Welcome to the

Andrew Isaacs

JULY 2013 edition of Rossington Today.

‘‘

There are two seasons in Scotland - Winter and July ~ Billy Connelly

ok so this quote relates to scotland but to be honest i think it can be applied to most of northern Britain too! July already and I for one, am hoping that summer is upon us. School children are preparing for the summer break, exams finished for this year, and the joys of sports day, end of term concerts and school reports are ahead. For parents of school children July does of course herald the start of at least 6 weeks of entertaining children – looked forward to by many, but dreaded by others! Personally I love the break from routine and my days being less timetabled by school runs and evening activities, although I am lucky to have more flexibility in my working hours than most working parents. Whatever plans you have for July, I hope that the sun shines on you, and I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy the longer days while they last. The August issues will be delivered to you late July, anything that you would like included should be with me by Friday 12th July.

Divorce Lawyer “Andrew combines a high degree of intelligence with a phenomenal work rate, knowledge of the Law and desire to succeed which has always meant he was a formidable opponent and preferably someone to have on your side.” Roger Senior, Senior Partner of Coles Miller LLP

Best wishes, Paula x

Parents. . .

hang in there Hello from Cause for a Cuppa Haven’t the warmer days been nice? Though i should have mentioned it in last month’s article, we have just crossed over the 10 year barrier of being in rossington. it has been great to meet so many of you. We are looking forward to the adventure over the next 10! Speaking of adventure, SURELY that has to be a word you can apply to fetching up children. There are some things I’ll just never understand. For example, isn’t it amazing that you can have 2 (or 3 or 4 ... you get the point) live in the same house, eat the same food and breathe the same air but can be as different as chalk and cheese? Some (rare souls out there) are compliant ... some (the bulk) would argue to the death that 1+1=3. How about this? I grew up having responsibilities that were age appropriate. But along with that, I somehow got it drilled into my head that if you are gonna do

6 6

ROSSINGTON TODAY

a job, might as well do it properly the first time. But it wasn’t easy. I remember thinking that writing “thank you” notes was near enough torture. Doing the washing up was a pain. Now I am pretty sure my mum had a time with me. (I am glad she didn’t give up on me.) But I AM sure I had a time with my own. If you do washing up, food bits in the prongs of a fork ... I am certain ... aren’t meant to be there. How about .. “Umm, you see that tall row of grass out there and the short row beside it ... it all needs to be short”. If I had a 2p every time I

said “ok, let’s do it again” I’d be a rich man. Now I am not moaning too loudly. Actually something amazing has happened. My 21 year old came home from uni a month ago. I asked him to cut the grass. But wait a minute! Not only did he go over it twice (it was really long) but took the strimmer AND cut by hand the bits round the fence line. After I recovered from my heart attack, I saw that he put all the tools back into the garage. So parents ... hang in there! It is worth it! As always if you would like to pop in for a cuppa and chat, the doors are always open (well, at least from 9-5).

Rossington Councillor’s update - JULY 2013 You will be pleased to know that the first priority for ros Jones after Children’s services is making our roads better. i know they are bad, but not the worst in doncaster. What roads worse than Queen Mary’s are like are beyond imagination! Let’s see what will happen. By the time this is published we should have had the flowers replanted, this year in conjunction with the Parish Council I’ve used some Section 106 money that was available to buy, fill and maintain a number of planters. These will be spread about the village to ensure that all areas look good. Rossington will indeed be in bloom. We have a dog fouling problem, none more so than on the Welfare fields. Despite the availability of dog bins, there are some uncaring dog owners and dog walkers who do not pick up their dog’s mess. The Welfare is used by a large number of children and adults playing sport and the last thing anyone in their right mind wants is kids falling in dog faeces carrying diseases. It is just downright disgusting. Dog owners should clean up after their dogs. There are laws that can be used to prosecute these uncaring people and DMBC’s teams will do so, even on private land.

have been swapped with Sue Philips from Mexborough and I replace her as Vice Chair of Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee (OSMC). I remain on Regeneration and Environment Overview and Scrutiny Panel (R&E), as an ordinary member. The ‘Work Planning Sessions’ have taken place for the two committees. These meetings set out the work list for the forthcoming year. There will be a completely different feel to these committees and we now have a Labour Mayor and Cabinet, more critical friend than scrutinising and correcting. We will ensure all is OK, but we will be working closely together. The Area teams have yet again changed with Steve Thomas having an even bigger area to look after, another cost cutting measure forced on us. I just hope that this is not one cut too far! It will now be the South West Area and go from Finningley Ward to Mexborough Ward round Doncaster. They will still be based at Holmescarr with an outpost in Edlington.

We’ve had the Council AGM and I was asked to propose Eddie Dobbs, Ward Member for Thorne, as our new Civic Mayor and Chair of Council. The Deputy Mayor for this year is also a good friend of mine, Dave Nevett, Ward Member for Kirk Sandall, Edenthorpe and Barnby Dun. I’m sure we will get them to Rossington a good number of times. At the AGM appointments to committees and outside bodies were agreed and unfortunately for me I am no longer on the Fire Authority, I 8 8

A Fun Day, in conjunction with St Leger Homes and the Police, was held on Pheasant Bank School fields during the school holidays and was an enormous success with about 350 attending. Watch out for posters announcing these events throughout the village; they will be held on a regular basis as part of the ASB prevention strategy. We will be having them at different venues, and everyone will be invited. T

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Could you do with a helping hand?

Talk to Extra Help for the complete solution We can help with: • Cleaning & tidying • Ironing • Gardening • Dog walking • Household maintenance • Shopping • Meal preparation ….and so much more! From £10 per hour.

it’s a well-known fact that, despite the rapid advancement of technology, we as a nation are more time-poor than ever. a common complaint that people regularly utter is “i don’t have enough time.” Time to work, cook, complete jobs in the home, look after children and other family members, walk the dog, do the gardening, keep fit…the list is endless. Being productive can result in enormous achievements, but almost always comes at a cost. At some point, even the most highly motivated people need to ask themselves how long they can keep up the effort and whether the time devoted to working and rushing about could have been better spent relaxing with family and friends.

We all have exactly the same amount of time available to us, but have you ever noticed how some people seem to be less time-poor than others, effortlessly achieving more in one day than others struggle to accomplish in a week? What’s their secret? Is it that they’re well organised and highly skilled at juggling priorities, or is it simply that they don’t try to do everything themselves and are not afraid of delegating when they need to? There’s no need to shoulder the burden alone when reliable, affordable help is available. If you’re struggling to keep on top of your to-do list, why not give Extra Help a call? We provide a wide range of services, including domestic tasks, gardening, dog walking, shopping, meal preparation and many more. Extra Help was originally formed to respond to the needs of elderly people who were living independently and required occasional or regular assistance to manage their daily routines. Since then we’ve expanded our services to provide help to anyone who needs it, from new and working parents to busy professionals. Covering the Doncaster area, our reliable, fully screened home-helpers and cleaners are available to provide the assistance you need, and only when it’s needed. We always strive to provide you with the same home-helper or cleaner, but ensure we arrange cover in the event of absence, sickness or holidays. So you can rest assured that your helping hand will always be there for you when you need it. T Delivered FREE to over 5700 homes | www.todaypublications.co.uk

Rossington Parish Council - JULY 2013 Well the vintage vehicle and steam show was a huge success with about 750 visitors on saturday and about a thousand on the sunday. We expected about 250 exhibitors, but there was more than that on saturday and about 350 on sunday. We even had about 180 camping. apart from a few hiccups, sorted before the event the only problem we had was with a dog walker who threatened violence if his dogs couldn’t do their business on the fields. He didn’t clean up after them either. It should be noted that the Welfare and its’ fields are private property and no one has the right to do anything without the Welfare Trust’s approval. Historically the miners that worked in the colliery paid a subscription towards the upkeep and development, but that is long gone. A charitable Trust was set up to manage the whole of the Welfare and in effect own the land. There are no rights of way, and certainly no right to walk a dog on there. It is a sports field where people, mostly children, can occasionally be on the ground and the last thing they need is to be covered in dog poo! What makes it worse is that all the people camping had to clean the area up before they could use the place. These were guests from all over the north of England and what do they see of Rossington – Dog Poo! The village consultation has now finished with some very interesting results; we had a really good return with 153 completed forms. 51.6% said our housing proposals were right with 37.9% disagreeing, 58.2% agreed with the PGA proposals with 35.9% disagreeing, 64.7% said our industry proposals were right and 24.2% disagreed, 62.1% said that the ‘triangle’ should remain 24 24

greenbelt, only 11.8% said they would help the library and some of those already did! A whopping 85.6% thought our events were at the right level, 17.6% would help the Parish Council, 64.7% thought ASB and crime were average when the 7.8% who said low were right, crime and ASB is low in Rossington. Now that the first major festival is finished we now concentrate on making the Medieval Festival on the 27th and 28th July a success. We have the warriors and knights, and all the performers. We have a good number of stall holders, but want more. We have music for Saturday evening and wandering minstrels for the day, we have jesters and storytellers. All we really need is good weather and an excellent turnout. Earlybird ticket £6 adults and £3 for children (on the day £9 & £5) Tickets can be purchased from Doncaster Tourist information Centre, the Blue Building, High Street Doncaster, or from Jim Beaumont, c/o The Memorial Hall, McConnell Crescent Rossington DN11 0PL or from our website http://www. rossingtonmedievalfestival.org.uk/ The Parish Council had its’ AGM and I was re-elected as Chair, we had a few changes in committee chairs and structure, the biggest change is the increase in numbers on the Projects committee to match the work load. At the Parish Meeting just before the AGM, several members of the public attended and the Chair gave his report followed by the chairs of the sub committees. Under matters arising a question was raised about the jubilee wood and a description of what had gone on was given i.e. it has been planted although not on the land Malc Clark had kindly offered.

The following items were raised by electors: flower arrangements made more visible, is the Beer Festival an appropriate event, Holmescarr Wood flooding issue resolved, footpath diversion still not complete, too much weedkiller in use by DMBC, Cllr N Fennelly asked for events volunteers, it was announced that the Carnival will not take place this year. Garden View

Take a Break as i take a break from the heat of the mid day sun perched under the shade of a Banyan tree, i am staggered by its beauty and the clever way it has adapted to colonising and ‘getting around’. The large structures which develop from the underside of the 20 foot high branches head south and take root into the dry dusty soil as they hit the ground. With a record high temperature of 100 (f) and only 30 inches of water per year these are pretty hostile conditions - you may have noticed, i am not in the UK! An 11 hour flight will transport you to Key West, Florida where the views are simply breathtaking and although some locals claim you can almost see Cuba (at a mere 90 miles out to sea?) I found some of the best views had no distance at all. For me the most stunning were the small, intimate courtyards created to the front and rear sides of the colonial houses. These beautiful little oases in the town provide not only

a welcoming entrance, but also a cool shady place, where the several layers of plants seem at home. Although none of them indigenous to the area (due to the lack of soil on the island) they grow happily together and have done for years mainly thanks to the daily irrigation! The plants are there for one reason only, to provide much needed shade from the sun. The plant life is diverse due to this being the only frost free place in the USA and to me, looks like a scene from my local garden centres houseplant department. Ficus trees and Coconut palms provide shade for less sun loving ferns. All tropical and all enjoying the high humidity (so that’s why the tips of my parlour palm always go brown! As I sit in the garden located at the rear of the oldest house on the island a small lizard drinks from what’s left

of a puddle, created by the irrigation system of course. Jamaican style music plays in the background, its origin a local bar I presume, disturbed only by the intermittent and even louder ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ thanks to the resident cockerel. Set free many years ago as a result of illegal cock fighting, these chirpy chaps roam free here, having found it easy to become native – and I can see why. T

ROSSINGTON TODAY

Work on improving facilities down at oxford street commenced within a week of the last ball being kicked at the end of the season and a group of volunteers began re-structuring and re-painting in preparation for the august start of the new season. The playing surface was also reseeded and fertilised and a schedule of improvements mapped out. imagine our surprise and delight when in the midst of this programme of refurbishment we heard that doncaster rovers had agreed to bring their 1st team squad to play a pre-season friendly at rossington on Tuesday July 9th.

We are honoured that the Rovers have once again decided to support their community fan base

and bring their new Championship squad to play at our ground and we hope the local community will take advantage of this opportunity to view the town’s professional side. At the same time the Club is likely to benefit from revenue generated by a healthy attendance on the night. It does mean that our improvement works have a tighter schedule and if any local firms or businesses can help with materials or work-force in the lead-up to the game, then please contact us. Similarly we are open to match sponsorship opportunities for the game itself, and any volunteers who can assist with stewarding or other jobs during the evening.! T

HORNETS

The season ended but a few short weeks ago and already we are looking forward to the coming season with baited breath. Yorkshire 5 has had some new faces added for the latest term as well as some old faces returning from Yorkshire 4 after unsuccessful campaigns. This will mean some extended travel commitments with the proximity of games at adwick and sheffield removed and replaced with jaunts to Thirsk and Hull! The Hornets can look forward to a promising season this year based upon a retention of key players from last year and the welcome addition

of some new faces to bolster the squad. The team is growing together well and this group of players can look to a long future together with the average age of the team being around 23 years old. Pre-season training is coming around quickly with the scheduled start date of the serious stuff pencilled in for July, however there are continued sessions on-going on a Thursday night from 7pm and all are welcome to attend. as always you can find further information on the Hornets including fixtures, results, match reports and training details at http://www.pitchero.com/ clubs/rossingtonhornets.! Wheelers cylcling club a bit of a truncated month on the open race front for the club as the roadworks continue to cause events to be moved, amended or even cancelled. The weather, though only causing one round of the aad Gas Handicap League to be cancelled hasn’t made things favourable for riders, but with consistency and improvement the keys to success the League table is now taking shape at the halfway stage of the twenty round series, also many competitors have scored PB’s on those more favourable evenings: rob shepherd .................................54 Leading veteran Mark Billingham .............................36 alex irvine (14).................................35 Leading Junior dan vir...............................................33 Cheryl Craven ..................................32 Leading Lady July also sees the club host its own Open 25 mile Time Trial as part of the JE James League. The Club Run program continues in full swing through these next two months and riding the five Sunday Club Run’s starting from 30/06 will clock you in excess of 420 miles, including the longest Sunday haul of the year – 125 miles to Cleethorpes! The club’s other weekly rides on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s are also increasingly popular and a number of more talented and dedicated members are now joining the local ‘chain gang’ rides – which operate at a proper serious pace – 25mph plus! The Dales weekend produced spectacular weather...(spectacularly bad on the ride up) but spectacularly

good for the serious business of the Saturday ride. The ride included five climbs from the ‘Hundred Toughest Climbs’ book, including Tan Hill, Buttertubs Pass, Fleet Moss and culminating in the insanely tough climb of Park Rash up out of Kettlewell – six members achieving a faultless round. Lots going on in terms of rides at the club, too many to list in detail – visit www.rossingtonwheelers. com and follow the links or visit Les

at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue, Rossington to find out more and enjoy another July of British success at Le Tour to whet the appetite for next year! T

i am a very loving girl that just wants to be by my owners side all the time, which is something i need a little help with as i have separation issues and don’t like to be left, i am also good with other dogs and am used to living with them. I may not be a puppy anymore but I am still always on the go, so need a home that will provide me with a lot of mental and physical stimulation. I have done agility training in the past and absolutely loved it so I would love to carry something like this on in my new home. If you think you have room in your home for a spirited little dog like me then please don’t hesitate to talk to one of my carers. T

Friends of Brodsworth Way Residents Group i apologise for jumping ahead of myself in the last issue of rossington Today when i said July instead of June for the coffee morning. Hopefully, the error in month was spotted although the date itself was correct. Thanks to the thirteen who turned up in June. so, the July coffee morning, will be held in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion, on Thursday 11th, 9.25 to 11.15am. We had an incident on the estate (late May) where a cat was shot in the chest with an air gun. This happened somewhere in the Chatsworth Drive/ Brodsworth Way area. Fortunately, she survived this ordeal although it was touch and go for 48 hours. I guess she used up one of her nine lives! It would be appreciated if you know of this kind of incident if you would kindly notify the Police. Regards Susan (Tel. 869001) T event sponsored & organised by
