welcome to the JUNE 2013 edition of Rossington Today.
“Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.” ~ Al Bernstein
June already! How this year is flying by. As I write this the sun is shining but as yet we have seen little sunshine this year, although the early May Bank Holiday Monday was a rare treat. I was lucky enough to visit Hodsock Priory so see the beautiful bluebells and make the most of the warmth. June brings with it the longest day, Father’s Day and the commencement of Summer Fairs, charity days and family days. Look out for details this month and over the coming issues, for events around the area. Not only fun events, but valuable fundraising opportunities for so many local good causes. If you would like to see an event publicised in these pages please let me know. The July issue will be delivered during the last few days of June, anything you would like included should be with me by Friday 14th June.

Happy Fathers Day
Welcome back to Cause for a Cuppa. I continue to be pleasantly surprised over the number of people who say that they look forward to our little visit once a month. We have something common we all care about … our families. My hope is that there might be the odd thing here or there that could encourage you over a rough spot … help re-build a bridge or celebrate a victory. Actually, Father’s Day may be in any one (or more) of those three categories. They are for me. A number of people have asked me about my attempt to contact my father. I wrote the letter several months back … but no response. Two good things came from that: the appreciation for my own children and that I can be a Dad to them and second, it may have given you the courage to do something similar. If you have, I would be very interested in hearing your story.

ROSSINGTON TODAY
We celebrate Father’s Day this month. For whatever reason, it doesn’t seem to have quite the “welly” as Mother’s Day. I would like to think about a special gift that you can receive AND give at the same time. This gift costs nothing. Men often struggle to give it, particularly with their sons. I am talking about the gift of touch. I grew up in one of those families that did not do hugs. I missed out greatly. Dads, when is the last time you hugged your children? They all need it … even (and maybe especially) the teens or young adults. Do it in a way and
time that is not embarrassing to them. Don’t force it. These last couple of years, my 21 year old lad has now become “hugable” again. Honestly, it is NOT natural for me. I need to do it on purpose. When it happens, there is nothing like it. I once heard a story of a prisoner who had occasional visits with his wife and children. The room was set out with a round table, chairs bolted to the floor and a corner piled high with toys for the children. The prisoner’s chair was red. As the man talked with his wife, the children would shout out to the Dad to come, obviously wanting his attention. As the Dad stood up to go to his child, the guard shouted, “prisoner, get back in your chair!”. He would give anything to give his children a hug. Dad … Happy Fathers’ Day. If you would like to pop in for a cuppa, the door is always open.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Rossington Councillor’s update - JUNE 2013 Well the election has come and gone and, thankfully, we have a Labour Mayor, Ros Jones, who had a small majority on the first round and the second round. The first count for Rossington took 24 minutes, the result was announced 7 hours later. We had a recount, Peter Davies asked for one because he was behind. Ros Jones’ majority went up! Then there were some problems with the verification and some votes being in the wrong pile so all the votes were then verified again. Ros Jones’ majority went up again. Then the second preference votes were counted and Ros Jones’ majority went up yet again. Ros has picked her cabinet and Rossington’s own Nuala Fennelly a Balby Ward Councillor and a Rossington Parish Councillor is in the Cabinet for Children’s Services – Schools. At last we have competent people in the Cabinet and now we may be able to move forward. The Schools Children & Young People Directorate is in dire need and this especially needs good supervision and vision, I’m
10 10
sure that Nuala and Tony Corden, Armthorpe Ward Member, will be more than able to turn this around. I am Vice Chair of the Overview and Management Scrutiny Committee. The Area Teams have been reorganised yet again due to money constraints. They have taken much more than their fair share of cuts, especially as it is they who interact with the public so much. Most of their work is unseen and often misunderstood and this cut, I believe, is too much. We will be in the ‘South West’ which will stretch from Finningley around the south of Doncaster right round to Mexborough. This is too much area and green fields for such a small team. We still have Steve Thomas and Alison Bryan, but we are stretched a bit thin. We had two informal meeting for the Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Panel; one an exciting topic – looking into a centralised
waste transfer station and the other a meeting with the Racecourse managing director and the Chief Executive of Arena Leisure. Other than that it has been a quiet month with the election taking its’ deserved prominence. T

Garden View
Express Yourself At a time when I’m making preparations for my summer holidays and browsing through pictures of tropical locations, I can’t help but compare them with the images of England that I hold in my mind. It wasn’t until I visited America last year, that I realised how very English we are, and how we really do live up to the stereotype we’ve been given. I wouldn’t say I’m a shrinking violet when it comes to confidence, but I really did feel quite reserved. As a nation, I don’t think we’re very good at expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our emotions, and whilst I’m not advocating yelling at random people in the street because “your dust cart is blocking my parking lot” or applauding in the cinema (both of which I experienced whilst over there last year), I do think that when it comes to gardens we are, in the main, a little unadventurous. In
fact, I would go as far as to say that a striped lawn and three borders are as traditional as our Sunday roast! But fear not, it doesn’t have to be this way. Expressing yourself outdoors needn’t mean exposing your inner most secrets, but I do think your outdoor space should reflect your personality. The residents at Bestall Towers are generally neat and tidy (in fact clutter makes my head hurt), so my garden reflects this with its simple straight lines, well ordered borders, immaculate patio, and perfect lawn! So what does my garden say about me? I’m a clean freak, with an obsession for perfection and a need to control my environment … pretty accurate I’d say. So what does your garden say about

you? Does it reflect who you are, or maybe who you were? Maybe it’s time for a change and to let loose that wild side, paint the fence black and plant only orange flowering plants. Whatever you do, break from the norm and express yourself. T

Rossington Parish Council - JUNE 2013 On the 1st and 2nd of June we are having the Parish Council Vintage Vehicle and Steam Show on the Welfare 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. This is a charitable event and we hope to raise lots of money for Help the Heroes. Please come along for a great day out. There will be a wide range of attractions: Traction Engines, Vintage Tractors, Motorcycles, Miniature Steam Engines, Stationery Engines, Classic and Vintage Cars, Model Displays, Craft and Trade Stalls, Traditional Fairground Amusements, Food Stalls and Many Other Attractions. The village consultation has now finished with some very interesting answers and I think that it should be no surprise that shops come high on the list of improvements that people would like. The end of the consultation will just have finished as Rossington Today is published so full results next month and of course if we can work the steam driven thing, on the web site. A lot of planning has gone ahead for the Medieval Festival and the Music Festival, with the line up almost settled. I thought it was settled, but one band dropped out and it caused so many problems, but at the moment it is fixed.
The Music festival will be under cover (!) because August lately has been a bit wet, so we have a 4000 person tent and a beer and food tent that seats 350. The Beer Festival planning moves on apace. The bands are booked, the beer is partly sorted and for the first time Rossington Festival Bitter will make its’ debut at the Music festival for a trial and will be on full show at the Beer Festival. At the Village Fun Day in September, it is hoped that the Rovers will be organising a football competition, so not only will Eric the Viking be there, so will free rides and attraction for the kids as well as a BBQ and Music. As the summer progresses please keep an eye out for our Posters. There has been no Parish Council meeting, just a Projects Committee meeting at which we had an update of the next event The Vintage Vehicle and Steam Show and subsequent events. We had a Planning Committee meeting with nothing too controversial and a Triple ‘A’ update meeting, which is going well. Finally and for the third time, don’t forget the Vintage Vehicle and Steam Show on the Welfare on the 1st and 2nd June between 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. T

Bircotes Leisure Centre offers fantastic Badminton coaching for young people on Saturday mornings between 10am – 12noon.
Suitable from age 8 upwards, we currently have players from 8-18yrs. All being coached by fully trained coaches who are CRB checked. Our main aim is to promote badminton as a fun sport which can be enjoyed by children of all ages and mixed abilities. Badminton is a sport which can be played by all the family and we find that once we have taught the children the basics they tend to play with their families.

As well as the coaching the children get plenty of opportunities to play games, everyone gets loads of exercise while having a great time. Even though we have fun on the Saturday mornings we also encourage the children to go further in the badminton world. We have put forward a number of children who now play for their county and have five others who are now training with the England Squad! The 1st team escaped relegation by 4 places and a 10 point gap although a run of 3 consecutive defeats in mid-April once made it look like the margin of success might have been closer. A very creditable draw
away at Athersley in Barnsley upset the League leaders’ ambitions, but this was followed by 3 defeats! Our nearest rivals Appleby Frodingham then visited Oxford Street for a crucial game which eventually ended all-square at 1-1. Fortunately Appleby went on to lose their remaining games, as did Askern, Yorkshire Amateur and Dinnington meaning that our last day success at Clipstone As the league season has now finished, the Hornets would like saw us climb one more place. to say a big thanks to all the guys With a slightly depleted squad that have put a shirt on this year. we returned 1-0 winners. Our 2nd team lifted the Premier Again it’s been another building Division Cup with a 2-0 success over year and towards the rear end Sutton Rovers. Our young side scored of the season we started to put twice in the 2nd half through Scott in the performances we are Maughan and Marcel Chipamaunga, capable of and teams won’t the latter proving to be perhaps be wanting to come down to the Club’s find of the season. has been severely disrupted by 5 clubs withdrawing during the year, resulting in many matches being
declared void, and major adjustments to League positions being calculated. Mid-May sees the commencement of pitch maintenance and ground repairs and improvements in an effort to keep our facilities at the highest grade possible. The pitch is being totally re-seeded and provided conditions are favourable we should have a good surface to start preseason friendlies come mid-July. Pitch maintenance costs have been kindly funded by two draws that have run amongst Club members. We shall be looking at further sponsorship to secure more funding to carry out ground improvements and repairs. If you can assist in any way (with materials, man-power or finance) then contact any member of the Club, the majority of our committee will be probably found at the ground any Saturday morning. T
ROSSINGTON MWBC Both teams have made an encouraging start to their League programmes and lie mid-table after a month. Our own internal General Handicap has been drawn with matches due to commence immediately, and 14 social bowlers attended the first Thursday morning session in bright sunshine last week. We are hoping the weather holds fine for the big South Yorkshire event we are hosting on May 26th. The fine weather has also enhanced the work carried out by our volunteer gardeners, as the flowers come into
bloom around the greens. There is still a bit of work to be done but we are continuously receiving compliments from visitors on the general appearance of our site at the Welfare, many commenting on what a pleasure it is to bowl at Rossington. We are in desperate need to encourage younger members. We are very much an ageing Club, which seems to be all the more apparent this year. Selection of teams can be somewhat fraught on occasions as our resources are stretched to the limit. No doubt the “Dunkirk” spirit will prevail and we will work our way through this predicament. T

Wheelers cylcling club
A good month has brought much success for the village’s riders, a hole host of category, section and overall prizes with Stephen Patterson regularly featuring at the sharp end of the junior category and club TT champion Gary Irvine and hill climb champion Shaun Randall scooping their categories in races also.
Rossington Wheelers sit 4th overall in the league (viewable at www. sheffrec-cc.org.uk/jejamesttcomp) which is being dominated at the top at this stage by Rossington based outfit Sugarcane Velo Club, with their riders sitting 1st, 3rd and 5th in the current individual standings. Wheelers riders Randall, Irvine and Richard Lunt sit 10th, 13th and 15th. 6 riders in the top 15 from village clubs is some achievement! Ady West performed well in a high quality 50 mile event, completing the Bedford event in 2.02:23 and Lee Cairns was 6th in the windy Yorkshire 10tt championships. Many other events have been completed and results are to be collated into an organised format shortly. The clubs own AAD Gas Handicap TT League is hotting up after Round 5 of the 20 event series the standings are: 1. Dan Virr 29 points 2. Rob Shepherd 28 Leading veteran 3. Brian Seymour
24
4. Neave Jones 20 Leading lady and leading junior The average turnout has been about 20 riders each week and the competition in all categories looks set to hot up as the handicapper gets a grip of those improving riders!
One notable achievement last month was Charles Harvey who completed the 200+ mile personal challenge of ‘The Road From Wembley’ on FA Cup Final day, leaving Wembley at 5.00am and arriving in Rossington at 7.00pm to settle down in The Welfare with a few ‘recovery’ drinks! Links to all club information are available from our website www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk! T
How’s that? The Under 13’s made a good start to the season with a win over Brodsworth away, setting a score of 91-6 and Brodsworth, fell short by 4 runs. After losses against Don Town A & B, Rossington returned to winning form again at their next match Home to Fishlake, Rossington having bowled well were left chasing 86. This score was knocked off in the last over with Rossington winning by 1 run and 5 balls remaining. A fantastic start to our Juniors season. We have unfortunately not had so much luck with our under 11’s side due to limited number of children attending we are having to only play in friendly matches this year but are still on the lookout for any children who are interested in joining our under 11’s to come along to our Practice Sessions Monday evenings 6pm till 8pm everyone is welcomed. Rossington 1st XI, and 2nd XI have both started the season well each with 2 wins out of 3 matches. Smashing performance from the 2nd team Captain Neil Blackman of 104 before the loss of his wicket. Their match against Ryhill saw Rossington 2nd XI winning with standout

‘The Lions Abroad’
This month I thought I would bring you a bit of an international flavour. The Lions strive to help local communities all over the world.
Tombola, Cake Stall, Hook-aduck, Bric-a-Brac, Bottle Stall, Oriflame Cosmetics Stall, Hot Drinks/Scones and more! Come along and join us! T
They have the chance to swim, dance, make crafts and importantly make new friends. The Lions from Oradea raise funds through organising many events including concerts and dances. Moving swiftly on to Hungary another group of Lions in a place called Miskolc support a local guide dog school. Instead of adopting the traditional method of fund raising for cash donations they took some guide dogs to the local pet store where patrons were encouraged to buy and donate dog food, tools and other supplies. Finally, moving onto the city of Oslo. The Lions created the biggest book sale in Norway since 1976. Forty five thousand books split into 30 categories were offered for sale. The proceeds went to many good causes including youth sports, scouts, outings for senior citizens and schools and orphanages in Ghana. If you want more details of any of these initiatives you can view the Lions Magazine at the following website. http://www. lionsclubs.org/EN/news-andevents/lion-magazine/index.php. Back to Tickhill and a big thank you to those people who supported us at the Scarecrow festival and a reminder to seek us out at Bawtry, Wadworth or Tickhill Gala’s. T

First of all let’s take a trip to Massachusetts in America where a Lions club spent three weeks removing debris from the Miller River after trees collapsed into it after a major storm. After a lot of hard work the river was cleared making it a safe environment for river users and nature lovers alike. Moving on to Romania where, for the last 5 years a group of Lions have been arranging an annual camp for children with diabetes. The camp is a haven where the children can feel accepted.

Rossington Male Voice Choir On Monday 22nd.April the choir were honoured to be asked by the Royal Air Force Association to join them at Doncaster Mansion House to celebrate the 100th. birthday of Mr. Eric Clarke the last surviving member of the wartime Royal Air Force Bomber Command. We were accompanied by the Rossington Ladies who Love to Sing to perform to a large crowd of Eric’s family, friends and various dignitaries. We were pleased to attend the occasion in honour of a very gallant gentleman. The celebrations ended with a flypast over the Mansion House by a lone Lancaster bomber which dipped its wings in salute. The choir wish to repeat our appeal for new members. We are now in a serious situation following the loss of four members recently through ill health and death and must recruit in order to continue. This choir has a long and proud history which will come to an end without additional support. T ROSSINGTON TODAY 33 33

DONCASTER TRIMMERS BENEFITS OF TINTING
• Reduced glare: Tinting your vehicle can drastically reduce glare from the sun, making driving on bright days much safer • Reduced UV: Tinting dramatically reduces UV rays, which are damaging to both you and your car’s interior • Cooling: Tinting can have a cooling effect on your vehicle, allowing a more pleasant drive, and reduce costs associated with running air conditioning • Security: Not only may tinting act as a deterrent, but the tinting film will also hold shattered glass in place, making it difficult for your potential thief to access your valuables • Looks great: Window tinting also looks fantastic, and greatly enhances the appeal of your vehicle
