welcome WELCOME TO THE NOVEMBER edition of ROSSINGTON TODAY.
By the time you receive this issue the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early delivery - don’t forget to change your clocks early on Sunday 28th October. It is not just the clocks that are changing this month; I am hoping that you will notice a few changes within this months edition. I am very pleased with the results and I hope that it enhances your enjoyment of the magazine. Drop me a line and let me know, not forgetting to tell me what else you would like to see in your community magazine. The next edition will be distributed to you from 24th November. Happyfrom Harvest THANKS ONCE AGAIN for nipping in for a nice hot brew. i love the autumn! i don’t know if it is the nip in the air … the leaves changing colour … or what! i do know it is NOT the shorter days but you can’t have it all, right? Though I realise by the time you receive this, all the “harvest Festival” type activities would have already come and gone. For the last few years, the infant schools have very kindly asked me to be part of their harvest services. It is always a great time. The picture is from Torndale. The children brought in various food items to help celebrate harvest and to share with others who are needy. This is a great tradition that I never experienced in the States. Traditions are great. But with everything like that, there is a down side. Traditions can become … trite, i.e. lose their punch. It is possible that a great thing like harvest time can lose its meaning in the sheer fact that it is something we

do every year. Just for a moment, let’s try and rewind the clock a bit. I think harvest focuses on two things: being thankful and giving. As a Dad, if I can accomplish transferring the power of a thankful and giving heart to my children, then that is a massive thing. I think we could all agree that so much around us is focused on 3 people … me, myself & I. A thankful heart appreciates things … a giving heart shares things. even though “harvest” is over, those are two character qualities that need repeated teaching and example. let’s see if we can raise up a culture of children who are both thankful AND givers!
As always, thanks for reading and if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cuppa, the door is always open.

Rossington Councillor’s update - November 2012 AFTER CONSULTATION WITH
the youth club an application for extra funding has been submitted for a bigger and much more exciting skate park, this will delay the start of building until next spring, but should be much, much better. The kids at the youth club have acted wisely. The linear play area that was to start in October near Parklands Close at the back of St michael’s School has raised some controversy. DmBC got it wrong; we forgot to do the public consultation! DmBC are now consulting with all parties. I now know what a linear play is. This is a small play area with stepping stones and logs to walk on and some contoured grass for the under 5’s. The project is on hold and eventually it will all be sorted. hopefully by the time this is published the FARRRS link road should have started. early work includes doing the biodiversity and environment studies and the archaeology survey; we know there are some ancient burial mounds there so a Time Team type dig will be interesting. holmescarr is now full with 46 staff from the NhS and Adult Social Care moved in upstairs. Getting the derelict parts repaired is now the main priority. For those that need a Warden Service there is one available in Rossington - Care Works Partnership run by Rossington people. Their e-mail address is careworkspartnership@gmail.com The library is going from strength to strength with a better footfall than the old library. Schools are visiting regularly to see some of the exciting exhibits; this week’s is World War 2. volunteers are still wanted, if you need a challenge or just wish to get out of the house please come down and see what we do, it’s not too hard. The Parish Council is providing the funds for the Rossington Bonfire 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY
and firework display and the DmBC staff and the prisoners are supplying the muscle to build and supervise the bonfire. This is being held on the Welfare on monday the 5th November. The bonfire starts at 6.00pm and as usual I expect a splendid fire. The fireworks start at 7.00pm and with a £4,000 display this should go with a bang! There is an entry charge of £2 for adults, £1 for kids and under 5’s free. The Council has had an extra £8,400,000 in cuts which was released with no publicity during the Olympics and subsequently has an extra £1,800,000 hit with the Council Tax freeze. Our Council will not be the Council we know in a few years, there are more cuts to follow and every bit of news on this front is bad. Being english (or British) we just take it on the chin and keep going. George Osborne has a lot to answer for. The Section 106 moneys from helioSlough are hopefully going to be match funded from various sources and we are opening the Doncaster logistics Academy in Rossington at The Welfare learning Centre. This will train local people including young people (NeeTS) so that they can get jobs when it starts. There will be at the first warehouse 1200 permanent
jobs and an extra 800 at Christmas. Plans for proposed PGA golf course are posted in the library and Parish Council notice boards.

Rossington Main F.C. - November 2012 WE MANAGED TO GET our first hOme league win of the season at the fourth attempt when we defeated Grimsby Borough 3-1 (and that after being reduced to 10 men in the 21st. minute). This success followed a deserved midweek draw in Bradford when an injury-time disputed penalty robbed us of another away win. Three consecutive defeats followed, although the matches at Cleethorpes and at home to Dinnington were shaded by the odd goal, before we gained another home victory in the Sheffield Senior Cup with a vastly improved performance, defeating visitors Kiveton Park by 4 goals to 1. With 3 strikers currently ruled out it has been a tough time for manager Steve lodge, and as we fail to take our chances at one end, it is inevitable we are likely to concede at the back. Fortunately we see the end of a glut of midweek games after Oct. 16th, and with just Saturday fixtures scheduled, we may be able to field a more settled side. Our 2nd team have had a very successful start to the season dropping just 5 points (1 defeat and 1 draw) in their opening 7 league games. They begin their Cup exploits on 13th Oct. with a long away trip to “last of the Summer Wine” country where they play holmbridge F.C. in the Sheffield Association Cup. The U.17 side have also begun well with 3 wins from 4 starts, the latest being a 15-0 win over Bentley West end, although sadly I do not personally like to see such one-sided matches at junior level. As usual I can only provide you with the 1st team fixtures for November/early December as other team’s fixtures are produced monthly. Before closing I must mention 2 other issues. The Club hosted a Charity match for local lad Gavin Davies on Sept. 29th and thanks to the efforts of his family, friends and our catering ladies a hugely 20 ROSSINGTON TODAY

AS EXPECTED THERE is very little to report this month with both greens eventually closing following some early October activity when some members continued social bowling whilst the reasonable weather lasted. It is now confirmed that the A team were runners up in the O.60s Singles League and the B team gained the same position in the Tuesday Doubles League. Promotion beckons for both these sides assuming there is the same complement of Clubs for next season. Unfortunately not all Clubs are in the same predicament as ourselves with a gradual increase in playing members, in fact several Clubs are quite the reverse and some have failed to field full teams for a number of League matches this
season, and so their continuation of running more than one team must be somewhat tenuous. We are anticipating some annual maintenance work to be carried out on the greens, with new borders on No.1 green by the start of the 2013 season. At the request of certain members the Club’s AGM has been re-located from the Bowls Pavilion to the Games Room in the Welfare Club (still 11am on Sun. Nov. 4th) this is due to there being no heating on in the pavilion. I dare say some members will now revert to the indoor bowling facilities at Hexthorpe through the winter months but to all I say “stay healthy, enjoy your rest and see you next Easter” “LYiNG GAMe, THAT’s iT”

BUSY START TO NEW SEASON THE PAST MONTH has seen the
start of the Yorkshire 5 rugby season and it has been a busy start to the schedule for the hornets. Following on from the success in pre-season away at local rivals Adwick, Rossington began their 2012/13 campaign away at Stanley looking resplendent in their new kit kindly sponsored by local racking specialists mechantek, a return to the traditional yellow and black hoops. This opening day loss was followed in quick succession by home matches against Sheffield Oaks and Adwick split by an away day at much fancied Doncaster amateurs playing on the main Championship pitch. Although there has not yet been a maiden success this term there have been many close games split by a single try with standout performances by individual hornets including not only a first try, but a brace from Chris Jones in a narrow defeat 19-13 at Garforth and Rob Bostock scoring the only try of the game against Adwick the week before. The hornets are looking to put this blemish right by winning away this weekend at distant Wensleydale in the cup before taking a hard earned break for a couple of weeks from the league and focusing on finding the final ingredient to take them on to increased success. The next time the hornets will take to the welfare ground in anger in the league is against Wibsey on the 17th of October and all are welcome to come and watch from 2pm. You can find further information on the hornets including fixtures, results, match reports and training details athttp://www.pitchero.com/clubs/ rossingtonhornets.

It’s never to late to learn to Swim
They say that 1 in 5 adults cannot swim and that swimming is the only sport that can save your life! So why doesn’t everyone who hasn’t learnt to swim by the time they are adults get themselves off to swimming lessons to learn? I run a private adult swimming school at Bircotes Leisure Centre every Sunday night and have been teaching adult swimmers of all ages and abilities for some considerable time, so I reckon I’ve heard most of the reasons that people come up with. Here’s a few: swimming gets you (and particularly your hair) wet; you have to expose bits of you that you’d rather keep under wraps; it’s probably too late to learn at your age. Some of these things are true: it is very wet in a swimming pool and it is better to swim in a swimming costume than in everyday clothes. As for it being too late to learn, most adults are surprised to find how quickly they can learn. Of course it takes different people different amounts of time, and each person has different aspirations, but to be able to enter the pool and travel around without support should only take a matter of a few lessons. There is one very real fear that many adults have regarding learning to swim, and that is that they will be recognised. I guess this fear attaches itself to the fear of exposing more of your body than you care to share with the public and the embarrassment of admitting you can’t swim. Firstly I can attest to the truth of the rumour that it is very difficult to recognise people with their clothes on. I have been caught out on a number of occasions by people coming up to me and holding long and detailed conversations with me, while I stand there in bewilderment wondering who they are. Secondly, everyone in the class is in exactly the same position as you; they are there to learn to swim and are wearing a swimming costume (and probably won’t recognise you with your clothes on either). In addition, as we hire the whole pool for the lessons, there is no chance that Mark Foster or Sharron Davies will turn up unannounced to upstage you. Remember, swimming is probably the only sport that can save your life as well as being probably the most complete workout for your body. It is also fun. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to enjoy the pool and sea on holiday, go swimming with your kids or simply use the skill to get fit. It’s worth getting wet for. Michael Keeble

Rossington Parish Council - November 2012 THE OKTOBERFEST BEER FESTIVAL was a hugely enjoyable
event with hundreds enjoying the range of 30 different beers, all real ales, and the wide variety of music. This ranged from 60’s music,to Celtic rock, to heavy rock, to grunge punk (?) with a bit of folk music thrown in. Black Sky Paradise band from Rossington opened the show each day and got better and better. We had a Bruce Springsteen tribute band headlining the first day, an Oompah band for Saturday evening (what a night!) and a 60 and 70’s rock band headlining the Sunday slot. The event was well supported by CAmRA, the people of Rossington and elsewhere. I would like to thank Dave and Joe who ran the stage management and PA mixer desk, bar staff, Steve merriman and especially the Parish Councillors George Sheldon, Bill Reynolds and my wife Janet Cooper-holmes who all worked to the limit and beyond. Back to normal business; our October meeting was a bit more exciting than normal with the public exceeding 20, they were in general there to voice their opinion on the proposed toddlers play area near St michael’s School. After using up all 20 minutes of the time allotted they were told that unfortunately it was nothing to do with the Parish Council, but a DmBC matter. A hiccup in the normal efficient system had missed the public consultation; this is now being carried out and the project, small at £14k, put on hold. Some regulars were unfortunately unable to ask questions. The meeting was then told that after the meeting Parish Councillors and members of the public could partake of some beer left over from the festival free of charge. various committee minutes were approved as well as the Code of Conduct for members. This was mainly taken 24 ROSSINGTON TODAY
from the DmBC Code of Conduct. The security of the memorial hall was discussed and a recommendation was put to the management committee that the locks be changed to ones that the keys cannot be copied, some security issues have occurred recently. The Parish Council has set up its’ own Twitter and Facebook site and will use them when the luddite Parish Clerk and Chair learn to use them. The Strategy Committee met and grants were given to the environmental Association, the Royal British legion and to the Scouts. This was towards the cost of new table and chairs. After much discussion it was decided to increase the rent on an allotment from £45 to £47. The Projects Committee met and the Action Plan for the beer festival was circulated and in the end, much to the surprise of many, they were all attained and it was a success as previously reported. The Festival of light was discussed and things were progressing satisfactorily. It was agreed that £4,000 would be the budget for fireworks, and to compensate for the increase a small charge of £2 for adults, £1 for children and kids under 5 would be free. We have been informed that due to the difficult nature of altering the lamp posts we will not be able, this year to put lights on Sheepbridge lane, well that’s one for next year. The Governance Committee met for the first time and agreed the code of conduct that was recommended to the Parish Council. This committee will also act as the Standards Committee for the Parish Council.
The Triple ‘A’ Committee met and had a presentation from Graham Raynor of Graham Raynor Planning & Architectural Designwho described the proposed PGA golf course in detail and the 500 houses that were to be built if this went ahead. This is where I have to eat humble pie, due to some communication issues either by myself with bad hearing and the teller speaking softly, I, unfortunately told the Parish Council that there were to be 20 houses, not the 500 proposed, I apologise unreservedly.

Friends of Brodsworth visit to the Mansion House FRIENDS OF BRODSWORTH
Way We had a small group of eight visit the mansion house at the end of September and would like to extend our sincere thanks to Richard Cooperholmes, who organised it, and to our guide, Frank, who did a brilliant job of passing on the historical information about the building. None of us expected to be there for 2 hours but the time passed really quickly and everyone seemed to have enjoyed it. Our coffee mornings continue, the next one being on Thursday 8th November, from 9.15 am in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion. everyone is welcome to come along, we don’t make a charge but donations are (of course) most welcome. If you are dog walking or taking children to the swings, call in for a chat with us. Our October coffee morning saw 16 attendees so numbers are slowly but surely building. The October P.A.C.T. meeting was held on 8th, with the next one being in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion on Wednesday 14th November, 6.30pm. regards susan(T: 869001)
