Your Local Independent Travel Agent with over 25 years experience

Welcome to the May 2015 edition

I am sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there is an election this month. While this magazine isn’t of a political nature, we are pleased that several of the local candidates have chosen the magazine as a way of communicating with you, their electorate. All contacted me directly and chose to spend some of their marketing budget! As soon as last months magazines went to print I set about emptying my kitchen and ended up with boxes piled high in the garage and my study and by the time the magazines arrived from my printers my old kitchen had been stripped of the old cupboards. The magazines and all of their accompanying leaflets were sorted from the corner of the kitchen surrounding by large boxes containing the new kitchen cabinets and various new appliances! Good job the weather remained dry as we also had boxes of magazines all over the driveway! The kitchen is now complete apart from a little decorating that will be done as soon as I have this magazine to print. Andy and David of AJ Installations have done a fantastic job, looking after all aspects of the refit and helping to ensure everything went smoothly with as little disruption as possible. A big thank you also to Stuart at DC Interiors for all his design input; helping me include the features I really wanted, home visits checking on progress and the supply of a beautiful kitchen which maximises the space available. I’ve only waited 10 years to get this kitchen!

A slap in the face! As I am writing this, we are sitting in a caravan at Eyemouth, off the east coast of Scotland. The weather is gorgeous (as I understand it is in Rossington). We hit this just right as a bit of a get-away the 2nd week of the Easter holiday. Sometimes I have a plan for what I want to talk about as we have our brew together. Sometimes it just slaps me in the face. This month is a “slap in the face” month. Let me explain what I mean. We arrived at the park later than I had planned ... due to a last minute “getting ourselves sorted” (which I also did not plan). Just this morning I got my lad out with his mate for a walk round the grounds and over by the cliffs (X-box was abandoned at home!). He was captivated. “Ohh Dad, can we move here?! Look at that!” It was all I had to try and keep him from being overexcited too close to the cliffs as the gulls rode the breeze. We made our way down to the w a t e r ’s

edge and he just couldn’t get over the cool-ness of all those nooks, water pools and amazing places to climb and explore that would fill any 11 year old heart. I thought about that over the next few hours. The day was unbelievable. You couldn’t ask for better weather. The wind was calm and the sea clear. The beach sand area was not silky smooth but was very nice. There were a few arcades and eateries but nothing terribly “in your face”. It was the perfect scenario for a family outing. It was what I DIDN’T see that got me thinking. What was missing in this whole scene was ... people. Now, it wasn’t that there were NO people but there were relatively FEW people for the conditions of the day and fact that school not in session. That also takes into consideration that this caravan site, though not huge, has a fair number of units. If I can assume that half of the small crowd at the beach was from the caravan park, then there was even a smaller crowd of locals. Do they not realise they have a beach front like this? Did they forget the beauty of the cliffs? Has the blueness of the water turned murky in their minds? I don’t know the

answer to those questions. I would like to venture a guess. Could it be that they have it 24/7 and so have lost some appreciation for what they have on their back door? It happens. I get it all the time. (Well, I used to get it ... not so much any more.) “Why would you want to move from the USA to Rossington?” There is no place that is perfect but I think sometimes we forget how good we have it in the village. Rossington has a much better sense of community than any place I have ever lived in the States. We have a local butcher, baker (but no candlestick maker that I know) ... shop owners that you know by name. We have an airport 10 minutes away that can wing you to Europe for a few shillings (you know what I mean), countryside to walk, bike and horse ride (horse required for that one). We have a heritage second to none and a bright future ... I believe. I mean ... we are blessed! We have it great. It is always encouraging to hear a word from anyone who enjoys reading Cause for a Cuppa. I appreciate it! (Someone stopped me just last week.) As always, the door is open and the kettle is on!

VOTE LOCAL - VOTE GREEN - VOTE KELLY CONNOLLY - 7th MAY Hello Residents of Rossington! My name is Kelly Connolly, and I am your Green Party th Candidate for the local elec ons on May 7 2015. Having lived in Rossington all my life and I am now raising my own family here. I feel I have what it takes to represent our community and make the right decisions for the good of us all. In my work as a rela onship and children’s counsellor, I am o en faced with challenging situa ons. This experience will stand me in good stead to face some of the difficult decisions that are required to make our village a be er place.

Kelly Connolly

Whilst gaining experience of helping families I have seen all too o en, the struggles and difficult choices families have to face on a daily basis just to survive. With loss of earnings, closure of important community projects that support families, as well as an increase in the cost of transport and other important public services.

Why the Green Party? One of the reasons I have chosen to stand with the Green Party is because the Green Party is opposed to the failed economics of austerity.

Why are the Green Party against austerity? The other major poli cal par es in this elec on are choosing to advocate a con nua on of the failed economics of austerity. Austerity a acks the poorest and most vulnerable in our society and hacks away at our public services. Since 2010 Doncaster has had £93 million cut from its budget, that’s £305 for every man woman and child in the borough. Our public services are strained to the limit, incomes are barely rising and too many of our people depend of food banks to survive. This has to change! In Doncaster we need the minimum wage to be the living wage. This not only helps individuals and families but supports local businesses by increasing the spending power of the community. If elected I will fight for the change we all need.

Don’t choose austerity - vote for change - Vote Green on 7th May 2015.

VOTE for Kelly Connolly for Rossington and Bawtry. As your local Candidate I would be pleased to hear from local residents about any concerns or anything you would like support with.

VOTE GUY ASTON VOTE UKIP The game is on. The establishment par es are promising you morsels again… it must be elec on me. However, before you vote you may wish to consider the following.

Who asked you? The EU now controls 65% of rules and regula ons in the UK. We are seeing a stream of immigra on at a level of 300,000 per year — no wonder our services are under such pressure, not to men on the homes shortage. Our poli cians have borrowed so much that the interest on what we owe is greater than the whole of the UK Defence Budget (£55 thousand million). Yet ask yourself the ques on; did poli cians ever ask us, the people, if this was what we wished for? Well, did they? The truth is plain: ¡

They do not listen to the people

¡

They do not speak for the people

¡

The EU will not let them act for the people

UKIP will fight to leave the European Union, restoring full sovereignty to the UK Parliament and the people of the UK. A UKIP government would listen as we believe that the best people to govern Britain are the Bri sh people.

Large by name, but no longer by nature

joyous occasion she was happy to share with her group. It was also especially pleasing finding out that Slimming World is supported by the Royal College of Midwives and is totally healthy and safe to follow meaning that her daughter could continue her own healthy eating plan during her pregnancy.

Local lady, Julie Large has lost over 2 stone and is the lightest she’s been in over 20 years and has proved to be an inspiration to her family and friends. After years of struggling with constant yoyoing of her weight and attending other weight loss groups, Julie decided enough was enough and this was the last time that she was going to join a slimming group. January 2013 Julie walked through the door of her local Slimming World group feeling nervous and embarrassed of the way she looked. She had no need to worry as she instantly felt at home with the warm and friendly welcome atmosphere. Julie loved the fact that her weight is always confidential and the key to her success was staying to group.

Julie was delighted when daughter Kayleigh gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl and was back in group the week after. Due to Kayleigh being in control of her eating habits and maintaining a healthy eating plan throughout her pregnancy she returned to group with a whopping 1 stone loss she has continued her progress losing a further 2 stone and is now close to becoming a target member.

Before

After all the fabulous experiences and watching people change their lives in group, Julie was inspired by Amanda, her consultant, to attend a local opportunity event about becoming a consultant herself. Amanda is very proud to hand over the reins to Julie on 27th April to continue with the successes in the Monday night Rossington group. It’s not too late to make 2015 the year of change for you, Julie would love to help, so why not come along to Julie’s Slimming World group at Pheasant Bank School, West End Lane, Rossington on Mondays at 5pm and 7pm. Julie can be contacted on 07710 548520. See you there.

Julie was blown away with the amount of everyday foods that could be enjoyed unlimited. It’s a healthy eating plan designed to satisfy even the largest of appetites. Now Julie fills up on her favourite foods like home-made Chinese, roast dinners and a full English breakfast as well as foods such as fruit, veg, lean meat, poultry, pasta, rice and potatoes and she still finds room to enjoy a large glass of wine. Julie says “Slimming World definitely does not feel like a diet”

After

Julie loves going to her Slimming world group where she is supported by other members and loves to learn new recipes she can try at home, she says, “my family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook for everyone and they can’t believe it is all healthy food because it tastes so good especially my speciality of Chinese.” People worry about joining slimming groups because they don’t know what to expect but Julie says, “from the minute I walked through the door I was made to feel so welcome by the consultant and the members and I knew I could do it, the thought of stepping on the scales was so daunting but I was put at ease and now it’s like a night out with friends, an hour of ‘me’ time!”

garden view

Chelsea 19th - 23rd May

The Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion.

By Rachel Leverton Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watered-down version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land. In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day... Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavilion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes. Chelsea draws over 150 000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over five days instead of four, such is its popularity. 24

ROSSINGTON TODAY

The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breath-taking. Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia. Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come.

Rossington Councillor’s Update of delicious produce including fresh meat and pies, breads, cakes and pastries, as well as honey and jams. Doncaster Market has also been put forward as a finalist for ‘Best Food Market’ at the BBC Food & Farming Awards this year. The market, the biggest traditional market in the North of England, is a finalist in the ‘Best Food Market’ category, up against Crystal Palace market in London and Levenshulme market in Manchester. It’s a pity Rossington market has not yet been revitalised!

It’s nice to have a few things to report, without having to scratch my head and go back over the month to find something to say! Although I could use all my column to say “Vote for Richard Cooper-Holmes and Ali Harper in May” I will only mention it a few times! There will be 10 candidates in May’s election including Ali and myself and we are standing under no banner. We are independents. The buses have been very erratic in where they drop people off whilst returning to the Park and Ride from Doncaster. Reports of some long distance walking have come out. So, I had a word with the Council Officer responsible (although it is First Buses who run the service) and as a result the buses will, after a mandatory 8 weeks consultation, call in and drop people off in the Park and Ride itself where they should.

We have put in two extra benches on Brodsworth Way Fields for dog walkers and park users to sit on. Perhaps this will encourage more users to this well liked area. If you have any other ideas for seating please contact the new councillors after the election. If of course I get elected then feel free to call me on 07887 573109 or 864668 or email me on cooperholmes@btconnect.com.

FARRRS 2 has been launched in Hatchell Wood School in Bessacarr and amid some complaints from people who live on Warning Tongue Lane, mostly about the Wildlife Park and things that were not going to happen. A road will be built from the end of FARRRS at Parrott’s Corner straight to the Airport road on Hirst Lane. It shouldn’t take too long to build. At last things are moving with the golf course, the consortium building it have announced that they are in the final stages of putting together the plans, the environmental impact assessment, the ecological review and the archaeological work so that they can put plans into the council by mid summer to get planning permission. At the same time, and for the first time, the PGA have publically supported the project and allowed their name to be used and furthermore said that the first PGA tournament will be in two years time!

Don’t forget on May 7th vote for Richard Cooper-Holmes and Ali Harper your local can-didates both from Rossington. Vote for local people who know Rossington. Kindest Regards

Richard Cooper-Holmes

Rossington Parish Council inside all the rides and attractions are free. Details next month. Thanks to the Parish Councillors who helped, our staff, and especially Bob, Ian, Danny and Jenny.

The election is a week or so away and 17 potential Parish Councillors, (we elect 15) will be biting their nails with worry and anticipation. Well some of us have been round the block a few time and I hate to say that we still worry, bite our nails experienced or not. At this point in the campaign 95% of the postal votes are in and as it is 50/50 in terms of postal votes and those that go to a polling station to vote, so half the electors can not now be influenced! Those that are left to vote please don’t waste your vote, vote for people you know, vote Richard Cooper-Holmes and Ali Harper.

Oops, the crossing again, during the closure of the crossing before Easter to renew the signalling system, there was what can only be describe the chaos on our streets especially Clay Flat Lane? HGV’s can’t get past the dustbin wagons and busses, queues at almost every junction and cars everywhere! I’d like to see the statistics from the traffic monitoring system that was installed to look at traffic flows, it’s just a vision of the future.

The saga of the crossing goes on and on, with the consultation figures split 50/50 for a road bridge or foot bridge. This was a result of a pressure group, who legitimately object to a road bridge because they are seriously affected by the building of it. They raised a petition of 700 or so against a road bridge, although some considerable concerns have been raised about some signatures, and how they were obtained. However that still leaves it a powerful document.

It is ridiculous to open a new road, FARRRS, that was desperately needed and then close the only other road in, to leave the village in the same situation as before, one road in and no other way out. The 9 days of chaos shows a bleak future for our traffic flow and leaves the village even more split than now with the rail-way line splitting us permanently with no short route from one side to the other. Clay Flat Lane, Bond Street or nothing we are only left with Hobson’s choice.

Those in favour of a road bridge, I believe, didn’t turn out because they thought that it was an obvious decision and it would happen anyway, the results of the consultation proved that you vote with your feet and do not rely upon others. You have to get out and be counted. What really disappointed me was that our MP along with a large number of Rossington people did not turn up to any of the four days of consultation or talk to me or my fellow councillors but then proceeded to pontificate about what was happening in Rossing-ton in the press. The Easter Eggstravaganza has come and gone with great success. Hundreds turned up and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The weather was excellent and, most importantly of all, it didn’t rain. With the next Parish Council event, ‘The Mega Fun Day’ on Saturday 18th July on the Welfare. It will be £2 entry for adults £1 for 6 to 15 year olds and free for 5 and under. When 30

If there is no road bridge just getting to the doctors, supermarket or even the chippy will be a trek. The fire engines will have to take the long way round and they have 6 minutes to man the fire engine and then 6 minutes to get there. No way across the East Coast Main-line will mean an extra 6 minutes to get anywhere putting lives in danger.

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, Every person and every institution has a birthday and the church is not different. The church’s birthday was at Pentecost day, which is about 50 days after Easter Day. It is also called Whitsun but it does not usually fall on the Whitsun holiday weekend in the U.K. On Pentecost Day, Jesus’ disciples, who were in a locked room because they were afraid of being arrested or persecuted, had a wonderful experience. As they prayed, a rushing wind came into the room and the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also empowered the believers in Jesus to praise God in many languages that they had not learned in the ordinary manner (Acts 2:5-13). The result was that the timid disciples became bold and powerful. They also spoke about the resurrected Christ and the Lord increased their number. Symbolically, this miracle reminds us that the church is multilingual, multicultural, and multiracial. It is a community in which all people are drawn together by God’s love in Christ. The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 3:28: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” We rarely get a heavenly wind and tongues of fire anymore. Nevertheless, God pours out his Spirit upon all who put their faith in Jesus Christ and become his disciples. He also calls us to be a peaceful community that celebrates diversity in its many forms. As we gear ourselves for the general elections this month, I wonder if I can encourage each one of us to vote. This act of voting is part of the power given to us as members of a peaceful community. Not every person in the world has this wonderful privilege so please use it. Secondly, I wonder if I can encourage you to continue to engage with people who may be different from you especially, the under-privileged and people of other cultures and language. It is sometimes difficult but the Spirit of God will help you to do it if you are available. Talking of birthdays, may I take this opportunity to inform you that Harworth Methodist Church is 90 years in 2015? Hurray! As part of its celebration, the church is organizing a weekend of fun and thanksgiving on Saturday 16th May and Sunday 17th May respectively. Events planned for Saturday afternoon include a photo exhibition of the life of the church, a barbecue, games and stalls. An evening concert will crown the day. On Sunday, the Minister will lead a thanksgiving service at 10.30 a.m. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity that the Methodist Church in Harworth has provided for the community over the past 90 year. I wonder if I can take this opportunity to invite each an every reader to come and celebrate with us. Have a blessed season. Yours sincerely,

Tickhill & District Lions Club The fifth Tuesday of the month has historically featured a social event with wives rather than a business meeting and on 29th March twenty nine of us enjoyed a meal, a general knowledge quiz and a chat at the Three Tuns in Stainton where the 63rd of our 65 Giant Easter Eggs was raffled off, and won by Lion Ken Green. Our sincere thanks are due to all the bars, clubs, restaurants and retail outlets which took one or more of our Easter Eggs and especially to all of you who supported the draws for those eggs. Your support, whether for the Christmas Float or any other fund raising initiative means a lot and is great encouragement to Lions in our efforts to provide help when we can. You will be aware that we aim to use the bulk of the funds available to assist local welfare projects and initiatives, but, just like our Government donating a percentage of GDP on foreign aid, we are aware that around the world serious tragedies occur and in many areas acute sickness is rife. Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) is an organisation supported by Lions Clubs which maintains a reserve of cash enabling it to assist urgent problems immediately rather than waiting to raise funds . Funds donated by Lions Clubs like ourselves also help to restore sight to over 3000 people round the world daily through cataract surgeries and have prevented serious vision loss for more than 30 million. 271 million treatments for river blindness have been provided through the building or expansion of 660 eye care hospitals and clinics and the treatment of many thousands of eye specialists and eye health workers. LCIF is therefore worthy of a little help from all of us. Dates for your Diaries On Friday 26th June we are holding a “Summer Bash 2015” in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers and Lions supporters not to miss. Tickets will be £20 with all proceeds to be donated to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. We can be contacted through the following: Email : contact@tickhill-lions.com Phone : 0844 963 2462 Our Website : www.tickhill-lions.com Our Facebook : facebook.com/tickhill.lions

‘The real junk food project Doncaster’ Could you support this community project? We are group of volunteers working to save food waste, we then create tasty nutritious meals that we serve on a pay as you feel basis. Our message is to value food, value people. Food brings us together in a unique and powerful way. All too often we are isolated undervalued and undernourished physically and spiritually by our way of life. We aim to change that. We need volunteers and we need supporter/backers/ sponsors to get our project firmly of the ground. We need a venue we can use regularly, and maybe someone out there has a space empty at the weekends or evenings and we can split our pay as you feel donations? Maybe there are farmers who are saddened to leave their crops rotting in the fields because they weren’t quite right for a supermarket order? Maybe there is t-shirt printer who will donate us some of our own t-shirt merchandise to raffle? Maybe there is an old building somewhere we could purchase cheaply and we can start a fundraiser and renovate it too? We have had a lot community support so far, from embroidered aprons to a website designed and built and even a food hygiene course for 5 volunteers. We have hosted a cafe event in already used business and a dinner event at a community cafe and will continue with our mission this way. People really want to make this happen with us and believe in our message so we are aiming to reach as many as possible. Please like and share our social media pages and do get in touch. Milk kitchen installed at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by DC Interiors A separate kitchen has been installed at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice so that children’s milk can be stored and prepared in one place. The milk kitchen allows nursing and support staff in the Care Team at the North Anston based hospice to store and prepare feeds for children who cannot eat food. The kitchen means that staff can prepare the feeds in one dedicated place, ready to give to children in the hospice’s care. Previously, milk was stored and prepared in the hospice’s pharmacy. Sarah Branson, Care Team Manager, said: “Many of our children require specialist feeds and all have different amounts at varying points throughout a day. It is really important for us to have this dedicated milk kitchen for space and storage and many other reasons – including best practice.” Bluebell Wood has a specialist team of care staff which supports children and young people with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at the hospice. The team looks after children with a vast range of complex medical needs, offering short breaks, day care provision, community support and end of life treatment and care. As it costs £3m a year to run the charity’s vital services, DC Interiors, a company with premises in Maltby, Rotherham, and Edenthorpe, Doncaster, provided and installed the kitchen completely free of charge. Stuart Allen, of DC Interiors, said: “We are delighted to be able to give something back to the community and it’s great to know it’ll make a positive difference. This is one of the bigger charity projects we have carried out recently and we are proud to be supporting Bluebell Wood in this way.” T
