Welcome to

the JULY 2014 edition

“Teachers plant the seeds of knowledge that grow forever.”- Author Unknown Another school year is coming to end, exam periods are over (great relief in our household) and many children enter a period of end of term concerts, awards evenings, sports days and other end of year activities. For our family, it brings the end of Primary School as my youngest moves on to join her brother and sister at Secondary School in September. I am sure that if previous years are anything to go by there will be tears shed in church on the last day of term by pupils and parents alike! What will I do in September, when after 12 years I have no more morning and afternoon school runs to do? No more Primary PTA and the end of my term as a Parent Governor will also have been reached. I am very sure I will still find my time filled – (before any of you rush forward with other suggestions!) The August issues will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th July. The busiest week of my month dealing with all the community content and advertising that pours in around this deadline coincides with the last week of term, together with many of the activities already described – please help me to ensure that I don’t miss out on these activities, and get your contributions in on time (early would be fantastic!) – thank you. Please be aware that the following month the closing date falls very early in August, so that I can take a period off work to spend time with my family during the holiday period.

Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Listen twice as much as you talk... Hello! Well, here we are again. Come on in. The kettle is on and we got some of your favourite biscuits from the cupboard. Someone stopped me the other day at Holmescarr and said she enjoyed reading these little bits. Thank you so much for that. It is encouraging. If these even help one family along the way then it is all worth it. I wanted to follow on a bit from last month ... that of listening. Someone said that God wants us to listen twice as much as talking because He gave us 2 ears but only one mouth. Today I want to chat just a little about something called active listening. Active listening is pretty much the opposite of the little comedy sketch that includes the wife trying to talk while the hubby is

sat there with his brew and newspaper pulled up like a book. Did you realise that just because we say something, the person we are talking to doesn’t always interpret it as intended. I realise people handle things different ways. But what are some potential arguments there because of this (mis) communication? “I’m going to town to get a few bits, back in a bit.” 1. You spent that much?! 2. What took so long? You knew I was meant to play footy with the lads! One of the things you can do to avoid those sorts of things is mirror what was said to make sure you got what the person truly meant. “Oh, so you are going to town and be back soon”. That was step 1. But then you need to clarify what you understood or maybe mis-understood.

July Messy Church 14 July (Monday) AND 17 July (Thursday) 3.30-5.30 pm Holmescarr Community Centre (Grange Lane nr. ASDA)

“Ok, you are going into town for a few bits? Any idea how much it may be because we have Sam’s school trip to sort this week as well. Also I am meeting the lads the Welfare at 4 for a bit of football.” That was step 2. Finally you can summarise what was said to be as clear as possible everyone is reading off the same hymn sheet. “Right, so it won’t be any more than £15 and you will be back by 3.30. That’s great. Will see you when you get back.” I realise that may sound like a pain. Sometimes it is. The goal is not to go silly OTT. But think of how many arguments could be avoided if we would practice a bit of active listening. Let me know how you get on with it. As always, the door is open and the kettle is on. It is always great hearing from you. School is nearly over and summer holidays are just round the corner. Enjoy and give the family a special hug!

Rossington Councillor’s Update We’ll start with an update on the Link Road. Significant progress has been made at Junction 3 of the M18 where the three mile stretch of road meets the motorway network and work is well underway to construct the six new bridges needed to make the link to Rossington and to the A638 Bawtry Road at Parrott’s Corner. These include two bridges spanning the East Coast and Brancliffe to Kirk Sandall (BKS) railway lines and four over the watercourses that currently make access to this part of Doncaster so difficult. Just last week, beams were lifted into place at the bridge which will carry a new link over the River Torne and connect FARRRS to Rossington at West End Lane. iPort, the 6 million sq. ft. development scheme in Rossington, is officially the largest outstanding commercial development with planning permission in the UK. For Doncaster and surrounding areas, the benefits of the scheme are copious, fuelling urban regeneration in the former mining area of Rossington as well as leading to job creation and growth in Doncaster. I’m sure that most of you have seen Yorkshire Water working on Queen Mary’s Road well by the time you get this work should have started renewing the road surface! That is if they keep their word, I’ve even had it in writing and June 29th is the start date. The current traffic calming measures will be taken out and replaced with five similar to those on Central Drive. Grantham Street corner will be sorted out and the layout of the road will be tidied up.

proposal for changes to the Ward boundaries in Doncaster and are now consulting on their proposals. They have mostly taken up the Labour Party’s suggestions, but made some small changes. The suggestion is that Bawtry joins us as Rossington and Bawtry Ward, with three Councillors. Please find the link below to the Boundary Commission review and have your say: http://www.lgbce.org.uk/current-reviews/ yorkshire-and-the-humber/south-yorkshire/ doncaster-fer We had the Annual Meeting of the Council and elected Pat Haith, Councillor for Hatfield, as Civic Mayor, I’m sure she will do well. Later at an extraordinary meeting we approved the mechanism for having an Enterprise Zone at the Airport, so that will mean more jobs. We also received a petition initially of 13,000 signatures, now up to 24,000 signatures against the closure of the Council run care homes. The decision is not one for the Council, but for the Cabinet. The recommendation to the Cabinet was that they should take into account all facts and the results of the consultation and the petition. The decision is being taken at the Cabinet meeting held at the end of June.

The level crossing is discussed in the Parish Council section. Kindest Regards

Richard Cooper-Holmes

community How fast is this year going? It seems to be flying by.

Finding a forever home

We all hope the flash floods will go for good as it creates havoc for everyone at the Sanctuary. The poor dogs don’t know where they are one minute they are happily playing or chilling in their kennels the next the heavens open and they are back inside to keep dry! Then again we are never satisfied.

We recently held our sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest. It was a beautiful sunny morning lots of people turned out to walk with their dogs. After the walk everyone enjoyed a lovely cuppa and cake. We don’t have a total for the event as yet but would like to thank everyone for their support and making our walk a huge success.

Here are a couple of dates for your diary:

along well but the heavy rain doesn’t make it easy to stick to time scales! We have just collected 6 young puppies that are beautiful but not quite ready for re homing yet. But if you are looking for a puppy, or an older dog, kitten or cat please come and see us we will be happy to have a chat and point you in the right direction. We are at Narrow Lane, Bawtry and telephone number 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 We look forward to speaking to you.

The 6th of July will be our Scrufts Dog Show at The Recreation field, Tithes Lane in Tickhill. This is an annual event that we all love as we can once again say hello to lots of dogs that we have rehomed who come along to join in the festivities - with their owners of course! It’s a wonderful day out with lots going on so please come and join us. On the 20th July we will be holding a Tom bola at Doncaster Town Fields at their annual Gala. Getting back to what’s happening at The Sanctuary. We are still knee deep in building work but we hope it isn’t too disruptive. It’s coming

Stevie was rehomed with her brother, Frank, as a kitten and has spent a very happy 4 months with her new family. Unfortunately their landlord has changed his policy with regard to pets and has refused to allow animals in his properties. Therefore they have had to return to Mayflower. Stevie is very close to her brother so a home together is essential. She is extremely affectionate and loves nothing better than to cuddle up on your knee. Have you room in your hearts and home for this adorable pair?

Hello I’m Bodie, I came to Mayflower from the local dog pound. When I first arrived at Mayflower the bones in my front legs were not growing properly and were bowed outwards....hence the name Bodie! They have now corrected themselves through good nutrition and gentle exercise. I am a very playful, loving, giddy Young lad that needs all the usual puppy training, for example toilet training, socialising and basic commands. I need a home that has plenty of time to spend with me as I’m always on the go and I love to play, with the right loving home I will grow into a beautiful young dog. If you would like to know anymore about me please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers.

‘X’ MARKS THE SPOT. . . OR DOES IT? Patients often arrive at their Physiotherapy assessment with some idea of what is wrong… ”I’ve got Achilles tendonitis/runner’s knee/tennis elbow…” Not unreasonably, this conclusion is based on the fact that it is their Achilles tendon/ knee/elbow that hurts. However, for many patients, the pain they are experiencing in one part of their body is actually caused by a problem elsewhere. This is referred pain. Left arm or jaw symptoms felt during a heart attack is a familiar example of referred pain. Although the exact mechanism explaining this sort of pain remains unclear, pain scientists believe it is linked to the way we are ‘wired up’. For instance, the nerves from your Achilles tendon share the same route to your brain as the nerves in your lower back, and your brain can’t always tell the difference between the two. If you have referred pain, the onset of pain may be hard to explain – there is no memorable injury or significant change to your training schedule or workload, the pain may be hard to find – moving and poking the painful area doesn’t quite illicit the symptoms as you would expect (though the area may still be tender to touch) and ‘treating’ the painful area (ice, massage, stretches) doesn’t work. As experts in movement and function, Physiotherapists assess the human body as a whole (we could be thought of as human engineers) enabling us to find and treat the primary source of the pain in order to maximise pain free movement and function elsewhere. You just might be surprised at what we end up treating! Caroline Hennigan BSc (Hons) MCSP, HPC Chartered Physiotherapist Bizard Physiotherapy 18

Rossington Cricket Club Despite the damp start to the summer, all three senior sides have enjoyed good starts to the season. The First XI have continued to do well despite the step up into Division 3 of the Pontefract League following last season’s promotion. The highlight was undoubtedly an emphatic win over Bentley, the side that narrowly beat them to the title last year. Matthew Haywood’s 72 set up the win, skipper Andrew Gardiner’s 6-27 completed it. The Second XI is also continuing to evolve. The side retains a youthful feel and is continuing to gain positive results whilst developing junior players. They are comfortable in mid-table and are sure to improve over the course of the season. The Sunday XI have also enjoyed a good early run. They are 3rd in the table after a superb win over Monk Bretton that yielded an outstanding opening wicket partnership of 205 between Tom Green (120) and Glen Bott (77). It really is a great platform for all sides to build from over the course of the season… If the weather holds off! New for 2014 our under 9's team, this is our 1st season with an under 9's side and are developing in confidence and experience with lots of youngsters not only playing matches

but training for the future. We have been fortunate this year to have a new influx of junior players. This means that we are able to develop all our junior teams, not only with our existing experienced players from previous years but also allowing them to step up when appropriate to develop their skills in the other age groups including the senior leagues. The start to the season has been difficult with the changing weather conditions and matches being cancelled and rearranged where possible. The under 13's team have also secured their 1st win this season against Warmsworth, hopefully with more wins to come now the weather is improving.

Rossington Parish Council The scheme of planting has started and should be finished by the time Rossington Today is published it should make Rossington look good. We have placed the order for the Christmas lights and we will be having a few opposite the Radburn Road shops, some icicle lights on the front of the Wilkinson Avenue shops and an extension to the tree lights on Stripe Road and in front of St Michaels. Any other suggestions, please contact us via the website. Hopefully the new site should be up and running by the end of the month. The Rovers’ Kicks program is now working well at the Welfare on a Friday night and the football coaching is excellent and we are now getting a good turnout and don’t forget, it is free. They have started boxing sessions; the sessions inside the youth club haven’t gone well, too many distractions. So, we have moved the boxing from the youth club, to the Memorial Hall on a Monday night and if there are enough girls we will have a separate night for them. It’s still completely free and they accept anyone from 11 to 18. It is part funded by the Parish Council. When I found out about network rails plans to close the crossing I was very upset; and to a certain extent still am. We are being consulted, at the last minute in a way that looks to be paying lip service to the process. They told me that they had 4,000 leaflets and were surprised when I told them there were 5,500 houses in Rossington. It is, as I write, one day to go until their first consultation event and I still haven’t had a leaflet telling me of the event. I have told them that they will have to repeat the event, with a much better publicity. Network Rail wants to close 82 crossings from Kings Cross to Doncaster so that they can run trains at 140 mph and run more of them and as you would expect, Rossington is the most difficult place on the whole line. They will be offering us several options, including various bridges and so we all need to visit their website or write in or even ring them and express our opinion on what should happen to the crossing. We had a pretty uneventful Annual General Meeting, we changed the size of some committees and filled the places a per Councillor’s wishes. Unfortunately long

standing member George Sheldon resigned, for personal reasons. We had a Projects Committee meeting to discuss the Party in the Park and the progress we have made. All we need is some good weather and everything to come together on the day. Please see the advert in this magazine or one of the many posters or banners around the village. The list of attractions goes on and on; come and have a good day out. We had a second Projects Committee meeting and the subject was…………wait for it………… the Party in the Park, we discussed amongst other things the Song for Rossington and its’ progress with Sharon Richards and Katherine Warman from Right up Our Street. Recycoal and Carillion are both sponsoring this event. We had a Strategy Committee meeting at which we discussed the Allotments. There is a troublesome tree that needs sorting and there is a rat problem we decided that we would give some financial help to the allotment holders, so that they can fix the problem themselves. It is hoped that the rat problem will reduce when certain works are finished. We had a second Parish Council meeting at which we discussed the FARRRS link road progress, a company wanting to build a motorway service area, putting a flagpole on the side of the Memorial Hall so that we can fly the Yorkshire flag on Yorkshire day and the English and Union flags as appropriate, and finally and inevitably the Rail Crossing proposals. We invited Network Rail and their consultants to give a presentation on their proposals and the projected impact on Rossington. It, at times, was heated, but in general well received and the consultation results will be scrutinised thoughtfully.

Maximus flora phobia true or just a tall story? I’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think. Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house. 24

ROSSINGTON TODAY

There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil. If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of

mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow …. “Oh, only four-tfive feet darling’. She actually got away with that one … until the following summer that is anyway!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

Tickhill & District Lions Tickhill & District Lions are proud to announce that three of our members (Steve Radford, Martin Harper and Graham Mickley) will be taking the rest of the year off beer to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. They’ve committed not to let a drop of alcohol (beer or otherwise) pass their lips until 2014 is out, which for those of you who know these three is a tall order! Lion-President Steve Radford said “Some people run a marathon but for various reasons, mostly laziness, we can’t do that. So this is our equivalent. It’s going to be tough; but that’s kind of the point, and once we have the first few sponsors signed up there’s no going back as it’s all for a good cause.” The three are keen to point out that they’re not planning to turn into social recluses and will be out and about supporting their local pubs as much as ever. So if you see them, or hear a shout of “mine’s a lime and soda”, please give them your support and consider popping a pound or two in their collecting tin. Alternatively you can donate via their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/yearoffbeer T 32

ROSSINGTON SCOUT GROUP The Rossington Scout Group has been busy raising money for cancer with the organisation Aurora the one to benefit. The reason for the group taking on this task was because our Beaver leader Samantha Davies was going through treatment to overcome cancer and she was a volunteered worker with Aurora and our chairman of the executive committee Arthur Green was diagnosed with cancer. The group held a stall on Rossington Market and we did a sponsored walk around the village. We raised £535 over the two events and must thank all the people for donating to this great cause. Unfortunately Arthur did not recover from his illness. He was very much involved with the scout movement right up to him going in to hospital, a total of over 83 years; he formed the Rossington group in March 1957. He asked for any donations made at his funeral should go to Doncaster Danum District Camp Site, Squirrel Wood, anyone involved with scouting will know this camp site well. The total donation made came to £665; This was presented to the Camp Warden during a weekend Cub Scout camp and will go towards buying an industrial grass cutting tractor which will be named Arthur. On behalf of the group I would like to thank all those who donated money to these causes. Jim Paterson • GSL

A letter from your Methodist Minister Dear Friends, A story is told of a boy who received an unusual Christmas present. The boy peeled back the layers of wrapping paper from the tiny box. Inside he found a small, hand-written note from his father. “Son,” it read, “this year I will give you 365 hours, an hour every day after dinner.” This young man found the gift as the greatest gift he had ever had in his life. The reason was that his dad not only kept his promise, but every year he renewed it. This boy claimed that he has become what he is due to his father’s one-houra-day investment in his life. One hour of leading, loving, and learning changed the boy’s life for good. Someone has noted that time for our family is like oxygen to our bodies. It is a minimum necessary for survival. And it takes quantity as well as quality to develop warm and caring relationships. On the other hand, there was another family that was always bidding for more time. Dad was an expert in hurrying – hurrying for work, school runs, holidays, and you name it. The family never enjoyed anything because they were always hurrying on to do something else. I wonder if both situations described above ring a bell in our lives. We sometimes forget that God is a parent who has promised to be with us always and is sticking to his promise. However, he waits for us to make time with him. He yearns for us to have a relationship with him and he’s always waiting for us to show up. But, most often, we are too busy running around and ending up not enjoying life as it is meant to be. God is not expecting us to show up when things get off hand in our lives. Like the first case, he expects us to have some time together with him daily – maybe a few minutes or an hour or more depending on our circumstances. It could be reading a bible passage, prayer, reflecting on an issue, etc.

indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10: 38-42) I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead (Philippians 3: 10-11). This summer as we engage in the hot weather and become busier than before, we are reminded that God is still waiting for us to be in his presence. Have a good summer break. God bless.

Friends of Brodsworth Way During the June coffee morning and under our Constitution, a decision was taken to dissolve "Friends of Brodsworth Way" after 5 years of trying to bring our community together. It's sad but we are currently in talks with Doncaster Council about them placing a bench seat across the football field, behind the Brodsworth Way Pavilion, opposite side to the current bench seat, so that the evening sun can be enjoyed by anyone who might like to have a sit down, and as a lasting reminder. So, our final coffee morning will be held on Thursday 3rd July, 9 to 11am, in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion. We've had some good banter and friendships have been formed, so it has all been worthwhile. I would like to express my sincere thanks to those who have given their support, from the group's inception in 2009 to the present. Thank you. Regards, Susan • Tel: 869001

I wonder if I can remind you of the results of being in the presence of your maker daily by quoting a couple of bible passages: As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
