Welcome to

the JUNE 2014 edition

"I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June." - L. M. Montgomery

June magazine already – Where is this year disappearing to? In my last introduction I mentioned hoping to read a few books while enjoying some Easter sunshine. I did indeed manage to polish off 7 books, while enjoying a family break in Lanzarote. Only 3 from my ‘to read’ list – the others just ones that other people had left behind on the book swap shelf that I liked the look of! June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family fun days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only are they fun events, but also valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. The July issues will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th June. Please keep a close eye on closing dates if you would like to include things over the coming months, they can sometimes fall earlier than people expect and we are often working to very tight timescales to meet print deadlines. I hate it when I have to tell people they are too late to promote their events!

Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Enjoy the Moment! Welcome back for another brew & a chat. Isn’t it great to see some nice weather? It just makes the mood a bit lighter. When was the last time you took a moment to walk round and listen to the birds sing? I know the story they want to tell me… “enjoy the moment”. Well, how is your communication? Did you get a chance to put into practice anything we mentioned from last time? The Bible actually has much to say about this. Jesus makes a number of comments and repeats a fair few of them. Before diving into that, have you ever made this statement … “if I’ve told you once I’ve told you ____ times”. (Insert your own number. Mine is “1000”). Jesus’ version is “he that has ears to hear, listen …” (Matthew 11:15 and other places). The assumption is that we do have ears and we can hear. I realise that is not 100% accurate

for everyone. I would say very few of us have problems with the “having ears” bit but probably a number do struggle with hearing. I worked in the deaf community for several years in the States. I do get it. But regardless of whether you have a mechanical problem with hearing or not, the deaf struggle with “listening” as well. I used to tease them as they use both hands for sign language … “no, it’s just going in one hand and out the other”. Jesus is trying to get us to see the difference between “hearing” and “listening”. Hearing can just mean the mechanical function of the sound waves going into our ear and bang around in there. It is the sort that goes in one ear and out the other. We’ve all had that happen. “Callum, you need to tidy up your room before going out to play.” “OK, mum”. What happens next? Callum goes out to play. Callum may have heard it with his ears but it didn’t affect what he did. The kind of hearing Jesus is talking about is the

June Messy Church 9 June (Monday) AND 12 June (Thursday) 3.30-5.30 pm Holmescarr Community Centre (Grange Lane nr. ASDA)

kind that doesn’t just go into the ear but is processed then affects what we do, how we feel or what we think. He calls that “listening”. I struggle with this as much as the next bloke. The children are tired of me saying in assemblies … “we listen with our eyes, ears, mouths and bodies”. All of those bits need to be in place for us to truly listen. We need to look at the person, ears at the ready, not trying to multi-task with our hands (men!) while not trying to talk at the same time. If, after you have done all that, you don’t quite get it, repeat it back to clarify. Ask a question. It is called active listening. So this month, let’s challenge each other to do some active listening. It will take a bit of effort but you will reap huge rewards. As always, the door is open and the kettle is on.

Work out at Work

Workout at Work Day (#workoutatwork) is on Friday 6th June. This annual awareness day promoted by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) enables Physiotherapists to highlight the benefits of healthier work habits and increase levels of physical activity. Poor work habits include sitting for long periods, repetitive tasks, missing breaks and prolonged periods on electronic devices. This can increase the risk of developing aches and pains (musculoskeletal disorders) as well as contributing to stress, depression and anxiety. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimate the majority of days off sick are as a result of these sorts of problems and cost employers 10.4 million working days in 2012. As experts in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, Physiotherapists can facilitate patients’ recovery as well as help prevent injury and ill health in the first place. Active staff could mean reduced sickness rates, fewer compensation claims and reduced expenditure on temporary staff. Other likely benefits include increased employee satisfaction, better productivity and improved retention. The Work Foundation reports that for every £1 invested in wellbeing initiatives, businesses get a return of £3. Working out at work can mean active travel to and from work, desk based exercises or may involve a workplace walking club or lunchtime activity. Work station assessments and ensuring breaks are taken can prevent problems building up. Access to health information can make a difference and the CSP’s advice leaflets can be downloaded for free ( www.csp.org.uk) For information on how Blizard Physiotherapy are supporting Work Out @ Work Day visit www.blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk 8

Rossington Councillor’s Update There are moves afoot to start up girls/ladies football team(s) in Rossington. This will be based separately from the Welfare where all the boys play as it is thought that girls are put off if they think there is a chance that they will be mocked. So, they will be based elsewhere and train and play separately. As getting more girls to play is one of the Rover’s objectives, their coaches, from the Doncaster Rovers Community Foundation will be bringing their skills to bear. We have also had some interest from Doncaster Belles players. Anyone interested please contact Ali at the Poacher for details and to register your interest. I’m sure sponsorship can be raised so that it will not be costly to play. I’m sure that most of you have seen Yorkshire Water working on Queen Mary’s Road and was the reason that delayed the resurfacing of the roadway. Now I have been told in all seriousness that the resurfacing will take place in August. Do I believe it? Of course I do, where’s that pinch of salt and keep my fingers crossed. The Speed indicator sign on Littleworth Lane is now up and running, I am not particularly happy with it as it is difficult to see in daylight and doesn’t tell you if you are a naughty boy (or girl). Although it is there, it is still a work in progress. The money request to refurbish the market has gone to Mayor Ros Jones for approval as soon as that has been signed off then work should start. We need a better, brighter market with more customers and with more variety. The market could be the heart of Rossington as it once was. The fabric and infrastructure of the whole place is poor and is desperately in need of some TLC. We are actively looking for floodlights to light up the new skate park, so that it is usable for longer hours. We have a small sum of money that we may have available so we need to get, as my wife says, a bargain. It should be possible and this then will 10

ROSSINGTON TODAY

truly be an all year round attraction for our youth. We have been trying to persuade the Road safety team at DMBC to approve two zebra crossings at St Michaels, on Sheepbridge Lane opposite the school and one on Stripe Road opposite the Styrrup. So far we are hitting a brick wall, but we will keep trying. We are also trying to persuade the same people that the road system around the market is dangerous and needs opening up. On this they at least said that they would conduct a proper study. As you can now see the work on the link road is progressing fast. The future road can be seen at both ends with the work off junction 3 being the most spectacular. Finally and potentially the most important for the village; at the time of writing there is a rumour that Network Rail have proposed to DMBC that the rail crossing be closed permanently. If this is correct I believe that we should form a pressure group to oppose this. Life would be intolerable for everyone in the village. The trucks would have to travel down densely packed urban roads, Clay Flat Lane and Bond Street would become the main roads into the village and they are just not wide enough for extra traffic let alone heavy goods vehicles. The shops would suffer, as would the market, it is just not feasible. I will keep you informed. Kindest Regards

Richard Cooper-Holmes

On-Call Firefighters Rossington Fire Sta on is currently seeking applica ons for the posi on of On-Call Firefighter. An ‘on-call’ or ‘part-<me’ firefighter responds to the same fire and emergency calls using the same fire engines and equipment as a full-<me firefighter. Rossington Parish Council The Easter Eggstravaganza was well attended and after a few hiccups went well. We had some quite heavy rain at the beginning which meant that the climbing wall couldn’t be used and when the rain stopped the wind caused chaos for a while, but as the afternoon settled down and the wind dropped the climbing wall was used continuously. The weather couldn’t have been any more different from last year when it was 4oC and sunny, it was showers and overcast and warm for Easter. There was a queue all day for the face painters, even some of the adults had their face painted. The Rovers contingent was brilliant and Donny Dog turned up and entertained everyone. So, all in all a good day that brought the village together. I would like to thank the volunteers who turned up to help and all the Parish Councillors who went the extra yard to make this a successful day again. I will have to put the venue on next year’s leaflet, I forgot this year! The Rovers’ Kicks program is growing in success, it has moved to the Welfare on a Friday night and the football coaching is going down really well. They have started boxing sessions inside the youth club for boys and girls, it’s safe and good exercise. Both sessions are open to all it’s good for the heart and body. The planning for the newly renamed ‘Party in the Park’ is coming on; there are adverts in this magazine and elsewhere for participants in the Talent Show which will be part of the afternoon’s entertainment. If you feel you can entertain us please contact Barry or Anne on 01302 734195, we have a time slot that will allow a good number of performers to show us what they can do. Don’t forget, July 19th on the Welfare 10.00am to 11.30 pm. There will be a small charge of £2.00 on the gate for adults and £1.00 for kids. However we will be giving out free passes to the school children of Rossington via the schools. If your child goes to a school outside Rossington please contact Barry or Anne on the above number. Inside all the rides and attractions will then be free. Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) have published their new swimming schedule and they have kept their word and we have 25 hours per week swimming for the public. Rossington children will allowed to swim for 50p on a Saturday (having it free has been proved to drive customers away!) Kids from 18

ROSSINGTON TODAY

elsewhere in Doncaster will be charged full price. It’s nice to see that several people have been in to see Eric Pickles’ reply and they were appalled and shocked at what they had read. This is definitely not democracy in action! We have written to Caroline Flint to ask her to complain about our treatment. The Parish Council Meeting in April discussed the allowable bill payment methods recently introduced that brought us into the 21st century from the 19th! We can now pay by BACS and use plastic and PayPal. We discussed Queen Mary’s Road and the delay in resurfacing. It is now planned for August, I’m not holding my breath. We also nominated new representatives on the Memorial Hall management committee and the Miners Welfare committee. The Governance committee met and debated the workload of our Clerk and Assistant Clerk and with the retirement of Steve Merriman from doing the accounts etc. of Good Neighbours it has become necessary to increase their time. Barry will concentrate on the financial side and Anne will do the special work and the day to day admin. We also had a Planning meeting that saw plans for the Styrrup and for Go Green at Parrott’s Corner as well as a couple of extensions. There were no objections. The Projects Committee met to discuss the Party in the Park and spent what seemed like days, planning and sorting ‘A Song For Rossington’ out with Darts. It’s not all fully together, but it is getting there and will be a super day, hopefully enjoyed by all. All we need is some good weather for a change. We are sorting a new scheme for planting that will save us money in the long run and will still make Rossington look good. We are also negotiating for extra Christmas lights so that more areas of the village can enjoy them.

Garden View

How low can you grow? Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed 60’s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the potbought specimen under the shade of a tree). Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the 20

ROSSINGTON TODAY

pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads. Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal when displayed at waist height, you realise how wonderful these tiny creations are. Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stonewall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a

tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too.

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

First game first win. Rossington Hornets played their first game of rugby league in 6 years away at Haworth Park and were able to come away with the victory 36-22. Shaun Archer captained the side and lead from the front and really gave a captains effort splitting the home defence and keeping Haworth’s attacks at bay. Mentions must go to Josh Clegg who weighed in with two tries and Shane Southgate converting 6. We continue to train on a Wednesday evening at 7pm so if you fancy training please come down. Hopefully by the time you read this we will have had our first home win and will be looking forward to the trip to Moorends on the 31st. Fixtures for your diary 14/06 Home to Selby 28/06 Home to Haworth Park 12/07 Away to Hull Wyke 26/07 Home to Moorends 02/08 Away to Selby The Ladies Night was a great success and the feedback has been that the ladies that made the night really enjoyed themselves and a donation was made from money made on the night to a local child to help towards his treatment. A big thanks has to go to Christine Brooks and Jeanette Crisp for all their hard work that went into the preparation that made it a success. Little Stingers would like to thank Thick & Thin, Doncaster Driveways and Landscaping, Fiona’s Florists, Hev Reynolds, Rossington Miners Welfare, and everyone else who has supported the stingers in our start up. Little Stingers are continuing through the summer and will be down on the welfare from 11am on a Sunday.

Friends of Brodsworth Way Once again, our May coffee morning was fairly well attended and the next one will be on Thursday, 5th June, 9 until 11 in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion.

I have now left the estate and my friend and co-organiser, Cynthia, will also be moving house in the not too distant future, therefore, the coffee mornings are expected to cease after the one in July as we don't have anyone local to run them thereafter and we don't have the funds to take out public liability insurance. A decision concerning the funds in-hand has also yet to be decided. There has been a suggestion for those who would like to continue our coffee morning gatherings that we arrange to meet up on the first Thursday of the month, 10am, in the Holmescarr Centre cafe. As we have built up our social acquaintances over the last couple of years, this seems like a really good idea. I hope to tell you more on this in the July issue.

Rossington’s Danny ‘Maxi’ Hughes... ...is training hard this year as he gets closer to his dream of an English title. Following a recent win he moved to number 9 in the BoxRec rankings and he has 2 further fights during May. Until recently Maxi competed as a lightweight, however he has now made the move to super lightweight and this is where he sees his future.

"Evening of Clairvoyance"

For 5 weeks prior to a fight Maxi moves to a training camp in Wales – allowing him to train full time and ensure he is fully prepared. He is grateful to his very supportive employer (his Uncle) for allowing to do this and return to his job after each fight.

...with Clairvoyant and Medium

Lots of Maxi supporters are buying t-shirts and hoodies to help raise money for him. They also they had a collection which raised nearly a £1000, which helped him pay for his yearly medicals and to train for 5 weeks 100% before his fight, as he earns no money while he’s doing this. Maxi would also like to thank all the people who have donated and supported him on any level, he is truly grateful. He has had a dream since he was 15yrs old and he's getting closer and closer. He wants to share his glory with all who have helped him as he makes his family and all of Rossington proud. T
