Don’t be afraid of change. You may lose something good, but you will gain something better.

Unknown author

Another school year is coming to an end, and another set of young people are heading towards a change of nursery/school/ college/apprenticeship/further education/ employment. Leaving the place that they will have hopefully been very happy for many years can be a sad time for both children and their parents but it is also a positive time when we can look forward to what is to come and the new opportunities available. Whatever change you or your loved ones may be facing over the coming months, I hope it will be a change for the better. The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th July. Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Cause for a Cuppa Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa! I hope you have been enjoying some of the gorgeous weather we’ve been experiencing. Someone said it’s meant to be the nicest summer in 13 years. No complaints here! I was thinking we might chat about something today that has been niggling away at me for some time. It’s that of electronics. I can’t believe I said that! I have a university degree in microelectronics, working a total of about 15 years in the industry. For anyone who knows me, you know I like my Apple (not the eating kind .. though those are nice too) devices … our video projector … laser projector … Christmas fairy light display … lights in general and virtually all things that can be plugged in and especially if it has a keypad on it. One of the battles that has raged in our house has been the amount of time on gaming devices … consoles, computer, hand held devices, etc. I won’t get into all that now but just in the last few days I have read some articles and seen a brief discussion on a report that has come out about WKH H΍ HFWV RI H[FHVVLYH YLGHR JDPH SOD\ One article, written by Victoria Prooday (https:// yourot.com/parenting-club/2017/5/24/what-arewe-doing-to-our-children) brought out some very clear points from her perspective. The reality is that smart phones, tablets and computers are a part of our culture. They were not part of mine growing up and I doubt they were part of yours. But they are part of our children’s and as such we NEED to be aware of both the blessing and the curse they can bring. I know this is a hot topic and has resulted in more than one argument in our house … and maybe yours. But if you would allow me to bring up a couple of thoughts. How much do we use technology as baby sitters? ΖȇP QRW WDONLQJ DERXW WKH NLGV ZDWFKLQJ D ȴ OP

while we chill with a cuppa and a friend. What I’m talking about is the temptation of them ALWAYS having some sort of screen time because it’s just plain easier. I’m not against electronics … I’m really not. But I have found it true that in my life ȴ QGLQJ EDODQFH KDV DOZD\V EHHQ D VWUXJJOH So what happens if little Johnny or Kasey develops this electronic overload? Could it limit the ability to learn to socialise in the real world? But Eric, what about social media or chat during gaming? I’m not against social media or chat during gaming. I like FaceBook. It’s a great tool. We all need to learn face to face skills: learning to get on with someone, looking someone in the eye, sharing, non-verbal communication. It’s not an all or nothing thing. It’s about balance. Anyone who comes to Messy Church or All In knows the word I hate to hear … “bored”. Normally the little word “I’m” is stuck in front of it to create the little sentence “I’m bored”. Victoria points out that schools are having an increasingly GLɝ FXOW WLPH ZLWK WKH GHFUHDVLQJ DWWHQWLRQ span of children. Teachers cannot compete with many of the adrenaline producing, heart thumping games that children are playing. What’s wrong with being bored? What’s wrong with having to be creative to entertain yourself? There is always the outside. I have seen the printed shirt … “I went outside once but the graphics weren’t that good”. I know it’s meant to draw a laugh but I fear there is too much truth in it. During these warm days, I would challenge all of us to get outside on a clear night, look up and enjoy one of the best and biggest screens there is. And the resolution is fantastic! Along side of that, our children need to learn that SOME monotonous work is a reality. Folding clothes, washing pots, mowing the lawn and cleaning the house are all things that need to be done. Are we preparing our children to be successful adults by teaching by word and deed these vital character traits? How’s it for you? Let’s chat. The door is always open and the kettle on.

The Friends of Doncaster Museums This is an exciting time as Doncaster progresses an ambitious new project to develop a multipurpose cultural hub alongside the existing museum on Chequer Road. The new space will incorporate many of the features of the existing building whilst freeing up the 1964 museum as a study centre and research space. The Friends of Doncaster Museums are a group of people drawn from across the borough who meet on a regular basis throughout the year to enjoy a varied programme of talks and visits. We also raise funds which can be used to support acquisitions to the collection at Doncaster Museum and Art

Gallery and also at Cusworth Hall. We have just held our Annual General Meeting where we reviewed a very successful \HDU 2XU GRQDWLRQbKHOSHG secure a large Lottery Fund Grant which meant that the Medieval Conisbrough Court Rolls were acquired by the Archive Service and by part funding the conservation of three Brazilian paintings donated to the museum after the Second World War, we attracted a large anonymous donation followed by funding by the Brazilian Embassy in London which ensured they could be included in a major exhibition in the capital. Looking forward, we have an exciting and varied programme over the next year with guest speakers including our own Gervase Phinn, the renowned Egyptologist Joann Fletcher

and the Co-Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces, author and broadcaster Tracy Borman. We have also committed to raise the funds to pay the subscription of Heritage Doncaster to the Contemporary Arts Society and to celebrate WKH WKbDQQLYHUVDU\ RI WKH Č´ UVW moon landing we are booking a mobile planetarium to be at the museum for a day during National Science Week. Ann is 69 and lives alone in Doncaster. Ann has always been a very sociable person and thrives when she is surrounded by people. When we met Ann in January she was bereaved, depressed and would go days without seeing anyone. Research carried out by Age UK in 2016 highlights that half a million older people go at least five or six days a week, without seeing or speaking to anyone at all. Circles are putting a stop to this by supporting people to get out more and make new connections. Each Circle has a clear purpose that connects a person to something they are passionate about. Ann’s purpose was to ‘Join a group and meet new people’. Ann was matched with our volunteer Joan who introduced her to a social group at Bentley Library, which she now attends every week. ‘I feel miles better now; I have Joan, my volunteer and I have something to look forward to every week!’ Ann is now volunteering herself on the project and supporting other people to make new connections in their community. You don’t need to have specific education or skills to volunteer. Just 2 hours a week can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Contact the Circles team to find out how you can get involved. 01302 812345, Circlesteam@ ageukdoncaster.org.uk. T

community Community Hi I have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition of the Retford Life. I have attached our new logo and old leaflet. Please could you change

the old leaflet by: - physiotherapy clinic Your local

GETTING STRONGER... The subject of getting stronger has cropped up in several ways recently. The situation that occurs most often is when talking to patients about how many reps of an exercise they need to do in order to strengthen a certain muscle. I’ve also recently discussed how to keep elderly relatives strong and I’ve chatted with my lovely friend this week about reclaiming the strength in her body that has been wiped out by cancer treatment. Regardless of the situation, the general principle remains the same – you need to ‘work to fatigue’ which means that whether LWȇV D VSHFLČ´ F H[HUFLVH RU D IXQFWLRQDO DFWLYLW\ you need to do enough of it to feel physically tired (like when your legs go ‘juddery’ after tons of stairs!). This places increased stress on your muscles which then respond by becoming stronger in order to meet the demand being placed on them. As my children are frequently reminded whilst out hiking‌tired legs are to be embraced as it means they will wake up stronger! So, when it comes to reps – the answer to “How many shall I do?â€? will depend on whether I’m talking to a rugby player in their prime or a crochet loving librarian of mature age. The point at which their PXVFOHV EHFRPH WLUHG ZLOO EH YHU\ GLÎ? HUHQW When it comes to generalised weakness DÎ? HFWLQJ IXQFWLRQ WKHQ WKH PRUH WKH DFWLYLW\ is perfomed, the better the body is going to be able to cope. In the case of elderly relatives this is perhaps counterintuitive because when we see loved ones struggling then of course we want to step in and help. But the saying “Use it or lose itâ€? really is true!

DONCASTER YOUTH CHARITY SEEKS INDEPENDENT TRUSTEES EXPECT Youth, Doncaster’s innovative children’s and youth services charity, is seeking to expand its current Board through the appoint of additional voluntary independent trustees to progress its agenda for future growth and development. EXPECT Youth began in 2017, with the aim of improving the lives of children and young people across Doncaster. It was initially set up as a collaboration between key partners, including Doncaster Council, Club Doncaster Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. On the back of this, EXPECT Youth won the Success Through Partnership Working category at the Doncaster Business Awards in 2017. It has also just secured a major new contract with the Department for Education to deliver Essential Life Skills services to youngsters in the town.

You have another couple of weeks to catch this exhibition and every piece of work in this group exhibition, which has been put together by the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, demonstrates what a mysterious and dextrous material glass is. Really interesting. However the Lithopane show, also at the Harley, (Dear Reader, you will perhaps remember that I mentioned this new word ‘Lithopane’ a couple of months ago) was a huge disappointment and demonstrated that it doesn’t matter how much you dress up your art-practice technology in fancy language (and the particular technology involved here was as basic as industrial ceramic printing which you will find on the mug from which you are now drinking your tea) if the artwork is no more interesting than a snap shot, then that’s it – it’s just a snap shot. I have it on several good authorities, and by the time you will read this, I too will have been, that the big summer show GUISEPPE PENONE at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is terrific. Hello Rossington Residents. RPC Facebook Page

Rossington Neighbourhood Plan

Follow us on our Facebook Page Rossington Parish Council

The Parish Council has been working on your Neighbourhood Plan for a number of years now. We have consulted with the community on a number of occasions so with the support of Andrew Towlerton from Yourlocale and Jane Stimpson from Doncaster Council we are almost ready to submit the draft plan. If the examiner recommends the draft plan can proceed, Doncaster Council will organise a referendum for the residents of Rossington. This will be at no cost to Rossington Parish Council. However, we are going to do TWO FINAL CONSULATIONS at the Summer Festival and at the Village Fete so please come to the stand and let us know your thoughts and feelings. We literally have taken on board every contribution made by local residents.

Congratulations to Carol and Derek Wileman On Saturday 2 June 2018 Rossington Parish Cllr Carol Beaumont and Derek Wileman were married. Carol is the Vice Chair of the Parish Council and a very active member of the community. Derek ran the local newsagents and video shop for many years. They had their reception in the Memorial Hall which was a resounding success. We wish them all the happiness for the future. NEWS FROM THE EAST NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE INSPECTOR Dear Readers,

As usual, I begin this month’s article with a brief resume of the main crimes of interest which have occurred in Rossington between 11th May and 14th June. Remember, the crimes I have mentioned EHORZ GR QRW UHȵ HFW DOO FULPH which has taken place in the village, but are those which I believe will be of most interest to readers. To begin with, we recorded three residential burglaries where the house was targeted. 7KLV UHPDLQV D VLJQLȴ FDQWO\ lower number compared to a few months ago. One of these crimes was domestic related for which we have a suspect. We also recorded two attempted burglaries where the garden shed was attacked. We recorded two actual and two attempted commercial burglaries, four theft from vehicle crimes and two theft of vehicles. These levels are similar to those we have experienced over the previous few months. In three of the thefts from vehicles, entry was forced to the car and items taken. In the other case, number plates were stolen. This type of incident is common across the country and they are stolen for a variety of reasons. However, you can reduce the risk of falling victim to this type of crime by purchasing anti tamper screws, which work on a similar principal to locking wheel nuts and come ZLWK VSHFLDO KHDGV WR ȴ W WKHP I am also aware of another 44 ROSSINGTON TODAY

two vehicles which were GHOLEHUDWHO\ VHW RQ ȴ UH RYHU the past month. The cars were located at separate addresses and there is no obvious evidence to connect them at this time. With regard to anti-social behaviour, we recorded just XQGHU WKLUW\ R΍ HQFHV GXULQJ the month of May and we are seeing consistent levels of ASB. However, as the nights are now lighter and warmer, we will see an increase in complaints and I urge parents to ensure you know where your children are and what they are up to, particularly during the forthcoming summer holiday period. I also wanted to mention MXVW D IHZ RWKHU WKLQJV I attended the Rossington Parish Council on 12 June and a few issues were raised including speeding vehicles. :H FRQGXFWHG RXU ȴ UVW VSHHG enforcement operation a few weeks ago in Bawtry and $XVWHUȴ HOG XVLQJ Rɝ FHUV from my team. Complaints of speeding are common across the district and we have a number of areas to visit, but we will visit Rossington as soon as possible. Last month, I highlighted the issue of young people swimming in our local rivers and canals. I just wanted to remind readers about this, particularly in view of the warmer weather we have been enjoying. Please remind young people they should

not go swimming in these locations. It is also a good time to remember to keep \RXU JURXQG ȵ RRU ZLQGRZV and doors closed and locked during the warmer weather. I also mentioned that I was looking at introducing a ‘Partners and Communities Together Meetings’ (PACTs) which will cover the Rossington area. I am pleased to inform \RX WKDW WKH ȴ UVW PHHWLQJ date has been set for 7pm on 24 July at the Ragusa Centre on Radburn Road. This is a great opportunity to attend and meet the local Rɝ FHU IRU \RXU DUHD DQG raise any concerns you may have. Further details will be advertised locally and via our Facebook page and website. Finally, as we look to develop alternative ways to engage with local communities, I wanted to mention that we are looking at introducing interactive question and answer sessions with the public via Facebook. I am awaiting further information on this but will keep you appraised of developments. Don’t forget you can access up to date information and stories from SYP via our Facebook page – just search for Doncaster East NHP. Alternatively, you can look at our website page – www. southyorks.police.uk.
