2015 edition

Well exams are over for my family and I am sure that students up and down the country will be celebrating. Just the results in August to look forward to now!
FREE adult tea or coffee and FREE childs juice and biscuits per child entry. 9.30-1pm Monday - Friday term time only.
I am sure that all of the end of school year activities such as sports days, summer fairs, concerts and transition days will all now be well under way. It is my first year for many years that I haven’t had a child at primary school and I think that without all these activities that remind me that the school year is coming to a close, end of term is going to catch me a little by surprise. Just a reminder that all ‘Today’ Publications are available online within a couple of days of distribution each month. You can access them from the home page of www. todaypublications.co.uk or from our facebook page www. facebook.com/todaymags These online versions can be very useful if you need to find an advertisers details when at work, or out and about and don’t have a copy of the magazine to hand. The August issue will be delivered to you late July, in fact it may even by early August as I seem to have large numbers of distributors on holiday the last week in July! Apologies if your copy does arrive a few days later than normal. If you would like to have something included in this issue, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th July.
Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x

Welcome back. Why not grab your brew and walk with me back on memory lane for just a bit. I see it like it was yesterday. The old farmhouse was so drafty, you could near enough see the curtains blow in the wintery wind. Our favourite room in the old place was the lounge where we had the big fireplace. Mum would let us roast hotdogs on the fire like it was a BBQ. On really cold nights, she would let us camp out in front of the fireplace to keep warm (or at least until the fire went out). Sparks would fly out now and again so we had to be careful. She could only afford one lot of heating oil every year so she had to ration it out for as long as she could. Things were very tight. Going out to eat was not even on the bucket list. Just putting a meal on the table was a big enough chore for her. I felt a bit weird because most of the other kids brought
money for their school dinners on a Monday but didn’t quite know why Mum never had to give me money for mine. She had the ability to turn leftovers into a gourmet meal. But even sometimes that was just not enough, being on her own with a brood of 4. We played basketball every Saturday morning with a local club. My team was the “Green Hornets”. Mr. Gibson was the referee. He was always kind to me and tried to help improve my basketball skills (didn’t work too well, but he tried). To this day, I will never know how he knew … but he knew. One especially cold night in November (close to the American Thanksgiving Day) Mr. Gibson turned up to our house with a large box of food. The only thing I remember was the size of that turkey! A couple weeks later, he showed up again with a load of firewood. We helped him stack it on the back porch. I didn’t see Mum go for her purse. He just said Merry Christmas, God bless you and drove off. I didn’t quite understand but that winter we had loads of nice fires.
A whole lot of years have passed since that winter. I know that tough times give us perspective. I am so thankful that now in Rossington, we are part of the Doncaster Food Bank. On a Thursday, 11-1 at the Holmescarr Centre, we have a team who do what Mr. Gibson did. I wanted to encourage everyone that there is no shame in needing an extra bit of help. We all do at times in life. There are many voucher holders throughout the village. If you know someone needing emergency assistance for a tough time, pop down or give us a bell. It isn’t just giving a parcel of food … it is giving a lifeline and help to try and address the underlying issue. I wanted to thank the entire team of volunteers and those who donate food to make it happen. Oddly enough, some years ago I re-discovered Mr. Gibson … in a church. I put 2 & 2 together. He was doing what Jesus would do if He were here. Hmmm, so that’s what God looks like … As always, the door is open and the kettle is on.

Rossington Parish Council Thank you from all the Parish Councillors, both old and new, for placing your trust in us to help improve our village. As the new Chair may I firstly thank all the councillors that supported me to become chair and to recognise all the achievements and hard work by Richard the retiring chair. For those that do not know me, please let me introduce myself my name is Barry Johnson, I am married to Jayne (also a new Parish Councillor) and we both have the interest of the village at heart! I am a health & safety, quality and environmental auditor/advisor and have been a Parish and DMBC Councillor before and supported Robin Hood Airport, FARRRS, the Inland Port, the Golf Course, Broadband to the Brodsworth Way Estate and many other projects which I believe if developed properly with due regard to the environment, people and the community can bring many benefits to Doncaster and more importantly to Rossington! I also support Rossington & Tickhill Cricket Clubs and Doncaster Rovers (RTID).
which informs all our work. We can directly manage our own activities to improve our environmental and economic performance. In addition our community leadership role puts us in a unique position to influence our wider partners.
I believe that RPC should be a forward thinking organisation that is committed to respecting, protecting and improving the local environment and economy. Our policy should include ‘creating a cleaner & better environment’ as one of the guiding principles

Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club As I touched upon last month this year’s major club charity effort takes place in July where we are raising funds for the aid of Brain Tumour Research ‘www.braintumourresearch.org’ via a 175 mile, single day ride to Flamborough Head and back on Sunday 12th July 2015. 25 riders have signed on to take up the challenge of the ride and many, many hours of riding/training have gone into preparing for the ride which is double the distance of the club’s usual summer time feature rides! We will be leaving Rossington at 6am and expect to arrive at the halfway point around 11.30am, the prevailing wind is generally a south westerly and so the return journey we anticipate to be slightly longer (and tougher) hopefully returning to Rossington around 7pm? The riding time in the saddle is approximately 11 hours at 16mph, with time taken for refuelling along the way. Please support a great cause and the riders in any way that you can (even just asking for a clear and dry day!). The poster details a link to our JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/ wheelers-flamborough/ and there is also a text donation facility set up and detailed on the poster also. Riders and members will also be collecting sponsor donations individually. Thanks for your support on behalf of the Rossington Wheelers

community VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED The Royal Voluntary Service, initially as the WRVS, has had a long standing presence at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. As well as our Shop, which has recently been refurbished, in the Women and Children’s Hospital and our Tea Bar in the Fracture Clinic we run a Hospital Trolley Service which serves the wider Hospital Community by visiting the Wards. Our Trolley Service helps brighten the Day of those Patients who have to stay in Hospital for a while. A stay which is often boring and quite monotonous. With a wide selection of Confectionery and Savoury snacks plus puzzle books, novels and toiletries there are plenty of Items to choose from. If you have a few hours to spare each week, are relatively fit and like meeting people why not join our Trolley Rota and help bring a bit ofcheer to the Patients of the DRI.
Grange Lane Infant Academy Children of Grange Lane Infant Academy in Rossington have been busy raising sponsorship money for Mr Jones as he prepared to take part in the Teachers Vs Legend Match at the Keepmoat Stadium in May for the Doncaster based Eve Merton Dreams Trust, a cancer support charity. The children had a sporty charity day where they brought a donation to wear their sports kit and take part in lots of activities such as mini kicks football and tricky obstacle courses, even the nursery children joined in the fun. Many pupils also represented Grange Lane Infant Academy as mascots at the Keepmoat and cheered Mr Jones along. Although the Teacher/Heroes lost by 9-5 it was a great day, with lots of support. With sponsorships, ticket sales and the sporty charity day, Mr Jones and Grange Lane Infant Academy has raised a whopping ÂŁ810 for the Eve Merton Dreams Trust. A huge thank you everyone! T

GARDENING – A PHYSIOTHERAPY GUIDE Many of us love getting out in the garden during the summer months. Unfortunately, for some this will be spoiled by aches and pains. Common complaints associated with gardening include back pain, muscular strains and knee problems. Here are our top tips for reducing the risk of these problems occurring … Stay fit Working on your general fitness (especially through the winter) will help to keep your body conditioned to cope with the stress of gardening. Strength exercises can reduce knee strain and Pilates can improve the way you move so the risk of injury is reduced. Warm up Walking or jogging on the spot and some simple movements and stretches will prepare your body for activity. Lift and bend carefully If you are working at ground level, get down onto your knees (use a kneeling pad for extra comfort). Reduce the load where able and use the wheelbarrow for transportation. Don’t reach or lift at arms length. Ask yourself is the task a ‘2 man job’ and get help if it is. Take regular breaks Avoid prolonged periods of time (30 minutes) doing the same activity. Regularly changing the task you are doing helps to prevent overloading the body.

St Michael’s Rossington Garden Party On August 15th (Saturday)
Introducing... the tree bumblebee Bombus Hypnorum this little chap with a white furry bottom is particularly active now, and a small number of them are probably doing figures of eight by your garage roof, or outside a nesting box on your apple trees.... I've had 3 calls about them this week and I am not even on the Councils’ list of bee-keepers to call! ...if you have them, don't worry. They are not interested in you, these are the drones on the lookout for a queen... they are relatively benign and if you try and move them you will kill them. Come the end of July the whole colony except the queens die off. The queens hibernate until March. Honey bees are the only bees to go through the winter as a colony. Have a look at British beekeepers website to help identify bees. http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/do_you_ have_a_swarm.php If you ring the council with a problem about bees they will give you the phone number of one of the members of Doncaster Beekeepers association. They get a lot of calls, and if it is a genuine swarm of honey bees will be happy to help as long as they aren’t somewhere inaccessible like a chimney or at the top of an enormous tree. The council (because of the cuts) have no one to deal with bees now. So please take some time and properly identify your bees before making that phone call. Bumble bees are a protected species. Enjoy them. T

Water without the guilt...

But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon.
However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system.
But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant.
Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives.
A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size.
Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently.
Who remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks.
You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres! With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free. 24

Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further. A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth!
Enjoy your garden. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Hello and Thank you from Councillor Rachael Blake I am one of your 3 DMBC ward councillors, and through Rossington Today I will keep you informed about the work I am doing, what is going to be happening in the village, the concerns residents have raised and what I have done to address those concerns. Firstly I would like to thank everyone I spoke to during the election campaign, and thank you to everyone who voted in both the local and national elections and voted for me and my Labour colleagues. The number of people who voted in the ward was fantastic with our ward having one of the highest turnout rates, which was why our results was one of the last to be announced, with Clive, John and I elected as your 3 councillors for the ward. I was delighted to be elected and will spend the next two years working hard to make sure that the village becomes the village that you want it to be. The changes in our ward was something I talked about a lot on the doorstep when canvassing, with not everyone realising that the ward now isn’t just Rossington, but Bawtry and Austerfield as well. In terms of new developments, this ward is probably experiencing the most throughout Doncaster and it is my role as your councillor to make sure those developments bring real benefits to local people. Keeping you informed about these developments is something that I will do in this monthly update. Since May 8 I have been getting to know the
village even more, dealing with resident issues and making sure that residents, groups and services know who I am and where I can be contacted. Also, I have been arranging and having meetings with people who provide services such as DMBC and South Yorkshire Police so I can get problems solved quickly when I get complaints about things. One of the promises we made in our election leaflet was to hold regular surgeries throughout the ward in venues and times that are accessible for all residents, listen to residents’ concerns and deal with them. I have arranged 4 surgeries up to now, 2 of which are in the village and these will be on: 2nd Friday of every month at Miners Welfare, West End Lane from 445pm - 5.30pm Last Tuesday of every month from 3-5pm at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street Please do come along with any problems and concerns that you have, or ask me about DMBC policies or services or come along and tell me about what you feel should be happening in the village. I would like to hold more surgeries, so if you have any suggestions about where these could be please do let me know. My surgeries aren’t the only time that you will see me, I will be out and about over the next month as well as attending community events, including on 4 July, Rossington Fun Palace at Holmescarr and on 26 July, the Family Fun Day at Rossington Miners Welfare, and attending the parish council so I look forward to meeting you. Please don’t wait to come to my surgeries - you can contact me anytime by phone or email. T: 01302 710251 or 07976896563 email: rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Facebook and twitter details will be included in the next Rossington Today. T

Welcome To All Residents of Rossington. It is pleasing and interesting to receive the many enquiries and requests from all parts of our ward. With such a number, please bear with me, if it takes a while to address and answer your welcome interests. Now after the 2nd meeting of Rossington Parish Council, the committee membership has been decided and a new Allotment committee has been formed. This we should find as a useful addition especially with the development of the Grange lane allotment site progressing well. (Committee Membership can be found on the Parish Website). No doubt the Projects committee will be soon be meeting and will be proposing a series of events and activities for the coming year. The issue of “The Neighbourhood Plan” was on the agenda and it was decided this could be completed after a last round of public consultation in the form of a short questionnaire in a forthcoming issue of Rossington Today. Some relevant points were made in the public forum, the main being the issue of Police civilian car parking on Station Road and New Lane. This was explained as a result of the rationalisation of Police Stations in the Doncaster district and more Police being stationed in Rossington to cover a larger area than before. The dangers and hazard of this issue was not “lost” on everyone attending and it was decided that immediate action must be taken to resolve this important point. The Parish Council and All three of your DMBC Councillors are to make representations to the Police Inspector in charge and the Police and Crime Commissioner, to rectify this problem as quickly as possible. Another point raised was the amount of dust arising from the piling of coal and movement of slag at the colliery site. The Parish Council has been actively working with Recycle Coal and DMBC to address this situation, but it was felt another meeting with Recycle may be beneficial Another interesting point raised was an update for the opening of the link road. DMBC Cllr Rachael Blake stated that this should be in the spring of 2016 after more news from the constructors and DMBC. Hopefully your DMBC Councillors will have more news and updates about Phase 2 of the link road and possibly the new road to the Wildlife Park in future issues. 32
Rossington Today
The area around the junction of Nelson Road and Kings Avenue is once again causing concern especially with the parking of vehicles. This area also suffers with drainage problems and once again DMBC will be requested to solve both issues and alleviate these problems. With regard to the rear areas of the Radburn estate, initially one area is to be refurbished and this is now at the planning stage. As your DMBC Councillor, I will be working my ward colleagues and all concerned parties to progress further improvements to the neglected parts of this estate. The resolution about the Railway crossing is still ongoing and soon we may be able to announce the next steps in Network Rails submissions to the Department of Transport. DMBC Highways department have been informed about the Traffic problems relating to Littleworth Lane by DMBC Cllr Clive Stone and myself and a meeting is being arranged with DMBC to achieve a satisfactory outcome to the current situation. (Future Topic for the lane is also winter gritting). May I take this opportunity to apologise to Bawtry Town Council for my absence at their recent Town council meeting. It is unfortunate that Rossington Parish and Bawtry Town hold their meetings on the same day and date, but I will endeavour to attend as much as possible. By all accounts it was a lively affair and I am sorry I missed the discussions and debate. I shall try and attend Austerfield Parish Council meetings as frequently as possible as well. DMBC Councillor John Cooke ( john.cooke@doncaster. gov.uk ) DMBC Councillor Clive Stone ( clive.stone@doncaster. gov.uk ) Will be available 12 noon till 1.00pm in the Turnpike Public House, Bawtry on the 3rd Saturday of each month except December. AND Will be available 12 noon till 1.00pm in the Welfare, West End Lane, Rossington on the 4th Saturday of each month except December. We hope to chat and see you.
With Regards Cllr John Cooke

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, Everyone has been wounded in the past. It is therefore no surprise to us that most of us would want to have a time of healing in our lives. Healing takes a lot of patience and a lot of time – days, weeks, months and sometimes years. Spiritual healing is similar to healing from a deep wound. It starts from the inside and ends on the outside. Thus, it may be difficult to see the steady healing process in our lives. We only need to believe that the mending process is taking place. Most of us forget to thank God when we are mended. Psalms 103: 1 - 5 below suggest that we praise God for healing us: “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (New International Version). How often do you say thanks for having your body and spirit mended? It’s time to start. However, as you wait for healing in your life, there is also the need to play your part. Joyce Rupp, in her book, “The cup of our life. A guide to spiritual growth’, suggests that in order to be mended
sometimes, you need to: o Identify and work with your emotions o Have compassion with yourself and others o Let go of your resistances o Trust and yield to God o Receive support from others o Extend and receive forgiveness o Take good care of your body and spirit I wonder if you can take sometime and work through the list above. It will do your body and spirit some good and bring healing. Here is a suggested prayer you would want to say after you have worked through: ‘God of healing, help me to mend the broken places in my life. Direct my mind and heart to sources of hope and healing. Let me not forget all that remains for me as I ponder what has gone from my life. Be my vision and my strength. Anoint me with the oil of your love and take my hand as I move forward into ever greater healing”. – Joyce Rupp Have a blessed month.

hen it Comes to Eco Friendly and Affordable Driveways, Resin Drives Have Got it Covered… even Celebrities Choose Them!No longer do homeowners and facilities managers have to resort to traditional tarmac to cover their driveways. Bradford based Resin Drives, the original resin drive company in Yorkshire, has unveiled its customisable, affordable and totally eco-friendly, resin drive solution, which offers robust performance without damaging the environment. It used to be that tarmac was the most effective way to cover surfaces such as driveways, paths and patios. However, being a relative of oil and coal, this black and sticky tar product is firmly lacking in green credentials and due to its chemical properties, is likely to melt in hot weather and crack in the cold. Resin Drives have created a solution that will not only keep surfaces smooth and even all year round, but it is also up to 10 times more ecologically friendly than its predecessor. The surfacing material is created by binding resin with a mix of coloured stones. The resin is made from organic materials that are resistant to weeds and naturally drains water. This not only means that it prevents puddles from forming on its surface, but
also that it adheres to urban drainage guidelines, so anyone wishing to surface their driveway or patio with this revolutionary new product needn’t apply for planning permission. The coloured stone mix that is used is completely customisable and not only do Resin Drives have an enormous range of styles and colours to choose from both on their website and in their showroom, but customers are also able to create their own designs to suit their own tastes. People are able to decorate the inside of their house in any way they please and now they can do the same with their driveway or patio. Resin Drives offer a seamless service from the initial design through to installation and after care. Their team of experts will not only come and visit each customer to help them choose the design they want, but they will also survey the area to be surfaced, dig up the old surface if needed and lay the resin bound finish. Unlike tarmac, which can be a long and drawn-out process, it can take as little as two days for the whole process to be completed, from inception to reality. This level of commitment to their customers’ needs has seen Resin Drives grow in the past 12 months and also adding celebrity homes to their client list. They have showrooms in both Bradford and Bridgend to become the UK’s leading provider of bond resin surface coverings and in Bradford they have Yorkshire’s largest indoor and outdoor showrooms for you to see, making it much easier to visualise which resin finish and colour would be right for your own home.
Have you considered how a beautiful resin surface can also transform your patio and paths, the aesthetic quality of resin has an immediate impact and will make you the envy of your neighbours, family and friends. They even recently laid a beautiful resin drive for Uri Geller and have had new resin driveways requested from a number of other celebrities…watch this space!
Here’s what some of their customers have to say... "We are very pleased with our new resin drive it looks amazing. From start to finish all staff and work teams were friendly, polite and efficient, cleaning everything as they worked. I would definitely recommend them." Mr and Mrs Robinson "Just had to compliment the installation team who did a great job on our drive and patio, the finished effect was instantaneous as soon as they started laying the resin I was totally blown away I have no hesitation in recommending resindrives.co.uk." Mrs Jackson "My husband and I would like to say how satisfied we were with your surveyors and work men they worked very fast and hard and left us with a very good looking drive." Mrs Meakin
