I read the advice in this month’s Garden View article with interest, I’ve never been particularly interested in gardening before, but this year I have a new garden that has been lovingly cared for by the previous owner for many years. It has well stocked borders with everything from tiny snowdrops to a huge Lime tree within it, (including huge numbers of things whose names I don’t know), it has struck me that I had better develop some green fingers if the garden has any hope of continuing to look as good next spring as it does now! March does bring with it the promise of the spring to come, as daffodils make their way into flower and early buds begin to appear. Don’t forget to change your clocks at the end of the month – which will mean that it stays lighter for longer into the evening and the days will gradually lengthen. The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th March. Easter falls a couple of weeks into April this year, so don’t forget to let me have details of any Easter events taking place around the area. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

CLOCKS GO FORWARD 1 HOUR! Cause for a Cuppa!

wanting to get back the mother, through WKH VXÎ? HULQJ RI WKH EDE\

Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa! March is here. That means clocks go forward (26 March) and daylight hours are more. So hang in there. The gloom of winter is nearly gone!

Over the next few years, nothing was apparent. Later, however, symptoms started to appear. Doctors looked for everything under the sun and could not ȴ QG WKH FDXVH RI WKH SUREOHP $Q +Ζ9 DQWLERG\ WHVW was considered a last ditch attempt as it seemed so far fetched. The child developed full blown AIDS by the time he was diagnosed. Through investigation, it was determined the father had done this and was prosecuted.

In what I do as a minister in a church, there are certain issues that just never seem to go away. This one particular issue has been around, well I guess, since people have roamed the earth. It gets to who we are deep down. It seems that we, as a race, are quite good at hurting one another. I’m not necessarily talking about physical harm (thought it could be that), but rather any sort. Hurting someone ‌ or being hurt ‌ is part of being human. But along with that needs to come the ability to forgive or be forgiven. Amazing stories litter the internet and news channels. I have seen clips of mothers, whose children had been killed turn to the attacker with forgiveness. “Eric, I don’t think I could do thatâ€?. I know. It is hard to get my head around. But we will tackle that later. Ζ NQRZ WKLV LV QRW WKH Č´ UVW WLPH ZH KDYH YLVLWHG WKLV subject but it is just THAT important. Reading in a magazine not long ago, I was taken back by a story that oozes with jaw-dropping unbelievableness. A baby had been born to a couple that were not getting on. I can’t remember why the man had been so angry. It could have been she left him. It really doesn’t matter. What does matter is what the man chose to do. Working in a hospital environment, he had access to blood tainted with HIV. He injected this baby with a contaminated needle,

The child was treated with the best and latest drugs to try and combat the AIDS virus. Thankfully, it was contained and currently he is not considered able to pass it along. There is no cure for AIDS and WKH QRZ \RXQJ PDQ KDG WR IDFH VRPH GLÉ? FXOW choices. He had every right to be angry and bitter against his father. A father is supposed to love and protect his child. This father did the total opposite. That is an unbelievable story. As a Dad, I just can’t fathom doing that. What this young man did was even more unbelievable. He had become a Christian over the course of time. He learned what forgiveness was and what it wasn’t. He knew that he had to work through forgiving his father. And he did. His father is serving time in prison. Forgiveness does not mean what was done was “OKâ€?. Forgiveness is much more about the victim rather than the perpetrator. This young man could have lived in bitterness. But he chose not to remain the perpetual victim. Forgiveness is freedom. Eric, what about “forgive and forgetâ€?. That is a myth. Who can forget being raped? Who can forget being abused as a child, as an adult? Who can forget having an absentee father? You can’t forget. You can forgive. But it is a process. It won’t happen overnight. But it is possible. Don’t remain the victim. It is helpful to have someone walk with you through this. If I can help, I would be happy to do all I can. I know this has been a bit of a heavy topic this month, but I think an incredibly important one. As always, the door is always open and the kettle always on. Have a fab day and we’ll see you next month all being well.

We are working on a number of projects related to those who are shown on the memorial stone outside St Michael’s Church, near to the gateway to the school. They are commemorated as the fallen in the 191418 war. We would be interested to know if anyone is related to these people who can add to the information we have obtained. Some of them were not Rossington men, but had connections to the village. Some of the material that is informing this piece of work came from the History Group when they handed on their assets to us. In amongst that material, we have also found a copy of ‘The Rossington Song Book’ which was published in 1995 with pieces from Rossington writers, poets, song-writers, artists and school children, celebrating the village, and including pieces of music to accompany the written word. We shall be putting pieces from the Song Book on the website but also in the display box at the library. Some of those school children were younger than 7 years when they helped to contribute to the book. I wonder how many of them, or their parents, remember what happened at the time when the contents formed part of a Rossington Festival Week. community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Spring has Sprung! The other day someone said to me, ‘You are so lucky…you have a beautiful garden.’ I thanked her of course, but I really wanted to say, ‘Luck has very little to do with it. A beautiful garden does not happen by pure chance. It takes a bit of work and planning.’ As the spring equinox looms, the trees blossom and daffodils bloom. The garden is waking up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. I am excited to be outside in it but I’m aware for non-gardeners it can seem daunting when everything (including the weeds) starts growing at once! So where to begin? There are three fairly simple tasks which will get you off to a À \LQJ VWDUW 3UXQLQJ LV WKH ¿ UVW WDVN ,W¶V WLPH WR KDUG SUXQH ODWH À RZHULQJ VKUXEV OLNH %XGGOHLD /H\FHVWHULD and Lavateria, but only if the risk of hard frost is SDVW 6SULQJ À RZHULQJ SODQWV VXFK DV )RUV\WKLD and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned LPPHGLDWHO\ WKH À RZHUV IDGH ,I \RX KDYHQ¶W already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Lilies need a well-drained open planting mixture so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting.

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Thank you to residents who continue to contact me, concerned about areas in the villag ge that they feel need improving. Some of the callss and emails I have from residents are about individual concerns, but many more are from residents concerned cerned about particular areas that they live near, or walk or drive past that they think need to be improved. I have provided information about ongoing community issues as well as new ones. Congratulations to All Saints after being ranked the best performing school in Doncaster for ensuring student progress – a great achievement for the village. I am starting my update by wishing a Happy 5th Birthday to Rossington Community Library. Rossington Library 5 years ago, DMBC made the decision to ask communities to take over the running of libraries, or they would close. Thanks to a number of dedicated volunteers, Rossington library didn’t close and is thriving today based in the Holmescarr Centre. I attended the last volunteers meeting and it was really good to hear about the great work that volunteers are doing keeping the library running. All that you would expect from a library is available as well as large print books, books to help with homework, a number of computers for community use as well as holiday activities for children and quiet areas to read and study. Everyone is welcome to visit and join the library and new volunteers are always welcome. If you haven’t visited the library lately it is well worth a visit. Litter and dumped rubbish It is good to see so many areas that were tidied up in the Cleaner Greener Day. A number of residents have contacted me about areas that they are concerned about and I always ask DMBC to clean up these areas as well as asking them to do more enforcing and prosecuting to deter people from fly tipping and making the area look awful. The enforcement teams from DMBC are in Rossington on a regular basis and a number of fixed penalty notices are issued. Where rubbish has been dumped DMBC enforcement officers always look for any evidence and the rubbish recently dumped near the cemetery had evidence and the officers are therefore taking action. Rossington Activities Programme I am working this year again, with a number of community groups in Rossington, putting together a programme of activities for children and young people for the 6 week summer holidays. With the addition of a new group who provide things to do for teenagers, there should be something available for all ages. Further details will be provided in April’s update. 32 ROSSINGTON TODAY

At the time of writing, g, we are waiting for a further meeting with the Planning Officer to find out what is going to happen with the application and when it will be discussed by the Planning Committee. Also on 21 February, Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster attended a Parish Council meeting to provide an update on Bankwood Lane. My views on the lorry park haven’t changed and the impact on residents’ lives that live in the area has been dreadful and I will continue to support and speak up for residents who want the lorry park to be moved. After hearing about the accident on the new link road due to mud on the road, I contacted DMBC to ask them to take urgent action to clear the road and prevent it happening again. They told me that there are a number of transport management plans in place for the different companies working on there and I have asked what action is being taken to make sure they stick to these plans. Garage sites A number of residents have contacted me or come to my surgeries to raise their concerns about St. Leger’s policy to sell off garage sites. I was pleased that after contacting St Leger about Bankwood Crescent they had decided not to go ahead with this sale. I have met with St Leger to discuss their plans and ensure that they are aware of the impact for some residents of losing their garages that they have used for many years. I hope residents are finding my updates useful, and as I have said before, I don’t have the space to include everything that I have been doing. If you have any suggestions or questions about DMBC services or areas that you feel need improving or need assistance with an individual problem, please don’t wait for my surgeries – please get in touch either by phone or email. Surgery My next surgery will be on: Friday 10 March from 12.30 – 1.45pm at the café at the Holmescarr Centre and from 2.30 – 4pm at Miners Welfare, West End Lane. My contact details: Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael. blake@doncaster.gov.uk Kind regards g
