“Spring is the time of plans and projects.” ~ Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

A ‘Spring’ quote seemed appropriate this month, although at the time of writing the weather is anything but Spring like! Spring is a time of new life and new beginnings and a time when many of us look at home improvements, or make a start on garden projects. This month’s magazine is full or businesses and tradespeople who can help you with these projects. Whether it be a building project, a patio, new carpets, a greener lawn or a clean oven, whatever your springtime project there is sure to be someone featured who can help you. Don’t forget to tell them you found them in Today Publications when you contact them!

For all your building needs

The next issue will be delivered from 27th April. This issue will include a ‘Good Food & Drink Section’ Anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Friday 12th April.

Be it a business meeting, impressing VIP guests, a day at the races or the best day of your life, the team at Domino Transfer will make your occasion special from start to finish.

Although the company has only recently launched, the people behind it are far from new to the business. Their expertise gained over the years in providing transportation for music tours and corporate events is unparalleled and owner ‘Chef’ Morgan has combined his knowledge and experience working within this industry along with his will to provide perfection, to form a company that’s breaking the mould. It’s easy to see how the company lives up to its motto. ‘Semper Ignitum’ translates as ‘always refined’ and this runs deep from the vehicles to the chauffeurs to how clients are made to feel throughout. You’ll be transported safely and stylishly to any destination locally or nationally giving you time to relax in

a comfortable environment. Travelling for business? Use the discreet space where you can work or rest safe in the knowledge that your conversations are strictly confidential. Travelling for fun? It’s Family Time Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. I HOPE by this time this arrives to you, warmer temperatures would have arrived. I am ready to turn off the heat!

For the last 6 months, we have been re-doing our kitchen, shifting a downstairs bathroom and all the other bits and pieces that go along with it. I have tried to do as much of it myself as I can. I don’t know if you have ever experienced mess beyond belief and dust in places you didn’t even know you had … but we now have. But oh, when the kitchen units went in and when the paint got on the wall, boy was it nice! Every thing now is so clean, new and sparkling. All the pots are orderly and stacked ... well, sort of. Outside in our back garden is the not-so-nice, rather old and broken kitchen that was installed 15 years ago. I know what is going to happen. The new cupboards are going to get dirty … the worktop a nick and the vinyl floor a scuff. To keep it going is going to take regular maintenance. Families and relationships are very much like that. We have just had

ROSSINGTON TODAY

Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Father’s Day is just round the corner. Big days are good but they are not an end all. It is so easy to take my wife and children for granted. After nearly 25 years of marriage, the theme of two ships passing in the night could be OUR theme. Are you doing anything for some family maintenance? It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. It could be as simple as having a “No TV” night, putting the kettle on and having a chat. How about trying something with your child you haven’t before … ice skating,

laser tag. If you will make “maintenance” part of your regular vocabulary, I think you will find less break downs.

If you would like to pop in for a cuppa, the door is always open.

A tasty bite . . .

Crumbs Family Bakery & Sandwich Shop on King Avenue, Rossington has been open for over eight years. It is run only by family members, with Mark being the master baker as well as the head of the family, he starts work at 2am every morning to bake the fresh delicacies such as the cakes, quiches, t-cakes, cream cakes, bread and bread cakes.

His wife, Julie, manages the shop and prepares all of the food for sandwiches, salad boxes, meals on wheels, etc. Daughter number one, Holly, works part time as a shop assistant and daughter number two, Katie, works on Saturdays to help out with the cleaning to make sure the building is kept to a high hygiene standard. All of the food is to a high standard, they buy the best quality meat, vegetables, salad, etc. They like to present food to people that they would like to be presented with themselves and wouldn’t expect anything else.

Crumbs is a very friendly environment with all customers, old and new, made to feel welcome. Due to requests from customers, Crumbs have recently started doing meals on wheels for OAP’s. These meals consist of a hot dinner and either a pudding with custard or a cream cake. All food is cooked to a high standard. They do not fry, they either steam, boil or dry roast all of the food. Most of the meals work out at £4.95 per day. However, the more people ordering meals, the more the price will be lowered. Meals should be ordered before 9:30am on the day the meal is required or if possible, the day before. All dinners are delivered to the door, free of charge, by Mark personally, between 12 noon and 1pm, depending on how many meals are being delivered. If you are interested in having a look at their monthly menu, please feel free to call in the shop or call 01302 868700 and Mark would be more than happy to drop you one off. T

Rossington Parish Council - April 2013 Well it’s nearly Easter and our Easter Eggstravaganza, being held on 31st March, is an Easter fancy dress for all ages and an egg hunt for the under 11’s. There will be a free fairground rides and bouncy castles and other attractions including a BBQ. Tea Coffee and children’s drinks will also be available. This is financed and manned by the Parish Council and assisted by DMBC Area Officers. George Sheldon/Parish Council event the Rossington Vintage Vehicle and Steam Show is all set for June 1st and 2nd, 10.00am to 4.00pm, it will be a great day, bigger and better than ever. Well over 100 exhibits so far and more to come. Come to the Welfare for an interesting and fun day out. There will be the following attractions: Traction Engines, Vintage Tractors, Motorcycles, Miniature Steam Engines, Stationery Engines, Classic and Vintage Cars, Model Displays, Craft and Trade Stalls, Traditional Fairground Amusements, Beer Tent, Food Stalls and Many Others. The timetable is settled for the Medieval Festival on July 29th and 28th, 11.00am to 6.30pm (Sat) and 6.00pm (Sun). It will be a fun packed two days of non-stop entertainment and displays by up to 400 re-enactors; from Viking to 100 year war knights in armour. There will be have a go archery, Tudor dancing & cookery lessons there will be feats of arms and demonstrations and there will be, on Saturday, The battle of Rossington at 6.10pm. The Music festival that runs from 12th to 18th August is currently being organised with (hopefully) a couple of headline acts to finish off on each day. More discussion next month about this as it is an on-going, ever changing kaleidoscope of music. DMBC are helping to promote our events and I hope that as many as possible from Rossington turn up to 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY

each event. Most of the Music Festival will be free. The Strategy committee met and the main discussion point was the Allotments. It was decided that there would be three visits by the committee each year, mid-April, Late June and at the end of September. This was to ensure all is OK and to give an opportunity for the Allotment holders to speak to the committee. It was also agreed that there would be and agenda item ‘Allotment Update’ at each meeting. The status of the Allotment was discussed and it was decided that the Chairman would pursue this within DMBC. This I did and, touch wood, I am hopeful of a successful conclusion. The Triple ‘A’ Regeneration committee met and it was decided that the various house builders interested in Rossington would be invited to a meeting to consult on our plans for Rossington. Carol Beaumont and John Gibson volunteered to consult with retail outlets and industry. It was also agreed that the airport Hesley Hall and HeliosSlough would also be consulted. The Pantomime has been booked for Christmas, two shows matinée and an evening show. Fuse Fireworks have offered a three year deal that saves us money and gets us a better show. The Projects committee recommended to the Strategy committee that a steel container be purchased to store equipment. A further Triple ‘A’ meeting took place and no movement on any item was reported work will have to be done a) to correct our own delays and b) to correct the reported lack of response from DMBC. These have now been corrected.

Have a Good Easter, support us if you can at the Easter Eggstravaganza.

A right to reply I was sad to see in the last edition of your otherwise excellent magazine a piece of electioneering by Labour Councillor Richard CooperHolmes. While I’m not going to insult the Rossington readers by doing more of same, this isn’t the place, I did want to take a few moments to set the record straight.

Councillor Cooper-Holmes said I had done nothing for Doncaster. Well anyone can recognise that having council tax frozen for a record third year in a row, a zero tolerance approach to crime resulting in reductions of up to 24% and anti-social behaviour down by 35%, and having managed enforced government cuts of £92m while making sure it’s waste

12 ROSSINGTON TODAY

and bureaucracy that’s cut and that essential services are protected is far from nothing. All of this and much more, including major investment projects (like FARRRS, which will commence soon). Councillor Cooper-Holmes also seems to have some problems with the new council offices (as do I) but he neglected to point out that it was the previous labour mayor who committed us to the expensive project in the first place. And the budget was not changed thanks to labour. They were instead forced to shambolically publish their recommendations in the press, because they feared all their amendments would be unnecessary. It was also said that I have made ‘us’ look a laughing stock. Well I am saddened again that this type of personal attack still goes on in

Doncaster and it’s no wonder people are turned off by politics. People want less politics and more common sense; they want less mud-slinging and more accountability. Over 35 years Labour dragged Doncaster’s name and reputation through the mud. Our town was mired in corruption at worst and incompetence at best. Over the last four years, since I became mayor, we have started putting that right.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster T

CAN YOU DIG IT? Soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it? One of the most common ‘moans’ I get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. Sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now I realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. Like all things in life, there are extremes. I (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d recommend working with what you already have. I’ve only 14 ROSSINGTON TODAY

ever come across one soil type which I didn’t think possible to improve due to its shallow nature, so we just added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. If you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. It’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil pH. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. If you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs

of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house! T

Until next time, happy gardening,

Rossington Main

The 1st team gained their first win of the year at the 6th attempt with an excellent 4-3 away win at Grimsby Borough, but sadly we find ourselves in the relegation zone as this victory was sandwiched between 4 League defeats. 3 of these losses were at home where we are struggling to match last season’s form. With just 9 League matches remaining we must aim for at least 3 or 4 wins to secure relative safety for this season! The expected excitement of the 2 County Cup matches in early March was somewhat muted, the 1st team’s quarter-final tie versus Staveley was twice postponed by the weather and the 2nd team’s semi-final opponents proved too experienced and strong for our young Reserve side. Kirkburton finally winning 3-1 on a wet and difficult pitch, but our young side gaining much credit for a spirited 2nd half and much satisfaction from reaching this stage of the Competition. The postponed 1st team Cup tie is re-scheduled for Tuesday March 19th.

The 2nd team have six of their final 7 League games at home from April 1st onwards. On top of this we are hosting the Doncaster Boys U.16s semi-finals and final on Sunday 21st, Sunday 28th April and Wed. May 8th respectively. On Friday May 10th Oxford Street hosts the Doncaster F.A. Challenge Cup Final. The U.17 side are finishing their season in style with 2 consecutive victories over Adwick and Branton

in recent weeks, and several of their squad are likely to progress to Senior football next year, hopefully with our 2nd team. Please try and lend your support to all teams in the final weeks of the season. Tea-bar open for all home fixtures before, during and after the match. THANK YOU. T

Rossington MWBC Composing this article in midMarch with snow falling it hardly seems likely that our bowling greens open in just over 2 weeks’ time. Good Friday is the official opening date and no doubt if the weather improves we shall see our members practising and checking the running of the greens. At a time when Clubs are seeing a decline in player membership I am pleased to report that our numbers have slightly increased with 4 new playing members registered for the 26 ROSSINGTON TODAY

start of the 2013 season. However with only 10% of our Club’s playing membership under pensionable age it is probably very misleading to state that “bowls is no longer an old man’s game” but there are youngsters playing in the Doncaster Leagues and we ARE desperate to encourage younger people into our Club. Our more senior members have encouraged the Management Committee to operate slightly larger divisions for the Over 60s Leagues, resulting in more matches and an earlier start to the season. The Over 60s Singles and Doubles matches start on

Monday and Wednesday afternoons commencing w/c April 8th. Tuesday evening Doubles, Thursday evening Midweek League and the Saturday League, will all be in full flow by May. New bowlers will be made welcome so please make your way down to the Welfare and make enquiries. It is a relatively cheap sport for beginners and we welcome all ages. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the best times to catch members on the greens, alternatively you can call me on 867221. T

Wheelers club update

Well I hoped to be sat here now with about a week to go until the clocks spring forward feeling the warmth in the air....nothing could be further from the truth as ice patches and frost are still mainstays of the daily commute and evening pleasure rides would still seem to be months away! Undeterred by the arctic March temperatures however the clubs membership of keen riders has been out in bigger numbers than ever before, with Sunday mornings of less than 20 riders almost a thing of the past. Some tough rides have already been ridden as riders strive for fitness and to get miles into their legs before the first feature ride of the year on Good Friday – a 120 mile jaunt to Fridaythorpe in the wolds. This is then quickly followed on Easter Sunday with the new ‘Ronde Van Rossington’ – a tough, hilly ride ridden alongside fellow Rossington based cycling club ‘Sugarcane Velo Club’ to coincide with top Belgian race ‘The Tour of Flanders’. Also penned in the club-run list in April is a first trip of 2013 across the Humber Bridge, a straight up 100 mile ride that one. Many of the clubs keen competitive members have been training solidly through the winter months and a record high 14 members entered the opening TT event in the 2013 J E James League, a 25 mile 2 up TT around Hatfield Woodhouse, many PB’s were clocked and performances were encouraging – a good sign for events to come hopefully... Other riders have entered individual events including current club champion Gary ‘The Turbine’ Irvine who has been keen to test his early form. The clubs own competition ‘The

AAD Gas Handicap TT League’ is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday 10/04/13 with sign on at 6.15pm at Ancient Lane junction in Hatfield Woodhouse. The presence of temporary traffic lights on our validated course could cause the early rounds to be reduced from the standard 10 mile trip though unfortunately, we will see in the run up to the events? The full club summer program including evening rides will be in full swing in May and so next month I will detail fully where you should be and at what time if you want to ride with the Wheelers. Also upcoming in May is the club’s annual trip to the Dales which is Fri – Mon across Spring Bank Holiday weekend which is set to be nothing short of brutal this year with an ascent of the infamous ‘Park Rash’ climb and its 25% gradients appearing 80 miles into the Saturday leg buster ride – bring it on!

All the usual sources of information have club information available:www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk , facebook - ‘Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club’ or twitter - ‘@ rossowheelers’ or pop in to see club chairman Les and the new noticeboard inside Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. Rossington Councillor’s update - April 2013 Another month, another cold, this times it’s more serious, man flu at least! Anyway, the Council rolls on in its’ own inimitable manner, like an unstoppable juggernaut, the timetable of events has to be done in a strict way. So this month it was the Council Tax setting. 0% rise on basic Council tax again. Although this, on the surface looks good for the residents of Doncaster, but in reality it is just storing up severe problems for the future.

speak to her needs to contact myself or Barry Johnson, we will try to arrange a meeting. Ros will change things for the better she will do her best to minimise the cuts that are being forced on us. If it were not for Ros Jones and the Labour Budget group the cuts would be severe especially to the elderly and disabled. Ros Jones had Ed Miliband to chair a public Q&A session in Bentley; in Rossington she does one better (?) and will have me! I hope it will be well attended. I found out too late for last month’s edition and it will be over by the time this edition goes out, sorry. We had our final meeting on youth unemployment and came up with some ways to help. The most obvious was to find out what jobs there were and train people for those jobs. We actually had 7 others so they weren’t all too obvious. We also met to discuss housing and finance, from both the buyer and the seller’s point of view. Not surprisingly the banks said it wasn’t their fault. However, the banks were said to be the problem by both buyers and sellers. The builders between them have enough planning permissions in place to build enough houses to fulfil our target for years and years and did say that the banks were being difficult when they asked for loans. And the buyers, everyone said that it was

difficult to get mortgages. I’ve been nagging our highways department about the state of Queen Mary’s Road; the promised that it would be resurfaced this year, and they have not done it! I am also annoyed that the speed indicator sign for Littleworth Lane has not yet been erected. I shall keep nagging. 31st March is the Easter Eggstravaganza, an Easter fancy dress for all ages and an egg hunt for the under 11’s. There will be a free fairground rides and bouncy castles and other attractions including a BBQ. Tea Coffee and children’s drinks will also be available. This is financed by the Parish Council and assisted by DMBC Area Officers.

year we have been very successful and we’ve be able to raffle 50 eggs, a ‘cracking’ result! A big thank you to all who helped sell or purchase tickets. Looking ahead we are planning to run a coconut shy at The Oak public house on the day of the Scarecrow festival. Please come along and join in the fun. T

I don’t want to get to the point where we can’t afford to sweep the streets or cut the grass or even, look after our elderly. The Government is forcing Councils to make cuts and wiping its hands of any blame. They are trying to pass the blame for the cuts and reduction in services onto the Councils, who in general do a good job. There have been hundreds of redundancies caused by they unnecessary and unduly harsh cuts, cuts that are too deep and too fast with nothing done to make the economy grow. Growth is only way to recover from the international banking crisis, cuts alone cannot fix our economy; you have to have growth to build the tax base and encourage spending. Ros Jones our Labour Party Candidate has been in Rossington 5 or 6 times now and will be back. Anyone wishing to

Good Ofsted rating Local Drug for Tornedale and Alchol Support Infant School Rossington Tornedale Infant School is glowing with pride at the recent feedback from Ofsted.

Ofsted inspectors summed up their feedback to staff by saying “There is a genuine commitment to making the school outstanding, which is apparent in the staff’s constant efforts to improve.” The inspectors also acknowledged the school’s work to successfully improve attendance since its last Ofsted inspection. They recognised that Tornedale work hard to be very inclusive, and that staff work hard to ensure that different groups of pupils in school integrate well together. They also acknowledged changes in the effectiveness of the Governing body, and felt it was important now to establish those improvements. As well as making a judgement on the quality of teaching, Ofsted inspectors observed the behaviour of the children in lessons, outside, and in the hall for assembly and lunch. They also chatted to the children about behaviour in the school. They reported that the children’s behaviour was good and sometimes impeccable. The

inspectors saw that teachers created a positive climate for learning, and recognised that teachers had high expectations of the children and that all groups of children made good progress. Ofsted described Tornedale School as ‘a happy community in which the pupils thrive because of the committed work of the head teacher and the staff.’ Tornedale’s next challenge is to develop more outstanding teaching, and ensure there is support and guidance for this. Headteacher Tracey Wild said: “We are a good school that aspires to be outstanding and the Ofsted team recognised this. We encourage children to always work hard to achieve the best they can, and that is exactly what inspectors found on their visit. They recognised that children at Tornedale want to learn and happily take part.” Councillor Eric Tatton-Kelly, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Well done to staff, children, parents and governors at Tornedale for this ‘Good’ Ofsted rating. This is a fantastic achievement for all involved.” T
