2017 edition

“Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.” Zig Ziglar
I am sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there is a local and mayoral election this month and a general election in June. While this magazine isn’t of a political nature, we are pleased that several of the local candidates have chosen the magazine as a way of communicating with you, their electorate. I hope that you find the information they have provided to be useful to you. The quote above pretty much sums up the one rule I gave to candidates wishing to use the magazines to communicate with you, in that the magazines could be used to positively promote their own policies and promises but not to be negative about anyone else’s. As the months fly by we once again enter the final term of the school year, and enter exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard this May. Once again there are a set of exams being taken in this household – the 4th consecutive year! The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th May. There are sure to be lots of summer events to be included so please don’t forget to get the details to me in good time to publicise your event. Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.
Best wishes,

Adventure time... Cause for a Cuppa! Come on in. What do you fancy today? Cup of tea? 0D\EH D ELW RI %OXH 0RXQWDLQ -DPDLFDQ FRÎ? HH" “Eric, where do you pick that up from??â€? Well, I’m glad you asked. Today we’re going to go down a bit GLÎ? HUHQW URDG EXW Ζ WKLQN LWȇV DQ LPSRUWDQW RQH When you hear the word “adventureâ€? what do you think about? I hope words like exciting, challenging or even scary pop up in your mind. Recently at church, I brought up the idea that the Christian life was never meant to be boring or blasĂŠ. Those early followers of Christ were bold, outrageous, facing the elements, pushing the bounds and doing things they never thought they would. Have you ever considered an adventure? Just this last Tuesday (at the time of this writing) I returned from an adventure. One of our church partners in the USA invited me and a Rosso teen to join them for a week’s work in Jamaica. Jamaica, being in the Caribbean, is connected with heat, beaches and holidays (after all, Richard Branson’s Necker Island is in the Caribbean!) “What was it going to be like?â€? ‌ I wondered. As the plane approached the airport in Montego Bay, the water below was unbelievably clear and a beautiful turquoise colour. Clearing passport control and customs was a bit challenging but, hey, I’m on an adventure. Stepping outside was like walking into a steam room. From Manchester airport 36 hours prior (10ÂşC) we waded out into what seemed at least 35ÂşC. Over the next week we got used to it ‌ or at least developed a way to cope with the heat. (A friend RÎ? HUHG XV WKLV ČŠUXEEHU\ WKLQJČ‹ that absorbed and retained water as you put it around your neck.) Our week was not to be spent in the “all inâ€? resorts. These were gated posh palaces, kitted out with everything you could imagine including 18 hole golf courses,

restaurants and shopping ‌ including their own secluded beach front. Would that have been nice. I guess. But it wasn’t the adventure I was looking for. I wanted to see the real Jamaica. The adventure over those next 8 days was one of travelling up a mountain to several places that were amazing and yet shocking. The team we were part of had been going for 11 years and had built up a relationship with the Cornwall Mountain All Age School. After driving for 45 minutes up a mountain road with potholes the sizes of paddling pools (only SLIGHTLY exaggerating) we arrived at the school. I’ve come to describe Jamaica as the land of contrast. Flat lowland near the ocean vs. the mountains. Luxurious extreme vs extreme poverty. As I walked LQWR WKH VFKRRO Ζ VDZ XQHYHQ FRQFUHWH Čľ RRUV 7KH school was one large rectangular block with old chalk boards (remember those?) separating teachings spaces. It is because every now and again I need to push myself out of my comfort zone to experience an adventure. From this one my perspective has changed. Near the end, we visited a 92 year old man, living on his own back in the woods. His house was nothing more than a shack. A local pastor brought him food so he could survive. As we huddled into his little place, he was apologetic about not having anything WR RÎ? HU XV 'LG Ζ IRUJHW WR PHQWLRQ WKDW KH ZDV EOLQG" But his joy and love for God was inspiring. He didn’t have much .. but he had REAL peace. What a lesson! I know this was quite the unusual adventure. I am wondering ‌ maybe we need to get ourselves out on an adventure .. with your partner .. children. You never know what you may discover about yourself or the big world out there. And as always, the door is open and the kettle is on. :)

Dementia Awareness Week
During Dementia Awareness Week, 1420 May, Alzheimer’s Society is asking everyone to unite against dementia. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer. But awareness and understanding remains low and many families are facing it alone. We have put together some tips to help you be the best CAREGiver possible. Remember, it is very important that you have someone to turn to when the going gets tough. Be patient: It can often take time to get into a consistent care routine. Keeping calm and patient will allow this to happen whilst also respecting your loved one’s dignity and independence. Take a guilt free break: Allowing yourself some alone time to unwind a few times each month will help you to recognise and provide a much better quality of care. Accept that they have changed: The person you care for is unlikely to be the person you know them to be. Accepting this change will help you to stay in the here and now and give the best care possible. Help them feel good: A new haircut or item of clothing can do wonders for your loved one’s confidence and self-worth, so don’t forget to treat them every now and again. Accept help: In order to properly take care of someone else, you need to also be able to take care of yourself. When people offer to help you, it’s okay to accept it. Practice acceptance: Focus on accepting the situation you are faced with the one you are caring for and look for ways it can help you grown as a person. Focus on the things you can control and find the silver lining. Focus on what you are able to provide: It’s normal to feel guilty sometimes, but understand that no one is a “perfect” caregiver. Believe that you are doing the best you can and making the best decisions you can at any given time.
14 ROSSINGTON TODAY
Learn a relaxation technique: Using relaxation techniques can help you feel more rested. They can also help you make time for yourself and don’t have to take lots of time if you’re struggling to make space for activities. Take care of your health: Think of your body like a car. With the right fuel and proper maintenance, it will run reliably and well. Exercise regularly, eat well, and don’t skimp on sleep. Laugh: Laughter is strong medicine for the mind and body and is a powerful antidote to stress. Watch a funny movie, go to a comedy club, and make time for fun activities like bowling or karaoke. If you are struggling to cope as a carer, it is very important to talk to someone to get the help and support you need. Vote For Clive
Stone Your Local UKIP Councillor
Thursday May 4th 2017 Rossington, Bawtry and Austerfield Council Elections Do you feel that we need real change in our local authority? Would you like to see REAL transparency, and common sense policies and fairness for all? Do you want local people to represent you locally? Do you feel your local concerns are being ignored? Do you feel passionate about our local community? Are you tired of listening to the same excuses when we ask for help as I am? A Labour authority that controls every seat on the cabinet, and also chairs the majority of every committee in the council, is this democracy? I think NOT! If you answered YES to any of the above, help me make the changes we need, give me your support to continue the fight on your behalf on issues we all feel passionate about, and that needs resolving. Doncaster is desperate for change and a new direction; I believe we have the perfect chance to send a clear message to Westminster, and the Labour party that we in the North are not going to be ignored, as Brexit clearly demonstrated.
The Council is the people of Doncaster, and your voice is ours, and we will be heard!

Rossington Parade and &RPPXQLW\ $UWV 3URMHFW We have been very busy during March and April making pieces for the Grand Parade on 1 May, starting at Holmescarr and ZRUNLQJ LWV ZD\ ZLWK PXVLF RI GLÎ? HUHQW NLQGV DQG ORWV RI FRORXU to the Welfare, via Queen Mary’s Road. The plans are in place to show Rossington as Past, Present and Future with appropriate creations representing key parts of our village – all made by children and their parents, and volunteers, with help from artists from Handmade Parades. They will be bringing a huge robot, and Right Up Our Street is bringing Donco, the mythical monster who has a duck’s head – the Mallard! There’s a mobile time machine too and our Paraders will all be in costume. You should have seen the banners around the village advising you of the workshops, but if you would have liked to have come and want to be involved, we can help with that wish. Phone the numbers below for what you may be able to do to join the Parade. We’ll tell you where to meet and when. Come on, come and join in! If you can’t do the walk around, make sure you are watching along the route and at the Welfare. If you would like to know more about joining in, ring Sharon on 07899 805247 or Elaine on 07771 672561. We had a call from Auckley Show to take the Parade there, and whilst we can’t do that, we will have a stall with some of the pieces and show people how to make them. That’s in mid-August. The artists have been in schools showing children how to make some of them on their ‘Stay and Make’ days when parents help with art and crafts.

Update from Councillor
Rachael Blake The Easter Extravangza organised by the Parish Council was a great event and despite the rain many families attended and enjoyed the rides, stalls and face painting. As this will be my last update before the election I have included answers to a number of questions that I am often asked which I hope you find useful. Rossington Activities Programme (RAP) – I mentioned in my last update that the community groups that I have been working with for the last 6 months were due to meet with the Parish Council to discuss funding the activities. I am delighted to say that the Parish Council will be providing funding so for the 6 weeks holidays there will be free activities for 0-19s including sports, music, crafts, street art, song writing and Rossington’s Got Talent. Please come along on 1 May to the Welfare and find out what’s happening and get your children signed up for the activities. We are also working with parents of children with disabilities to make sure that the activities can include all children and young people. 1 May Grand Parade and Event - This will be fantastic for the village and everyone can take part in the parade – with a past, present and future theme, workshops are being held at Holmescarr for you to make your costume and all ages can get involved. The Parade will finish at The Welfare where there will be lots for all ages and you can find out about RAP. Radburn garage sites – St Leger are still committed to completing one garage area each year and I was pleased that St Leger attended the Radburn Tara (2nd Wednesday of every month at 3pm at Ragusa Hall) to tell residents what will be happening. DHL – The site has planning conditions and therefore they should not be going through Rossington unless in exceptional circumstances. Due to the work around the A1 lorries haven’t been able to use their normal route but on 9 April, the diversion ended and DHL lorries should be sticking to the route in their planning conditions. Holmescarr Wood – Harworth Estates are aware of the blockages and the awful impact this is having on the wood. When I spoke to them they 42 ROSSINGTON TODAY
DMBC Councillor
said that in April they would be using a camera to investigate exactly where the blockage is under West End Lane and then clear it. Bankwood Lane – many residents would have seen the fly problem that has affected large parts of the village feature on Look North news. I have been in almost daily contact with DMBC and the Environment Agency since I visited a resident in Bankwood Crescent a few weeks ago and encouraged all residents to report the problem on 0800 807060. The lorry park planning application has still not been decided and this is expected now at the end of May. Nuisance quad bikes - Specially trained officers carried out an operation on 26 March – 19 warning notices issued and an illegal motorbike were seized. Residents are encouraged to report any sightings and problems quad bikes are causing via 101 or enquiries@soutyorks.pnn.police.uk Phase 2 FARRS – preliminary work on this has started and May sees the work start properly and it will be completed by May 2018. Golf course –further surveys are being completed and there isn’t a date yet when it is expected to be discussed by the Planning Committee As I mentioned at the beginning, 4 May is the local elections and I won’t know whether I am still one of your councillors until 5 May so if I am re-elected surgeries will start again in June. I would like to finish my update by saying thank you to everyone who has contacted me, attended my surgeries and for making me feel so welcome in the village wherever I have gone. I have resolved individual problems for over 500 people as well as dealing with issues that are affecting the whole community. More details about me, Mick and Kevin who are both from the village are included in this edition. My contact details: Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading this. Kindest regards

'0%& &RXQFLOORUV Councillor John Cooke and Councillor Clive Stone. Hello once again Good residents of Rossington. Good news from George at the “I-Port, Academy “, based in The Welfare, West End Lane. There will soon be more employment opportunities at Amazon. The company is looking for 500 full-time positions (Not-Agency jobs ) with more to follow. There will be a Training day at the Keepmoat ( to be announced ) and prospective employees will learn at the end of the day, if they have been successful. Good Luck to everyone attending. The introduction of the villages mobile Vehicle Activation Sign is a step closer. An agreement is close to being finalised with Doncaster Council for legal permission to deploy this sign around the village. Hopefully this will have a very beneficial effect by reducing speeding and reminding drivers to keep to the limit. It is pleasing to see that most DHL HGVs have returned to their original routing system to enter and exit via Harworth and not through our village, now Blyth Roundabout is open to two-way traffic. It is still a shame that certain companies ignore our requests for adherence to the legal agreement with DHL and we will be taking up the situation with DMBC planning enforcement team. Sadly as usual we are still fighting the blights that affect our village. The Guilty firms on BankWood Industrial estate are still creating problems and ignoring the enforcement notices served in many instances. We continue to press and pressure all parties involved for compliance and we are still holding regular meetings with key stakeholders to resolve and implement the much needed and necessary relief road.
near the Duck pond, this giving rise to speculation. We can report this was an Archaeological survey and unfortunately nothing seems to have been discovered. An important note though is a new planning application is being put forward by Bawtry Golf Club and information about this development will be found on Doncaster Councils Planning Portal when it is submitted. Although there are few dramatic announcements this month, we have continued as always to serve and tackle the numerous issues raised by you the residents. Litter, Dog fouling, Housing, blocked drains and repairs are only some of the ongoing issues people are encountering. The preservation of Green Space and open communal areas are succeeding and some retention of Garage sites has addressed some concerns. As you are possibly aware there are DMBC elections on the 4th of May. These are for YOU to choose your 3 Doncaster Councillors for the Rossington Ward and the elected Mayor of Doncaster. We would like to encourage everyone eligible to use their vote and participate in local democracy, essential for our community. CLLR JOHN COOKE and CLLR CLIVE STONE are happy to welcome your support and VOTE on the 4th MAY. VOTE COOKE & VOTE STONE for DMBC COUNCIL. We are very happy and pleased to receive all enquiries and issues. Please feel free to contact us or attend our surgery. 1st Wednesday of every month at the Memorial Hall, McConnell Crescent, Rossington.
