@tickhillorg
welcome to the FEBRUARY 2013 edition of Rossington Today. “How do you spell ‘love’?” asked Piglet… ”You don’t spell it... you feel it.” answered Pooh. What a lovely quote! And so totally true. With Valentines Day coming up it got me thinking about love and what it actually means. Not just in the context of partnerships but also with people around us; our children and friends. It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s your thoughts and efforts that go a long way. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February, just have a go at extending some love to a person close to you. As Piglet says, you don’t even need to be able to spell it. The next issue will be delivered from 1st March, anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th February – Valentines Day!
Best wishes, Paula x

Valentines Day HELLO FROM CAUSE for a Cuppa!
i hope the start of the year has been a good one for you. have you set any goals and tried getting “smArt” with it (see last month’s Cause for a Cuppa)? February brings us valentine’s Day … chocolates, flowers, cards. i found a few interesting bits on the internet regarding valentine’s Day. Unfortunately the origin of valentine’s Day is unclear. there are several guesses but nothing definite. What is more interesting in my opinion, is the fact that men will spend twice as much as women. Also in Japan, women will buy chocolate and other gifts for their man on February 14. however men will do the same, not on February 14 but on march 14. But apart from the gift giving, valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love and what love really means. i had a mate in school when i was quite young. it seemed he was “in love” with someone new every week. talk about a trip back memory lane! over the last few months, my 9 year old has been telling me about who loves who in school. of course our children hear us talk about love and undoubtedly there is the influence from television, pop
culture and the media in general. my biggest concern would be that tv love is often not love at all. true love is much more the butterflies in your stomach. love is more a commitment and dedication than a feeling. Feelings are great but they come and go … don’t they? our feelings can be very deceptive, depending on the mood of the day and 1000 other things. i think one of the best gifts we can give our children on valentine’s Day is loving their mother or their father in the true sense. Difficult times come to all relationships. it is the strength and dedication to work through those difficult times that define the person and the relationship. is it easy? No … but it is one of best gifts you can give your family. Not only that, i have discovered that if we can work though the rough times, the feelings will return. have a very happy valentine’s Day!
if you would like to pop in for a cuppa, the door is always open.

rossington Parish Council - February 2013 DECEMBER WENT WELL and
Christmas and New Year were great successes and i hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. the Christmas Fayre was a very good, but the weather was appalling, it rained and rained and rained. But that didn’t put those that attended off; we seem to have bad weather almost every year perhaps we should have it in August. the fairground rides were well used and the indoor market went well, most had their face painted and the puppet show was appreciated by all, but the star of the show was santa who gave away a good number of selection Boxes. santa’s elf, Janet, magnificently directed traffic and kept the show on the road, so it is thanks to steve, Bill, George, Janet and Nuala and finally Carol who magically transported the selection Boxes from elfland to rossington. Between Christmas and New Year we had the rossington village Panto, ‘Follow the Yellow Brick road’, hopefully an annual event. the show was excellent, ‘oh no it wasn’t, oh yes it was’ everyone enjoyed it especially at the evening show when the Welfare concert room was packed. the morning show should have been in the afternoon, but we have learnt something the first time. the professional cast were superb and a typically pantomime performance was the result, with songs, jokes (some very, very bad), dancing, slapstick, water squirting and good audience participation. We have set the budget and precept after some difficulties, this stupid government made a complete pig’s ear of the calculations and had, in the end, to give a grant to DmBC to make up an ‘unforeseen shortfall’ in all the Parish Councils’ precept. Well we finally got it set and this year a rise in the precept for Band ‘D’ properties of 64p per year to £32.66. this precept money is enough to pay for all the events that we are putting on for the village next year. At the Parish Council meeting we also set the dates 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY
for these events: 31st march – easter Bunny fancy dress and Chocolate hunt; 1st & 2nd June – vintage vehicle and steam show; 29th June – village Fun Day; 27 & 28th July – medieval Festival; 12th to 18th August – music Festival; 14th september – village BBQ; 4th & 5th october – oktoberfest Beer Festival; 5th November – Bonfire and Firework Display; 13th December – Christmas Fayre; and 27th December – village Panto. We discussed the Parish Council Web site that i thought was old fashioned and difficult to use and it was decided that we should investigate bringing us up to the 21st century with a much more user friendly website, a twitter Account and a Facebook Page. it was suggested that we should pay someone to run the site etc. to ease the pressure on the Parish Clerk. it was decided to postpone filling the vacancies on the Planning and Governance Committees until we have a replacement for John Adam on the Parish Council, but due to the workload and timescale that the triple ‘A’ committee has to work under, malc Clark was reinstated and Gordon Dutton seconded onto the committee. this committee will be very busy over the next few months and a consultation document and hopefully a final Neighbourhood Plan will be produced for independent assessment and a referendum of the whole village. Unfortunately Bev harrison resigned for personal reasons, she will be sadly missed. We are now two short, but the vacant position left by John Adam resigning should be filled at the next meeting. the Projects Committee met to discuss and plan the Christmas Fayre and the Panto. the triple ‘A’ Committee met to discuss the Neighbourhood Plan, the consultation document and the
costs associated with this. the Planning Committee met and all applications were approved, with the exception of one and that was for 4 houses to be built on the radburn tara managed seating and play area. the plans involved moving the play area to next to the road! Well it is the end of an era, steve merriman finishes after 11 years and Jim Beaumont takes over as Parish Clerk. steve will still deliver meals for Good Neighbours and i’m sure will be closely involved in the music and Beer festivals. thanks steve for all your service to the people and community of rossington, and welcome Jim.

Mayoral candidate selected ROS JONES SELECTED to be labour candidate for Doncaster mayoral election labour’s Doncaster members have overwhelmingly selected experienced councillor ros Jones to be the Party’s candidate in may’s election for a new mayor. ros Jones, councillor for Askern spa ward for the last six years, is a chartered public finance accountant. she is a director of the North Doncaster Development trust, served as Doncaster’s Civic mayor during 2009/10 and is a school Governor at Campsmount school. she has a strong track record in her own ward.
rOs JONes sAiD: “i’m delighted to be selected by Doncaster’s labour members – in me they have a candidate who will work tirelessly for every vote – the hard work starts right away. i was born here and have always lived here, i’m hugely proud of Doncaster. in these tough economic times Doncaster needs a mayor who will ensure we fight for our fair share and regenerate this town.”
“i have the skills, knowledge and experience needed to be an effective mayor who can bring real change to Doncaster. i will work with other people, with local businesses and neighbouring authorities to maximise what Doncaster can achieve. With the government continuing to hit councils like ours hard there will be difficult decisions to be made, but i promise i will always prioritise the people who need help most.” Labour Leader and Doncaster North MP ed Miliband said: “i’d like to congratulate ros on winning the selection to be labour’s mayoral candidate. ros is Doncaster born and bred and is a fantastic talent who has the experience, values and skills needed to be a first class mayor. the current mayor has let this town down - he won’t stand up for the right people and is ineffective in fighting Doncaster’s corner. ros will always fight for Doncaster, she’s exactly what our town needs.”

Rossington Main 2012 FINISHED ON a bit of a high as we suffered just one defeat in the last 6 games of the year, giving some hope of a slight revival in our fortunes going into 2013. Admittedly the opposition were towards the lower half of the division but 11 points from a possible 18 was a good haul nevertheless. Just as pleasing was the fact that we were beginning to score goals and finish the chances that we had been creating at long last. Unfortunately 2 games versus eccleshill were cancelled, but a Boxing Day victory at Askern followed drawn games at Dinnington and at home to Pontefract, and the team were showing some consistency and spirit. the 2nd team have progressed in 2 Cup competitions in the past month and could be poised for at least one final come the end of the season. A 3-2 victory away at Davy F.C. of sheffield has guaranteed a quarter-final tie away at Jubilee sports on Jan.12th in the County Association Cup (our best standing yet in this competition) and an impressive 6-1 mauling of league leaders Bramley has seen us reach the semi-final stage of the Premier Division Cup. the adverse weather and Christmas break 1 ADULT

‘Grand Depart’ THE BIG NEWS in the last month
not just for the growing cycling community but for the entire county and beyond is that of Yorkshire landing the prestigious ‘Grand Depart’ of ‘le tour de France’ in July 2014! the turn of the year means that subscription renewals are now due - £12 full and £6 for Under 16’s - and also that various events are coming up: • the annual presentation night is set for Friday 22nd February at the Welfare and tickets are available now, be early with your ticket requirements! • the deadline for the summer kit order is approaching – 28th February. the kit will have our 5th major sponsor represented upon it as Jenkinson electrical engineering join AAD Gas, Gray Adams, exploration ltd and hudson Cycles as major club sponsors. We also have other sponsors that support the production of our wall chart of events. Kit will need to be ordered and paid up by the deadline date so that delivery is prompt in early April. • the local racing season is now nearly upon us with the traditional tommy simpson memorial ride on 24th February to start things off and then a 2 up 25 mile tt the following week at hatfield Woodhouse. the club’s summer run program has been drafted and features various new routes and rides of up to 130 miles. Club runs will likely be split into 3 groups with 2 groups embarking on that week’s longer route, one faster and one at club pace and a 3rd group taking a shorter or flatter option for those members that prefer that option in any given week. the size of the club has meant that we have had to take proactive steps to ease pressure on roads and cafes and early trials of this format have worked well. Finally, congratulations to Graham
Briggs who notched up 3 consecutive top 10 finishes in the prestigious Bay Crit series in south Australia representing a specially invited Great British team. many of the competitors in these races being World tour riders who have moved on to race the tour Down Under! Details of all club activities are on our facebook page and website www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or follow us on twitter @rossowheelers

In the scrum AFTER A QUIET period over
Christmas it has been all go in 2013. the hornets started the year with a tough fixture against Doncaster and struggled to assert themselves on the game. there were early opportunities for rossington but missed kicks allowed the visitors to pull out a lead that never looked in danger, comfortable winners in the end. Next up was the visit to Adwick with the hornets hungry for revenge from earlier in the season when they scored the only tries of the game but conceded points through penalties to fall to a narrow loss. this time around from the start it was obvious that the hornets were not in the mood to be robbed of victory again. With a more experienced back line buoyed by the inclusion of Nick Ashton at Fly half and the effervescent Aaron “eddie” haxell at inside centre. Good forward play in particular from man of the match scott Johnson enabled the ball to reach the backs and pass through to the wingers. this quick ball and good running was causing Adwick all sorts of problems. the black and yellows continued to ship the ball to the outside and rightfully went over when thorne rowan finished off an incisive move ten yards in from the touchline. the conversion went over followed by a penalty as Kai Wheatman had a good kicking day as well as contributing some good runs at outside

centre. Despite Adwick replying with a penalty the hornets stretched further ahead before half time with another well worked move, this time haxell going over. With the last kick of the half Adwick stayed in touching distance by putting over another penalty, rossington leading 15-6. in the second half Chris Walker took the kick off and was then mauled 40 yards up field by his pack before the ball was released with Nick Ashton laying on an inside pass to sam millward who covered the remaining 30 yards unopposed to touch down and gave rossington an unassailable lead before he limped off from a leg injury. From this point in rossington continued to play without being drawn into any unnecessary incidents despite their hosts best efforts to disrupt the play. Chances came and went in a less electric 2nd half with rossington failing to capitalise on good platforms but sturdy defence ensuring that their tryline again went unbroken. the hornets next home league game is on the 23rd march, 2.15pm kick off, although further fixtures may be scheduled into February. You can find further information on the hornets including fixtures, results, match reports and training details at http://www.pit chero.com/clubs/rossingtonhornets. ROSSINGTON TODAY 21

rossington Councillor’s update - February 2013 ROS JONES, COUNCILLOR for Askern Ward has been selected as labour candidate for the upcoming mayoral elections. All rossington Councillors will all be firmly behind her and encourage everyone to vote for her. she is an excellent candidate and will do Doncaster proud. We really do need to get this mayor out before he ruins Doncaster. Because this is an election with a single transferable vote we are suggesting to the supporters of ros to only use their first vote and not their second choice as this will help the mayor and give him an advantage. Don’t forget; this is how he won the first time around.
his team are the best in the whole borough.
the mayor has presented his budget and the Government has made yet more cuts with £100 million over the next 4 years. DmBC started with a nonschools budget of £496 million and by the time they have done in 4 years this will have been cut by £190 million; a cut of 40%. so much for the promise of just 10% cuts.
in rossington crime is yet again low, but there is a blip in burglaries, so please keep an eye out for any suspicious characters, local as well as strangers. Keep your doors and windows secure and check the iD of any callers. rossington has the lowest crime and AsB figures of any major village or town; let us keep it that way.
Yes we did need to make cuts, but we also needed to encourage and expand our economy. Gentle cuts and growth was and is the recipe, not the swingeing cuts that we are now having, with no investment in growth. so this tory/lib Dem Government are happy to cut the wages of the lowest paid, and at the same time give millions in tax cuts to the top 5% of the richest people by reducing the tax on people paid £150,000 or more from 50% down to 45%; absolutely scandalous!
the FArrrs link road has not been forgotten or put on the back burner, the initial survey work has started, however there is still some tough negotiations going on regarding rent etc. and as soon as these are settled then physical work will start on the road itself. We need to be patient; however, it is very difficult and frustrating.
the mayor wanted to get rid of the Neighbourhood teams because he thought that they did nothing, after some rather heated discussion he was asked to come to rossington to see what they did, but he refused. there will be a reduction in the Area teams, from 5 to 4, but the service thankfully remains. steve thomas, our area manager, is doing a fantastic job and 24 ROSSINGTON TODAY
it looks like the capital budget will include money for the refurbishment of the two derelict wings of holmescarr, i thought that i had lost this one, yet again a “rossington has had too much” from this mayor, but i got it through and this should bring in extra revenue to improve the place even more. Also steve thomas has applied for a grant to match fund the expansion of the skate park on the welfare. this will triple the size of the existing facility and encourage the kids to play in this area, not on the streets.
the inland Port will start at the same time as will the section 106 money that will finally bring back some education facilities to the Welfare with the creation of the Doncaster logistics College in rossington. this will be staffed with professional people there to help locals get the best opportunity to get jobs.
the new Civic offices have opened, it will save the Council money, but it is a rather soulless building and needs some paintings etc. to warm it up. Apart from the mayor, Cabinet and Directors no one has an office or desk, it is what is called ‘hot desking’ where the staff have a box and cupboard and use any desk they can find. Computers record where people are and even their phone number transfers to where they are sitting or even to home if they are working from home! there are hundreds of desks less than people and it is first come first serve! it is supposed to save space and money. south Yorkshire housing Association have put in two planning applications, one the redevelop meadow Court with 14 two bedroom properties and a second, more controversial, to build 4 properties on the radburn tara’s managed play park and garden. they propose to substitute this with an area next to the road. this is totally unacceptable and i have put in and objection and have asked to speak at the Planning Committee when it comes up to voice my objection.

AS FAR AS i know at this time of writing, we haven’t had any criminal activities on the estate and as the PACt meetings are now being held during the day, with the Police van parking on the Brodsworth Way Pavilion car park, it is a good opportunity to find out what is happening. the format is more of a “drop in” rather than a meeting. the next one is on 6th February, the van being parked from 11 until 12.30pm. our next coffee morning is on thursday 14th February, from 9.15 to 11.15am in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion, everyone is welcome. Perhaps this is a good time to remind you that the Pavilion is available for hire and details can be found on the notice board just outside. regards susan (tel. 869001)
