For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! The December issue will be delivered to you late November, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th November. This will of course be the Christmas issue, and it is always a jam-packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas Fairs and celebrations. Cause for a Cuppa Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. Last month I said that we would have an answer as to our position with the former Methodist building.
this to her as a retirement gift. She was able to enjoy a small amount of time with her family before cancer took over. But it wasn’t much.
This will be a two part comment. First of all, we weren’t able to come up with any reasonable offer close to the £240,000 asking price by end of September. So the auction is set for 30 Oct which will be when the story completes. By the time you receive this Rossington Today, the auction would have happened. I’ll fill you in with what happened in the December edition. Thank you for your patience.
I had to wrestle with this. She was not able to experience her grandchildren growing up and all that life had to offer. She was not able to see our lad get his promotion or son finish school. It hurt. But I had to realise … “Where is it written that we are all owed 90 or 95 years of relative health, financial freedom, 2 yearly holidays abroad, etc.” Life is unfair and painful. It’s far more about how I deal with stuff because life just happens. The Lion King called it the “circle of life”. The emotional layer is tough and we must grieve.
Last month we were thinking about a subject that we all experience. The subject is “pain”. We thought about the reality of physical pain and the reason for it. God designed us for physical pain in order to protect us and to let us know when something is wrong. That’s a relatively easy one to understand. I know some who are in great emotional pain right now. It is due to the death of a loved one or close friend. It seems that recently, FaceBook has been filled with accounts of Rossington people passing away. “Eric, if God is meant to be all powerful and can heal people, why doesn’t He do it all the time?” That is a good question. But it’s not a simple one. When we ask this question, it almost always is not from our head or a desire for knowledge or facts. It is from a heart that is in great pain and hurt. There are at least 2 layers going on here. One is an emotional layer. One is an intellectual layer. The emotional layer has no clear cut path. Mum died 8 years ago. She just retired from 35 years as a civil servant with the federal (national) government. Three days later she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was a good person. She worked hard. She loved her children and sacrificed for them. It seemed so unfair that life or GOD would present Messy Church (3:30-5:30) 12/13 Nov (Tues/Wed) £1pp donation *Child must have an adult

But as a Christian there is the mental layer. It helps massively. One day, death will be no more. That is the hope (positive expectation) for the follower of Christ. Just as Jesus arose from the dead, each follower of Christ will experience that as well. Also I now am able to truly empathise with people who are going through this. In addition, we must remember that Jesus suffered betrayal, rejection, hunger, thirst, wrongful judgment, loss of friends just like we do. Then He died via the cruelest forms of Roman execution … the cross. You see, God does not just watch our suffering from a distance but knowing the reality, entered into our suffering. Psalm 23 is probably one of the most well know passages in the Bible apart from what is commonly called the “Lord’s Prayer”. There is a phrase “… though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear no evil for you are with me”. The reason why losing family or someone we care about is that we were not designed for death. God created us for life. Sadly the events in the Garden of Eden resulted in death. But there is hope. Grieve? Yes. But hope that is in Christ is great hope. Thanks for allowing me to pop in. As always, the door is always open and the kettle on.

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust T
Here we are hurtling towards the end of the year and preparations have gathered pace for our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate….see below. We have received donations from some wonderful people who have taken our prostate cancer appeal to heart. Darren held a coffee morning in his garden (with marquees to shelter from the rain!), plus a raffle with prizes donated from local firms, and raised £550! Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had donations from people celebrating special birthdays and anniversaries and requesting donations in lieu of presents. Our regular coffee morning ladies in Hatfield also continue to support us for which we are very grateful. Space limits us to mention everyone, but all our latest news is on the website, although we appreciate not everyone has a computer. At the time of writing (early October) we had reached £33,200. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre starts Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. We have chosen some lovely new tree decorations this year so please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer please do get in touch with us. Daisy and her buddy, Mollie, came into our care as their previous owner was moving and her partner was allergic. She has taken a while to settle in but is now gaining confidence and beginning to blossom. Daisy is by far the confident of the pair and can usually be found at the front of the pen ‘shouting’ to anyone who will listen.
Margaret Godley
Although Daisy and Mollie came from the same home, they aren’t really best buddies, Therefore, although a home together would be purrrrfect, they can be rehomed seperately should the right home come along. Daisy would be better rehomed as a single cat if not homed with Mollie.

Defibrillators for Rossington T
Rossington Parish Council has fully funded 4 defibrillators for the village that are available to the public 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The first 3 are sited at the Fire Station on West End Lane, the Miners Welfare on West End Lane (see attached photo) and Weldricks Pharmacy on Grange Lane. All these establishments have kindly funded the cost of installing and fitting the defibs so a huge thank you to them all. The fourth one will be on Gattison Lane so watch this space. who not only respond to critically ill members of the community, but Paul has registered all the defibs with the Ambulance Service so when anyone in the village calls 999 they will be directed to their nearest defib. The goal has been to ensure ALL residents are near to one of the defibs. Within the last few weeks THREE defibrillators have been used.
The Parish Council are now raising funds for a 5th defibrillator to be sited at Brodsworth Way Pavilion. Half of the money has already been raised at the Summer Festival so thank you to all those who supported the raffles over that weekend. The rest will hopefully be raised at a race night at Rossington Memorial Hall on 26th October (should you be one of the first to receive this magazine just ahead of this date and wish to attend please contact Anne or Zoe on 864731 for tickets at £5 to include pie and peas)
Paul has also registered the Defib at Rossington Memorial Hall as part of a new scheme for defibrillators that are available only during certain times of the day, so in effect that makes 7 defibs in the village. This was in direct response to Mini Me’Zzz Nursery raising concerns to Paul.
The Parish Council also supported St Michael’s School PTA who worked hard to fund raise for the sixth defib.
The Council has also part funded a defibrillator for Rossington Main Football Club as they have over 400 players.
The leading light behind this project is Paul Reed who is one of your local First Responder Team

One of our receptionists, the lovely Liz, recently asked me about CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME (CES) having read about it in a newspaper/magazine article. It is a rare but serious condition which can be tricky to diagnose. Delayed diagnosis can lead to long term life changing complications…educating clinicians and the public alike is vital to raise awareness and initiate timely intervention. Cauda equina means ‘horses tail’ and describes the bundle of nerves at the very bottom of the spinal cord. Compression of these nerves can be caused by numerous conditions and requires urgent surgical intervention. There are some distinct symptoms that should lead to a suspicion of CES… Bilateral sciatica – nerve pain affecting both legs Saddle anaesthesia (numbness/loss of sensation) – your saddle is any part of your body that would be in contact with the saddle of a horse and includes you buttocks, anus, genitals and inner thigh Altered bladder function – difficulty initiating urination, inability to urinate, loss of sensation during urination, inability to feel when your bladder is full Loss of anal tone – resulting in the inability to prevent a bowel movement or loss of sensation when opening your bowel or using toilet paper Sexual problems – loss of sensation during intercourse or an inability to achieve an erection or ejaculate If you have any of these symptoms then you need to attend A+E where further investigations can determine the cause. CES is rare, and only a small percentage (10%) of people who are suspected of having CES actually do…however, time is of the essence and any degree of suspicion should be acted upon immediately.

COMMUNITY
Connecting the Community Project T
With funding from the Council, we are embarking on a three-year project that covers Rossington, Bawtry and Austerfield, and intends to help us become more knowledgeable about the services, activities and events in our three separate locations. The administration of the project is based at Holmescarr, but it will help you to engage more with all the community centres in the village, and hopefully will include the cafes and shops too. We would like to get us all talking so that no-one will feel isolated or alone. Similar projects exist elsewhere in Yorkshire, but this is the first one in the Doncaster area. It relies on volunteers to expand the network of links to each resident and will ultimately be led by those volunteers spreading the network. In the coming months, you will see the white, pink and blue badge and know that those wearing them are aware of the project or are instrumental in making it all work. We shall give out badges at events when we explain more about the project. However, if you look closely, you may see the writing on the badges is more than just ‘Connecting the Community’. There will be badges indicating a ‘Connector’ who will be a key person in helping others to find something that they need to help with their lives, or will link the person with an appropriate organisation or professional, to meet a need they have been able to talk about with the Connector. You probably already know some of these people as they are relaxed and sociable when talking to others. They want to help. The second role will be that of an ‘Ambassador’. This person is more reserved but knows where to find the Connectors and will tell you about the project and how you and those you know can benefit. The project is all about helping. You might want to visit one of the centres or have a meeting, but you need some support. You might not know what services are on offer locally to make your life easier. Connectors and Ambassadors will help you with that support and knowledge, and they can arrange to meet you for a cuppa in any of our village’s cafes or meeting places to discuss some more. If you prefer to meet at home, you can be assured that our volunteers will be vetted and maintain confidentiality.
Doncaster Ramblers T
is pleased to announce the arrival of its latest walks programme
Available free of charge from
• The Tourist Information Centre • The Doncaster Central Library • And on- line from our website www.doncasterramblers.org. uk/walks/walks-programmeprinted-version.html Our walks continue every Saturday and Tuesday and also alternate Thursdays all the way through the winter. We have a great selection coming up, including local walks and some slightly further afield. There will even be mince pie walks as well as though involving a pub lunch! To find out more please do check out our walks programme and come along and join us.
Essentially, we want to get the community talking to each other: to help each other and to know more about what is available. Look out for those badges and have a chat. Break the ice with your neighbours and make new friends.

COMMUNITY
A Caring Community at Tornedale
T
The Tornedale community has been busy helping charitable causes since its return in September. On Monday 16 September we took part in the NSPCC “Speak Out, Stay Safe” programme. Kirsty from the NSPCC came into school to speak with children about abuse in all its forms. The School Council then decided to organise a sponsored colour run and raised over £500 for the NSPCC so that they can continue to support vulnerable children across the UK. All our families have been affected by Cancer in some form and we wanted to show our appreciation to the Macmillan Cancer Support team by hosting a Coffee Afternoon on Friday 27
September. Our kind parents and staff helped by bringing in home-baked and shop-bought goodies and along with the sale of drinks we managed to raise a fantastic £327. We have built up a good working relationship with the Rossington Food Bank and each week have a collection from our trolley in the School Reception of donated items. Pastor Simpson came into school on Tuesday 8 October to deliver the Harvest Festival Assembly to our children and we collected lots of non-perishable goods to share with those in
need. If you have any items for our Food Bank collection please call into school and drop these off – they are collected every Thursday morning by the Food Bank team. If you are considering Tornedale for your child next year and would like to view our school, please contact the School Office on 01302 868387, to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Keeping Mentally Healthy at St Michael’s
At St Michael’s School, we have been learning about mental health and how we can help someone that is sad and how to make them happy (like going up to them and having a chat or letting them play with us).
We had special assemblies each day of the week to discuss what mental health is. The children had the opportunity to share their feelings and learn about how when someone says that they are fine that they might not be. It is important to listen to people and give them a chance to share their worries. Every day during mental health week, the children of St Michael’s were allowed to bring in 50p to purchase a yellow badge to show that we support mental health. It was fantastic to see so many children and adults wearing their yellow ‘mental health’ badges. They will continue to be on sale after the week ends.
T
On the day of World Mental Health Day, we watched a live show on BBC all about mental health and why it is important to talk about it. We had lessons about how to support people to cope with difficulties and how to keep our brain healthy. The video also taught us about how to cope with these feelings and how to help others. This helped me to feel safer because I know what to do now. We learnt how to be patient and keep calm. We also learnt how to de-stress. I think it is important to have a mental awareness week because it will encourage children all around the world to have a growth mind-set about what they are doing. This week made a lot more people feel good about themselves because more children are complementing each other. Thank you for reading our report.

Visit to Eco Power Environment in Hull You will be aware that the Parish Council has been working hard to address issues raised by residents re the recycling plant on Bankwood Lane. They have invited Cllrs and residents to visit their flagship site in Hull. The Clerk is writing to them to confirm a date for the visit
Village Pump and Memorial Hall Garden Congratulations and a huge thank you to the ‘Smile’ Dig it n Grow group who have done such a great job planting up and maintaining the Village pump and the Memorial Hall garden this year. huge thank you to them on behalf of Good Neighbours Meals on Wheels for their kind donation. Indian Culture Night Even though this was not a Parish Council event, it is close to our hearts as the Council is Custodian Trustee to the Memorial Hall. Calvary Catering not only provided the tastiest of Indian foods from differing regions of India, but the entertainment was excellent too. The evening opened with a prayer song sung by two young boys Joachim and Jerome Mundakal followed by a Bharatanatiyum dance by Jovan Joseph with the Anchor Georgia Mundakal. After we’d wined and dined on the best of cuisines, we ended the evening dancing off the calories showing off our Bollywood moves. It was such a fantastic night that everyone who attended wanted to know when the next Indian Night was going to be.

LI O NS in Rossington Local people need you
Can you believe that in the 21st century we still have people sleeping on the floor with no carpets, just a blanket and pillow for comfort. There are people who, through no fault of their own, cannot feed their families. There are young single mums, disowned by their families, trying to hold down a job and be a good parent despite little support.
There are people with disabilities and elderly people who have given everything for this country who now find themselves alone and socially isolated. This isn’t in some far off, third world country but right here across the district we all call our home. We don’t make a ‘song and dance’ about the support your generosity allows us to provide but believe me, it is very much appreciated by the people we help with food and the basic home comforts we all take for granted. We also support school projects that broaden the minds of our youngsters. We also support a wide variety of community groups. All of these support local people and make our community a place we are all proud to call our home.
We Need You!
Would you like to get involved with raising money to support people in need? Do you like to socialise and have some fun whilst helping others? We are 34 men and women from diverse backgrounds and ages from about 30 upwards with one thing in common – we want to make a difference by helping people and community groups across our district. We need like minded people like YOU! If you would like to get involved or if you think we may be able to help you or a community project please get in touch. Call in to Rossington Labour 5th Nov 8.30pm or Royal Oak 19th Nov 8.30pm to have an informal chat.

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS
RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors
The Pride awards were held in September, organised by the Parish Council and we both were delighted to attend. The evening was a great opportunity to celebrate Rossington people who are making a big difference to the village. It was great to see all the people who had been nominated including the children who are involved in the Keeping Rossington Tidy group. Well done to you all! November sees the bigger and better Fireworks display – again organised by the Parish Council on 5 November at the Welfare. Thinking of Christmas? Sunday 17 November sees the return of the Christmas market at Miners Welfare. There will be numerous stalls, live entertainment and lots of children’s Christmas activities. It’s free entry and everyone is welcome from 11am – 4pm. In this update we provide info on the Iport, buses, DHL, Bankwood Lane, footpaths around Rossington.
Footpaths around Rossington and Cycle Paths
You may have seen that overgrown hedges and bushes have been cut back to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Also we attended a meeting recently to hear about Sheffield City Region money that had been provided to improve the cycle paths around the village. Further details will be available in future updates. If there are any areas that you want to see improved, do please get in touch.
Footpaths on West End Lane
Following us contacting Highways officers, footways on West End Lane Rossington, (particularly near to the Welfare Club) were inspected by an experienced officer and whilst the footway looks to be in a poor condition, most of the defects are limited to the surface course only and are only very shallow in depth, and do not meet the criteria for safety repairs, (generally 20mm+). Although there are no planned works at the present time, it will be considered in the future for a possible maintenance improvement scheme, but this will be subject to the availability of resources and assessed against borough wide needs of the whole network.
42
Changes to buses
From November, the following changes will be made to buses. • Services 55 and 56 (First) - Additional journeys will serve the iPort, mainly after 6pm, to improve access to employment. • Service 205 (First) - All journeys will serve the iPort to improve access • Service i4 (First) - Additional journeys will be added to improve access to employment at the iPort. We welcome all investment to the village so the Iport developments have been great for the village but there are some ongoing issues that need to be addressed so that these new developments don’t affect residents.
DHL
Mick continues to work with the council’s enforcement team and residents to monitor lorries not adhering to the agreed lorry route. At present, there are fewer lorries ignoring this agreement, but Mick will be continuing this work – do contact him if you have concerns.
Bankwood Lane
There were problems with lorries backing up onto Bankwood Lane making it dangerous for drivers and children walking to school. This seems to have been a one off, but we asked Highways officers to attend as well as the police which they did and will do if the problems occur again. The eyesore which is the rubbish that Eco power (formerly Attero) have accumulated continues despite our efforts to get this reduced and removed. We are in touch with the council’s enforcement team regularly and we are hoping that action is going to be taken to improve the area for everyone who lives nearby as well as everyone that has to go past it.
Iport
As we mentioned in our last update we have been raising the concerns about parking on the land at the roundabout and the problems with lorries in Lidl. Due to our persistence to get this issue dealt with the Council’s Chief Executive met with

Iport managers to raise these concerns. Shortly after the meeting, it was great to see a barrier put up presenting lorries and vans parking near the roundabout which has made a difference. Work is still ongoing to stop the lorries at Lidl but hopefully with a new company opening a lorry park on the Iport there will be no need to use Lidl as a car park.
