Charles Dickens Officially Spring is here and looking around it would seem that nature agrees. At the time of writing it is wet and windy, but my garden is filled with the promise of the spring to come with daffodils in bloom (in fact they are past their best) and the buds of new growth everywhere. The delivery window for this magazine includes both Mother’s Day and the start of British Summer Time, lighter nights and longer days are on the way. Springtime often starts people thinking about their homes, whether it is for a traditional spring clean or more drastic changes. If you are planning home or garden improvements this Spring and Summer you will find a huge range of people to help you within the pages of this magazine. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give them a call. The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th April. No doubt the May magazines will bring the start of Spring and Summer fairs and summertime events, don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you are planning an event this year. Enjoy Easter and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.
Best wishes,

Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium Diggles Lodge Lane, Ranby, Retford DN22 8QJ
You’ve potentially made the difficult decision as to whether or not you will be buried or cremated – if it’s a cremation, what should you or your family now be looking at in terms of ensuring that you select the right crematorium? If you want an experience that your loved ones will remember for all the right reasons, then you should be looking towards the new Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium. WHY? Who better to look after you than a facility that is family owned, with our directors having over 90 years collective experience in the funeral sector — as a result we’re totally committed to providing exceptional standards of service to the bereaved families that use our facilities. Our mission statement is about doing just that - clearly others think we do too, as in 2017 Memoria’s South Oxfordshire Crematorium & Memorial Park was named as ‘Best Crematorium in the UK’ at the Good Funeral Awards with our other seven sites all featuring in the top ten!
In early February, Memoria opened its newest crematorium at Barnby Moor, serving directly the communities of Doncaster, Bawtry and surrounding areas. So, what can you expect? Unlike most crematoria who offer just 40 minute or even half an hour services, as a market leader we provide as a basic service element, a full one-hour service time. This is so families are not then caught-up in a constant conveyor belt type scenario whereby they see other mourners either departing as they arrive or when they depart themselves the next funeral cortege is already in view — this in our opinion isn’t conducive to a positive experience. These 60 minutes guarantee time for the bereaved to adequately celebrate and remember their loved one, peruse floral tributes and chat with friends at their leisure without the added pressure of feeling they have to vacate the site once the service or ceremony is over.
THE AMBIANCE OF THE SITE IS FURTHER COMPLIMENTED BY: • A Service Chapel with a capacity for over 100 seats • Dedicated clergy facilities • Extensive Memorial gardens for cremated remains • Well laid out car parking with safe access • Disabled access and hearing loop • Comfortable soft furnishings with a neutral soft colour scheme. • Choice of advanced music system or live organ • Web camera with live streaming capabilities for those friends and family who may be unable to attend • Plasma television screens for photo dedication/eulogy’s • All set in a beautiful tranquil countryside environment with stunning water features & extensive gardens. • Wesley Music system with an almost infinite music library to cater for all requests. • Uniquely for the area our grounds also include a dedicated section for traditional burials. Please ask your local Funeral Director for further information or if you are able please drop in for a chat, our staff will be only too pleased to show you the facilities we have on-site.

We met in the Parish Room and discussed our visits to the Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry to see 'Holiday Snaps', and the Jazz Night held in Worksop, the screening of the Ballet, Sleeping Beauty performed by the Bolshoi Ballet from their Moscow Theatre and the Halle concert from Sheffield City Hall, all of which had proved to be very enjoyable and worthwhile visits. Our planned visits for April will be a screening of the musical 'The King and I' at the Savoy at Worksop on the 4th and 'Calendar Girls' at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield on the 10th. We also discussed another visit to the Phoenix Theatre, Bawtry in May to see 'Relatively Speaking' but a discussion regarding the date to take place at our next meeting. Our next meeting will take place at CASTLE CLOSE COMMUNITY CENTRE on THURSDAY, 4TH APRIL at 10.00 AM. [Please note, change of venue and change of date and time].

Another month has gone by and the racing season has well and truly started for Bircotes Swimming club. At the start of the month, we took a few teams to the County Relay races, where the best swimming clubs from the whole of the Nottinghamshire area compete against each other. This is a team event rather than individual races, and it was great to see how our swimmers worked well together and were totally inclusive of all swimmers, young and old. All children had a fantastic day. As our club is quite small, a lot of our swimmers had to compete in races for swimmers 2 or 3 years older than their actual age. Despite that, they made us very proud. We didn’t come home with any medals this year but have shown we are worthy of a place in the competition. Only 2 weeks after the County relays we took part in the Doncaster Dartes gala at Adwick. It was the first time in the history of our club that we paid a visit to our neighbouring town. We were made to feel very welcome and it was a great meet. A total of 17 of our swimmers took part in this competition and the results were amazing. Lots of personal bests and speeding tickets were achieved, which is great this early on in the racing year, one of our swimmers, Elin finished 4th out of 25 in her age category, another, Abi finished 5th out of 33 in her age group and William finished 8th out of
21 in his. Our swimmers are well and truly placing Bircotes Swimming Club on the swimming map. By the time this goes to print we will have held our 3rd Club Championships, which is closely followed by a swimming gala at Mansfield, so no time to rest here! Early in May our swimmers will be able to celebrate their fabulous achievements at our annual presentation night, which is always a great night with plenty of food, music and laughter. We can’t wait for that one! At the annual presentation night, there is a raffle which raises money for the club. We have some very special prizes lined up already, but if any local companies would be willing to sponsor a prize, please contact Mieke on bircotesswimclubchairperson@gmail.com We would be very grateful. Many thanks. T

In the Old Testament days, a tattoo was a permanent mark and would never disappear. In other words, God is saying to you that you may feel insignificant, unloved, lonely, etc. but in God’s eyes, you are important, very important. There are times in our life situations that we feel like being forsaken. As a Minister, I have heard it many times when people ask the question, “where was God when …” It is okay to feel forsaken especially when you feel or think that the situation in which you find yourself is not your fault. However, I wonder if in your accusations or complaints, you have given God a chance to respond. The following was God’s response to the Israelites (Isaiah 49 15 – 16): “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.

Like Christmas and Valentine, Mothering Sunday has become a commercial issue in the western world. I am not saying that we should not be grateful to our mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and so on. They are very important part of our family lives. However, for some people, Mothering Sunday is a difficult time in their lives especially when they have been through rough times by not having a mother figure in their lives. Sometimes, going through life situations can be like not having a mother figure in your life – forgotten, lonely, unloved, rejected, unprotected, forsaken, frustrated, and so on. But God has an answer for you in your questions – your mother may have forgotten about you, but I will not think of forgetting you. His reason is that he has tattooed you on his palms.

Looking back to step forward
Think about the beliefs you hold strongest about yourself, are they actually accurate?
and not yours that you hear.
Often when coaching people I hear sentences such as “someone like me couldn’t do this/that” or other self-limiting beliefs.
You failed to build a business = I can never build a business. Opinion or fact?
They never even began to fulfil their full potential simply because they never saw the point in even starting, after all, they were bound to fail. Commonly it’s a specific event, conversation or experience that lead them to this opinion that they now hold as a fact forever. They were told by someone they trusted they weren’t smart enough, pretty enough or perhaps they themselves attempted a goal and fell short. This negative experience is then taken as an immovable fact. Interestingly, if the negative experience did involve another person, listen to your thoughts, often you may notice it’s their voice
14
Most of the time, it isn’t about what happened to us, it’s how we view what happened to us and what we feel that says about us that counts.
You failed to get in great shape = It’s impossible for me to ever be fit and healthy. Opinion or fact? People will laugh if I try and fail = I can never make another attempt. Opinion or fact? Every outcome in your life will be a result of the actions you take, change your actions to change your results. Of course, it’s not easy. Sometimes we may need to seek help in putting the past events behind us, I’m not in your shoes. But we all have a story to tell, it’d be such a shame if yours was less than it could be at the end of it all simply because you allowed someone or something to dissuade you. Even accepting that you are in the
driving seat and you can create new results in whatever area of your life you choose is very powerful…hope! The World is jam packed full of rags to riches, failure to success and the impossible becoming possible. Why not you? Why not now? Every one of them started as an “ordinary” person. They simply focused on controlling the now, altering their self-perception and letting the results flow. I hope you find some time to reflect on what’s holding you back from what you truly want, you may find a simple answer that you can then do something about. Go create a day and life that counts, always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!

On Wednesday April 3rd we shall be entertained by the Yorkshire plants woman, Sarah Hopps, who will give an illustrated talk on "The Gardens of France". As well as running her own nursery, Sarah leads guided tours to gardens abroad. She will also set up a stall of her own spring produce, so come prepared to purchase beautiful plants! Just before this talk, we shall hold a brief AGM (brought forward from May), in order to elect a new Treasurer and Secretary and to re-elect a Chairperson and Vice-Chair. Monty Male 8 Years Feb 2019 Possibly No Older
Monty’s owner moved and cruelly left him behind to fend for himself on the streets. Luckily a neighbour recognised him scavenging for a meal in the bins and took him in. She has been taking care of him for a while now but unfortunately has to move and isn’t able to take him with her. Not wanting to leave him behind to a uncertain future, she contacted Mayflower for help. So here he is looking for a new home. Monty is an independent little chap who is very fussy but likes it to be on his own terms. He is happy to come to you for fusses but doesn’t like to be picked up or cuddled. As a former stray he has obviously been outside so would probably be happiest with a secure garden to explore away from busy roads for his safety. We are unsure how he will react to dogs but he certainly wont appreciate living with another cat I’m afraid. Don’t pass him by, call him and I’m sure he will come running out to greet you.
Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:
Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes
Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

STEP INTO SPRING!
T
Spring is the season of new beginnings. From warmer weather and longer days to flowers blooming and the budding of leaves, there is no better time to have a fresh start and a good old de-clutter. Here at the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, our charity shops are a vital source of income and awareness for our Centre and our animal welfare work. Every purchase and donation made at one of our five shops helps us to continue our rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming work. The shops rely on kind donations from the public to keep shop floors full of bargain finds and little treasures, so why not declutter and donate this spring? Our charity shops are at The Courtyard, Bawtry; High Street, Rotherham, Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington; Field Street, Thorne and on eBay. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We are always grateful of donations ranging from clothing to small furniture and everything in between. These can be dropped off at any of our five locations, or collected by our volunteer drivers by calling 01302 719790. There are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We also provide dog training, off lead facilities, a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.

Any enquiries to Teresa Robinson 01302 611256 We are thrilled and proud to be celebrating our 100th year this year. We have an excellent written and photographic archive at Loversall and the following information is taken from the minutes of 1919. The items on the programme for the first year included topics such as poultry keeping, toy making, a discussion on venereal disease, bee keeping, fruit bottling, babies and their illnesses, fruit culture and pruning, and the cutting and making up of children’s clothes. Men were invited to those talks that it was thought might interest them. Tea was served at all meetings and the meetings usually ended with some form of entertainment, often games or dancing and singing. There were occasionally competitions such as the 6 best eggs or a hand sewn item such as a camisole. During this first year arrangements were made for dress making classes, dancing lessons and a subscription library was started. A social evening was arranged for both men and women that included entertainment, refreshments and dancing until midnight. Fund raising efforts were launched in order to raise money for a ‘proper Institute club room’, an open air fete held in the grounds of Loversall Hall being one such event. As any member of Loversall WI will tell you we have been raising money for our ‘dear’ hut ever since All in all a very busy first year.

Don’t worry if it feels a little tough when you first start this is normal! You are starting something new and both the body and mind need to become accustomed to the new skill you are teaching it so stick with it. Make running social. Running with others helps with motivation and also sharing a common interest. With Park run available free every weekend this is the perfect opportunity to run with others. Get the right kit. Running is one of the simplest and cheapest forms of exercise but making an investment into a decent pair of running shoes is worth the small investment. Visit a running specialist who will spend time with you making the right choice of footwear.

Tickhill & District Lions Like to get involved with Lions? We need male & female members!
The residents of Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth, Loversall, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth are very generous when we ask for donations to help support good causes but have you ever thought about joining the Lions? What’s stopping you?
Who we are:
We are a group of 29 men and women from a wide range of backgrounds with a spread of ages from 30s to retirees, who want to increase our numbers across the entire district.
How we operate:
We are separated into two sections, Welfare Committee “those who spend money,” meet fortnightly (in a private room in a pub) to discuss and where necessary decide how to investigate requests for help. If we decide to help we will then put our proposal to the entire club the following week when we meet for the Business Meeting at Tickhill Cricket Club. All members then vote on these proposals. Activities Committee “those who raise money,” meet fortnightly (in a different pub to the Welfare Committee) to discuss fund raising activities, these would include annual events such as the Santa Float and Firework Extravaganza, but there
are many other events and organisations that we support throughout the year with activities such as Race Nights, Casino Nights and disabled sports days and outings. All events are then discussed and agreed at the Business Meeting the following week.
What to do next:
Contact any Lion to arrange an informal meeting with two of our Membership Committee to see if we like you and most of all you like us. You would then be invited to attend three meetings, a Welfare Committee Meeting, an Activities Meeting and a Business Meeting. It would then be time for you and us to decide whether to proceed. It’s as simple as that.
Being a member:
It is hoped that all members will attend every week, but we are realistic and understand that every member freely gives of their time whenever they can, not just to attend our meetings but also to help at the events arranged by the Activities Committee. So, yes, joining the Lions is a commitment but we are a social group who enjoy each other’s company whilst helping others.
PS. And have fun doing it!

SAYING GOODBYE
Dear Friends,
It is not easy to say goodbye to a job, a loved one who is passing on or has passed on or a friend / relation who is moving on. Over the past year, I had had experiences of my daughter marrying and leaving my sphere of influence and my older brother and dad passing on to eternity. By the time you may be reading this letter, I would have visited my home country, Ghana, to burry my dad and partake in his funeral. In all these experiences, the most difficult goodbye I had to say was letting my daughter go. Please, do not get me wrong – I love my brother and dad to bits. It will be their memories that I will always hold on to. Talking of memories, I wonder if I can remind you of Jesus who had to say goodbye to his friends on the eve before his death. He shared a meal with them. This is called the Passover meal. The Apostle Paul described the scene as follows: “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 26) Jesus said goodbye to his friends with a meal. This meal has
40
become a memorial to many Christians till this day. Jesus’ memorial has affected most of us to the extent that some of us want to know him and live like him. Again, the Apostle Paul puts it as follows: “But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3: 7 – 10). Knowing Christ involves saying goodbyes to some aspects of our lives as well. I wonder If you have people or experiences in your life that you are holding on to and may be a bother to your lifestyle or spirituality. It can be an abusive relationship or an addiction that is causing so much grief, but you still would not let it go. I wonder what your memorial will be when you pass on to eternity. For my dad, it was his modest lifestyle and respect for every human being – child or adult and rich or poor. That was the part of his life that made him want to be like Christ. He did that by having faith in God
and believing that the power of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter day could transform him into a better person; and it did.
We are in lent and gradually moving to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. I wonder, if I can appeal to you to use this season of repentance, forgiveness and newness as an opportunity to say goodbye to some attitudes and experiences, including some difficult relationships. Furthermore, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider making a fresh start by asking Jesus to take control of your life and help change you by the power of his resurrection. The change will be gradual so do not be frustrated if it becomes a ‘two steps forward, one step back’ change. It can take a month, months or even years. However, I wonder if I can remind you that the little changes will become a great change in your life in the future. All it takes is for you to be determined to do it. You can even ask for support from the church, friends and even agencies. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,
Rev Dr. Frank Ok ai-Sam

WORLD BOOK DAY 2019 AT TICKHILL ESTFELD World Book Day is always an exciting event across the country, with most schools celebrating in some way. At Estfeld we like to
ring the changes. We don’t dress up every year, so this year it was even more special. It was great to see the whole school dressed as a favourite book character.
During the day we held a paired reading event, where older pupils become the reading expert and share a book with the younger
46
pupils. The younger children love reading with their book buddies and the older pupils are wonderful teachers, pointing out interesting features, explaining or asking questions for the younger children to answer, and helping with the trickier parts of the text. We were also delighted to be joined on the day by local author Jackie Irwin, who came to read her book “Cloth Ears and the Circus” to the pupils and also gave a presentation to the pupils about how she became an author and had her first book published.
The pupils really enjoyed seeing the original first drafts and art work and how Jackie developed her work over several years, prior to publication. She was an inspiration and we would like to thank Jackie for spending the morning with us in school – we are very grateful and do hope that she will visit us again when she publishes her next book. Thank you to Mrs Martin and the staff in school staff for organising and supporting the event, and to our pupils and their families for their continuing support.

SHROVE TUESDAY
YEAR 1
Traditionally Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients. Year 6 and Tickhill Town Council threw in a sporting event based around the food and the running, flipping relay race was a great spectacle and lots of fun. Well done to the final four!
On Wednesday 6th March Year One visited Magna. We had a fantastic day! To start we entered a workshop and began by making our very own sticky slime. It was so much fun getting our hands dirty and even better we got to take it home. After that we had lunch and even got to have a quick play on the amazing playground before torrential rain. When we went back inside, we went straight to the fire tornado and watched it swirl up into the sky. After we walked down many stairs to visit the earth room. There were so many things to play with, even real-life diggers. Then we went to water. We got very wet but it was worth it to learn all about how canals work and even have a sneaky go on the water guns. To finish the day we visited air, not just to dry but to investigate and play. Overall, we had lots of fun and I’m sure we’d all love to visit again.

IN THE GARDEN
Open Your Garden This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens. Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too.
52
It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening.

Music lovers sometimes think they have heard everything. The audience which assembled at Tickhill Music Society to hear a performance by the trumpet player Matilda Lloyd could be forgiven for settling comfortably in their seats to hear the opening numbers composed in 18th century Italy. Little could they imagine that by the end of the evening they would have been taken on an exhilarating journey encompassing all the intervening periods and many different continents and finishing with a piece written in 2014 commemorating the First World War – of which, more later. All was delivered with great verve, as you would expect from a former BBC Young Musician of the Year, who also demonstrated pure lyricism where it was needed, as in Faure’s “Après un rêve”. In all of this Matilda was ably abetted by the pianist Leo Nicholson, who not only showed great skill as an accompanist but also midway through each half gave Matilda a break by playing two piano solos – one by Scarlatti and the other by Gershwin.

sound alarming, the overall impression was of a young musician at the top of her class, capable of sensitivity as well as the pyrotechnics one expects from a brass player. Adrian Hattrell

Clare Wheat (soprano) and friends with Jonathan Gooing (piano) perform extracts from operas by Purcell, Mozart, Weber, Verdi, Bizet, Puccini and others. To be preceded at 6.00 p.m. by the Society's AGM. Non-members: admission £12 for each event at the door. Accompanied children (under 16) and students (16-19) are admitted free of charge. Our new season begins on Friday, 13th September at 7.00 p.m. in St. Mary's Church with the welcome return of Bel Canto.
It was the contemporary piece, “Seven Halts on the Somme”, which caught the audience’s attention. First they were told to expect something synaesthetic (i.e. the composition of the music was stimulated by the perception of colour), and a special effect was created by Matilda playing into the strings of the piano while Leo held down the sustaining pedal. TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Our February meeting saw the welcome return of Doug Stewart, a presenter on Radio Humberside. His talk was entitled ‘The Way We Were – Gardening 60 years ago’. One or two of our members could relate to his tales whilst others could remember their parents gardening in the same way. How many of you wrap your gardening tools in oily rags, or sharpen your spades and hoes?
Gardening has come a long way in the past few years. It used to be that people had allotments to provide food to feed their families but now it is seen as a relaxing way to pass a few hours and to get some fresh air and exercise. You can even be prescribed ‘gardening’ by your Doctor! He also gave us pause for thought when he asked the question “What did we do for coffee and scones before garden centres were invented? I personally could not answer
that one! As always, Doug provided us with a very entertaining evening full of thought provoking questions and humour. On a slightly more serious note, throughout the year we donate money to the Scouts for their help with our annual show, which this year will be on Saturday 7th September and have a stall to support them at the Gala. We also donate money to Tickhill in Bloom and in order to be able to do this, we rely on the support of our members throughout the year and, of course, at the Tickhill Gala where we have a plant stall. All donations of plants, nearer the time, would also be very much appreciated so if you are about to split your plants to give them room to grow, could you save one or two for us please? Our next meeting will be on Thursday 28th March when our speaker will be Rachel Barrowcliffe from Worksop. Rachel
T
will be talking about container gardening and growing vegetables in pots which, for those who have limited space in their gardens, should be very useful. This will be Rachel’s first visit to THS and so I am sure there will be a good turnout of members (and guests) to welcome her. For those of you who like to plan ahead, our speaker on 25th April (in the Methodist Church Hall at 7.15pm) will be David Logan, the Head Gardener at Doddington Hall near Lincoln who will be talking about the development of their gardens. We always welcome new members to our monthly meetings. Subscriptions are £8 for the year, which I am sure you will agree is excellent value for money for 10 meetings with speakers and the AGM.

ANYONE FOR CROQUET ? T
When English Heritage took over Brodsworth Hall, more than twenty years ago, the Croquet Association asked whether they could set up a Croquet Club to play on the croquet lawns there. Sheila Lines was a Physical Education lecturer at Lady Mabel College at Wentworth Woodhouse, who had recently retired. She and Carolyn Walker, also a PE lecturer, took on the task although they knew nothing about croquet. They visited many croquet clubs and decided the Golf Croquet was an easier game for beginners, who could progress to Association Croquet if they wished. The gardens were overgrown, so the lawns had to be gradually restored to a suitable length, hoops and mallets were acquired, a rule book was written and a meeting at St Mary’s Church Hall was advertised for prospective players. A few people turned up and slowly the club grew. Since then Brodsworth Hall has been conserved and the gardens have been restored to their Victorian glory, now winning many awards. Now the club enjoys playing in the beautiful surroundings on most days when the Hall is open. The original club rules state that whites must be worn and this tradition is continued to enhance the atmosphere. Visitors enjoy the unique experience of watching the games, most people’s knowledge of croquet is from Alice in Wonderland, and so we are always willing to explain how we play. It is a game of skill and tactics, not just hitting balls through hoops. The aim is to get your ball through the hoop before your opponents, while preventing them by blocking or hitting away their balls. Hoops are played in a set order. Four balls are always used. When playing singles two players have two balls each, for doubles four players have one ball each and play in pairs. The first ball through the hoop wins that point and everyone plays on to the next hoop. Club members do not need to be English Heritage members to play at Brodsworth and the annual subscription is not expensive, there are no green fees or extras to pay. We do play friendly matches with other clubs and more competitive matches in the Yorkshire Federation. If you would like to experience playing in the beautiful surroundings of Brodsworth, with friendly people, the club is holding taster mornings on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 23th May. You will be met at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am and taken to the lawns. Equipment and instruction will be provided; all you need are flat shoes. We look forward to seeing you there!

THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP OF THE TICKHILL AND COLLIERY SURGERY T
Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare Both Tickhill and Colliery surgeries are now open every Saturday morning. Tickhill opens 9am till 12noon as part of the Extended Access Service provided by Primary Care Doncaster. Three other Doncaster practices and the Same Day Health Centre are also providing extra appointments either at weekends or evenings. This is an extension of the GP service and offers routine and same day appointments with a range of clinicians. Including GPs, Nurses and other Healthcare Professionals. All appointments are available to anyone registered with a GP in Doncaster. To book an appointment contact your own GP Practice. As you may not see your usual doctor, you will be asked to agree to allowing access to your health care record. This is to ensure you can be offered the treatment that is right for you and prescribed appropriate medication or referred for further treatment if necessary. If you do not give your consent, then your GP practice will not be able to offer you one of these appointments. Should you need to cancel or rearrange your appointment, please call your usual GP practice. The Colliery surgery is open 8:30am till 11:45 am. for patients registered with the Tickhill and Colliery Practice only. These are all pre bookable NOT same day appointments. Message from the Practice Manager If you are unable to get connected to the Out of Hours Service when the Practice is closed this will be due to all their lines being busy. Please either call again until you are connected to a call handler or call 111.

TICKHILL TOGETHER T
has been a hive of activity over the last couple of months. In February we hosted our first Murder Mystery evening, this was held in the Parish Room and the evening was well supported. Our thanks go to Brian Keith who wrote the story, the actors who set the scene and everyone else who helped to make it an enjoyable evening. Thanks also to the mystery person who donated the deserts. Our next event is under way and that is The Scarecrow Festival on Saturday 4th May. There are a number of things being planned for the day. This year our 10th Anniversary and we are hoping more people than ever will join in to make it really special! Watch out for more exciting details. Yorkshire Day follows on the 1st August. Plans are underway for a treasure hunt, details to follow soon. Another very important date to put in your diaries is 31st August, which is our Annual 1940s Day. Plans are moving along well and this should be another great day. If you are a Facebook user please do visit our page. If you can offer to help in any way, please contact one of our team. Tickhill Together’s next meeting is our AGM, on the 11th April, 5.30 p.m. in the Carpenters Arms.

Tickhill and District Much of the stained glass high in the windows on the south side of St Mary’s looks like a jumbled assembly of pieces. Our speaker at the February meeting, Brian Sprakes, explained how the windows would have looked before they were smashed during the Reformation and Civil War periods. Replacing what pieces of glass were saved was somewhat random but thanks to Brian’s photographs it was possible to identify individual pieces such as a merchant’s mark, saints, bishops, angels and musical instruments. We now have plenty to look for on a visit to church. The latest Occasional Paper written by Jean Nicholson is ‘Friary Farm: My childhood home’. Jean vividly describes living without mains water, electricity or sewerage and all the hard work for

her parents running the household and the farm. Nevertheless, Jean was the envy of her friends for all the opportunities she, her sister and brother had for play around the farm. The Paper, with plenty of colour pictures, is price £2 and is for sale at Castlegate Cards. Our April 18th Speakers tell the story of ‘The Woman who didn’t exist’. A true story about a northern family and what happened to them during the First World War and the choices they had to make. We start at 7.30pm in the Methodist School Room and visitors are always welcome.

BOOTS & BOLOS T Spring is a good time of year to start new hobbies, with longer days and (hopefully) some better weather. One way of putting spring in your step is to ‘keep on dancing’. Several newspaper articles over the past few months have pointed out the health benefits of line dancing by exercising, using your brain and making new friends. Boots & Bolos line dancing classes have been in and around Oldcotes for over 20 years. Unfortunately, we don’t have any classes for brand new beginners at the moment, but we have three classes that might suit you if you’ve danced before and/or want to add another dancing class to your repertoire. Our Wednesday afternoon class started about 6 months ago (1 – 3 p.m. at Oldcotes Village Hall). Our Thursday afternoon class started about 18 months ago (1.30 – 3.30 p.m. at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall, Maltby). Our Thursday evening class is the longest running and started just over 5 years ago (Thursdays 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. Oldcotes Village Hall) and is suitable for intermediate dancers. All of our classes cost £3.50 and include a free tea/coffee break half way through. Boots & Bolos also hold monthly line dance Social evenings on the first Saturday of every month, at Oldcotes Village Hall, 7.30 – 10.45 p.m. The next Social Evening is Saturday 6th April. Non-stop dancing with over 50 line dances and 2 partner dances throughout the night. We play a wide range of dances with request forms on all tables so you can put your requests in for your favourite dances!
SCARECROW FESTIVAL T Saturday 4th May
This event has brought a buzz to Tickhill for ten years now, and everyone is again invited to make and display a Scarecrow on our
10th anniversary!
Peoples ingenuity is unbelievable and we have had some fantastic Scarecrows over the years – there is no set theme – just let your imagination go! However, as entries are viewed by families, we respectfully request that consideration is given to the content and presentation of scarecrows. Entry forms can be obtained from Castlegate Cards or can be printed from our Facebook page. To be included on the programme and the official route please return entry forms to Castlegate Cards by Friday 12th April. We will be in touch with your position on the route and your entry number soon after this closing date. The time on the day will be 10am to 5pm, and as well as the Scarecrows there will Children’s entertainment at The Carpenters Arms and a variety of other things happening – more details next month. We hope that everyone will join together to make it a fantastic day for Tickhill. Let’s make it the biggest and best yet!

The last month has seen a lot of tidying up of various Council matters. The Financial year end is now upon us and there will be much work to do in preparing the accounts and day to day books for the internal and external auditors. All Standing Orders, Financial Risk Assessments, Financial Regulations, Retention Documents and Risk Assessments have been updated to reflect any legal changes and will be available in due course on the Website should anyone wish to inspect the documents.
April, The Clubs always welcome new members and Tickhill Town Council hope they have a successful season and are blessed with good weather. The end of a very stormy week saw our Spring Jumble Sale happen. Despite a much
reduced quantity of jumble and buyers we still cleared £230. Not bad considering the circumstances. Thanks to all the people who donated goods for sale and those who came and purchased them. Our next sale will be on October 12th. Please put the date in your diary and plan to have a good clear out ready for Christmas. Having almost completed their first aid badge the Cubs decide to cook pancakes and, hopefully, not to have to put their new first aid skills
into practice!! Success on both counts. Pancakes were made from scratch and cooked on individual gas cookers; no one needed treatment for burns and everyone went home full of pancakes. The Beaver colony decided to explore some science subjects. They discovered the cleaning power of coke on 2p’s and how to make volcanoes. As I said last month, being a leader can be good fun and even bring a smile to your face. But, we really need some extra help. We are very fortunate in having committed adults as our leaders but, most of our leaders are employed in jobs which entail shift working, working
overseas or travelling at very short notice. This places a great strain on them and I am extremely grateful for the dedication they show to this entirely voluntary task. I know I have said this before but we really do need some more adults who are prepared to come forward and assist at any of the sections – Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. If you would like more details or would simply like to discuss what you can offer, please do not hesitate to contact me as described below. tickhillscouts@aol.com; www.tickhillscouts.btck.co.uk

COMMUNITY
ST MARYS CHURCH,TICKHILL T Dear Friends,
As you are probably aware an appeal was launched several months ago to undertake some significant repairs to the tower at St Mary’s church which I’m pleased to report should be undertaken during the course of 2019. We are eternally gratefully for everyone who has and continues to support our appeal. We now see this as an opportune time to consider how we may be able to reorder some of the internal parts of our church building in ways to make it a major centre for the day to day life of Tickhill, where people can gather to enjoy activities which are perhaps presently not available elsewhere. The vision is that St. Mary’s church is inclusive to everyone, regular churchgoers or not, and still keeping its integrity as being a central place of Christian worship and witness in the community, this being our parish church. Churches are being encouraged to develop their use as a sustainable community resource and St. Mary’s wishes to move in this direction to actively play our part in fulfilling the needs of today’s people and for the generations that follow. It would be great if you could help us with this important and exciting work. In working towards this goal, we would love to hear what facilities you think we might be able to provide to make this wonderful medieval building a welcoming place to the whole community. Please come along to a very informal gathering to be held in
74
church on Saturday 06 April at 2.00 p.m. when we would very much look forward to seeing you and hear your views, all of which are important to us. Please put this date in your diary and I look forward to seeing you there. Every blessing -
