I hope that everyone has had a great start to 2014. For me, Christmas already seems an awful long time ago. But then as I was working on the Christmas magazine back in October and November, and by the time you receive this issue I will be working on Mother’s Day and Easter! There does appear to be a lot to look forward to in 2014 as I keep hearing about events across the area that I will endeavour to bring you more details of over the coming months. If you are in contact with the organisers of any of these events then do ask them to get in touch so that we can ensure they get some promotion. There are now 5 magazines that make up the ‘Today Publications’ selection. Tickhill Today will be celebrating its 9th birthday next month and Rossington Today its 8th birthday. Bawtry Today will be 7 this summer and Harworth and Bircotes Today is nearly 3! So before Christmas we launched Bessacarr & Cantley Today which over the course of 2 months reaches 9000 homes. If anyone knows of anyone who might find this magazine (or any of the Today Publications) useful – whether they be a business owner or involved with a local group, school or charity then please do encourage them to get in touch. The March issues will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th February. Apologies if this sounds very early – but it is the 2nd Friday as normal – but the dates of many months this year seem to make this date fall very early in the month!
Enjoy February and I will back in a months’ time with your March magazine! T
Best wishes, Paula x

What is LOVE? I pray you have had a great start to 2014! It seems like each month brings a special day of one sort or another. Leap year happens in February but the next one is not till 2016. But there is a day that appears every year in February. It is Valentine’s Day. I know Valentine’s Day doesn’t get that much press but it does bring up a subject that seems simple on the label but once you open it, isn’t so straight forward. There has probably been no other topic that has had more songs, stories, films, operas, books, jokes written about it than that four letter word ... love. The Beatles remind us that “all you need is love”. That is a nice thought but the last time I went to ASDA, the till worker asked me “cash or card”. Love wasn’t even an option! Elvis talked about this place to go on holiday, “Heartbreak Hotel”. I am not sure it would be good value for money. I mean, who needs it?! If you could make a few bob from “heartbreak”, there are enough teens running round Rossington with plenty of it. I doubt that they would

even be able to give it away. Then there is the Y4 lad who was overheard saying … “I love you Claire … but next week I am going to love Chloe”. Love is just one of those things that is near enough impossible to
define. Not only that, there are many different KINDS of love. The love for sport or a hobby is certainly different (or rather should be) the love for your partner. How about if we change our thinking a bit from how we feel to what we do. If I had a 2p for every time I have heard or read “I just don’t feel like I love him/her any more”, I’d be a wealthy bloke. Our choice to love influences February Messy Church what we do. 10 Feb (Monday) AND In any 13 Feb (Thursday) relationship, 3.30-5.30 pm feelings come Holmescarr Community Centre and go. If we (Grange Lane nr. disappointment coming. But if you will choose to love your mate through all the thick & thin, that is where the magic happens. Lisa recently showed me a Facebook picture of an Asian couple who just celebrated 88 years of marriage … wow! Oh, by the way, it is out of love that Jesus went to the cross and died to make forgiveness of sins possible for any who would ask. Now THAT is love! Remember, the door is always open and the kettle is always on.

Rossington Parish Council - FEBRUARY 2014 I hope everyone had a good Christmas and a happy New Year. This month was quiet, at least in terms of Parish Council meetings with just the one meeting to report on! We did have two events though; the Christmas Fayre and the Panto. But I thought, this month, I would start with a reminder of what we did for the village last year: The Parish Council started with the Easter Eggstravaganza, held at Brodsworth Way Pavilion and grounds, it was a cold day, 4 degrees, but a runaway success with over 400 people attending and fun was had by all those that attended. Then a month later we had the Vintage Vehicle and Steam Show and had perfect weather. The turn-out of exhibitors and attendees was far above expectations; unfortunately the organisers have decided to hold this event elsewhere this year although the Parish Council did offer to fund it again as we have for the last two years. We then put on the Medieval Festival and this, unfortunately, was hit by bad weather. After a reasonably good Saturday we had a mini cyclone and torrential rain at 4.30am in the night that caused a lot of damage and as a result Sunday was not good. The re-enactors did their bit, but the stall holders had had their goods damaged and went home and intermittent rain didn’t help. But overall we were about on budget. Then another mishap, the headline band for Saturday night pulled out 8 days before the music festival and we had to cancel. Well back to another success; the Village BBQ and Fun Day held at Brodsworth Way Pavilion and grounds. Over 700 attended and we, Bill Reynolds and myself, cooked and served over 200 burgers and over 200 sausages; Chefs – we should have been on the television. We had the Rovers coaches organising football, we had a small 8 8
ROSSINGTON TODAY
fair, bouncy castles, an assault course, and blow-up slide then a climbing wall and a laser quest all for free (well not the sausages). The Beer Festival was another resounding success with 32 beers on and some good bands. We had 3000 people turn up for the Bonfire and fireworks display, the Parish Council pays for the fireworks and the entertainment as well as providing the gate staff etc. we have to thank DMBC who built the bonfire and controlled it. Next came the two events unreported throughout the year; the Xmas Fayre and the Pantomime. Yet again we were hit by bad weather, as it rained, not as hard as last year, but it affected the event although those that did come thoroughly enjoyed it Santa (the ghost of Steve Merriman is still upon us) and his two elves managed to give away 250 or so selection boxes. We will be looking again at the planning of this event. The pantomime was also good, we learnt that we need to make it easier to buy tickets. The show was great and Act One Pantos were brilliant. On top of that The Parish Council pays for the flowers around the village and the Christmas decorations (new and much better this year). We do things in the background also such as funding the Good Neighbours meals on wheels service, the allotments, the market toilets, the Memorial Hall, Doncaster Rovers Kickz (ASB reduction scheme) and all the grants we give to various societies. Next year we hope to the above and help keep the swimming pool open to the public, help keep the youth club going and help start up a credit union. The Parish Council does a lot for the village and it is hard at time to find the energy between us to keep things going. At the Parish Council meeting for December we had the chief exec of the Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust and
his assistant give a presentation about the Leisure centre. This was our second meeting and proved to be productive. The budget for 2014 – 2015 was passed with a result of a 22.3p per week (band ‘d’ property) increase. This was to pay for the Leisure Centre, Youth Club, Credit Union and Doncaster Rovers Kickz programme as well as keep other things going. We also agreed to set on an assistant to the Parish Clerk. We also accepted the resignation of Barry Johnson, a stalwart on the Council due to work and holiday commitments.

Rossington history group For the past nine months Rossington History Group, led by two new members, has been researching possible sites of archaeological interest around the village. Working with Doncaster Museum and the South Yorkshire Archaeological Service the group have identified a number of sites that more than likely pre date the establishment of the Roman settlement in Doncaster. As the information that had come to light was so exciting the History Group decided to form a specialist sub group that would be able to concentrate its efforts in this particular part of history of Rossington and the surrounding area. This sub group, The Rossington Archaeological Field Team (R.A.F.T.), decided to prepare an application bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund organisation and the structure of the bid has developed in a way that will eventually involve the wider community, voluntary groups, schools and individuals in what is likely to be a three year project. These are just a few of the items already found around the Rossington area and are now on display in Doncaster Museum. R.A.F.T has evidence that there is a lot more waiting to be discovered.

Garden View
By February Christmas can seem like a distant memory: toys and games which were desired for months beforehand, are now no longer new. I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering how the excitement of a new toy soon faded, but for me the big box in which it was wrapped provided entertainment for a much greater length of time because it could be turned into a car, a bus, a den or a robot. Recently I was asked to apply this theory when designing a family garden: a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a big blue climbing frame; a bright red slide, or a plastic swing. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can ‘accidentally’ find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds. Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud (surely you must have made mud pies or sloppy dosh when you were a child – for those who didn’t its mud and water mixed in a bucket or bowl with a stick then left to harden in the sun). Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. I 18 18

A place to explore & create love to see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, but has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; paths to race bikes on; washing line poles to climb, and a small bridge to cross when escaping from trolls…the usual thing! Parents also often ask about child-friendly plants, and it’s a tricky question to provide a quick answer for. There are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly to very toxic, but statistically (research shows) that the number of deaths is tiny. The vast majority taste so disgusting that your child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!). Foxgloves, fungi and Delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include Daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of Rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful,
but we still grow them in schools. I think garden education at a young age is the key, and given most under 3’s won’t be outside alone in the garden it shouldn’t be a problem … anyway, they’ll be too busy playing to eat the plants!. T
Until next time, happy gardening ,

Wheelers Cycling Club –
FEBRUARY NEWS This years Cyclo X-mas event held at Rossington Welfare as part of the Lincolnshire Cyclo Cross League on the Sunday before Xmas was another successful event for the club. A total of 109 riders took part in the three race programme in what were damp but happily much milder conditions than previous recent editions of the annual event that took in a lengthy loop of the wooded area on each lap of the race. The conditions may have been different to previous years but the result wasn’t as Rossington professional Graham Briggs won the main event (for I think the third time in five years) before jetting off to Australia and some good finishes in the top 10 of the Bay Crit Series. Another familiar face – Richard Baldwin came home in seventh in the main race also. Special thanks to the Welfare for generous use of the club facilities on the day…and clearing up the mud!

August, the JE James TT League will have events within range roughly every other week and the TLI Road Race League will be in situ also late April to late August so there’s plenty of racing out there for anyone that’s done the training and gets bitten by the bug! As this is the February issue I’ll just slip in a further reminder that the Club Annual Presentation Night is Friday 7th March at The Welfare as by next issue it will be upon us. Ticket enquiries can be made via the committee with contact via the website: www.rossingtonwheelers. co.uk or via facebook and twitter under the club name, or ask Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. Club Runs are currently tip toeing through the frost and ice but details of all planned activities are also available via the above forums as per usual.

Life-savers wanted in Tickhill & Rossington Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust is appealing to community minded locals in Tickhill & Rossington to become life-saving Community First Responders. Recruits could are required to join existing schemes in the area’s which provide immediate medical care to members of the community in the vital minutes before an ambulance arrives.
TRAINED
Community First Responders are trained in basic life-support, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and oxygen therapy. They are equipped with a kit which includes oxygen and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help patients in a medical emergency such as a heart attack, collapse or breathing difficulties. Warren Bostock, Community Defibrillation Trainer at Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “We know that
Rossington Ex-Servicemen’s
in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical and if effective treatment can be performed within those minutes, lives can be saved and disability reduced.
REWARDING “Being part of this initiative can be extremely rewarding and I would encourage anyone who may be interested in helping their local community to take on the role.” Over 50 Community First Responder schemes currently operate across South Yorkshire and volunteers should be prepared to offer at least 4 hours a week to be on call from home. Full training is given to successful applicants who must be over the age of 18, physically fit and hold a full driving licence (which they have held for at least 12 months with no more than 3 penalty points). Yorkshire Ambulance Service will also run Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks on candidates.
