Welcome to the August 2019 edition

Today

Tickhill Dog Kabin Grooming Spa

“Some of the best memories are made in flip flops” Kellie Elmore - Author Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. August can be a slow time for lots of shops and businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday or enjoying a different routine which takes them to other shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the year too)! Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have 10 pairs of tickets for The Festival of Food and Drink taking place at Clumber Park in September. This is a great day out, look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. With 10 pairs available it really is worth a go! The September issue will be delivered to you very late August or for many in the first few days of September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Monday 19th August. As always, I will take some time away from desk and my computer screen during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

DONCASTER

CANCER DETECTION TRUST T By the time you read this the holiday season will be in full swing – let’s hope for good weather for everyone. We are thrilled to say the Midsummer Walk has so far raised £6,406. There is still some outstanding sponsorship money which we hope will eventually bring the total to nearer £7,000. Thank you so much to everyone who took part, their sponsors, Thorne Rural Lions who worked extremely hard and Vizuality who designed and printed all the paperwork. There is a coffee morning at the Church Hall, Hatfield Woodhouse on Saturday, 3rd August from 10-12 noon where there will be raffle prizes to be won. Proceeds will be donated to DCDT. We will have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August selling scarves, £2 mystery parcels and other goodies. The Show opens at 12 noon with free admission and free parking. Check out their website: auckleyshow.co.uk. There is lots to do and see for all the family including free competitions. Have you seen the displays for the “Happiness Movement” in Frenchgate Centre? They are designed to get people involved in various projects. There is a garden seating area outside Boots on the ground floor and two i-pads in the Centre where the public can send messages as well as make a donation to DCDT. Also we have fundraising packs available with lots of ideas to raise money for us! If you would like a pack to organise an event on our behalf please get in touch with us. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt. co.uk. Our Prostate Cancer appeal for the biopsy machine is slowly gathering strength and you can follow our progress with the “thermometer” on our website. All donations are gratefully received whether they are pennies or pounds. Just think – if 1,000 people donated £150 we would reach our £150,000 goal ! Food for thought…..?

HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES WALKING NETBALL T

Harworth and Bircotes Walking Netball goes from strength to strength as we approach the start of their third year as a club. We play every Monday at the pavilion in Bircotes 1-2 pm followed by a cup of tea and a chat afterwards. The ladies have also been successful in the North Hykeham tournament beating teams from Lincoln, Grantham and North Hykeham. We are playing in another tournament in August so hope to be just as successful then. A few of the ladies have been playing alongside some younger ladies in the Doncaster Back to Netball Leisure League as a team called Harworth Misfits. They have won back to back championships without losing a game and scoring over 450 goals. We embrace all ages and standards of ability and are always welcoming new players. COMMUNITY CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES IN TICKHILL COMMUNITY LIBRARY

TICKHILL COMMUNITY LIBRARY T The Summer Reading Challenge was launched in Tickhill Community Library on Saturday 13th July and will run until Monday 9th September. It takes place each year during the school holidays and this year the Summer Reading Challenge will be called Space Chase, an out of this world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge will join our super space family, “The Rockets,” for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens and they are able to register in Tickhill Community Library. By making three further visits to the library and borrowing books on each occasion the children will receive stickers on each visit and on completion of the scheme they will receive a medal and a certificate, which will be presented at the Library’s special medal presentation ceremonies in September. As usual there will also be a Treasure Map, the winner who locates the hidden treasure will receive a book token. Even more activities than in previous years are planned in the Library this summer, for example a new weekly games club, how to look after your cat or dog, Sam’s Safari and many more. Tickets for these events cost £1 and usually sell out well before each event so please contact the Library now if you are interested in any and don’t have tickets yet.

Barnsley: Underneath the Stars Festival 2-4 August music festival organized by kate Rusby and Team with Billy Bragg, The Unthanks, Kate herself and many many more underthestarsfest.co.uk Jean Rush (Art at the Deli)

August is traditionally the quiet month but there is still things to do and see, not least some open air events. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery NB now open Thursday to Sunday Exhibition: until 8 September DONCASTER ART CLUB: paintings and drawings in a variety of media by this thriving local art club. Until 15 September ‘HANDS UP!’ From brushing our teeth first thing in the morning to turning off the bedside lamp last thing at night, the human hand is indispensable, not just for everything we do but for those artifacts with which we do them with. ‘Hands Up’ brings together a display of art and artefact from the collection of Heritage Doncaster, celebrating the human hand. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: This month you will find paintings by JEAN RUSH www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 22 September IN MY SHOES a show of self portraiture including the not so young YBAs Tracy Emin and Grayson Perry www.harleygallery.co.uk National Trust, Hardwick Hall Wednesday – Sunday, 11am-5pm until 3 November. After receiving high levels of interest and popularity, ‘WE ARE BESS’ photographic exhibition has been extended. The exhibition features 20 modern women, from household names to the local community, including Sue Perkins and The Right Reverend Libby Lane. These women responded to the retold story of Bess of Hardwick, the woman who built Hardwick Hall, and reflect on the similarities between the challenges Bess faced and their own experiences. www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Its summer shut down www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Bassetlaw Museum, Retford until 10 August ‘FATHER AND SON’ BY KIP AND RICHARD COMBES. Kip Combes (1924-2013) was a prominent figure on the local art scene and a president of the Worksop Society of Artists, while his son Richard is a highly respected New York-based artist who has exhibited internationally and has work in major private collections worldwide. During the early stages of World War II, Kip Combes was evacuated to Retford with his family and, apart from a period of living in Manchester, he remained in the town for the rest of his life. Richard was brought up in Retford and worked as an architect in the UK before moving to New York City. There he earned Master’s degree in painting at the New York Academy of Art and his remarkable skills and mastery of techniques have earned him multiple awards and a full membership of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Although many of Richard’s works are realistic representations of people and objects, they are not just

skilful depictions of subjects. His art transports viewers into the middle of an intriguing, unfinished story and makes them wonder about how it continues. This exceptional artistry transforms everyday spaces and objects into extraordinary images that are both absorbing and haunting. 17 August – 5 October WEATHILL ART GROUP www.bassetlaw.museum.gov.uk Yorkshire Sculpture Park The Weston, the new £3.6million gallery and restaurant at YSP has won three RIBA prizes. It is winner of RIBA Yorkshire Award 2019 and RIBA Yorkshire Building of the Year Award 2019. YSP also received the special category award for RIBA Yorkshire Client of the Year Award 2019. So if you visit for no other reason, go and see what a good piece of modern architecture looks like! In the Weston Gallery you will find a beautiful exhibition by Punjabi artists THUKRAL & TAGRA whose work discusses the problems faced by subsistence farmers in the Punjab. Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) is the American artist who took sculpture off the plinth and made it in steel and stainless steel. His work isn’t always beautiful, its hard edged and tough, but will be worth seeing, and hopefully the galleries will be well filled and stunning. www.ysp.co.uk Cupola Gallery until 24 August MAKERS MARK a group exhibition focusing on artwork where the touch of the artists’ hand is visible www.cupolagallery.com Gardens everywhere: The NGS open garden scheme is now in full swing with gardens opening up and down the country and many in our locality throughout the summer. These activities are put on for the benefit of families and we desperately need volunteers to help supervise and make the copious amounts of juice for the children and cups of tea/coffee for the adults. The coaching of the children will be carried out, under supervision, by ActiveFusion. Please note the activities cannot go ahead if the conditions are inclement and could be cancelled at the last minute. The activities have been able to proceed by grace of the financial backing of Tickhill Town Council, a grant from Doncaster Sheffield Airport and support from The Blakemore Foundation in the form of refreshments which will be provided from 12.30 onwards.

VOGLIA D’ITALIA T (the Italian Society for South Yorks and North Notts) would like to thank all those who supported us at the Tickhill Gala and particularly those who entered our two competitions. The picture quiz to name the places in Italy was won by Roger Dunstan. The competition to guess the number of pasta pieces in the jar was won by John Grime who’s estimate was 240 against the actual number of 239. The prize for each competition was a bottle of Prosecco. Our meetings for next season will resume on September 6th in the Tickhill Pavilion. Further information: 01709 370895

ANYONE FOR TENNIS? T On Sunday 23 June, Tickhill Tennis Club held their summer 'Wimbledon', mixed doubles tournament.

After three hours of competition, two couples eventually drew on points, resulting in an exciting play-off to determine the winners. Sunita Brittain and Graham Simpson won and are therefore the winners of the tournament.

TICKHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY It’s a busy time of the year for us at the Tickhill Horticultural Society, with the 32nd Annual Show on 7th September approaching with speed!

Plans are well in hand for the event, and we’re sure that many of you are planning to enter the various categories in the Show, whether they be flowers, vegetables, fruit, handicraft, art, baking or preserves. The children have a number of categories just for them, so all you mums and dads – why not give your kids some encouragement and see if they can win a prize! We also have entries for your pets, so if you think you’ve got the “happiest pet”, “scruffiest pet” or “most loveable pet”, this could be for you! Schedules and entry forms are available around Tickhill, so why not have a go? Members of the Society manned a stall at the Gala in early July, with many plants for sale. Thanks

20

T

to everyone who provided plants for sale, for manning the stall (or should that be ‘personning’ the stall?) and, most of all, to all those who spent their money with us! All funds raised go towards the future prosperity of the Society and help keep annual subscriptions down. On the day after the Gala, a coach full of us went off to RHS Harlow Carr for the day. A good time was had by all, and while I managed to resist the temptation of buying any more plants, there were those who did have a few select items by the time we returned to the coach. Before the Show on Saturday, 7th September, we have Jane Conquest visiting us on 29th August to speak to us about “Extending the Season”. It should be a good way of finding out how to keep our gardens looking good for as long as possible, so you are welcome to join us in the Methodist School Hall. It’s only £3 for visitors, £8 for the rest of the year, and our meetings start at 7.15pm, finishing about 9 o’clock. And you get tea/coffee and biscuits as well!

CLUMBER PARK’S FESTIVAL OF FOOD AND DRINK 2019 PREPARES A TASTY MENU FOR FOODIES This year’s Festival of Food and Drink, held for the seventh year at Clumber Park on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, is once again preparing a tasty menu of guest chefs, live demonstrations and fantastic food and drink to try and buy. MasterChef: The Professionals 2018 winner Laurence Henry makes his Cookery Theatre debut on Sunday but is no stranger to the area living in Nottingham and having worked for the Michelin starred Restaurant Sat Bains as Sous Chef.

popular Gin School returns with a new twist in the form of the iconic game of Bingo. ‘GINGO’ puts a new twist on Britain’s favourite tipple, as each session give participants the chance to learn more about the nation’s favourite spirit, while wielding their dabbers for a game of bingo. GINGO sessions will be held each day at 12noon, 1.30pm and 3pm, where attendees will receive five gin and tonic tastings, a goodie bag, game of bingo and top prizes for GINGO winners – including bottles of gin.

Vegan chef Brett Cobley, better known as the EpiVegan also appears at the Festival for the first time on Saturday. EpiVegan started life as an Instagram page back in 2016 and grew into a blog, a YouTube channel and then Brett’s first cook book What Vegans Eat.

Gin lovers can take advantage of an ‘early bird’ offer as a limited number of tickets are available until the end of July priced at £12 plus booking fee (£14 + booking free thereafter). Attendees must also purchase a festival ticket for entry into GINGO.

Laurence and Brett will be joined by Rachel Green, the award-winning chef, local food campaigner, food stylist, TV presenter and author who is making a welcome return to Clumber Park.

With 150 mouth-watering producers showcasing their food and drink, The Festival of Food and Drink is the biggest event of its kind in the region. Its festival vibe is enhanced by live music throughout the weekend, with the stage area surrounded by Street Food

Here at Blizard Physiotherapy and Sports Performance clinic our goal is to find the perfect footwear solution for your activity. For enjoyable, comfortable running, your running shoes should fit a little differently than your casual shoes, in a word: BIGGER. Often this means buying a different size than you’re used to in order to get the fit you need. Fitting you in the right shoe is what we do.

Here’s how your running shoes should fit: Wiggle Room - You should have about a thumb’s width of room between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe.

@ The Apothecary Urban Spa, Tickhill Tuesday and Thursday

Hold It - Look for a secure, comfortable fi t through the midfoot. Imagine a hand gently holding your foot in place. The Heel Deal - There should be no slipping at the heel. Not sure what size foot you have? We always measure both feet since they may not be the same size, buy shoes based on the bigger foot. Still have questions? Our Team are here for you! DEAR FRIENDS, It is with great sadness that we say goodbye this month to our minister Rev Dr Frank Okai Sam after 11 years amongst us. He leaves us

to begin a new life and ministry on the south coast of England with two churches that are part of the South Downs Methodist Circuit. We believe that they are very lucky to have Frank and will be greatly blessed by his presence amongst them. We shall miss him very much. Travel well Frank and may God continue to bless you and your family richly in the years ahead. Sadly, it was time for Frank to leave us. But why now? Why not last year? Stay with us a little longer Frank – why not next? In response to this question, Frank could not say, only that it was time. God had called and Frank (as always) had answered yes. In the bible there is a beautiful poem which you might have heard, it begins; There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: A time to be born and a time to die, A time to plant and a time to uproot, A time to kill and a time to heal, A time to tear down and a time to build, A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to mourn and a time to dance …..

TICKHILL ART GROUP T

We are now looking for new people who want to develop their skills and knowledge of all forms of art and craft work to welcome into our group. We meet every Thursday morning at the Scout Hut in St Mary’s Road, Tickhill at 10 am to share ideas, skills, tips and materials. Our work is enhanced from time to time by workshops provided by visiting professional artists. For more information or just to have an informal chat, please ring Pam on 01302 744508, or email pamtower@me.com.

The Book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, verses 1-8

You may know it better, paraphrased in The Seekers 1966 hit ‘Turn, turn, turn.’ Both these versions of the poem speak quite beautifully into situations of unexplainable loss. Drawing our attention away from our little selves, our little needs and our little lives into the context of eternity. For the time that we are speaking of here, is of course, not our time but God’s time. For us, there is never a time to lose someone we love, but we cannot say what God’s purposes might be. All we can know is that on the last day, which will surely come as God has promised, time will be no more and past, present and future will meet in the holy now of heaven and earth completed and one, and we will be re-united, wholly and perfectly with those we have loved and lost. So, God bless you Frank, God planted you for a while in our soil, we have laughed and cried together, mourned and danced, but God has uprooted you to re-plant you in another part of his kingdom. If we do not meet again on earth we will surely meet again in heaven, as ever we might hear you before we see you, but we know that heaven as earth will be a better place for your company. God bless you, each and every one.

Hello from Mayflower, What a difference a month or two makes, instead of keeping our dogs warm, we are now filling paddling pools to keep them cool. The kennel assistants also hose the kennel runs to keep the dogs nice and cool and chilled, so as you can imagine on top of all the other jobs it is hard work but very necessary. Last time I wrote about Lottie who had the ear operation and is totally deaf, she is now ready for re-homing she is a lovely small short haired Collie type, who is learning hand signals, but is still a little nervous and needs to gain more confidence. If you feel that you are able to help this lovely girl please give us a call. We also have older puppies that are very pretty, but please be aware that are criteria for re-homing puppies is quite strict. However please come along and chat to our kennel staff they will be happy to help you. We have some beautiful kittens here too, again come and speak to us about our adoption procedure for kittens. Some of us did a Doncaster Street collection in July. We had a really great day and thoroughly enjoyed the street artist that was singing on the same street. We happily joined in and also met some lovely people and listened to their stories. Doncaster people are always so generous so a big thank you to everyone that supported us. We had a fantastic Dog Show and raised lots of money at the Pavilion field in Tickhill. It was a beautiful day, thank you to everyone that came to show off their lovely dogs it was such a difficult decision for the judges as every dog has a special something. Thank you to people that baked cakes for the cake stall and kitchen, also to all volunteer that helped on the day, we had such a brilliant turn out. One last thanks to Shaun and Vin who did the BBQ it made a welcome lunch time treat. Please call us if you require any information about our Sanctuary. We have an abundance of beautiful dogs and cats so please if you are looking for a special pet please call for a chat and a look around. Our telephone number is 01302 711330. Have a lovely summer. Best Wishes

Bagpuss came into our care with her brother due to domestic issues in their previous home. Unfortunately, once here, she decided to bully her sibling and had to be separated. Maybe she prefers to be an only kitty – that way she gets ALL the attention. Bagpuss has lived with young children in her previous home but we have found her to be a little feisty and is therefore not recommended to be rehomed with youngsters. Bagpuss does not like dogs. In her previous home, Bagpuss was mainly a housecat but was allowed outside under strict supervision. She would possibly enjoy a secure garden to explore once she’s thoroughly settled into her new home. If you’re looking for a fussy kitty with a mind of her own and bags of character, then look no further. Here she is !!!!!!

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

TICKHILL ST MARYS

End of Year Concert at St Mary’s

Year 5 & 6 produced their version of the swashbuckling musical “Hoodwinked”. A tale of good and bad, cash flow from rich to poor and a story of love, all set in Sherwood Forest. The audience joined in to boo the Sheriff of Nottingham and to cheer Robin in his quest to help the poor. Year 6 worked hard to create

all the scenery and learn all their lines, there was even a guest appearance from Elvis – The King- unfortunately it was supposed to have been King Richard! The jester made us laugh with jokes such as: “Where did Robin Hood go to school?”…… ’arrow – get it?

Tickhill Estfeld School One Giant Leap – Tickhill Estfeld Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

As always the children in our Reception and their parents really did us proud on Gala Day. Their float was simply out if this world. The float told the story of the first moon landing and was a wonderful sight. Our whole school was very proud of how hard the children had worked over several months to produce such a stunning display. They thoroughly deserved their trophy for 2nd place. All 30 children were dressed as astronauts and scientists. The float was adorned with planets and stars and had a model of Apollo 11 on board too. The children really must have felt as if they were floating in Outer Space. They had great fun singing Rocket Man and chanting their countdown as they travelled through the village – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 blast off! We are sure that the crowds were impressed as the float toured the village. Well done indeed to all at Space Control – children and adults – we are proud of you all. I am sure that you will all remember it for many years to come.

We then have a stimulating talk from a visiting speaker after which there are opportunities to have a drink or perhaps some lunch together. Our programme for August is:12th August – Jean Townsend – Royalty Revealed – rumour, cover-ups and conspiracy theories. 26th August – Pat Osborne – The Life of Rasputin. Summer bargains T The local RSPCA Charity Shops are launching their super summer bargains with all four outlets taking advantage of a bumper season of quality donations. The shops at The Courtyard, Bawtry; High Street, Maltby; Field Road, Thorne; and Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington are offering an excellent second-hand range including ladieswear, menswear, children’s and bric-a-brac. Each shop continues to invite quality donations – it is a never ending cycle, or in this case re-cycle. Shop sales help the local RSPCA continue the vital work for animals suffering cruelty and neglect. There are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

Memory Trail T

Carlton in Lindrick: Memory Trail at local Church aimed for people living with dementia, their carers and family. This is the first of its kind in the East Midlands area, though other Trails have been formulated in a few places in the Country. The wording of each section of the Trail has been determined and endorsed by healthcare professionals in the field of mental health and Dementia, designed to encourage tactile and sensory activity. This is a new venture for our Arts Society Dukeries, extending the Societies’ Church Recordings and ‘Trails of Discovery’ aimed for children, adapting and extending these earlier Trails specifically for people with dementia. They are designed to provide enjoyable activity for people living with Dementia when visiting the Church, helping to jog memories, prompting conversation and discussion with carers and family. The Trail has been completed and printed copies have been left in Saint Johns Church Carlton in Lindrick for anyone to use. The Society intends to provide other Trails in other local Churches and buildings of historic interest, informing local Alzheimer’s patients groups as they become available. If you know of a local Church or local historic buildings that could be suitable for such a Memory Trail, please discuss this with us and telephone Gill on 01909 540506.

Doncaster Rambler’s A local Walk from Tickhill On Thursday 27th June, eleven walkers - Ramblers and guests - enjoyed a lovely 2-hour walk on the footpaths around Tickhill. The morning was dry and warm, a change from recent weather. We set off from the Buttercross and along Tithes Lane to Common Lane and over the motorway and north to Hopyard Lane. Here we were well into the area underwater from 500AD until medieval times, Tickhill Low Common. We then joined the Torne as we turned south, crossing Sheepwash Lane before posing on the bridge over the river and making our way back to Tickhill.

THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP

of the tickhill and colliery surgery T Hello, my name is Abigail and I am the female club vice-captain of Bircotes swimming club. As a proud member of the club, I would like to share with you a few of our achievements from this past month. As a club, we would like to start off by saying a huge thank you to Tickhill Lions for the kind donation of £300 to buy software, we are extremely grateful for your generosity. We also had our annual general meeting where it was voted the committee will remain the same for the next year. Another event that happened was the Bassetlaw championships. 50 of our swimmers took part and achieved lots of PBs and many medals were taken home. Two swimmers, Lexi and Blake also obtained county times and we are all very proud of them for this achievement. On a Thursday night in June, we had an open water swim at Hatfield Water Park. It was a lovely day which worked in our favour as some of the swimmers didn’t need to wear wetsuits. Some parents even joined in. Everyone had an enjoyable time and said they would love to do it again. Also, congratulations to Malachy and Cillian from a neighbouring club on reaching nationals, everyone is very proud of you both.

AIMING TO HELP YOU BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE When the practice is closed on Wednesday afternoon for staff training to take place, medical help is still available. Patients should ring the usual surgery telephone number. You will automatically be connected to the “out of hours service”. Some of the training sessions are held in the surgery, however, most take place off site. FUTURE WEDNESDAY TRAINING DATES ARE: 4th September 2019 25th September 2019 9th October 2019 6th November 2019 13th November 2019 29th January 2020 26th February 2020 4th March 2020 25th March 2020 The practice opens Monday to Friday from 8am till 6pm. On the above dates it will close at 12:15pm and reopen at 8:am the next day. The practice does not choose dates of the closures and they are a mandatory requirement in the National Health Service. The sessions include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Health and Safety training, to ensure the practice is able to offer the best possible service to patients and comply with NHS guidance.

. . . but not TODAY

Tickhill and District The Society tries to take a well-earned rest in July and August (at least we think it is well earned!) However, behind the scenes we are still booking Speakers, answering queries, helping trace ancestors, printing next year’s programme and making phone calls etc.

Local History Society container, despite weeks of Government red tape, was finally opened in mid-June. Janet has sent some lovely photos showing the unloading, and these will be available at our September meeting. Meanwhile, thank you to everyone who donated goods and helped with the appeal.

Our Autumn/Winter programme is now complete and membership fees are due. These can be renewed in the Library from 1st August, and the fee remains £6.00 per person, for the year. Please put this in an envelope, together with your name and address. This avoids the long queues at the autumn meetings.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our first meeting, Thursday 19th September, when one of our regular speakers, Jean Townend returns, to tell us about ‘The Real Queen Victoria.’

For everyone who donated to Janet Stain’s Gambia appeal, you will be pleased to know that the

How to avoid becoming a FOMO-sapien We have so many options today that it is becoming a daily struggle for most of us to avoid FOMO or FOBO syndromes (Fear Of Missing Out or a Better Option) that captures our culturally embedded belief that we should avoid missing out all costs. But is it really a modern phenomenon? In the Yogic traditions and in many other religious teachings we understand that the human mind has a tendency toward dissatisfaction with “what is so”…. There is always a brighter picture being painted in one’s mind of a better option than being right here, right now! Let’s say you have finally hit the moment of your dream holiday or special occasion, it might not be possible to be truly happy and present because something might still be a little bit wrong or it’s not matching your expectations in some way. In our Gentle Somatic Yoga Classes for Older Adults for the past few weeks we have been exploring this concept and watching our mind’s natural capacity to label and judge the present moment such that we resist what we perceive we dislike and try desperately to cling on to what we believe we love in the fear that if we let go it, nothing else can satisfy us in the same way. Instead in class and out of it, we are practicing choice-less awareness - a kind of open monitoring technique that trains the mind to be with what is so without trying to grasp on to it or fix it our change it in some way. This has had the expected result of helping us focus our attention, become productive and more pleasant to be around since we can now more easily identify the choices we have when we are emotionally triggered, right in that gap where our usual habits would normally take over and react in the moment for us! Since we are all over 40 years in Move and Inspire Me classes we are keen to slow the atrophy that happens in the brain after 21 years which has been proven to show up on the brain scans of experienced meditators. In class we have been discussing the fact that most adults spend around 47% of their day experiencing spontaneous mind wondering mental activity. We have become acutely aware that this takes us away from the present moment into the worrying and planning of future focused brain drain and anxiety or send us deep into the past rehearsing disappointments which serve to generate feelings of despair based on the regret of past experiences. Our resistance of the present moment can be overcome with the daily practice of meditation though with the happy result of dampening our limbic system response (in the

60

stress centre of the brain) such that we freak out less often and experience more calm in daily life. This in turn has supported us to be clear thinking in the face of life shocks and changes (instead of in a panic) and less anxious when faced with perceived dangers but more importantly to notice that dissatisfied mind at work, which is so encouraged by social media activities, advertising, TV and other idealised lifestyle worship. Instead we are practicing bringing the attention and awareness back to the present moment without trying to change it. This explains why you won’t find us on Social media anymore since we are practicing a new art of Digital Minimalism and learning to be content in the now by having the courage to miss out! We did also practice this on a very practical level recently when we turned down the opportunity to go through the third rounds of Britain’s Got Talent (having got through the first two) despite what this may have cost us in terms of building our brand. Of course we invite you to come and make your own positive brain changes with us and join in our Gentle Somatic Yoga Classes (Monday @ 5:15 at Wadworth Village Hall, Friday @ 5:45 at Oldcotes Village Hall). And why not add some positive physical change into the mix with or our fun filled evening Dance Fitness Classes aimed at 40+ (Tuesday 7:15 and Thursday 7:30 at Bawtry New Hall) or our long established and exciting Daytime DanceFit Light Classes aimed to keep you active, fit and supple in retirement (Tuesday 10 at the Guide and Scout Headquarters in Tickhill, and Friday @ 9.30am at Bawtry New Hall). Just call Deborah on 07539600640 to book your place. Deborah Molwuka is an experienced meditator of some 30 years and retired Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology. She is an Advanced Somatic Yoga Practitioner and Specialist in Older Active Adults with a Diploma in Doctors Referral.

Tickhill Gala 2019 Yet once again a wonderfully enjoyable day was had by all. The weather turned out well in the end. Special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this Gala Day so successful and was very well attended. Tickhill Town Council would like to remind you to keep hedges cut back. This is the growing season, some pedestrians not being able to access the free passage on pavements, causing them to have to walk on the road. If you see footpaths, kerbs or such like in need of repair please report these to D.M.B.C. on 736000. If you have any bookings for the pavilion/ tennis courts could you please contact the caretaker on 079551179433 and if you wish to alter arrangements please ensure you make further contact, as unfulfilled bookings will be charged for. The telephone number 07591175630 is now for account enquiries only and not for pavilion bookings or Town Council enquiries.

By the time you are reading this 7 members of our Explorer Scout Unit will have started their adventure at the World Jamboree in the United States proudly representing South Yorkshire Scouting. Tickhill residents have assisted in helping them attend by collecting large numbers of postage stamps which were recycled by the fundraising team. Also, thanks are due to Tickhill and District Lions who made a generous donation to each of the explorers to assist with the cost of this trip. We wait now to see how the youngsters have benefitted from this life changing, once in a lifetime experience. Despite a shaky start on July 6th, the weather got its act together and we enjoyed yet another fine Saturday afternoon for Tickhill Gala. Unaffected by the World Cup, cricket or tennis, people attended in their hundreds and had a superb afternoon of food and entertainment laid on by and totally financed by Tickhill Scout and Guide Association. The proceeds from this event will be spent entirely on the fabric of the Scout and Guide Headquarters. This building has been in constant, daily use for over 25 years and is now showing its age and is beginning to need some tender loving care.

64

The Cub Pack won the best dressed float and the Brownies won the best float costumes award. During the Summer period the Scout troop is attending a jamboree at Huntingdon Racecourse. An event where the Scouts will be faced with many activities way outside their comfort zone but in keeping with the Scout Motto of “Skills for Life”. We all return in September to face the challenge of how to continue delivering Scouting in Tickhill with an ever depleting adult leadership team but an ever increasing demand. Serious questions will be asked of us all and we will be looking to the people of Tickhill to support us with their time to ensure that we can continue. If you wish to help us address this situation then please get in touch with me, Bob Kitchen, via - tickhillscouts@aol. com; 01302 743430.

What is Remap? Remap is a national charity with about eighty local groups whose aim is to improve the lives of disabled people by designing, manufacturing and supplying unique equipment that will make them more comfortable or enable them to do things they would previously have found difficult or impossible. This usually has a beneficial effect for carers also. We do not offer any solutions that are not already available through National or commercial sources, although we have modified client’s own equipment to make them suitable for personal use. Annually, the number of projects that we have taken on vary from about 30 to 70. Funding No charge is made to the client for all this work. Local panels raise their own funding through donations and grants. Volunteers The Doncaster Panel always needs volunteers who like solving problems, then making their solution in a variety of materials in their own workshop. The

66

demise of local engineering companies has also resulted in fewer people with engineering skills who also have their own workshops hence the age profile of the volunteers tends to be on the high side!! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer also please contact us. Travel and material expenses are paid. Case Study We have so many varied and interesting projects on our files. This is just one recent one. A lady who was keen on hiking had a problem whereby she was able to walk on the flat and uphill but could not put stress on the muscles and ligaments that were used when walking downhill. Our team created a self- assembly bike that could be used to help her downhill. The bike was built in suitable parts for friends to carry and assemble and the lady could ride and control using the brakes descending. If you think we can help you – or you help us – please contact us: Brian Downes bdownes@btinternet.com or 07932231737 Chris Gibson 01302 770503
