the August 2015 edition
“The best thing about Memories is making them” Summer already, and at the time of writing most schools are in their final week, so by the time you receive this, the school holidays will be here! As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays. My older, increasingly independent children aren’t as keen on activities with Mum as when they were younger but I am sure we will still enjoy some family time, while they are still all at home. Just another year before the first potentially leaves for University. August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this quiet period (and the rest of the time too). The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Saturday 15th August. Please be mindful of my usual tight turnaround time on the September magazine as I try to avoid spending too many hours glued to my computer during August. Please send in your contributions as always but do your very best to meet the copy deadline!
Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September ‘back to school’ magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

JOINT VENTURE PUTS CAREERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT A young illustrator is celebrating success after her designs were published in a new book that gives careers advice to teenagers. The book, Your Choice, Your Future, has been written by Doncaster-based life coach Sandra Greatorex who runs Butterfly Transformation and works with people of all ages across South Yorkshire who are starting or changing careers. Sandra was coaching 18-year-old Sarah Bradley who was undecided about what to do after leaving sixth-form when she spotted her hidden talents as an illustrator and gave her the opportunity to collaborate on the book. Sarah is now studying History and History of Art at Reading University and is delighted with the finished product and the valuable experience she gained. “I wish I had been given the opportunity to read this book when I was younger as it really helped me to consider my choices,” she commented. Sandra explained: “Your Choice, Your Future was a book I always had a passion to write after the experiences of my own children and the young people I have coached. It is aimed at people aged 13-14 and is a practical, step by step guide to all their options. For more information about the book and details of how to order a copy, go to http://www.butterflytransform.co.uk/shop/ T

Strictly Back in Town! Appearing exclusively at TFest; Doncaster....are you ready to welcome back to his hometown Chris Madin, lead singer from Strictly Come Dancing and his wonderful, wonderful orchestra! Chris and his 14 piece band will take festival goers on a fabulous journey through the musical eras; from swing to rock there will most definitely be a song for everyone. “I cannot wait to be performing back here in Doncaster” Chris tells us. “I have recently moved home from London, bringing my wife and two small children with me and there is nothing like being back up North! I have worked and travelled all over the world, and most of my work is still in London I am there every week recording, so it is great that I finally have a base back here in Doncaster near my family and friends” Chris left Doncaster aged just 11 to study music at Chethams Music School in Manchester. An accomplished piano player he also became a renowned vocalist, working professionally from the age of 16 providing vocals to commercials, video games and theme tunes, developing a reputation as a sought after session singer for the industry. After several years as one of the most sought after ‘voices for hire’ Strictly Come Dancing came along and Chris has now been a regular singer alongside Tommy Blaze for 5 years. He didn’t stop there...X Factor naturally wanted a slice of the action and in 2014 Chris provided the vocal arrangements for the groups and the male artists. “Much of what I do takes place behind the scenes. Arranging scores and music for artists is a big part of my job and is what I have done most recently for Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. That was my first Eurovision, having been asked every year, but been unable to make it because of work commitments. It was enormous fun, if not hard work, and yes it is something I would do again!” I cannot wait to play at TFest and bring along my band. I have some of the best musicians in Thanks to Reanne Mayes of Flawless Expressions for the Photography
the country joining me and it will be a fantastic show. I heard of TFest in 2013 through my family and followed it on Facebook and Twitter. I loved their ethos of bringing live music through local bands to local people. Everybody should have access to live music, especially children. They need to be inspired and I am hoping to do that this year myself with my wonderful orchestra. “ “We are really excited to be bringing Chris to TFest this year” says organiser Steve Madin “We wanted to make sure that there was a very definite family appeal to this year’s show, and we know that Chris, who will play for an hour and a half will bring something for everyone. We have a fantastic mix of bands this year, with this one being the real difference and the real family attraction. ”Chris will play from 4:30 on the main stage at the Cricket Club. TFest takes place on 26th September 2015 in Tickhill. Tickets are priced at £15 per adult £6 per child or £40 per family ticket (2 adults and 3 children). Tickets are available online at www.tfest.co.uk or though KSM or Castlegates DIY in Tickhill.

Arts Review & what’s going on - AUGUST 2015
Caro in Yorkshire (Yorkshire Sculpture Park)
Every now and then you make a discovery and at the end of June the DNweekeND was on in Doncaster – it’s a loosely structured arts festival, involving many local people, with lots of things going on all over the town, some seem quite random, others programed and organised. So I went to have tea with Wendy Cope (poet) at CAST, and an excellent tea we got there – Doncaster’s equivalent to Betty’s… and the small audience had a very pleasant time of it, poetry, chat, tea and cakes… what better? I then stumbled out into the bright June afternoon of Sir Nigel Gresley Square to find the Doncaster Youth Jazz orchestra playing. Oh Wow! They are wonderful! They needed an audience 10 times the size of we few, who sat and enjoyed their magnificent playing. What a treat! Then, Later that day in the grand Mansion House salon the Quirky Choir performed a concert including the ‘Making Music’ commission, themed on Doncaster Market, they had worked with composer Anna Braithwaite who had devised a really challenging piece of music for the choir. They were tremendous, a superb setting and wonderful fun event. The Quirky Choir is run by Janet Wood, at The Point – home of DArts - on Wednesdays from 6.45pm to 8.45pm. This concert will be broadcast via Radio 3 at some point in the Autumn. A couple of weeks later I discovered Doncaster’s Brewery & Tap on Young Street ( Waterdale). I was not the designated driver that evening, so I could do a little tasting, and have to report that it’s very nice beer they make there, and you can wander through the brewery as its just behind the bar! All sorts goes on there, Art classes happen and Morris dancers practice in the upstairs room, but what I went to was an evening of the spoken word and poetry. Well Spoken! This happens every second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm - 13th Aug the next oneand is an informal get together for writers to read their work, and it can get very lively. We had some excellent work put before us by writers aged from 20 to 94. And then there is a Writers’ Group which also is a Monthly event - check dates with the venue. It’s a support network/critical friend
to writers of all types. Bring a piece of poetry, prose or script to read and discuss. All very welcome. More information: m.jenkinson@blueyonder.co.uk http:// doncasterbrewery.co.uk/brewery-tap/ Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15. Exhibition: at Cusworth Hall until 20 September Toys Were Us!. We all have fond memories of our favourite childhood toys. Perhaps we have even lovingly hidden them away in a cupboard or drawer. This exhibition brings together some of the most iconic examples of toys within our collection from Victorian times to the present day. Maybe you will spot something you recognise –I have found a few from my childhood in there! Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery until 13 September Doncaster Art Club The annual display of work by members of the Doncaster Art Club is always one of our most popular exhibitions. This year’s exhibition includes paintings, drawings and sculptures in a variety of media, with many of the works being for sale Until 13 September Departing from Doncaster Celebrating Doncaster’s fine railway heritage, by bringing together an eclectic mix of railway artefacts and memorabilia from the Doncaster Museum Service and the Doncaster Grammar School Railway Collection. Many significant items will be on display for the first time, as we recognise the importance of Doncaster as the starting point for many a great railway journey. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: Scicluna Deli, just next to Doncaster Market - an exhibition of work from students at the HUB – Doncaster College www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 20 September Elements of Architecture: Corridors and Welbeck Tunnels. This is a rare chance to see the part of Rem Koolhaas’ exhibition Elements of Architecture which was influenced by the Welbeck Estate. The exhibition focusses on the ‘Corridor’ display from Elements of Architecture, and explores the vast underground ballroom and tunnels at Welbeck. They were built by the 5th Duke of Portland in the 19th century, and the exhibition presents theories about this mythologized architecture through film and hotography. Elements of Architecture was originally exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014. www.harleygallery.co.uk

Back Pain – Physiotherapy can help. A recent survey of 1000 people with back pain aged 25-65, found that more than a third thought bed rest was the best remedy. In fact the opposite is true! Exercise such as swimming or Pilates can help with muscle & joint pain and your Physiotherapist will advise you on the right sort of exercises to help reduce your pain and stop it from returning. Back pain is a ‘Musculoskeletal disorder’ (MSD) which also includes neck pain and repetitive strain injury. One of the main causes of people being off sick from work, MSDs are effectively treated with Physiotherapy, with one study showing that 80% of people who had physiotherapy for their MSD were able to carry on working without going off sick Many people mistakenly believe that you always needed a GP referral to see a Physiotherapist, which isn’t the case. If you are suffering with back pain, the quicker you can get to see a physiotherapist the better, so a speedy self referral is key, as NHS waiting times are usually very long! A Physiotherapist will first check if you have any serious health problems that could be connected to your back pain. They will then find the cause of your pain & look at ways to help prevent further problems, using effective methods such as manual treatments and acupuncture, an appropriate exercise plan and pain relief. Here at Blizard Physiotherapy we have a friendly team of highly qualified Physiotherapists and massage therapists available at flexible appointment times to suit your needs. We also offer Pilates and gentle exercise classes. We are committed to improving the health and well being of our patients and enabling them to continue with an active and pain free lifestyle.

During the week, the school also held the KS1 and KS2 sports days. “The weather was brilliant and it was wonderful to see all the children taking part, they all appeared to enjoy the day, developing many important skills and attributes. In addition, the children were fantastically well supported by parents, with around 200 parents and carers coming to each session. The raffles and refreshments raised £201.80 for school fund. Many thanks also to the PTA for organizing the selling of ice creams on the day. They sold over 250 lollies and raised a whopping £126.” Mr McLean, the headteacher, explained.

St Mary’s School St Marys go to Caythorpe Court On 18th – 22nd May 2015, St Mary’s Primary School pupils from Years 5 and 6 went to PGL, Caythorpe Court. When we arrived we all had to take our heavy bags to our tents. Our guide, Frazer, helped some of us. After our tour we had our first tea and then it was camp fire where we played and sang songs. It was an amazing experience and everyone enjoyed it greatly!
One of the highlights would have to be the vertical challenge. Another favourite activity was definitely the trapeze because it was nerve wracking. You had to climb up a tall wooden pole and haul yourself up onto a shaky platform. The feeling after completing the activities was really exhilarating. The food was delicious and it was always different every day. Giovanni Filippo, Camran Cassar and Sebastian Durdy – Year 6

TICKHILL BOWLING CLUB
People of all ages including children and juveniles play this delightful sport, so come and give it a try. Mums and Dads – bring the children along - sets of bowls including junior bowls are available for you to use. The game offers fresh air, exercise, fun and you can all compete on equal terms. Give me a ring so that we can arrange a time to suit you. My contact number is 07891907733
THE CLUB’S SCARBOROUGH COACH TRIP was a great success. Despite the forecast of very bad weather, it turned out to be a lovely day with many a sunburnt head on display at the end of it. The venue, where we had booked a green for four hours, was very well appointed with good food, a bar and all the usual facilities. The green was a bit wet at first but quickly dried out and the competition was quite fierce. Buckley’s Coaches did us proud with a modern clean bus with an excellent driver who was bang on time for every stop and pick up. Many thanks to Lynda, Tony and Tommy for organising the event - members have asked that we do a repeat visit next season In addition, many thanks to Lynda, Tony and Tommy for organising the Club Fun Day on Sunday 28th. The hard fought contest was eventually won by Keith Johnson and Irene Lockwood who beat Frank Grainger and Audrey Keith in the final. Thanks are also extended to all those taking part and to all those who donated sweets and savouries for an excellent buffet after the event. We opened the green for people to “have a go” during the Tickhill Gala on the 4th July and had many visitors with promises of return visits by some of them During the school summer holidays, Tickhill Town Council in collaboration with DMBC organises “Diversionary Activities” on the recreation ground. This gives children an opportunity to play football, rounders and other sports under supervision and the watch-full eye of their parents/grandparents. This year the bowling club is taking part to encourage children as well as parents/grandparents to try our sport. The events are being held from 1.30 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons throughout the summer break and refreshments will be available. COMPETITION NEWS Our Midweek League (Played 7 and lost 4) and our Over 60 Singles (Played 10 and lost 4) teams are still struggling a bit but our Over 60 Doubles team has won 8 of its 9 games whilst our Doubles League team has now won 3 of its 6 games The following are the home matches for August. A Life Changed Through a Life Shared Denis and Linda Birkin from Conisbrough are Carers supporting a young man named Ben, who is on the autistic spectrum, through the provision of a pioneering service called Shared Lives. The couple, who also have children of their own, have looked after Ben within their home since he was a baby – providing foster care up to the age of 18, following which they wanted to ensure Ben could remain in the family environment they had created for him. To do this Denis and Linda became Shared Lives Carers, under a scheme delivered by Doncaster charity The Avalon Group. Shared Lives offers adults with a wide range of disabilities and mental health issues the chance to become part of an extended family by living in the home of a trained carer. For those participating in the scheme this can be either on a long or short term basis, with options for day breaks and respite relief. For Ben it means the ability to live a fulfilled life surrounded by all the things he loves and all the things he needs. Even the detached bungalow in which the family lives, was purchased to allow Ben to play music and sing as loud as he likes! He is also a valued, active member of the community, playing drums and singing at his local church alongside Denis who plays trumpet and Linda who plays guitar, and has a great passion for baking and art.
Message of thanks from Graham & Margaret Thorp Graham and Margaret would like to thank everyone for their good wishes and kind messages after their long stays in hospital, it has been a great help to have the positive support from so many of Tickhill's people. They are both now at home and are steadily making positive progress. Kind regards, Graham & Margaret Thorp T
This is made possible by a life lived alongside people who care for him in the same way any family would. Denis and Linda have provided a home and a level of support that means he has flourished in ways which a residential care setting may not have been able to achieve. The Birkins were recognised for their level of care at the Pride of Doncaster Awards 2014, receiving the ‘Carers of the Year’ trophy. “The Avalon Group have been a really great help to us, delivering excellent quality training with commitment and dedication. Shared Lives really has to be the way forward.” said Denis The Avalon Group are currently looking to recruit new Shared Lives Carers throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas. If you would like to find out more, or apply to become a Carer please contact Alison on 01302 910 191, or visit www. avalongroup.org.uk for more information. T

community projects chosen from the UK Online Centres network of over 8000. Then at the beginning of June we were invited to the Sheffield HQ of Tinder Foundation to accept National Research Partner status, forming part of a panel of 16 community organisations from across the UK who will test and trial new initiatives that will eventually be rolled out all across the UK.
News from the Edlington Hilltop Centre We are very proud to report that the Edlington Hilltop Centre has been successful in 3 major bids to become part of nationally important initiatives, bringing in funding for the Centre and Community. Since August 2014 our Volunteer Community Health Champions have been working hard with our partners The Edlington GP Practice, The Nayar GP Practice and the I.J. Kellam Dental Practice at the Martinwells Centre to help patients rate their experience of healthcare services at the centre. The surveys, as part of “iWantGreatCare” and the “Friends and Family Test”, have helped us to work co-operatively with the Practice Managers and their dedicated staff to secure improved health care services and frontline support for the whole community. Our Health Champions have also taken the time to understand individual patient’s knowledge of the internet and how they access it for health information, as well as undertaking “Social Prescribing” which involves helping patients to access community led and free services, helping them live a full and active life within our community. This has included free fire alarms, community care alarms, food bank vouchers, support services, benefits advice, carbon monoxide detectors, free computer classes, dance class vouchers, wellbeing services and many many more. These services are provided by the Hilltop Centre and its partners such as Edlington Community Organisation, South Yorkshire Hotspots and many others, who have been a major part our of referral process. In May 2015 Tinder Foundation and NHS England invited the Hilltop Centre to Public Health England’s offices in London and awarded us with NHS Pathfinder and National Flagship Centre Status, one of only 8
We would like to thank the staff from the Nayar Practice, The Edlington Practice and I.J. Kellam Dental Practice as well as our network of local referral partners who have worked with us to deliver this major project for our community. Most importantly we would like to thank all of the patients who have so far taken part in the scheme at the Martinwells Centre. Being an NHS Pathfinder project will see our initiative modelled and developed by NHS England in order for it to be rolled to communities from all across the country. To celebrate our success we are offering everybody in the community free and fully personalised computer or tablet courses, along with luxury tea and coffee every time they visit to complete their course. You could also take the course from home by visiting www. learnmyway.com and choosing “Create an Account.” Enter “Centre Code 3420467” and password hilltop1 to start your learning. You will then be eligible for 1-2-1 support at the Hilltop Centre or a home visit from our Tutor for Digital Inclusion. The offer expires on 31st December 2015 so act now to take part! Footpaths cleared by STWCC students Big thank you to Sir Thomas Wharton Community College staff and students who with help from DMBC community warden and stronger communities staff member all came to Tickhill on the 1st of July, to help clear the footpath from the recreation ground Tithes Lane through to Common Lane.
Methodist Minister Dear Friends, August is a month of harvests. In my local dialect, the month of August is called ‘Dzifuu”. It is translated as ‘too much to eat’. To some of us, we have too much to eat and indulge in. Just about a month ago, I picked up a news item that a supermarket chain has now decided to donate food to charity everyday in order to cut down waste. It was reported that a charity would pick up the items free of charge and turn them into meals for those in need. This company was working under pressure in order to feed the hungry in our society. However, it is also reported that almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. More than half of this is food and drink, which could be eaten. The irony of this issue is that not everybody has enough to eat or drink. Moses, a leader of the Jews, is reported to have instructed God’s people regarding looking after the poor. ‘“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you...”’ (Leviticus 23: 22) (New International Version). Poor people are always with us whilst we throw away good food and drink. Unfortunately, some of us have reasons for not helping them. Some of the reasons are that poor people are lazy, scroungers, wasteful, cannot manage their resources or would
The photos show the footpath before and after. 26 bags of vegetation were collected from the bowling green. Once again a real big thank you from Tickhill Town Council and especially from myself. Nigel Cannings not use the help given them appropriately. Moses’ instruction however, did not ask us to find a reason not to help the poor. We are to make sure that they are catered for because it can be you, a friend or a relation next time. I wonder what steps we can take to reduce waste in our homes and use the excesses we have to help the poor amongst us. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to readers to consider making our communities ‘poverty free’ without depending on agencies, which have their resources being cut to the core. It is my belief that if each one of us gives some help to the poor, their conditions will change for the better. We don’t need hundreds of pounds to do so. There is another adage in my language, which says, ‘little drops of water makes a mighty ocean’. Just give it a try and put a smile on a poor person’s face. Have a blessed month.

The Real Junk Food Project hits Doncaster! Doncaster now has its very own Junk Food Project. A small group of people have been nurturing and growing an idea in Doncaster since February which has now taken shape and root as The Real Junk Food Project Doncaster. Doncaster has joined the list of growing projects which began in Yorkshire in 2013 and have quickly spread with projects in France, Australia, South Africa, and Germany. The idea is to encourage thought about food production and distribution, and specifically, food waste. It’s about sharing resources fairly, with the ultimate aim of abolishing food waste altogether. So far Real Junk Food Projects have - Saved 108 tonnes of rescued food - Fed 58,000 people (most notably with no adverse effects) - Received £102,000 in ‘Pay As You Feel’ donations. Pay As You Feel means everyone is treated equally whatever their circumstances. People are encouraged to pay for our meals with skills, time and energy. Fiona Cahill has been leading Doncaster’s project, rescuing food that would otherwise be wasted from local businesses and homes and serves it as tasty quality meals on a ‘Pay As You Feel’ basis. The project uses the kitchen at the Hallcross pub, donated for use by the landlord. The local authority has granted The Real Junk Food Project Doncaster a “5” food hygiene rating. Volunteers wanted We have people cooking, serving tables and washing up, and we need more to fill slots to be able to operate on regular days. We need: Drivers and people with them to help intercept food waste and any usable food you would be
throwing away yourself from a business, however large or small, or from your home. We need to source and fund a van. We are looking out for people who are determined and energetic, as we move at a very fast pace, and can think creatively. With available skills we can plan rotas/fill slots to operate regular days and expand much more following the good start! We hope to be able to provide food hygiene training to a level 2 and we can record hours as volunteer hours and provide references if needed. Food Aware have existed in the area for 12 years rescuing food passed its best before and we are pleased to have them in Doncaster and to work alongside them, we seek like-minded people to work with, and are also a part of a local food forum with other community projects and Doncaster food banks working together to hopefully develop actions. Doncaster’s Unbloq have donated us a website http://www.therealjunkfoodprojectdoncaster. co.uk. The Doncaster branch of the GMB union has sponsored us £250 to help with start-up expenses.

Tickhill and District Lions Club A busy Summer for Tickhill and District Lions with 3 Galas and a Summer Bash to report. On Friday 26th June The Scarbrough Arms hosted our first Summer Bash in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Live music from The Sixties Mix Band and a Fish and Chip supper were enjoyed by everyone and the event was a great success. The Treasurer is totting up the figures and we will report the donation to the Cancer Detection Trust next month. We hope this is the first of an annual event in the Lions calendar. We attended Bawtry and Wadworth Galas earlier in June and then the Tickhill Gala at the beginning of July. It’s great to see so many people attending these local events and the weather at Tickhill contributed to a record sell out of strawberries and cream! Feedback from many people is that it was the best gala they had seen for many years. Thanks to everyone who supported us at all the events. For the 35th year running the Lions of District 105C are proud to be organising their Annual Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled on Saturday 8th August 2015. It takes place at Sandall Park Doncaster ·Opening by Doncaster’s Civic Mayor Cllr Paul Wray @ 11.30am. Entertainment music & PA throughout the day from DJ Lion Chris & DJ Legs, Tony Lister (George Formby) - 1pm, Lisa Tetley’s School of Dance - 2pm, Take a Bow – 2.45pm, Presentations – 3 30pm. Let’s hope the sun shines on all the events this summer. T

garden view
Allotments make a comeback! During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy! There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge. Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses. And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the
supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of food-related concerns seems to be growing exponentially. In the absence of clear leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food. Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that. Price and availability varies around the country. In many areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. Registering your interest may help to encourage the search for more suitable areas – perhaps you could suggest areas to your local council? If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits! Useful Website http://www.nsalg.org.uk/

Catch a Bus!
I'm writing this during 'Catch a Bus Week'. Some of us do this every week, many of us never, so it seems a good time to report on our bus services. To get the bad news out of the way first, it is fruitless complaining that the direct services we had 15 years ago to Sheffield, Meadowhall, Bawtry and Harworth are no more. They were not money-spinners for the operators and funding for public subsidy of bus services has been cut year on year to the extent that it can do no more than keep some evening and Sunday services on the road. In the present economic climate, only profitable services will run. However, what we have is a lot better than many residents probably realise. Timing, about which there were many complaints, has improved greatly – at least, until the Summer of road works disrupted bus and car alike. Our principal service is Stagecoach 22 from Doncaster to Worksop, half-hourly during the day on weekdays, hourly in the evenings and on Sundays. It is timetabled to take 22 minutes from the Buttercross to Doncaster Interchange, next door to the railway station. Concessionary passes may be used after 0930 on Monday to Friday, any time at the weekend and Bank Holidays. The best value for fare payers is the Day Rider at £3.90 which allows unlimited travel on Stagecoach buses in Doncaster borough and the Dearne Valley; there is a weekly version (Megarider) at £ 12. There are other tickets of this sort for day trips or regular travel to Worksop and Nottinghamshire. Children under the age 5 travel free (provided they don't occupy a seat needed by a fare-paying passenger), up to 15 years the fare is two-thirds of the full fare. Special fares for students aged 16 and above are obtained through their place of study.
Regular passengers queried why zero fare tickets are being issued again after a period when it was enough to put the pass onto the ticket machine. Apparently passes were 'waved' over the machine and the journey not recorded, which meant no reimbursement to the operator! Thus the reversion to tickets for everyone. First buses operate the 205 service which runs usually 8 times a day but takes a lot longer to get into Doncaster, between 42 and 53 minutes according to which employment sites it serves en route. It does a loop through Wong Lane, which helps many residents and serves The Dome and Racecourse. A £4 First Day ticket provides unlimited travel on First buses within the borough. SYPTE no longer prints timetables and their Information Centres have closed. However, the customer service desk within Doncaster Interchanges has timetables, which are produced by the operators. Stagecoach has a colourful timetable which includes all their services in our area. Why not leave the car at home for a day, save the hassle of finding and paying for a parking spot and try public transport!

Tickhill and District
Local History Society
June and July are often quiet months for the Society but not so this year. In June 47 members had a wonderful afternoon at Hodsock Priory when George Buchanan showed us areas not normally seen including rooms under the house, now full of modern boilers and heating controls but which once were the “downstairs” rooms from which servants toiled to feed and look after the gentry upstairs. George gave an hilarious potted history of his ancestors and the visit concluded with a splendid afternoon tea baked on the premises.
In July our traditional summer outing was to the old quarter of Hull where we began at the Slavery museum. Our Guide, Lloyd Powell, gave us a thought provoking insight into slavery and just how far back into history it actually went. We then went from Roman mosaics, to 4th century boats, dinosaurs’ bones and Anglo-Saxon treasures. The Streetlife Museum gave us 200 years of transport history and
a 1940s high street. The word on the street was ‘Ooooh, we had one of those when we were young!’ And as has become the practice we finished up in a very old pub! A great day, and not enough time to fit everything in that Old Hull has to offer. Our thanks go to Dorothy Bradley and Sally Tyas for organising two interesting and enjoyable outings. Finally, Membership renewals. The membership fee remains unchanged at £6 / head and can be paid in the Library. Please enclose cash or a cheque made out to Tickhill and District Local History Society in a sealed envelope marked for Lesley Nicholson and hand this to the library staff. Don’t forget to include+ your name if paying by cash! Please use this method of payment if possible to cut down congestion at our AGM in September. Meantime have a great summer holiday.

Tickhill Town Council - AUGUST 2015
By the time you read this we will be well into the summer holidays and all looking forward to a new year at school. Tickhill Town Council must add at this stage (end of June) that the Christmas arrangements have already started, the suppliers of the Christmas lights have a new contract and the road closure applications have been sent to D.M.B.C. Tickhill Town Council would like to remind you to keep hedges cut back. This is the growing season but complaints of pedestrians not being able to access the free passage on pavements, causing them to have to walk on the road, keep coming in. Members of the Town Council are working with a group of younger members of our Community from Sir Thomas Wharton Community College to assist in the cutting back Public Footpaths so hopefully there will be some improvement there. Complaints have been forwarded to the Police about residents parking on the pavements causing obstructions, there is to be a crack down on this in the next few weeks by the police. Anti social behaviour is still to be addressed with a zero tolerance so if you see any such behaviour please report it on 101, everyone must work together to eliminate it. There have been several arrests for drug offences so if your children are not at home please make sure you know where they are and what they are doing. On a very serious matter a fire arm was found on
the steps of the pavilion and has been handed to the police, and they confirmed having such a weapon in a Public place is illegal. The Diversionary activities will be offered again this 6weeks holiday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 1.30pm – 3.30pm. Please come along and join in the fun. Mums, Dads, Grandparents and carers are welcome to stay for tea/ coffee juice but if your children are under 8 years you will have to stay with them. The Council are looking for volunteers to help run the activities, so if you enjoy football please give it serious consideration. The Bowls club will also be opening up their facilities for Junior Bowls. “Give it a go” Two years ago The Town Council introduced the Young Person of the Year Award and the Community Award and this year there will be the Alison Award for Achievement for an 11-25 year old. The Council are looking for Nominations for the Awards. Please put these in writing to myself the Town Clerk as soon as possible. An independent committee has been formed to choose the recipients of the awards. If you have any bookings for the pavilion/ tennis courts could you please contact Jamie on 07591179658 and if you wish to alter arrangements please ensure you make further contact. Please have a good summer holiday.

Cllr Raymond Lewis Hill sadly passed away on 3rd July 2015 Ray Hill was elected to the Council in 2003.
He became Mayor in 2004 and apart from 1 year he has held the Office to this date and never missed a full council meeting. As both Mayor and Councillor he has fulfilled his duties with integrity and honesty, and has had the ability to listen to others and get on with the job in hand. As Mayor he has been the public face of Tickhill Town Council, opening and leading the major events in the Tickhill calendar. He has instigated improvements and projects throughout the Town and to many residents regarded as “Mr Tickhill”. His services to the Community were recognised last year when he received the Community Award for outstanding services to the Town. A pillar of our Community, a role model for those wishing to take on Public duties Sadly missed but never forgotten One of Tickhill’s True Gentlemen

Tickhill Horticultural Society The June meeting was opened by Pat Baldwin who advised the members that our Chairman Ray Hill was very ill in hospital. Just over a week later, during the afternoon of Friday 3rd July, Ray passed away. He will be greatly missed by the Society members along with so many others in Tickhill. He was a tireless, proactive worker for the Society, our 'village', the Methodist Church and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gillian and the family as they face such a sad loss. The Society stall at the Scout and Guide Gala the day after Ray's death went ahead as planned, raising £125 of which £40 was donated to the Gala organisers. Many thanks to everyone who donated plants and helped on the day. Our June speaker, David Newman from Lincoln, explained to us that looking after 'Ericaceous Plants' was not as difficult as we may have thought. A very interesting evening. Our August speaker on Thursday 27th will be our old friend Don Whitton who maintains the National Collection of Euphorbias on an allotment in Harthill, Sheffield. As you would expect his theme is 'Euphorbias' and there will be plants for sale. Methodist Schoolroom at 7.15pm. Visitors welcome (£3).
