Welcome to

the DECEMBER 2014 edition

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. Charles Dickens Christmas is nearly upon us again! I can’t believe that I am writing my December welcome already. At the time of writing there are still over 5 weeks until Christmas but, as I have barely started my preparations that doesn’t seem very long at all! Christmas week marks 10 years since I returned to Tickhill, having spent the previous 15 years living in a variety of different locations. It doesn’t seem possible that 10 years have passed so quickly, or that early in the New Year we will be marking the 10th anniversary of Today Publications. Over the last few months we have been running giveaways for tickets to see Peter Pan at Doncaster Racecourse. Sadly during November the decision was made to cancel the Pantomime which left us wondering what to offer our prize winners instead. The excellent news is that Doncaster Racecourse have agreed to offer family tickets to their Family Fun Day on 29th March instead. Thank you very much to Doncaster Racecourse, I am sure that our winners will enjoy this alternative day out. The January issues will be delivered to you late December; most people will receive them somewhere between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Tuesday 9th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas.

THE STORY SACK PROJECT Soroptimist members get involved in many activities, often organised by the Programme Action Officer, Ann Jones. The Story Sack pictured shows the kind of resources prepared by members to support particular reading books. The members read the book and make the key characters in the book out of fabric and other materials. The children love the Story Sacks, they read along and play with the characters bringing the book to life. This increases the pleasure that children get from the book and makes it more memorable to them. We hope it helps improve their reading, but we haven’t measured that! If you would like to join in with the whole range of activities that the Doncaster Soroptimists do, please contact Carol Burton, out Membership Officer on 01302 368822. T

Methodist Minister

29th November 10-12 Christmas Fayre at Wadworth Church 30th November 6:30pm Advent Praise at Wadworth Church 7th December 3pm Christingle at Wadworth Church 14th December 3pm DIY Nativity at Wadworth Church 16th December 7pm Balby Carr Christmas Service at Balby Church

Dear Friends,

Christmas is a time of presents. Presents are given to friends, relations and sometimes to long lost friends and acquaintances. Most children get their wishes met at Christmas because some people believe that Christmas is all about the children. However, whether presents or children, we are reminded that Christmas is about someone’s birthday. Christians believe that the greatest present God gave to humankind is his son, Jesus. He was born on Christmas day to Mary and Joseph, a humble couple. Jesus lived with his parents in obedience and learned his father’s trade – carpentry. The bible says that he grew in stature and wisdom. Jesus grew up to become very powerful but he did not use his power to exploit people as some do. He used his power to heal, free those in prison of sin, and to tell the good news of God’s salvation to people. That was not the end of his story. Jesus died for the sins of the world. Furthermore, Christians believe that this Jesus rose from the dead three days after he died and he is in heaven praying for each one of us. I wonder if you would agree with me that it is important to celebrate the birthday of such a person. Hence, churches throughout the Doncaster borough and its environs have planned activities and invite them to join in celebrating the joy that come with the Christmas season. The churches’ activities include worship services, carol singing, party times, prayer times, and times of reflections. I wonder if you can consider this important invitation and participate in at least a few of these activities so as to enjoy the fun and blessings that come with the birth of Jesus. Hoping to see you. May God grant you peace.

community Hello everyone. Where has this year disappeared to? We like to hope our joys have outweighed our heartache and we have all made a difference to the animals that have been and are still in our care. We have recently rescued a lovely Labrador X and after being with us a few days she produced 5 beautiful puppies. She is now safe and well in her warm bedroom with her babies tucked up with her. Another one of many sad stories is a 12 year old standard poodle with such a lovely nature. Her owners thought her a bit of a nuisance as she was old and handed her to us without a backward glance. We are hoping that some kind person comes along and maybe fosters her. But until then she is being taken care of by our wonderful staff and volunteers. There are lots of stories to be told but we must concentrate on the positives, that when dogs and cats come to us no matter what the circumstances they are warm and safe with us. We are one of the few rescue centres that still carry out home visits to make sure all of our dogs will be taken care of in loving homes where all the family want a dog, that fences are high enough also that the garden is secure so no one can escape. It also enables us to check out that you have chosen the correct dog that will fit into your lifestyle.

We have 2 beautiful young marmalade cats that are still waiting for there forever homes. These are the ones that survived being left in a sack at the side of the river. It would be so lovely to think they have knees to curl up on for Christmas. A little now about our recent Halloween party days. Everyone had a great time so thank you everyone that came along and had fun. We raised lots of money so thank you again. This was mentioned in the last months edition but I will just remind you again, in case you are amongst the first to receive a December magazine and see this in time. The accomplished artist Diane Hill is having an art exhibition at the Methodist church lounge in Tickhill on the 29th November, 10-3 there will be lots happening. Food, raffle, sherry and I will be there with my dog Blossom So I hope to see you there. On 6th of Dec and 21st December we will be outside M & S in Doncaster with our funny Christmas hats rattling tins hoping that the people of Doncaster come up trumps as usual and make these days so worthwhile. So we will look forward to seeing you then. Come and say hello we love to listen to your lovely animal stories. We are also outside Pets at home on 21st December so I do hope the weather will be kind to us all. On 7th December don’t forget Santa Dash which will be great

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Finding a forever home fun at Sandall Park in Doncaster . If you would like to take part and help to raise money for our Sanctuary please give Barbara a call on 07975540533. Don’t worry they will not ask you to race a marathon it’s only a mile and you can walk, run, jog just do your own thing. But what a terrific sight hundreds of Santas all in one place. Bring along your dogs dress them up and they may win a prize. You will keep them warm too. Please come to see us if you are looking for that special pet to share your life. Telephone 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 we will be happy to help. We would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity throughout the year. Also big thank you to all staff and volunteers, not forgetting the ladies who take care of our shop in Manton

Wishing everyone a happy Christmas and peaceful new year from DOO DW 0D\Ç RZHU Sanctuary.

Dumping of Garden Rubbish The stream (Paper Mill Dyke) which flows into the Mill Dam has its origin in Maltby/Stainton before entering Tickhill under Rotherham Road (A631), past the back of The Friary, under Worksop Road (A60) and then winds its way past a variety of properties, finally passing through Home Meadows before proceeding under Rowland’s Bridge and into the Mill Dam. The Friends of Tickhill Mill Dam (FOTMD) have noticed that, from time to time, a lot of garden rubbish appears in the stream before it passes through Home Meadows. This rubbish often includes tree branches which can be more than two inches diameter as well as brambles, shrubs and grass cuttings. This material often partially blocks not only the flow of water under Rowland’s Bridge but also the overflow weir on the Mill Dam and more importantly the automatic Sluice Gate on the Mill Dam. It is vital that we keep the water flowing freely into and out of the Mill Dam. The automatic opening of the Mill Dam Sluice Gate has saved properties from flooding on a number occasions since 2007. The FOTMD have worked and continue to work hard to ensure the flooding, which occurred in June 2007, is not repeated. To this end we ask all residents not to illegally dump garden rubbish into the stream. The Friends of Tickhill Mill Dam P.S. On a more positive note members of the Friends of Tickhill Mill Dam removed all the many, many leaves (and Dog Poo) from Bower's Walk on Friday 6th November. T 14

Vastly experienced and knowledgeable and having written a number of books, we were treated to a very enjoyable evening with many members asking speaker finder Eric Brough how soon we could have him back. The last meeting of 2014 is on Thursday 4th December in the Methodist Schoolroom starting at 7.15pm when Dr. Mike Davey of Ruddington, Nottingham will talk to us about ‘Allotment Gardening and Vegetables through the year’. There could be a lot of us taking notes! Visitors welcome (£3) and mince pies will be served with coffee. At this meeting names will be taken for the Pie and Pea supper at the AGM on Thursday 29th January. Anyone not attending this meeting but requiring pie and peas should contact Ray or Gillian Hill on 743317. The AGM is not all business it’s more of a social with a quiz or two. THESE FEET ARE MADE FOR WALKING Foot and ankle problems are highly prevalent with the sporting population perhaps being more vulnerable to such problems. In our clinic, foot problems are a factor in a great many of our runners but also in people who participate in any weight bearing exercise (including walking) and indeed those for whom standing is a large part of their occupation. The foundation for achieving good balance, stability and posture lies with the foot. Without these, we may be troubled by injuries such as low back pain, groin problems, knee pain or Achilles trouble or may experience poor performance.

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

Many people spend a considerable amount of time choosing the ‘perfect’ pair of trainers and yet perhaps need to consider the foot itself. The sole of the foot is extremely sensitive to allow a constant stream of information to be relayed back to the nervous system so your body can make automatic adjustments necessary to maintain your body’s alignment. A common problem is where the foot is held in a rigid position during activity which impairs the feedback through the sole of the foot and balance and stability are diminished. Testing your feet… Remove your shoes and socks and stand on one leg. Is your whole foot rocking from side to side? Are your toes scrunched up? Are the tendons on the top of your foot noticeably raised? If you answered yes to any of these questions you would likely benefit from addressing the function of the foot. Physiotherapy can assess this more closely and work towards restoring a flexible and effective foot.

Estfeld School– If you go down to the woods today…

you might just meet a Gruffalo! Our Reception Class took their first educational visit recently. The children visited Sherwood Pines Forest, where they learned all about the forest and its inhabitants.

course the primary function of Sherwood Pines Forest is to produce wood; it is a managed forest and the children also learned about the vast variety of uses that the wood produced has.

Autumn is a wonderful time to be in the forest as so much is changing and the colours seem to be at their best at this time of year - there are logs to sit on for story time and to balance on; treasures to collect as they fall to the forest floor; a glimpse of sunshine filtering through the trees to brighten up the day.

After lunch the children went on a “Gruffalo hunt”, which is a new trail installed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the publishing of this popular children’s book.

In the morning the children engaged in some woodland art. The group worked together to make a big picture of a tree, using materials foraged form the forest such as twigs, pine needles, pine cones, leaves, tree bark and pebbles. It was a great joint effort and the forest floor made a perfect canvas. The children also learned about the many inhabitants of the forest and why the forest is such an important place for wildlife. Of

A school trip for the younger pupils is never complete without a visit to the play park and this was the perfect end to the day. There were many tired arms and legs and heavy eyes on the return coach journey, with just enough time for a snooze. What an exciting and busy day! If you haven’t visited Sherwood Pines Forest we thoroughly recommend it.

Estfeld School– Remembrance and the First World War The centenary of the beginning of World War 1 is being marked in almost all schools across the country. It is a period of history that changed the lives of people and led to social and cultural change in most countries. At Estfeld each class has researched a different aspect of the period, from how animals helped the war effort to the dawn of the Royal Air Force. In school we marked Remembrance as we usually do with a special assembly on Tuesday 11th November. We observed the two minute silence, taking the time to stop, think and reflect on those who in the past and present past, and present have served and continue to serve their countries with pride. Our pupils have surprising insight given their ages and show great respect. On Remembrance Sunday pupils from Estfeld and St. Mary’s School again attended the Remembrance Service at St. Mary’s Church together and laid a wreath at the war memorial on behalf of the staff and pupils of both schools.

On Friday 14th November we were visited by children’s author John Malam. John is a non-fiction author has written two award winning books about the First World War. John dressed as a soldier of the time and worked with pupils to explain how the war affected people. With our older pupils he based his work on copies of original letters sent from soldiers at the front to their loved ones at home. It was a very interesting and thought-provoking day. As a school we feel that it is important for our pupils to know about values such as duty and responsibility and about compassion and forgiveness. We try to do so sensitively and in a way appropriate to the age of the children. We are also extremely grateful to those families who sent in letters and artefacts that they had preserved from both World Wars 1 and 2. Thank you for sharing with us part of your family history. Lest we forget.

community The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery (Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.)

The PPG held their AGM in October and for the first time were in the happy position of having more nominees for election to the committee than places available. Following a tie for the last committee place a coin toss took place and Mr J Bergin was elected. We welcome him along with the other patients who joined the wider group and will be contacted by email with news and questionnaires or called upon to help (where they have volunteered) with events as they are organised. Another place that questionnaires re Medical experiences and preferences are posted is Doncaster Care Commissioning Group (CCG) Everyone in Doncaster is encouraged to give their views. You can do this by going to their website at www.doncasterccg.nhs.uk where on the first page is a box linking you to the latest surveys which you can complete. The latest one is on your views re Doncaster spending money to support care at home or residential care. The National Association of Patients Groups tells us “The number of patients needing to see their GP is increasing, yet funding for general practice is falling year on year.

Our PPG committee would like to involve more of the 9200 patients registered with the practice. We are keen to hear from everyone especially those who are at work, have a specific ongoing illness or are under 20years of age such that we can gain a more representative view of patients’ priorities. With this in mind we are developing a wider online group. The members of this will be able to complete online questionnaires and receive minutes of meetings, information and news as it becomes available. If you are happy for us to contact you periodically by email please send us an email to tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com . Alternatively pick up a contact us form from reception complete it and hand it to a Patients’ Group representative or put it in the comments box.

This means millions of patients are waiting a week or more to see their GP and the amount spent per patient is in decline. Many GPs now fear that patient care will be put at risk and 71% are predicting that waiting times will get even worse.

The information you supply us will be used lawfully, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to know what information is held about you, and sets out rules to make sure that this information is handled properly.

The result was a 300 000 signature petition delivered to Number 10 by Dr Patricia Wilkie NAPP PRESIDENT and Dr M Maureen Baker, RCGP Chair of Council

Finally but very importantly, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and send our best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year.

The campaign team are confident that this will lead to an adjournment debate in parliament in the near future. We will keep you updated. 32

Dementia Peer Support Groups Talking about your worries and problems can be a very good way of releasing some of the stress that can build up when you’re a carer. Your family, friends and the medical and social work team can all listen to your concerns. But sometimes it’s best to talk to someone who knows exactly what you’re going through, because it’s happening to them too. Other carers can offer kindness, sympathy, understanding and advice, and they can make you feel less isolated.

Counselling for people with dementia and their carers Relate is offering free relationship counselling in Doncaster to help people who are living with dementia, and their cares (i.e. spouse, children or neighbour). Living with dementia can have a real impact on your relationships, our fully trained counsellors can help you and your loved ones to cope with the emotional impact. You can access free, private and confidential counselling support either face-to-face, over the telephone, or online through a live web chat. If you would like to find out more, for yourself, or on behalf of someone you care for, please call us now on 01302 380280 or visit www.relate.org.uk/dif to start a live web chat.

Tickhill Bowling Club Coming Soon... 32nd Doncaster Doncaster and District Bowling Association has now published the results of this year’s (Tickhill) Guides competitions and I am very pleased to report that; TBC’s Midweek League team, captained by Peter Hutchinson came top of their table by beating Hexthorpe Flatts A team into second place by four points Our Over 60’s team captained by Brian Hardy came second in their league but this was a much closer result. Thorne Colliery came out top with a clear 14 point total score and Tickhill just beat Rossington Welfare B into third place because, although both teams finished with the same number of points, Tickhill had a better average. Both these teams will be promoted to a higher league next year. Our Over 60 Doubles team Captained by Lynda Bradbury just missed out on promotion by taking a very reputable third place in their league Our Doubles League team under the Captaincy of Tom Plenderleith has not done quite as well and has finished in 7th position. So it is congratulations and well done to all the members who have taken part in this very successful year

After a few years of not having a Guide group at Tickhill, Katy Carr and Hannah Scott have joined forces to re-establish 32nd Doncaster Guides. Both Katy Carr and Hannah (Snowy Owl) have a great wealth of experience through the Girlguiding UK movement, and currently assist Clare Carr with the Brownies, We both feel that the girls need a new stepping stone after they leave Brownies. Starting with a small group of 8 girls we will build on this over the next year with lots of exciting plans for trips, meetings, badges, and weekends away. Guides are aged from 10 - 14 so if your daughter wants to come and join us please contact us at Hannah@scottandbell.co.uk or give Hannah a call on 07912442783. Our new meetings will start in January (currently every other Wednesday, may change to every Wednesday) 19:30 - 21:00 at Tickhill Scout and Guide Hut next to St Marys School. Wish us both luck!!! Thanks for your continued support! T

The DDBA presentation night will be held on Friday 14th November and their next general meeting is scheduled for Monday 12th January. It goes without saying that the TBC was and will be represented at each of these events The Tickhill Bowling Club’s own AGM will be held in the Tickhill Institute on Monday 24th November at 2.00 p.m. Please make a note in your diary and come along to this important event. More information about the Club can be obtained via the Tickhill News page of the Town Council’s web site www.tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk Brian Keith Secretary, Tickhill Bowling Club Telephone: 07891 907733 T 36

With Lute, Viol And Voices. Actors are fond of saying that you should never go on stage with animals or children – they are too unpredictable. This clearly held no fear for the musicians appearing at Tickhill Music Society, who were joined by the choir of St Mary’s School in a concert of early music. The principal artists called themselves Pellingmans’ Saraband, the name being a neat amalgam of the artists’ names - Susanna Pell (viol) and Jacob Heringman (lutes). A saraband is a dance form coming to the rest of Europe from Spain.

The music was mainly from the 1600s or thereabouts, this being the golden age of lute and viol playing. The programme was entitled “Twenty waies upon the bels”, which was a reference to an individual piece and also illustrated the way in which composers of the period used the sound of bells as a theme.

A third performer was the soprano Faye Newton who specialises in early music for which her clear, well enunciated voice was both pleasing and well projected.

Altogether a most pleasing concert, and the audience was fortunate to hear two of the leading exponents of their particular instruments.

The school choir (all girls) sang a number of rounds, Jacob Heringman played two lutes of different sizes, and the viol used was a bass viol (sometimes called a viola da gamba for being held between the legs).

The music may not have been familiar, but had instant appeal and was easy to follow, thanks to the repeated musical patterns. The programme included a sprightly round called ‘Three Blind Mice’, and ‘Greensleeves’, listed in the programme as being by the prolific ‘Anon’ although it has been attributed to King Henry VIII.

Seeing your children over Christmas T

he Christmas period can be a very difficult time for a child whose parents have separated. It is vital that parents remember that the most important person, especially at this time of year, is the child. Most children of separated parents, if asked what they would like to happen over the Christmas period, would say that in an ideal world they would like to mum and dad to be together and the whole family to be happy. Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world. This means that Christmas can be a very tough time for a child, which can be made much worse if parents cannot reach an amicable agreement after the arrangements to be made over the Christmas period. It is understandable that each parent wants to be able to create the perfect Christmas for their child. However as a parent you need to try to put yourself in your child’s shoes and imagine how they are feeling. Any conflict between parents will have a negative impact on the Christmas festivities, and memories of this can remain with a child for a very long time. It is important to try and agree arrangements for the Christmas period well in advance. If it is left until Christmas Eve, this will only cause problems for everyone. Plans will have already been made. Even if there are regular arrangements for contact in place, it is always worth checking with the other parent to make sure that there are no misunderstandings.

It can be especially important at this time of year to remember that a child loves both parents, and does not want to hear or see any fighting or arguments. It may be helpful to consider the following when making arrangements for Christmas: 1

2 3

4

5 6

Your child is the most important person whose needs should be considered when making arrangements for Christmas contact. Ask the other parent to work with you on this issue. Remind your child, and yourself, that Christmas is one day, and that there will be plenty of other special occasions over the next 364 days. Do not speak negatively to your child about the other parent or criticise the other parent’s plans. Do not upset your child by having an argument or heated discussion at contact handover. Protect your child from any disagreement between you and your former partner, and make every effort to ensure that the child does not pick up on any hostilities.

It is always a fine balancing act to get the contact arrangements right, but it is worth it to ensure a happy Christmas period for your child.

If you do need legal advice on this or any other family law issue then please contact Rhona Jenkins on 01777 703827 or for an appointment.

Garden View

Christmas past made present Long before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. 52

At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible decorations would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter.

a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! Merry Christmas.

Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee. .

Tickhill Brownies – What an eventful year! We are now drawing to the close of the Big Brownie Birthday celebrations, and what a time we have had. We have been to Disneyland Paris, Starquest at Wetherby Racecourse, gone camping and had a sleepover in the Scout Hut and obtained our Circus Performer Badge, to name but a few. This term we have been concentrating on the Poppy Challenge, and raising funds for the Royal British Legion, you may have seen our poppies in the Church at the Remembrance Day service. And even more exciting news is that Hannah

and Katy are starting up the Guide unit in Tickhill again, after its absence of a few years. So now the girls will have a choice of Guides, or Scouts to go to when they reach the end of their Brownie life. Our next project will be the Christmas Tree festival at the beginning of December. Our Monday pack is full, but we have spaces in the Tuesday pack from January, so if your daughter is interested please contact me. Clare Carr, Brown Owl • 07780703012 T

Tickhill Parish Room Here we are again with the December issue of Tickhill Today and the Parish Room news! How can it possibly be the last one of 2014?! We had a very busy November and with the start of two new classes December is even busier! The diversity of occasions we 'host' in our lovely building is amazing! One of our newest classes is a Ukulele Class (Mondays from 7pm. - 8pm) I don't think there has ever actually been a ukulele in the Parish Room, never mind being taught there! (I expect someone will be contradicting me on this!) The class started on the 10th November anyone is welcome whether you can already play or want to learn. You don't need your own ukulele - you can borrow one! Our other new class - Yoga - By Move and Inspire Me, with Deborah Molwuka also on Mondays at 5.15pm started on the 17th November. So - two new classes with miles apart interests! I wonder

how a joint class would work? Actually I think if anyone could make it work, Deborah could! Also in December we have the Tuesday evening Yoga class from 7.15pm - 8.45pm WI Meeting, Wednesday 3rd December at 2pm Francophiles meeting, also the 3rd at 7.30pm Slimming World meet every Thursday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Futterweenies, with Rachel, term time Fridays 9.30am - 10.30am, and our regular Saturday Coffee Mornings from 10am - 12noon. The Parish Room will be open on Christmas Eve for hot drinks and mince pies during the Carol Concert, from 5.30pm - 8pm. Notes for your 2015 diaries - we will be holding another Parish Room Quiz Night on the 16th January, with Pie and Peas. To book your place and your Pie and Peas, contact Lesley on 01302 744600. Tickets are £5. It’s a good night’s entertainment with Tim Sweed as Quizmaster, so don't leave it too late to book your place (and your pie)!! Watch out for information in January about a Burns Night celebration in the Parish Room in January! On behalf of the Tickhill Parish Room Management Committee can I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and hope your New Year is a Peaceful one. If you want to book Tickhill Parish Room for any occasion at all, please ring me on 07840 419763, when I will be happy to help. Janice Birkinshaw T

At our meeting on November 13th, sixty six members heard a very interesting talk about the history of wedding dresses from Janet Stain...which brought back many memories! A basket passed round during the meeting raised £70 for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Our next meeting will be a Social Evening on December 11th during which we are holding a Christmas Auction for our Charity. Best wishes to you all for a Happy Christmas. Marcia J Lingard. 8 prizes of Tickhill’s new book “TICKHILL discover its past” Entry forms available, price 50p at KSM Card Gallery, Castlegate. Completed entries must be returned to KSM by Saturday 3rd January 2015

Have fun and maybe win a Sponsored by valuable prize over Christmas. Our October Meeting. After a brief AGM and with the aid of only one drawing on a flip chart, Lloyd Powell, our October speaker, held 87 people utterly enthralled as he told the history of Tickhill Castle from 1104 AD, when it started life as a wooden structure. He told of its expansion into a well fortified stone building, which at one time had a gibbet outside, and saw regular hangings! We also learned of its deterioration and the reasons why – All in all, it was a brilliant and very entertaining evening. Thank you Lloyd. An additional website. Steve Payne is developing an additional website for the Society which is linked to our new book “TICKHILL – discover its past”. It contains material for which there was not room in the book (already 330+ pages!) but which was too interesting and valuable not to share. It is hoped too that people, stimulated 66

by the book, will contribute new information (comments, notes, photographs, documents anything) so that the site can continue to grow and add to the understanding of Tickhill and its past. Please visit www.tickhilldiscoveritspast.org.uk Our website tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk will continue as our main website covering all the activities of the Society. Our December Social. This all ticket event for members and their partners only will take place at the Millstone on 11th December starting at 7.30pm. There will be a peas, pies and puds supper followed by a seasonal talk, “Christmas in the Dales” by Andrew Firth. If you have not got your ticket by the time you read this there may just be a few left if you act quickly. Ring Dorothy Bradley on 752429. And finally, we wish you all a very happy Christmas and successful New Year.

Tickhill Ukulele Group 10 or 15 years ago, the ukulele was only ever really seen to be used by either George Formby enthusiasts playing, more often than not as a guilty pleasure, to audiences who would smile awkwardly and roll their eyes at the quality of the jokes, or bought as a children's toy by parents who really meant to buy their offspring a guitar. Fashions change, and the instrument has seen a major resurgence in recent years, with artists such as Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and Train using it to write serious heartfelt songs and achieving equally serious sales success worldwide. Many primary school teachers are seeing the ukulele as an ideal starter instrument for children. Its diminutive scale makes it perfect for little hands. Having only four strings makes learning chords much less complicated. The strings themselves are made of nylon and are very easy to press down. This means that new starters don't experience the same soreness of the fingers that is associated with learning to play guitar.

such group on Monday evenings in the Tickhill Parish Rooms. Brett, an experienced musician, son Harry (7) who is himself a budding musician and Sarah, a total novice who somewhat grudgingly allowed herself to be talked into taking part and found she quite liked it, invite people of all ages and abilities to come and have a go. "Whether old or young, an experienced player or total novice without an instrument, who would like to try one of ours first before they go out and buy one, whatever style of music you like, we hope that we can find something for you." "...we even welcome people who just want to come and sing along, the kettle will be on and the more the merrier." Brett is also happy to provide advice on buying a new ukulele or help with practical matters such as tuning and replacing strings.

The group runs Mondays 7-8 pm at the Tickhill Parish Room. Adults ÂŁ3, Children 16 and under ÂŁ2. All children must be accompanied by an adult. T

This renaissance has helped to spawn many local groups up and down the country where people can play and sing happy songs in an unselfconscious manner with other like-minded people. The emphasis is on the taking part and not necessarily on being a great musician. The trick is, the more people there are the better it sounds. Balby-based musician Brett Smith and family have decided to try and set up one 68

Tickhill Town Council - DECEMBER 2014

As you read this article you are probably well on your way with Christmas preparations. We will have had the late night opening with the lights switch on, making the town as festive as ever. Each year we ask ourselves where the time has gone, Christmas and many other activities just keep coming along year on year We are a very lucky community with so much happening in our town throughout the year; our many thanks go to the groups and societies that make this possible with their planning and organisation for such events. The Council were very disappointed when we literally had to pull the plug on our Big Lunch because of heavy rain, we worked very hard early morning kidding ourselves all the time it would get better but for safety reasons and common sense it eventually beat us. Our Punch and Judy attraction did perform for a couple of hours in the pavilion entertaining the children over lunch so all was not lost. Preparations are in hand to stage the event in 2015 on Sunday May 31st. A meeting is planned for January 13th at 7pm in the pavilion and anyone who would like to be part of the organising team please come along and join us. During the year we have continued with our improvement plan in the pavilion, new flooring, doors and decoration thus making it a very pleasant place to use. Over the years we have been able to offer the facilities by way of a grant to organisers of events and this year we were pleased to include the Cycle Grand Prix on to the list. For information on the pavilion contact Jamie on 07591179658. Our Tickhill in Bloom group has again been working tirelessly and faithfully to keep the town looking attractive with its floral displays, for their efforts this year they have been awarded a gold award by the Doncaster in Bloom organisation. We do congratulate them and whole heartedly thank them for their work. We have had some problems on the stoned area soakaways on the car park where illegal parking has taken place for some 70

TICKHILL TODAY

time. When you get this publication hopefully we shall have new planters in place and under the umbrella of Tickhill in Bloom the Scouts are going to look after them. We hope this will be an attractive addition to the car park and make full use of the soakaways. As we come to the end of the calendar year we are only three quarters through the council year as our year ends in March. We can safely say we are on programme and our finances are on budget. This is due to the conscientious work of our clerk/financial officer and for that we do thank her. The first meeting in the New Year is the budget meeting when we plan for next year from April 2015 there will be a local election in May as all councillors will have served their current 4 years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the councillors for their unpaid voluntary work to our town and especially Councillor Cannings for his role as voluntary litter picker along with the many other tasks he undertakes, and our staff at the pavilion Jamie and Andrea who look after the complex in a very professional manner. Also thanks to yourselves the residents who support us endlessly through the years. The council look forward to 2015 when once again we shall do our best to serve you. I and the council wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Town Mayor Ray Hill

Trickhill or Treat Halloween Pumpkin Competition 2014 We couldn’t have asked for better weather to do the first annual Trickhill or Treat Halloween Pumpkin Competition, it was 23 degrees and sunny which I think warrants Indian summer classification and it was notably the warmest Halloween on record. What a heart warming experience to be sat watching families with their pumpkins of all shapes and sizes being walked down to the Buttercross, at one point they were coming from all directions. The event itself was a great success with over 60 pumpkins finally being displayed on the steps and when dusk fell they looked very effective. Thank you to everybody who entered and then collected their pumpkins, without people doing that then I think the village would have been a mess, a few lone pumpkins can just be too tempting for some. All the entries were absolutely fantastic and it was so hard to choose winners for the categories.

Winners Age 2: Grace Hall Age 5: Maycie Leah Bellingham Age 7: Sam Radford Age 11: Hannah Mickley

Special thanks to Lindsey Jones and Lush Cosmetics, Meadowhall, who made all the wonderful prizes possible. They were much appreciated. Trickhill or Treat raised £75.60 for Tickhill Together and TICKHILL TODAY

Thank you also to those who took part in the events run by some of the shops I understand that these too were a great success. I know we certainly had fun doing a Halloween gingerbread house at Poppets and my daughter loved the make a monster workshop at From Rags to Stitches.

hopefully we can grow this in the future for even more families to benefit from the ‘spirit’ of the day and raise the profile of the village for the right reasons. If anyone has any ideas in readiness for next year then either Claire or myself would love to hear them.

Massive well done to you all! Thank you all for taking part and helping us raise money for NSPCC. The PO team in Spar T
