welcome

B

to the JANUARY 2013 edition of Rossington Today.

y the time you read this, Christmas will have happened, although at the time of writing I still have much to do before the big day! “Never set limits, go after your dreams, don’t be afraid to push the boundaries and laugh a lot - it’s good for you!” Wise words from Paula Radcliffe, in the Olympic year that is drawing to a close. So with 2013 upon us, take a little time to think about YOUR hopes and dreams. Put a plan in place to see if you can achieve them, just one step at a time and who knows where you’ll end up? And of course everyone in our magazine has had a dream at one point or another – starting their own businesses to support and serve local people is high on their priorities so don’t forget to support their dreams too by giving them a call if there’s anything you might need. Wishing you a peaceful 2013.

Best wishes, Paula x

Happy Newfrom Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all the Cause for a Cupper’s! Can you believe we have now dived full on into 2013. last year and all the wrappings that went with it are finished … for good, bad or indifferent. What we don’t know now is what the new year holds. eveRYONe talks of goals, New Year resolutions and other things in the “air-fairy” category. Did I just say that?! It was a bit tongue-in-cheek, I admit. Goals are good but if you are like me, maybe the IDeA of a goal is good but the hOW to set it so I can have a sporting chance to achieve it is the hard part. You may have heard of the “SmART” acronym when speaking about goals. It is neither a person who is wearing nice clothes nor the name of a tiny car. It is a way to remember 5 simple words to consider when we are looking towards setting a goal: 1. is it specific? have I been specific enough so that I know what I want to achieve rather than some big picture goal? For example ... “In 2013 I want to be more healthy” … rather … “In 2013 I want to stop smoking/exercise/eat more fruit & veg (pick one)” 2. is it Measurable? Is it something I can attach some kind of number? For example ... “I want

to cut down smoking/exercise” … rather … “I want to completely be off tobacco / I will exercise 3x a week (number of cigarettes can be counted as can visits to the gym or walks round the park” 3. is it Achievable? Is it something within my reasonable reach? For example … “I will exercise 2 hours 6x / week” … rather … “I want to exercise for 30 minutes 3x / week” 4. is it relevant? Is it something is worth my time and effort? For example … “I have a goal to cross the road 50x every Tuesday for a year” … rather … “I feel out of breath just walking upstairs so an exercise plan will help me greatly” 5. is it Time-limited? Is my goal something you can achieve in a set period of time vs. open ended. You are much more likely to be successful if a deadline is coming up rather than thinking you have all the time in the world. For example … “I will stop smoking one day” …. rather … “I want to stop smoking and be off any aids by 31/12 this year” Unfortunately there is no magic potion for goals. But I have found the little SmART formulae to be helpful. have a fantastic start to the new year and as always if you would like to pop in for a cuppa, the door is always open. 

Rossington Parish Council - January 2013 MORE MEETINGS THIS month,

in fact quite a busy month with a Parish Council meeting, two Triple A meetings, a Projects Committee and a Strategy Committee meeting. A Governance Committee was held to interview a short list of candidates for Parish Clerk. Jim Beaumont will start on 1st January to work with Steve merriman for a month to get experience. Jim worked for British Coal and DmBC and comes well recommended. he is a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and was a Properties manager at DmBC until he was made redundant a few years ago. Unfortunately John Adam has resigned from the Parish Council and it with some personal regret that he is leaving. I have known John for a great number of years, in fact I played rugby with him at Bridon, and do not fully understand why he has resigned. Well he will have a lot more time for his golf and his history group and I wish him well. This Tory/liberal Government has made a complete pig’s ear of the changes to Council Tax Benefits and this has resulted in Parish Councils being affected so badly that some have a potential 50% cut in their precept. We have a 20% or so potential cut. The Government have given DmBC a grant to cover this, but it is not ring-fenced. The mayor wants to keep that money and not give it to the Parishes. I am fighting against that as this would result in a terrible reduction in what we do as a Parish Council. even in the best case, not all of our projects may happen. I will let you know as soon as it is sorted out. At the Parish Council meeting on 13th Nov. several issues were raised by the public; income from the Beer Festival and Bonfire, housing development on the proposed golf course, double yellow lines at the bus stop on King Avenue, vandalism to the library building on mcConnell 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Crescent, the Footpath Inquiry at the Welfare on 14/11/12 and damage to holmescarr Wood footpaths by heavy machinery. Answers, action and explanations were given where appropriate. most of the meeting was approving minutes of meetings already reported on, however we did have a talk from elaine hirst from Doncaster Arts (DARTS) and co-director of ‘Right Up Our Street’ initiative. She wishes to work with groups and the Parish Council to increase the participation of people in the Arts. We looked at the budget forecast and it was approved, we look to be on target to hit our budget. Although there was some variation from the original; savings from some areas have paid for the extras expenditure at the village BBQ and the Beer Festival for example. The Projects Committee met to discuss the Christmas Fayre and an action plan was generated and it was agreed that it should go forward. leaflets have been given to all Primary schools in the village to hand out for the kids to take home as have leaflets for the village Panto (on 28th December at 10am and 6pm if you are an early recipient of this magazine). Posters have been put up in prominent places including shops and notice boards. The Triple ‘A’ Strategy Committee met twice firstly with DmBC officers and secondly with a planning consultant. It was decided to progress the Neighbourhood Plan using an outside consultant as it was getting too complex in view of the changeover of Parish Clerks. Consultation will take place in the New Year on a number of issues and I hope that we can get a good response.

The Strategy Committee met and a Grant to the epilepsy Project for their Christmas dinner. The committee thanked them for their work during the year. The Committee also discussed the next year’s Parish Budget. Due to the previously mentioned problems with next year’s precept it was decided to defer a decision until things became clear. It is hoped that this Government will take into account that the cuts affect the poorest Parishes the most and reconsider this mistake. They know it is wrong and have changed their minds on this several times and can’t get it right.

Howards run for Bluebell Wood

IT’S THAT TIME of year again when we’re all reflecting on the past year and looking to the future. It’s a time to focus on the changes we want to make and resolve to follow through on these by making our New Year resolutions. I’m sure lots of you reading this will have decided that 2013 is the year for you to become healthier and improve your fitness. At Bluebell Wood we know that this can be a battle, and hitting the streets at the end of a busy day can be a chore, however, running for your local children’s hospice could be just the motivation you need. Bluebell Wood Children’s hospice cares for local children who have a shortened life expectancy. By running for ‘Team Bluebell’ you could help us continue to provide this valuable service which costs £3 million per year and receives no statutory government funding. eleven-year-old Oliver suffers from a rare genetic condition called SmA type 2 and has been accessing the respite services at Bluebell Wood since it opened in 2008. Oliver always has a smile on his face and loves football, playing on his PS3 and spending time with his best friend Connor. During his visits at Bluebell Wood he became friends with lilly. The very gorgeous lilly who is six years-old visits the hospice as she suffers from Koolen Syndrome which means she has severe learning difficulties, epilepsy, worsening visual impairment and deteriorating mobility issues. mum vikky says;“We come to Bluebell as a family for quality time as that is rare in our lives. “It gives us the chance to get a full night’s sleep as her endless medication and continuous therapy is taken over by the care team, and we know no matter what the future holds for lilly they will always be there for us.” The children inspired International Football referee howard Webb, who is a patron for Bluebell Wood, to dig out his running shoes and run for the hospice. howard said; “I had a great time meeting 14 ROSSINGTON TODAY

lilly and Oliver and always feel very humbled when visiting Bluebell Wood. “The work they do is fantastic and I’m honoured to be a patron. They have inspired me to get my running shoes back on again to show my support and I’m urging others to do the same and help raise funds for this amazing place.” Think you’d like to join Team Bluebell? Why not sign up to a fun run, 10K or even a half marathon? Our fabulous fund-raising team will be behind you all the way. They will provide

you with inspirational stories, top fundraising tips, sponsorship forms and even a free Bluebell Wood running vest! Go to www.bluebellwood.org/running. php to sign up now or find out further information about local runs in the area, alternatively call us on 01909 517365. GreenFayre Gifts & Homeware of Rossington has recently had the honour of winning the Sine FM Biz Juice award for 2012. Owner Julie accepted the award live on air early in December. Here Julie provides us with the background to the shops success and how it all started: GreenFayre began after finding ourselves repeatedly frustrated at the lack of inspiration on the high street - gift ideas for our friends & family had seemed the same, year in - year out & we struggled to find something new that grabbed our attention and was reasonably priced. Prompted by the fact that we had recently become self-employed with our new company we decided to take the opportunity to look further afield and promptly fell in love with some beautiful products. Our first stock order of less than £200 was placed & we held an 'Open Day' at home in July 2011, to introduce friends & family to the Fair Trade, handcrafted items we had carefully chosen. Encouraged by their superb response, we embarked on the relentless journey to build GreenFayre, using every spare hour possible to promote our ever-growing ranges through social networking, monthly 'Open Days' at home, local markets and Craft/Gift Fairs and leaflet drops, as well as learning (very quickly!) how to build and run an E-commerce website. Amazingly, less than a year later, the first GreenFayre 'Bricks & Mortar' shop was opened in Rossington, and our customer base is still growing every week, both locally and through our website www.GreenFayre.co.uk and our facebook/twitter pages. GreenFayre is very proud and grateful to have just celebrated 6 months of trading from our new shop premises and with many more plans and ideas for growth, we are extremely excited at the prospect of what's to come. Our newest service is hand delivered, same day gifts Our aim is to provide a unique selection of products to make you 'ooh', 'aah' and smile, and with this in mind we have compiled a mix of carefully sourced gifts & homewares which are all as the GreenFayre motto states: Fair Trade, Handcrafted, Recycled & Battery Free! We would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who was kind enough to vote for us in the Sine FM ‘Simply Fred’ BizJuice Awards. We are over the moon to be able to say that we won! Our trophy is now proudly displayed in store for you all to see! Visit us just off King Avenue in Rossington, to sample our mix of reasonably priced products. We look forward to welcoming you soon

Rossington Main FOLLOWING OUR EXCELLENT

result at Parkgate in the Sheffield Senior Cup, we suffered a 3-1 defeat at Worsbrough in the league. however we managed to gain two successive wins against teams in the relegation struggle to end November in a slightly healthier league position. Selby Town were the first opposition and we gained only our 2nd clean sheet of the season with a 2-0 victory; the following week we triumphed 2-1 at Appleby Frodingham in Scunthorpe, but had we taken all our chances that day the margin of victory could and should have been greater. The first Saturday of December saw us host inform Albion Sports from Bradford at Oxford Street, and only two excellent goals from the visitors proved the significant factor in a narrow 1-2 defeat as we matched them in all other departments of the game. We have 5 further matches in December provided we can avoid the adverse weather which is now beginning to cause postponements. Incidentally the Senior Cup draw has been made and we host Staveley m.W. in the quarter-final as late as next march. Something to build and look forward to as we have rarely reached this stage of the Competition, and we are the lowest ranked Club still involved. The 2nd team have also gained 2 wins in November, one in the Cup and the other in a dwindling league - the reason I say this is that their other 2 matches have been cancelled due to our opponents’ failure to raise a side. Our Cup success against Caribbean Sports of the County Senior league sees us travel to another Sheffield side, Davy F.C., in the next round. The 2-0 win was rather more comfortable than the score-line suggests and this was followed by a 4-2 league victory over Scawthorpe& Bentley. Sadly November has proved to be a disastrous month for the U.17 side with four consecutive defeats including an early exit from their league Cup 20 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Rossington Wheelers festive news

THE CLUB IS enjoying a very good end to what has been a very successful year as we roll steadily now into December and what is really considered the off-season...’off season’ meaning that we only do about 80 miles a weekend in winter, though all of them are fairly steady. Now is the time to get out and start to step up if next summer’s club runs are your target and there’s no better opportunity than Christmas week to do this, and its safer in a group now with tricky road conditions – more later on these rides. The Children In Need charity event at ASDA back in November went off better than we could have imagined - trouble free, with brilliant support from family, friends, shoppers and staff and a ready and willing pool of riders saw us cover 987 miles in the 24 hr period (48 riding hrs with 2 bikes) at an average speed of 20.5mph! In all we covered 1197 miles including the guest bike which was ridden by amongst others howard Webb and Pudsey Bear himself! So far our fundraising totaliser has reached around £3,800 but many riders are still busy collecting and so a target of £5,000 may not be out of reach – a fantastic effort by all involved! Thank you to ASDA of course and to les hudson, Wattbike and highFive for support with equipment to make the event possible. www.justgiving.com/ rossingtonwheelers-childreninneed is the link to make a donation still. The Xmas Club ride list –

Oldcotes 30miles 1/1 10.00 ??? Discuss on arrival As I say above these are the rides to get on as a step up to full club rides especially if you got some new kit from Santa? We now have 85 active members in the club, including women and juniors and an age range of 65 years! To get involved or explore the club further visit our website www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or our Facebook or Twitter pages or nip and see les at hudson Cycles and pick up our 2013 Wallchart / Race Calendar / mileage Counter for more details about us. The first ride can seem

daunting but we’ve all been there, if you have ridden 30 miles on your own, a steady 50 with the club will be easy! Compliments of the season to all readers, and all the best for the coming year from all at rossington Wheelers. Brendan simpson. 

Patient Group WEST END CLINIC runs a Patient Participation Group which meets approximately every 3 months at the Clinic. The meeting lasts approximately an hour. At present, we have 4 patient members but would like to increase this number. The group makes suggestions and discusses possible ways to improve the service we offer. If you are interested, please contact helen Clamp, Practice manager or Amanda edwards, Assistant Practice manager on 01302 865865. PS Free tea/coffee and biscuits will be available! 

Rossington Councillor’s update - January 2013 I DID PUT my hat in the ring to be the labour Party Candidate for mayor, but was not shortlisted. Craig Sahman and Ros Jones were the two selected. I am not really surprised, the labour Party works in mysterious ways and it always will. I am chairing a joint Careers & Guidance Review with the Schools, Children and Young People Scrutiny Panel. The Regeneration and environment Scrutiny Panel, of which I am vice Chair, leads on this, as unemployment comes under its purview we decided to carry out a review. It was decided to invite the SCYP Panel to review this jointly. This should be interesting as we have a severe skills mismatch in Doncaster. Although we were known for heavy industry, in engineering and mining and have a deep knowledge and skills base in those industries; we are perceived to not have the right skills for the modern employer. We have met with the Youth Council and taken evidence from them and they gave us some interesting, if disturbing, information on schools career advice and how they view their future. It was apparent that the help was limited and they were left in limbo, expecting more help, but generally left on their own. Advice on subjects to take and future prospects was generally missing. We’ll see what happens when we see others soon. On the more sobering front we have had the Ofsted report on our Children’s services and it was not good, we were judged to be inadequate, an appalling situation that we must correct. On the same day lord Carlile’s report on the edlington case was published and this also was damning. We must do better and things are being done 24 ROSSINGTON TODAY

to correct this as soon as practically possible. It came out that yet again Councillors were not being kept informed. It is budget time again at the Council and yet again I am on labour’s budget working group and it is not good news, instead of a £23m cut it is a £33m cut and it is getting difficult to find the money. The full extent of the budget cuts will not be known for two weeks until the grants figures are published, leaving very little time for us to consult with Overview and Scrutiny management Committee. This will be the mayor’s budget but we will do our best to make sure that any of the cuts are fair to all and that the impact is reduced. That mayor told me on Friday that “Rossington has had enough money” and that “everything goes to Rossington”. This is because we asked for help repairing holmescarr, as two parts are still derelict. This is the only Council owned building that is self-financing and doesn’t cost the Council anything. The pay-back time is three and a half years and after that will pay into the Council. Because Recycoal is here the mayor thinks that we have been given a load of money, but it’s not true. Because of the Inland Port and the link Road the mayor thinks that Rossington is rich! Rossington has a fine heritage with fine people living here and that is what we are rich in, we may have a future that will bring money into the village but not quite yet. I and my two colleagues, hilary and Barry are doing our best to improve and enhance the lives of the people of

Rossington and will continue to do so even with a mayor who cannot and will not understand the complex nature of a village that has lost thousands of jobs. Please don’t forget that the library is open in holmescarr and it still needs volunteers to run it. If we get a few more volunteers then we may be able to extend its’ opening hours. Please come and see how nice it is. Also at holmescarr is the Community Café serving breakfasts and lunches monday to Friday. 

Methodist ministers festive message

I GREW UP in a house that had very

few books, with the exception of the Bible. Unlike my wife who grew up surrounded by books, who on family holidays spent hours in secondhand bookshops whilst her parents browsed the shelves, I never had that joy of encountering literary delights. I have made up for it since as our house is filled with books on a variety of subjects, and now I have ventured on my birthday into the world of e-books. It is 75 years since the publication of a book that is now the subject of a trilogy of films, the first being released shortly in the UK. It is of course the book The hobbit, the film’s first part is entitled ‘An unexpected journey’. The tale of Bilbo Baggins who is dragged from the comfort of his home and thrust into a dangerous set of adventures with strange people

and even more bizarre creatures is a story worth getting your hands on, no matter what age you are. As we celebrate Christmas and take tentative steps into a New Year, we encounter in the Bible an even more extraordinary ‘ unexpected journey’, that of God coming to adventure with us in Jesus. In facing life’s twists and turns, joys and sorrows, hope and despair, we have someone who shares all of this with us each step of the way. No matter how ‘unexpected’ the journeys we have and will take in Jesus we have a companion not just for now but always. May you and yours have a Peaceful, Joyful and safe Christmas and New Year. rev. Tickhill & District Lions update CAN I START by wishing you all a happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 11th of December. To the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we helped Santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill & District lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. so thank you once again from Tickhill & District Lions and from all of the people that your donations will help! 
