Your Local Independent Travel Agent

Welcome to the March 2015 edition This month Today Publications celebrates its 10th birthday! It is 10 years since the first issue of Tickhill Today was delivered (and 9 years since the first issue of Rossington Today). I thank everyone who has supported any of the 5 publications that we now have during those 10 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they find them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! I hope that you will continue to enjoy YOUR community magazine for many years to come. I know that many of you always read this introduction and following my comments last month you may be wanting to know how my quest for a new kitchen during 2015 is coming along. Well I am pleased to report that some decisions have now been made, and by the time the next magazine arrives it is possible that some work may have commenced! More details in future issues!

Congratulations Congratulations one and all. You have made it through dark February! By the time you get this, February will be a memory and March will be waving its arms shouting “I am here!”. While it is one of those months that can bring nice weather or a reminder of colder days, as Easter is VERY early this year, let’s think about that fantastic day today as we have our brew together.

of horrible circumstances. Some are Holocaust survivors and even more amazingly Holocaust victims. I just read a quote from Anne Frank (Diary of a Young Girl) who died in Nazi occupied Amsterdam. “It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped all my ideals … Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” Shocking.

I love reading stories about people. I REALLY love reading stories about a particular class of people I call the “over-comers”. These are the rare lot that are able to see envision a rainbow after the storm … make lemonade out of lemons and try to see value in people, sometimes hidden deep within instead of the obvious flaws (that we all have).

For many of these over-comers, a common thread seems to be present. It is not “strength”, “support” or even last month’s word, “love”. But the word is “hope”. What kept people alive (and STILL keeps them going) during horrendous living conditions, persecution, disability and the like is that little 4 letter word. That word actually leads us right to what 5 April is all about … Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Many of these amazing people come out

I certainly understand many see the whole resurrection thing as airy-fairy, something akin to Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny.

While that needs to be the subject for a chat room discussion, there is great evidence and reasoning to accept the historical reality of the resurrection. If the resurrection of Jesus is true (and I believe it is), then that gives great HOPE to any and all followers of Christ. I just read a Facebook post from a high school mate of many years ago. His mother just passed away and in his grief, he didn’t feel he could carry on. We all experience tragedy. If that is where you are today, you are NOT alone. (If you are feeling overwhelmed, PLEASE reach out. Don’t become a statistic.) I tried to encourage him that death is part of life. Death doesn’t have to be feared as hope in Christ and the resurrection helps us to look past the storm and towards the rainbow. I do wish everyone in the “Cause for a Cuppa” family a very Happy Easter and a HOPE filled Spring. And as always, the door is open and the kettle is on.

Rossington Councillor’s Update of our budget to train and help get people back into sustainable work this will entail coaching, training and work placement over 12 weeks. This will consist of Week 1 – Work with the Coach, Week 2 – Full time on employability / enterprise training*, Week 3 – Full time on employability / enterprise training*, Week 4 – Work with the Coach and Week 5 onwards – Work placement* *The Coach will maintain contact throughout the clients’ time on programme and into sustained employment. After 26 weeks of sustained employment a small lump sum will be paid. I just hope it gets to Rossington.

I am standing for Ward Councillor in May, as an Independent, I have fallen out with Labour’s local and national policies and am disgusted with the way the treat people and the wards. There are no local candidates, Rossington party members were ignored and rejected, others from Thorne, Edlington and Bawtry were chosen, people who don’t even know Rossington. Even the selection was not held in Rossington! Apparently in my quest to improve Rossington I have upset too many people. Well if that improves Rossington I’m proud that I have upset so many delicate souls, what a shame. You, the people of Rossington, deserve the best and I have always tried to give you the best. So, please vote for me in May.

A report on Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) has been given to the Mayor and this is indecisive emotionally against, logically in favour. It is limited to below 1000 metres which stops coal bed methane extraction which is apparently good for Doncaster. But there is little a council can do it terms of controlling fracking as it is controlled by other government agencies such as the Environment agency and Health and Safety Executive.

As I have said elsewhere in this magazine, the police have not been attending the meetings they should have attended. They show no presence at either of the two TARA meetings they should attend. They arbitrarily cancelled the PACT meetings so that they could meet people in supermarkets and at the market place. Who is going to discuss things in public when everyone can hear? I was told that at the monthly Ward Members meeting, at which an Inspector should attend that he ‘may send a PCSO’! Well I was spitting feathers, this is a strategic meeting and a PCSO is not the person who should be attending. I shall be taking this further!

We had an informal Community and Environment Scrutiny Panel meeting to discuss waste and Sita turned up en-masse to tell us about what they did and what they planned to do. It was interesting environmentally and I can only encourage more recycling if only so much litter was not generated in its’ collection. On the waste front I have to say that Grange Lane near the cemetery is yet again the subject of fly tipping and what a mess this is, please stop it whoever you are and if anyone knows anything about this please contact me on 07887 573109.

The market saga goes on and on and on. I have now heard that any work that will be done will be only done after they have finished Mexborough market. It really is not good enough, in fact it is insulting that we are being marginalised this way, I shall take this further (again). The Council has identified a preferred bidder (Runwood Homes) through the tender process for all seven residential care homes for older people. This means that all homes would remain open and residents will not have to move. Gattison House is safe. As are the staff who will be TUPE’d across (a way of transferring staff and ensuring their terms and conditions remain secure). This will take about three months to happen. The Mayor has signed off on a deal that will bring in an extra £947k to Doncaster over two years on top 10

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

THIS GIRL CAN!

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

A recent survey carried out by Sport England found there is a huge gender gap when it comes to sport and physical activity. Two million fewer women than men between the ages of 14 and 40 are physically active on a regular basis and yet 75% of women said they would like to be more active. So what’s stopping them? There were several factors identified as barriers to exercise including the usual suspects of time and cost. One of the strongest reasons that emerged, however, was the fear of being judged. Women were concerned about what they looked like during exercise and were worried that people would think they were ‘rubbish’. As a result, Sport England has launched a huge campaign aimed at getting women exercising. This campaign will show ‘real women’ exercising in a bid to change the inaccurate view that active females must be super-fit and look amazing in lycra. Headlines include – ‘sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox’ and my favourite clip shows someone cycling with the caption reading ‘I’m slow but I’m lapping everyone on the couch’. There’s a thought! So, come on ladies – let’s get hot and sweaty, let’s dance like no one is watching, let the jiggly bits jiggle and let’s exercise because we love our bodies not because we hate them! Name: Sex: Date into care: Age on arrival: Breed: Good with dogs: Good with cats:

Lady Female 02/7/2014 10 months Lurcher ? ?

My name is Lady a very energetic girl as I am still very young. I need a strong pack leader to guide me. Socialization and training classes would help boost my confidence. I love playing and giving cuddles. A lovable girl that will need time and affection to be a happy lurcher. I have lived with teenagers before and I like to travel.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Tel: 01302 711330

Yet another stray who has fallen on hard times. Dolly was one of the lucky ones as she was taken in by a kind couple when she turned up in their garden looking very thin and sorry for herself.. Unfortunately she couldn’t stay and her rescuers contacted Mayflower for help. We are sure that she once had owners as she is extremely sociable but for whatever reason nobody has come forward to claim her. Dolly loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss! Please dont pass her by – give her the chance of a loving home again.

Name: Thomas Sex: Male Dec 2014 Date into care: 2 Years Age on arrival: RECOMMENDED WITH: Dogs: ? Cats: Yes Children: Older HAPPY TO LIVE AS A: Housecat: Possible Access outside: Yes Thomas came to Mayflower with his Mum after their owner had sadly died. Nobody in the family was able to offer them a place to stay so contacted Mayflower for help. Thomas is extremely sociable with other cats but can be a little nervous around people he doesn’t know well. A quiet home with no young children would suit him best. Especially if there was an existing sociable cat to pal up with. Although he has previously been outside, Thomas would adapt to being a housecat if necessary. Please give him a chance.

RECOMMENDED WITH: Dogs: No Cats: No Children: Yes HAPPY TO LIVE AS A: Housecat: Yes Access outside: Possible Hi.. My name is Charlie and I have come to Mayflower because my owners new partner is allergic to me. I was quite happy to share him but here I am! I have found life quite difficult here but I’m starting to settle in now. I love fusses, and especially tickles under my chin, but I have to get to know you a bit better first. Please stop and get to know me. I would love you to be part of my new family Charlie loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss!

Kia Female 27/9/2013 4 Beagle No ?

I am one of the carers favourite dogs as I have been at the sanctuary quite a while. I am an intelligent girl and I know all my commands. I love to play and need to be kept occupied and well exercised to be a very happy dog. I can jump quite high so will need very high fencing for my garden. Best suited to a home with experienced dog owners and people that will have plenty of time for me and in a one animal household. I travel well and have lived with teenagers.

garden view

The greenhouse guide “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” People often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.” A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot - you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one - my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) - it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium- framed types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Wooden-framed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary. 26

Apart from heat the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a predesignated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials. By Rachel Leverton

Rossington Parish Council well their shift pattern should allow for attendance at the Parish Council meeting for one day a month. I shall discuss this further in my Ward Councillor’s report as this reflects on that side as well.

It is election year and I hope that we get a good show in terms of candidates and let the best man or woman win. I will be standing, this time as an Independent, the Labour Party and I have had a fall out and I no longer believe that the national or local party are good for Rossington. I have always stood up for Rossington and have ruffled a few feathers along the way and do not, in any way, regret this. I was elected by the people of Rossington to represent the people of Rossington and they deserve the best and I intend to ensure that they get the best! So, please vote for me in May and support also all those hard working parish Councillors who have helped over the last four years.

We’ve had a poorly attended Projects Committee meeting at which we (had to) discuss the Easter Eggstravaganza and the Summer Fair, or Party in the Park or Mega Fun Day, whatever we are going to call it! Ali Harper and I set down our basic premise for these and due to time constraints, the non-attendees will have to go with the flow as they say. The decision was to have them much as last year as the Easter Eggstravaganza was such a success and the Party in the Park was basically not given a chance as it was a washout. We did however pick the dates, Easter Sunday is on April 5th this year and the summer event will be on Saturday 18th July 11.00am to 5.30pm then 6.00pm to 11.00pm.

The allotments were yet again high on the work plan for the month. We finally found the missing meter with the help of Bill Reynolds who had to dig it out! Bill and Barry Chadwick then switched the water off and the was no usage, and on close monitoring, after switching it back on found that almost one tonne of water was being used a day at a time of year when almost none should have been used! That was about 960 litres or 1700 pints a day, lost! So the search is on for our lost water and the reason that our rents in do not cover our expenditure.

We had a Planning Committee meeting at which we discussed the proposed 4 bungalows on Wildflower Close and the 3 new two bedroom houses on Whitcomb Drive; there was some concern regarding parking with the first and whether they were suitable for the location with the latter, these concerns were expressed to DMBC. There was also considerable discussion of the application to build 96 houses on the colliery site, these, unlike the first application, are mixed type of properties from three bedroom semi’s to 4 bedroom detached and this is felt to be much more suitable than the previous application for 76 of four bedroom houses only.

Planning is well under way for the Easter Eggstravaganza, which will be again on Easter Sunday, 5th April, at Brodsworth Way Pavilion 11.00am to 3.00pm. For those that don’t know this is off Brodsworth Way, off Stripe Road. Just follow Brodsworth Way round and the Pavilion is on the left hand side. We will be having Laser Quest, Inflatable Assault Course, Giant Slide, games for under eights, fun fair rides, Easter Bunny, the Rovers and plenty of trade stalls. The highlight will be the Parish Council BBQ, from which you can buy burgers and hot dogs at reasonable prices along with pop and crisps and the usual tea and coffee. The kids will also receive a free Cadbury’s Cream Egg from the Parish Council. This event is free to all and we hope that everyone makes an effort to attend. I have become very disappointed with the lack of Police attendance at Parish Council meetings. This is not just the Parish Council, it’s all the other meetings I go to as well. But the Parish Council meeting is important. Yes, it’s the lowest level of government, but it is a level of government and as such should be treated with respect. In the nearly four years since I have been Chair the Police have attended just once, yes once out of 42 possible attendances. That is not including other meetings that they are invited to. To cap it all we don’t even get a report of what is happening around the village. It is a ridiculous situation where the police appear to be above the law, ignoring the public and public bodies. It is arrogance of the worst sort. We have been told that they will come when it fits their shift pattern, 30

ROSSINGTON TODAY

The February Parish Council Meeting was an easy one with a small agenda at which we discussed the previously mentioned Allotment situation, we discussed having paperless meetings now allowed by a change in the law, to save paper, and become more efficient. We also discussed having meetings at alternative venues, It has become noticeable that it is difficult for some members to attend meetings, the major one was working in jobs that meant that they couldn’t attend. Unfortunately the Poacher supplies two members of the Project committee and only one can attend at any one time, so conveniently we propose to trial having a meeting at an unused room at the Poacher. Of course this will be open to the public to attend and have their say as normal and to ensure that everyone knows we shall ensure that as much publicity will be given to these meetings as possible. Don’t forget in May please vote for me:

Methodist Minister

Dear Friends, By the time you will be reading this letter, we will be in lent already. Lent is when people decide to do away with some pleasures as a way of fasting. It is to prepare for the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland produces a bimonthly worship material with the title ‘Roots’. In April 2014, it published and distributed a free copy of ‘Roots’ with the title ‘A Generous Life’. I wonder if I can use a bible passage from Isaiah in that issue to remind you of some of the reasons why we fast in Lent. It comes in the form of a conversation between two people labelled as numbers 1 and 2. Below is the conversation: 1. Why do we fast, but God does not see? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to share your bread with the hungry? 1. Of course, I know what it is to feel hunger: when it happens I go into the nearest restaurant! 2. You serve your own interests on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. 1. I have the best interests of my work force at heart: I pay them the full amount of the minimum wage, so that my business can remain profitable and I can continue to employ them! 2. You fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting, as you do today, will not make your voice heard on high. 1. I’m always happy to discuss difficult issues with others, and if they find it hard to share my point of view, I shout louder! 1. Why do we humble ourselves, but God does not notice? Humility? You won’t find anyone more humble than me! 2. Is this the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? 1. I’ve always said that there should be equal rights: if some people choose to live in poverty, that’s up to them! 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 1. It’s true that I do have a couple of rooms in my house that I never use, but I need somewhere to keep all my possessions, don’t I? 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: to bring the homeless poor into your house? 1. When I see children looking so dirty, with the ragged clothes hanging off them, it really makes me appreciate the good quality clothes I’m able to buy. 2. Is not this the fast that I choose: when you see the poor naked, to cover them? 1. Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? 2. Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am! Have a blessed period of Lent. Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T 32

Male Voice Choir For some time the choir has experienced a serious problem in recruiting new members. We have lost a large number through age and illness and in consequence are again appealing for people of any age or ability, with an interest in singing to join us, in saving what has been a fundamental feature of our community for many years. We were established in 1934 and have given virtually unbroken service since. In order to encourage others to join we propose to hold an open evening at our practice at:THE RAGUSA CENTRE, RADBURN ROAD, ROSSINGTON ON WEDNESDAY 18th. MARCH BETWEEN 7.00p.m. and 9.00.p.m. Light refreshments will be available IN A BREAK WITH TRADITION THIS INVITATION IS EXTENDED TO BOTH MALE AND FEMALE SINGERS SINCE IT IS NOW FELT THAT THE CHOIR CANNOT DEVELOP WITHOUT BEING OPEN TO ALL. THIS IS HOPEFULLY OF INTEREST TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE ESPECIALLY WELCOME. T

TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB On Friday 30th January Lion President Steve Radford and Welfare Chairman Graham Mickley attended the Doncaster Food Bank at Christ Church, Thorne Road Doncaster where they presented esented a cheque for £1000 towards the setting up costs of a new Food Bank to be opened at the Holmescarr Centre in Rossington on Thursday 16th April. The Food Bank is designed to help individuals and families in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies. Local care professionals in the Doncaster area refer people with a food voucher to the Food Bank. Here they are given their food supplies, a cup of coffee and help in finding other professionals who can help them out of their crisis. The Food Bank allows the general public to contribute to and support local well-being on a simple, practical way and the Churches and Schools in Tickhill organise monthly collections of food items which are delivered to Christ Church. By donating to the Food Bank you can help support local people in crisis, thank you! The Food Bank can be contacted on 01302 738629, www.doncaster. foodbank.org.uk or info@doncasterfoodbank.org.uk Lions International Youth Camp 2015 The youth camp this year is organised by the Lions Clubs of the UK in partnership with the Doncaster Deaf Trust from Tuesday 4th August to Friday 14th August. Based at the Deaf Trust young people from around the world will enjoy ten days of trips and events organised by various Yorkshire Lions Clubs. Last October Tickhill and District Lions Club organised a race night at Tickhill Institute supported by the other five local Lions Clubs which raised over £900 towards the cost of coach travel for the young campers. After the Tour de France last year another event to put Yorkshire (and especially Doncaster) on the map. St Ledger Doncaster ½ Marathon 1983 A video almost fifty-five minutes long is now available on youtube covering the second half marathon organised by our Lions Club thirty-two years ago. There are a number of local faces to see looking an awful lot younger - Phil Beavers with a beard! youtube.com/stledgerhalfmarathon Easter Eggs There are 50 Giant Easter Eggs spread around the local area to be won in draws raising funds to enable us to maintain our work providing help to those who need it. Please have a go if you see one. You can keep in touch with Tickhill and District Lions Club on www.tickhill-lions.com or contact@tickhilllions.com or telephone 0844 963 2462 Lion Phil Thomas T 34

Hope4 Benefits

Hope4Benefits was set up in August last year to help, support and advise local people about Welfare Benefits, and the changes that are coming into place in the near future and what these mean to those people who are on Benefits. We offer a full welfare benefits service, benefits checks, form filling, support at assessments and tribunals. We can also offer a Supported Appointments Scheme for individuals who due to unforeseen circumstances do not have family living close by. We would arrange to pick them up at their home, take them to the appointments, stay with them, and take them back home for a fee of £20, inclusive of transport. We can help with any medical appointment or even routine social appointments such as hairdressers. When we take an individual to a Hospital Appointment we would be going into the appointment, to take notes and explain what was said in the appointment to relatives. We can also arrange to meet at Community Centres or arrange home visits, and also have space at the South Yorkshire Credit Union in Mexborough. Thank you

A big thank you to the very kind people who stopped to help my husband after he came off his bike at the roundabout near to The Styrrup in Rossington around 4pm on Saturday 14th February. Both to the people who helped him up and got him home, and to the man walking his dog, who amended his route and brought my husband’s bike home for him. Your kindness is very much appreciated by the family. An operation has been required and my husband is still in hospital, but he is on the mend, and your assistance ensured he was being treated as quickly as possible.

A grateful Rossington resident. T

Rossington Level Crossing Renewal – Road Closure Rossington level crossing was programmed for renewal by Network Rail in June 2013 as the crossing equipment was life expired. Due to the landslip which occurred at Hatfield Colliery and the resulting additional diversionary rail traffic, the rail possessions to undertake this work were cancelled.

require a nine day road closure to allow decommissioning of the existing crossing equipment and full set up and testing of the new crossing equipment for each pair of crossing followed by a subsequent weekend closure to allow set up of the RADAR equipment which will ensure safety of road vehicles and pedestrians.

Obtaining rail access at this location is significantly constrained due to the high volume of traffic on the key East Coast Main Line route and the minimal diversionary options. As a result the next available rail access which gives sufficient time to commission the upgrade has been identified as 28/29 March and 4/5 April 2015 allowing a renewal that is required to avoid failures of the crossing which would cause significant disruption to both road and rail traffic.

Station Road level crossing will therefore be closed to traffic and pedestrians between Friday 27 March 2015 at 23:00 and Monday 06 April 2015 at 08:00. A diversionary route will be in force which will take traffic from Station Lane to/from Gattison Lane, Clay Flat Lane and Stripe Road. A 24 hour mini bus service will be on standby for pedestrians throughout the duration of the closure.

In order to improve both reliability and safety of Rossington level crossing, a full renewal is being undertaken of its control systems and equipment. As a result this will
