Anne Bradstreet Officially Spring is here and looking around it would seem that nature agrees. At the time of writing we are enjoying some sunshine filled days and the air is alive with the sound of birdsong. Long may it last! The delivery window for this magazine includes both Mother’s Day and the start of British Summer Time, lighter nights and longer days are on the way. Springtime often starts people thinking about their homes, whether it is for a traditional spring clean or more drastic changes. If you are planning home or garden improvements this Spring and Summer you will find a huge range of people to help you within the pages of this magazine. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give them a call. The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 12th April. We usually see the start of the summer events in May so please don’t forget to get the details to me in good time to publicise your event. Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.

Community Hello from Mayflower We all welcome the light mornings and evenings together with the spring flowers starting to burst out, spring is just around the corner. It will be kitten time soon and we are already taking names of people wanting kittens, which is a good thing. So if you are wanting a kitten rather than an older cat just let us know. We do however have the most adorable cats some indoor and some that can be let out once they are aware of their surroundings. I love cats and could easily become a cat hoarder if my husband didn’t keep an eye on me. We have 3 at the moment and a stray that lives in our garage in an evening. I am not sure where it goes during the day, but at least I know it’s warm and fed in an evening. I do however keep well out of its way as it is not the friendliest cat, I have been spat at more than once, even with cat food in my hand, so I just leave it in its own little world. We have nearly come to the end of our Charity of the Year for M & S Wheatley Hall Rd, which we are all really sad about. We would like to thank both the customers that have been very generous also the M & S Team for putting up with us and making us very welcome. We have been bag packing and bucket collecting for the past year and everyone has been brilliant. When we have a final total for the year I will let you know. We have recently arranged a Race Night in Misson, this was a huge success and raised over £2000. Liz and Kelvin organised it with

Sara doing food and the rest of us chipping in where we could. It was such a fun evening and the compare was terrific, so a good night was had by all. We have lots of older dogs in the Sanctuary that just need loving homes for their last years. Most won’t need walking miles a day they just need to have someone to care for them in a loving home environment. If you think you can give an older dog a home please come to see us. We have beautiful dogs in our Sanctuary, even though our kennel assistants care for them well, it isn’t the same as having a warm snuggly blanket in your forever home. All our kennel assistants know about each dog in their care, so if you require further help and information on any particular dog just ask. Don’t forget we have a lovely pet shop in our reception area, there are lovely beds, collars, toys in fact everything that your dog or cat needs, we will look forward to seeing you. If you would like to volunteer to dog walk or fundraise or if you have any fundraising ideas of your own please let us know. If you need any other details on our procedure and opening times please give us a call 01302 711330 we will be happy to help. Looking forward to seeing you soon

Rio My owners are moving to different houses and can’t take me with them. I have taken everything in my stride so far and my carer says that I’m simply a treasure to have around. I just love everybody and I’m always happy to play a game or simply be fussed. It’s nice here but it’s not like home. All I want is a family to call my own again. Is that too much for me to ask? In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make me wait too long.

Patrick I have had to come into care because my family have moved into a flat and I was unable to go with them. You see it is on the second floor and as such I wouldn’t be able to have access to the outside. My family understand that I’m used to being able to explore the garden so would be very unhappy being confined to the house. An independent soul who knows what he wants. I’m very lovable but please don’t expect me to be a ‘cuddle/lap cat’ I’m happy to weave around your legs though and love to be fussed. If you’re looking for an undemanding companion, then look no further cos here I am.

Tickhill Estfeld School Estfeld Celebrates World Book Day. On Wednesday 3rd March 2017 we were lucky enough to be visited by the well-known children’s author and illustrator, Lynne Chapman. We have a selection of Lynne’s books in school and our children are familiar with them. Our pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 enjoyed hearing about the life and work of an author and illustrator. There is a lot more to it than one would imagine, and the pupils had the opportunity to ask Lynne questions about her work and how she became an author and illustrator. It was an inspirational presentation and the pupils heard how Lynne had shown great determination and perseverance in pursuing her chosen career. Our pupils in Reception Class and Years 1, 2 and 3 all took part in an illustration workshop led by Lynne; she really inspired and motivated the pupils and the standard of illustrations produced by our pupils as a result was impressive. The fun continued in the evening when pupils returned to school. Key stage 2 pupils took part in the Big Book Quiz – congratulations to the winning team who are pictured and all won a book of their choice. Our younger pupils returned at 6pm, suitably dressed in pyjamas and dressing gowns, and were treated to bedtime stories and a delicious hot chocolate. On the following day all KS1 and KS2 pupils took part in a paired reading session, whilst pupils in Reception Class were visited by a representative from Asda, who led a Peppa Pig activity workshop. Thank you to everybody in school, and to our visitors for giving our pupils such a memorable range of experiences that will encourage them to read for pleasure. Thank you also to our parents and carers for the many positive comments regarding the World Book Day celebrations. 22 TICKHILL TODAY

Arts Review

& what’s going on - April 2017 •

Maureen Fisher

The show of the month has to be at the Djanogly Art Gallery where Winifred Nicholson’s joyous exhibition of nearly 100 works graces the 3 galleries. She was Ben Nicholson’s first wife, before he ran off with Barbara Hepworth, (he left her before their third child was born), and she managed to continue as an artist whilst raising 3 children, producing new and fresh work until her death in her 80s. She is an important figure in art and in feminism, a renowned colourist with a marvellous touch; her work is often delicate and ephemeral. Her real skill was knowing when to stop, her works are never over-worked and tired, and that is a real skill. The poet Kathleen Raine, said on a BBC programme about Winifred, that “flowers were an occasion for painting light”. The exhibition is excellent, and the café there makes a trip to Nottingham a pleasant one.

in hundreds of UK town halls and theatres night after night as well as featuring on TV. The exhibition explores how the showmanship of wrestling drew on earlier traditions of public entertainment such as music hall and circus and how this informed the development of the cast of characters, storylines and audience participation unique to the sport. Life drawing: 8 April 11-1pm and 2 - 4pm Art History Lecture: Friday 7th April 10.30 am: ‘Renoir’s Portraits’ The great impressionist painter Auguste Renoir is perhaps best known for his paintings of voluptuous nudes and social gatherings, but he was also a prolific painting of portraits, from intimate images of his family to formal commissions. £5 www.doncaster.gov.uk/ museums Village Ventures I fell over a booklet of events for this wonderful live and local organisation, which is now run by someone in Derbyshire rather than Notts county council… their publicity seems sparse, and the website non-functional… but they are still there and doing it, even though we have missed many months’ worth of shows… Saturday 22 April 6.30pm ‘Opera Dudes – Licensed to Trill’ I have seen these two clowns ( I use the word loosely) and they are great fun and sing of course too… Everton Village Hall 01777 817395 www.villageventures.org.uk Art at the Deli: April exhibition ‘The Owl Lady’: Maureen Fisher solo exhibition www. artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck from 14 April to 11 June ‘First Rain -Warli Painting’ These are stunning paintings from India, filled with an intense and detailed patterning. I first saw these works in the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green about 18 months ago, so am assuming it’s the same work and that they are on a UK tour. Well worth a look see and more exciting than the last lego show. www.harleygallery.co.uk

Djanogly Art Gallery, until 4 June ‘ Winifred Nicholson - Liberation of Colour’ - a major retrospective of the artist’s work in this most convivial of gallery spaces. Well worth a visit. Also ‘Sarah Key -Worlds all at Sea’ a drawing show in the same gallery. http://www. lakesidearts.org.uk/

2008 (Bawtry) Squadron Air Cadets GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT (ACTUALLY IT’S THE LEFT)

A few weeks ago our newest Bawtry cadets jumped the final hurdle and were awarded their First Class Cadet badges. Throughout the passing out ceremony they were congratulated on their hard work and were encouraged to grasp every opportunity that they will be offered. Before they join their new flight teams I asked them to tell me what they hope to achieve. Cdt E Kettlewood said she wanted to come here and do her best. She is set on going into the RAF and has learnt so much about the ATC and the RAF and what it means to be in a team. Cdt K Hill told me how she has achieved her Radio Communications badge and also her Heart Start qualification, which teaches you lifesaving procedures. Another new member Cdt A Penketh who is also very keen to join the Forces, has said how this has given her a confidence boost and also how much she has learnt in such a short time. Cdt Penketh will also be one of the first of the new recruits to go flying this year. Not many 13 year olds get the chance to experience this every day. So as these new Cadets begin their cadet careers we now have vacancies to recruit more. So if you want to experience a new and wide range of activities as well as fundraising, parading and assisting in the local community. Please contact us for a visit or joining pack. Tickhill Library Thursday 23rd February was a very special day for our Library when it was officially opened as Tickhill Community Library. The official opening was carried out by two of the Library’s young users Sam & Heidi Radford together with long term Library regular, Molly Moffit, and we also celebrated her birthday on the day with a cake and candles! The Tickhill Community Library Charity are now responsible for the operation of the Library and the day to day running of the Library has handed over to a team of volunteers who are doing a fantastic job under the expert guidance of Lesley Nicholson, ensuring our Library remains an integral part of our community.

Easter brrings new life!

Dear Friends, The Easter season is here. Some of you may be wondering what the retailers have on their sleeves to ‘woo’ you into their shops during the Easter season. Interestingly, one of the products that has become popular on shelves at Easter is the ‘Easter Egg’. I wonder whether it is because many people talk about new life. The egg represents new life. I have therefore decided to consider the concept of the egg in relation to new life in God at Easter. Just a little bit of science may help. The natural egg has four basic parts – the shell, air cell, albumen and the yolk. The Shell supports the structure of the egg and is the ȴUVW OLQH RI GHIHQFH DJDLQVW EDFWHULD 7KH DLU cell, the space between the egg shell and the egg white, provides the chick with air when it is ready to start breathing on its own and hatch from the egg. The albumen (egg white) has four alternating thick and thin layers. 7KHVH OD\HUV DUH PDGH XS RI ȵXLGV DQG JHOV that are used to support and centre the yolk. It also contains nutrients. The yolk produces the embryo and it is a food source for the embryo. I wonder how we experience and express God’s protection, support, and nourishment as a people who have new life from the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. The bible indicates God’s protection for those who love God, know God, and trust in him. Since Christians do not seem immune to accident and death, how are we to understand God’s protection? Another point is that I wonder what steps you or your local community take to protect those who come to you, including ‘strangers’. God comes to live in you by his spirit when you believe in him. God also supports you by giving you gifts and talents. I wonder wheth her you know your gifts and talents and whethe er you are using them to help humankind. I also wonder how you support others to appropriate their gifts and talents to help their families and society at large. 42 TICKHILL TODAY

As a Christian, I believe that God nourishes his peoplle as they study, fellowship, break bread and pray together (Acts 4: 32 – 37). Secondly y, personal study of the scriptures and prayer help individuals grow too. I wonder iff I can remind you that each person needs to grow physically, spiritually and emotionally. So, whatever your faith or believes are, I wonder how you nourish your soul and how often do you do it. The newly hatched chick needs air to survive. Easter brings new life so we need God’s Spirit WR ȴOO XV DQG JLYH XV VSLULWXDO DLU WR OLYH DIUHVK Breathing also involve exhaling. In Christian circles, exhaling involves confession of sins to God and to one another. I wonder how you deal with sin in your life. Is it a matter of, “I don’t care” or that of guilt? If it’s the “I don’t care’ attitude, I wonder how you get along with people and your own conscience. If it is guilt, I wonder how you deal with it – sulk, hate yourself, or confess and move on. What about those who have ‘wronged’ you? Are you prepared to forgive them or you’re the type who never forgive? Just to remind you that, ‘to forgive is divine’. I also wonder if I can remind you that there are many individuals and agencies that can help you deal with guilt, unforgiveness, and / or resentment. I am always reminded that the egg can only produce a chick through fertilisation. Hence, it is only through intimacy (being close) with *RG WKDW ZLOO \LHOG D QHZ \RX Have a blessed Easter season. Alba Duo For Tickhill Music 6RFLHW\ȇV Č´UVW concert of 2017 we were treated to the excellent Flute and Guitar Duo of Samantha Pearce and Francisco Correa. The programme began with a transcription of Sonata in A, BWV1020 by JS Bach. A sprightly Allegro was followed by an Adagio of long, sustained phrases RQ WKH ČľXWH DFFRPSDQLHG E\ D ZDOW] OLNH support from the guitar. A bright and lively Allegro completed the work. A piece in the form of a habanera by Ravel was stately and languorous, a sort of vocalise or song without words. Next came two movements (Scherzo and Allegretto espressivo) from Gran Duo. Op. 85 by Mauro Giuliani (1781-1828). He lived in Vienna for many years and knew Beethoven. 7KH Č´UVW PRYHPHQW KDG D PL[WXUH RI VWDFFDWR SDVVDJHV DQG FRQWUDVWLQJ ČľRZLQJ O\ULFLVP 7KH VHFRQG KDG D ERXQF\ PHORG\ 7KH Č´UVW half concluded with three Columbian dances VKRZLQJ LQČľXHQFHV RI WKHLU IRON PXVLF URRWV The second half began with a sonata by Telemann originally written for oboe and harpsichord. The next piece, Suite Buenos Aires, had four movements, the outer ones crisp, punchy and percussive with the inner two movements slow and tender. So ended a most enjoyable evening of excellent music making thoroughly enjoyed by a large audience. Another triumph for Tickhill Music Society in their 40th Season. Philip Mottram

Local History Society

Tickhill and District Our February ‘School Dinners’ night, covered everything from chocolate pudding with pink custard to catapults and a pet rat (stuffed of course!). Ninety members went back to school, many dressed in uniforms, and supposedly under the control of a Headmaster complete with mortar board and cane. Starting with the school register, we had exams, a school bell, real dinner ladies, a school caretaker and a gym mistress. Members really entered into the spirit of the evening with lots of laughter and hilarious memories of the past. Thank you to all who took part. The April Meeting has a change from the advertised speaker, this will now feature Malcolm Danby talking about Worksop Manor. Mentioned in the Domesday book, there has been a house on this site since the 1100s. The present house was rebuilt in 1763 62 TICKHILL TODAY

after a disastrous fire destroyed the 1538 building. I was reputed to be one of the largest houses in England. Our latest Occasional Paper is ‘Hall Stories: aspects of life in Alverley Hall, Loversall Hall and St Catherine’s Hall’. Alverley Hall has not survived, the other two halls have, but both have seen changes in their use. Find out about the lives of the families who built the halls and those who subsequently lived in them, and see how the halls’ use changed when large mansions were no longer needed as family homes. Situated less than two miles apart, the halls’ stories reflect some major landmarks in our history, from the impact of world wars to the growth of the coal industry and the changing attitudes to medical care. The paper is on sale at KSM, Castlegate, price £2.
