Welcome to the
October
2019 edition
Today
Arconda Logs Seasoned hardwood barn dried and kiln dried firewood logs.
“Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.” Elizabeth Lawrence October again already, for me 2019 is flying by. No sooner have the children returned to school, then Halloween is upon us and the countdown to Christmas begins! My usual October reminder is that if you wish to be organised this Christmas then now is the time to start searching through these pages and get things booked in. Everyone gets increasingly busy as the festive season gets nearer – many are already taking bookings for 2020. Whatever you want to get done before Christmas, be that shop for supplies and gifts, revamp your home, lose weight, sort your accounts or any of 101 other things, you are sure to find someone to help you in this magazine. Just don’t forget to tell advertisers where you found them please! The November issue will be delivered to you late October, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th October. Remember we are heading into the busy PreChristmas season so please plan ahead and get the details of your events and fundraisers to me in good time so I can ensure they are promoted for you. Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine.

Cause for a Cuppa Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. By the time the next Rossington Today rolls around, there will be an answer as regards to our bid for the Methodist building. So we’ll leave off any comments regarding that till then.
There is a condition called CIP (congenital insensitivity to pain). Literally it is a situation where someone does not feel physical pain. You (and I) may initially say, “Sign me up!” But wait a moment. Is that what you really want? There are some variations to this condition and one is the insensitivity to temperatures as well. You wouldn’t be able to know whether you are boiling hot or freezing to death. The victim cannot sweat and 20% die from hypothermia by 3 years old.
Yesterday was an unusual day. Someone approached community Lisa at church andCommunity asked … “If God is all-powerful and can community Community heal us, why do we hurt and have pain/suffering?” That comment didn’t make the day unusual. Arts Review & what’s going on - OCTOBER 2019 •
There have been some shows worth beating a path to this summer. At the YSP, which is always worth the trip even just for a good walk there is a wonderful show by the American sculptor David Smith. The Park has imported work, some of which I was not at all familiar with, which is lyrical and of the landscape. Smith was known for his hard edge and challenging steel and stainlesssteel sculpture, he moved Sculpture into abstraction and was very much working alongside the post-WW2 Abstract Expressionist movement in the USA. The curators have brought together work which fits with the Yorkshire landscape and is a complete knock-out. I can’t recommend it enough. You don’t have to be too canny to avoid the dreadful Hirst’s which abound on the north east lakeside. The catalogue describes them as a ‘powerful presence’, all they have going for their vast brightly painted scale is the Hirst shouting loudly ‘I can afford the foundry fees!’ Yorkshire Sculpture Park Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) see above. Until 3 November in the Longside Gallery is an exhibition about art and child development. It would be nice if the education tinkerers would take note. www. ysp.co.uk Scrooby Community Cinema: October 20th Doors 7:30 Start 8:00 Double Bill - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE and THE ROSE with food served between and licensed bar. film: £4 on the door in Scrooby Village Hall further information email: film@scrooby.net National Trust, Hardwick Hall Wednesday – Sunday, 11am-5pm until 3 November. After receiving high levels of interest and popularity, ‘WE ARE BESS’ photographic exhibition has been extended. The exhibition features 20 modern women, from household names to the local community, including Sue Perkins and The Right Reverend Libby Lane. These women responded to the retold story of Bess of Hardwick, the woman who built Hardwick Hall, and reflect on the similarities

Local animals need you. T
Now the excitement of summer has passed, your thoughts may be turning to starting something new and challenging to fill your time. Volunteering for a local charity is
a fantastic way to meet new people and learn new skills. RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre, near Bawtry, has some vacancies, which may appeal to you. The local RSPCA is looking for a Trustee, who can make lasting links with local businesses providing opportunities for the Animal Centre to gain support for their vital rehabilitation and rehoming work. If you have a strong network of local business contacts, feel passionately about our work fighting animal cruelty and could provide the link between the Animal Centre and local business, then you could help the charity expand further.
Ha l l o we e n Pa r t y. Hosted By Darius Cooper of Limitless Events
Tickets NOW on Sale @ Rossington Miners Welfare
BUT REMEMBER NO TICKETS NO ENTRY!!!! Saturday 26th October 2019 6pm - 11pm £2 per person Plus - Food and tuck shop
Your volunteering skills may lie in a more practical direction? The Centre would love to hear from anyone who can turn their hand to gardening and general maintenance tasks. The site is based in a rural area, which needs round the year attention. The time and attention you could give the grounds will be key in maintaining the high standards the charity has for its Centre. If you are interested, please send an email to info@rspcadrb.org.uk and the Animal Centre looks forward to hearing from you. The Animal Centre team re-homes hundreds of rescue animals each year. The charity’s mission is to rehabilitate and rehome vulnerable animals and this rehabilitation and re-homing work relies on kind donations from the public. Proceeds from events that the local branch of the RSPCA organises and donations/sales at its charity shops provide the necessary funding. Visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk for more information.

St Luke’s Church New Rossington
St Joseph’s continues to be GOOD! T
St Joseph’s School are delighted to announce that following their Ofsted inspection on the 12th July 2019, we continue to be a good school. During the inspection, it was found that parents and carers, staff and pupils speak highly of the school. Our pupils speak positively about the school and its values, stressing that it is one that is caring and one that encourages everyone to look after one another. We were delighted that our inspector endorsed the high expectations set in all our classes. In all lessons observed, and all books scrutinised, the quality of pupils’ work was of a high standard. Teachers provide pupils with the guidance they need to successfully deepen and extend their learning. In the lessons observed, pupils were keen to take part in all the activities and tasks set for them. The pupils’ books scrutinised were well presented, with no examples of untidy or careless work. Pupils told the inspector that the school is welcoming of everyone. Pupils talk proudly and happily about their school. The report states that the leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. We have created an environment where pupils, teachers and staff work alongside each other so that everyone enjoys a beneficial learning experience. Mrs Kelly and the St Joseph’s leadership team would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, children, parents – the whole St Joseph’s Community - for your contributions to our wonderful school. We are very excited for what the future will hold!
Invite you to celebrate their
Patronal Festival On: Friday 18th October At: 7pm Come and enjoy the service, bring along your family and enjoy seeing the church in all it’s glory. Refreshments will be served after the service.

KEEPING FIT IS GOOD FOR YOUR MIND AS WELL AS YOUR BODY! There is plenty of information around at the moment about mental health and how it is good to talk. Here at Blizard Physiotherapy we also really believe that keeping fit is vitally important for your general mental well-being. Daily physical activity helps us to feel good about ourselves and gives us a sense of achievement even if it is only a brisk ten-minute daily walk. Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. The main things to consider when choosing a form of physical activity is making time daily for exercise, is it the right type of fun activity that is going to be manageable moving forward and is it the right type of exercise for you? Our best advice is choosing something you like doing, start slowly and make it part of your daily lifestyle and consider making some shortterm goals that you can try to work towards. Break it into three sections of exercise you can do at home, at work and when out and about and you will soon start working on a program!
Good luck!

Are you taking on a Commercial Lease? If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial property tenant it is vital to understand what you are taking on. Signing up to a commercial lease is very different from renting residential property, with a range of responsibilities that can come as a big surprise if you’re not prepared. Here are some questions that every prospective commercial tenant should ask before agreeing to any tenancy: 1. What am I actually leasing? Is it an ‘eggshell’ lease/whole of property/surrounding land? This is relevant to repair obligations too. 2. What have I agreed to ‘keep in repair’? In a lease, ‘keep in repair’ actually means ‘put and keep in repair’ - you could be asked to carry out works to rectify disrepair that existed even before your lease. The phrase ‘keep the property in good repair and condition’ is even more onerous - be aware of the wording. 3. Can I terminate the lease early? Break clauses can give flexibility, but take note of any conditions limiting your ability to use this. 4. Do I have security of tenure? You may have the right to renew your lease at the end of your fixed term – this can depend on the wording in
your lease and the circumstances of your occupation. A legal adviser can assist you with assessing what your position is. 5. Can I transfer the lease or sublet? Many commercial landlords allow tenants to transfer/ sublet their lease, but only with their consent and subject to certain strict conditions. This could involve you being a guarantor, and paying the landlord’s legal costs when you look to deal with your lease in this way. 6. What other payments must I make? Insurance, service charge, VAT? Do you have to pay the landlord back for the buildings insurance premium? Is the landlord charging you for any services supplied, for example for the repair of any common parts? What amount/percentage must you pay? Can the landlord incur any expenses or are there restrictions? 7. Is the rent fixed for the whole of the term? Can the landlord review the rent? If so, when and on what basis? What happens if there is a disagreement? All of this should be set out in the lease itself. Make sure you know how and when rent review kicks in, so there are no nasty surprises later down the line.

New School Year at St Michael’s. T What a busy summer we have had at St Michael’s CE Primary School! We said goodbye to our amazing year 6 children who were prepared for their next journey into secondary school. They were wonderful ambassadors for the whole school and demonstrated perseverance and commitment in all they did. We wish them well in their new journey and hope that they keep in touch. Our school year ended with another fantastic set of results. 84% (well above national which is 72%) of our Foundation children secured GLD (Good Level of Development) and 92% (above national at 82%) of our Year 1 passed their phonics screening. In our Key Stage 1 tests, 79% (well above national at 64%) of the children secured the age-related expectations or above combined in reading, writing and maths. In all areas of the curriculum, the year 2 children worked incredibly hard and secured above national. As with our year 2 children, the year 6 children worked hard and
26
secured above national levels in all core subjects. 78% (national score is 65%) of our children secured at expected standard or above combined in reading, writing and maths.
We are so proud of all of our children and their passion for learning. Throughout the summer, our building was given a facelift. We secured funding for new windows and doors throughout the older part of our school. To prepare for our new nursery, our year 6 and Moshi area was renovated into a modern Foundation suite. We are so pleased with the finished areas and are looking forward to our Foundation children starting full time soon.
We would like to welcome our new nursery to the St Michael’s team. Making Friends at St Michael’s is a private nursery who already provide breakfast and after school care to our children and have private nurseries around Doncaster. They are an amazing asset to our St Michael’s family. The inside of our school finally represents the high expectations we have for our school; however, our outdoor area does not mirror this. We are now directing our attention on enhancing our outdoor environment and are asking for any help with these areas. If you have an interest in gardening and feel that you would be able to support our school in this area, then please contact our office staff. We would be very grateful. Thank you for reading our report.

Tickets are just £3 pp and will be available from the Parish Office from Tuesday 1 October 2019. Hot food is available from 1 pm and 5 pm, bring your own alcohol. For tickets contact Anne or Zoe. Rossington Community Grants The Parish Council has a small community grant pot for not for profit groups who wish to make a difference in Rossington. For more information and a grant application form contact Anne or Zoe. Bye for now

COMMUNITY
UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS
RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors
Thank you to all those residents who contact us or come to our surgeries with requests for assistance, community concerns and ideas for improvements for the village. To provide some reassurance; sometimes residents have concerns about something happening and want to tell someone. If it’s about crime, Crime stoppers is anonymous, or if you contact us when we raise the concerns if it’s not about something personal to you, we don’t pass on your details so no one knows where the information has come from. We hope you find these updates useful – it’s only a summary of the work we are involved in so do get in touch if you think there is something we are missing.
pace at iPort, The transport operator has agreed a long-term lease on a 4-acre site which will be developed by Verdion into a modern HGV parking facility and will include a 4,000 sq ft (371 sq m) high quality office and amenity building. Maritime will use the new facility to serve existing clients at iPort as well as others in the region. Maritime is also an active user of iPort’s on-site rail terminal, iPort Rail, a Grade A cargo facility operated by Verdion, which is now running daily rail services to/from Southampton, Felixstowe and Teesport serving a number of iPort occupiers as well as other regional, national and global businesses.
Bankwood Lane lorry park – closed at last!
Concerns about country park
After just over 4 years, the lorry park closed at the middle of September. Following the survey of residents in June, the Council listened to residents’ concerns and issued an enforcement notice. This was appealed by the landowners, not Ecopower/ Attero who agreed to stop using the lorry park. This has made a difference to residents in the area who have had to put up with considerable inconvenience. Also we have raised our concerns about the piles of rubbish as you come into the village and we are told that the company are looking to fence this off – no date when this is happening.
Some residents contacted us concerned about what is being left on the country park and what the piles were that could be seen from the road. Environmental Health have contacted Harworth Estates who own the land and they have said that is fertilizer that is being piled up.
DHL Thank you to the residents who contacted us following our last update. Whilst the number of yellow DHL lorries going along Stripe Road instead of the A1 route has reduced, the number of plain lorries continues. Doncaster Council’s enforcement team continue to meet with DHL to ensure that they stick to the route that they were given which avoids coming into the village and going past St Michaels. Problems around the Iport As we reported last time we have been waiting for the manager for the site to arrange a meeting with all the companies to address residents’ concerns – parking and litter left near the roundabout; parking on Heatherfields Crescent causing an obstruction and lorries parked overnight in Lidl and the drivers using the car park as a toilet. The companies haven’t responded to his request for a meeting which is disappointing so this has been taken further by the Council. Having the Iport is great for the village but as we have always said, resident’s lives shouldn’t be affected because of it. A new company is coming to the Iport. Maritime Group, has agreed a deal to take s

Concerns about crossing Sheepbridge Lane Residents contacted us about the difficulties of crossing Sheepbridge Lane around Yew Tree, Littleworth and St Michaels. We contacted the Highways officer who replied that a refuge island would be difficult due to the existing road layout. Please let us know if this is causing you a problem and you have difficulty crossing here. Ragusa hall, Radburn Road It’s great to see the hall being used so much – Keep Fit will be starting soon as well but people using it have been asked by St Leger to be considerate to residents who live close by who have had difficulty getting past when lots of cars are parked following a resident contacting us. We asked as well if more parking spaces could be provided but all the money has been spent this year for improvements but may be considered next year. Meld Close – new sign When Rachael attended the Radburn TARA meeting it was great to see that the new sign for Meld Close had finally been put in. Terry had been asking for this sign when he attended the TARA meeting because it was confusing for people who don’t know the area including emergency services and we have been asking DMBC for this to be put in for a long time. If you have similar problems with your street, please do contact us.

LI O NS in Rossington Gattison House trip to Cleethorpes On Friday 16 th August TIckhill and DIstrict LIons Club took residents and carers from Gattison House, Rossington to Cleethorpes. The weather forecast was grim but nothing could dampen the spirit of the party as we set off. Luckily the rain held off and allowed everyone to walk up and down the promenade taking in the sea air. The highlight of the day was our lunch, fish and chips on the Pier, wonderful! At 3 o,clock we returned to our coach ready for our journey home. The rain which had kindly avoided us now attacked the coach relentlessly. Somewhere near sunny Scunthorpe one of our windscreen wipers surrendered to the rain. We had to park up and await a replacement wiper blade. Lesser mortals would have been despondent at this point, but not us! An impromptu singalong ensued with old favourites like Pack Up Your Troubles and We’ll Meet Again being sung with gusto. We are not expecting a recording contract for our efforts but it certainly passed the time. We arrived home an hour late but everyone agreed that a great time had been had by all.

We Still Need You!
Do you know someone or a community group that just needs that little bit extra help. It could be money, equipment or just someone with time to spare, time to help. Could that ‘someone’ be you? Would you like to get involved with raising money at galas, race nights, firework displays, various raffles, beer festivals and of course our own Santa Sleigh? Could you give some time to help someone in need? Could you investigate requests for help? Do you like to socialise and have some fun whilst helping others? We are 34 men and women from diverse backgrounds and ages from about 30 upwards with one thing in common – we want to make a difference by helping people and community groups across our district. We need new members particularly in Bircotes, Harworth and Rossington. Email: Phone: Website: Facebook:
