This month we celebrate Today Publications 13th birthday! Tickhill Today was the ďŹ rst magazine and during the ďŹ rst week of March 2005, we delivered the ďŹ rst issue to homes across Tickhill and nervously awaited a reaction. Thirteen may be considered unlucky by some, but I feel very lucky to have enjoyed the last 13 years continuing to distribute magazines each month in Tickhill, and then adding Rossington in 2006, Bawtry in 2007, Harworth & Bircotes in 2011, Bessacarr & Cantley in 2013 and most recently DN2. Long may they all continue. A magazine for the expanding Plantation area of Balby is in the pipeline for 2018, so watch this space, or get in touch if you think you would like to be in that magazine! As always, if you contact someone advertising within these pages, do tell them where you found them. Whether that be a business advertising products or services, or a group, charity or organisation promoting their meetings, activities or events. Without the advertisers and community contributors these magazines would not exist, and would not be helping our local communities to thrive. The April issue will be delivered to you late March, just ahead of Easter. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th March. Thank you. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.
Best wishes,
Paula x

ST MICHAEL’S GO GRIM AT ‘GRIMM AND CO’. On the week beginning 22nd January, Year 3 and 4 went to Grimm & Co. which is a marvellous, magical place in the centre of Rotherham. Our Year 3 and 4 children would like to tell you all about their experience. When we arrived, we met Rebecca and Sarah who were good-natured and kind-hearted. While we were there, we wrote our very own stories. Firstly, we had a bit of a look around but then we had to look at the shelf as there ZDV VRPHWKLQJ RXW RI SODFH DQG ZH KDG WR Č´ [ it back into place. We saw all of these potion bottles and a big, long green beanstalk that Jack planted in his garden. Sarah asked us to tidy up the bookcase but all of a sudden one of the shelves opened up into a warm, cosy room. The secret door led to a place called ‘The Imagination Gym’ where we used something called a ‘brain unclogger’. We used this on our teachers because they were all over 13 years old! Rebecca told us the story of Graham Grimm and how his wife Griselda Grimm who liked new ideas for stories. We all made up our own characters and decided on two main characters. We made up an amazing story together, the story had twists and turns, adventure and suspense. Then we got into groups and we wrote the beginning and middle together with our mentor. After that, we worked independently to write our 6

Cause for a Cuppa Good morning/afternoon/evening! (Take your pick.) This has been a tough winter. I KRSH ZH KDYH DOO Č´ QLVKHG ZLWK WKLV QDVW\ Čľ X that has gone round the village at least once. I was laid up for a week which was not near as bad as I’ve heard from others. To be honest, I’m ready for the winter of 2017/18 to be over. On that note, have you ever hear of Groundhog Day in the States? Yes, it’s one of those weird American things ‌ oddly enough brought over by the Dutch. Apparently if a groundhog (a large guinea pig looking animal) comes out of his hole on 2 Feb and sees his shadow, that means 6 more weeks of winter. The groundhog I had always heard about lives in Pennsylvania and there is a big hoopla every 2 February about this. As this is a 132 year tradition, I reckon there has been a passing of the groundhog baton through the generations. I just looked it up and on 2 Feb this year, he saw his shadow so sadly this means 6 more weeks of winter ‌ in the States anyway. Believe it or not, historically the groundhog has been right about 39% of the time. Really!? I think WKH\ FRXOG GR EHWWHU E\ Čľ LSSLQJ D FRLQ $W DQ\ UDWH let’s hope they keep the cold weather over there, shall we?! I thought today we carry on with our chat about “loveâ€? along with what is happening on 1 April. No, I’m not talking about April Fool’s Day ‌ but rather Easter. Yes, this year they happen to both occupy the same box on the calendar. When you think of love, what comes to mind? Hearts? Flowers? Walks down a sunset lit beach? Sex? (Oh no! The Pastor said what?! Absolutely.) Well, maybe all those and then some. I realise it all depends upon context. Last month we took at a peek at what is the classic

We said it doesn’t give D GHČ´ QLWLRQ RI ORYH EXW UDWKHU D GHVFULSWLRQ $V WKH April Rossington Today will not make it to homes until after the fact, I thought we could look at love in the context of Easter. I heard of a story from just 2 years ago. A father and 10 year old daughter were collecting rocks along a train track. (Not very clever, but that’s beside the point.) The father suddenly heard the sound of an oncoming train coming upon them at full speed with 4 engines and 95 cars full of coal. Undoubtedly he was certain there would have been plenty of time to clear the tracks and wait for the train to pass. However his 10 year old got stuck in one of the rails. He frantically worked to free her. He was able to do that and push her over and into a creek. Tragically he did not have time to escape himself. He was killed instantly. The Bible makes two statements. God is love (1 John 4:8). Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). The father’s love for his daughter was shown in his ZLOOLQJQHVV WR VDFULČ´ FH KLV RZQ OLIH LQ RUGHU WR VDYH KLV daughter. I would like to think that, given the same circumstance, I would do the same and I imagine you would too. The event of Jesus dying on the cross is probably familiar territory to people. We may struggle to understand why, etc. Actually we can get our head around someone being willing to give their life for their child. We might struggle to understand how someone would be willing to do this for a mate ‌ but, yeah, ok ‌ I’ll go along with it. The context of Jesus’ comment (John 15:13 from above) deals with those early followers. %XW OHWȇV QRW OHDYH RÎ? Appreciate your Bathroom Our bathrooms are one of the busiest rooms used in the home. Whether this is for showering, bathing or pampering, our bathrooms can often become tired due to the amount of use they get on a daily basis. With a small amount of time and effort you will be able to appreciate your bathroom just that little bit more and put some love back into the room. Imagine entering your bathroom to see neatly folded towels on the hand rail, clean and clear surfaces with just a few of your beauty products by the sink. Candles on the windowsill and essential oils by the bathtub awaiting your next soak in the tub. If this image is far from the reality of how your bathroom currently looks perhaps it’s time to have a fresh start! To appreciate your bathroom more, you need to start with the décor. It is no good if your bathroom appears dull and lifeless with tiles that have seen better days, peeling paint and sealant, and limescale build up clouding the shower door. Start with a deep clean, there are lots of products now that can help with discoloured grout and limescale build up if these are issues in your bathroom.

What are we doing this year? We’ve been organising and typing this month, so we have photos for the Library box, and the task of getting more uploads done has borne fruit. We found a photo of a drawing of what the Methodist Church was designed to look like and it was very grand with a steeple. We wonder if it was a rejected design or if there was insufficient funding to complete it. Does anyone know? We’d like to hear.

All of the verse given to us by the relatives of Albert Horsman is now on the website. He wrote under the alias of Marshal Bronte and many of his pieces appeared in The Villager, the newspaper that was published over 20 years ago. Albert’s family hoped to find us a photo to add to the pieces but sadly, have not been able to locate one. If you remember Albert, and have a photo of him, I’m sure they would be as grateful as we would be to see it so that we can upload that too. Some of the verse is about his memories of Rossington, but other pieces are general musings as poets do, and our typist found she was smiling a lot to read them as she typed. The Family History group is now set up and meets fortnightly on Tuesdays in the Holmescarr cafĂŠ at 3 pm. We hope to get some information from the members of that group to add to our pages. Ring the number below to hear when the next meeting is scheduled. Have you got anything – photos or stories – past and present - that you would like to share on the website or appear in the Library? We would love to hear from more of you who have memories that are on tape or are written so that they can go on record. If you have not got that far, we can take recordings of those memories. Your library is run by an enthusiastic and friendly team of volunteers, ready to be of assistance to you should you require it. Anyone who feels that they would like to join the team are always welcome to come along and see what is involved. We are always looking for new members for our team. Unlike the ‘considered’ opinion of a DMBC councillor who said that all they do in libraries is stamp books, there is a lot more to it than many people think. Possibly, after a visit you may want to volunteer and join the team. You would be made very welcome.
Library members have access to a great range of services and information such as: • Free three week book loan • Renew and request books • Two hours Free computer and internet access • 24/7 access to Library Services online • Free E-Book and audio book downloads • Free Music Downloads (3 tracks per week) • Free weekly loan of children’s ‘Free Loan’ DVD’s To join the library just drop in and ask to become a member. You can take away an application form to complete, or you can be made a member there and then! You will need to have some identification (I.D.) with you. Various types of I.D. are acceptable such as official letter, utility bill, bank statement, driving licence etc. as these items will have both your name and current address on them. A passport is not acceptable as it does not have your address on it. One of the benefits of being a member of your library is that you can borrow books from any library within the auspices of DMBC and return them to any other convenient for you, DMBC library. It will be discharged from your account and returned to the library of origin.

Already hit a major stumbling EORFN ZLWK \RXU 1HZ <HDU ȴ WQHVV resolutions? Here are 5 tips to get back on track from local physiotherapist and runner, Jenny Blizard Change your attitude to exercise. See exercise as the norm, just like going to work, that way you will instill positive associations with exercise rather than negative, and reap the rewards. New activities take around 21 days to become a habit but it takes considerably longer, 6 months to a year for exercise to become part of being you. Accept this and work towards a goal longer term but plan little goals along the way.

If you are new to exercise or had a break and starting back, there is nothing worse than being too sore for days on end as you have overdone it on your first session, or worse picked up an injury. Start small and build up. Feel that you have no time for exercise? The No. 1 time waster now is social media, think how much exercise you could do when you put your phone down! Make sure you look after the other bits that relate to exercise such as relaxation, sleep, hydration and good nutrition. It is surprising how these factors can either motivate or de-motivate you. Don’t be too rigid in your plans, make room for adjustments along the way and accept that this is pretty normal for a new exercise routine. Take a day off if tired and seek help early with any niggles.

By Rachel Leverton
Fertile Ground This month the days get longer and the sun gets stronger...we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises.
Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields. The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general-purpose fertiliser.
Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertiliser.
A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium.
Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertiliser. All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact, the basics are quite simple.
There are other macro-nutrients: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium and sulphur, which should be present in any good general-purpose fertiliser.
NPK - This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for:
Plants also need micro-nutrients: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum.
N - Nitrogen
Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilisers which contain vitamins, proteins and fats.
P - Phosphorous K - Potassium Together these are known as the macronutrients and each of them has its own use. Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-theground parts of the plants.
So, don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC..or rather NPK!
Phosphorous promotes strong roots. 34 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Update from Councillor
Alison Harper Hello Rossington Residents. It’s February and the Parish Council is really busy. Since Doncaster Council ended all youth provision in Rossington on 31 July 2017, the Parish Council has been looking into how we can offer young people a service. We are currently undertaking a feasibility study into one option of taking on the youth club building next to the swimming baths and/or another building in the village. We have struggled to get access to all the rooms in the youth club to enable a condition survey to be done but hopefully by my next report we will have the results. We are also doing a consultation exercise with young people to find out what they would like from a youth club, where they would like the club to be, what activities they’d like to get involved in, what equipment they’d need and so on. Watch out on our Facebook page and Website if you’d like to have a say. The results of all of this will be going into our Business Plan. Watch this space! As part of our Neighbourhood Plan, the Parish Council has looked at the potential for the village centre shopping areas. With an external grant (so at no cost to residents) a company called AECOM visited Rossington and are developing a potential master plan that will be included in Rossington’s Neighbourhood Plan. Once this is in the Plan and the Plan has been adopted by Rossington residents, Doncaster Council will have to take into account the contents of our Neighbourhood Plan during all new developments in the village. On 9 January 2018 Neil Firth, Head of Service for Major Projects and Investment for Doncaster Council attended the Parish Council meeting to give an update on Junction 3 of the M18. They are working with Highways England to find a solution to the large 40 ROSSINGTON TODAY
queues on the northbound slip road and the difficulty traffic is having exiting the M18 southbound onto the roundabout due to the large volume of traffic on the circulatory with there not being any traffic lights at this point. Due to an unsuccessful bid to the National Productivity Infrastructure Fund future work will have to be phased in. On 29 January 2018 the Parish Council met with AWS Landscaping to discuss the planting of the flower beds in Rossington. We want to make sure we don’t have the disaster that was last year. In the past the beds have been planted each year with summer flowering plants. This year we will be planting perennials along with summer flowers. As the perennials become more established we can look at what plants would complement them best for future years. On 30 January 2018 the Parish Council held a meeting with representatives from Harworth Estates with 26 members of the public in attendance. This was a very informative meeting where Duncan and Chris brought along lots of colourful maps to update and inform us on the current and future housing developments, the development of the country park on the former pit site, the cemetery car park, issues of flooding in Holmescarr Wood, the siting of the Miners Wheel, the siting of the Lidl store, play areas, GP Surgery and the Primary School. For more details on this meeting visit our Facebook page or our website www.rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk. Don’t forget our Easter Eggstravaganza on Easter Sunday, 1 April 2018 from 11 am to 3 pm at Brodsworth Way Pavilion. Entrance is FREE. There are two small fairground rides, bouncy castle, bungee run, 3 obstacle courses and a combi unit all of which are FREE. There are also Go Karts, BBQ, Donut stall, Mexican Food, sweet stall, Arks and Craft activities, Nature Safari wild animals, ice-cream van, other stalls plus hot and cold drinks. Face painting is just £1. Children up to 11 get a FREE Easter Bunny so don’t be late and please bring the sunshine with you! Alison Harper become the sole and main contractor for the scheme which will complete the direct link to Doncaster Sheffield Airport from Junction 3 of the M18. As part of the agreement Tarmac will take on all contractor liability and responsibility for the Doncaster Council sponsored scheme. Work on site is continuing and as delays have been minimised they are still expecting the scheme to be completed by April 2018. Doncaster Council is working with Tarmac and Price Waterhouse Cooper to ensure the Carillion staff, self-employed workers, sub-contractors and suppliers for the project are retained wherever possible. The Great Yorkshire Way is driving jobs and growth for Doncaster and the wider region, so it is tremendous news that they have found a solution to ensure its timely completion.

OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS During the month of March supporters of Target Ovarian Cancer try in various ways to make women more aware of the signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer.
THE GRAND PARADE We are planning for the long term – WKH QH[W *UDQG 3DUDGH LQ Č‚ DQG we have key issues: fund-raising to make it better than last year’s, and storage space for the pieces we will create between now and the date we show you what those pieces have built towards. The fund-raising will happen along the way, but we will always ensure that the community is able to participate in our events at best value. Perhaps that same community can advise us of a safe, secure, damp-proof space that we can use for storing the pieces we all make. We would like to keep them in Rossington if we can. Can you help? We will be helping our partners, Right up our Street, to present the Rossington part of the Doves of Doncaster event. Two doves have been placed in the library and there will be workshops and poetry events around the town, including Rossington, to focus on the end of the First World War. Go along and have a look in the library and watch out for the event that is local to us. We look forward to seeing you at our events, and your joining us to help with our projects. This cruel cancer takes the lives of approx. 11 women in the U.K. every day. It is often called the silent killer because it is often diagnosed it its advanced stage. Awareness of the symptoms among women in very low with only 3 out of 10 women been able to correctly name any symptoms, and some women believing falsely that their regular smear test detect this type of cancer. Before 2013 I was one of those women who could not name any symptoms and believed that having had a hysterectomy it would not happen to me – how wrong I was. Now I try to make sure that others are better informed. The symptoms to look out for are :Persistent Bloating round your tummy. Pelvic or abdominal pain. 'LÉ? FXOW\ HDWLQJ RU IHHOLQJ IXOO TXLFNO\ Needing to pass water more often. If you experience any of these symptoms, keep a diary of how regular they are and visit your G.P. also, be aware of your family history this disease can be hereditary. Thank you for reading this article, please pass the information on to your friends, make them aware of this disease. It is only through making people aware of the symptoms that this cancer can be caught in its early stages and more people can be cured. Carole Hughes

Update from Councillors
Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper
Your DMBC Councillors Bankwood Lane It was no surprise at the last Parish Council meeting which we attended that residents from the Bankwood Lane estate vented their frustration at the lack of progress on the proposed new access road to the industrial estate. When it first came to our attention that Attero were ‘stepping’ up to the mark in respect of the provision of a new link road into the estate, a timescale of 4 weeks was being muted. Our reaction to that when we first heard of it was that such a period in which to even deliver the planning application was simply impossible let alone get it through the planning system and onto the construction stage. Following the concerns raised, and justifiably so at the last meeting, an update on the current situation has now been received. Attero have now agreed to carry out more cleaning of their vehicles, additional litter picks and their drivers have been instructed to be more considerate regarding the noise which they generate. It is possible with considerate driving to reduce this impact. The Planning Application for the new road is to be submitted by the end of February and DMBC will be writing to residents to advise them of this progress. Whilst residents are being advised that this is happening in February, the application still has hurdles to get by but getting it into the system is a major step forward. We recognise that it has been far too long that residents have had to put up with this but rest assured we are doing everything we can. DHL Lorries through the village. Despite ongoing meetings on the problem with DHL lorries and its contractors passing through the village in direct contravention of an agreed planning condition, we are no further forward. It is now our opinion that they are ignoring our requests as the management cannot even control the action of its own drivers let alone its contractors. Only recently Mick secured the registration numbers of two lorries en-route to DHL via the village. DHL have insulted our intelligence further by erecting a sign at the bottom of Common Lane directing its lorries coming from the village in their direction onto Common Lane. This is tantamount to their managers condoning the action of their drivers. Mick has another meeting with the DHL management in a week or so but in the meantime, we have asked that DMBC officers scrutinise the existing Planning Permissions applicable to DHL’s site to determine if it is still fit for purpose. In addition to this we have also asked that they start to work on any legal recourse that this authority may have against their contravention of the current routing agreement. 44 ROSSINGTON TODAY
We have asked that any lorry identified three times passing through the village be prevented from coming to their depot at any other time in the future. To this end we are asking for volunteers particular from those residents who live along the Stripe Road route to assist us in taking registration numbers, dates and times and if possible photographs. Mick can be contacted on the email listed at the end of this article if anyone wishes to assist us. The possibility of installing a camera at the end of Common Lane is now very much to the forefront of our proposed future actions and this may well come to fruition. If DHL cannot control the actions of their drivers and contractors, perhaps DMBC can help them in the right direction in their efforts to be good neighbours to the residents of this village. Hesley Road. Residents of Hesley Road will recall that a consultation was held last year by St Leger Homes on the problem of residential parking. We are pleased to inform Residents that the construction of the proposed parking bays is due to commence on 12th February. Hopefully, this will address and resolve some of the long-standing issues associated with the parking difficulties on that part of the estate. We appreciate that this work will be well underway by the time you read this article but it has only just come to our attention that this scheme is being progressed. Councillors Surgery Due to Micks busy schedule in the village, he is now going to be available every Friday. If you wish to meet with him in person just ring or email him prior to Fridays and he will make himself available. He will continue to hold his surgery on the second Friday of every month from 12.30-2.00pm at the café in the Holmescarr Centre and 2.30 – 3.30 at The Welfare Rachael Tel: 07976896563 Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Mick Tel: 07758089737 Email: mick.cooper@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading our update – please don’t hesitate to get in touch and please don’t wait for our surgeries – we are happy to meet with you at any time, either visiting you at home or in a community venue.
