Welcome to
the APRIL 2014 edition
“You cannot open a book‌ ...without learning somethingâ€? Confucius As a child I was an avid reader, Enid Blyton and Noel Streatfeild being 2 of my favourite authors, but first study and then work, and then a young family and other responsibilities reduced my reading time to the extent that the only time I would pick up a book would be on holiday. But a couple of years ago I resolved to give myself a little more ‘me time’ and part of that included reading. A simple pleasure but one which can be incredibly satisfying, and, depending on the choice of literature, totally enriching and potentially life changing. So whatever genre floats your boat this Easter I challenge you to settle down with a cup of tea and a book or two for company. Open your mind and see where a good book can take you, whether it be learning a new skill or hobby, re-visiting a classic from your youth, honing your detective skills with a crime thriller or just a good old ‘chick-lit’ holiday book! The May issues will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 4th April. Apologies for the early closing date, as you probably know I have 3 school aged children and where possible I like to take time off during their school holidays, so this month I have brought the print date forward a week so I am not at my busiest during their holidays – you never know maybe I will find some time for reading too!
Enjoy April and I will back in a months’ time with your May magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

Shaun Myers - Yesss Electrical Head of Design & Marketing Andy Birdsall - Tickhill Velo Club – Chairman Andy Singleton – Yesss Group Europe – General Manager “Rapid” Rich Stoodley – Tickhill Grand Prix – Organiser The Tickhill Grand Prix on 24th August has joined up with new Electrical giant YESSS ELECTRICAL who will be their title sponsor for at least the next 3 years. The Tickhill Grand Prix is a closed road cycle race through the streets of Tickhill, near Doncaster, (DN11 9PT) and is hot on the heels of the Tour de France. Boasting 8 races, free admission, close to the action spectating, this is a great day for all the family. YESSS ELECTRICAL have stepped in to support the event and see this as a major national promotion as the Race will be attracting professional Riders and Teams from all over the country as well as supporting grassroots Youth Racing. YESSS ELECTRICAL have stormed onto the scene and in just 12 short months have opened over 80 branches across the UK ! Shaun Myers, Head of Design & Marketing at YESSS said, “the Tickhill Grand Prix is an amazing event. We were impressed by the effort and dedication that the organising team at Tickhill Velo Club put into their first event in 2013 and realized the huge potential of this great day “The Tickhill Grand Prix has a similar story to ours, success and growth that has come purely from the efforts and service put in by excellent staff and we had no hesitation in supporting them. YESSS ELECTRICAL are already the 4th biggest Electrical wholesaler in the UK and have already created over 750 new jobs. Their intention is to offer full nation-wide coverage with 280 branches offering unrivalled supplies, service and solutions for their customers. Richard Stoodley from Tickhill Grand Prix said “It is amazing to have attracted such a dynamic, high profile company such as YESSS ELECTRICAL. It may look like a little village but the Tickhill Grand Prix is set to be one of the biggest town centre ‘crit’ style races in the UK, and it is the support of YESSS that has allowed us to fulfill our ambitions.” He continued, “We 8

are thrilled to be associated with YESSS and look forward to putting on a great event” The Tickhill Grand Prix hosts 8 races from 13.00 till 19.45 and these include Professional Elite – both Men & Women - Penny Farthing Race and a host of Amateur & Youth Races. With Big screens, free admission, free programme, after event presentation and plenty to do and see, the Tickhill Grand Prix is a must for your diary. Richard went on to say “British Cycling, Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Police have been very supportive in helping us stage this important event and we are working closely with them to put on a safe event for both Riders and spectators.” But its not just about Racing and promotion, the Tickhill Grand Prix has also agreed a 3 year official partnership with YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE and will see collections and a sponsorship profit share donated to this much needed Charity. Mary Perry from Yorkshire Air Ambulance commented “We were delighted when the Tickhill Grand Prix approached us to become a partner. Cycling is a huge, fast growing sport and with all eyes being on the Tour de France this year, fantastic events like Tickhill Grand Prix will gain Yorkshire Air Ambulance much needed exposure and funds”. Bad news for bus passengers? Those who rely on the passes available to senior citizens and the disabled will no doubt have seen that all concessions above the national minimum have been withdrawn by South Yorkshire PTE as part of their economies. It is a nuisance for the many who have gone out at 9.00 that passes will only be valid from 9.30; no doubt there will be empty buses for half an hour as a result! Probably the loss of the pass on local train services will be felt hard also as buses take an age to reach Meadowhall or Sheffield. However, we also have a problem with Stagecoach service 22. You may remember that, when Doncaster Interchange opened, ours was the only service not to give shoppers the option of getting off at a stop convenient for the town centre. The local management was unsympathetic but the then regional manager knew Doncaster well, listened and service 22 called at Duke Street. There has been a recasting of the timetable since, with resultant poor timekeeping, which threatens the company with fines from the Traffic Commissioners. So what do they do? Not revise the timetable but see if they can cut the route to fit the timetable! The convenience of passengers evidently comes last. Tickhill Town Council has argued our case and at least the route through Tickhill remains as now but Stagecoach still propose to miss out Duke Street and leave all shoppers with the long trudge from the bus station both ways. If you object to this, please write to Customer Services, Stagecoach East Midland, PO Box 15, Deacon Road, Lincoln. LN2 4JB John Hoare

I went to all three and to be honest I haven’t seen such well-acted, strong, roundly written, faultless work in a long while. The play Translations explained clearly why the Irish hate the English, making a microcosm of centuries of unspeakable cruelty in a small Irish village in 1833. Like the best Tragedy it was full of comedy, and the biggest clown was the English Army Captain at whom we laughed so heartily at the beginning only to have him transformed by the end of the play into the Devil incarnate. And I imagine it wasn’t just me, from the laughter in the auditorium, who empathised completely at the young English soldier’s attempt to join in the dancing in the Village ceilidh. The casting was superb. It was Friel who wrote Dancing at Lughnasa which was made into a wonderful film, starring Michael Gambon, Rhys Ifans and improbably as sisters Meryl Streep and Kathy Burke – what inspired casting that was! So from this sublime season to the month of April where you will find The World Snooker Championships, Peppa Pig, Fame and Dirty Dancing. I am saying nothing more. Growing Old
A frightening number of patients are told by health professionals that having to slow down is part of growing older and they are going to have to start putting up with aches and pains. Yet this needn’t be the case. Of course we cannot stop the body from growing older and there will be changes that are part of the normal ageing process. Bones become less dense, muscle strength and flexibility is reduced and there will be evidence of joint ‘wear and tear’. A reduced metabolism may lead to weight gain which in turn exacerbates these problems. The great news is that numerous pieces of research indicate that you can help yourself enormously by combating these changes with physical activity. Regular physical activity will help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce the loss of bone density, strengthen muscles and keep joints flexible. Exercise also means a healthy heart and good circulation with the added benefits of an enhanced mood and a good nights sleep. As with most things, there may be glitches associated with increasing your physical activity – either problems getting started or obstacles to overcome along the way. Physiotherapy can help. Physiotherapists can carry out a musculoskeletal assessment in order to offer you specific and expert advice on exercising and achieving good physical condition. Pain and stiffness associated with common complaints like arthritis, neck and back pain can be treated in order to help you achieve your goals.

Easter trips on the Chesterfield Canal
Gala News
The Chesterfield Canal Trust will be running canal cruises this Easter in Retford and Worksop.
We’d like to encourage all societies, groups and charities who are booking a stall at this year’s gala to consider including an attraction. Tombola, Lucky-dip, guess the number of beans in the jar etc (we have lots of ideas if you’re stuck!) If you can theme an attraction to highlight what you’re all about, so much the better!
On Sunday 13th April, the Seth Ellis will have Easter Egg Hunt cruises from the Hop Pole in Retford (DN22 6UG). All children will get an Easter Egg. Trips will depart on the hour from 12 noon to 4 p.m. All tickets cost £6. Booking is essential, please ring 07925 851569. On Sunday 20th and Monday 21st April, the Hugh Henshall, will be doing trips all day from the Lock Keeper pub in Worksop (S80 1TJ). There will be Easter themed quizzes and a small chocolate gift for the children. Trips will be about one hour. All tickets cost £5. Booking is essential, please ring 01246 477569. T
The aim is to provide as much low-cost entertainment as possible and to ensure that you have ample opportunity to engage with the public (as well as making a few bob for your cause). We know that money is tight for everybody at present and Gala can be an expensive affair for parents, so charges for your attraction should be in the 20-50p bracket, where possible Stall-booking forms are available by e-mailing tickhillgala@yahoo.co.uk or from our Facebook page Tickhill Gala to download, and at KSM in the town. Would you like to help out as a volunteer steward on Gala day? If you’re between 18 and 80 and can offer an hour or more of your time between 8am and 7pm on Saturday July 5th, we’d love to hear from you. Enquiries and bookings tickhillgala@yahoo.co.uk

Tickhill’s own Beauty Queen Michelle Paraskeva was successful in her bid to become the counties top beauty queen, Michelle was crowned ‘Miss South Yorkshire’ at a glittering gala final held at Magna, Rotherham. Michelle is a 24 year old Beauty Therapist who works in her family business Scandalo in Tickhill. She is a multi-talented young lady, she speaks fluent Greek, is a trained Opera singer, a dancer and keep fit fanatic. She received the award ‘Miss Fitness’ after scoring top marks in the competition Boot Camp round. She also participated in a finalists team building day at Magna where she took to the Zip Wire despite a fear of heights. During the competition Michelle was raising money for South Yorkshire based Charity Safe@last and many people in the village kindly sponsored her. Since then, Michelle has done Tickhill proud again when she went up against 71 girls from all over the country in the final of Miss Galaxy England in Lancashire. This was only Michelle’s second ever pageant and many of the girls competing in the National competition were highly experienced so we are delighted that Michelle came 4th out of 71. Michelle said “ I am thrilled to have been placed 4th against so many beautiful girls, since I was crowned The Miss South Yorkshire 2014 it has been a roller coaster, I have been attending functions, making presentations, carrying out charity appearances, all alongside my job and preparing for Miss Galaxy England, it really has been manically busy, but I wouldn’t change a thing as I have loved it so much. Over the next few months I am looking forward to my duties in South Yorkshire before later in the year taking part in the Sahara Trek for Safe@last and then heading off to represent South Yorkshire in the Miss Great Britain Final. I would like to thank Tickhill Today, The Oak, Lotties, Lockwoods, Deli 28, Don Gill and my wonderful Mum and family and friends and all the team at Yorkshire Pageants for all their support” 26

False Labelin In the last article I wrote with the shopping basket I looked at a solution for food waste. In this one I highlight some issues to do with food labelling and local reliability. After the Horsemeat hoo-hah in the Autumn you would think that food manufacturers would have got their house in order, but it seems to be far from the case. The Guardian published some findings from a laboratory in West Yorkshire (8th February). Food testing is the responsibility of local authorities Trading Standards departments. Their findings are alarming. One third of the food they tested was mislabelled. The headline horrors included a herbal slimming tea which was neither herb nor tea, but glucose with an obesity prescription drug, that had been withdrawn due to sideeffects, at 13 times the normal dose, fruit juices containing EU-banned additives, cheese with very little cheese in it, beef mince with pork and poultry in it and the worst, to my mind was a Vodka (not my drink) made from a substance used as an industrial solvent and also found in antifreeze. I bet that would go to your head, and everywhere else besides. The Guardian article didn’t name names, but you can bet your bottom dollar that much of this is in ready-meals produced for sale in supermarkets, where with lots of additional flavouring cheap chicken can be substituted for more expensive ingredients. No horsemeat has appeared in recent tests but plenty of meats are of the wrong species. 28

So try this locally. Do the analysis test. I did in a Tickhill butchers. I asked for the recipe for their pies. They looked at me as if I was going batty, and gently explained to me that there isn’t a recipe. Beef and potato pie, is beef and potato with some seasoning, and the pastry is flour, butter, lard and water. That’s it. With the cuts from central Government many councils have reduced their checks. ‘Which’, the consumer watchdog, claimed that 10% of councils did not check that food was correctly labelled. The only way to be sure that you are eating good quality meals full of wholesome ingredients is to buy the ingredients locally or directly from the business doing the cooking. We are lucky in this area, we have a huge amount of choice. Pies are made in house, sausages are made in house, bread and cakes are produced locally and some fruit and veg can be sourced from local growers. This is not simply the domain of people with a good income. If you visit the blog of Jack Monroe http:// agirlcalledjack.com You will find recipes for meals which cost very little. She, Jack Monroe was a single mum to a toddler when she lost her job with the Fire and Rescue Service and went from earning a very good salary to scraping by on benefits. She
documented her struggles to feed herself and her son on just £10 a week on her blog, along with ingenious and delicious recipes that cost only pennies a portion. The Guardian began featuring her recipes, and she has since become an outspoken voice in the national media calling attention to food poverty in the UK, as well as continuing to write about budget cooking. Her first recipe book, ‘A Girl Called Jack: 100 Delicious Budget Recipes’ has just been published. The Food Programme on Radio 4 (Sunday 2nd March) focused on Butchers’ Shops. They are apparently doing well across the Country seemingly in the wake of the Horsemeat scandal. They are a meeting place, with lots of banter, chat and advice, and the product is often very locally reared, well hung and reliable. Our local butchers will be able to tell you who raised the beef they are serving. And likewise our fishmongers know the provenance of their fish.

The theme this year will be World War I, to tie in with this year's national commemorations. A Church service will be held beforehand, starting at 10.00 am, to which everyone is welcome to attend. February's auction was very successful and raised over £400 which goes towards the upkeep of the Village Hall. We would like to thank everyone who very kindly donated items and also those who attended on the day.
Dear residents of Tickhill... I have recently graduated from Nottingham Trent University studying Building Surveying. While studying there I was tasked with writing a research proposal on listed buildings and how energy efficient they are and how their owners resolve any conflicts when trying to raise their energy efficiency but are held back by legislation. To do this I handed out several questionnaires in the village asking several questions that would help me complete the work. I would just like to say a big thank you to all the people that responded and helped me. The feedback was extremely helpful. Since graduating I am now working as a trainee asbestos surveyor and working my way to more qualifications. If anyone would like to read the research proposal please email me at ashley.white2891@gmail. com and I will send a copy. Thank you, Ashley White 34 TICKHILL TODAY

Scarecrow Festival
Mothers’ Union Our Birthday Celebration of Holy Communion conducted by our vicar Revd. Chris Betson was celebrated by members and some prospective members. This was followed by a meeting and tea party. We will once again be entering a scarecrow for the Festival on April 19th on our Mothers’ Union theme of ‘Growing the Seeds’. Our April meeting on 8th April at 2p.m. in St. Luke’s Chapel will be given by Beryl Wright on a theme that has been much publicised by the Mothers’ Union and the media of ‘Bye Buy Childhood’. This discusses the exploitation of childhood in all its forms. Visitors will be very welcome. Our annual trip on May 13th will be a trip to Beverly and the Minster. Members and friends please add your name to the notice on the Noticeboard in St. Mary’s Church.

Tickhill Brownies go to Disney During February half term 12 Brownies, 6 adults and one young leader had a wonderful 3 days in Disneyland Paris. We travelled on Eurostar, stayed in one of the Disney hotels and enjoyed all of the parks rides and attractions. For many it was the first time they had visited, but all would love to go again! As a young leader it was lovely to see the Brownies enjoying the parades and characters so much. We met Mickey, Minnie, Arial, Mary Poppins and many more. The whole trip was such a lovely experience and I was so pleased to be part of it. Thank you Brown Owl and Katy for organising such a memorable trip, and to the other adults who also came with us, it’s something that all those who went will never forget.
Charlot te Mickley Thanks Charlotte! Our trip to Disneyland would not have been possible without the help and support of many people. So our thanks go to the following groups and people: Taylors of Tickhill and their ‘Making a Difference Locally’ grant; Tickhill & District Lions for their help with our Race Night and donation; Proaktive and Ultimate Bathrooms for their donations; everyone who bought our cakes and drank hot chocolate at the late night opening last November; all the Tickhill businesses who sponsored races for our Race Night and for the people who came on the night; to the parents who trusted us to take their children to a foreign country; and the ones who signed up to Gift Aid to enable us to claim a substantial amount from HMRC. But we’re not finished! In May a group of us will be going to Wetherby Racecourse to attend StarQuest along with over 10,000 other Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Leaders from all over the North East Region. And in June we will be attending the Big Brownie Birthday Bash at Kingswood (The old Earth Centre), Denaby. Plans are also in the pipeline to take the older girls on a weekend camp during the summer holidays. We are also planning a film night and will be working towards the Brownie Traditions Badge after Easter. So once again, THANK YOU, to everybody who has helped us during this very special year of Brownies.

Good news for Landlords on Section 21 Notices
In the recent case of Spencer v Taylor, the Court of Appeal gave a decision that will make it easier and quicker for Landlords to end an Assured Shorthold Tenancy by serving a Section 21 Notice. Previously it was accepted that: (i) A s. 21(1)(b) Notice should be served before or on the day the fixed term of the tenancy ended; and (ii)A s. 21(4)(a) Notice should be served after the fixed term has expired
However, in the above case, the Judge confirmed that a Section 21(1)(b) Notice, giving 2 calendar months notice, can be used before and after the fixed term has ended. This is good news for Landlords as Section 21(1)(b) Notices are much easier to draft than Section 21(4)(a) Notices. Indeed, many Landlords’ claims for possession have failed due to poorly drafted Section 21(4)(a) Notices. Furthermore, using a Section 21(1)(b) Notice will usually entitle a Landlord to recover possession more quickly than a Section 21(4)(a) Notice.

Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan Originally we had hoped that the referendum on the NP would take place in early May. The Plan has passed successfully through the formal publicity phases on the Town and Borough Council websites. Now, however, the relevant government department (Dept of Communities and Local Government) has announced that Neighbourhood Plans which contain the aspirations of the community beyond strict land-use planning (which means things which require planning permission) must be split into two distinct sections. So we are now rearranging our Plan into this format but the policies and aspirations will
remain the same. This month’s report will look at Flooding and Drainage, an issue of real local concern, especially for those with personal memories of the serious inundation of 2007. The Plan contains proposals which relate directly to planning permissions; the creation of hard surfaces, such as car parks, will be monitored with a view to the use of permeable surfaces. It is important that there is no increase in the rate of surface water runoff into the existing drains, which experience has shown are unable to cope. Land management has a part to play here, too, especially as Tickhill stands over an aquifer which
provides drinking water. Beyond strict planning matters, the Plan promotes monitoring of drains and cooperation with the various Risk Management Authorities in an effort to achieve long-term improvements. Likewise there are possibilities of increasing protection in the Lindrick area, of making the Mill Dam more effective when there is heavy rainfall and of improving maintenance of water courses. All these are named and will be supported and promoted by the Plan. John Hoare T

ON SONG A damp and miserable February evening was brightened by Tickhill Music Society when the South African baritone Njabulo Madlala gave the audience some well balanced and wide ranging vocal treats, very ably accompanied by the sensitive playing of pianist William Vann. The rich and powerful baritone voice, which could easily fill a large concert hall or opera house, was appropriately tempered to suit the smaller venue and brought many musical delights. The programme opened with four typically soulful Schubert songs. These were followed by a group of English songs, three by Roger Quilter and the somnolent ‘Sleep’ by Ivor Gurney. The first half closed with three Richard Strauss items, the last one, ‘Morgen’ being particularly well presented. Four evocative songs by Vaughan Williams opened the second half,
including the particular favourite ‘Silent Noon’ with words by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Two languorous French gems by Duparc transported us to a different sound world, demonstrating the singer’s ability to embrace a wide variety of styles. The rich baritone voice was ideal for three American Spirituals, all delivered with fervour and conviction. The published programme rounded off with several

Safety Week at Tickhill Estfeld Each Year in March we hold a “Safety Week”. We focus on all aspects of safety in lessons and assemblies and also invite visitors into school to extend our knowledge and skills. The adults and the pupils always learn something new. During the week our Year 6 pupils also visited the Lifewise Centre at Hellaby for the day to visit the Crucial Crew. They learned about many aspects of personal safety and how to take precautions so that they do not find themselves in dangerous situations. The day is was very informative and the pupils were surprised at how much new information they had learned. We were also pleased to welcome back to school a first aid trainer from St. John Ambulance. Alison Morley worked with all of the pupils in Key Stage 2 teaching them about first aid. Some of our pupils are now on their fourth year of training and their skills and knowledge are being extended and consolidated as the years go by. We are very proud of the fact that we are doing all that we can to teach the children about the importance of first aid and increasing their ability to be able to help others and themselves. Our staff too all refreshed their first aid training just before the half term break. In recognition of the school’s continued commitment to first aid for adults and pupils our school has been awarded the St. John Ambulance Mark, which is proudly displayed on our school letterhead. Another visitor during the week was Amy Simister, the DMBC e-safety officer. Amy was able to advise and inform our pupils on all forms of technology and how to use them safely. The session were interesting and informative – technology is a wonderful thing, when used safely During the week we also focused on the fact that everybody is responsible for their own safety. Taking responsibility, looking for hazards, listening to instructions, thinking ahead – all help us to stay safe.
Look! Listen! Think! – Be Safe! 48

Garden View
Climbing the Walls
If your garden is short on space, rammed with plants, or you simply have an unsightly vertical surface to cover, climbing plants can be used to great effect: from clothing frameworks such as pergolas and arches to hiding sheds and even neighbours! Whether it’s as fast growing as a Triffid, a dainty floral twiner, or an evergreen clinger, I’m certain there’s a climber out there for you, it’s just a case of meeting your perfect match. For those of you lucky enough to have a south-facing doorway, why not spoil yourself with the highly scented fragrance of Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). Not only is it evergreen, but it boasts the added benefit of a claret-red leaf colour in autumn. For those with a north-facing entrance, how about a plant combo starting with an early flowering Clematis tolerant of shade, such as ‘Frances Rivis’, followed by the stunning pink flowers of Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’, perfect in shade with the added bonus of being a thornless variety. If it’s a shady spot and a fast growing evergreen you require you really can’t beat Ivy, but I understand many people are not huge fans, so why not put in the extra effort and seek out a great alternative known as Pileostegia viburnoides. It’s a bit of a mouthful but not only is it evergreen, it will 54

provide white flowers in summer and like Ivy is a self clinger, but nowhere near as vigorous. As well as the other common examples, such as Wisteria (only plant this in full sun and if you are prepared to tie it in and prune it twice annually), Honeysuckle and Pyracantha (great for deterring intruders due to its woody thorns), there is a whole range of other shrubs which can be grown against a wall or fence, not forgetting trees of course, such as the beautiful trained fruit trees we often see in Victorian walled gardens. Shrubs planted at around 30cm away from the base of the wall or fence can be manually tied in and make excellent wall cover, often with the added benefit of flowers. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ for example, or Garrya elliptica make unusual evergreen wall coverings, and look great with a second flowering climber twining through. Don’t forget the huge variety of annuals available which you can grow from seed, such as Sweet Peas, Morning Glory, or maybe try climbing French beans as an edible wall covering? Do ensure that you provide sturdy wires for plants to travel up. The best and most cost-effective way is simply to fix vine eyes (spaced horizontally around 2m apart) to the fence or wall and vertically at 30cm intervals. Then use a taught
network of galvanised wires to provide support. Be sure to tie climbers in horizontally and not vertically as most people do … this way they will look great in your garden rather than flopping over the fence and delighting your neighbour … now that really would drive me up the garden wall!
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

GreenThumb celebrate their 10 Year Anniversary This year GreenThumb Doncaster West are celebrating their 10 year anniversary. Lee and Jayne started GreenThumb Doncaster West franchise back in March 2004. They had seen the impressive results of the GreenThumb treatment at a relatives garden in Cheshire. After making enquiries they found there wasn’t a branch where they lived in Doncaster and so ended up buying a franchise. Ten years on they are still here and now employ 4 lawn treatment operatives and treat over 3000 lawns in and around the Doncaster area. They have built their business on giving good customer service and carrying out the work in a professional manner. This has worked extremely well and they still get many new customers each year from the recommendations of their existing customers. Lee says “We know that the GreenThumb treatments work well and give good results, however we always say it is a partnership between us and the customer – we can apply the treatments but it is then down to the customer to look after their lawn with regular cutting (not too short!) and watering if the weather is dry”.

At our February meeting Peter Young gave a most interesting talk entitled “That’s Your Lot” recounting his experiences as an auctioneer in this area over many years. People’s expectations of the value of objects they took to auction varied widely. He told of a farmer who lived near Bawtry some years ago who said he “wanted at least £10” for some china farm animals which turned out to be worth over £1000. Others with inflated views of the value of their collections were disappointed. A first class evening which was enjoyed by an audience of almost 90 people. Thank you Peter Our latest Occasional Paper “Tickhill in the First World War” by Carol Hill 60

A second print run has been produced and stocks of the paper are now back in KSM Card Gallery, Castlegate. Hopefully our new history book of Tickhill by the same author and due out in September will sell equally well. By the way, if you are thinking of joining the Society March is a good month in which to do it. Your membership fee (£6) will cover membership until September 2015 and as a member you will also qualify for a discount on up to 2 copies of the book we are launching this September.

Many readers will know of Hodsock Priory for its annual display of snowdrops but this will be an opportunity for us to peep behind the public facade and learn more about the house and the family. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome.

Tickhill And District Lions Club Burning down of Rossington W.I. Hall Following the sad loss of the W.I. hall after a fire on 17th January Lions were approached by several of the groups which had lost their base, the Parent and Toddlers Club, the Rainbows and the Girl Guides. Initially we have donated £250 to each of the three groups towards covering the increase in rental costs for a few months following their move to alternative accommodation at the Holmescarr Centre. We are aware that the community spirit of Rossington has resulted in many of the toys and other items lost in the fire being replaced by parents and local residents but we will try to assist with the cost of any important items which may not be covered by insurance.
Rossington Childrens Centre Letters of thanks have been received from many of those families which received food hampers provided by Lions for Christmas.
Type 1 Diabetes The more common strain of diabetes is Type 2 which can be controlled to a great extent by a sensible diet, reducing portion size and eating and drinking the right things. There is however no known cure for Type 1 Diabetes with sufferers living on a knife edge maintaining blood sugar levels and not missing the imperative insulin injections. Gareth Rowbotham, the father of 13 year old Sam, who has Type 1, gave our Welfare Committee a talk detailing the worries of parents and sufferers whilst medical researchers are fighting to come up with means of prevention and cure. This work requires funding and with Gareth having pledged to raise £2,000 each year by running marathons, bi-athlons and tri-athlons we have decided to add a further £500 this year.
Flood Appeal We have donated £250 to the Lions South-West Counties Flood Appeal.
SKRUM - Swaziland Kids Rugby Mission
TICKHILL TODAY
In 2007 he set up the SKRUM charity, with the help of his wife Linda, to combine his two undying passions: rugby and helping to combat an HIV/AIDS endemic which has lowered Swaziland’s life expectancy to just 32 and threatens to wipe out the population. In 2007 Swaziland surpassed Botswana as the country with the world’s highest known rate of HIV/AIDS infection – 42% of the 958,000 population. 31% of all youth were orphans and vulnerable children and it was projected that without bold action these frightening statistics would worsen by up to 25% by 2010. Since then SKRUM’S mission has been to give the school children of Swaziland much-needed education on sex awareness, differentiating between the young and the sexually active, while introducing an element of fun – Rugby. SKRUM will visit 6 schools each week, coaching and educating roughly 60 children at each school in the social skills necessary for healthy and responsible living. The SKRUM programme has now kicked off in more African countries in partnership with HIV/AIDS and health awareness programmes and will visit a further 200 schools and reach 12,000 young rugby players in each country. They will also conduct Rugby Coaching and Officiating Courses at Teacher Training Colleges within each country, training suitable Coach Trainers to assist in promoting the SKRUM programme. With SKRUM needing £200 per school to cover all costs, or £40,000 per country per year funding is important and help has come from players and clubs in the UK and South Africa. We have agreed to provide £500 towards this vital work.
EASTER EGGS
Michael Collinson, a Rossington mining engineer and charismatic leader went out to Swaziland in 1985 and quickly fell in love with the country, its people and the rugby scene. He and his wife decided to stay and he 68
channelled his love and enthusiasm for the game into the Swaziland Rugby Union, becoming its President in 1998. His playing career ended on Boxing Day 2002 when a driving accident resulted in severe injury and his severed spinal cord was beyond repair. Michael is wheelchair bound for the rest of his life but he remains the life and soul of the party.
We have 48 giant Easter Eggs being raffled in pubs, clubs and shops around the district. Many thanks to those of you who have already purchased a number.
