welcome to the MARCH 2013 edition of Rossington Today.
Being a mother is one of the highest salaried jobs... since the payment is pure love. ~Mildred B. Vermont With Mother’s Day approaching I thought I would look for a quote about mothers this month and came across this lovely one. Being a mum can be hard at times (particularly during half term which is when I am writing this)! However the rewards are many and varied, from the thrill of first steps, to the satisfaction of children spreading their wings as independent young people and then moving on to creating families of their own. As Mother’s Day approaches give a thought for all Mums at whatever stage of motherhood they may be, and don’t forget those around you who no longer have their mums to treat this Mother’s Day. The next issue will be delivered from 28th March – Good Friday. Anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th March.
Best wishes, Paula x

Mothers Day WELCOME TO CAUSE for a Cuppa. Do you like Paula’s (editor) new format?! I do … very attractive and professional. I am sure it would be encouraging to her to just drop her a quick note to let her know what you think. She is a very busy woman but everyone needs encouragement. Speaking of “very busy woman” … Mother’s Day is here once again. We have mentioned so many times that days like this tend to bring up incredibly happy feelings or sometimes sad or even angry emotions. For me, this is now the 2nd Mother’s Day without my own Mum. I think my last day with her will be one of those times I will keep with me forever. In mum’s busy life as a single mother with 4 children, she did her very best to be taxi driver as well as science project helper. She took personal time with each of us. Though we didn’t have much in the way of material things, she gave of herself. I wanted to tell you a brief story about a woman named Susanna Wesley. You may recognise the “Wesley” name. Her sons, John and Charles Wesley started the Methodist Church movement. Large families were common in the 18th century. Susanna took that to heart. She was
8
the 25th child of 25. She, in turn, had 19 children. Susanna took her responsibilities seriously. She knew the importance of personal time with each of her children. With all her other duties, she would dedicate at least one focused hour a week to each of her children. The story goes (and this is the funny bit), when it came time to “Susanna time”, she would put her apron up over her head. That was the signal to “leave mum alone”. Wonder how that would work today?! I know 21st century life is busy and times are different than in the 1700’s. However, family needs are the same. So to all of you amazing mums out there, please take time to invest some time/energy in the most precious thing in all the world … your children. If you would like to pop in for a cuppa, the door is always open. (Eric Simpson, Pastor … 07828141472 … eric@communitybaptist.co.uk … Facebook)

Rossington Parish Council - March 2013 STEVE MERRIMAN HAS retired and we held a small surprise farewell party. Steve really thought we were having a Projects committee meeting and as usual prepared a full agenda, including a guest speaker! Well, I had some difficulty cancelling the guest speaker and then having to change the time of the meeting and in the end it worked. Carol Beaumont and my wife Janet secretly prepared food etc. and Steve was so amazed it was funny. Steve received a very special present, ask him what it was when you see him! Anyway Jim Beaumont has started and looks to be an asset to the Parish Council, he has already found a source of funding for the Memorial Hall, and so things are moving on. We also have two new Parish Councillors Alison Harper and Julie Shaw, both co-opted on to the Parish Council to replace John Adam and Bev Harrison. Both are well known in the village and both should be good Parish Councillors. Alison (Ali) is from the Poacher and Julie is the manager of Victim Support. Things are moving ahead with our projects and the first, now named, Easter Eggstravaganzer, this for children up to 11. There will be a children’s Easter fancy dress parade (with prize) and a chocolate hunt divided into under 7’s and 8’s to 11’s, everyone will be a winner. This will be held around Brodsworth Way play area and pavilion and open to the entire village. There will be coffee and tea served in the pavilion, the usual BBQ and free rides on a funfair and the compulsory bouncy castle. This is on 31st March; the start will be 11.00am, and expect a fun day out. Our first big event, the Vintage Vehicle and Steam Show on 1st and 2nd June is expected to be much, much bigger than last year and will have something for everyone. There will hopefully be several big steamers this year and the usual mix of stalls, and exhibits. A friendly fun day out that shouldn’t be missed. 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY
The Medieval Festival grows by the day we now have two groups of Vikings, perhaps as many as 50, 70 to 80 Normans, we also have groups of Plantagenets and Hundred Year’s War Knights all giving different sorts of displays, but all fighting at some point, and at the end of the day a massed battle, ‘The Battle of Rossington’ with as many as 200 taking part. We also have a Tudor living history group giving Tudor cookery and dancing lessons, we have another living history group that is putting on plays, playing music, well the hurdy gurdy and bagpipes, and showing leather and metal work skills. We have falconry, jesters, wandering minstrels, storytellers and Saxon wood turners and weavers and a medieval market. There will be a beer tent and food available and you will be able to join the reenactors at a free music show in the beer tent in the evening. At the Parish Council we agreed to send our new Parish Clerk on a New Parish Clerks course, it would be good if he learned the ins and outs of the job. We also filled two vacancies on committees that we had deferred at the last meeting, Julie on one and Alison on the other, that was easy. We had a Planning Committee meeting at which there was no controversial decisions to make. One notification of an appeal was reported and that appeal was dismissed. We had two Triple A Regeneration committee meeting at which DMBC officers gave a timeline for us to follow to get the Neighbourhood Plan completed and a list of consultees, none the least the people of Rossington. It was decided that progress had to be made and that the Neighbourhood Plan should go to a referendum and see if it was feasible to complete it by July or August. After legal
advice it was agreed that there were no declarations of interest. Finally John Gibson volunteered to be on a joint committee with the three Ward Councillors, a DMBC officer and representatives of Recycoal. This committee is the allocation committee for the moneys coming to the village from Recycoal over the next four to five years. It was suggested that the money could be used to fund the building up of the allotment being provided by Recycoal.

Garden View
WRIGGLE WRIGGLE A NEW DANCE craze perhaps? Well maybe … if you’re a worm that is! In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free? As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre- made version online? Most kids love worms
so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time. Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato, (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters…they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle). That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding actively in line with their environment. Bizarrely they can also change gender to suit the local talent on offer!
does not get too hot or cold. Their home can be insulated in winter, or moved into the garage. The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted at 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too.
They don’t like extremes in temperature, so I’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which
TOP TIPS
Other jobs to do this month include:
Protecting early spring growth from pesky slugs (try a midnight slug hunt!)
Hoe off any newly germinating weed seedlings on a dry day
Cut back shrubs such as Cornus (dogwood) and Buddleia
Herbaceous perennials such as Hostas which are just

beginning to re-grow can be dug up and chopped into 2 or 4 pieces and replanted to make more. Begin feeding fish Don’t forget to provide food for the worms – add a 5cm layer of compost to the top of the soil and let the worms pull it in.
Until next time, happy gardening,

Top Tips for your Lawn this Spring Like everything else in the garden, our lawns are learning FROM AS to cope with the ups and downs of climate change. LITTLE AS Our lawns take a real battering as a result and we ENT PER TREATM expect them to come back year after year. inc. VAT Well, they will - we take it for granted. Their ability to bounce back is amazing but that doesn’t mean they don’t need some help because every year it gets that bit more difficult. With a little time and effort you can have a handsome and healthy lawn for your family to enjoy which is the envy of all your friends and neighbours.
£15.00
Here are our six tips to get your lawn off to a flying start.
Spot the GreenThumb lawn
Clean Up
Rake away those dead leaves, twigs and branches. The less debris on the lawn, the healthier it will be, not to mention the real benefit from increasing its exposure to sunlight.
Lawns don’t like shade Take a good look at those border plants, shrubs and trees – they all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn’s space and weakening it by denying it light. Then … get the secateurs out!
Is your mower up to the job?
Cle ar up leav es
Check your mower is up to the job - it’s not too late to get it serviced. Make sure the blade is sharp and keep it that way by buying a spare and swapping it over as the season progresses. Remember to raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – cutting it too low will put the grass into stress and set it back - just when you want to encourage it.
Does your lawn need some T.L.C? The ground starts to warm now so it’s a good time to repair those bare patches that always appear over winter. Carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out. They’ll germinate in a few days. Don’t mow or feed them until a few weeks have passed and they’re well established.
Hand-pick those early weeds.
Early weed growth
If hand-picking isn’t your thing and you don’t fancy buying, storing and handling chemicals, get the professionals in.
Look out for sickly-looking patches. Leatherjackets, the larval form of the ‘Daddy Long-legs’ can devastate a lawn in spring as they chomp through the roots of the grass. If you suspect a problem, get professional advice.
GreenThumb have over 220 branches nationwide. Call your local branch today for a FREE lawn analysis and quote. We offer a great service and amazing value for money.

THE FOOTBALL SEASON is
coming to an end which means that the U17’s team will no longer be playing together. Through the years they have made our Sundays special and in 2012 they had their reward when they won the First Division cup by a massive 56 points, not losing a game and conceding only 25 goals all season. Credit must go to their manager Troy Bubb who taught them from an early age. Sundays won’t be the same! We wish them all the very best for the future. From their Parents & Grandparents

Loki HELLO FROM US all at the Sanctuary. The start of the year has had its ups and downs. We have had quite an influx of dogs and cats coming to us over Christmas which is usual for this time of year. What is unusual is that lots of pedigree dogs are with us for various reasons. We have some beautiful Labradors, German Shepherd and smaller pedigrees all needing loving homes. If you feel you would like to spend your life with a pet whether it be a dog or a cat please call and see us we are open 2-4 during the week and 1-4 at a weekend. Closed on a Tuesday. If you also have time on your hand and need to get fit can we suggest you come and walk some of our dogs during the day. Mornings are better before we open or any time on a Tuesday. It gives us all an incentive to walk if we have a four legged friend at our side & you will be surprised at how much the fresh air and exercise will help lift your spirits especially now the weather is getting a little better. If you would like further information please call us 01302711330 or 07969203206.

Rossington Main
SADLY AT THE time of writing this article the 1st team are still awaiting their first points of 2013, although it must be noted that only 3 games have been played, with 4 other scheduled matches postponed due to snow/ice/waterlogged conditions. A 2-1 defeat away at Knaresborough was our only competitive match in January; February started with a 1-0 home defeat to Louth.
The match at Teversal a week later was nowhere near as close as we slumped to a heavy 5-0 defeat. With so many cancellations, games are now likely to be coming fairly frequently into the last 2 months of the season and we shall no doubt have cancelled games rescheduled for midweek. We must mention the opening week of March when both 1st and 2nd team have perhaps their biggest matches of the season so far. On Tuesday 5th the 1sts host Staveley in the quarter-final of the Sheffield Senior Cup with a 7-30p.m. kick-off. Four days later our 2nd team face Kirkburton (Huddersfield area) in the semi-final of the Association Cup, having beaten previously undefeated Jubilee Sports (Sheffield) away in the quarter-final. The 2nd team sadly lost their first Cup game of the season on Feb. 9th when, down to 10 men, they were beaten 5-2 in the Doncaster Challenge Cup, this defeat following a 1-0 loss at Kinsley in the League a week earlier.

BAWTRY TOWN 2-00pm PREM.DIV.CUP SEMI-FINAL Tuesday March 26th 1st v. ECCLESHILL UNITED 7-45pm Saturday March 30th 1st v. HALLAM F.C. 3-00pm Finally this month a plea for help in trying to catch the low-life of the village who are breaking in to properties. We know private houses, shops and schools have been targeted and now our own tea-bar has been added to the list. Stock was taken, as well as the damage caused by their forced entry in the early hours. Similar to other ventures in Rossington, we are volunteers trying to provide a service that the community can
benefit from and it is distressing when these facilities are constantly burgled, particularly as the tea-bar is our major source of regular income to keep the Club solvent. There may be a reward for any information received that could lead to the perpetrators being identified to the police.
Rossington MWBC NOT TOO LONG now before the bowling community come out of the warmth of their winter hibernation to once again stretch their limbs on the greens in preparation for the 2013 season. Little has been done in terms of maintenance since last October, although a couple of volunteers were responsible for removing almost 60 sacks of leaves from the gutters and gardens as Autumn took its toll on the neighbouring trees. No doubt we shall find at least one project 28 ROSSINGTON TODAY
to complete in the lead-up to the start of the season. With the next Doncaster meeting scheduled for mid-March, notice is hereby given of the Club’s pre-season meeting on SUNDAY MARCH 24th at 11a.m. in the Welfare Club (Committee to meet at 10-30a.m.) With the Easter weekend falling the following week it is likely the greens may be open from March 29th, although confirmation of this will be determined at the preseason meeting.
In yet another valiant effort to increase membership in our junior ranks I am contemplating an Open Junior Competition in May. With 2 or 3 sponsors on board it may be possible to offer prize money as an incentive to encourage the youngsters of Rossington to enter. More on this idea in next month’s issue but if any firms or businesses are interested in sponsoring a junior bowling competition then please contact the Club Secretary on 867221.

Rossington Councillor’s update - March 2013 ROS JONES, LABOUR’S candidate Armthorpe and Bessacarr, but gain
for the upcoming Mayoral elections has had two goes at canvassing Rossington, but was snowed off both times. The Rossington Councillors are fully supporting her and encourage everyone to vote for her. The current Mayor has done nothing for Doncaster and has made us look a laughing stock. The Mayor’s budget has been changed by Labour to be more caring to the elderly and the disabled. We issued a press release saying what we would change, and he then had to follow suit.
The neighbourhood team and my wife Janet have been pulling out all the stops to get the sensory garden ready for the long awaited spring. It has been hard work, in fact the ground was so hard and compacted we had to get a mini-digger in to soften up the soil. Planting of the many plants has started, and most of the hard landscaping has been completed. Some of the materials from the abandoned ‘Parklands’ play scheme have been reused in the sensory garden, but some of it will be wasted. The money already spent on planning and other things related to that scheme has also been wasted. The reduction in the Area Teams, from 5 to 4 will mean that Steve Thomas, our area manager’s proposed area will change, he will lose

Torne Valley, Edlington, Connisburgh and Denaby and Mexborough. It will be called the South West Area, although it does look, on the map, South west and east! Hopefully it will be a seamless change. The FARRRS link road has not been signed off yet, they are now arguing about a rail line, frustrating. I am assured that it will happen soon as Amazon want their warehouse open by April 2014. Their plan will create 1200 jobs, hopefully a lot of Rossington people getting them. We now have had several meetings in the new Civic Offices and to be honest, I’m not impressed. It may be that it is new and modern, but for instance the desk in the new Council Chamber is not big enough to have two sets of papers on them, the seats are uncomfortable and the screens used for presentations are too small for my eyesight. Well I suppose I’ll get used to it. South Yorkshire Housing Association’s application, part 2, on the play area maintained by Radburn Tara hasn’t got to planning yet. It is due in March and I will speak against it of course, although they have changed their plan to make it better, not good
enough though. The space substituted for the public open space is too small and cramped. As part of my Scrutiny panel, Regeneration and Environment, work I have chaired a committee discussing getting young people into work and the Principal of All Saints Academy, Alan Warboys, has volunteered the school to triall a new program of Careers Guidance. This will come as a teaching pack and it is hoped that this will give Information, Advice and Guidance. I hope this works out well, and may help get square pegs into square holes

Rossington Male Voice Choir WE ARE LOOKING for additional
members to enable us to expand the versatility of the choir. Enthusiasm and an enjoyment of singing are more important than vocal talent although the later would be very welcome! We practice every Wed evening, 7.30-9.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Anyone interested is asked to ring the secretary on 01302 860623.
The choir was asked on 16th January to join family and friends at the funeral of a valued choir member and friend Mr Cecil John (Cis.) Barrow, which we were pleased to do . The family, in a most generous gesture, donated the proceeds of the collection, taken at the church, in excess of £300.00 to the choir funds. We wish to record our appreciation of this and intend to use some of the monies to purchase copies of music which will be dedicated to Cis.

Heather came from Ark & Crafts and brought some of the samples which had been made at the Holmescarr Centre, which included various cards, some pottery, knitted items, etc. Evidently it is almost a year since the library began its operation being run by volunteers, more are needed if you have some time to spare. Why not go along and see what’s happening in Holmescarr, where both the library (with its computers) is available to use and to check out the classes which Heather runs. The next Coffee Morning will be on Thursday 14th March, from 9:15 in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion, finishing at 11:15. We guarantee a warm welcome to anyone who would like to come along.
