“A late summer garden has a tranquillity found no other time of the year.” - William Longgood

It seems that my decision to mention our multifamily Youth Hostel trip last month tempted fate! I said I had my fingers crossed for sunshine, however unfortunately, it rained for much of Saturday and although the sun came out for a lovely stroll around Castleton in the afternoon this was followed by thunder and lightening – which started 10minutes into our visit to the open air swimming pool in Hathersage and led to our early evacuation! We still had a fantastic time, and beautiful weather on the Sunday led us all up Mam Tor with amazing views across the Peak District. Sunshine wasn’t in short supply when I took my daughters out to Lanzarote a few days later, for a sneaky extra holiday that we managed to squeeze in this year, a great time was had by all! By the time you read this I will have also have been on our main family holiday – more about that next month, I am not planning on tempting fate again! The October issues will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Summer is Past... As quick as I said “summer is here” in last month’s Cuppa, I now have to say “summer is past”. Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. I hope you were able to do something special this last summer that you could write in your essay ... “What I did on my summer holiday”. Even more importantly, did you create a memory that someone in your family could write about?

didn’t have much to celebrate during the World Cup. Those big ones are good but aren’t birthday, anniversary, graduation celebrations equally important? A fantastic principle in the Bible is that we are meant to “rejoice with those who rejoice” (Romans 12:15). (We are also meant to mourn with those who mourn but that is a different article.)

Ready or not, we are now into a brand new school year and everything that goes along with that. I hope there will be many things to celebrate this year for you and your children/ grandchildren. As a governor for GLIA/ PBA, I know attendance is always a big subject. Why not have it a goal to have super attendance at school to be able to join in the attendance celebration/ prizes?!

Celebrations are about recognising accomplishments or milestones that a person or organisation has achieved. I have recently enjoyed reading some of the books that long time Rossington residents have written about the village over its history. I read about the May Day events, opening of the Hippodrome and celebrations around various accomplishments of the pit. (Rossington pit was top producer at one time!) Those were days to celebrate. Things change and although the days of the pit celebrations have come to an end, I am convinced there are and WILL be other things to celebrate in future.

Thinking about that for a second ... aren’t celebrations great?! I know we

celebrate a milestone ourselves. We have been organised as a church now for over 10 years. We have met in 4 different locations over that time. I am sure I have an A level in “putting chairs in a row” and “video projector aiming” over that time. Since the Holmescarr Community Centre opened up (has it been 6 years ago??), we have been there. From 1 September, we will have a proper “church sized” space along with an activity area, kitchen and office and children/youth space all for our purpose at Holmescarr. Messy Church will have much less travelling about the building and we will be able to have more on offer. On Sunday, 21 September, 10:30 we will be celebrating our new space. We would like to invite any of our Cause for a Cuppa friends along to help us celebrate! As it is a Sunday morning, I don’t want to pull people from your church if you attend somewhere. But for anyone who is available, why not come down and see what is what. As always, even in the new digs, the kettle is always on and the door is open.

As a church, we are getting ready to

Rossington Councillor’s Update

K

Well, wonders will actually never ever cease, they actually finished Queen Mary’s Road on time and to a high quality. They even have done Duke Avenue as a bonus, it really did need doing, but Earl Avenue is nearly as bad. Well done DMBC and the Highways department. I have personally thanked everyone involved via their boss.

make a decision or run the Council. Unfortunately for them there were too many witnesses! They then complained that they didn’t have enough places on the Scrutiny Panels, and it was Labour’s fault. However, it is neutral Council officers that say how many places each party has. The real reason for this is that not enough people vote for them.

The second phase of the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) will receive more than £9million of funding. This 2km road link between the A638 (Parrott’s Corner) and the Hurst Lane/Airport access road will complete the route from Junction 3 of the M18 to Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. It will reduce journey times further, support development at the new Enterprise Zone at the airport, unlock land for housing and support the creation of a new rail station at the airport.

Eric Pickles Arch Tory and Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has said (and I have a copy of the letter) that when Children’s Services go to a Trust we will be out of intervention. He welcomes the progress Labour has made under the stewardship of Mayor Jones and expects that it will only get better. He signs it’ Yours Ever – Eric’.

Nearly £24million will go into the delivery of town centre regeneration projects including the later phases of the Civic and Cultural Quarter, Waterfront and developments at St Sepulchre Gate West near the train station. Over £14million has been allocated to the DN7 link from Junction 5 of the M18 to Hatfield. This will support a proposed carbon capture power facility, potential low carbon business parks and open up new housing and employment land. The dualling of the A630 West Moor Link between Junction 4 of the M18 Junction to A18 Thorne Road and between the A18 and A630 Wheatley Hall Road will benefit from over £9million of Growth Deal funds. The scheme will facilitate housing development and employment land along the route. We had an interesting Council meeting recently with the Tories trying to change history and claim that it wasn’t them who were in the Cabinet with Peter Davies when the Audit Commission’s Governance inspection found that they could not 10

ROSSINGTON TODAY

So there it is, we will soon be free. The new shelter for the kids using the skate park has now been installed I hope that they appreciate it and I hope that they start to put their litter into the litter bins an arm’s reach away instead of on the floor. When challenged it is always someone else even when you’ve seen them do it. They want flood lights; perhaps to see in the dark to drop litter and miss the bin, we don’t want them to be tidy if they can help it do we? Perhaps they may have to be tidy before they get the flood lights. Kindest Regards

Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club – September News Things are hotting up in the Wheelers own AAD Gas Handicap League with consistent and improving performances by high placed riders ensuring they score points in the jostle for league positions in the keenly contested competition. We could yet have a blanket finish in week 20 with all awards still up for grabs? The competition is certainly set for the closest finish for years (four years in fact since its origination) with just 12 points separating the top four riders with a maximum of ten points up for grabs in each of the five remaining rounds.

Series events screened on ITV. There are three grouped categories within the competition, each week two groups race and one group marshalls the course.

AAD Gas Handicap League – after Round 15 1) Stephen Paterson Leading junior 2) Richard Lunt 3) Brian Pollock 4) Curt Langan Leading veteran 5) John Keen 6) Gary Irvine 7) Gillian Challoner Leading lady

63 points 59 58 51

Unfortunately at the time of writing the JE James Open TT league standings haven’t been updated for the results from recent events so these will be updated next month. The clubs program of summer runs is still in full flow with rides Sunday, Tuesday, AAD Gas League Wednesday and Saturday of different lengths and difficulty. For further details of club activities visit our website www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or our facebook page or call in to see Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue, Rossington.

Safe riding! The handicap basis to the competition is calculated around a riders previous performances against the clock for the 10 mile course compared to the standard par time. Riders begin the competition with their handicap based around their previous personal best (or an allocated handicap based on their expected performance), their handicap is then adjusted on an average of their next three times on a rolling basis to produce their current handicap prior to their next ride. In simple terms slower riders receive a bigger handicap and therefore as they improve their times their handicap is gradually reduced. The handicap allotted to them is taken off their actual time in the event to produce their net time for that event, points are allotted in the competition each week to riders with the fastest net time – 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd etc, down to 1 point for 10th…..that’s cleared that up! Further consistent performances in the last month have seen junior rider Stephen Paterson build upon his first win in the North Midlands Road Race League to hold top spot in his category with 52 points from 6 rounds of racing on the Dinnington circuit. These events are held on road circuits on Thursday evenings, similar to the Tour 12

What is Pilates? Many people have heard of the term Pilates as a form of exercise but are really unsure what it is all about, so here’s the low down. Pilates is a unique method of exercise designed to improve strength and flexibility, using a mind body conditioning exercise program that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to improve overall central core stability and posture. The movements are flowing and controlled with emphasis on training core stability and balancing muscle systems, using mind and body control; these are brought together to achieve these aims through the following 8 sound principles: - concentration, centering, breathing, isolation, routine, precision, control and flowing movement. Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels and is particularly beneficially for those with back pain, poor postures, neurological conditions, mental health conditions, sports injuries, arthritis, stress related illness and before and after pregnancy. The medical world is now realising the benefits of the Pilates method for the prevention and rehabilitation of back injuries. In order to prevent a recurrence of back pain, it is essential to retrain the deep abdominal and spinal muscles. Whilst Pilates is very effective for most people, it is important that you have an individual assessment prior to starting a class to ensure that you learn the underlying principles fundamental to achieving success from Pilates and so that the classes can incorporate your individual needs.

Blooms from Bulbs It may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems. • When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules: • Wear gloves when handling, 22

ROSSINGTON TODAY

as some are toxic and can cause skin irritations • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them. Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any sign of mould (normally grey/blue in colour). • Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is ok • Damaged or split bulbs should not be selected • Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about 3 times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different. • Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development Bulbs can also be grown from seed. They take a good few years to flower, around five in my experience, but it’s very satisfying when they finally do and you can even have a go at cross pollinating to make your own varieties. Other favourites of mine are: Tulip ‘Prinses Irene’, an exquisite orange and purple flower Narcissus ‘Thalia’, a white and scented daffodil Galtonia, an imposing 60cm

tall with grass like foliage and a 90cm high flower spike in white Chionodoxa, with around 10 blue blooms per stalk, this is a small but cheery bulb Happy gardening!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Rossington Parish Council We can and do pick ‘em. The only day it rained in July and we picked it for our Party in the Park, and what rain we did get, we got it in bucket loads. I got wet six times and every time it was worse than the time before! The final downpour could have been in the tropics it was a monsoon with the rain horizontal. I got so wet that my phone died and wouldn’t come back to life. My wallet was full of water and the moths got wet, as were my trainers. I didn’t dry out. The stage and electronics were flooded, so we had to move the bands into the marquee on a smaller, less sophisticated PA system. The only good piece of luck was the placement of the beer tent, by sheer chance it was on the only bit of slightly raised ground on the Welfare, so that gave good shelter and dry feet to all. However the gazebos didn’t fare well, only one of the Parish Council’s 7 survived and they collapsed along with several of the stallholders in the high winds and some collapsed with just the weight of rain. It looked like the giant spiders from Mars had died on the Welfare field after the clear. Musically everything went well, including the talent show, and two performers were particularly good Abi and Alicia, whilst The Song for Rossington appeared to go well, but I was called away so didn’t really see it. The rest of the music went well although not on the stage. But despite this 1500 to 2000 people turned up and enjoyed themselves, mud surfing and everything. No one complained, and everyone thought that it was a superb day out except for the weather. We had comments like ‘this is the biggest and best thing put on by a council anywhere’ and that is a true quote! We even had some classic cars brave the weather! All the attractions were well used and enjoyed, although we the organisers had to put up with some sharp practices from a couple of our suppliers and stallholders. I would like to thank my fellow Parish Councillors who went beyond the call of duty on the day, on the days 26

ROSSINGTON TODAY

leading up to it and the days afterwards clearing up. I would like to thank the Environment Association for their help in stewarding the event and as traffic management. I would like to thank Pheasant Bank Academy for the loan of their grounds for a car park. And finally I would like to thank the volunteers who went out of their way to help especially our two cooks Glen and Bob and our excellent litter picker (16 bags) Ian. During the last month I’ve had a Steering Group meeting with the Rovers Kicks people and wish to mention the Boxing that is now taking place at the Memorial Hall at 6.30pm on a Monday, it’s free and all welcome. I also went to the re-launch of the Rovers Foundation which has morphed into Club Doncaster, I wish it every success. We’ve had a couple of meeting in this shortened month (publishing wise); we had a triple A meeting with Moto the motorway filling station people and from my point of view they were less than convincing. The 300 jobs promised were not all new jobs 150 would be from their Thorne services. It then got worse the more questions we asked and in reality it could mean just 30 part time minimum wage jobs if the expected development went ahead, i.e. just a filling station and a shop. So we may propose that the northern end of UK Coals site is allocated as industrial land. We had a planning committee meeting and had 6 items on the agenda, all went through OK except the retrospective application to build an access to a farmers field across the footpath on Sheepbridge Lane to which we objected and the grounds that the ramp to it was too steep for wheelchair users and pushchairs especially in winter with snow and ice. The access could have been built further to the west with no disruption to the footpath.

The BIG Sleepout The BIG Sleepout - SAFE@LAST's signature event - returns to all four boroughs of South Yorkshire this Autumn. It's an event where people sleep rough for one night to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable young runaways. The event helps to give participants an insight into what it could be like for the many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough. SAFE@LAST is a registered charity working with vulnerable children and young people who have run away from, or have been thrown out of the place where they usually live – or are at risk of doing so. The charity 30

ROSSINGTON TODAY

provides a 24 hour helpline, web chat and text service, support for the young people and their families, an extensive prevention education programme, a team of street workers and, most remarkably of all the only refuge in the UK for children and young people who are under the age of 16. The BIG Sleepout provides a chance for SAFE@LAST to highlight the struggles young runaways face and for people to have a small taste of what sleeping rough on the streets might be like. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no other choice. They do it because they judge their other options as worse than a cold, lonely, dirty night on the streets. The money raised at The BIG Sleepout's will help the charity to continue to ensure that young people across South Yorkshire know they have a safer choice. Come and join us at Lakeside Village, Doncaster on Friday 26th September, Crystal Peaks, Sheffield on Friday 3rd October, Barnsley (Venue TBC) on Friday 10th October or Parkgate Shopping Centre, Rotherham, on Friday 17th October. Get your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you, grab your sleeping bag and cardboard, and help raise funds and awareness for young runaways in South Yorkshire. T

Country night on Wednesday’s

Mark and Debbie Gore from Tickhill in Doncaster have recently been appointed by The Royal British Legion as the new Poppy Appeal Organiser’s for the Doncaster Area. In previous years the Poppy Appeal in Doncaster has raised in excess of a staggering £25,000 each year for The Royal British Legion so we are delighted that Mark and Debbie have offered to take over the organising of the appeal in area. When asked about why they wanted to get involved, Mark & Debbie said “we want to get involved in the local community and also give something back to those who have served our Country. Supporting The Royal British Legion is a perfect way to achieve both.” Mia Senior, Community Fundraiser for The Royal British Legion said “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Legion – without them we wouldn’t be able to support so many serving personnel, veterans and their families with practical help and advice.”

Sept 2014 Mark and Debbie can’t do it all alone and are looking for any extra help.
