes, Paula

ossington Hornets
A quick update on how the Hornets are progressing toward the 2012-2013 season. We have started preseason training and player numbers are good but we are always on the lookout for new players of any ability to join the club. We will be playing league rugby in Yorkshire 5 again this year and with the experience of last year to build on we hope to be competitive and turn the welfare into a place where other teams hate to come! The Hornets held a race night on the 2nd of June and with the help of the following local businesses were able to raise nearly £600 towards our running costs for next year. A big thanks to: The Barbers Shop B J Butchers The Co-Operative Fyshcreative Photography Green Fayre High Voltage McColls Mechantech Pizza Jim’s The Poacher Rhythm & Booze Sarah Jayne Therapy Taylor Anderson The Welfare By the time you are reading this a new kit will be on order. We are going back to the more traditional colours of black and amber and you’ll soon see people walking round the village in it. Raging Bull are supplying the kit and in due course, we should have a online shop with Rossington Hornets merchandise available

ause for a Cuppa
Thank you for popping in again today. I appreciate Paula (owner/editor of Rossington Today) allowing me this space for Cause for a Cuppa. Please let her advertisers know you saw their ad when you use their services or visit their shop. It encourages them to keep advertising which helps Paula keep Rossington Today alive and well. I was really encouraged by the response from last month’s article about Dads. I want to thank all the readers and particularly those who contacted me during this past month. One gentleman texted me and said that he had decided to try and locate / re-connect with his mother. That is what these articles are all about. Maybe you are wondering what has happened in my situation since the June article. I sent the letter. I didn’t know what to expect. Oddly enough, I am not even sure what I HOPE will happen. All I really did was open the door. How would I react if he walks through? I mean … it’s been 1520 years since ANY contact. What do you ask? How do you start? “How have you been doing the last 20 years?” “How could you leave us like you did?” I think it will just have to be a “one step at a time” sort of situation. I may not have to think much about this. I have not heard anything as of today. It has been about 3 weeks since I sent the letter. It does take a week to cross the Atlantic. But it has been 3 weeks … I have to face the possibility that he may just not be bothered. I did have to accept that reality before I sent the letter. I don’t have any power over whether he responds or not. But I do have the power over how I see it. I had already decided that I am not going to be rejected / a victim again. I went through years of that, grieved the loss and have forgiven him. It is sad … sad that a man who saw 4 children enter the world and have gone on to be happy with career and family of their own. It is his own loss. Regardless of what may happen, I have chosen to celebrate Dadhood … even if I can’t look at my own past with happiness. I get to watch my daughter grow in her new marriage and now university. I get to hear her say, “Dad, I really miss you & Mum”. I get to watch my son go to uni for his passion … computers. We can actually have grown up, mature conversations. I get to be involved with Chase in all his happy times & struggles growing up. You can’t get much better than that! If you relate to my journey in any way, why not let me know about it? As always, thanks for reading and if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cuppa, the door is always open. ROSSINGTON MAIN F.C.
I honestly didn't think that there would be much to report during the summer months at a Football Club, but how wrong could I be. To tie up a few loose ends from the successful 2011-12 season and it is continued success.... The Club did win the Fair Play League for our Division despite our glut of yellow cards in the final match at Louth, in fact we had the best ratio of penalty points per match in the entire NCEL, so that's best record out of 40 clubs! To top that, our matchday programme was also voted best in the entire NCEL and also 11th nationally amongst ALL non-League clubs (goodness knows how many Clubs that is!!!) Sincere congratulations to our editor Pete Murden, who unfortunately is stepping down from this role next season. At the Club's AGM held recently, all officers were voted back en bloc. Alan Jones was elected Vice-Chairman and George Spears and our ladies in the tea-bar were additions to our Committee. In order to speed up our closedseason work on the ground, a Grounds subCommittee was formed and residents of Oxford Street will be only too aware that we have begun minor alterations and improvements to the surrounds, as a group of volunteers meet up at weekends and one night in the week to carry out these tasks. One of our major concerns is to improve and extend the car parking facilities at the ground to alleviate the problem of cars parking on adjoining streets on busy matchdays. Many of our other jobs are merely cosmetic but necessary in order to meet ground grading criteria and to improve facilities for players and spectators alike, so if you don't mind a bit of DIY or painting feel free to join us as we prepare for the start of the new season. I know that the poor weather recently has left people wondering as to when or if we are going to see any summer, but one person who is happy to see the current rain is our groundsman, as the pitch looks better than ever with fairly consistent natural watering after fertilising and seeding that was carried out in May. There is just a bit more of filling in and levelling to be done prior to the new season and keeping the grass at a reasonable height, which in this weather needs regular cutting. The groundsman is on the look-out for a few sponsors to assist with the costs of the materials required to keep the playing surface at Oxford Street in good condition in order to attract more Cup Finals and possibly tempt 12 | ROSSINGTON TODAY
some League Clubs into visiting us for friendly games, as well as provide an excellent surface on which our teams can play. With regard to next season the Club have withdrawn their U.19 team mainly due to the costs of hosting midweek matches in the winter months and the increasing usage of floodlights. The 1st team are likely to be playing even more in midweek next season as the division is possibly increased from 20 clubs to 22, and our high placing in Division 1 has warranted entry into the League's President Cup competition, an extra commitment on top of the other 5 Cups the Club are usually involved in each year. We will continue to run a 2nd team and last season's very successful U.16 Boys team, under the guidance of Troy Bubb, will continue as U.17s under the banner of the Junior Section but using our facilities on a Sunday morning. We would hope that players in their late teens could push through to represent our Senior sides, and any youngsters out there who are prepared to work hard to improve their standard of football then come down to the ground and see what we are trying to achieve. Pre-season training commences on Saturday June 23rd at 1-00p.m. down at the ground and subsequent sessions will be held twice a week at 7-00p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The early start is due to the NCEL season starting on Saturday August 4th, a good fortnight before most other football commences this year. Sadly we shall not be travelling to North Wales for 2 pre-season games in July but venturing across to the East coast with 2 teams for matches versus Cleethorpes Town on July 21st. Four days later our 1st team travel to Pocklington Town for an evening friendly. Prior to these matches we have home games scheduled versus Harworth and Winterton on the 11th and 14th July respectively. An approach has been made to try and entice Doncaster Rovers to Oxford Street for their annual "community" friendly, but as yet we have not received a reply. Manager Steve Lodge is keen to perhaps gain one more competitive game in the run-up to the 2012-13 season. The Club's presentation evening was put back to June this year and therefore I don't have details of our individual award winners at present. The date is Friday June 15th, the same evening as England's game versus Sweden and co-incidentally the deadline for the July article for this magazine. See you down at Oxford Street on July 11th (if not before with your paint-brush) IAN WILSON

ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – July News
This is it – potentially the biggest month in British cycling history has just begun....! At this point Bradley Wiggins will have just set off as the ante-post favourite in the three week long quest for Tour de France glory and his bid to claim Britain’s first Yellow Jersey. Meanwhile Wiggins’ Team Sky colleague Mark Cavendish will be defending the Green ‘Points’ Jersey he won in Paris last year in the race – although his own preparations for the Olympic Road Race (which is the first Gold Medal available in the games) may see him cut his 2012 Tour short....? Yorkshire’s Lizzie Armitstead (Womens Road Race) and Ed Clancy (Mens Team Pursuit – track) will also feature alongside household names like Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton as the GB Cycling team forms the cornerstone of the GB squad’s Gold Medal hopes at the London Games. Closer to home and 2011 National Criterium Champion, Rossington’s own Graham Briggs will have battled to defend the National Champions Jersey that he has represented so well in the Halfords Tour Series on our TV screens though May and June, and with the Elite Series coming up also we may not have seen the last of him in 2012 yet? Briggs claimed an individual win in the 12 event Tour Series at Colchester, as well as securing vital team points along the way and helping a Team Raleigh-GAC team mate claim the overall sprints title and was prominent at the sharp end of the racing throughout the five week series. On the local open racing front the club have continued to be well represented with Gary Irvine and Stephen Patterson claiming category awards at the Sheffrec 10 on 19/5 and one of our three teams in the Stocksbridge CC 3-up 25 claiming the award with Best Junior – Stephen Patterson again! Unfortunately the club’s highest scoring riders in the J E James League haven’t been able to compete as often and
18 | ROSSINGTON TODAY
with your club’s top three point scorers counting in the team event we have slipped down to tenth in the overall competition, behind but within striking distance of local rivals – Sugarcane Creative (eighth) and Doncaster Wheelers (seventh). Further down the racing ladder and the club’s own race league, ‘The AAD Gas Handicap TT Trophy’ is approaching its halfway stage and has suffered no further wash-outs in the last month! Gary ‘The Turbine’ Irvine has replaced Stephen Patterson at the top of the league, which shapes up as follows: 1. Gary Irvine 38 points 2. Stephen Patterson 36 3. Mark Billingham 34 4. Richard Lunt 27 5. Matthew Harrison 21 So with ten rounds remaining and ten points up for grabs each week it’s anyone’s and everyone’s to ride for! The members that attended the Dales weekend in May were greeted by glorious conditions that made ice-cream stops essential and the main Saturday ride was a great day on the bike – an 85 mile loop from Masham via Leyburn Moor, Aysgarth Falls, Grassington, Pateley Bridge and back to Masham – even a 2.5 mile, 15% climb after 75 mile didn’t take the shine off the ride.....and not a geocache (?) mentioned! I’ve not left much space to talk about general club activities past and upcoming in the next month but generally Sunday’s at 9.00am for 70 miles and Tuesday’s at 6.30pm for a steady 30 miles are the main club runs but please refer to our website www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk, our facebook page under the club’s name, follow our twitter feed ‘@RossoWheelers’ or speak to Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue to check these arrangements or delve a little bit further into what the club has to offer. Safe riding! Brendan Simpson

OSSINGTON M.W.B.C. We are almost at the mid-point of the bowling season and the Club is progressing well with an increased playing membership and all teams recording their share of success on the greens. Not that the Club exists to win trophies, our policy is to allow all members access to play competitive bowling if they so wish and to this end selection of teams is often on a rota system and not based on previous results. Although it is satisfying to have played well and won, it is equally important at our stage of life to have gained some exercise in the fresh air, enjoyed our game and mixed socially with our team-mates and opposition. However it is encouraging to record that to date our Over 60s Doubles B team have suffered just one defeat in 8 matches, and our Saturday League A team have a similar record but from just 5 games. Sadly we are now out of all Cup Competitions for the season, but we were far from disgraced -our B team faced A team opposition in both the Brooke Farm Handicap and Bufton Cup, whilst our A team met possibly the 2 strongest sides in the borough in Armthorpe A and Woodlands Park A in their ties. New playing members Doreen Muffett and Frank Thompson have now tasted competitive League action, and Frank was the star in the recent in-house competitions held on our greens over the Bank Holiday and Jubilee weekend. With Ken Sanders and Joan Wright he won the triples competition and 2 days later partnering yours truly he walked off with the doubles title also. I believe I may well have stated that visitors to our greens are commenting on their quality, and our Club are being praised for their hospitality. It is down to this that we are being regularly requested to host other matches. In one week we hosted no fewer than 4 separate Cup ties - 5th June it was a Bufton Cup doubles between Denaby and Yorkshire Main, then on
20 | ROSSINGTON TODAY
the 8th (a Friday evening) we hosted 2 Hospital Cup matches and the following afternoon a South Yorkshire Rose Bowl tie between Adwick and Wickersley. Doncaster's A team Federation side meet South Lakes (Cumbria) on Sunday June 24th and again they have chosen Rossington to host. I must pay tribute at this point to our greenkeepers, but also to the other volunteers within the Club who are willing to give up their time to assist with the hosting of these events - making teas, selling refreshments, washing up and measuring etc. Not only are the greens in good condition but the members have taken it upon themselves to help with the edges and the gardening. It will not be too long before these gardens are a "visitor attraction" based on the committment and time spent by Harold Wren, Malc Needham, Ken Sanders and others in keeping them in such tidy and colourful fashion. Now I know I'm an early riser and a regular visitor to the greens on a morning, but Harold generally has spade, hoe or fork in hand before I've crossed the Car Park....Many thanks to all our volunteers. Through your efforts our Club is gaining an excellent reputation and it is definitely one of the best venues in Doncaster to visit for any bowls event. After a very hot 10 days or so when the greens became very "fast" and tricky, we have returned to damp and unseasonal cold weather which is not ideal for our sport and has seen our members don their waterproof coats once more. These coats must be getting over-used because a notice has gone up whereby members can re-order, or else they are ordering them for their holidays. So wherever you go on holiday this year, look out for the light blue coat with the Rossington Bowls Club emblem and you know you will be in good company. As usual for any further details regarding RMWBC contact the Secretary on 867221. "MEASURES PLEASE, KEN"

We're still alive and kicking and despite not having any meetings, we have applied for assistance from our Parish Council for the required public liability insurance and hope to hear from them soon. If this goes well for us, we will probably call a meeting to discuss what events, if any, we could organise, to try and bring our community together. Any ideas are always welcome! The coffee mornings are planned to continue until the end of the year, the next one being on Thursday 12th July, 9:15 to 11:30, and everyone is welcome to come and join us in the Brodsworth Way Paviliion for a cuppa and natter. Further, if you have any matters on that estate that you would like to raise, let me know or, better still, attend the PACT meetings and speak with the Police and Council. Susan, Tel. 869001
