“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today” H. Jackson Brown Jr
As the months fly by, we once again enter the final term of the school year and exam season begins. Good luck to all those families with children and grandchildren studying hard this May. Once again, my family is included this year, with our last set of GCSEs nearly upon my youngest. The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th May. June is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.
Best wishes,

Now it’s official – using an online-only agent is false economy. Good High street agents such as Johnsons achieve more viewings, more offers and in almost 75% of cases a better price than on-line only agents. This is according to research from the ‘The Advisory’, an independent consumer advice group for house sellers, and comes as no surprise to many. https://www.theadvisory.co.uk/estate-agents/online-vs-high-street/

Cause for a Cuppa Happy Easter from Cause for a Cuppa! At the time of writing we are just on the doorstep of the Easter holidays and a fortnight off from school! Regardless of community Community where you might be going or what you community Community might be doing I pray you health, safety and memorable times for you and your family.
That is a lot of money. We are looking at various ways to make this happen including bank loans and international partners. But as a small church, it is tough.
This is where my request for some help I mentioned above enters the picture. I did a little bit of quick calculation. If there are 15,000 people in Rossington and each person would give £5 towards the cost, that comes to £75,000! That is one third of the price! I know not EVERYONE will give but what I was trying to illustrate was the power of numbers. ANYONE FOR
BAGS OF FUN FROM THE
FRIENDS OF
DONCASTER MUSEUMS T The Friends of Doncaster Museums were pleased to receive notification that their bid for support from Tesco had been successful.
This is down to the 'blue tokens' which customers allocated to us in Tesco stores across Doncaster in January and February. The 'Bags of Help' Scheme gives local community organisations the opportunity to raise money for projects which can make a difference in their communities. Our project you may remember was focussed on the imminent 50th Anniversary of the first moon landing. We wanted to celebrate this amazing milestone with a series of events which will enable people of all ages to either discover or rediscover the wonders of science. With the grant from Tesco’s, we will be funding a number of science activities over coming months. These will include siting a mobile planetarium at the museum on several occasions and some 'rocket' workshops. We also feel it is important to remember that our own home, Planet Earth, still has many wonders to be discovered and so we'll also be organising several animals handling sessions, featuring snakes and tarantulas to name only two species. All these events will be advertised widely; some will be pre-bookable. All will be fun! We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us; thanks to you we can offer these events free of charge!

BEE KEEPERS NEED YOUR HELP! T
Actually it’s the bees that need your help. The Asian Hornet has arrived in the UK. It was first spotted here in 2016, and it poses yet another threat to the Honey Bee population. It is extremely aggressive. Worse by far than our native hornet which is not a quarrelsome creature and actually less aggressive than our native wasps. The Asian Hornet ( Vespa velutina) has an unpleasant habit of hanging out at the entrance of a bee hive and as the workers emerge to go out foraging, it bites off their heads. It’s about twice the size of a bee. A small group of these hornets could destroy a hive of bees in a few hours, and then go in and help themselves to the honey. Apart from the sheer nastiness of this behaviour, the threat to the bee population will have a knock-on effect to the pollination of our food crops. Action is needed and DEFRA are set to eradicate this creature in the UK. So here are the distinctive features to look out for: It is about 20mm in length. It has a yellow segment on its abdomen which is mostly black/brown. On that yellow segment is a black triangular mark. It has long yellow socks on all its legs, and an orange face. If you see one please notify the Great British Non Native Species Secretariat immediately by email – alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk and if are able to photograph it, please do so and send a photo too.

Terence Bennett Three cheers for the Crucible and for its production of Standing at the Sky’s Edge, the musical about the Park Hill Flats, following three generations who lived there, charting changing times and cultures, with plenty of wonderful music and Sheffield humour. Artist returns after 50 years! TERENCE BENNET: A RETROSPECTIVE exhibition of paintings and drawings by this Doncaster artist. In September 1967 Terence Bennett became the first artist to hold a one-person exhibition at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Now, over 50 years later, as the Museum prepares to move to its new site at the top of Chequer Road, he is to become the last artist to have a one- person display at the gallery. The large-scale exhibition brings together paintings and drawings produced over a 60 year period, from student works created at Doncaster School of Art in the 1950s, to a series of glowing watercolours fresh off the easel. Terence was born in Doncaster in 1935, the son of a painter and decorator. He knew from an early age that he wanted to paint, and in 1951, at the age of 15, he enrolled at the Doncaster School of Arts
12
and Crafts, where he was taught by T.A Anderson, Eric Platt and Jack Camm. After completing his National Service he taught art at Doncaster High School, while continuing to paint and exhibit locally. As his work developed he became known for his Yorkshire scenes, including images of the mining landscape and costal places such as Spurn Point. In 1973 Terence was awarded the Yorkshire Television Fine Art Fellowship, and over that year produced around 70 works, all depicting the Yorkshire region, some of those paintings are now in the collection of the Bank of England. Throughout his life Terrence has continued to paint, and he has been recognised by inclusion in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London for a number of years, as well as holding many one- person exhibitions in London and across the country. Terence Bennett has been described a ‘a painter of place, someone who identifies with the place he is trying to capture’ and it is this that makes for such a compelling and moving exhibition. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: through May Deli Artists including Neil McGregor, Penny Cawley and Maureen Fisher present FACES a group show of portraiture www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 17 June SYLVIE FRANQUET who reworks found tapestries combining classical imagery and a punk aesthetic. Hello Everyone, Welcome to our fifth write up of the year. How time does fly. However, we are still longingly awaiting those lovely warm sunny days, I personally can’t wait to walk my dogs without being completely muffled up in coats and scarves. I would like to say a big thank you to the other people that have advertised our Mayflower Ball for us, Gazette Newspaper, Eastside Magazine and Don Gill. This has resulted in all of the tables being sold which is a fantastic result. Everyone is so excited about this event and can’t wait for an amazing evening. We unfortunately had to cancel our Table Top sale in the Scout Head Quarters in Tickhill, through lack of interest in table bookings. However, on Sunday the 7th April our Table Top sale at the Sanctuary had an incredible morning and raised more money than they had previously done. This event takes place at the Sanctuary on the 1st Sunday in the month, so please go along and support them. We are holding our usual Sponsored dog walk in Bawtry Wood which is down Martin Lane in Bawtry and starts at 11.00 am. This is an annual event and it is so lovely to see lots of dogs that have been rehomed looking healthy, fit and happy with their new owners. This is one of my favourite events and we just
hope the weather is kind to us. There will also be home-made cakes, coffee and tea available. We have a long term dog in our Sanctuary and we desperately looking for that forever home for him. His name is Gouldie, he is 4 years old and quite an energetic boy. He has been with us 2 years so desperately needs to be in a forever home. He enjoys lots of attention and loves long walks with his carers. Gouldie would be more suited to a home without children also other dogs and cats, he initially had a problem making friends with other dogs, however his carers have been working with him and he is getting much more sociable. He is a very clean boy and also well mannered. If anyone out there can find it in their hearts to come along and check him out, maybe take him for a walk or simply have a play in our paddock that would be amazing.
Hope to see you at our Sponsored Dog Walk. Best Wishes. Margaret Godley Narrow Lane Bawtry 01302711330
Our opening hours are 2-4 during the week. Closed on a Tuesday, 1-4 Saturdays and Sundays.

Are you wearing the RIGHT colour? The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you! there is so much more, the process quickly becomes highly cost-effective because the clothes purchased will always co-ordinate with existing items in your wardrobe. You will no longer throw away hard-earned cash on clothes you rarely wear, and in future everything new you buy will complement you and everything else in your wardrobe. Instead of a depressing array of one-off ’s that clash with each other, you will soon have a truly integrated wardrobe of clothes We’re all different, but we all have and accessories and will be able a unique combination of colour to create the maximum number tones falling within the spectrum of outfits from a minimum of seasonal categories. the individual parts of our body to achieve this. We all come in different shapes, heights, sizes and scale. Your body may be straight or it may be curvy or it may be a combination of both. An hourglass shape needs a different style to one that is round or pear shaped, and if you’re wearing the wrong styles, your figure faults will be glaringly emphasised, and the good points missed altogether. Knowing you look wonderful on the outside has the positive effect of making you feel beautiful on the inside as well. MOVEMENT AND THE BRAIN… Rather bizarrely, in the space of one week, some fascinating information regarding sea squirts has come my way from several different sources. Deeming it ‘a sign’, I thought I’d better share it! It is thought by some contemporary Neurophysiologists, that the primary purpose of evolving to have a brain is in order for us to make complex movements. Without the need for movement, there is no need for a brain. Cue the sea squirt!... A juvenile sea squirt uses its brain to wander the ocean in search of a rock on which to settle and call home. On finding one, it clings to it…and never moves again. No longer needing to move, it no longer needs its brain…and so eats it in an act of auto cannibalism!

The human brain peaked in size 15-30,000 years ago at a time when we lived in a world of dangerous predators. Since becoming ‘domesticated’, the human brain has shrunk by 10%. As our ‘need’ to move is reduced still further, will our brains further reduce in size?!? Of course, in the context of brain science, this is over simplified mulling. As the American physicist Emerson M Pugh pointed out “If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn’t!” Still, I think this is rather thought provoking, if light hearted, and it is perhaps worth parents, teachers and colleagues with sedentary peers dropping this nugget of sea squirt knowledge into conversation. We aren’t short of reasons to get the nation moving more, but here’s another one you might decide to share…

IN THE GARDEN
Scaling the Walls What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena
32
Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upsidedown terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers. Happy gardening!

LEGAL MATTERS
Change to Divorce Law Changes to Divorce law will be made as soon as parliamentary time becomes available according to the justice secretary. This will be the biggest change in divorce law in 50 years. At the moment one party has to allege unreasonable behaviour or adultery if they have not been separated for two or five years. The new legislation would mean only having to assert that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without having to attribute blame or wait for at least two years. There will be a six-month period for reflection before the Decree Absolute is granted. The aim of the overhaul is to reduce conflict
between divorcing spouses. David Gauke who announced the changes said “While we will always uphold the institution of marriage, it cannot be right that our outdated law creates or increases conflict between divorcing couples. So, I have listened to calls for reform and firmly believe now is the right time to end this unnecessary blame game for good”
These changes in divorce law have taken many years to be approved and will be welcomed by divorcing couples and family lawyers once introduced. It is to be hoped that parliamentary time is made available in the near future and the long-awaited changes are finally implemented
It will also be possible in the future for there to be a joint application for a divorce. The changes are long overdue and will hopefully reduce conflict and Head of Family Law, hostility which can be damaging Taylor Bracewell for divorcing spouses and their 01302 341414, children. He has also been keen that the Parish Council getting the best value for money. Two suggestions have been the local Co-op and Weldrick’s Pharmacy. The first one was Quality Mark for English and Mathematics. The academy needed to demonstrate across 10 different criterion how English and Mathematics is: planned, developed, reviewed, targeted and reported on. The assessor found that ‘Grange Lane Infant Academy has established a very strong Senior Leadership Team and committed Governing Body who work together to constantly review progress and look at how the school can improve the progress and attainment of all pupils. All children were enthusiastic about school and were
The second being the Leading Parent Partnership Award. This award recognises how the academy continued its commitment for all staff to work in partnership with parents, families and external agency provision and where necessary to achieve positive, relevant outcomes for pupils that continues to evolve in line with needs. The assessor commented on the impact saying that adapting and
changing to needs is something that the school takes pride in and continues to do in a manner that is open and honest so parents and families feel part of the learning and development journey through the setting. ‘Grange Lane Infant Academy is a family!’ Pictures are three of our amazing school councillors who were involved in both of the awards, they met with the assessors to talk about their school day, what they enjoy and how they learn within the academy.

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS
RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors
We hope you find this update useful. We are aware that some of the issues we are involved with, the Parish council are also involved so rather than write about the same things we have focussed on Doncaster council issues which we hope you find useful. As always we can’t cover every issue so if there is something you feel we should be looking at that we haven’t mentioned, do get in touch and we would be happy to meet.
Lights at Brodsworth Way Park
Every year when the lights go forward there has been a problem with the lights at Brodsworth Way Park. Last year it took months to resolve, but this year the problem was sorted in a few days with a timer being added making it better for neighbouring residents and people using the park.
Litter Picks
As part of the Great British spring clean various litter picks were organised in the village by the councils stronger communities team as well as people who attend the SMILE service. We are regularly contacting DMBC about the need to clean up litter but residents getting involved is making a big difference as well and we know some residents do this regularly so thank you. If you want to get involved in future litter picks do please get in touch.
Holmescarr Road update
An update on last month when we mentioned that Holmescarr Road was going to be patched in preparation for complete surface redressing. This is the update we received about the resurfacing. “The bellmouth of this junction as well as the entirety of Holmescarr was patched out/resurfaced last Friday as part of the surface dressing pre-patching in preparation for the surface dressing in June/July. I’m aware that the remainder of Earl Avenue is in poor condition but is not suitable for a surface dressing treatment and has therefore been assessed for a more wholesale treatment”
Road re-surfacing in Doncaster
From 1 May, on 5 separate occasions, a number of roads will be closed to allow the road to be resurfaced including Allenby Crescent, from its junction with Grange Lane to its junction with Central Drive; Holmescarr Road from West End Lane to Earl Avenue; Grangefield Avenue from its junction with Grange Lane to the end; Grangefield Terrace from Grangefield Avenue to Grangefield Crescent; Grangefield Crescent from Grangefield Terrace to Haslam Road and Haslam Road from its junction with Grangefield Avenue to Grangefield Crescent. Residents will be notified and diversions will be signposted. We have been waiting a long time for these improvements to be made so hopefully the inconvenience will be outweighed by the benefits of an improved service.
Tranquil Grove Garage Site
A few years ago the Mayor gave a commitment to the Radburn TARA that all the former garage sites would be resurfaced and parking improved. The latest site to be done is the former
44
Tranquil Grove garage site. This work has been organised by St Leger and all residents will have been notified.
Do you live on the Radburn Estate?
There is only one Tenants and Residents group left in the village now and Dave and Shirley who run it continue to do a great job. They meet on 2nd Wednesday of every month from 3pm at The Ragusa centre on Radburn Road. All residents and tenants are welcome to attend and it’s a chance to ask questions and raise concerns. You will be made very welcome
Heatherfield Crescent and problems around the Iport
DMBC enforcement and highways officers are looking at the problems that are being caused by vans, lorries and inconsiderate parking near Great Yorkshire Way. As with all new developments there is a need to clarify who has responsibility for which areas and what restrictions are in force. This work is ongoing to minimise the problem for residents.
6 May - May Day Family Fun Day
The Grand Parade is returning to Rossington and will be leaving Holmescarr Centre at 1pm and arriving at Miners Welfare at 130 for the Family Fun Day. If you haven’t seen the Grand Parade before it really is worth watching it. The Fund Day which is the Welfare’s annual event to raise funds to improve the Welfare Building is free admission with live music, fun fair, bouncy castle, face painting, arts and crafts stalls and much more.
Housing issues
As well as our work that impacts on many residents, we also support with individual concerns and this month has seen us contacted by a number of residents who are in need of housing. We are happy to assist and represent residents and do our best to get people the housing that they need. Please contact us or come along to our surgeries.
Social Care Services
As well as been one of your local councillors, Rachael is also on the Mayor’s cabinet and is responsible for services for adults such as home care, OTs social workers and hospital discharge. She is always interested to hear your views about the services you are receiving, not just those provided directly by the Council but for services that other organisations provide on behalf of the Council.

Friday 10 May from 1230-2pm at the café in Holmescarr Centre and from 2. 15 -4 at Miners Welfare on West End Lane. Please get in touch with us if we can assist in any way. Over time the choir's name changed due to force amalgamations and today the choir is known as The South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir, probably the oldest police male voice choir in the UK (94 yrs) with the same charitable ethos. Many concerts both home and abroad have been performed in front of many people and on Saturday 1st June 2019 at Hall Cross Lower Academy School at 7pm the choir will be in concert with guests The Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra, compare is BBC Look North Presenter Phil Bodmer.
Tickets are £10 to include interval refreshments and are available by phoning 01302 539284. Donations from a share of the proceeds are to be made to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and DonMentia, the local Dementia charity group. New members are always sought. Further details on membership can be found at www.sypmvc.org.uk or contacting the choirs secretary on 01302 390579 or e mail malc@ malbee.plus.com

Exciting changes at St Michael’s T We are very proud to announce, after a year of preparation, that ST Michael’s CE Primary will be opening a nursery, in September 2019. This has been a long time in its development but we are very excited that the plans are beginning to come together. The nursery will be run by a reputable private provider. More details will follow. There are many advantages to sending your child to a nursery: 1. When you send your toddler to a nursery at an early age, he/ she will learn how to interact with people. 2. Nursery will help your toddler develop important skills, such as taking turns, listening to others, helping one another, etc. Interacting with other children of the same age can teach your child to communicate better. 3. A nursery program can provide your child with all the necessary literacy skills. Your child will get basic knowledge of the alphabet, mathematical skills, and other fundamental knowledge as well. 4. Nursery will prepare your child for a better time during school, for they will know what to expect in a classroom environment. 5. Since nursery provides children with a space where they can learn appropriate classroom behaviour at a young age, it can help your child develop a sense of self and independence. Your child will not have to waste time trying to get adjusted to other children, the classroom environment and the lessons he/she is supposed to learn after he/she has joined the school. We look forward to developing our St Michael’s family and welcoming more families to our school. If you would like any information then please contact the school for a registration form.

Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 T May 2019. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. Other Doncaster-focussed highlights of the festival, include ‘An audience with Brian Blessed’, Doncaster’s heritage ambassador comes home to CAST recalling growing up here and filming ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ at Doncaster Archives. In 2017 Heritage Doncaster purchased the Conisbrough Court Rolls, 1265-1935, and we have two full days of related events including a number of talks about how you can get involved with the HLF funded project, an insight into the Manor courts and their evolution through time, entertainment from the Doncaster Waites and many free events are being held throughout Conisbrough and Denaby Main. Doncaster Market Place sees the start of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and to celebrate Doncaster’s cycling history, local broadcaster and author, Chris Sidwells talks about Doncaster’s cycling legends including Tom Simpson, a local lad who was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey. The festival has an exciting programme made up of a series of enthralling talks, workshops, walks and events that explore the history of the borough and beyond. Events will be at a variety of different venues and location from morning to evening, so why not discover something new? The festival is organised by Heritage Doncaster and is supported by heritage groups across Doncaster for the enjoyment of all. For full event details visit us online at www.heritagedoncaster.org.uk/festival or contact: Doncaster Local Studies call 01302 734307
