elcome to the March edition of ROSSINGTON TODAY. TODAY
This month we are celebrating Rossington Today’s 6th Birthday! The magazine has evolved considerably over those 6 years. Thank you to everyone who has supported it, and helped it to grow to what it is now. In the early days the magazine was delivered to just 3000 homes in the village, whereas now it should be reaching most people each month. If you know someone who isn’t getting their own copy through their door, or yours isn’t arriving very early in the month to which it relates please let me know, preferably by an email stating the address in question. Thank you. The next edition will be distributed to you from 24th March. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 9th March.
Best Wishes, Paula

Rossington Councillor's Update The White Rose Way Bridge is now in place only a few weeks late and the new road can be completed. I mention this because the widening of White Rose Way is integral to the building of the FARRRS link road that will open up our village and bring much needed jobs The FARRRS public consultation took place at the Holmescarr centre and was a great success, over 130 people attended. It is hoped that progress on the new road is made as quickly as possible. Rossington really does need this road. The Library on McConnell has closed and will reopen at Holmescarr on the 20 th of March in a temporary room. Building work is underway to give it its’ final home. The Holmescarr library will have all the facilities of the old. There will be a computer station with twelve places to complement the four in the Opportunity Centre. We are still looking for volunteers to help maximize its' opening hours. Please contact Sally on 865559 if you would like to help. Training will be given. Crime and Anti-Social Behavior are down again, but there has been some ASB in the Radburn Road area and this will be targeted by both police and the Council Neighbourhood staff. Several warning notices were issued on Stripe Road for speeding and this will be looked at again. The Bankwood area is going to be the focus of heightened awareness above that already in place. The area is in much need of tidying up in more ways than one. The Payback team has cleaned and painted the public toilets on the market place. They should be much ‘friendlier’ to use. The Payback team are working hard, under the supervision of Steve Lelew of the Neighbourhood team in creating the sensory garden, with some unusual and creative ideas. By the time this is published the Council budget should have been published. This has been difficult this year with another £30 million’s of government cuts, but hopefully the impact has been minimized. This is, of course, only year two of four years of government cuts and it gets more difficult every year. The Council tax will have been set at 0% increase, the government instruction, however this will make future years more difficult. Section 106 moneys will be use to improve the new play area at the Welfare installing two more pieces of equipment and extra skate park facilities. The play area at the back of the doctor’s surgery and the fire station on West End Lane will have a new goal post and a basketball net. The Welfare fencing will be renewed to improve security. A linear toddler’s play area will be built on the land at the back of St. Michael’s School. And finally, a number of benches and picnic table will be sited around the village.
Richard Cooper-Holmes Your Labour Councillor

ause for a Cuppa Thank you for coming by for our cuppa this month. I hope that in some small way, you have gained from our times together. Today (being the BIG snow in Rossington), after lumbering down a hill on a sledge with my son, “family” came to mind. The 18th of March is Mothering Sunday. This continues a series of “1st”s I have had to face since Mum passed away last year. Last October in our Cause for a Cuppa visit, I mentioned a tribute we had given to Mum. The Tribute concept was was shared with me many years ago. The point is to proactively honour (my mother in this case) someone, looking for the positive contributions they had in your life. Of course no one is without faults, but you want to focus on the positives. I would like to share a portion of what we presented to my mother over 30 years ago. I didn’t realise how important it was to her until I saw it near her bed the last 2 months of her life. “This is a tribute of love and appreciation to the person we have called Mom now for three decades. Our family has always had a difficult time expressing our thoughts and feelings. However you have given so much to us through your patience, love and support that we thought this a good way to express ourselves. We have now tasted the trials and pains of adulthood, marriage, divorce, marriage and work. These are not easy tasks as we might have thought many years ago. It seems that problems await you at every corner and around every bend … We want to honour you, Mom, not only for providing for us materially but more importantly we learned something more valuable than any school could teach … hard work and dedication. We learned that a garden could grow and produce fruit … that we should learn to share our bicycles … that it is wrong to steal … that we should never give up. Thanks Mom for always supporting us in our endeavours. We have gone many different directions in our lives. You have always respected our decisions and are always there with some “motherly” advise when we needed it. We are proud and thankful to be able to call you MOM” My goal is to encourage some of you to do the same. If you do, why not drop me a line and tell me how it went. As a closing note, I wanted to inform you that I am doing a sponsored walk in support of Ovarian Cancer Research UK on 11 March. I would welcome your support. You can contact me or drop by the Holmescarr Community Centre to include your name on a sponsorship form. You can donate online (http://www.justgiving.com/Eric-Simpson). Thank you ahead of time. As always, if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cuppa, the door is always open! Eric Simpson ... eric@communitybaptist.co.uk … 07828141472 … Facebook

ossington Cricket Club The Indoor Chigers at Headingley On Sunday 4th February the indoor Chigers represented South Yorkshire in the regional finals at the home of Yorkshire cricket. A depleted squad of Roy Nelson, Scott Wood, Alex Rowland, Andrew Gardner, Jack Eusman and Sam Roby with Roy Groves providing experience as 7th man took on the might of West, East and North Yorkshire in the shape of Pudsey Congs, Acomb and On Q (a team of players, from various teams in the Premier Division of the Bradford League, some of whom had International experience). The gulf in class was obvious from the start and although the Chigers certainly did not disgrace themselves they lost all three games to finish last in the competition which was won by On Q. On the domestic front the indoor nets have started at the All Saints sports hall on Monday evenings and on the first night it was particularly pleasing to see so many juniors attending. Hopefully I will have news of the proposed improvements to the ground and pavilion for the next edition. Roy Nelson 16 | ROSSINGTON TODAY

Rossington Main Football Club I suppose it was almost certain to happen having had such a mild November and December but the sudden cold snap in recent weeks has hit our football schedule quite hard and to date we have had two weekends without a ball being kicked and the U.19 team have had four consecutive weeks where we have had to postpone their fixture. In gale force winds, our 2nd team bowed out of the County Cup at the quarter-final stage when they travelled to Crofton Sports and lost narrowly 2-1. The conditions that weekend obviously affected the 1st XI as they went down to their heaviest home defeat of the season losing 5-1 to Hallam. A week later we travelled to Dinnington and despite having the better of a poor game in the 1st half, we lost to a late solitary strike from 25 yards. The 2nd team put Carcroft to the sword with a comfortable 5-0 away win in the League, striker Scott Maughan getting an impressive 4 goal haul. On the odd occasion our youth sides have managed to play since the turn of the year, the U.19s drew 1-1 at home to Kinsley and the U.17s gained a 2-2 draw at Sprotborough. There is the possibility of our Oxford Street ground being selected for one or two local Cup Finals - in fact we have the date for one such occasion already when we host the U.16 Boys Final on Wed. April 25th. Not all games have been scheduled but forthcoming fixtures follow; SAT. FEB. 25th 1st v. YORKSHIRE AMATEURS HOME 3p.m. 2nd v. Edlington Town Away 2-30p.m. SAT. MAR. 3rd 1st v. ALBION SPORTS HOME 3p.m. SAT. MAR. 10th 1st v. Bottesford Town Away 3p.m. SAT.MAR. 17th 1st v. SHIREBROOK TOWN HOME 3p.m. WED. MAR 21st 1st v. Albion Sports Away 7-45p.m. SAT. MAR. 24th 1st v. Pontefract Collieries Away 3p.m. SAT. MAR. 31st 1st v. HANDSWORTH HOME 3-00p.m. Certainly a busy March schedule already but it could be added to IF we have further cancellations through February. The Easter programme for the first weekend of April requires even further scrutiny as the Northern Counties East League are hosting the annual NON-LEAGUE GROUND HOP when the region is invaded by non-league football supporters from all over the country (and beyond) to witness as many as 10 games over 3 days. It does affect our game at Worsbrough Bridge on Easter Saturday but more details of this in the next issue. We are always looking at initiatives to encourage more people to attend our HOME games and so I draw attention to our game on Saturday March 17th versus Shirebrook Town. We would like to make this game a form of reunion of the former STATION F.C. (and later ROSSINGTON F.C.) players. When the former Club played on the Welfare from 1986 through to 1998 we first met a side from Shirebrook when we entered the Central Midlands League. Several of our former players are now actively involved with Rossington Main F.C. and others have come down to Oxford Street to see the current set-up but this is a plea to all former players, Committee and supporters to try and make March 17th (2-30p.m. onwards for a couple of hours or so) a date in your diaries to renew old acquaintances and recall past memories. Bar and refreshments available throughout the afternoon. Could all readers of this article inform as many ex-players as possible so that we have a reasonable turn-out on the day. THANK YOU. ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – March News Well the mild riding conditions couldn’t last for ever and now the winter has finally arrived and ravaged the late January / early February Sunday morning club programme. Firstly a wind lashed ‘Four Hootens’ ride (Roberts, Pagnell, Levitt and Slade) was curtailed to a very tough ‘Two Hootens’ ride after the 25 mile outward leg to Hooten Pagnell saw a westerly gale reduce the pack to just 9mph in places! The 50 mile trip feeling more like 100 mile. Another hilly ride to Wentworth Garden Centre followed the following week and by this point some riders were really getting in shape - but then the wind exited and in came the snow! An early year flat favourite to Coastways at Howden being the first victim of freezing conditions that just make the roads too unsafe for group riding. Sitting here now looking at the weather today it looks as though this weeks planned run to Normanby Hall (Flixborough) is going to be in serious jeopardy also? Club rides coming up in the month following publication are as follows and all leave St Michaels at 9.00am unless stated: 04/03/12 Womersley via Snaith Flat 60 miles 11/03/12 Messingham via Gainsborough Flat 65 miles 18/03/12 Thaymar Farm via Carlton Rolling 65 miles 25/03/12 Misterton – introductory ride Flat 45 miles or Wentworth via Stocksbridge V Hilly 75 miles (Peak 100 training) 01/04/12 Ten Bergs – Thurcroft / Ulley Brutal 60 miles 06/04/12 Humber Bridge – Good Friday 100 Flat mainly 100 miles (8.00am start) That should clear away any cobwebs caused by the impromptu snow-offs currently being suffered? And its always good to get 1000 miles in by April. Please visit any of the club’s mediums of communication for further information or ride details: www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk, ‘Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club’ on Facebook, or on twitter @rossowheelers or call into Hudson Cycles on King Avenue and ask Les the club chairman. Safe riding! Brendan Simpson

It is nearly time to get those woods out in preparation for the coming crown green bowls season. Sadly this comment appears to apply only to the retired fraternity in the community as the vast majority of our members are in their 60s ,70s and yes 80s. The local Bowls Club, despite such a healthy average age, and if they can remain in good health, is actually increasing its membership - not necessarily on the competitive side but more so with pleasure and social bowlers who if they so wish can register as playing members. Last year we registered 33 playing members which was just about enough to warrant entering 2 teams in each of the leagues we play in the Doncaster & District Bowls Association, BUT as many as another 25 or so joined the Club to play purely as recreation. Despite regular efforts on behalf of the Club to attract youngsters into the game we only have one JUNIOR member. I suppose the game still carries the tag of "old man's marbles" and new residents to the village may have been under the impression that the facility was exclusive to ex-colliery workers, but we are an Open Club and membership in any capacity is available to all. In an extra effort to encourage more young bowlers into the Club we are offering a great deal of a year's annual subscription for just ÂŁ5. Naturally we will allow any interested young person under the age of 16 opportunity to experience the game and have a go before they make payment, but once registered they will be allowed on the greens to play and practice whenever they are open at no further charge. What better way to get outside in the summer months (away from the computer) and get healthy exercise, especially in the long 6-week summer break, when you are short of things to occupy your time. You can still play cricket or tennis or do your pre-season football if you are sports-minded, but this is a sport that requires skill and accuracy and tactics rather than physical strength and endurance, and is available to both boys and girls. We will even provide you with all the equipment you need and you can start to bowl straight away with no outlay for any special kit or footwear. The current team members are not getting any younger and hopefully we may find a few younger replacements in the years to come.... If you require any further information about membership or any other details about the Club at this stage then please contact the Secretary on 867221. In time we may have all information under Rossington MWBC on the website "Rossington Online". Final note for all current members: PRE-SEASON MEETING IS NOW ON SUNDAY APRIL 1st IN THE BOWLS PAVILION AT 11-00a.m. (Committee to meet at 10-30a.m.) This is a week later than previously scheduled and the greens are likely to be open the following week around Good Friday which is April 6th this year. Get the muscle rub and embrocation ready so that you can get the arms and legs up to signal 2 or 3 accordingly !!!! Yours sincerely, "TWO TO ME, MY JACK, THUMB PEG"

Rossington Parish Council News
Just three meetings to report on this month, the Projects, Strategy and Regeneration Committees, plus the ex-officio Triple ‘A’ Regeneration and Strategy Sub-Committee. The Strategy Committee decided to grant the library £4,000 for room rent. This secured an extra room so that the library would be similar in size and contents of the McConnell Crescent library. It is a sad day when a village like Rossington, in these troubled times, has to by-pass the Mayor’s plans to close our library and basically run our own service. However sad it may be, it is an absolute necessity that we have a library and a library we will have in the Holmescarr Centre. The Strategy Committee also reviewed the allotments and noted that two had been re-let and the one that needed a major tidy up is making excellent progress. The Regeneration Committee scrutinised a number of planning applications most of which were OK and one concern was expressed about a danger from traffic caused by parked vehicles. Triple ‘A’ Regeneration and Strategy Sub-Committee met immediately after the Regeneration Committee and the main agenda item was the proposal to have a Neighbourhood plan in line with the Localism Act. After a seminar at which Parish Councillor Malc Clark and Parish Clerk Steve Merriman attended the discussion revolved around several key issues: Neighbourhood Planning Ethos, Defining the Neighbourhood, Preparing the Neighbourhood Plan, Independent Check, Community Referendum, Legal Force, Frontrunners, Neighbourhood Planning Health Checker, LDF Allocations Consultation Timetable. After considerable discussion regarding the cost, viability and the future possibilities it was decided to recommend that the Parish Council registers with DMBC Planning the parish council’s interest in producing a Neighbourhood Plan for the area within the Rossington Parish Boundary, and commences liaison with DMBC Planning to undertake the Neighbourhood Plan process within the provisions of the Localism Act and its Regulations. The Projects Committee met and the public asked questions about community litter picks and tree planting for the jubilee, these were being investigated. It was reported that Good Neighbours was expected to be in surplus and that quotes for new ovens and extraction system were being sought. Information and details on the Miners Wheel Memorial Garden, the public toilets, Rossington in Bloom and the Market were to be provided by the Chairman and DMBC. The date for this year’s Xmas Fayre will be set by the full Parish Council and its’ February meeting. The Vintage Vehicle & Machinery Show, Motor Cycle Show, and Toy Fair and Model Exhibition planning was well under way. This is to be held at the end of May on the Welfare. DMBC are renewing the security fence at the Welfare in time for this event. The Triple ‘A’ Regeneration and Strategy Sub-Committee have been asked to ask Recycoal about trees for ‘Waddy’ Lane. It was noted that there would be no charges for grounds maintenance imposed on the Welfare. The mayor has relented.

Friends of Brodsworth Way Residents Group Firstly, I must apologise for the error in last month's issue of Rossington Today, I should have said that the coffee morning date was "subject to confirmation" as, at the time of writing, I was trying to book the Pavilion. I did put a notice board outside the pavilion on that day (8th) to advise that it was on the following day, Thursday 9th February. So, the coffee morning went ahead on 9th February with double the attendance we had in January. We were delighted and thank all those who came on such a cold day and who participated and enjoyed having a go at our jigsaw puzzle. We hope to hold this event once a month in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion and (so I don't make the same mistake) are aiming for the first week in March. Please contact me for confirmation of the date. (869001) We are also pleased to announce that a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme was kick-started in early February, for Brodsworth Way 1-29 (between the first two roundabouts). Our next FoBW meeting will be on Monday 19th March, 7pm in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion so, hopefully, you can come. As always, if there are any queries about the group or neighbourhood watch, please contact Susan, 869001.
