As the months fly by we once again enter the final term of the school year and move into exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard this May. We have a year of respite this year! No major exams and no dreading the August results day! The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th May. June is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to get the details to me in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Thank you. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.

Best wishes,

Cause for a Cuppa Good morning … afternoon … evening! Pick one that suits or just whatever one strikes your fancy. I hope you had an enjoyable Easter period. I’d like to revisit a subject we’ve talked about before … depression. Just a fortnight ago, a Doncaster couple hugged each other as they jumped in front of a train at the downtown station. I was shocked when I saw the story. On reading that, my mind went to one of the most talented actors and voices I had ever seen, Robin Williams. Can you believe it has been nearly 4 years since he took his life? I couldn’t. It was August 2014 when he was discovered in his home. He was battling a mental illness that resulted LQ KLP VWUXJJOLQJ WR UHPHPEHU KLV OLQHV IRU D ȴ OP We all go through days and times of being “blue”. I have spoken to some (and to be honest, I’m one of them) who have struggled with this prolonged winter dreariness. Hopefully by the time this arrives, the sun would have broken through! Let me share with you a few thoughts I discovered about this. Look at this as, “you might be struggling with a degree of depression if …” Do you struggle to get out of bed in the morning or possibly stay up late, trying to delay the start of a new day. Have you started sleeping more than usual or what would be considered normal? Does being around happy people disturb you? I’m not talking about those who go OTT, but upbeat friends or family. Do you try to avoid social settings because you feel you put a damper on the mood? How you see yourself can be an indicator. You might not feel worthy to “burden” someone else with your struggles. You might feel a great sadness without any real answer as to WHY you feel this way. 7KHVH IHHOLQJV FDQ KDYH D NQRFN RQ H΍ HFW Procrastination might increase, justifying to yourself that you can do tomorrow what should

be done today. These things can lead to lack of proper sleep and appetite. Unfortunately that will normally then lead to further feelings of depression and on goes the downward spiral. What can you do? If you are struggling, you might be very reluctant to reach out for help. Fight the urge to think all will get better on its own. Being willing to DVN IRU KHOS LV WKH ȴ UVW DQG PRVW LPSRUWDQW WKLQJ %XW there are other things you can do to help yourself if you notice you are on the path to depression. Get some exercise. Go for a walk. When you exercise, endorphins (hormone within your brain and nervous system) are released into your body which gives you a feeling (temporarily) of euphoria … sometimes called a “runner’s high”. It will probably make it worse. /DVW EXW QRW OHDVW LV D WDFWLF RI ȴ QGLQJ VRPHRQH to serve. Does a friend need a hand with the garden or a DIY job you could handle or help with? I’ve found it amazing that when a person would focus on someone or something else (outside of themselves), the cloud of depression seems just a touch less dense. Give it a go. community Community Hi I have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition of the Retford Life.

LIFTING… It is often with a wry smile that a patient recalls (confesses!) to hurting their back whilst lifting! There are many instances where we all need to lift both at work and in the home. There are the obvious scenarios encountered by trades people and healthcare workers, the not so obvious FDVHV RI DGPLQ VWD΍ OLIWLQJ KHDY\ DPRXQWV RI paperwork or people for whom travel plays a major part of their work which requires the KDQGOLQJ RI VXLWFDVHV FRPSXWHUV ȴ OHV HWF Then there are the parents who have babies and toddlers (plus ‘gear’) to lug about…the keen gardener who just needs to get the job done…not to mention the DIYers!... Here’s some tips on lifting with care… 1. Plan What needs to go where? Do you need help? Are there any obstructions? 2. Spread the strain Allowing your back AND hips AND knees to bend as you lift prevents the VWUDLQ D΍ HFWLQJ MXVW RQH ERG\ DUHD 3. Keep the load close to the waist 4. Stay stable Your feet should be apart to give you a stable base and you should endeavour to move your feet during the manoeuvre in order to maintain this stability. 5. Don’t twist Once you are holding the load, move your feet in the direction you want to go rather than twisting the spine 6. Keep it smooth If you are needing to jerk or snatch the load then you haven’t got full control Trust your instincts…if it seems like a bad idea, it probably is! Our spines are designed to cope with moving and handling objects but won’t withstand misuse.

Why you’re NEVER too old to take up yoga. As a yoga teacher in my 66th year, (where on earth did that time go?!), I’ve become even more aware that if I want to keep being able to do all the things I want to do – I need to look after my health. The reality is that for many of us as we age, we not only move less than perhaps we should, but years of poor posture, less than healthy eating habits and the onset of conditions such as arthritis, diabetes or blood pressure to name but a few, start to take their toll. I read somewhere recently – that we humans are living longer – but living sicker. But what is the point of adding another decade to our life span if that life is riddled with pain or health challenges which prevent us from actually living? I know there are some things life throws at us we simply cannot control or predict. But, almost every doctor you speak to, or article you read, or TV programme you watch (and there are plenty these days on TV telling us how to stay younger!) all these sources seem to agree on one thing: our lifestyle has a dramatic impact on how we age. You don’t need me to tell you how important H[HUFLVH LV %XW ¿QGLQJ WKH ULJKW NLQG RI exercise which will support your health and yet be enjoyable enough for you to actually keep it up is not always easy. Yoga encourages you to actually become more aware of your body – and if you’re in the right kind of class, which doesn’t go too fast, gives you time to understand some basic safety principles, you can adjust either deeper into a stretch or pull back – so you get just the right level of challenge for your body. For so many other types of exercise, we are still attached to our phones, watching TV screens or our mind is completely elsewhere - and we don’t realise we’ve done too much till it’s too late. Yoga can help you learn to manage pain or other conditions through breathing and relaxation techniques. Make sure your house doors and windows are locked, even when you are in the house, and don’t forget you can mark your valuable items of property with u.v marker pens.
