Welcome to the

June 2019 edition

Today

“You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it” Allen Klein June already and the summer months are upon us. Exam season is in full swing and you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends. You will find details of many such events on these pages. Following the success of our Jess Glynne and Rita Ora ticket giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for Madness performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. I thought it was about time I updated my photo here in the magazine – people have been starting to notice that the previous image taken quite a few years ago was just a little out of date! Thank you very much to Di Fisher at The Photo Den for offering everyone present at a recent networking meeting the opportunity to have a new headshot taken. Di is an experienced Business Photographer, who also offers Photo Walks, Workshops and social events for those keen to improve their photography skills. Visit www.photoden.biz to find out more. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th June. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

Best wishes,

Cause for a Cuppa Hello from Cause for a Cuppa! Can you believe we are nearly half way through the year already? My son and I have this little thing going on as we both purchased something in December with the first payment in January with on 0% finance. We remind ourselves … “Hey, I actually own 1/2 of this computer this month.” community Community community That may sound aCommunity bit odd but it helps to keep track of the months!

what happened. Mum was angry too. Every now and again, subjects of conversation came up that reminded her of a marriage that didn’t work. I could actually see her blood pressure rise! But I do not remember mum speaking evil of my father even though she probably could have. Reality: I know there are situations all over the place. You may be a single mum because your partner cheated on you, etc. You may be angry, like my mum. But remember your goal is to rear a child who is well adjusted either to be a husband/father or wife/mother. Consider the damage it might do to you children of speaking evil of their father, even though he for a group that would work well as a team. Yes hurt you.

A good natural environment is important for the wellbeing and prosperity of all residents in the Doncaster region. For more than 70 years domestic and EU laws have aimed to sustain a wildlife rich natural world. In spite of this, the 2016 State of Nature report showed that 56% of species had declined across the UK between 1970 and 2013. In July 2018, the Prime Minister announced that the Government would introduce an Environmental Bill to underpin its 25 year environmental plan. It hopes to ' leave the environment on a better state than it found it'. All Wildlife Trusts, including Yorkshire welcome this recognition that new laws are needed to slow and reverse the decline of wildlife. The Wildlife Trusts, along with other organisations form the Greener UK Coalition. Together they are campaigning for a new Environmental Bill to benefit nature and our own health, wellbeing and prosperity. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust manages Potteric Carr Nature Reserve in Balby. Recently, staff and volunteers met Dame Rosie Winterton MP to discuss working towards any new Environmental Bill. If you are interested in promoting wildlife and enjoying nature you can visit Potteric Carr, Mallard Way, DN4 8DB which is open daily from 9an to 5pm. If you would like more information about the Wilder Yorkshire campaign you can find details on the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust website.

You may have seen our posters "Giving Prostate Cancer the Boot" which is our latest fundraising appeal for a much needed biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. We are so grateful to everyone who has already made a donation to this very worthwhile cause. If you are planning to hold a fundraising event or joining in an organised event on our behalf please do get in touch with us. We can provide you with leaflets, sponsor forms, T-shirts and include your photo taken at the event on our website. We will have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July from 1-5pm where we will be selling new and donated jewellery as well as lots of other goodies. Do come along - this is always a popular event and there is something for all ages. We are still collecting scarves, jewellery and other items for tombola/raffles. We do try and collect wherever possible, but alternatively you can drop them off at our office in Wood Street which is where some of the buses now stop. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), 2nd floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt. co.uk. Also if you would like to volunteer in any capacity you will be made very welcome. As always thank you to everyone who supports us - by helping our local hospitals this in turn benefits local people. SIMPLE RUNNING TIPS • Training without a plan can be demoralising. If you have a target in mind, then a plan will give you weekly targets that you tick off as you progress. Make your target realistic and achievable and set times frames to keep you focused. • Stick to it. Don’t be tempted to do more than the plan suggests just because you are feeling good. The plan will have been put together to ensure you improve slowly but steadily in a safe manner.

• Don’t be tempted to do too much initially. While your early enthusiasm might make you feel like you want to get into your training in a big way from day one, make sure you go with what your plan tells you. Too much too soon can to lead to injury.

• Don’t lose sight of your goal! Don’t let bad days affect your overall programme. One of the best pieces of advice is to be consistent! • Build your training into a regular routine. Keep a set time for your training to ensure you do it. However, having a routine does not mean doing the same distance session all the time, as if you do that you won’t make any progress. • Keep reviewing your training diary as often it is easier to see what is working and what isn’t when we review it.

LIFESTYLE

“Why am I always tired?” I noticed that question is the 4th most asked on Google beginning with the word “why”.

Sure you can scrape by on less, but you increase your chances of many illnesses and the number one way to stop feeling like you need more sleep, is to get more sleep!

When you consider all the possible questions we could ask, it shows just how large a problem a lack of energy is for a large chunk of the population.

2 – Nutrition – Unhealthy diet means an unhealthy gut which creates discomfort and disturbs our sleep as well as sucks out energy.

Isn’t that such a shame, isn’t that such a waste?!

Cut back on the things you know you should be consuming less of and ensure you get your 5 a day of fruit/veg as well as sufficient water to make some immediate impact.

We get around 70 (ish) years on the planet (hopefully) and instead of enthusiastically seeking our potential the majority drag themselves through their “best” years. So let’s take a look about some basics you can take control of today to increase your energy and inject more enthusiasm into your life. 1 – Common sense is often the least common action, so let’s start there… get some sleep! Sure, there are times in your life when burning the candle at both ends is unavoidable, the arrival of a baby into your life for example. But these should be temporary and every single respectable sleep expert agrees that human beings require 7-8 hours unbroken sleep to function at their best. The late night channel hopping and web browsing is not pouring anything useful into our lives, so cut that out and set a more suitable bedtime.

14

3 – Exercise/Activity – Being active increases energy, decreases stress, elevates mood and releases chemicals in our body that allow better rest. Pick an activity you enjoy, is suitable for your fitness level and start to reap the rewards within a matter of weeks, sometimes days. 4 – Life Plan – The above 3 improvements can make a big impact for sure. But even with those ticked off your list, nothing saps your energy like a long-standing problem hanging over you. Lack of finances, relationship problems, anxiety, stress from work, lack of goals to strive for…these all consume our thoughts, suck out our energy and steal our enthusiasm. So let’s get practical. What is the biggest issue on your mind right now that is causing you to feel uneasy, restless of stressed?

What is the first step you could take today to begin solving this? It could be creating a plan to progress or change your career, perhaps an important conversation with someone you’ve been meaning to have, maybe seek guidance from a financial planner, go to the doctors with a medical issue you’ve been ignoring. Only you know what it is and chances are the more you resist seeking the solution, the more you need it. Imagine yourself a month from now. Getting enough deep sleep, eating better, more active, solutions for the major problems in your life found, working towards goals that inspire you and feeling re-energised, focused, fit, healthy! It’s a happy thought isn’t it and it can absolutely become a reality, but only if you choose to make it that way by taking action, the sooner the better. As always, go create a day and life that counts, have more desires that excuses.

KITCHEN MAKEOVERS BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS! Now celebrating its first anniversary, Dream Doors based at Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre in Armthorpe offers kitchen makeovers and redesigns at less than half the cost of a full kitchen refit. Owned and managed by husband and wife team Jerry and Emma Innesbeer, along with the Showroom Manager – Abi Sheppard, Dream Doors has gained an impeccable reputation for transforming old and tired looking kitchens by simply replacing and upgrading the constituent parts. This has proved to be a more cost-effective option compared with ripping the entire kitchen out and starting from scratch. Using the highest quality materials with ‘in vogue’ colours such as cashmere, grey and copper, kitchens can be metamorphosed into stunning and contemporary designs. Cupboards, drawer fronts, worktops, taps, floor tiles and appliances can all be exchanged and even moved to create bespoke kitchens to suit individual tastes and preferences. Quartz overlays are very much sought after nowadays, proving to be a very practical and money saving option. “The kitchen is probably the most important room in the whole house” said Jerry. “At Dream Doors we can install a fresh new kitchen within 48 hours, replacing the doors and worksurfaces for a fraction of the cost of a full re-fit. Kitchen makeovers are popular all over the UK and I’m delighted to say that our modern and welcoming Armthorpe showroom has become a flagship one for the Dream Doors franchise. A ‘Checkatrade’ rating of 9.81 from 32 reviews certainly reinforces our high standing”. Jerry and Abi pride themselves on offering the highest professional

20

standards of personal service. Abi runs the showroom and undertakes the initial customer consultation, whilst Jerry project manages every job from home visit and original design to final installation. They also benefit from having the back up and support of a national organisation, which knows the industry inside out. “The interest in kitchen makeovers shows no sign of abating” said Abi. “People want lovely kitchens they can be proud of, but do not want the cost and hassle of a full re-fit. We offer a wide range of styles, as well as many appliances and white goods, so are able to offer customers a memorable kitchen from a simple door swap, to a full replacement kitchen. Our highlyexperienced fitting team can cope with any job – however big or small!” As well as kitchen makeovers, Dream Doors can also transform any bedroom to suit individual needs and requirements. Hello Everyone, I hope when everyone is reading this the sun has decided to visit us, our dogs hate the rain, and we all feel so much better when the sun shines.

LOTTIE

We are all looking forward to the Mayflower Ball and hope that we raise lots of money, as well as having an amazing time with everyone that bought tickets to join us on the evening. We now have an appeal for a beautiful little dog that I have been helping to take care of. She is so sweet and only hope that the surgery planned is able to go ahead and is successful. If you can help by donating even a small amount that would be amazing. We need a phenomenal amount of money to help her. Please read on. Lottie’s Appeal. Soon after arriving with us, Lottie’s carers noticed large growths inside both of her ears. During further investigations by the vets, they could see that the growths are completely blocking her ear canals, leaving her in great pain and unable to hear.

Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:

Blue Male 10 Mths May 2019 Possibly Possibly Older

Blue has had to come into Mayflower’s care as his owner was allergic to him and he was making her asthma worse. He is new in and finding life a little hard at the moment. As a previous housecat its very scary here with all the new smells and sounds but, given time, he will soon come round. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. Although he has been a housecat so far he is young enough possibly enjoy exploring a secure garden in his new home. He hasn’t lived with another cat but initial introductions have been positive so fingers crossed that he will find a feline friend to get up to mischief with ! He hasn’t met any dogs so we are unsure how he will react. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

We will never know how long she has been suffering like this, but we do know that with your support we will do our very best to make sure it won’t be for much longer. Lottie has already started on much needed pain relief to help her feel more comfortable and she is travelling to see a specialist. The operation alone to remove the growths has been quoted at around £4,500 and that’s not including the consultations fees or any medication that may be needed. Purse strings are already stretched near to breaking but we can’t let this lovely girl suffer like this. Please support us as we get her out of pain and let her hear, maybe for the first time. If you would like to help towards Lottie’s operation you can do so by one of the following options. Cash or a cheque can be handed into reception, a cheque in the post to Narrow Lane, Bawtry, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN10 6QJ or donations can be sent by PayPal info@mayflowersanctuary.co.uk Please make a note with donations to Lottie Appeal. Even a small amount would make such a difference towards Lottie’s care. Many thanks for reading this. We will look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes

Margaret Godley

Murphy Male 12 Years Jan 2019 Possibly Possibly Older

Hunter has come into our care as his previous owner was moving and unable to take him with her. He has lived in a flat since he was a kitten and at 12 years old we feel that he is too old now to adjust to going outside. Therefore he must remain safely indoors in his new home. Hunter found life here very difficult at first and hid under his blanket for days. Gradually, as his confidence grew, he started to creep out to see what was going on. He is now confident enough to sit on his scratchpost watching the world go by although he can still be spooked easily. Once he gets to know you, he’s a fussy little chap and can be quite vocal around dinner time. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. He has previously lived with another cat but hasn’t been confident enough to make any feline friends yet. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

Make a Property Trust Will How do they work?

For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor.

All for

£300 inc VAT*

We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse/partner a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse/partner need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/partner remarry or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. On Wednesday 8th June, Bishop Peter, the Bishop of Doncaster visited our school. He had heard about how the school had turned itself around and wanted to congratulate the staff and children on all of their hard work. Bishop Peter was welcomed by members of the senior leadership team, our RE leader and representatives from our Governing Body. Initially, he met with representatives from the school to talk about the school journey. Following this, he visited each classroom to learn about how the school ensures the progression of our RE curriculum across the whole school. He visited our reflection spaces and was introduced to our prayer boxes. In each class, the children welcomed the Bishop and talked about their learning. Our Year 5, Young Leaders met with the Bishop to interview him. These are some of the questions: What did you do to become a bishop? 36 years ago I became a priest, after that I did lots of other jobs such as director of music, then arch deacon and then a bishop. How many churches do you look after? I don’t look after one church as I look after all of them. I don’t have a main church as I focus on all the churches. Is it a big responsibility being a Bishop? Does it put pressure on you? It can put pressure on me sometimes but other times not. What are your thoughts on Halloween? I think it is a time to have fun and enjoy yourselves. I think that some people don’t know the real meaning. I would like everyone to celebrate the nice things as it is not meant to be scary. Has this always been your dream job? No, my dream job would have been a Formula 1 racing driver and if I wasn’t a Bishop then I would have been a chef. However, I love being a Bishop. Bishop Peter was very impressed with the school and the hard work from all the children and staff. We would like to thank Bishop Peter for visiting our school and sharing God’s love with us.

Hello Rossington Residents RPC Facebook Page Follow us on our Facebook Page Rossington Parish Council or our website: www.rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk Easter Eggstravaganza – 11 am to 3 pm on Sunday 21 April 2019 The feedback from everyone for this year’s event was really positive, even the weather was kind to us. Children really enjoyed the huge bouncy castles and rides. The face painters were a great success with a queue throughout. The parish BBQ was busy as were all the stalls. Three charity stalls raised much needed cash to support local children and young people. Thank you to all those who joined us on Easter Sunday. If you have any ideas on how we can improve the event for next Easter Sunday contact the Clerk. 3-Day Summer Festival – Showcase Local Young Talent - 5th, 6th & 7th July I think this year’s Summer Festival is going to be even bigger and better than last year. Wow! There you have it. Two years in planning, making and creating which culminated in a Grand Parade that captured lots of imagination. More community groups and schools took part in the crafts this year than for our previous 2 parades and the feedback was more than we would have dared hope for. It was colourful and engaging on a grey day. The rain held off for us, and the choir and orchestra spent longer outside the Royal Residential Home to entertain the residents this time. People recorded that it reminded them of the May Day parades of their youth, and we really do hope that we are building a heritage for parades that will give memories for the future generation. A big thank you to all of those making things, some of whom were led by Kate our artist from Right up our Street who gets our thanks too. Right up our Street helped to fund the costumes and large pieces that were in the parade, and we achieved a grant from the National Lottery too that helped greatly. It costs a lot of money to stage this kind of event.

Sharon Richards’ Singing School led the parade again and St Michael’s Orchestra were part of the middle section. A second appearance of the Samba Band from Hebden Bridge added to both these Rossington musical groups. You will have seen the Army Cadets in the Parade and the Guides will hopefully be in the next one. Well done to all the community groups who got involved and made up the bulk of those walking in their costumes in the Parade. A big thank you must go to Sue of Awesome Faces who was going for an Olympic medal in face painting! Her hands and paintbrushes were a blur of activity. Finally, a thank you to the committee of the Grand Parade who met monthly to ensure the progress and activity that happened along the way. We need more of you to join the team so that we can head to 2021 with a new theme, more energy and ideas, so please check out the Grand Parade Facebook page to see when we are next meeting. The children in the parade and watching it really enjoyed it, so the hard work it involved was well worth it. Come and help them enjoy the next one.

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS

RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

The May Day Parade on 6 May was great for the village. Going from the Holmescarr Centre around Queen Mary, West End Land and onto the Welfare the costumes were brilliant – all handmade and the choir and samba band all added to the carnival atmosphere. Residents of all ages took part who had made their costumes themselves and a big thank you to the Parade organisers who put months of work into making the event such a success. We have provided a few updates about the work we are involved in but we don’t have enough space to include everything so please do contact us if you want to discuss anything that we have mentioned, or something that isn’t included and you think it should be. Heatherfield Crescent and problems around the Iport The problems around the Iport continue and DMBC’s enforcement team are continuing to resolve the situation. I have been asked whether Heatherfield Crescent has been formally adopted by Doncaster Council and therefore responsible for maintaining the area. It has been adopted but only for a very short stretch of road and the discussions between the council and the developer are still ongoing. The process of adopting new roads is a long and complicated process and after asking questions about this on behalf of residents, we have learned that a period of time has to have passed once the development is used before inspection and therefore adoption can take place. If this is affecting you – please do get in touch and we can provide more information. Bankwood Lane Residents continue to be affected by the lorry park on Bankwood Lane. We met with the planning officer recently to discuss progress and we asked for residents in the area to be asked for their opinions before any decisions are made. If residents want to find out more, please do get in touch. University Technical College A new way of learning is coming to Doncaster for 13-19 years old and will be in the Town Centre near Cast and Civic Offices. Information events are being held to explain how they will be teaching technical and scientific subjects in a whole new way and are educating the inventors, scientists and engineers and technicians of tomorrow. UTCs are smaller than traditional secondary schools, are academies, they are not selective and don’t charge fees. For more information contact 01302 976515 or contact doncasterutc.co.uk

DHL As reported in the last update, DHL lorries are in the main sticking to the routing agreement that they avoid Rossington but we are aware that some contractor lorries are not adhering to the agreement. We are working with planning officers and the manager at DHL to resolve this. Due to the work by Yorkshire water on West End Lane this has resulted in lorries having to come through the village for a few weeks. We share residents’ concerns that when the plans were developed for the IPort and new houses the utility companies didn’t use the opportunity when construction was taking place to improve their services rather than inconveniencing many residents as they have done in May. Swimming pool Many residents value having a swimming pool in the village. Currently, Doncaster Council’s Leisure Services are investigating options to review the provision of a pool for Rossington which includes potential of a new build as well as update of the existing facility. Summer Holiday Activities for Children – coming again to Rossington Rossington has again been chosen as one of the areas in Doncaster that will be having activities for children and young people as we have had in the village since 2015. Most of the activities are provided by groups from the village with some additional activities from Doncaster wide groups. If you run a group and provide activities already, do get in touch so that you can get involved in the meetings where the community groups come together to plan the activities for the summer Do you live on the Radburn Estate? – Next meeting is 12 June at 3pm There is only one Tenants and Residents group left in the village now and Dave and Shirley who run it continue to do a great job. They meet on 2nd Wednesday of every month from 3pm at The Ragusa centre on Radburn road. All residents and tenants are welcome to attend and it’s a chance to ask questions and raise concerns. You will be made very welcome Next surgery Friday 14 June from 1230-2pm at the café in Holmescarr Centre and from 2. 15 -4 at Miners Welfare on West End Lane. From July we will be doing some surgeries in different venues and at different times and will be advertised in this update. Please get in touch with us if we can assist in any way. Please don’t wait for our surgeries, we can meet you anytime in Rossington.
