Dr Seuss

Well I am inclined to agree. Of course it’s lovely opening carefully wrapped gifts and seeing delight on people’s faces from presents bought at the shops. (Even better when those gifts have been bought locally)! But it’s so easy to overdo it with the pressures of life nowadays. Christmas Day, is the perfect day to do nothing but spend TIME. It’s one of those precious days of the year where everyone expects you to be with friends and family, so grab it with both hands and even if you can only afford a couple of smaller gifts for your children or grandchildren make sure they’re ones that you can sit and do together. Kids love nothing more than to make things, and to have their parents/grandparents interact with them so use your imagination this year. And please spare a thought and some time for those without family who may be lonely this Christmas, and for those who do have to work to ensure that our hospitals and other essential services continue to function. Whatever you choose to do in the run-up to the special day make sure it is happy, peaceful and fun. The January issue will be delivered to you during the festive season – sometime between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this then please ensure details are with me by Friday 6th December – early I know but these magazines need to be produced, printed, sorted and delivered to all of my lovely distributors before I can take some time off with my family this Christmas!. Christmas? Can you believe Christmas is here?! Hello again from the USA office of Cause for a Cuppa. By the way, it would be nice if those Yanks knew how to make a proper cup of tea. :) Someone recently walked up to me a couple weeks ago and handed me a small box of PG Tips. I couldn’t believe it! There is hope yet.

By the time you read this, we will be (God willing) safely back in Rossington (Lisa and Chase will be with me the last fortnight here). We will arrive to the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas. I love it. Yes, things can go a bit OTT at times. I tire of minced pies fairly quickly and had to Google “mulled cider” to know what it means. But I had a couple of quick Christmas-y things I wanted to throw out as you come to this holiday with your family. Christmas is meant to be all about “Christ”. Otherwise I could easily call it “Eric-mas”. But it just doesn’t sound right. I know Jesus often gets a bad rap. But have you ever tried to look at who Jesus is and what He offers with an open mind and curious heart? You may be somewhat surprised. Christmas

services this year may be a great place to start. Hunt down someone who you think could answer some questions and just ... go for it. Secondly, I was thinking about ...

warning ... I am going to swear ... “gift(s)”. OK, now I said it. I know all of us have different opinions and life experiences around that 4 letter word. I was reading a book, If I Knew Then What I Know Now (Berkley Publishing, 1995), which is a gathering of short thoughts from people who have been through the School of Hard Knocks and have scars to prove it. Amazingly, I have yet to find someone say they wished they would have spent more time at the office or shop. As the title implies, they basically complete the phrase: “if I had to do it all over again, I would

...”. One such thought stuck me as one of those .. “what a great idea, wish I would have thought of it”. Rich Gold, president of R.N. Gold & Company, states “When your children are born, and every year thereafter, write them a letter on their birthday. Save them up, but don’t tell anyone. Then give your children their letters on their twenty-first birthdays”. That is an idea worth its weight in ... I am gonna say it ... “gold”. Hey, even if you missed the 1st, 2nd or 5th birthdays, start this year and give them a gift like no other. Merry Christmas to all!

Rossington Councillor’s update - DECEMBER 2013 I am off sick at the moment, but sitting at home doing what I can over the phone or getting people to come to me. However I did go out to the Bonfire organised by the Parish Council and the Remembrance Day Parade organised by the Rossington British Legion. The Bonfire was a huge success Thank you Parish Council. The Remembrance Day Parade set off from the Welfare where the British Legion are based and marched (unfortunately not me, I went by car) to the Methodist Church for the service and then to the Memorial Hall for the salute, the wreath laying, the reading of the names of the fallen and the Last Post. I would like to thank all those who took part and all those who attended. It was as usual well attended and well supported by the Army Cadets, Scouts and others. Caroline Flint was in attendance as was your Councillor Hilary McNamee. Ros Jones, our Mayor, has started a ‘Conversation’ with the public regarding the enormous and totally savage and unjust budget cuts imposed by this Government. They are trying to destroy local democracy and Local Government by imposing these cuts. It is not to save the economy, which their supporters, the bankers, damaged, but just a ‘cheap’ political ploy to impose their political dogma on us under the smokescreen of trying to save the economy. Anyway it is a chance for everyone to have their say on where these cuts fall. The Government cuts will mean that basic services that we expect, but the Council don’t have to supply, will be cut to the bone or cut altogether. It may result in things that we don’t want, no children’s centres, no swimming pools, even less libraries, no old folk’s 10 10

ROSSINGTON TODAY

homes, no day centres….. the list goes on. When this Government announced the cuts it was for £112 million and we have already saved £93 million, and that was difficult, but all of a sudden, we have to cut an extra £108 million, and to be honest, no one really knows where that is going to come from. DMBC started with just under £500 million in the non-schools budget when the Tories and Liberals came to power, we will be left with less than £300 million when they are finished. That is way beyond the cuts in efficiency that was purported to be the main reason in the beginning. Southern Tory voting councils have had no-where near this level of cuts – and they are getting all the inward investment from the Government. North – South divide be damned it is the North – South chasm it is getting so big and so unjust that it will be self-perpetuating and almost unstoppable. We have got to hope that Labour gets in next time. Anyway I’ve had my rant and now for the good news; the preliminary work for the link road has started, the archaeological and biodiversity surveys have started and the other preliminary works are ongoing including a

temporary bridge over the Torne and this should all be finished in less than 2 years. This with the inland port and all the other job opportunities that arise from our new connectivity will hopefully see Rossington’s prosperity improve. The new houses on the pit site and the golf course development will also bring improvements.

Kindest Regards

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

community Dear Friends, Christmas is about peace, isn’t it? I may be very young but I have learnt one thing in this world as I grow up. I wonder if I may be wrong but I have realised that when one war is about to end, at least another one starts. My opinion is that some people seem to find it difficult to live at peace with others. It could be seen in family feuds, divisions at the work places, misunderstandings within tribes, clans, cultures, religions, etc. If each of us is given the chance, we may name a few issues in our experiences or that of those we know which may have disturbed our peace. However, it’s not all that bad when it comes to Christmas. God decided to come to this world in the form of a baby in order to bring peace to all situations. From the Bible, the Prophet Isaiah predicted his birth a few hundred years before he was born in Bethlehem. He went further to predict his name: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end (Isaiah 9: 6-7).

Peace at Christmas

Christians believe that the Prince of Peace was born on Christmas day. We know him as Jesus. He lived on earth and brought peace to people by healing, teaching and helping them. He also brought peace to those who believed in him by dying on the cross for their sins. Before his death he promised peace to this world. Moreover, after his death and resurrection, he breathed peace unto his followers. He also encourages us to live at peace with all people. We can do that by treating people with respect and being good to others. That’s the spirit of Christmas. However, it’s not a one-off gimmick. We are entreated to do so daily. I wonder if we can see everyday of our lives as Christmas in order to become agents of

peace in our own small world. Most people hope for the best for others at Christmas. I wonder if I can recommend to you that as you express your love to family and friends, may you also consider living at peace with others. You may try to do your part as you extend a hand of friendship to the vulnerable in society. This Christmas, my prayer is that the God of peace, through his son Jesus Christ, be with you. I also pray that he may grant you your heart’s desire as you look forward to a peaceful new year in your life.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year greetings to you all.

Rossington Parish Council - DECEMBER 2013 Rossington’s Bonfire and Firework Display was the biggest and best in the whole of Doncaster – and that’s not us saying that, but people from outside Rossington. We had 2500 to 3000 people attend the most amazing bonfire, the most enormous one I have ever seen. Even the Guy sat on a garden bench looked pleased. Steve Thomas, as usual, made the lighting of the bonfire go off with a bang! I didn’t think that the bonfire could get bigger, but with the help of local companies and the staff of the Area team it was built in a day and had 120 to 200 tonnes of wood on it. Even at the lowest estimate that’s a lot of wood. This was scrap wood ready for landfill, so no trees were cut down for our event. Fuse Fireworks pulled out all the stops and we had a choreographed display of sound and fireworks that was truly spectacular and enjoyed by all. The new idea of making the evening last worked well with Rossington’s own Kelly Rox and local star of the future, James Taplin both supplying excellent music for all the crowd. Recycoal Ltd. are donating 10p per tonne of coal sold from the pit tip recovery to good causes and with the Parish Council are allocating small grants to local good causes and groups and they are now available. Application forms can be obtained from Recycoal at Lakeside of from our Parish Clerk, Barry Chadwick at the Opportunity Centre, in the Holmescarr Centre. The grants are allocated on a first come, first serve basis as funds come in as the coal is sold, so this will be ongoing as long as Recycoal are here. Because of the enormous Government cuts £108,000,000 in the next three years, following the £93,000,000 cuts in the last three years there are concerns about the future of the Leisure Centre and the Youth Club. The Parish Council is conscious that most people in the village wish to 20 20

ROSSINGTON TODAY

keep both facilities open for all to use. We are looking at ways to keep them open and as usual it means that it will cost. If the Government caps the Parish Council precept as it is threatening to do, it will mean that keeping them both open will be difficult. If they allow us to increase the precept then we have a chance. This increase would be in double figures as it is not cheap to keep both open! So, two action groups will be formed, ‘Save Our Swimming Pool’ and ‘Save our Youth Club’ and volunteers/helpers/ interested parties will be needed. Please contact Barry Chadwick at the Opportunity Centre, in the Holmescarr Centre. The only meeting in the last month was the Parish Council meeting; I missed this due to ill health, so Carol Beaumont took over as Chair in my place and did her usual fine job. It was a well-attended meeting and at times somewhat heated. The second half of the colliery winding wheel needs moving soon from its current storage place and Recycoal have volunteered to help. An extended discussion took place over the siting of the existing Memorial and its future. There was no agreed outcome to this and no doubt it will be raised again. A discussion took place regarding the co-opting of new members onto the Parish Council and their eligibility. The criterion for being co-opted on to the Parish Council is; you have to be on the electoral register and you have to live, work or own a business within the parish bounds or within approximately 3.8 miles of the boundary and express an interest in becoming a Parish Councillor! You don’t have to make a speech, you don’t have to have a background check, you don’t have to have to present a CV and you don’t even have to turn up to the co-opting meeting, you just have to meet the simple newly introduced co-opting procedure.

Questions were asked by the public about the speed indicator sign on Littleworth Lane and you will be please to know that work is to start early December with completion before Christmas. It was asked if the accounts regarding events could be collated, but this is too time-consuming and all the costings are published every month anyway, so the information is there in the public domain. Finally, for information, I have been told that St Mary’s Road will be resurfaced before the end of the financial year! T

Surviving Christmas Surviving a modern day Christmas can be challenge enough for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a plant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force fed with growthstunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table …. and here’s me feeling sorry for the turkey! It seems such a shame that after all the effort, you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year will be different though, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yuletide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive (until New Year at least!). House plants give such a wonderful display, and are sure to last longer than a bunch of flowers. Choose from large flowering Cyclamen, brightly coloured Azaleas, sweetly scented Jasmine and of course the traditional Poinsettia. Oh, and don’t forget about bulbs, ‘Paperwhite’ Narcissus are synonymous with Christmas, and forced Hyacinths too, but I can appreciate that their strong scent is best savoured in spring. Before we go on to the care of houseplants, let’s just clear one thing up, houseplants hate houses! Dry central heating, low light levels and draughts are all things houseplants really don’t like, as most of these plants come from very humid, 22 22

ROSSINGTON TODAY

tropical parts of the world. The best way to ensure your flowers bloom for longer and your leaves don’t go brown at the tips, is to ensure the right conditions for survival. Avoid placing plants in a draughty location such as windowsills, or near to a frequently opened door, (they won’t appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature) Avoid hotspots, such as in front of or above a radiator or fire Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water, and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water, (but ensure plants are not sat in water) Create a ‘plant area’ where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity Avoid direct sunshine Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated, water little and often Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering And finally, don’t get emotionally attached, think of flowering houseplants as a medium term bunch of flowers or a Christmas decoration, and after flowering if they look a little jaded, return them to the compost heap in the sky - I don’t think there’s any worse house plant tragedy

than a straggly Poinsettia in July with three stunted yellow leaves. Poinsettias are popular because they look wonderful, but here’s a little word of warning, be careful not to get the sap of a Poinsettia on your skin as they can cause irritation, and always keep them out of reach of pets and children. T

Have a wonderful Christmas andYear Happy New

Rossington Main October began with a narrow defeat at home to current League leaders Cleethorpes Town by 3 goals to 2. This was followed by a run of three consecutive victories. Our run was halted when Knaresborough beat us 4-2.

Since then our fortunes have taken a downward spiral as we enter December on the back of five consecutive defeats, but more importantly without the services of our Manager Steve Lodge, who stepped down following the game at Hall Road Rangers, after 3 years in charge of 1st team affairs at the Club. Knowing we had no-one to take his place for the game the following Tuesday, it is to his credit that he accepted the responsibility to lead the team once more, putting the Club before his own personal issues. The Club is grateful for the contribution Steve displayed throughout his term of office, for not only did he take responsibility for the 1st team and been actively committed to improving the Club’s status, he has been hugely responsible for the improvement in facilities at Oxford Street by volunteering most of his free time to undertake tasks in his added role as a committee member. With the new Manager’s position advertised, committee member Dave Burley volunteered to fill the gap in the interim period. Managing a side at this level is never easy, so a huge vote of thanks to Dave for keeping the Club “afloat”. As I write this article interviews for the Manager’s position are on-going, and the Club hope to have appointed a successor in time for the trip to Barnsley on Dec. 16th to face League pace-setters Shaw Lane Aquaforce. So we enter a new era for the Club and may see the community aspect come to an end. However we must move forwards as we have developed our ground and facilities to achieve 28 28

ROSSINGTON TODAY

this aim, we have always given local youngsters the opportunity to play at a higher level and I feel certain this will continue. The “seed has been sown” and the Club must continue to function at this level (or above) if only to satisfy the work put in by everyone in recent years. Apologies to the 2nd team for limiting their coverage, but October and early November has been rather more encouraging, although they too have lost twice in recent weeks

but still lie 2nd in the Senior League Premier Division. A 6-1 home win over Armthorpe saw us progress in the K.O. Cup and a 5-1 success against Sheffield Bankers saw us through to the next round of the Sheffield Assoc. Cup, but we lost 3-1 in the second round away at Sheffield Lane Top. T

Cyclocross 2013

How’s that?

The nights are drawing in, the mercury is plummeting, and yes the monstrous behemoth that is Christmas lies menacingly around the corner. At these times it’s always nice to look back on the summer that’s just been, a summer that Rossington Cricket Club can be very satisfied with. The 1st XI secured promotion to the Pontefract League Division 3 after a campaign that had its fair share of ups and downs. After initially surging into a hefty lead at the top, a mid-season slump threatened to destroy the initial hard work. Rossington slipped out of the promotion places before recovering their form just when it mattered most. It went down to the wire;

but promotion was finally secured in the final game of the season. The 2nd XI also had their fair share of excitement throughout the season. There was times when they struggled to get a side out, but there were also astonishing victories in tight games where Rossington invariably held their nerve in testing circumstances. An indefatigable team spirit was shown throughout the season. Pleasingly a core nucleus of juniors emerged in the team, displaying plenty of skill and heart as they mixed it with the senior cricketers. For the Sunday XI, 2013 cannot be described as a vintage season. Defeats were aplenty at first, but a late season resurgence ensured the year ended very much on a high note. Again several juniors grasped the chances they were given

DELIVERED FREE TO OVER 5700 HOMES | www.todaypublications.co.uk

meaning the team can look ahead to a brighter season next year. Finally congratulations to the following seniors and juniors, who all received trophies at our recent presentation night: Juniors Under 11 Player of Year - Reece Innes, Junior Player of Year - Haydn Briggs, Under 13 bowling - Haydn Briggs, Under 13 batting - Brendan Parker Seniors. 1st team batting - Michael Richardson, 1st team bowling - Scott Wood, 2nd team batting - Neil Blackman, 2nd team bowling - Scott Johnson, 3rd team batting - Dave Beasley, 3rd team bowling - Roy Nelson, Player of Year - Scott Wood. Brownies MP visit Caroline Flint enjoyed a “Brownies Question Time” in October as she met 51st Doncaster Brownies in Rossington. The evening was organised by Katie Wormald, a Brownies Young Leader Said Katie: “The Brownies really enjoyed Caroline coming to visit them and talking about what her job entails. They got the opportunity to ask her questions. The girls really enjoyed hearing about her daily life and even the tap dancing group she was part of. “The main reason we invited Caroline to come and speak to the girls because we wanted to show the Brownies what being an

MP is like, and all of the different jobs that are out there for them. As a section of Girlguiding, we aim to provide the girls with opportunities that they might not get anywhere else and to give them a voice. Caroline’s visit showed them that women have a voice in society and that the Brownies can become a part of that, if they want.” Caroline said: “The Q&A was fantastic. The Brownie Leaders want to inspire these girls to believe that they can achieve whatever they want in the future – and I could see some future MPs among them. It is easy to see why this Brownie group is so successful.” T
