@tickhillorg
welcome TO THE DECEMBER EDITION OF ROSSINGTON TODAY. Another year has flown past and here I am again putting together the Christmas editions! Thank you for all your comments about the new design of the magazine, in general these were all incredibly positive and we will continue to make on-going improvements, keeping your feedback in mind. This month’s issue contains lots of details of Christmas events, fairs and concerts. I hope you will enjoy supporting them this festive season. The January issue will be delivered to you over the New Year period. It does however have to be with all of the distributors before Christmas, and as I am hoping to leave deliveries to Santa on Christmas Eve I have needed to set the deadline for submissions particularly early! Please ensure that anything you would like to be included is with me by Friday 7th December. While it does seem incredibly early (i am writing this mid-November) i would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas.
Best wishes, Paula x

Merry Christmas from
CAN YOU BELIEVE it’s December?
it just seemed yesterday that my 8 year old started Y4. But now we are at the end of the first term and looking 2013 square in the eye. i have had enough birthdays to know that Christmas for many, is not a happy time. it could be current issues at home, something that happened recently or many years ago. many of us have every justification to wish the entire season to just go away. however, i would like to challenge you to choose to think differently this year. the reason is wrapped up in a simple four letter word … hoPe. Christmas is a time for renewed hope. Christmas conjures up images of a sweet baby in a manger, surrounded by animals and a star. though all that is true, it is far more than that. For thousands of years, people had been looking for the “special, anointed one” to come. throughout world history, generations came and went without seeing this promise come true … until that fateful year in which the signs appeared in the heavens that prompted the magi (wise men) to make the journey to Bethlehem. (As a bit of trivia, tradition says 3. We don’t really know. We just know there were 3 gifts.) it was at that time, that hope was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus who was
the Christ (anointed one). it was a time of renewed hope. there was an old man in the temple at the time when Christ was taken to be circumcised as was the Jewish custom. God had given him a promise that he would not die until he had see for his own eyes ... the Christ (luke 2). As Joseph and mary brought the baby Jesus, God prompted simeon that this was the Christ … hope fulfilled. Jesus was to live and die according to God’s plan to make forgiveness of sins possible … hope fulfilled. it is because of hope that this Christmas could be different. maybe because of this hope, an offer of forgiveness to that person who hurt you could be on your Christmas list. What about the child or parent you vowed SAFE & never to speak to again? SECURE i saw a bumper sticker once … “Wise men still seek with for Christ”. Why not make this Christmas a “Christ” filled Cameras Christmas. hope is a great thing! As always, thanks for reading and if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cuppa, the door is always open. Rossington Parish Council - December 2012 THIS MONTH HAS been very quiet, with only two meetings to report. however, we did have a rather spectacular bonfire and firework show. And even more shocking and spectacular was the resignation of steve merriman our Parish Clerk! steve has been our Parish Clerk for 13 years and has recently, just about become trained! We will miss him, he has been a star;but he wants to fulfil some dreams and i can’t fault him for that. i could tell you one or two, but it would embarrass him. i would have liked him to change his mind; he is young, only 63, but he thwarted my plans by advertising for his successor immediately. i and my fellow Councillors wish him well in the future and we will see him again as he has retained his position in Good Neighbours, so we will be having him driving the delivery van as usual. Good Parish Clerks are hard to find and i hope our next one will be as vigorous and helpful as steve. the bonfire, even with a small charge, attracted 3,000 people with another 500 or so outside the gates watching over the fence. the fireworks were truly impressive, much, much better than last year, but there again they were quite a lot more expensive! thanks to steve thomas, our Area manager, and his team, they built the most impressive bonfire, huge is not enough to describe it; it burned for days and was so hot even late on when most people had gone. thank you to the usual helpers: George sheldon, steve merriman, Bill reynolds and my wife Janet. thanks to the Police PCso’s who helped us at a difficult moment, and thanks to the Welfare for having us. let’s see what we can do next year. the remembrance Day parade and service was yet again well attended. i am proud of the numbers that turned out; it shows a village spirit and a thoughtfulness that is truly 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY

OUR OWN SUCCESS in the sheffield senior Cup which saw a tremendous away win at Parkgate F.C. on Nov. 6th also condemns us to a further midweek game early December in the final 8 of this competition- draw not yet made. With 6 further league games due to be played in December we will have played a total of 35 games in the opening 5 months of the season and then in the 2nd half of this campaign we will have just 15 games in 4 months. should there be no adverse weather this winter to warrant cancellations, we will have no midweek games whatsoever from January through to the end of April and also a few vacant saturdays! since our last bulletin the 1st team have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 3 with both victories coming courtesy of a last minute winning goal. Nathan Fraser popped up with a 90th minute winner at Yorkshire Amateur and, reduced to 10 men for over an hour against higher league opposition in the senior Cup, Niall Doyle sealed a remarkable recovery with virtually the last kick at Parkgate. in between two below par performances saw us lose at Pontefract and hallam, and a 1-1 home draw with neighbours Askern villa was followed by a narrow home defeat to Athersley rec. where a good second half display saw us compete with the current league leaders. Despite gaining success in Cup matches the 2nd team have fallen away slightly in the league. A 3-2 away victory at holmbridge in the sheffield Association Cup has earned a home tie with Caribbean sports in the next round, and they also progressed in the Premier Division Cup with a 4-2 away win at Carcroft. sadly in the league two narrow 2-1 defeats versus hemsworth and Bramley has seen them relinquish 2nd spot, the league situation being compounded by also having 6 points deducted - our 6-2 success at mexborough being expunged as they have now withdrawn from the league and in our early season 3-1 win at s. 20 ROSSINGTON TODAY

elmsall, un-be known to us we fielded a dual-registered player. the U.17 side are unbeaten in their last 3 matches and have also progressed in their league Cup competition. on the sponsorship front we are extremely grateful for the donation received from rossington labour Club, a follow-up to the recent Charity match held at our ground, and they have also promised to sponsor a home game in the New Year. that charity game realised an exceptional crowd of over 200 at oxford street on a late september saturday evening and possibly all were residents of rossington, but sadly attendances at our matches this season have dwindled. it could be our admission charges or possibly our team’s form this season, but the last home game versus league

leaders Athersley rec. brought an attendance of 81. A good turn-out by our league’s standards but i guarantee that possibly 75% of these had travelled from Barnsley to the game. At our local derby game versus Askern recently attendance was just 53. it baffles me why the non-league game in the Doncaster area is not as well-attended. our existence as a Club these days is down to our income on match days, and this at the bar rather than at the turnstile, and so a plea to try and tempt a few more down to the ground. hope to see some new faces in the lead-up to Christmas and to all our regular visitors, sincere best wishes for the festive period from all at rossington main.

Putting right earlier SEASON WRONGS
THIS MONTH HAS seen rossington hornets put right the early season wrongs and start to play some constructive and aggressive rugby. the hornets travelled to Wensleydale in the cup aiming for a first competitive victory of the season. After a slow start during which the hornets conceded an early try the pack started to take the game by the scruff of the neck and set a platform for the backs to run some incisive lines against the home defence. this powerful running combined with the grit and
determination of the forwards enabled the hornets to consistently rumble up the pitch and threaten the home try line. For all their efforts and endeavour however the first half did not produce a try that the display deserved, with rossington trailing by two tries at half time. rossington started the second half as they finished the first attacking the opposition line and after good work by the forwards, particularly
Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club THE FINAL COMPETITIVE
offering of the Wheelers road season saw 18 keen competitors head to Clifton hill at the back of Crookhill GC for the annual awarding of the les hudson trophy in the Club hill Climb event, this was probably a record turn-out for the event and the records didn’t stop there either as last year’s winner shaun randall powered his way gracefully up to the summit in a new record of 2 mins 16 secs to retain the trophy! Unlucky runner-up at 2.33 was again Colin taylor with Club secretary Paul Wormald rewarded for his efforts on 2.43 – a time that may have won the 2011 edition? it’s not traditional to name 4th place but as its the writer we’ll make an exception – a further second back on 2.44! Also good to see a pair of juniors in stephen Patterson and Callum Jones slugging it out up the hill! A couple of weeks earlier the Club champion had cut his teeth in the sheffrec CC monsal hill Climb and marked his debut in the event with a midfield placing – after a 45 mile warm up riding to the event! Fellow rossington riders tom taylor and michael Brammall of sugarcane
velo also competed in the event and with some success as michael won the prestigious vets (40+) category in a time of 1.40, within 20 secs of a field that included the top 6 in the National hill climb Championships. Winter for the Wheelers sees us host our biggest event – the traditional rossington Cyclo X-mas Cyclo Cross event on the Welfare and this is set for sunday 23/12/12 this year with junior events kicking off around 10.00am and the main event around noon – but check this nearer the date for confirmation. A big field will be present in the lincolnshire league event and some big names and specialists in amongst the more local riders. Come along and lend your support, there’ll be some familiar faces on the start line! All other club news can be found via all the usual channels with www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk our official homepage. Keep an eye out for rides departing at 9.30am in December and keep an eye out for ice also!

[ Andy Brooks, it was left to captain Billy mcDowell to burst over from short range. After dominating for long periods it came as no surprise when scrum-half Joe Dodd sniped a hole in the defence to score under the posts leaving a simple conversion for Kai Wheatley to take the hornets into the lead. Coach Dean White was rightfully proud of his side’s performance and hopes that it is the first of many victories this season. With no league fixtures in the remainder of the month rossington had to settle for friendly games away at sheffield medics and thorne against opponents in higher leagues. these well contested games gave rossington added confidence to play there next cup match against Airborough from leeds in the second round. Airborough currently reside mid table in Yorkshire 3, two leagues above the hornets, but got more than they bargained for when visiting the welfare ground. A spirited team performance from rossington caused the visitors problems especially in the scrum, and although Airborough ran out as winners 38-17 the hornets could be proud of their 3 tries scored by Arron “chezney” mcmahon, Kai Wheatley and rob Bostock. A special mention should go to Fly-half marcus Anderson who managed his first full game in living memory converting the final try from out wide to boot. hopefully the hornets can build on these performances and start to dominate against the teams in their own league. The Hornets next game is at home on 8th December against stocksbridge. Please feel free to come and show your support for your local team from 2.15pm K.O. You can find further information on the Hornets including fixtures, results, match reports and training details at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/ rossingtonhornets. ROSSINGTON TODAY 21

Rossington Councillor’s update - December 2012 I HAVE PUT my hat in the ring to
be the labour Party Candidate for mayor, and by the time this article comes out i shall know if i am short listed. i think that i am one of the stronger candidates, but you never know and to be truthful i am rather philosophical about it all. if i get short listed, great, but if i don’t i will support whoever is finally selected fully. the closing date for the final ballot of labour Party members is the 10th December and the count is on the same date. then the campaign can be planned and started. We have discussed a new environmental strategy and this can only benefit everyone. it is a starting point and i would welcome any comments when it is published. i am chair of the sub-committee that scrutinised and modified the draft strategy and would like to think that we have done a reasonably good job. We as councillors have worked on the tenancy strategy, and this was not altogether to our approval. some of the policies handed down by the Government on short term tenancies were not good and were rejected as unfair. We expect some positive movement between our meeting and the Cabinet decision. the regeneration and environment scrutiny Panel met to review our suggestions made last year on how to improve opportunity Centres and to discuss opportunity Centres and their future. it was a remarkable meeting, not only for the amazing number of officers attending (seven) but the seniority (one Director, two Assistant Directors, two heads of service and two the next grade down), but also for the attendance of the mayor and the Cabinet member responsible, Cynthia ransom. the discussion revolved around unspent money allocated in last years’ budget and whether this was a deliberate act and about the under-performance

of some of the centres. rossington is the best of them all by miles, but some, especially in libraries with no dedicated staff, were not good at all. the meeting was rather intense and hopefully the appalling situation will soon be sorted. opportunity centres work very well when properly staffed and when the staff are thoroughly trained and motivated. the recycoal’s archaeological dig is amazing; they have excavated 8 acres of land and have found loads of iron Age finds and is one of the best digs in the north of england. they have found a complete iron Age farmstead and even some Bronze Age bits and pieces. this is going to be the prize exhibit at the south Yorkshire Archaeology Day to be held on 24th November in sheffield. By the time you read this i will have been to see the dig and try to get some photographs to show you all. things are happening at meadow Court, it looks like there will be some building works starting there soon. i hope that this will make up for loosing meadow Court’s facilities. Flowers are still on my mind, even with winter approaching, the planned planters that i have said would be purchased could be bought, but not filled with flowers from the same pot of money according to the rules applying to the section 106 moneys, this has, through some good work by our Area manager steve thomas, has now been sorted. this should result in 20 planters being strategically placed around the village. A ‘Community health seminar’ was held for Councillors at the mansion house and it was really interesting and pertinent. it showed that rossington did have areas with
deprivation and other problems and that some of rossington was wealthy and this skewed the figure as a whole. We need to work on the poor areas to bring them up to the other areas.
Have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year & I am sure that Santa will be around to see you all.
