Isn’t it lovely to see the splashes of colour created by Spring flowers and to once again feel the warmth of the sun from time to time. I had solar panels fitted during the winter months and have my fingers crossed that as the days get longer and brighter they will start to earn their keep! March has been a busy but very enjoyable month for me. I have worked some long hours but made up for it by enjoying time with my family and friends. At the time of writing I have managed 3 Sundays in a row where I haven’t worked at all—something of a record for me! The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th April. ause for a Cuppa Hello from Cause for a Cuppa and I hope that whenever you are reading this, that today had have had the opportunity to laugh and enjoy your family. Speaking of which, while driving my lad (Chad) to an interview at Sheffield Hallam University, we got to talking about teachers, etc.
Chad: “My mate told me about his interview and how the tutors were so old.” Me: “Oh, right … what do you think is ‘so old’?” Chad: “Mid-50’s … something like that” Me: “Say what?!” Chad: “Why, how old are you?” Me: “50 next month!” Chad: “Ah ... I guess I take that back then” I wish all family dealings could be as light hearted as that. Sadly, a family in Rossington had to experience the sudden loss of a child on Valentine’s Day. The tragedy surrounding Casey Kearney and the grief of her family/friends/schoolmates swept into the hearts Rossington and the nation. You may have seen my little bit on Look North or heard me on BBC Sheffield. I also spoke to a couple of schools to try and offer a degree of comfort and sense to it all. There is none. I do hope that any feeble attempts could have done something positive to help someone. It was one of the most difficult things I have done. The funeral offered an opportunity to grieve over the loss of a lovely 13 year old. Unfortunately Casey’s family may experience difficulty and pain for weeks/months/years to come. Care for the Family offers some perspective to help family/friends to try and cope (http:// www.careforthefamily.org.uk/pdf/supportnet/ EFI-TheLossofaChild.pdf). To finish, I thought I would bring out a few bits that will help if you know Casey/family or if you lost a child yourself. Grieving is good/normal (for men too). Everyone deals with it differently. The family will have to find a new “normal”. Allow them to talk. A listening ear is powerful. Don’t say “I understand” unless you have been in their shoes. Don’t avoid talking about the child. On a final note, we will have our Easter Service on 4 April @ 10.30 at the Holmescarr Centre. We will also host our annual Egg Hunt immediately after the service. (To be fair, only those attending the service will be invited to participate in the egg hunt.) As always, if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cuppa, the door is always open. Rossington Community Library
The new Community Library officially opened for business on Monday 20 th February. Situated in the Holmescarr Centre and staffed by volunteers, the library seeks to provide the full range of library services. The number of books on display is currently limited but this will increase as more space is made available but the library has been set up to offer the opportunity to order from the vast range of DVD’s and books currently available at all the other libraries within the Borough. Many books are also available in large print and spoken word formats. There are also books for children and there will also be a number of PC’s for the exclusive use of library members. The library is staffed by volunteers between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday but there is a self service unit where users can return or renew books at other times when the centre is open and for those that don’t yet know, the Holmescarr Centre is conveniently located just along the road from Asda with a 55 bus stop nearby. It will however become a challenge to maintain these opening hours if there are not enough people willing to give up their time to help. To cover each of the ten half day sessions a week with two staff there needs to be a pool of more than twenty volunteers; more if opening hours are to be extended to cover the period after school or Saturday mornings. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer call Cynthia Edwards on 865658 or email at rossingtonlibrary@hotmail.co.uk The group is also looking for somebody to take on the voluntary role of treasurer. No previous experience required, however duties will include financial administration; Keeping up -to-date records, maintaining an audit trail for all transactions and ensuring safe custody and prompt banking of money collected. If you are interested in this role please contact 865658. There is more to running the library than what many people may first imagine and it does involve being able to use the computer based system that links to the wider library network but potential volunteers should not be put off by this. Those comfortable with the technology can use it to deliver the full range of facilities on offer whilst others can limit themselves to the more straightforward tasks of the issue, return and renewal of books. Either way, training and ongoing support is available from DMBC library staff. In setting up the library credit must go to Janis Robinson and her team at the library service and Steve Thomas and his team at Holmescarr. A big thank you as well to all the current volunteers who have given their commitment and time so far. However reluctantly, people have had to accept that closing libraries is one of the ways that DMBC has chosen to meet its budget. Without volunteers willing to give up their time to run the library and without people making regular use of the facilities the library will close and, for a community the size of Rossington, that would be a sin.

Rossington Councillor's Update The Library at Holmescarr has opened and we now have about 25 volunteers to run it. It opened on the 20th February shut on the 21st to clear asbestos and re-opened on the 23rd thoroughly cleaned and cleared of any problem. Our library was the first of the libraries to be run by volunteers opened after the Mayor announced closure. It is in a temporary room until some structural work is carried out and will eventually (hopefully not too long) have two and a bit rooms, all interconnected. It will have a children’s section, a reference area, a The robot librarian reading area, a 12 station computer suite and the normal lending library. It is hoped that Newspapers and Magazines will return. We are looking for even more volunteers to help maximize its' opening hours. Please contact Sally on 865559 if you can help. The community allotment at the side of the Children’s Centre will be opening in the spring and a couple of schools will be using it. The Sensory Garden, after a few hiccups, is on track to also be completed in Spring. This will be open to all the village and I hope that it will be enjoyed by all . The Children’s play park next to the Welfare has been a bit of a disappointment to me since it was opened last year. I thought that it looked better on paper than in reality. So DMBC is putting an extra couple of Sensory Garden Area pieces of apparatus in and extending the current BMX/Skateboard area. This should be completed by the end of April. There will be new equipment at the play area at the back of the British Legion replacing the current goalpost with new posts and a basketball net also. There will be a linear toddlers play area off Parklands and there will be benches situated around the village. The Welfare fencing will be replace to ensure security for the events that are to take place there in the next three years and all this should be finished also by the end of April. There has been a blip on the crime front with break-ins at the Bankwood Allotments taking place with a large amount stolen. The police think they know who did it, but need proof. But all-in-all Rossington is a safe place to live with some of the lowest crime figures in the Borough. The police, working with the DMBC Neighbourhood staff are working to improve and already good situation

Rossington Main Football Club
As we prepare to enter the final full month of the current football season it becomes clear that we are likely to record one of the most successful campaigns at senior level for quite a number of years. Season 2011-2012 will hopefully end with both senior sides recording their highest points total and highest League placing for well over a decade, but more details later in this article. First, as promised, more information about the Non-League Ground Hop which takes place over the Easter weekend. This year the NCEL has secured and arranged this annual event where over 200 non-league football supporters attend a series of matches in a limited space of time. In previous years the location has been the SWestern League, the Northern League and even the Welsh League and it gives football enthusiasts who may be dis-illusioned with the professional game the opportunity to visit new locations and new grounds and mix with fellow-minded people. There are NINE matches scheduled for the Yorkshire area in just over 2 days and kick-off times are staggered so that supporters may be "bussed" between venues (there is also hotel accommodation tied in with the package) The NCEL programme starts on Thursday April 5th with an evening game in Leeds at Yorkshire Amateur's ground. Next day they stay in West Yorks. with matches at Eccleshill (10-45k.o.) Thackley (1-45k.o.) Liversedge (4-45k.o.) and finishing at Brighouse (7-45k.o.) The Easter Saturday schedule moves to the South Yorkshire area and does affect us. Matches on April 7th start with a 1030a.m. kick-off at Maltby where Parkgate are the visitors. The entourage then moves on to Staveley (1-30p.m.) Hallam (4-45p.m.) and the tour culminates with our game at Worsbrough which kicks-off at 7-45p.m. Now I know there are far more important issues than watching non-league football on a Saturday evening (and with it being Easter Saturday as well) but if there are followers of the non-league game out there, a visit to one of these venues (not necessarily our game in Barnsley) will be interesting to say the least!!! The weekend does bring good (and much-needed) finance to participating Clubs - not only are attendances greatly increased but these enthusiasts are keen to sample food, purchase programmes and badges and other souvenirs to record their visit and the League and Clubs benefit from the publicity generated which could result in further visits from "ground-hoppers" in the future. These non-league enthusiasts, or ground-hoppers as they are often referred to, are a rare breed. To quote you 2 instances in particular in my experience involved in the game; a person travelling from London on public transport to watch an evening match at Rossington and more recently another gentleman on a day-off work travelling around non-league grounds in midweek to take photographs of the venues. Fortunately for him I was at the ground repairing the pitch when he arrived at Rossington at midday and so he could use his camera inside the ground, but he was then moving on to the Scunthorpe and Winterton area to view 3 20 | ROSSINGTON TODAY
more grounds before finishing the day by watching an evening game at Barton on Humber. He was a regular Chesterfield F.C. supporter but was upset not by their current form but by the increase in prices to watch football at that level, and had recently become interested in watching football at a lower level. And so to the run-in of our season. The game at Worsbrough already mentioned is the first of FIVE away matches in April and so we will be hard-pressed to maintain our 6th place in the League, however we should still amass our best points haul as we need just one more win to top the 50 points total for the season with 10 games remaining following our 2-2 draw with Albion Sports on March 3rd. February had been quite productive as, after two postponements due to the weather, we had back-to-back victories at home versus Grimsby Borough and Yorkshire Amat when we also kept 2 clean sheets. We were rocked somewhat by the departure of another of our young local players to Worksop, but have recently made four new signings to boost the squad for the remaining 2 months. The 2nd team remain in pole position in the Doncaster Senior League with just nine games remaining, four of which are at home including a possible title decider with Sutton Rovers who appear to be the biggest threat, currently lying 5 points behind but with a game in hand. Before that fixture which is likely to be scheduled for April, the 2nd team have tough away games at Bramley, Bawtry and Mexborough through March. Going into the final matches the Club also lies in 2nd spot in two differing statistics. Our 1st team remain in contention for the Fair Play award for our division in the NCEL with only 23 cautions all season. This is the least number of cautions for any club but unfortunately we have also received 2 red cards - albeit both for 2 yellows in a game and this has put us just behind Pontefract Colls who have more cautions but no sendings-off. 2nd team striker Scott Maughan is currently runner-up in the top goalscorer's charts for the Premier Division of the DSL with 16 goals from 14 appearances. He trails Bramley's striker T.Salt by 5 goals, although Scott has played 4 fewer games. Nathan Fraser lies in 4th spot with 12 goals from just 11 games but Nathan looks set to finish the season with the 1st team having been promoted to their squad as other players moved on. As stated earlier the 1st team are away throughout April and the dates for the final three 2nd team home games have yet to be confirmed. Only definite games at Oxford St. next month at present are TWO youth finals. On Wednesday 18th April we host the U.18 Schools Final (The Chris Meaden Memorial Trophy) with a 7p.m. kick-off. A week later it is the turn of the Doncaster Junior Boys Sunday League Final at U.16 level - kick-off time yet to be confirmed - and as both competitions are currently only at the semi-final stage I am unable to confirm who will be contesting the finals. ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – April News The club’s annual awards presentation evening was held on the evening of Friday 24 th February 2012 and was heralded as a major success by all who attended and also by the club administrators who organised the event. A total of 110 club members and their friends and family attended the function at Rossington Miners Welfare Hall which was the first occasion that the club had expanded to this larger and more ambitious format. The club would like to thank all who attended the evening that ran fairly smoothly for its first incarnation and all those who generously donated raffle prizes and helped with the organisation. Particular thanks go to club social secretary – Colin Taylor who performed the bulk of logistical work and handled the mic in the capacity as host for the evening. Rossington Parish Council News The last Parish Council meeting started off in an unusual way, one of the members of the public was spotted hiding a tape recorder under his coat. After some discussion and because we do all our business in public it was allowed as a one off. Subsequent reports made from this tape have been highlighted as questionable. I am sure if it happens again there will be a more in depth discussion on this. Other than the tape recorder two subjects were broached in the public section of the meeting, the European golf tour to which Malc Clark replied; and alternative uses of the colliery site. There was some disquiet regarding the lack of business units proposed on the old pit site. UK Coal were to hold a public consultation two weeks later and several members of the Parish Council attended and this showed that there were no industrial units at all, just shops and a garage. We’ll see how things develop and try to negotiate some improved plans. £4000 was formally granted to the library for rent on one room for one year. The decision to continue with this grant will be look at annually. A briefing was given on the FARRRS link road scheme showing that it was expected to open in early 2014. John Gibson and myself as DMBC councillor gave a report on the recent fire at Bankwood industrial estate. The Parish supports DMBC in their actions to prevent any misuse of this site. Steve Merriman, the clerk, gave a briefing on the new standard regime and the importance of good standards within the Parish Council. Unfortunately Councillor Allan Robson has resigned and a casual vacancy has been declared. It was noted that the Olympic torch would be going through Conisborough the town centre toward Hatfield, but not Rossington. Strange smells in the village were mentioned and on checking it was thought that these came from the mushroom farm at Misson. Volunteers were asked to come forward to organise the litter pick, but no one would do it, alternative solutions would have to be found. However the Jubilee tree planting had several volunteers and it is expected that this will take place in November, the right time for planting. The Strategy Committee chaired by Nuala Fennelly was the only other meeting last month. Rossington History Group asked for a £500 donation for producing a book titled ‘Rossington- A Community built on Coal 1912 to 2012’. They expect to publish in time for the 100 th anniversary on 12th June. The Qigong group asked for a grant of £56 to pay for insurance. The Holmescarr Ark and Crafts asked for a grant of £2400 to make safe the kiln room that is the core of their charitable work. This is used for the disabled, children and some of our older population and is considered very useful. All present voted in favour with the exception of Terry Wilde, who was in favour, but not for the full amount to be given. A report was given by Bill Reynolds about the burglaries at the allotments and it is hoped some action can be taken to prevent this in future. A discussion took place regarding allotment rents and it was decided that they remain the same for another year. However the payment date will change to reflect the growing season and decisions taken at previous meetings. Finally meetings have taken place regarding Rossington in Bloom and we should be seeing changes in the next couple of months. All agree that flowers will brighten up Rossington and improve the lives of all.

Help to Support Unemployed Holmescarr Ark and Crafts have successfully secured funding from the Humber Learning Consortium to provide unemployed adults with training and voluntary work experience in the Community Café. The Community Café is at the Holmescarr Centre in Rossington. As a volunteer in the Community Café you will be helping to grow and develop a facility that is used by local people and people that work within the community. You decide how many hours you want to work as a volunteer. We are currently seeking twenty five people to participate in the programme that have an interest in this type of work. The training will commence at the beginning of April. It is a 10 week programme for half a day each week. Childcare costs can be provided. You will also be provided with one-to-one life coaching sessions. Coaching sessions will build on what you have learned in the training and provide support to continue to grow your confidence into gaining future employment or further training. World Book Day The children and staff at Tornedale Infant School had a great day at school on 1st March when everyone (yes staff as well) came to school in their pyjamas and brought their favourite soft toy to school to listen to their favourite stories on World Book Day. We also held a Bake Sale - Parents and staff baked cakes to sell at the end of the day and £150 was raised towards some new reading books for the classrooms.

The Rossington Branch of The Royal British Legion meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the Welfare Club.We actively help and support all Ex-Service men and women veterans and their families, from all conflicts and service in general. We need your help to continue our efforts in giving practical help and support in and around Doncaster. You do not need to be Ex-Service to do this or join your local Royal British Legion Branch, all will be made welcome. We have, therefore, booked another one for Thursday 19th April, from 9:15 to 11:30am and everyone is welcome to come, have a coffee and a chat, do some of the jigsaw. play dominoes or just participate and (hopefully) enjoy. At this time of writing, we have lost our chair and treasurer due to their various commitments so we hope to get these positions filled as quickly as possible. Rossington Male Voice Choir
We are looking for additional members to enable us to expand the versatility of the choir. Enthusiasm and an enjoyment of singing are more important than vocal talent although the later would be very welcome! We practice every Wed evening, 7.30-9.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Queen’s Diamond Jubilee A celebratory long weekend of parties and pageantry will mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (60 years) between Saturday 2 and Tuesday 5 June 2012.
