“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”
‘but we have always done it this way’ can reap rewards.
In the month of his birthday I thought a Dr Seuss quote would be appropriate! World Book Day takes place on Friday 7th March – the date is linked to Dr Seuss’s birthday on 2nd March, and in the UK we use the closest Friday – I bet you didn’t know that!
The April issues will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th March. Also prior warning, that due to badly timed Easter holidays the deadline for the May issues will be very early – Friday 4th April.

Over recent weeks I have been lucky enough to participate in 2 very different personal development courses – but both of them looking at mind set. Why we still do certain things even though we know they aren’t in our best interests and learning how to overcome barriers that stand in our way of making changes. The quote above was mentioned at one of the courses and touched a nerve with many in the room – particularly those with children. “But everyone else has one Mum” – sound familiar? Our society seems to be all about fitting in, conforming to norms, when in reality we are all individuals, and sometimes thinking outside the box and stepping away from the accepted norms and not accepting julius_ad1_Julius_dental 17/01/2013 10:26 Page 1

Forgiveness Hello again and welcome to our monthly time together. Again, it is great to hear of people who have gained a bit from these little articles. Thanks for letting me know. You are always welcome to pop in, email, text, Facebook or whatever to let me know how you are doing. Once again, we are facing one of those days that were designed to bring joy and honour to a very special group of people … “mothers”. After doing a bit of research, it was interesting to find that the word for mother round the world sounds shockingly similar. The “m” is common to every language I checked and there is a theory that it comes from the natural “mmm” an infant makes when the vocal chords start to kick in.
(However, I personally prefer the “Da-Da-Da” sound. ;). The difficult part is that, in reality, it brings as much sadness, painful memories and even anger. Let’s be honest with ourselves … not all our “mothering” experiences are fairy tale “card shop” types experiences. I have yet to see a Mother’s Day card that says “Mum, why did you neglect me for all those years?” or “I am sorry to have neglected you all those years”. It is to that group I would like to speak to for just a moment. Regardless of what side of the painful mothering coin you may be on, forgiveness is the key element. Forgiveness is a huge subject and we won’t be able to cover it all here. Basically, forgiveness is the decision to release the offending person from your need/passion/desire for revenge. As a follower

of Christ, I can say that I can forgive another because God, through Christ has forgiven me (Ephesians 4:32). Being able to forgive someone does NOT mean the person must receive the forgiveness NOR does it make the offence right. However, it does release you from the shackles of bitterness that acts as a cancer. Forgiveness is much more about the one offended, rather than the offender. Don’t confuse forgiveness with reconciliation. That is a whole other matter. If you are the offender, why not seek out the one whom you hurt? Be patient. Don’t expect them to throw their arms around you in acceptance (though it may happen). Life is too short to live in bitterness and unforgiveness. I know this month’s Cause may not have struck a chord with everyone. But if it has to you … why not take that first step to make this a Mother’s Day to remember.

Blameless Dear Friends, I was having a discussion with a friend the other day regarding the fact that our generation seems to complain about everything. Interestingly, we agreed that moaning does not make us ‘blameless’. The Apostle Paul challenges his readers in the book of Philippians to have a positive attitude (Philippians 2: 1-18). He uses the word ‘blameless’, which is the source of the word ‘sincere’. The literal meaning of ‘blameless’ is ‘without wax’. There is the story in Roman history of cowboy stone carvers and builders repairing damages and holes in stones with waxes that had the same colours as the stones. These waxes did not last long but the cowboy builders may have moved on. On the other hand, genuine craftsmen advertised their skills by putting the words ‘without wax’ on their signboards. In other words, they were sincere or honest.
Music Lover? Enjoy Dancing? Do you find yourselves at a loose end some weekends and wonder what you might do with your leisure time. Well, here in Harworth we have a solution. If you are a music lover or a dancing enthusiast, we have the perfect answer. The Harworth Organ Enthusiasts, based on Whitehouse Road in Bircotes, DN11 8EF, have been operating for the past 40 years, using a real Cinema Pipe Organ (similar to Blackpool Tower) and it still amazes us to know how many people don’t know about us. Our dances and Concerts are held on the 4th weekend of each month from September to June, engaging 8
ROSSINGTON TODAY
Lent is the season when most of us try to be ‘without wax’ with ourselves and in our relationships. God also wants us to be sincere in all that we say and do, not only in lent. He expects us to be good examples of honesty and effort in a world that is full of shams. It may be difficult in being blameless but he gives us the opportunity to ask him to help us in our lives. It’s okay to ask from him since he knows that we are fallible beings. I wonder if I can challenge you to consider being consistent in your dependence on God as you pray frequently and read his word during this season of lent. You may consider asking friends, neighbours or the church to assist you. Remember that when it comes to issues of being honest, you are not alone. Being honest with yourself will also encourage others to be honest with you. My prayer is that each of us will strive to be people ‘without wax’ as we celebrate lent this month.

Rossington Parish Council 5th February 2014. Doncaster Council Draft Revenue Budget 2014/15 Please note this is a draft revenue budget for 3 years.
Doncaster Council has delivered £93m of savings in the 3 years from 2011-2014. The Council now has to deliver a further £109m in savings between April 2014 and March 2017. Overall, from 2011 - 2017 the Council budget will have shrunk by 58%. By 2017 Doncaster will have a very different council and the difference will be felt by those who rely on services and by the frontline staff who deliver them. SIGOMA (the Special Interest Group of Municipal Councils) says Doncaster will have lost £665 per person by 2017 compared to £305 per person in the South East. These are huge cuts in funding by anyone’s standards and will have a devastating effect on service delivery. Readers of this note can draw their own conclusions as to the fairness and justness of the cuts inflicted on Doncaster. In general, some 3/5ths of the council budget is ring-fenced for services which are, by and large, a statutory requirement. This means the brunt of the cuts will impact on the remaining 2/5ths. As Ward members we have received initial concerns on a number of key areas but expect to receive many more. These initial enquiries focus on the following areas; Council Tax- The proposed 1.95% increase in Council Tax will provide 20
ROSSINGTON TODAY
additional monies for the forecast growth in demand for Children’s Services and Adult Services. Library Service –The Draft Council budget identifies 8 libraries that could, potentially, become community run libraries in addition to the 12 already in place across the Borough. Rossington is one of the 12 currently (well run) community Libraries. However, the Council remains committed to ensuring there is still a wellstocked and well-resourced library in Rossington (it is NOT closing) with, book reservation service, free internet and computer access, information services and children’s library services. More volunteers need to come forward so that we can increase opening hours, outreach and other creative provision. Youth Services and Children’s Centres- The budget states the Council intends to rationalise and reduce the number of Children’s Centres and Youth Centres. A number of Children’s Centres will close and it is yet to be decided which centres may close. There has been no indication that the much used Children’s Centre in Rossington is marked for closure. This centre is well used and currently supplies their services to Finningley Ward as well as Rossington. There is also a proposal to reduce

the number of Youth Centres by around 50% (there are currently 17 centres). The Youth Service is not a statutory service however, Rossington Parish Council recognises that the work the Youth Club does with Young people is valuable and will invest money to save it. The land on which Rossington Youth Club is built is leased long term form the Rossington Miners Welfare. DMBC do not own the land, but owns the building. In the DMBC asset review the Youth Club is potentially available for disposal. Leisure Centre - Some Leisure Centres will restrict access to services by focusing on schools and swimming clubs. However, there is now a three year strategy being proposed that will that will see 5 of the centres utilised by all. Rossington Leisure Centre is one of the 3 centres earmarked to be open just to schools and the swimming club. Rossington Parish Council intend to ensure that there is public swimming available to all and has plans in place. We have talked to the leisure trusts senior management and have, hopefully, come to a deal that will see the pool open to all each weekday and open on a Saturday. Household Waste Recycling Centre (Dump it Sites) - It is proposed that the majority of these centres will close 2 days per week. Rossington will be one of those, the chosen

refurbishment with running costs much higher than other, privately run, homes in Doncaster (ÂŁ700 p/w against ÂŁ450 p/w).
provided for final recommendations and the detail of any recommendations which will be a challenge to implement.
Adult Services - Doncaster currently provides a range of support and services to people who need car and support following assessment. This is done against the national framework Fair Access to Care Services (FACS). There are 4 levels for help in accessing services. These are Low, Moderate, Substantial and Critical. Until quite recently, Doncaster provided services to those assessed in all 4 categories. Currently, it has been agreed that those assessed as Low will not receive services but will be advice and signposted to other services/ agencies who may be able to help.
The Budget recognises that the significant costs of these improvements and the scale and impact of the funding cuts described above means financing this work will be extremely difficult. The draft budget proposes a phased closure programme for council run care homes over a period of years.
Further to our comments about the letter issued by Adult Social Care on January 17th, we are calling for a meeting to be held as soon as possible in order for those affected to be able to hear what options have been considered and for details of how the council plans to move to more modern service that protects the wellbeing of all care home residents and their families over the long term.
Throughout England there has been ongoing work to consider the effects of moving the threshold from Moderate to Substantial whilst increasing information, advice and signposting to other services to help people remain independent.
The budget states; in order to ensure modern care homes are available, the Council will work in partnership with others to develop a more streamlined, modern, efficient service through new facilities designed to offer the best care for older people. To ensure this the Council will set clear expectations of a high quality service through regular reviews and close monitoring of contracts. The proposed changes to the Care Quality Commission standards for registration and inspection will support this approach.
Meanwhile, it is widely expected that the Draft Care and Support Bill will introduce a new national minimum threshold to eligibility in April 2015 at a similar level to the current Substantial level. The Council expects to introduce the new National Minimum Threshold in April 2015. Care Homes-The Council also provides residential care at 7 care homes, including Gattison House, Rossington. In Doncaster, there are currently 2,300 bed spaces available with the Council providing 230 (10%). The need to improve and modernise the service has been recognised for some years with most being over 50 years old and the youngest over 25 years old. The budget recognises that Council care homes are well run but, in many cases, the homes require considerable and costly
It is disappointing that the letter issued by Adult Social Care on the 17th of January to those affected did not clearly explain the consultation process, or the long term objectives for Care Home provision in future.
The process of achieving this must ensure the wellbeing of residents and their families is an absolute priority and care and attention will be taken to reduce stress and upset to any of our residents and their families. We are informed the consultation process will not be completed until April with feedback going to Cabinet in the summer. We have been assured that officers will be in direct contact with the families of residents and will be visiting homes as part of the consultation. We will be looking very closely at the evidence and justification

As stated earlier, Doncaster Council will be very different by 2017 and that difference will be felt by all who rely on council services and the front-line staff who deliver them. We are very much aware that this does not make comfortable reading and will keep the Parish Council and others informed of further details as they become available. We have expressed an interest in taking over the running and the freehold of a number of DMBC owned buildings; The Youth Club, Brodsworth Way Pavilion and fields, Radburn Community Centre, the Ragusa Centre & Skipwith Gardens Community Centre and also Bankwood Allotments. These would be held as a charitable trust to take advantage of any tax relief and the reduction in Business Rates available to such trusts. This would take the revenue burden from DMBC, keep them open, maximise their potential and be an asset to the Parish Council.

No-one Likes a Soggy Bottom!
It’s a phrase normally associated with BBC2’s Great British Bake Off, but it’s not just cooks who go to great lengths to ensure their produce (pastry in this case) doesn’t end up with a soggy bottom, it affects gardeners too! I’m not talking about sitting on wet grass, or toppling over in the veg plot after too much potting-shed homebrew, but about the poor plants we expect to grow in badlydrained soil. Out in the wild, a plant’s survival depends on whether its seeds blow into a dry rock face or a sticky clay soil puddle, and that’s fine because one will die while the other thrives. But it’s very different in the domestic garden, where overenthusiastic humans buy anything that looks pretty, dig a hole and expect it to bloom. The right plant for the right soil is as important, if not more so than its tolerance to sun or shade. Studies show that plants cannot survive for more than just a few days if left in standing water. It’s a little known fact that roots need air too … well, most plants that is. You see there’s a clever lot who have adapted over the years to thrive in such conditions and they’re commonly known as bog plants. I understand it’s not the most glamorous name, unlike 24
ROSSINGTON TODAY
their closely-related cousins such as water lilies, which are known as hydrophytes. Plants that thrive in heavy, wet clay soils, which are damp but not permanently waterlogged, include the beautiful bold leaves of the Hosta, the feathery plumes and delectably dissected foliage of the Astilbe, and any of the Primulas, which are ideal for low-growing spring colour. For fern lovers, Osmunda regalis is a favourite or for a splash of summer colour in full sun try Lobelia cardinalis. If you have a larger garden and need to fill areas of damp soil, try the herbaceous Rodgersia which look great planted in drifts, and if you have a really large area why not try the prickly rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata: children will love standing under the giant leaves of its huge green umbrella! If you don’t have a boggy area, but would like to try growing some of these plants for yourself, why not create one? If you dig out a ‘mini pond’ and then add an old liner or plastic sheet, pierce it several times with a fork and then add the soil back in, you can plant a selection of the plants above. You’ll need to make sure it doesn’t dry out in the
summer, so a shady location usually works best, and if you’ve only got a teeny garden, try the fly-eating pitcher plants Sarracenia. They will provide a talking point. Until next month, enjoy your garden
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club The beginning of the racing season is almost upon us with the first official event and JE James League curtain raiser set for 1st March on the popular (and hopefully traffic light free) A614 between Blaxton and Crowle. The newly formed Rossington Wheelers Racing Section have been putting in the hard winter miles ready to lock horns with Sugar Cane Velo Club, Sheffrec CC and Bolsover District CC in the CTT North Mids sanctioned events. Hopes are high that both individual and team finishing positions of 2013 can be bettered in what is set to be a quality competition for the duration of summer. This will of course be supplemented by the clubs own AAD Gas Handicap League on Wednesday nights.
On other fronts the club is embarking on another epic ride in support of charity and is resurrecting 2011’s coast to coast efforts with a single day jaunt from Blackpool to Scarborough in mid May. Eighteen
riders have signed up for the 150ish mile trek, with reserves also in place. This is quite a project to plan logistically and so thanks go out in advance to those doing the spade work. Opportunities to sponsor and support the ride will be detailed in due course.
The next months club runs see a gradual increase in mileage into the springtime and the range of available destinations is consequently increased, 65 miles the rough mean mileage to places such as Crofton to the NW and Ollerton to the S, culminating on Sunday 6/4/14 with homage to the Belgian Classic on that day The Tour of Flanders with the ‘Ronde Van Rosso’ when the villages two clubs, Wheelers and Sugar Cane plus notable guests tackle our very own bergs cobbled climbs around Ulley, Laughton and various spots inbetween. There is also a Sunday morning ride that retains the established 40-50 mileage to act as a stepping stone
into the longer rides. On the back of the Doncaster Cyclefest that will be well promoted in coming months there is a planned programme of inter-club beginners rides, Active Doncaster have set up a website dedicated to this summers events that is worth a look, as usual all club activities are available via our website, facebook page, twitter account or failing those contact chairman Les Hudson at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue.
