Welcome to the
August 2017 edition
“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.“ Anthony J. D’Angelo The summer holidays already! This is the first year that one of my children doesn’t have the long 6 week break, and won’t be joining us on our family holiday this summer, but instead has made his own arrangements for a break. It will be odd going without him, but we will be making the most of still having two wanting to holiday with Mum and Dad, although I suspect that we won’t see that much of them! August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the time too). Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones.

The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 18th August. As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Enjoy the summer, and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine.
Best wishes,

It Takes Teamwork The 2008 Bawtry Air Cadets pride themselves on their teamwork, as well as their responsibilities to the community. We VSHQG WKH ȴ UVW SDUW RI WKH \HDU WUDLQLQJ DQG practicing for our Wing Training Day, which involves other squadrons around South and West Yorkshire. There are a variety of competitions, which we enter, from drill DQG ȴ UVW DLG WR PRGHO DHURSODQHV DQG DLU recognition. We practice over many months becoming a strong team supporting each other on the day to achieve our best. This year was no exception. With a lot of new recruits we have experienced the various competition and gathered a lot of information throughout the day. We triumphed in our PRGHOOLQJ ZLWK ZLQQLQJ ȴ UVW SODFH LQ WKHLU categories. The drill team and banner teams did us proud coming in the top half of the 33 participating in Wing Training day. It is a very long day and our cadets are given time to catch up with friends from other squadrons and also support them during the competition. We are very proud of 2008(Bawtry) Air Cadets Wing Training team 2017 If you wish to be part of the team we are recruiting for September 2017 Wednesday and Fridays 6.45pm – 9.15pm 2008@aircadets.org
Could you give 2 hours a month to support an older person to get more out of life? Dennis is 91 and lives alone in Doncaster; his passion in life is all things football. A lot of people we support through Age UK Doncaster are safe, warm and have everything practical they need, but they are often lonely and not doing the things that matter the most to them in life. Since launching in January 2017, Circles is putting a stop to this. Circles put people at the centre of everything we do; we are about all the things that make life that little bit richer. Each Circle has a clear purpose. The purpose of Dennis’s Circle is to keep him involved in football. ‘I love football, I could talk all day about it but it’s not the same when you don’t see many people, especially those with the same interests’. Dennis was matched with our volunteer Alex. They have since attended a charity football match together and have been reminiscing over old team photos. Other people’s Circles involve staying active, cooking or crafts, re-connecting with a faith community or starting dancing again. Circles are seeing great outcomes in Doncaster and we could not do our work without our fantastic community of volunteers here at Age UK. By dedicating just 2 hours a month you can help more people make the most of later life. Find out more by calling our Circles team on 01302 812345.

Summer is here, lots of listings have closed down for this period – but there is still plenty on, and not least a visit to the Museum of the Year, just up the road in Wakefield. Congratulations to the eversplendid Hepworth on nailing the big prize (lots of money). We look forward to seeing what comes next. Something appears to be on the cards in Doncaster www.doncaster.gov.uk/iconicbuild with a possible new cultural HQ next to the new Council Offices and round the corner from CAST. It’s a bold looking building and in these straightened times, we know what economic good new galleries can do for a town, let alone all the cultural value and self-esteem that they carry. The Central library in the town centre has long looked past its best, and to incorporate the old school, is a great idea, though it looks a bit of an awkward marriage from the artists impression. It’s such a relief that Doncaster isn’t knocking down another wonderful building, but grabbing an opportunity by the horns. The new building is due to open in Spring 2020. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery open Wed to Sun Exhibition: until 9 September ‘Podules’ by Jan Niedojadlo These gigantic sculptures are often, though not exclusively, inspired by natural and biological forms. Uniquely, visitors are encouraged to enter the sculptures, to fully immerse themselves within these distinct ‘other worlds’ and experience the sights, sounds and smells within. Niedojadlo describes his work as ‘art to viewed on your back - and not just with eyes and brain - but experienced with your whole body’. Until 2nd September ‘XP School Art Exhibition: Are we Really Free to Choose?’ Over the summer Doncaster Museum will be displaying around 50 paintings created by year 9 students at the XP School in Doncaster. The students have created artwork in a Pop Art style to answer the question ‘are we really free to choose?’ 22 TICKHILL TODAY

Hepworth Wakefield until 8 October ‘Howard Hodgkin: Painting India.’ Hodgkin died in May, just days before his exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery opened. He was a splendid colourist, with expressive brush strokes and strange physical spaces in his canvases, which are partly pictorial and sometimes entirely abstract. I remember being arrested by one of his paintings whilst visiting the Tate as a child. He had almost painted out the whole picture with a thick cream coloured layer, it was quite a lesson in clearing out the unwanted in a picture. This show is a bit of an odd one, lots of food for thought and plenty to discuss, and the Hepworth – Museum of the Year- is always worth a visit . www.hepworthwakefield.org Sheffield Theatres following on from last month’s palaeontological themes 21 -23 August in the Lyceum ‘Dinosaur World’ described as an interactive new show for all the family. Mayflowers fund raising projects are getting well under way this year and so far the weather is being kind to us. The Scrufts Dog Show in July was a beautiful day and a huge success, it was lovely to see all the dogs that we have rehomed with their new families. Big thank you to all volunteers and everyone that attended. We are holding a LADIES night on the 11th August to be held in reception at Mayflower starting at 7pm. There will be a representative, Jess from Freedom Aloe Vera products. There will be a beautiful candle Company stall, Finishing Touches will bring along handbags, scarves, jewellery and much more. Please come along for a fun evening including coffee/tea and cake. There will be a raffle and great prizes. We are asking that if you would like tickets they are £3.00 per person. Or just come along and pay on the door, but please call the sanctuary 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 to let us know you are coming. It will just give us a rough idea how many people we are catering for on the night. Table Top sale is on the 16th Sept at the Scout Headquarters in Tickhill, there are a few tables left and the charge will be £12 per table. Please call Janice if you would like to reserve one. 07590 455340. Tracy one of our senior kennel carers thought up a brilliant idea to raise sponsorship. She lived in a kennel for 24 hours, she even dressed up like one of our canine friends. They had great fun, it went out on all of the local radio stations and she stayed in a kennel all day and all night.
Finding a forever home She was probably stir crazy by the time she was let out! But she raised lots of money which is the most important thing. Just a quick few lines about the procedure you will have to go through if you would like to adopt one of our dogs at the Sanctuary. It is always an idea to go and visit your chosen dog a couple of times before eventually taking them home. You will have to have a home check, one of our volunteers will come and check that you have a 5ft fence and your garden is fully secure. We also need to know that your chosen dog will be living inside with you and not living outside in a kennel day and night. Our volunteer will also have a chat to make sure you have chosen the correct dog for your lifestyle. If all is well the following Saturday you will then have to attend an induction talk by one of our experienced dog listeners, which most people find fascinating and very interesting. Have a great summer but don’t forget to keep your furry friends cool on hot days with access to plenty of water. If you would like any further information on any of the above please call me 07969 203206. If you would like further information regarding our adoption process please call 01302 711330. Bye for now
Margaret Godley Have a great summer

Beer
created from nature •
THERE’S A BEER FOR THAT
There are lots of myths about beer. People mistakenly think it's high in calories, contains lots of sugar and is high in fat. None of which are true but it is an easy mistake to make. With such a wide variety of styles, flavours, aromas and colours – there are over 140 styles of beer alone - you’d be forgiven for thinking that the list of what goes into making beer is a long one. But in fact, the truth is much simpler. There are four principal ingredients in beer and they are all natural. More breweries are experimenting with the flavours of their beers by adding in extra ingredients to influence the final flavour/aroma, but they will always use the same four basic ingredients to create their beers in the first place: water, malt, hops and yeast. Each of these natural ingredients contribute flavour and individual characteristics but what, exactly?
32 TICKHILL TODAY
Water - One of the key ingredients in beer is water. It makes up 95% of the finished product. The attributes of the water vastly affect the beer styles, for example, soft water is ideal for lagers whilst hard water is perfect for a porter or a stout. Malt - The sweet base of beer. Most beers are brewed using barley malt, but others also add wheat, rice and oats to the mix to create different colours, flavours and that all important mouthfeel. Some malts produce more fermentable sugars than others, and so will also influence the strength of your beer to a degree. Yeast - A key ingredient of beer. It's an important contributor (up to 50%) to the flavour profile of your beer. As well as converting the sugars from the malts into alcohol, yeast also adds a natural carbonation to the beer.
Hops - Beers’ ‘seasoning’, they are a crucial aspect of brewing. Depending on when they’re added to the brewing process, they are a powerful natural preservative, add bitterness, aroma and contribute to the head of the finished product. There are exceptions to this rule, such as Fuller’s Honeydew that has honey added to the final brew or Brewdog’s Elvis Juice, with the addition of grapefruit juice for an extra bitter kick. But it's those four principal ingredients, all of them natural, that make beer a drink that's full of goodness and such a versatile drink for pairing with food. Dear Friends, This month, the part of the Lord’s prayer we will ORRN DW VWDWHV
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”. I believe that in order to pray this prayer one needs to know the will of God on earth. I also believe that God’s will is to help people know him. God also wants people to relate with him as children relate with their parents. He wants us to obey his way and surrender our lives to him through his son Jesus. This implies living according to his commands. Praying for God’s will to be done also involves placing into God’s hands the struggles we HQFRXQWHU LQ RXU OLYHV ΖW PD\ EH D ȴ QDQFLDO decision, a relationship that is troubling us, or a responsibility that we have. It is a way of committing our lives to God. Praying for the will of God to be done in and through our lives on earth, as it is in heaven, can also mean that we want to be aligned with the will and purpose of God. Hence, we ask God to empower us to accomplish it. In so doing, we are asking God to help us to be the means whereby God’s purpose might be accomplished - that the justice and peace of God’s kingdom will be real in peoples’ lives. This prayer challenges us to be sensitive to the needs of the world and for guidance in the circumstances in which we encounter in our daily lives. Being sensitive to the needs of the world involve loving as God loves this world. There are many people who may be doing that already. For example, people who care for their relations and neighbours who are ill and others serving as volunteers in many charities. A quote attributed to Mother Theresa states: “Christ has no body now but yours No hands, no feet on earth but yours Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world Christ has no body now on earth but yours”. Hence, kudos to the people who have become 36 TICKHILL TODAY
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”. Christ’s body, hands, feet, and eyes on this earth. On the other hand, I wonder how many of us say ‘thank you’ to the love we receive from people who have become Christ-like to us and this world. I wonder if I can suggest to you to take some time this month to think of a person or organisation that is trying to change things for the better in our world. I wonder if you may also want to write a ‘thank you’ thought or prayer on a card. You may decide to post it to them (if possible) or keep it at a convenient place at home and refer to it frequently during the month. Finally, I wonder if you want to become part of Christ’s body by thinking about what you could contribute to the world today, or in the future, to make the world a better place. You may also pray and ask God to be at work in the world, perhaps in particular situations known to you. This can be local, national or global. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Honeysuckle I know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground DQG JURZ VORZO\ XSZDUGV XQWLO WKH\ Âż QG something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks RU WUHHV GHFRUDWLQJ WKHP ZLWK VSLGHU\ Ă€ RZHUV and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up its toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think DERXW WKH IRUHVW Ă€ RRU ZKHUH LW JURZV ZLOG $QG LW OLNHV LWV KHDG LQ WKH VXQ WR HQFRXUDJH SUROLÂż F Ă€ RZHULQJ
of the scent when I sit there. I’m trying to establish one over the porch too. As it’s against a wall I am having to make sure that it receives enough water. My father had one growing over an old tree in his garden. If you want to do the same I’d advise planting it near the extremity of the branch canopy rather than near the trunk ZKHUH URRW FRPSHWLWLRQ ZLOO EH ¿ HUFH 7UDLQ the stems upwards along some garden twine into the branches and the result will be breathtaking. I wanted summer fragrance and I have not been disappointed with the great Mr. T’s suggestion. Now is actually a good time to buy a honeysuckle as you can conduct a scent test DW WKH JDUGHQ FHQWUH +DSS\ VQLI¿ QJ
I grow it like clematis - I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to over the cool shade they require. Honeysuckle is not at all fussy about the support it needs. Thank you to patients and group members from Tickhill, Harworth and Wadworth who came to join us on the day. Tickhill Parish Room Many mums have been looking forward to the long summer holidays – and all of us will be looking forward to the hot weather continuing throughout those long weeks. How much easier it is to entertain the children when the weather is good. Some of our regular classes and events in the Parish Room have a summer break too. But some do carry on as normal. This includes Slimming World. They guarantee to meet every week of the year – school holidays, Christmas, New Year and Easter Bank Holidays make no difference to Slimming World. Meetings are every Thursday at 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. This is a very popular class with many coming to be encouraged and helped in their quest to lose weight. The Film Society takes a break until September, but will be back for a third season on the 20th September with a showing of I, Daniel Blake. Membership is £32 for 9 films, to include a special Christmas event on the 29th November! Ring Andy Dobson on 07340 708404 (evenings) for details of membership and future films. Our new Baby Massage Class (started on the 4th July) will continue during the summer months on Tuesday mornings from 10 – 11 a.m. The Ukulele Group will continue to meet during the summer with a smaller practice group. Anyone is welcome, but it will be more geared to ‘keeping your hand in’ than teaching. Meeting between 7 and 8 p.m. on a Monday evening as usual.
The 2017 Summer Reading Challenge will be launched in Tickhill Community Library on Saturday 15th July, encouraging children to read during the long summer break. It is open to children aged 4 to 11 years, who can read whatever they wish, the only proviso being, the book is borrowed from the Library. Each year the Challenge has a different theme and this year the theme is Animal Agents, illustrated by the UK’s bestselling children’s illustrator Tony Ross. Children will be able to pick up a starter pack from the Library and will have until Saturday 9th September to complete the challenge. Simply visit the Library three times over the summer holidays and fill in the starter pack booklet giving details of what books have been read. On each of the three visits the children will receive stickers to add to their pack, but watch out, some of them are a bit smelly! A presentation ceremony will be held in September to award medals and certificates to those children who have completed the Challenge. Challenge accepted? P.S. Keep a look out for the Treasure Map!
The Francophiles, WI and Coffee and Company continue with their once a month meetings during July and August and our own Saturday Coffee Mornings continue every Saturday throughout the summer months.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
If anyone would like to help at our Saturday Coffee Mornings – not necessarily every week, once a month would be great! Please ring me on 07840 419763, or Noreen Sweed (on 01302 743293) if you are interested. Monies raised by the Coffee Morning are donated to the Parish Room to help with the upkeep and repair of our lovely building. Volunteers at such events are so important, and keep all sorts of things running smoothly.

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - AUGUST 2017
By the time you read this we will be well into the summer holidays and all looking forward to a new year at school. Anti social behaviour is still to be addressed with a zero tolerance so if you see any such behaviour please report it on 101, everyone must work together to eliminate it. There have been several arrests for drug offences so if your children are not at home please make sure you know where they are and what they are doing. The recreation ground continues to attract antisocial behaviour patterns; please report this, this area is the property of everyone, please report crime, don’t leave it to someone else. If you feel threatened please call the police on 999, the more the police are alerted they more they are in a position to respond. Tickhill Town Council would like to remind you to keep hedges cut back. This is the growing season and complaints from pedestrians not being able to access the free passage on pavements, causing them to have to walk on the road, keep coming in and complaints have been forwarded to the Police about residents parking on the pavements causing obstructions. If you see footpaths, kerbs or such like in need of repair please report these to D.M.B.C. on 736000. The Children’s activities will be offered again this 6weeks holiday; Tuesday and Thursday mornings, a slight change 66 TICKHILL TODAY
from last year and a free breakfast will be provided, financed by the courtesy of the TESCO grant. A walking breakfast will be provided at 9.00 am for those requiring one. Sessions of activities are from 10.00 – 12.00am. Please come along and join in the fun. Mums, Dads, Grandparents and carers are welcome to stay for tea/coffee/ juice but if your children are under 8 years you will have to stay with them. The Council are looking for volunteers to run the activities, so if you enjoy football/rounders etc please give it serious consideration. These activities cannot go ahead without volunteers, please come forward and help is always needed to make drinks. Four years ago The Town Council introduced the Young Person of the Year Award (Under 11 yrs), the Alison Award for Achievement (11-25 year old.) and the Community Award. The Council are again looking for Nominations for the Awards. Please put these in writing on the form available from the library and Castlegate Cards. An independent committee has been formed to select the recipients of the awards. If you have any bookings for the pavilion/ tennis courts could you please contact Jamie on 07591179658, he is the Pavilion Manager and if you wish to alter arrangements please ensure you make further contact, as unfulfilled bookings will be charged for. Please also make sure you refer to the terms and conditions of hire: misuse will be charged for. Please have a good summer holiday.
