Welcome ‘‘
to the OCTOBER 2013
edition of Rossington Today.
As October arrives, I usually have to consider putting away my sandals and pulling on my winter boots. My problem this year, is that I threw away more than one pair of very old boots at the first signs of Spring – my way of ensuring that I would definitely have new ones this year, but now that means I am going to have to make a rare shopping trip and a successful one at that, before ~ Albert Camus I can wear boots this year, and I am beginning to regret that now! I have a feeling that my winter coat situation may be similar – I must learn not to be so ruthless during my spring clearouts! I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there are just 2 more magazines before Christmas now! So if you need to communicate details of Christmas events, or get your Christmas advertising campaign underway then now is the time to contact me. The November magazines will be delivered from 25th October and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 11th October.
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a fl ower.

The Great Outdoors Welcome back to Cause for a Cuppa! I hope you had a great summer. As much as we tend to complain about the weather, I would like to say that the summer of 2013 was brilliant! Didn’t we have gorgeous days the bulk of the time with just enough rain to keep things on the green side? I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy it. If you recall from the last Cause for a Cuppa, we challenged one another to make a memory this summer. In the September issue of Rossington Today, I told you I would share about my summer memory.
Chase (my 9, now nearly 10 year old) has been asking me about camping for ... well, like forever. I knew that if I didn’t look into it at the beginning of the summer, it just would be put on the bottom of the stack. So, we looked around and came across the Outdoor Water Park in Hatfield. I rang up and booked a slot. You never saw anyone so excited about sleeping outside. We

popped round to the nice outdoor shop in Rosso, found a little cooker (on offer), picked up a few other bits and were near enough set. We set out a plan on how to handle the food issue. On the morning of our adventure, we loaded up the car with what I thought we needed. (Never mind I forgot plates, cutlery, football, etc.) We got there and found a hidden jewel. After registering, the task was to set up camp. Did I mention I fetched along our 9 man tent we got 2nd
hand? You should of seen us! I don’t know if you have ever tried to put up something the size of Buckingham Palace, made up of fabric and 85m poles. It was a sight but we did it! We had nearly 3 days of Dad & lad time and it was great! He slept better than I did, wanted to do the cooking and helped up with washing the pots. How about you? I would love to hear of any of your stories. Just because summer is over doesn’t mean memorymaking has to finish. Make a decision to go along to every school function possible. Help them with their homework. Come to Messy Church. Knock together something in the garage. Bake a cake. It pays great dividends. As always if you would like to pop in for a cuppa and chat, the doors are always open.

Rossington Councillor’s update - OCTOBER 2013 FARRRS is finally starting on the 8th October. All the financial agreements have been signed, the objections withdrawn, the compulsory purchase orders have been published and issued and the consultation started. Preliminary work will be ramped up for a rapid start. After 10 years of waiting the link road will be finished in about 18 months or so. From the Pit gates to the motorway in a few minutes! Of course this means that the inland port will be started and the first employer will be setting on 1200 jobs, with more to come. HelioSlough are contracted to give us money to train people from Rossington to work at the inland port. Plans are in place to set off running. And get people trained up a quickly as possible. I think that this can help those who need jobs have realistic chance of getting one. The hub for this will be the Opportunity Centre, and I am sure that Barry will help all he can. Please watch this column to find out a start date. The Boundary Commission have announced that they are ‘minded to’ have either 54 (our cross party submission) or 48 Councillors. Both figures reduce the number of Councillors from 63 at the moment. This is supposed to be an ‘Independent’ commission, but in our very first meeting they announced that status quo was not an option and that the submission from the improvement commissioners would be their starting point. This was put in before this review was announced, so much for ‘Independent’! It is very hard work when the number of Councillors is cut, as I found out when Hilary was ill. Because Rossington is the size 10 10
ROSSINGTON TODAY
it is, with 10,000 voters, we will have to have more people in the Ward from Bessacarr, Cantley or Finningley Camp or have just two Councillors that have an oversized Ward and too many voters to represent.. Please go onto the Boundary Commission Website http://consultation.lgbce.org.uk or by e-Mail to reviews@lgbce.org. uk. This closes on 14th October and I urge you to go to the web site or e-Mail and tell them you want proper representation and that the number of Councillors should be 63!
don’t have a choice. Ros Jones our new Labour Mayor will be consulting on her proposals and you all can have your say. This level of cuts is much more serious than those announced previously; these may very well fundamentally change the Council and as I have said before these cuts are political dogma and its aim is to cripple councils so that they are not coherent bodies that serve the public.
Kindest Regards
The DMBC Area Team let the Parish Council use the Barbeque for the fun day and also supplied the Council’s Assault Course and Blow-up Slide; the team supplied the safety staff and first aiders for the event. The Parish Council lent us the use of their generator. That is real working together. The DMBC Area team will also be supporting the Beer Festival in putting it all together and taking it all down. The budget is well on its way with £38M worth of cuts this year and £109M cuts in the next three years, too much, but we

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees Does this sound familiar? “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’. Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.
“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home. Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.
Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Garden View
The Late Show Good planning and preparation can make this time of year a dramatic moment in the garden, but if you feel your outside space lacks autumn pizzazz, the work for next year’s spectacle begins right now. You still have time to plant late flowering herbaceous perennials and hardy grasses, both of which have beautiful flowers in bloom right now, but aim to do this at the beginning of the month. Experiment with vivid red Helenium such as ‘Rubinzwerg’ which look fantastic when planted in front of the biscuit coloured flower spikes of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, or try the much lower, but no less dramatic double pink flowers of Colchicum ‘Water lily’ towards the front of the border.
another species which offers colour and texture to match this diverse range of plants. As I sit in the autumn garden right now, perched on a cold metal bench, I can admire the wonderful tall arching stems of Stipa gigantea swaying in the gentle breeze. Standing proud since July, this majestic grass will carry on performing until the heavy snow flattens the delicate oat-like flower spikes.
If the subtlety of the grassy flowers are not enough to sustain your need for autumn colour, then try Aster ‘October Skies’ for a splash of late season lilac. The daisy like flowers are produced in abundance over a long period of time, and the great news is that it’s happy growing on dry poor soil in sun or even
part shade. It won’t get much bigger than 45cm tall so doesn’t need staking and the colours seem to intensify as the light levels fall. As we progress further into the month, the bright yellows, oranges and reds synonymous with October, slowly deepen before fading to a muddy brown. As the aroma of decay intensifies, I notice the evening light fades faster of late, as the autumn sun sets on another gardening day. Happy Gardening. T
I would challenge anyone who does not favour grasses to find

Move tender plants in to a heated greenhouse, or pot them on and bring indoors Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs including Alliums, Daffs, Crocus and Iris. Improving dementia care in Doncaster – work with us We all know someone who has or will have some form of memory loss, whether this is diagnosed as being dementia or not. Our aim is to work with local people like you, to provide a better understanding of what it means to live with memory loss: whether this is you, a neighbour, friend or relative. In Doncaster we are developing peer support for people with dementia and their carers, accompanied by our dementia befriending scheme. The aim of both services is to help people achieve a good quality of life and give them the added confidence they need to remain independent in their own home. We are hoping to work with local shops, businesses, clubs, groups and networks, as well as healthcare professionals to increase the awareness of dementia and the role that everyone can play in helping to support our local community. Rossington Parish Council - OCTOBER 2013 Well Autumn is here with a bang, the change from hot to cool has been dramatic. Fortunately St Leger day’s weather was good to us. Our Village Fun day was impressive with a large turnout. This was spoilt a bit by a couple of schools not handing out leaflets that the Parish Council had given them. And this was after an assurance from every school in the village that each child would get one. Anyway, it was a super day and everyone looked to enjoy the events that we had put on. We had some fantastic cooperation from the DMBC Area team who manned two of the blow ups, we had a giant slide and an assault course and from the Rovers coaches who ran coaching sessions and some matches during the day. I would especially like to thank the volunteers and Parish Councillors who helped run the event. We sold about 250 tea coffee and soft drinks and about 200 of burgers and 200 sausages, which reduced the cost to the Parish Council. Everything else was free. The Medieval festival was also excellent, but would have been better supported if a mini tornado hadn’t arrived at 4.30am Sunday morning which blew away a large proportion of the Re-enactors’ and trader’s tents. The field looked a bit sparse, but the show indeed did go on and the re-enactors gave their performances all day without a break. We had to cancel the Music Festival for two reasons, the main one being that the headline act on Saturday night, ‘From The Jam’ pulled out 8 day before the show and left a big hole and the second was that the internet ticket sales and other sales were poor. So the decision was taken to cancel the 18 18
ROSSINGTON TODAY
Festival. It was a very sad moment and not one we took lightly. Jim Beaumont, our Parish Clerk, put in his notice for personal reasons and left on the 8th August and our new Parish Clerk, Barry Chadwick, started on the 22nd August. Two weeks without a clerk makes life difficult for the Chairman! I survived, but only just. The Projects Committee are now planning the Beer Festival at the Welfare; we will have 33 real ales and the usual lager and cider etc. We will also be having Mead, Scrumpy and vintage cider on draft. There will be music from a variety of bands and it starts at 4.00pm Friday 4th October until 11.00pm and continues on Saturday 5th October from 12.00 to 11.00pm. Good quality food will be available all day. Entry is FREE. Hilary McNamee was co-opted onto the Parish Council, replacing Barry Wiggins, who had to finish due to changing work conditions. Hilary will be a great asset and in fact has already done Stirling work manning (or should I say ‘Womaning’) the BBQ with me at the Village Fun day. Welcome Hilary. Others have also left for a variety of reasons; Nuala Fennelly due to overwork now she is the Cabinet member responsible for Children’s Services and Schools, Adrian Pickergill who works for DMBC can’t fit in the time for his difficult role and the Parish Council and finally my wife Janet because she wants to spend more time with our grandkids. I should point out that there is nothing mysterious about these resignations, they are not linked and are just a coincidence.

Creativity begins at Home Rosemary Firth Art classes Doncaster. The classes held at Rosemary’s Bennetthorpe home are still thriving as they begin their third year. Creative people take part in painting, drawing, batik, felt making, print making and many more artistic activities every week. Rosemary used to run her classes from Gallery 12a on Doncaster’s South Parade, but when the lease ran out she decided to continue her classes from home. “At first it was planned as a temporary measure until I found other premises, but it worked so well from home that I didn’t need to look any further” She creates her own batiks,
collagraphs and mixed media work, exhibiting at local exhibitions whenever possible, and recently winning first prize in the Brevonart open exhibition. Most students are total beginners when they start, but they are all made to feel very welcome by the friendly atmosphere and copious refreshments. Some places are now available on most classes. sport A month into the new season and there is a greater air of expectancy following a reasonable start for the 1st team despite an exodus of players prior to the opening game. Our initial win in the League against newcomers Dronfield Town lifted spirits and despite losing at Teversal courtesy of a very dubious penalty decision when leading 1-0, we returned to winning ways with an away victory at Dinnington to amass 6 points in the first week of the season. Unfortunately we then suffered 3 League defeats in quick succession. Typical of our inconsistent form, we then recorded a midweek win over Appleby Frodingham (2-1), and an F.A.Vase victory away at Penistone (3-2). We have acquired several players in the past month. Midfield player Josh Blenkiron joined us from Bentley Colliery, and striker Tom Hyde (ex- Armthorpe Welfare) signed in time for the Teversal game. Since then the squad has been strengthened by the signing of keeper Zak Leivers (ex- Frickley and Retford) and the return of local lads Jordan Hatton and Ben Hunter (from Retford and North Ferriby respectively). Another local lad, Paddy Mullen who was recently released by Doncaster Rovers and unfortunately suffered an injury whilst trialling at Cambridge in pre-season. Although not fully recovered

Wheelers update The clubs mainstream summer time events have now all just about drawn to a close. The AAD Handicap League achieved its most successful season to date with results and titles being ridden for right down to the wire in Round 20. All the results are in but are subject to ratification and will be published more fully at a later date. The final standings in the JE James TT League are also pending where the results from the last two events await official publication, although back of cigarette packet calculations indicate a successful season for all of Rossington’s riders. Tuesday night social rides have now ceased, though the Facebook page is populated with plenty of members looking for company on rides at various
UPDATE to overhaul leaders Bentley we could be pipped for the runners-up spot. Our internal Competition finals will be held this month with Malcolm Needham giving just a single point advantage in handicap to Richard Brooke in the Singles. How’s that?
At the time of writing, there is only one week to go of what could yet be a very successful season for Rossington Cricket Club. The 1st XI sit joint top, a win in their final game at Ackworth would seal promotion and possibly even the title.
The 2nd XI has continued to show copious amounts of potential. Against Bentley they displayed the sort of team spirit that has typified them this season. A side that included five juniors then pushed Bentley very hard before eventually falling just short. The 2nds will look to kick on and show greater consistency in the league next season. Despite a recent good run of results, the Sunday XI has been relegated. Rossington enjoyed a win over Darfield, where Liam Flynn demolished the opposition attack with an unbeaten hundred. Another win over Upper Haugh sparked hopes of escape. Unfortunately victory for Upper Haugh in the reverse fixture consigned them to the Barnsley League Division 3. However the recent improvement in results provides plenty of optimism for next season, where a youthful team will be looking to regroup. The Junior season concluded with our annual August Bank Holiday Monday Junior Tournament was a huge success as the Welfare ground hosted a real carnival of cricket. Rossington, Bawtry,

Mexborough and Haxey competed in frenetic 7 overs a side games. Rossington performed well throughout the day with Lewis Wren, Brendan Parker and Jack Marquis all scoring plenty of runs. Cameron Price was the main danger with the ball as Rossington thrived in the shortened format. Unfortunately the final proved just beyond the hosts, with Bawtry defeating Haxey to lift the cup. Overall it was a great day made so by all the teams, supporters, umpires, sponsors, volunteers and Rossington cricket’s resident DJ. The Rossington under 13’s enjoyed a season with lot’s of sucesses and hope to build on this for 2014 finishing Joint 5th on the table with 24 points. Well done! New for 2014, Rossington Cricket Club Under 9’s. We are looking for juniors interested in playing Cricket! If you are under 9 yrs, we want you to join our team! Lions Club This year’s fundraising bonfire and fireworks extravaganza will be organised jointly with the Tickhill Cricket Club and held on Saturday the 2nd November on the cricket field on Alderson Drive. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with two superb firework shows to follow. The first display will start at 6.00pm with the second after a short interval at approximately 6.45pm. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged, and as ever, all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community and around the world. The Cricket Club bar will of course be open so bringing your own cans etc.. will not be allowed. Novelties and glow sticks will be available for the kids (big and small) and the Cricket Club will be organising a barbeque so don’t have too much tea. This is a family friendly event and whilst noisy, the bangs will not be over the top. The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and remember not to leave the field full of litter – use the bins please! Health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and we would ask everyone to endeavour to walk to the field as there will be no parking in the immediate vicinity.

In December 2012 my family and I, and our many friends, were shocked to get the devastating news that I had cancer. It put an abrupt end to my involvement in Christmas concerts both with Simply Voices, the large Doncaster mixed choir I run with my husband, Stephen Burnage, and with Barnburgh Male Voice Choir, and suddenly normal life was put on hold. Having initially been very well cared for in Doncaster Royal Infirmary, my treatment was taken over by Weston Park Cancer Hospital and a journey of determination began. In May of this year, I was given the wonderful news that the cancer had completely disappeared. Ever since my diagnosis, our family had talked about giving something back by presenting a massed choir concert to raise funds for the Weston Park Cancer Charity. The concert is taking place on Wednesday 16th October at 7.30pm in St Peter in Chains Church, Chequer Road, Doncaster. We are
delighted that three other choirs will be joining Simply Voices on the night: The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers, Barnburgh Village Singers and Barnburgh Male Voice Choir. There will also be items by The Giocoso String Quartet in its debut performance, and other guests. Last but not least, the evening will be compered by Gervase Phinn.
