Welcome to the April 2015 edition
April already, and Easter is nearly upon us. Two thirds of the way through the school year and exams are once again looming, only a month to go now, until formal exams start. Two children in my household will be taking exams this year, one doing AS levels and another doing GCSE’s. That also means 2 separate exam results days to look forward to in August! Good luck to everyone reading this with exams on the horizon. We enjoyed celebrating Today Publication’s 10th anniversary during March, and as part of this I stepped outside of my comfort zone and agreed to be a guest on Andrew Isaac’s ‘Doncaster is Great’ radio show on SineFM. A podcast of the hour long show which went out on 18th March may still be available on the SineFM website should anybody wish to have a listen! A kitchen update for you. My new kitchen is due to be delivered the same day as the pallets with these magazines on, by which time the old one will hopefully have been removed. After hours of research, all of my shiny new appliances are also due on various days of the same week. So the fun is about to begin! It is possible that we will be spotted making full use of our range of local restaurants and takeaways over the next few weeks, until the new kitchen is fully operational. More details next month! The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th April.
Helping You to be You Again Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x

TICKHILL NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN We’ve done it! Our Neighbourhood Plan has passed its examination by an Independent Examiner and can proceed to referendum. It has taken 3 years, probably a year longer than it should have, but that has been outside our control. We hope that you haven’t lost interest during this delay. Doncaster’s elections team are rather busy at present so it will be the end of May or beginning of June before the Town Council asks for your support for the Plan. It already has to be taken into account in planning decisions but the exciting work of full implementation will only follow after that ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote in the referendum.
Buttercross Needleworkers The April meetings of the Buttercross Needleworkers begin on 1st April with demonstration showing how to make a Japanese patchwork bag. The second meeting of the month, on the 15th April will explore Seminole patchwork. Meetings begin at 7:30 pm in the Scout Headquarters. Visitors are welcome to join our meetings. T
The examiner congratulated us on the thoroughness of our consultation and on the way we had divided the NP into two parts, Land Use Planning Policies and Accompanying Policies and Proposals, which together cover the wide range of issues and ideas raised by local residents. Most of the examiner’s recommendations can be easily put into the Plan, which will be reprinted when the amendments have been made. It will then be available in its final form on the Town Council website and in printed form in the Library.

St Mary’s School Year 2 at Tickhill St Mary’s have had a very busy time recently taking part in lots of visits.
patients. They discovered how dirty hospitals were and were in dismay at the rats and smell.
On 6th February Clarel and Alderson classes went to Sir Thomas Wharton to take part in multi-skills. The children experienced a variety of sporting activities arranged for them by the GCSE Students. They took part in activities in the sports hall. “Wow it’s huge” they said. All agreed that the bowling was a hit, especially those that got a strike!
World Book Day St Mary’s goes book crazy! Friday 6th March saw everyone at St Mary’s dressing up as their favourite book character to celebrate World Book Day. Characters included Willy Wonka, Katie Morag, Cinderella, Tracy Beaker, Bart Simpson and The Cat in the Hat. The whole school took part in a fancy dress parade (teachers too!) and costumes were judged by Mrs Gadd, add, a school governor. The day was a great success! s!
On a cold and misty 10th February Clarel and Alderson classes went to Conisbrough Castle as part of their topic on castles. We had the castle to ourselves and had an indoor picnic. Whilst at the castle the children were given the opportunity to explore the castle grounds and Keep as well as the new visitor centre. They took part in a workshop introducing them to the people who lived and worked in the castle long ago. The children even got to dress up, but not as the king, that role was left for the teacher! The children learnt about the history of the castle. They spent time looking at the jobs of people who worked in the castle including the role of a ladies maid, the knight, the farmer and they even had to pretend to cook. An enjoyable day was had by all.
So as you can see life in n school continues to be very busy and enjoyable. le. These are the types of things children will remember about their school days. Until next time,
Mrs Jaques.
After a picnic lunch the children went on a walk around the moat. The children were muddy after their walk around the moat but “This is awesome” the children were heard to exclaim. Some children said “I’ve never walked as far, this is really good fun”. On the last day of half term the children went back to Hill House. This time to watch their in house drama competition. Yet again Year 2 enjoyed fantastic hospitality. The biscuits and orange juice proving popular once again. Year 2 Tickhill cheered, applauded and enjoyed the drama presentations by all groups. The children agreed with the judges decisions. After half term Year 2 and Year 1 at St Mary’s had a very special visitor to school, “Florence Nightingale”.”. She visited to tell the children all about her life and the conditions in the hospital at Scutari. The children helped Florence by being nurses and 10

Garden Projects... ...GO! “April is a great month for a garden project “ April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.
Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.
Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.
By Rachel Leverton
Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.

Estfeld School– Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, ReFood
At Estfeld f ld environmentall education d is an important part of our curriculum and we try to encourage everybody to reuse, reduce and recycle.
llorry. He also l won £500 worth of books for school and a tour of the ReFood site for himself and his classmates.
ReFood is a local company that collect waste food from schools, hotels, restaurants and recycle it, turning it into energy. The process is greener than other ways of producing energy and reduces landfill – very important for environment.
In early March ReFood brought the lorry to school. It looked magnificent – Oliver felt very proud of his winning design, and school and Oliver’s parents are very proud of his achievement too. The directors of Refood came to present the prize to Oliver, and all of the pupils were very interested in seeing the winning design. Caroline Flint our local MP also visited, as she is the Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change, so was very interested too.
When we heard that ReFood were launching a competition, we knew that our pupils already knew quite a bit about recycling and would like to know more. So in December 2014, the Year 5 pupils at Estfeld entered the competition. Their task was to design the livery of the ReFood lorry, so that people seeing it pass by would be in no doubt about what ReFood do. In February we were delighted to learn that the winner, out of hundreds of entries, was one of our pupils, Oliver Neale. Oliver’s prize was to have his design enlarged and put onto the side of the ReFood 18
TICKHILL TODAY
Congratulations to Oliver on such a wonderful achievement. Year 5 can’t wait to visit the ReFood site and very shortly our pupils will all be enjoying reading the new books in the school library. Do look out for the ReFood lorry as it passes by – our photos do not really do it justice – and you’ll know if it is the one designed by Oliver, as it has his name and the school name written on the design.

RUN MUM RUN! Parenting brings untold joy. It also brings a rather large amount of stress! Unfortunately, this stress reduces our ability to think clearly, be organised, make good decisions and complete tasks. The good news is that this process can be reversed in just 15 minutes! We know that exercise regulates stress and energy hormones and the benefits of exercise are well documented. BUPA recently conducted a survey to investigate the effects on a specific group – mums! They asked 500 mums to run for 15 minutes a day and compared their responses with 500 non-running mums.
Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE
A massive 79% of mums surveyed said they felt running for 15 minutes a day had made them a better parent. Running mums found it easier to juggle everyday tasks and had more energy. 86% of those who ran said they felt in control of life most of the time compared with just 50% of non-runners. One of the barriers to exercise was time with 1/3 of non running mums saying that they struggled to find time to exercise. However, the mums who ran reported actually spending more quality time with their children which supports the argument that you need to make time to gain time. Looking to the future, your activity levels now will influence your children’s lifestyle choices both now and in the future so 15minutes a day really is a worthwhile investment. It’s unlikely that running is the only exercise to provide such benefits but running is probably the most convenient way for most people to exercise intensely for 15 minutes. So, how about turning the school run into a life changing run?

From the hustle and bustle of Doncaster Market, to the ancient landscape of the Don Gorge and the rural charm of the town’s surrounding villages the works on display celebrate the diversity of our local area as seen through the eyes of artists. Works in the exhibition span a period of almost 300 years, from George’s Vertues engraving of Tickhill Castle from the 1720s up to contemporary views of Doncaster Market. 4th April - 3rd May George Grosz: The Big No. A new Hayward Touring Exhibit on from Southbank Centre London. George Grosz (1893-1959) was one of the greatest satirical artists of the 20th century. A co-founder of the Berlin Dada group and a revolutionary in the 1920s, he made hundreds of drawings depicting the vices and injustices of a society on the brink of economic and moral collapse. Many of Grosz’s drawings were published in portfolios by the left wing publisher Malik-Verlag, and this new Hayward Touring exhibition presents two of the most powerful Ecce Homo 1923 and Hintergrund 1928 (Background). Produced in partnership with The Henry Moore Foundation, the exhibition includes the original drawings that illustrated Jacquetta Hawkes’ seminal book, A Land (1954 edition), and explores Moore’s lifelong curiosity with what lies beneath – from the coalfields and geology of Britain to bones and skeletal structures. Back to a Land also looks at the artist’s radical notion of placing sculpture in the landscape. Monumental works, such as Large Two Forms (1966–69), are displayed in his preferred Country Park setting, against dramatic views and changing skies. The exhibition includes a rare opportunity to see artefacts from the artist’s studios and family collection, curated by his only daughter, Mary Moore www.ysp.co.uk Cupola Gallery exhibition: until 18 April ‘CHINODOXA’ Mixed group exhibition based on the notion of tiny life pushing its way from winter snow to spring. 25 April – 30 May ‘Prints and Plates’ an exhibition showing the diverse processes currently used by contemporary printmakers. Hello Everyone Did you know that Mayflower Sanctuary was established in 2003. We re-home in excess of 500 animals per year. Our vets bills are in excess of £40,000 per year and our electricity bill is £2,000 per quarter to keep all of our residents warm on these horrid cold winter days. We are a charity and I can hear you saying ‘where does this money come from?’ Well it comes from people like you and whatever fund raising events that we are able to arrange. Fund raising alone however is not enough to keep us open. We have always had a reserve fund, we called it our rainy day fund. Well it has been raining quite a lot lately and this fund is dwindling and slipping away. We have never been good at asking for money, however the time has come. If we carry on as we are we will not be here next year, WE ARE DESPERATE. What will happen to all the dogs and cats in our care if we have to close your guess will only be as good as ours. We desperately need donations, we all appreciate times are hard but did you know if everyone that is reading this page gave as little as £2 every month by direct debit that would be a fantastic start to solving our financial problem and we would not be so concerned about our future. Our brand new reception area has been built with money left to us from the late Councillor Granger who recognised our need for somewhere to arrange fund raising evenings, and somewhere for local school and community children to learn about the welfare of dogs and cats. Apart from that this building
Finding a forever home has numerous uses far too many to put in words. He was adamant that we were not to use this legacy for running costs. This was his wish and we hope we can do this justice. We need a new roof on our cattery and if you would like to take a look at our Facebook page we have set up a ‘Raise the Roof Fund’. Also on Facebook we are selling and auctioning items, so please take a look and we hope you will be generous.

Lived with children: Older Kids My name is Lucy and I came to Mayflower with my brother, Mo, when our Mum died leaving us all alone. We were very sad but we knew that she had loved us very much. Her wish was that we wouldn’t be parted so our next home has to be one for us together. I am the more confident of the pair and can usually be found at the front of our pen trying to catch your attention. One of us has to try and get us a new Mum. In the meantime, I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make us wait too long.
We have 2 cats that require expensive dental treatment so again take a look at our Facebook page. This has been a hard page to write this month, but if you would like to donate by direct debit please call me and we will happily send details to you. Or you will find our Bank details on our Website We do have some beautiful animals in our care and still a huge waiting list, if you are considering adopting a dog or cat please come along and see us we will be happy to chat about which dog or cat would suit your lifestyle. Thank you to everyone that came to our psychic evening, it was a huge success. We will be doing this again on the 18th April so pop that in your diaries. Thank you for reading this. It was a sad day when she left Whisky and her buddy, Guinness, behind. Whisky is the more confident of the pair and is soon purring away and asking for cuddles. She has previously been a housecat but would possibly like to explore a secure garden. Although a home together would be perfect as they are best buddies, its not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass them by.

THANK YOU! May I take this opportunity to thank my many friends and associates for the numerous amounts of “get well” cards, so many flowers that I ran out of vases (& my sitting room is awash with the scent of them). Also for the personal visits and ‘phone enquiries during my recent long stay in D.R.I. & Tickhill Road hospitals following my terrible fall on 2nd January. I would give a special mention to the Ministers and Family Members of the Methodist Church for their thoughts and prayers, and for the support given to my husband during that time, and to the Bowling Club Members for their concerns. In the last week or so, I have, with the help of my husband been able to visit the local shops, attend a “coffee morning”, together with 2 group meetings and a Community Lunch, and I have been truly amazed at the number of well-wishers who have approached me to say “How good it is to see me out and about again and back in the community. May I say a BIG THANK YOU to you all for your good wishes. Bettina Gatiss. T

‘Making a difference locally.’ Over the past couple of years I have put together an occasional article on shopping, with a bent towards supporting small local suppliers. My interest is all about maintaining local sustainability and diversity, and keeping here that which is special and particular. This article looks at NISA, the acronym stands for National Independent Supermarkets Association but when it began in 1976 the ‘N’ was for Northern, and its beginnings were very local. The first meeting of the two directors was in the Millstone in Tickhill in 1976. Peter Gavin was a director in a wholesale grocery company in Rotherham and Dudley Ramsden a retailer from Grimsby. They were introduced by a rep for Nestle because they both wanted a cheaper way to buy in bulk and so be able to offer goods at a competitive price to their customers. For 11 years, they ran the NISA business from a meeting room in the Crown Hotel in Bawtry. At its beginning there were 30 retailers turning over £20 million annually. Grocery retailing has always been driven by volume. Buyers would arrive at the Crown to negotiate costs. Orders were handled directly from the retailers and deliveries went directly from the producer to the shop. NISA handled all the paperwork and invoicing, at this stage NISA didn’t touch the goods, it had no warehouse, it just negotiated, ordered and invoiced. NISA is a unique member owned organisation, helping independent retailers remain competitive in the food and drink markets. NISA is now based in Scunthorpe, where there is a strong trading team and the support services that retailers need. The Scunthorpe Central Office was opened by Princess Anne in 1990, along with grocery central warehouse and distribution facility. This stocks 12,000 products, including 3,000 chilled and frozen lines. Today NISA represents over 1134 registered shareholders operating over 2,500 stores, including 270 former Costcutter retailers, worth over £100 million who joined the group in 2012. NISA does not own any stores itself. All their shareholders retain their independent status. They benefit from the group’s products and services whilst maintaining full control of their stores. Nisa recently announced that it had appointed former Tesco and Aldi director, Nick Read, as its new chief executive. We tend to take for granted long established organisations, now very much a central part of Tickhill’s townscape, Taylors of Tickhill is a NISA store, and was involved with NISA from its beginning. Taylors business grew from modest beginnings - Os and Bessie Taylor together with their two small boys, a family with no capital, took over the lease on a beer-off in 1946. The building, the right hand side of the present property, was a condemned 3 storey slum with no mod cons. A butchers shop occupied the 42
TICKHILL TODAY
left hand side. Mappins and then Stones Brewery owned the building and some repairs were made, the top floor removed, and only when fit for habitation did the family move into the property, but for many years the toilet was down the yard, the family living in the shop, on the ground and first floors. Both Os and Bessie were born in Tickhill. At 14 years old, Os worked at Firbeck Colliery yard taking the wagon numbers, and was later a porter at Tickhill Station. His mode of transport was a push bike, and he would cycle out to Westwoodside for a 6.30 am start to load celery into wagons there. Coincidentally, Bessie’s father had been the licensee of the Millstone pub 1930s which is where NISA was conceived Os and Bessie took over the lease in 1946, but Os continued to work on the railways for another two years before he felt that Taylors had built up enough to join Bessie in the business. The first days takings, as recorded in their ledger was £1. 10s. ( £1.50). The hours were long and late, as it is with the alcohol trade. They had been in business ten years when they took the opportunity to buy the premises that Taylors of Tickhill now occupies. They knocked the two shops into one, and in 1962 introduced the very new self–service method of shopping. When we moved to this area in 1991 Os and Bessie were still very much present in the store, Bessie on the till adding up in her head faster than the till itself. Roy joined the business 1956. When Peter Gavin met Dudley Ramsden in the Millstone in 1976, Roy was chairman of Gavin’s wholesale business (which was called Escafeld ). Taylors was one of the first stores to be part of NISA. In 1981 Christopher joined the business, and regular shoppers will know this as a family business with Celia and Julie also very much present. The member-owned status of NISA means the member always benefits, particularly through the day-to-day trading terms and surplus profits that are reinvested back into the company. NISA’s turnover is £1 ½ Billion, enormous as this sounds it represents only 2% of the UK grocery market. Aldi owns 5% of the UK market. Every three weeks NISA launches a new raft of offers, discounts, BOGOFFs are launched with about 300 product changes on promotions. Incidentally this takes one day to set up on the Taylor’s computers in order for the till to know what is going on and the customer to reap the benefit. In 2008 ‘The Making A Difference Locally’ charity was launched assisting more than 2,000 retailers in donating money to local charities and good causes in their communities –Taylors of Tickhill have donated £3,450 in Tickhill and NISA has distributed £6.5million nationally. Incidentally Ramsden’s family supermarket in Grimsby has recently celebrated 70 years in business, and Taylors will be doing the same next year. A while ago I ran into a friend as I came out of Taylors, he said ‘We can’t afford to shop there’, my reply was ‘ I can’t afford not to’.

What is it? Michael Pocock, CEH
The National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS) is organised and funded by BSBI, CEH, JNCC and Plantlife. The aim is to collect data to provide an annual indication of changes in plant abundance and diversity.
Why is it needed? Michael Pocock, CEH
Thanks to volunteers, we have a very good understanding of changes in the populations of birds, butterflies and bats. Plants are the foundations of ecosystems, but currently we do not have a good measure of changes in plant populations.
How will it work? Michael Pocock, CEH
This is a scientific survey, so you will be randomly allocated a convenient 1km square to visit. The visit involves recording plant ‘indicator species’ in plots. Within your 1km square you will record around 5 plots.
Who can take part? Michael Pocock, CEH
Anyone interested in nature who can identify plants, or who is keen to learn. Different levels of participation ensure that all who are keen can participate: you do not have to be an experienced botanist. There will be training materials provided and the opportunity to attend workshops throughout the year.

Ofsted visited our new Academy for the first time in January 2015. The process was thorough and fair. Their report reflects the many strengths of the college and the areas requiring rapid improvement. However a significant dip in 2014 GCSE outcomes, especially around progress, has contributed to a judgement of ‘serious weaknesses’. This hurts. And although the front page of the report is negative the rest of it doesn’t read like a failing school. And we are not. There are too many positives. We have made many changes since September 2014 and importantly the inspectors have confidence in our progress and leadership. I hope that our students, parents and community will share this confidence and work with us on our journey to become outstanding. We have set up a strong partnership with senior staff from Hungerhill School, an outstanding and prospective teaching school, and we will accept and embrace the radical changes that will improve our teaching and achievement. At the time of writing this I have just returned from a Student Voice meeting. I felt very humbled and proud of our student’s passionate defence of our college community and especially of their teachers and staff. They are clearly upset by the inference that we are an inadequate school and are frustrated that Ofsted does not take in to account the many good things that happen within our family (their word). I explained to them how achievement is a limiting factor in the judgement and that we do indeed need to teach them more effectively to enable them to attain the
progress and exam results they are capable of. They accepted this and believe things have already improved this year. They were appalled by the press headlines and have put together their own thoughts on their college which they asked to be communicated through the media. These are reflected in the statement below from Kirsty Nelthorpe, a member of our Student Voice. We are very proud of our students and they deserve our best efforts and support. Keith Binks Headteacher
I am a year 11 student, currently about to sit my GCSE’s. I’ve been here 5 years and seen the college ethos change dramatically. When I read the Ofsted report I felt the heart had been ripped out of our college family. I feel that the report did not show a true reflection of our college as a whole. Our transition for year six to seven is second to none. Our teachers and support staff work hard to support us and I feel this hasn’t been reflected truthfully. If the parents of our current year 6’s are reading this I would want to let them know that the talent, enthusiasm and progress that our college has made over the past several years is not just down to the students but the wonderful staff that work here. “You get out what you put in; if you work hard you will succeed”. Kirsty Nelthorpe, aged 16.

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, There is a story of a black South African woman who stood in an emotionally charged courtroom listening to white police officers acknowledge the atrocities they had perpetrated in the name of apartheid. Officer van de Broek accepted that he was guilty for the death of her son. He and his police friends had shot her eighteen-year-old son at point-blank range. They partied while they burned his body, turning it over on the fire until it was ashes. Eight years later, this same policeman and his friends arrived to seize her husband. Hours later, van de Broek came to fetch the woman. He took her to a woodpile where her husband lay bound. She was forced to watch as they poured petrol over his body and ignited the flames that consumed his body. The last words her husband said were “Forgive them.” As van de Broek stood awaiting judgement, the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked the woman what she wanted. The woman stated, “Mr. van de Broek took all my family away from me, and I still have a lot of love to give. Twice a month, I would like for him to come to the ghetto and spend a day with me so I can be a mother to him.” That was not all. She added, “I would like Mr. van de Broek to know that he is forgiven by God and that I forgive him, too. I would like someone to lead me to where he is seated so I can embrace him and he can know my forgiveness is real.” As the elderly woman was led across the courtroom, van de Broek fainted. The story of Good Friday rings a bell in this story. Jesus was tortured and crucified amongst two thieves. Whiles dying on the cross, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23: 34). I wonder who has offended you and how you’re dealing with the situation. Yes, humanly speaking, you want to break even with the person but what happens afterwards may be devastating. Other people would want to keep the hurt in themselves and bear the brunt of anger and hatred. That is not the spirit of the Easter season. At Easter, Christians believe that God in the form of his Son Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead after the third day. Through that we are liberated from sin and all its clutches. We are forgiven when we confess and repent from our shortcomings. We can therefore come to God and ask him to help us forgive those who have offended us. We can also ask him to help us ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. As you celebrate Easter, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider reconciling with people who have offended you in the past so that you may have the peace you need in your life. Have a blessed Easter season.

ROWING FOR GOLD Sarah Beevers a 15 year old school girl from Tickhill who attends the All Saints Academy in Rossington competed against 75 other year 10 girls at the Olympic Velodrome Centre, London on February 8 at the British indoor rowing championships. She not only won the gold medal but she absolutely smashed the existing record of 1407 metres for a 5 minute row by completing a 1434 metre row in 5 minutes. Sarah is a member of the Doncaster Rowing Club at Hexthorpe. Her mum Julie said “I was so excited, it was an extraordinary day I’m so proud of her. We met the British Rowing team and Sarah had her photo taken with Mathew Pinsent, it was so surreal”. Julie went on to say “at 6’ 2” and overweight Sarah stood out in a crowd and you know how unkind teenagers can be. I attend the Tickhill Slimming World group and having lost over 5 stone myself decided to take Sarah along with me”. Slimming World is the only weight loss organisation that will help children aged 11-15 and as long as a fee paying parent or guardian attends it is completely free of charge. The programme they use for children is called free to go and it’s about encouraging children to change their eating habits by swapping their high fat, high sugar snacks for a healthier choice. To date Sarah has lost over 2 stone and she says “this has really helped my rowing, before I lost weight I found I didn’t have enough stamina & my breathing wasn’t controlled, now I have lost the weight I find it much easier”. Doncaster is the 2nd highest obesity hotspot in England, Childhood obesity is on the increase as is adult obesity. If you would like to find out more about Slimming World’s Free to go programme for children or if you are interested yourself about joining Tickhill Slimming World group call Christine on 07825 686 437 or alternatively pop along any Thursday to the Parish room, Tickhill 5:30pm & 7:30pm. Christine runs Slimming World groups at Tickhill Parish Room, Thursday 5:30pm & 7:30pm & Maltby Manor Hotel, Monday 7:30pm. T 60 TICKHILL TODAY

Tickhill Horticultural Society Our February speaker Anna Evans was more used to an audience of 20 rather than the 90 odd filling the Methodist Schoolroom, but she coped admirably, demonstrating a sound knowledge of all aspects of ‘Willow in Nottinghamshire’ We welcomed 5 new members, and with 87 subscriptions already renewed we are off to a good start to 2015. On the last day of April, Michael Walker will be coming over from Scunthorpe to put us right on ‘Growing Tomatoes at Home’ and he will be selling plants. This should be another popular evening, starting promptly at 7.15pm. Visitors welcome (£3).

Tickhill & District Footpath Group Long Service: At the recent AGM Margaret Marrison stepped down as Chair of the Group after 25 years of devoted service. Tribute was paid to Margaret’s unstinting efforts on behalf of the footpath Group. As a token of the members’ appreciation, flowers were presents to her by Betty Kitching and an original painting of the Parish Room was presented to her by Eileen McElrue. New Seat: A new seat has been purchased by the Tickhill & District Footpath Group and has been erected at the junction of Water Lane and Whinny Haugh Lane. Thanks must go to members of Tickhill Town Council and the DMBC community team for the installation of the seat. It is hoped that the seat will provide welcome respite for all the many people who enjoy walking in this part of Tickhill. Pictured are members of the Footpath Group showing their appreciation of the new seat on the way home from a walk to Harworth and Styrrup. Litter: The Tickhill and Footpath Group have been doing an annual litter pick on Sheepwash Lane for several years now. Sheepwash Lane is one of the worst tracks in the parish for litter. There is plenty of parking space at the Stripe road end for cars, the occupants of some of them having no qualms about tossing their litter out. Also, with the ability to drive in at one end and out at the other, it appears to be a good place for commercial litter to be dumped. This year’s litter pick was a record for the worst of reasons. In 5 hours of work over 20 bags were filled with rubbish, from only the first 100 yards of the lane. The photos provide a graphic illustration of the serious problem of litter in the lanes around Tickhill. T 64 TICKHILL TODAY

Tickhill . . . but not TODAY At our February meeting Tony Barber gave a fascinating account of the history of the St Leger, Britain’s oldest classic flat race. He spoke not only of the racing but also about the politics behind the event over the years. A fascinating tale, told completely without notes and with a great deal of humour. Thank you Tony for a most interesting evening. The Society has just published a new Occasional Paper - on the Fitzwilliam Tomb in St Mary’s Church, written by Hazel Horrigan. This too is a fascinating story of a local family’s links with the Court of Henry VIII, what an analysis of the four skeletons in the tomb revealed and how a finely carved tomb came to St Mary’s, was moved three times, damaged during local upheavals in the 16th and 17th centuries and recently 66

conserved. The Paper is on sale at KSM for £2 and profits will go to the upkeep of St Mary’s historic fabric. Now an apology. In the March edition of Tickhill Today I gave details of our “next” meeting on 16th April, missing out details of our March meeting altogether. So far nobody has mentioned the mistake to me which means that either nobody reads this piece or people don’t want to hurt my feelings! At the risk of repeating myself our next meeting (REALLY!) will be on April 16th when Albert Smith will talk on “The History of Mystery”, a history of magic throughout the ages. As usual the talk will be in the Methodist Schoolroom Northgate, starting at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome.

Tickhill Cricket Club TICKHILL BOWLING CLUB Here we are (at last) at the start of our new season. The green on Tithe Lane will open on the weekend of the 28/29th March and we are all, I am sure, looking forward to our social and competition days. Our two singles teams each won promotion during the hard fought league competitions last year and so this year they will have an even tougher time as they try to attain top place again. Our Wednesday afternoon doubles team missed promotion by a whisker and, I am sure, that they will redouble their efforts this year. Our Tuesday evening doubles team did less well but will improve their performance this year. In addition to our league competitions, the Club has decided to enter the Hospital, Brooke Farm and Bufton cup competitions so we will have (hopefully) a long competitive season But it is not all about competitions, the Club enjoys a great social calendar with social bowling taking place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons when anyone who would like to try their hand at this great sport is made very welcome. In addition, we are planning to run “Pot Luck” events every other Friday evening where lots are drawn for partners. Looking further into the year, the Club will open the green in support of the Free Big Lunch event on the 31st May and Gala Day on the 4th July where you can try your hand. The following dates should be entered in your diary: 1. Club (Fun) day will be held on Sunday 28th June, 2. Finals Day on Sunday 6th September (to include presentation etc as per 2014) 3. This year’s AGM will be held on Monday 23rd November. More information about the Club can be obtained via the Tickhill News page of the Town Council’s web site www.tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk

A Percussive Evening For the average concert-goer, an evening of percussion could easily be a daunting prospect. Rhys Matthews (marimba and African drum) and Tim Abel (piano) soon dispelled any such thoughts at Tickhill Music Society. From the opening Black and White Rag, to the gypsy rhythms of the closing Czardas, the audience was gripped by the virtuosity and vigour of the two performers. There was much to learn and admire. We learned that percussion can take many forms – not just the beating of a stick on a resonant surface, but clapping, finger–snapping, foot–tapping, and even percussive vocals. While there is little original music for the marimba this is no disadvantage as the music of other ages and other instruments was arranged so skilfully as to seem a natural fit, whether it was written by Mozart for the piano or by Kabalevsky for full orchestra. And the marimba is capable of soft limpid tones as well as exuberance. What made this a special evening was the charm and enthusiasm of the two players, allied to their obvious skill and musicianship. It is sure to live on in the memory of all who attended.

Tickhill Town Council - APRIL 2015
The last month has seen a lot of tidying up of various Council matters and the following information may be useful to you: The last month has seen a lot of tidying up of various Council matters and the following information may be useful to you: The Community Asset register is well on the way to being finalised and The Neighbourhood Plan is now on its way too. A lot of hard work has gone into both of these documents in the hope of preserving Tickhill as a sustainable Community. The ever-increasing costs of new housing and those of moving home have contributed to the increasing numbers of families improving/extending their homes and this very often requires planning permission. This Council spends much time in very carefully considering all planning applications (small as well as large) to try to ensure that the ethos of Tickhill is preserved. Hopefully the Neighbourhood Plan will have an impact on the final decisions made. The Financial year end is now upon us and I will have much work to do in preparing the accounts and day to day books for the internal and external auditors. The Council’s finances remain well balanced and have provided for full redecoration and some improvements of the Sports Pavilion at Tithes Lane. It is always a busy time of year for the clerk so please be patient if I do not answer e-mails immediately. May is “Election” month and hopefully new faces and ideas will appear on the council to help with the issues as they arise. I look forward to helping the new councillors settle in and deal with these matters. 70

The Neighbourhood Team will also see a change and yet again I sincerely hope we still have the help of Steve and Julie who assist in the community; our thanks are extended to them Mark Benton who is the leader of the Enviro Crime team is to be thanked for helping organise his team of “Unpaid” workers clear the Crooked Lane Head area after vandals once again caused so much damage to the Tickhill Juniors Football building and deposited the debris down the railway embankment. Mentions of Spring seem a little premature at the time of writing this newsletter – but we live in hope! Nevertheless the initial signs are evident in the flower beds and lawns and once again Tickhill Council will be supporting the Tickhill in Bloom group to provide their superb displays on the roadside approaches into the town and at the Buttercross. Orders have been placed for this year’s Summer plants which will be planted out at the end of May. Before then we should reap the full benefit from the beds of Winter plants - when Spring really does arrive. Our thanks go to all the volunteers who raise money to purchase the plants and then plant them out and maintain the beds throughout the Summer. Thoughts are now turning to Summer activities and both Tickhill Bowling Club and Tickhill Tennis Club start their seasons at the Tithes Lane Recreation Ground at the end of March. We know the Clubs always welcome new members and we hope they have successful seasons and are blessed with good weather.
