Welcome to

the AUGUST 2014 edition

I am Summer, come to lure you away from your computer... come dance on my fresh grass, dig your toes into my beaches. - Oriana Green As I write this the school term is close to an end and thankfully summer seems to be with us. While these magazines are being printed I will be heading off with a large group of friends for a weekend in the Peak District, staying in a Youth Hostel. Several outdoor pursuits are planned including a bit of walking, sightseeing and swimming in an outdoor pool as well as sometime just enjoying the summer so fingers crossed for lots of sunshine. Last month I mentioned how busy the end of term would be for me, with the many extra demands on my time as well as getting these magazines to print. A local business sensing that it could also be a stressful time for me, kindly invited me into their salon for a reflexology session. Julie at Scandalo in Tickhill, turned out to be an accomplished reflexologist, and I enjoyed a relaxing hour, which was not only a stress reliever but also gave me an insight into aspects of my health to be mindful of. Thank you very much to Julie and the team at Scandalo, I can thoroughly recommend booking in for your own reflexology experience. The September issues will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 1st August. No, this isn’t a misprint – it really is the earliest deadline ever! Much the same as the last couple of summers I would like to take a couple of weeks off during August, while my children are enjoying their school holidays, so the closing date has been set very early so that I can get the magazines to print and then enjoy some relaxation time. Apologies if this does cause you any inconvenience normal midmonth closing dates will be resumed in September!

Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Time is a gift... When it’s gone, it’s gone. Can you believe it? Summer is here! Welcome back to Cause for a Cuppa. Isn’t is shocking how that time just seems to move? We can buy creams, gels, dyes and lotions which can hold back what time can do to us … but the clock just seems to keep ticking. Last month, I had the opportunity to see someone, beautiful in her prom dress, gather at the designated spot with her school mates. It just seems yesterday I met her for the first time. But in reality it was 6 years ago. Our daughter will soon be married 3 years and our oldest son will soon finish his degree … doing a year of work experience this year. I remembered seeing how Paula

(Rossington Today) mentioned that she is turning a corner of not doing the school run any more. Where does it go? Time is one of those funny things. Sometimes I find myself just “trying to make it to the next hurdle” and wishing time away. But once that hour or week is gone … it is gone. We get one shot at fetching our children up. We get one shot at helping our parents through their final years. It has been just a few weeks since the father of a dear couple passed away. A death is always hard but I can honestly say that I truly respect and honour that daughter and son-in-law for the years her Dad stopped with them before they couldn’t physically care for him anymore. Then there was the constant attention at the care home. Why am I saying all that? Isn’t summer meant to be bright, sunny and fun? Well … yes. I am trying to say what

I tend to say at this time of the year. Do your best to make a memory this summer. Try something new. Don’t count down the days until school starts back up. Be available for your children/ grandchildren. I realise life does carry on and the laundry needs doing and pots need washing. But the summer when “Calum/Sophie” is 4 years old is here now. He/she get the biggest grin when you push them on the swing. It won’t be the same next summer. It doesn’t have to cost much to make a memory. Why not get some bits (recycled stuff is even better!) together and make a craft? Have a water battle. Lay out and watch the stars appear. It’s the simple things we tend to remember. Think now about what you would write … “what I did on my summer holidays 2014”. As always, the door is open and the kettle is on. Have a great one!

ERIC SIMPSON, PASTOR

Messy Church is on holiday! Thank you so much for a great Messy Year. We will be back in September in a bigger, better venue at the Holmescarr Centre. Watch this space!

Rossington Councillor’s Update Well, wonders never cease, they actually have started work on Queen Mary’s Road and when they said they would which is also quite a surprise. Well done DMBC and the Highways department. I can’t wait for it to be completed after 3 years of fighting to get something done. All we have to do is complain about all the other roads that need repair in Rossington. The Boundary Commission’s proposal to change the Ward boundaries in Doncaster have been looked at and there will be some tweaking round the edges to make the areas more even and may even add Austerfield to Rossington and Bawtry. The Link road, FARRRS, progress is good and as announced in last month’s Rossington Today, it looks like it will be finished significantly early. The Inland Port or iPort as they now say looks like it will not start until the road is not for off completion, so that they can open at the same time. It is very frustrating waiting. The iPort will bring 5 or 6,000 jobs when finished and we need those jobs. We Councillors had a compulsory training course on Health and Safety, presented by the Council’s own staff and not the usual consultant or outside trainer, and I actually enjoyed it! It gave a very good overview of what we need to do to protect our employees and the public. Well done DMBC staff again!

dull, a punishment. It can only get better. We are still waiting for the money for refurbishing the market to be signed off! Hilary McNamee and myself have been nagging and nagging, but to no avail! The paperwork has been sat on a desk just needing a signature. It is almost a three month delay. It is absolutely good value for money and I have been thinking conspiracy theories as to why the thing has not been signed off. Perhaps I am just a bit paranoid. The Council Area team had to do some emergency repairs to make the stalls safe or the market would have to be closed and we don’t want that. I have had a number of enquiries regarding the Police and their policing. So, I have discussed at great length the policing situation in Rossington with Ray Mountford, the Rossington Inspector, and he has shown me the systems used by the police to police Rossington and he satisfied me that all was as it should. We have had a spike in crime, unfortunately several criminals are out at the same time. The Police know who they are and action will be taken to stop this. We still have the lowest crime and ASB in Doncaster and we want it to stay that way.

Kindest Regards

Richard Cooper-Holmes

Your Labour Councillor

Give Blood this Summer There will be a blood donation clinic held in Rossington during August. At Rossington Miners Welfare, West End Lane on Tuesday 19th August. Sessions will be 12.45-3.30pm and 4.30-7.15pm

Friends of Brodsworth Way The FoBW has now officially been dissolved and, after 5 years, once again I would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who ever attended meetings, was involved in the Christmas Fair and attended the coffee mornings. As reported in the previous issue, Doncaster MBC have agreed to use our funds to place a bench seat near to the football field so, hopefully, any passers-by can rest awhile. Our coffee mornings will continue at the Holmescarr Centre, Grange Lane, the first Thursday of each month at 10am. We hope to see our normal attendees and new ones are most welcome. The group may be be resurrected at some point by Brian Cox, who is currently in discussions with DMBC, as he, along with a local resident, Lorraine, have ideas to continue trying to bring the community together. Fresh ideas to kick start the group may just be what is needed. Obviously, we wish them luck.

DONCASTER MOVIE MAKERS Doncaster Movie Makers is a group of amateur filmmakers who enjoy creating a wide variety of productions including documentary, drama, comedy and experimental films. We have a full programme of events including teaching evenings, lectures, film nights and competitions. We also make films which involve several club members and have made promotional films for other organisations. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and there are ample opportunities for learning and sharing your film making skills. So if you like taking film clips on your phone, ipad or camcorder, but don’t really know how to go about making them more viewable and interesting, come and see what we do. If you like filming family occasions, editing, titling and the addition of music can enhance them. You will also get the opportunity to see the results of your work on our club’s big screen. We meet every Wednesday at 7.30 pm from September until the end of April at Flintwood Methodist Church, Lansdowne Road, Intake, Doncaster, DN2 6QN. Our opening evening is 24th September, so why not come and join us, whatever your ability and take the first steps to making your own movies. Restart of Tricon's ability to serve Rossington Tricon was born in 1986 and served Rossington for many years until hard times forced it to an almost complete shutdown in 2010. The Tandoori Restaurant in Copley Road, Doncaster, organised a Charity evening dinner on Wednesday the 16th July to help Tricon to restart, operating from the Holmescarr Community Centre in Grange Lane. The proceeds will be shared with the Holmescarr Ark & Crafts Team and The Friends of Brodsworth Way. At the time of this magazine going to print the amount raised was unknown however we look forward to bringing you more news of Tricon next month. T

community This year is flying by and so much is happening here at the Sanctuary. Our annual dog show took place on 6th July and what a terrific day it was. The weather was so kind to us and the sun shone all day. Everyone had so much fun showing off their beloved pets. Having picnics and enjoying the BBQ . A very big thank you to people that manned stalls and baked cakes. Also everyone that came along to join in the fun. It was a brilliant fund raising day and it was so moving to see lots of dogs that we had re homed looking happy and healthy, it makes all our hard work worthwhile . Also a big thanks to some new volunteers particularly Heather who has had Tom bola stalls at a couple of gala’s in Doncaster and Maureen who has helped on street collections. Thank you also for people that take the time to turn up regularly come rain or shine we couldn’t carry on with fund raising without you. I’m not sure if everyone is aware we also have a charity shop on Retford Road, Manton, Worksop which is open for most of the week now thanks to new volunteers. It’s a lovely little shop selling well priced ornaments, jewellery, gifts and much more - it’s a little Aladdin’s cave. If you’re looking for something different why not pop down and take a look.

Getting onto the Sanctuary now, our new building work is coming along wonderfully and we are all getting excited about our new reception after having such a small space to work in previously this looks like the prince of facilities. We will soon be planning where to

Finding a forever home arrange desks and furniture not to mention the odd resident dog or two so we are all getting rather giddy. We must apologise for the inconvenience our building work has created it seems as though we have been living on a building site for ever. However when you are a charity you have to earn the money before you can spend it, and it takes time, but we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, thank goodness. We have lots of lovely dogs and cats here that all need loving homes and a second chance, so please if you are looking for that special pet to share your life please come along to speak to us we will give you all the help you need. Whether you are interested in fostering one of our older dogs or just want a chat about which dog or cat would be suitable we are here to help. Everyone have a great summer but please don’t leave your most treasured best friend in a hot car or without water on sunny days. Please call us on 01302 711330 and leave a message someone will call you back or 07969 203206. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

Come along and s oday. see uT

Sally Female May 2013 6 Year No No Older

My owner died and left me all alone. There was nobody in the family who could take me in and no neighbours to care for me. I felt so unloved. Its no wonder that Im a little grumpy at times !!! Sally loves people but certainly not other cats or dogs. That way she gets all the fuss! She desperately wants to be friends but reads the signals wrong sometimes!! A home where she will be allowed the freedom to chose when she wants fusses would suit her best as she is not a lapcat.

Frank Male May 2014 6 Months Possibly Yes Yes

Frank was rehomed with his sister, Stevie, as a kitten and has been very happy there. Unfortunately their landlord has changed his policy with regard to pets so they have sadly had to return to Mayflower. Frank is the more confident of the pair and is always the one looking for fun (or trouble!!) He is also very affectionate and purrs like a tractor when he finally stops for a cuddle Frank and Stevie are very close and must be rehomed together. Have you room in your hearts and home for this adorable pair?

Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club – August News It’s time for a bit of a catch up on the local cycling news after a two month sabbatical caused by space issues and ill-timed holidays by the writer. At the time of writing this month the spectacular that was the 2014 Tour de France ‘Grand Depart’ had left the UK and was back in mainland France after a phenomenal performance by both the Yorkshire organising committee and the Yorkshire public alike, on the back of which an annual 3 day ‘Tour of Yorkshire’ seems a certainty from 2015. With figures of 2 million spectators a day estimated at roadside there can’t have been many people left at home? The highlight of the clubs early summer campaign was the completion of the 2nd Coast 2 Coast charity challenge in aid of Weston Park Hospital’s Cancer Unit. 13 club riders completed the near 150 mile ride from Blackpool to Scarborough in a brisk time of 10 hours riding time! The total raised to date amounting to £2,700, which takes the clubs total amount raised for charity in the last 4 years within touching distance of the £10k mark, a fantastic effort all round. The ride itself was a great experience for the riders and thanks must go to Tony Hickey and the support team of volunteers for their assistance! The clubs AAD Gas Handicap TT League has reached its halfway point at round 10 and is again a tight competition with 8 points only separating the top 4:

Brian Pollock

47 points

Kev Cooke

42 points – leading veteran

John Keen

40 points

Stephen Paterson

39 points – leading junior

Gillian Challoner

25 points – leading lady

Stephen Paterson has underlined his growing potential with a string of good showings in local road and circuit races culminating in a maiden win in the North Mids Road Race League at Stainton in late June. As confidence grows there’s sure to be more wins to follow. Stephen is also a high scorer in the JE James TT League, the club are currently sitting 6th in the team competition but without any riders with a maximum of 6 scoring rides, 4th place is within reach with a full quota of scores. At the top of the table are Rossington’s Sugarcane Velo with stalwart Michael Brammall 3rd in the individual competition. Further afield, and back to France in fact where Rossington professional Graham Briggs captured a stage and the overall win at the UCI ranked Tour de Loir et Cher, this and a further 5 domestic wins have propelled Graham to 3rd in the national rankings and a win and various podium placings helped his Rapha-CondorJLT team win the prestigious Tour Series prize covered by ITV. Fellow Doncaster professional Tom Stewart also captured 2 individual wins in this competition. There are plenty more cycling activities planned by ourselves, other cycling clubs and also the local councils etc throughout the summer so keep your eyes peeled if these interest you and we’ll wrap up more of these next month. Follow us on Facebook and www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or call in and see Les at Hudson Cycles for more details. Safe riding

DRIVE AWAY THE PAIN! Nearly 2/3 of workers commute by car which over an average week can add up to a significant number of hours, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal problems like back and neck pain. Workplace assessments are now more common with an increased awareness of work station ergonomics. However, the correct set up in a car can also have huge health benefits in terms of improving posture and minimising risks of aches and pains.

Organised by Run England leaders, course includes regular group talks & gait analysis

Both people and cars come in all different shapes and sizes so it will take a little time to achieve a ‘best fit’. Work through the following checks to optimise your position in your car… Raise the seat as high as is comfortable to ensure maximum vision of the road.

following the course you can run with us 3 times per week for FREE!

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Move the seat forwards until you can fully depress the pedals whilst maintaining slightly flexed knees. Have the angle of the back rest at about 20 degrees from vertical – you should have contact with the seat up to shoulder height whilst being able to hold the steering wheel with slightly flexed elbows. Check the lumbar support ‘fits’ your spinal shape.

Mobile Foot Health Prac oner Lynne Betreen

The head rest should be at a height just above eye level sitting about 2-3cm from the back of the head (this minimises the risk of injury in the event of a collision) Your hands should be positioned at ‘10 and 2’ with both hands in place for spinal and muscular balance. Remember our bodies are designed to move - you should aim to break for a stretch and a stroll every 2 hours.

All your foot health needs in the comfort of your own home. Nail trimming, corns, callouses, ingrowing toenails etc.

Rossington Parish Council After an intense and serious debate the Parish Council has firmed up its policy of the closure of the rail crossing on the east coast mainline and the motion put forward by Cllr Hilary McNamee was passed with only one abstention and all others in favour:

The Motion: Rossington Parish Council supports in principal the construction of a road bridge over the railway crossing on Station Road. The Parish Council believes that the completed development should: 1. Lead to an attractive overall development. 2. Result in minimal impact on the retained properties. 3. If necessary, give consideration to the removal of additional houses to create the best possible outcome. 4. The design should minimise the number of properties compulsory purchased. 5. Due consideration should be given to those losing their property and help, care and kindness should be given to the people who live in those properties. 6. The design should take the minimum land necessary from the school fields in order to create a satisfactory layout. 32

ROSSINGTON TODAY

To show that these objectives have been satisfied, the Parish Council expects the developer to provide full pictorial illustrations of the completed proposals. Last month I said that there was almost no communication from Network Rail and the leaflets still haven’t arrived 3 weeks after the event. Less than 5% of the village received notices and I suppose that the delivery people just dumped the rest in a bin and pocketed the money! Network Rail have sacked the delivery company who had a national contract with them. There were complaints by some Parish Councillors that the Police never came to the Parish Council meetings as they should, but they did turn up 11 months ago in August when we don’t have a meeting and then again in September. I have spoken to the Inspector for Rossington, Ray Mountford, and he has said that he has promised that he will get someone at the meetings when the shift pattern allows. The Strategy Committee made the first of its’ four inspections of the allotments and found them to be in very good condition with only two needing some work. These are held by tenants who have a serious long-term illness, so, we are trying to get some volunteers to go in and tidy their allotments. The industry and business consultation document for the Neighbourhood Plan is ready and that will take place within the next few weeks. When we get them back we shall use that and the previous consultations to formulate more questions for a village-wide consultation and then we should be ready to write it and to consult on the final document before sending it to be independently assessed and voted on in a referendum of all the Parish.

Richard Cooper-Holmes Chairman, Rossington Parish Council

Garden View

Native but Nice! With a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed ‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives! Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the triking red poppies which adorn the fields midway through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers. 36

ROSSINGTON TODAY

The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested. The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs.

Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants they’re born survivors!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

New PRO for Tickhill & District Lions This is my first venture as the new PRO or Public Relations Officer for your local Tickhill and District Lions and I wanted to discuss communication as it seemed an important place to start! I've been having a good long think on this and started by wanting to 'push' the social media side and webpage of our Lions club being one of the younger members, to modernise our approach and so I shall. But then I thought a little harder and realised I was missing something, my Mum brought it to my attention when I told her what I was doing and it really hit home when she quite firmly explained that " I don't do that internet thing! I don't know how to Facebook , I don't even have a mobile phone and I prefer to write a letter thank you!" That reminded me that there will be a good number of the readership of this magazine in exactly that position. So with that in mind I would like to remind you the reader that we are here as a group of around 40 likeminded volunteers, raising money and giving our time to help good causes within our community and around the world and that you can see what we are about in a number of ways, modern and more traditional. We have a webpage 'tickhill-lions.com' which contains a great deal of information on what we do and how we can help. You can look us up on Facebook, just search Tickhill and District Lions and 'Like' our page, that way we can keep you up to date with what we are doing in your area and elsewhere. You can read our feature each month in this magazine and I will endeavour to keep you up to date with our exploits, activities and efforts to help. 44

You can contact is in a number of ways too: email us at contact@tickhilllions.com , by telephone on 08449 632462 or you can write to us at Tickhill & District Lions, 1 Heather Close, Tickhill, Doncaster DN11 9UU. So something for everyone I hope. You will see us supporting local events and raising money where we can so take the time to ask us what we do, you may be more than a little surprised by just how much work and support is put into the local area. I look forward to getting to know you all just a little better over the next year.
